The Concept of Power Essay
The concept of power is present within various realms of all organizations. Power, however, is not
something that should necessarily be looked at negatively. There are justifiable types of power that
may be important to criminal justice organizations. The main role of power in criminal justice
administration should be to gain compliance from subordinates of all types, and turn that power over
time into acceptable forms of authority (Stojkovic et al., 2008). It is for this reason that power is an
important attribute in criminal justice agencies. It is important as a criminal justice manager, and
agency as a whole, to have legitimate power. Power that is not coercive and works for the good of
the organization is beneficial in gathering...show more content...
Essay 2: Max Weber's study of authority gave birth to his division and classification of three types of
authority. These classifications of authority are often used in various roles in criminal justice
administrations. While Weber believed that power and authority are decidedly different concepts, the
two can be used in conjunction, and often are used for categorization within criminal justice
agencies. Traditional, charismatic, and legal authorities are all well–defined in the use of authority
by criminal justice administrations. Traditional authority is leadership that is based on the historical
customs of a society or group. Within an organization, traditional authority is based on the
precedented methods of operation that have changed little over time (Stojkovic et al., 2008). In
relation to the criminal justice administration, one may view traditional authority in the form of
commanding power of a warden within a corrections system. The warden is the head of the
hierarchy and operates simply in the way that a warden always has operated. In respect to traditional
authority, things do not change because procedures are based on customs and merely continue as
they always have. Weber's second type of influence is charismatic authority. Charismatic authority is
characterized by a leader with rare personal features that attract others to them. Charismatic leaders
have qualities that are powerful and challenging

Energy and Power Essay
Energy and Power
Although I am surrounded by energy and power, I never really knew just how much they mean to
the world. However, after learning about the fundamentals of energy, I have a much deeper
understanding of their magnitude. In this paper, I will reflect back on what I have learned about
energy, and how it has affected me personally. For instance, I know now that the power I am using
to sit here and type is roughly equivalent to the power used by an incandescent light bulb, but that is
only the beginning.
Energy is all around us, but to create power, we need to harness it. I never thought about the fact that
everything on earth has some type of energy, and until this course I never even knew the six different
types....show more content...
I never anticipated that the things I learned in just the first few weeks of this course would lead me
to change my own daily activities. Reading about the amounts of energy consumed in past years, and
projections for the future, made me realize we need to start conserving now ("Environmental..."
2001). When I learned how much energy the United States consumed in a single year in BTU's, I
began conserving my energy much more than I used to. I never knew that our country consumed
more energy than is given off in the explosion of a hydrogen bomb ("Annual..."2004). Therefore, I
am much more careful about turning off my lights, conserving my heat, and taking shorter showers.
I would much rather know that I am doing my part to conserve the precious energy that we have,
than know that I am lavishly wasting it. Until this course, I never would have understood the
importance of energy conservation, but being able to convert the amount of energy that I use into
different medias, such as horsepower, watts and Calories, has shown me just how much of a
difference a single person can make (Texas, February 2005).
As a single student in EGEE 101, the knowledge I have gained so far has only affected me, and
maybe a few of my closest friends. As a class, I believe we can make a large difference, and as a
campus, an even larger one. Learning new things about energy everyday

Essay on Power and Politics
Introduction Have you ever wondered what role politics and power play in organizations? When
used effectively they can be compatible in reaching the organizations goals. Power is defined as the
ability to get someone to do something you want done or the ability to make things happen in the
way you want them. (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, Chap. 15). Power is important within
organizations because it is the way in which management influences individuals to make things
happen. When power and influence combine, most of the time "politics" become involved in some
manner which may pose some problems. Organizational politics is best described as management
influenced by self–interest through the use of means not necessarily...show more content...
Information can be controlled to a "need to know" basis and/or just limited to the upper
management. This type of power compliments the legitimate power. Finally, there is Representative
power in which an organization uses an individual to be there spokesperson both within the
organization and when dealing with people outside of the organization. The second source of power
that influences individuals and organizations behaviors is known as Personal Power. This power
focuses more on the individual's independent nature within the position that he or she has been
placed. There are three sources under this power that are apparent in most organizations that are well
managed. The first is expert power in which control is based on the knowledge or experience that the
individual possesses in the position that he or she holds. Rational persuasion is the power to control
behavior by being able to show the desirable out comes through reasonable and acceptable means
within an organization. With the diverse personalities within an organization it is essential to have
management that is levelheaded and rational. The final basis of control within personal power is
referent power. It is controlling an individual's behavior within an organization by allowing them to
identify with the source of power that is over them.

