global scale. Soon it became known as the Spanish flu, because it received the most

The pizza ovens and fryers make it extremely hot at Sam s Pizza. All three pizza
ovens are set to 550 degrees and, and all three fryers are set to 400 degrees. In the
summer the temperature can reach over 100 degrees in the pizza shop. Working an 8
hour shift in these temperatures can be a grueling experience. The heatin the shop
matched with the buffet and non stop pizzaorder phone calls make it even worse. I
remember the first time working a long shift when I started working at Sam s. It
was harder than I would have ever imagined. The heat really affected my ability to
work efficiently. After a few hours I could tell I wasn t working as hard as I was at
the beginning of my shift. Working tired and hungry in that heat really drained a lot
of my energy. It made it hard to communicate effectively and be nice while talking to
costumers.
I m not the only one who has had bad long shift experiences. A new 16 year old
employee who started working at Sam s pizza in August didn t have the best
experience on his first day at the job. The employee worked a six hour shift and
about five hours in he passed out while he was rolling pizza dough. He was
completely fine after about five minutes. We gave him water, and he was back to
work right away. He told us the reason he passed out was because he had an anxiety
attack. It was extremely hot that day, and I think the heat played a big role in making
him pass out.

Heaney s poems both relate back to his younger, adolescent life. In the poem Early
purges , he describes young kittens being drowned on the farm. His maturity is
shown when he says with perception, And now, when shrill pups are prodded to
drown, I just shrug, Bloody pups . But we are shown that he is still careless now,
as well in a casual way by saying I just shrug . He is also unsympathetic, and
justifies his actions like Dan. He is now older, looking back and changed. The
language used by Heaney also expresses the fact that little was thought of these so

But the fear came back . In this particular occasion, the full stop emphasises a space
of time where Dan had no regret of what he had done with no disgust, but suddenly
the opposite is true over a moment in time. A couple of vicious verbs used in this
same stanza, are sickening tug , which shows that Dan was sickened by things that he
had done with his violent actions.
I think that the up until the final two verses, Heaney s outlook is that of a young boy,
who doesn t understand why something so cruel should happen. Heaney then shows
his maturity again by showing his understanding that the kittens, or pests , did
actually have to be removed. In the final stanza, a feeling of regret still takes place
where he is trying to convince himself that he did the right thing and that the kittens
are better off dead than alive.
Overall in this poem, it is made up of 3 simple line stanzas, where the first and third
lines rhyme.
In the poem Follower ,the voice is of the son. He is speaking about his father who
he looks up to and admires. The poem starts with the lines My father worked with a
horse plough, his shoulders globed like a full sail strung . The image given to us
immediately is of a large piece of machinery controlled by a large a powerful man.
We are told his shoulders are like a full sail strung , so straight away I think of a large
yacht sailing at great speed and nothing can stop it. I

Short Story Marigolds
Eugenia Collier uses diction and imagery to create the voice of her narrator,
Lizabeth, in her short story Marigolds. Lizabeth has a negative tone in the
beginning of the story. The imagery she stated, When I think of my hometown, all
that I seem to remember is dust the brown crumbly dust of late summer arid, sterile
dust that gets into the eyes and makes them water (Collier)... proves that she is
unhappy to be in that place. There are a lot of reasons why she is unhappy in that
place and one of them is poverty. Lizabeth hinted that one of their struggles was
poverty when she said Poverty is a cage in which we all are trapped, and our hatred

is stating that Miss Lottie s marigolds were the only beautiful thing in that
unsightly place. Those marigolds did not give her a pleasant feeling because she
thought that they were too beautiful to exist in that kind of place. Miss Lottie was
believed to be a witch when Lizabeth was young but she knows she is mature
enough not believe in those things anymore. Their first encounter resulted in
Lizabeth and her company destroying some of Miss Lottie s marigolds and they left
Miss Lottie and John Burke, her son, enraged. When she got home and went to her
room hoping to rest after a long day, she overheard her parents talking. She heard her
dad say, Twenty two years, Maybelle, twenty two years...and I got nothing for you,
nothing, nothing (Collier). She then realized that her father got fired from his job and
was not taking it too well after what they have been through. Maybelle, Lizabeth s
mother, attempted to comfort her husband by saying, Honey, you took good care of
us when you had it. Ain t nobody got nothing nowadays (Collier). After a while of
discussion Lizabeth s father began to sob, loudly and painfully. At this point,
LIzabeth is confused because she never heard a man cry before. She did not even
know that men cry.