Balance of Power Essay
In the modern International System where does the balance of power stand? In the past, it had
shifted from empire to empire, sometimes many empires held power at once. To explain the
polarity of the world today we must first examine the definition of power in order to know what it
means to have power and how it spreads. Then we must look at the polarity of the past to
determine how the powers of today got to where they are now and what it took to be unipolar and
how it is challenged today.
Power, since the beginning of human history has been a force that drives man. Every civilization
has aimed to increase its power, locally or globally. How is power defined? According to Dr. Robert
Dahl, political science professor at Yale University,

A more modern example will be the Americans trying to limit the nuclear program of Iran, at this
point with economic sanctions. If a nation manages to limit the power of others to the point where
the balance of power is shifted towards them, then they will create a unipolar system in which they
sit on top. Power is best strong when it is less dispersed (Ferguson, 2003).
To determine if the current International System is a unipolar system we first have to look at the
rise to power of the possible unipolar power. After World War 2, when most of Europe laid in ruins,
two major powers, U.S.A and U.S.S.R, came out strong to become super powers. The United States
was lucky to have no bombs dropped on it infrastructures, it still had a standing industry capable of
mobilizing an army. On the other hand, the U.S.S.R greatly suffered in comparison to the United
States. Fortunately, majority of its industry had still survived up in the Ural Mountains, untouched
by the Nazi invasion. As a result of the destruction of other major powers, both these nations had
an economic advantage in becoming super powers. The world had become bipolar, with power
dispersed between the U.S.A and U.S.S.R. Both super powers were leaders of opposite ideologies
and in a bipolar system the second– tier powers compared and aligned themselves with either powers

Power in Society Essay
A world of system designed to keep people in unjust and unequal positions is held in place by
several interrelated expression of "power over": political power, economic power, physical force,
and ideological power (Bishop, 1994: 36). So, we can say power is defined as a possession of
control, authority or influence over others. In terms of power of dominant groups over subordinate
groups, we define power as domination of one group of people over another in major important
spheres of life. Power inequities have been in existence throughout the history of humanity and the
ways of manifestation evolved from extreme overt oppression to subtle, covert oppression. Three
major forms of power inequalities discussed in this paper are...show more content...
In Marx's time, workers lacked bargaining power through unions, legal strikes or sabotage (Grabb,
1997: 17). As a result, they could not form a united front against employers, and give themselves a
power of collective resistance. In our society, we still can recognize basic elements of Marx's theory.
Today, at the end of twentieth century, capitalism is still a strong and developed system that will
most likely remain to be so for some time. One thing that has changed is that through the
establishment of workers unions, the gap between bourgeoisie and workers has narrowed. The
8–hour work – 8–hour rest – 8–hour sleep system that Marx proposed seems to be in place in many
of the countries around the world. Despite these accomplishments, the power over subordinate
group still exist. Grabb argues that oppression on the class basis may seem absent in capitalist
societies today, because workers are "legally free to choose whether or not to accept to work" for a
capitalist (Grabb, 1997: 16). But, are workers really free to decide? In other terms, what are their
options? For a worker who, by definition, does not own means of production, there is no other choice
to earn a living than to sell his/her labour to the capitalist. Contrary to Marx's theory that

Solar Power Essay example
Solar Power
All life on Earth depends on energy from the sun. Solar energy is the source of energy for
photosynthesis. It provides the warmth necessary for plants and animals to survive. The heat from
the sun causes water on the Earth's surface to evaporate and form clouds that eventually provide
fresh rainwater.
Solar energy is the result of thermonuclear fusion reactions deep within the sun. These reactions
produce so much energy that they keep the surface temperature of the sun at about 10,300B0F. Even
though solar energy is the largest source of energy received by the Earth, its intensity at the Earth's
surface is actually very low due to the large distance between the Earth and the sun and the fact that
the Earth's atmosphere...show more content...
Because the intensity of the sun's radiation at the surface of the Earth is so low, collectors designed to
capture solar energy must be large.
In the sunniest parts of the continental United States, for example, in order for a collector to gather
enough energy to serve one person for one day, the area of the collector's surface must be about 430
square feet. The actual energy that can be used depends on the efficiency of the collector and of the
device that converts the radiation into usable energy.
Flat–plate collectors. The most common flat–plate collectors consist of a dark metal plate, covered
with one or two sheets of glass, that absorbs heat. The heat is transferred to air or water, called
carrier fluids, that flows past the back of the plate. This heat may be used directly or it may be
transferred to another medium. Flat–plate collectors are used for home and hot–water heating.
Flat–plate collectors typically heat carrier fluids to temperatures ranging from 150B0 to 200B0F.
The efficiency of such collectors varies from 20 to 80 percent.
Concentrating collectors. When higher temperatures are required, a concentrating collector is used.
These collectors reflect and concentrate sunlight from a wide area.
One such device, called a solar furnace, was installed in the Pyrenees in France and has several
acres of mirrors focused on a single target. The energy concentrated at

When used effectively they can be compatible in reaching the organizations goals. Power is defined as the ability to get someone to do something you want done or the ability to make things happen in the way you want them. (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, Chap. 15). Power is important within organizations because it is the way in which management influences individuals to make things happen. When power and influence combine, most of the time "politics" become involved in some manner which may pose some problems. Organizational politics is best described as management influenced by self–interest through the use of means not necessarily...show more content... Information can be controlled to a "need to know" basis and/or just limited to the upper management. This type of power compliments the legitimate power. Finally, there is Representative power in which an organization uses an individual to be there spokesperson both within the organization and when dealing with people outside of the organization. The second source of power that influences individuals and organizations behaviors is known as Personal Power. This power focuses more on the individual's independent nature within the position that he or she has been placed. There are three sources under this power that are apparent in most organizations that are well managed. The first is expert power in which control is based on the knowledge or experience that the individual possesses in the position that he or she holds. Rational persuasion is the power to control behavior by being able to show the desirable out comes through reasonable and acceptable means within an organization. With the diverse personalities within an organization it is essential to have management that is levelheaded and rational. The final basis of control within personal power is referent power. It is controlling an individual's behavior within an organization by allowing them to identify with the source of power that is over them. • 4. Balance of Power Essay In the modern International System where does the balance of power stand? In the past, it had shifted from empire to empire, sometimes many empires held power at once. To explain the polarity of the world today we must first examine the definition of power in order to know what it means to have power and how it spreads. Then we must look at the polarity of the past to determine how the powers of today got to where they are now and what it took to be unipolar and how it is challenged today. Power, since the beginning of human history has been a force that drives man. Every civilization has aimed to increase its power, locally or globally. How is power defined? According to Dr. Robert Dahl, political science professor at Yale University, ...show more content... A more modern example will be the Americans trying to limit the nuclear program of Iran, at this point with economic sanctions. If a nation manages to limit the power of others to the point where the balance of power is shifted towards them, then they will create a unipolar system in which they sit on top. Power is best strong when it is less dispersed (Ferguson, 2003). To determine if the current International System is a unipolar system we first have to look at the rise to power of the possible unipolar power. After World War 2, when most of Europe laid in ruins, two major powers, U.S.A and U.S.S.R, came out strong to become super powers. The United States was lucky to have no bombs dropped on it infrastructures, it still had a standing industry capable of mobilizing an army. On the other hand, the U.S.S.R greatly suffered in comparison to the United States. Fortunately, majority of its industry had still survived up in the Ural Mountains, untouched by the Nazi invasion. As a result of the destruction of other major powers, both these nations had an economic advantage in becoming super powers. The world had become bipolar, with power dispersed between the U.S.A and U.S.S.R. Both super powers were leaders of opposite ideologies and in a bipolar system the second– tier powers compared and aligned themselves with either powers Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Power in Society Essay A world of system designed to keep people in unjust and unequal positions is held in place by several interrelated expression of "power over": political power, economic power, physical force, and ideological power (Bishop, 1994: 36). So, we can say power is defined as a possession of control, authority or influence over others. In terms of power of dominant groups over subordinate groups, we define power as domination of one group of people over another in major important spheres of life. Power inequities have been in existence throughout the history of humanity and the ways of manifestation evolved from extreme overt oppression to subtle, covert oppression. Three major forms of power inequalities discussed in this paper are...show more content... In Marx's time, workers lacked bargaining power through unions, legal strikes or sabotage (Grabb, 1997: 17). As a result, they could not form a united front against employers, and give themselves a power of collective resistance. In our society, we still can recognize basic elements of Marx's theory. Today, at the end of twentieth century, capitalism is still a strong and developed system that will most likely remain to be so for some time. One thing that has changed is that through the establishment of workers unions, the gap between bourgeoisie and workers has narrowed. The 8–hour work – 8–hour rest – 8–hour sleep system that Marx proposed seems to be in place in many of the countries around the world. Despite these accomplishments, the power over subordinate group still exist. Grabb argues that oppression on the class basis may seem absent in capitalist societies today, because workers are "legally free to choose whether or not to accept to work" for a capitalist (Grabb, 1997: 16). But, are workers really free to decide? In other terms, what are their options? For a worker who, by definition, does not own means of production, there is no other choice to earn a living than to sell his/her labour to the capitalist. Contrary to Marx's theory that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Solar Power Essay example Solar Power All life on Earth depends on energy from the sun. Solar energy is the source of energy for photosynthesis. It provides the warmth necessary for plants and animals to survive. The heat from the sun causes water on the Earth's surface to evaporate and form clouds that eventually provide fresh rainwater. Solar energy is the result of thermonuclear fusion reactions deep within the sun. These reactions produce so much energy that they keep the surface temperature of the sun at about 10,300B0F. Even though solar energy is the largest source of energy received by the Earth, its intensity at the Earth's surface is actually very low due to the large distance between the Earth and the sun and the fact that the Earth's atmosphere...show more content... Because the intensity of the sun's radiation at the surface of the Earth is so low, collectors designed to capture solar energy must be large. In the sunniest parts of the continental United States, for example, in order for a collector to gather enough energy to serve one person for one day, the area of the collector's surface must be about 430 square feet. The actual energy that can be used depends on the efficiency of the collector and of the device that converts the radiation into usable energy. Flat–plate collectors. The most common flat–plate collectors consist of a dark metal plate, covered with one or two sheets of glass, that absorbs heat. The heat is transferred to air or water, called carrier fluids, that flows past the back of the plate. This heat may be used directly or it may be transferred to another medium. One such device, called a solar furnace, was installed in the Pyrenees in France and has several acres of mirrors focused on a single target. The energy concentrated at Get more content on HelpWriting.net