In Chaucer s, The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer uses many aspects of one tale and
incorporates it into another using many reoccurring themes. Many characters go
through similar circumstances as Chaucer uses these themes to help each tale
parallel another. For example, the Wife of Bath s Tale and The Nun s Priests Tale,
uses the theme of textual evidence as a basis of reasoning of men to overpower

The theme of immoral characters becomes quite disturbing when people who
claimed to be devoted to the Lord are partaking in such dishonorable acts.
Dishonorable acts such as their treatment of women show how they neglect their
priesthood and are not truly men of God. The priests within the Miller and
Summoner s Tales disregard their vows of chastity and pursue women in order to
fulfill their desires of sex. Absolon, the incense swinger at the church vows for the
love a young married women, Alison. Absolon is fully aware of Alison s marriage,

Abnormality and Seymour Glass Abnormal behavior and those who exhibit it, often
point the way to what is wrong with being normal. Such is true in J.D. Salinger s
short story, A Perfect Day for Bananafish, in which character Seymour Glass displays
abnormal behaviors, attitudes, and qualities until the moment he dies. The
abnormalities that Seymour encompasses serve to underscore the failings of our so
called normal society.
Upon returning to New York from psychiatric wards of Army hospitals, Seymour
spends the next days with his wife s family, where it becomes apparent that his
psychiatric treatment was unsuccessful. His rudeness to Muriel s grandmother, calling
Seymour puts his hands on Sybil s ankles for the second time and compliments her
again by saying she is looking fine. They discuss another little girl named Sharon
Lipshutz who is also staying at the hotel. We learn that Sybil is jealous of her rival
and remarks that he could have pushed her off. Seymour tells her I pretended that
she was you. She tells him that next time he should push her off. After this
somewhat disturbing conversation between the adult Seymour and young Sybil,
they decide to go into the water. Seymour takes his robe off and leads Sybil into
the ocean waves where he tells her the story about imaginary bananafish. He tells
her that they lead a very tragic life. And that they swim into a hole where there s a

Silence of the Lambs: Eating Other Movies with Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti
Silence of the Lambs is viewed as one of the greatest horror thriller films, as it has
won Academy Awards in all the top five categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best
Actress, Best Director, and Adapted Screenplay. Some of the people in our ART
105 class might not even want to see this movie due to its realism of such a dark
and painful story, as well as some of the graphic material shown. This movie,
however, is one of the best horror films of the century, in my humble opinion. I
enjoy this movie thoroughly and often watch it in my spare time, so I have plenty of
opinions on every aspect of this movie.
During this entire movie, all the main characters, to me, were all very interesting, as

convicted Edmond Dantes and how he takes revenge on those who convicted him

Despite being poorly reviewed by scholars, this novel is still popular with the general
public and is considered to be Dumas masterpiece. After reading this novel, it is
obvious that it does deserve the title of masterpiece . Dumas work is absolutely

Saintsbury states that there is no attempt at an impression of growing horror
culminating in the horrible death of Madame de Villefort and her child. The
interest is frittered away in endless details and episodes (Saintsbury 1). I agree that
Dumas was far too generous in his descriptions and often times these descriptions
eliminated all sort of mystery or suspense in certain events. In fact, many of the
events that were supposed to be suspenseful were drowned out by massive amounts
of words to describe one scene. The depiction of Villefort s apartment was written
as, in order to call Edouard, he had to awaken the echoes of that apartment
transformed into a coffin; to speak was to violate the silence of the tomb (Dumas
483). the description of the apartment does provide a sense of creepiness, but the
sheer circumlocution takes away from the overall feeling of terror and suspense.
However, even without suspense, the novel still maintained my interest as vivid
images of the scenes were still available rather than being replaced with something
vague. Saintsbury suggests that the dangerous method of introducing long recitals by
various characters in order to help on the movement and join the intrigue is

Angie Thomas novel The Hate U Give is the story of a teenage girl facing racism
in the world around her. Starr Carter lives in Garden Heights, a neighborhood filled
with gangs, when one of her best friends Khalil is shot by the police, she is quick to
know he had been killed because of the racism that exists in our world. Throughout
the novel, Starr is constantly trying to show the world why Khalil died in order to

message was Joseph. In the film sound effects, body language and isolation were
used to help develop the message of how Joseph was affected by his past and
present. These choices by Green help us to understand that Joseph was a shy less
involved person in the present, but more comfortable and outgoing person in the past.
