Sweetness And Power Essay
Sweetness and Power is a historical study of sugar and its affect on society and economy
since it was first discovered. Sugar has had a large impact on society and the economy that is not
noticeable unless thoroughly studied. The following is an analysis of the work done by Sidney W.
Mintz in his attempt to enlighten the "educated layperson".
Mintz uses a very basic system for organizing the tremendous amount of data found within
in the book. The book is divided into 5 chapters: "Food, Sociality, and Sugar",
"Production", "Consumption",
"Power", and "Eating and Being". Each of these chapters
discusses different...show more content...
These few lines will be extensively discussed and analyzed in the remainder of the book as the
topics for chapters two through five.
Another important idea proposed by Mintz is that sweetness is naturally desired by
humans. He supports this by reporting on the work of researchers studying infants in the United
States and how they are drawn to sweetness without having prior experience with it. He also states on
page 15 that Alaskan Eskimos "consume sucrose despite the discomforts associated with
the offending items."
Chapter two, as the name implies, discusses the steps taken in the production of sugar,
and how those steps evolved and spread throughout the world. Mintz begins on page 19 by giving
the reader the basic definition of sucrose, "an organic chemical of the carbohydrate
family." He continues by describing the history of sugar cane and the history of
production. He then goes on to describe the economics of sugar production and how it directly
affected world economics. A very important fact discussed in this chapter relates sugar to the
evolution of capitalism. Mintz contends that as sugar becomes less of a symbol of power and more
of a common item for the common person, that mercantilism begins to die out. As this happens,
capitalism begins to play more heavily on the

My Definition Of Power Essay
Much of the information relayed from the article was indeed educational, but more so an eye
opener regarding the term "power". When most people, including myself, think or hear the term
"power" it's often used to relate one being of authority. Yet, here the author takes this term
"power" to whole new level by shedding light unto what power truly means. While it's true power
can be seen as an authority, yet power is so much more than that. Obtaining power can be done in
various ways, such as one's appearance, education, money, domicile, age, class and so much
more. In fact, as I sit here and think about power and how it has actually contributed to my own
life is just crazy. While I never really realized it before, I do have power and in many ways at that.
Understanding this actually saddens me, as so many people in the world actually have little to no
power at all. I don't know why, but this makes me think about when my son doesn't want to eat his
dinner, and I have to tell him that "there are starving kids in Africa who don't get a meal every
day." Because we have...show more content...
While moving along into the next section of the article, although still on the topic of "power" the
author now take a different approach regarding power. Too often when hearing people learn about
the history of Deaf people, their experiences, struggles for equality and so on, they're horrified
and want to help fix their problems. The author makes a great point regarding this want to help/fix
Deaf people's problems. He notes that, rather than us trying to focus on liberating or empowering
Deaf people, we should instead be focused on using our own power to help open doors that had
previously been closed to them. By making things easily accessible for Deaf people they can
liberate and empower themselves, without us doing the work for

Essay on The Power Of Language
The Power of Language
Of all possible human qualities, the one that wields the most power is the ability to use, understand
and communicate effectively through language. A proficient use of language allows us to clearly
communicate an exact idea from one person to another person or group of people. This precise
science of being able to convey exactly what you want equates to the acquisition of power. An
important link between language and power is persuasion. The power of persuasion is so strong it
allows certain individuals to influence, and therefore, control thousands, even millions, of people
and bind them together in search of one common cause.
This tactic of...show more content...
Through Goebbels,
Hitler gained power over the press, radio, theater, films, music, and literature.
People naturally have this feeling, or intuition, about something. They know how they feel and
believe about a subject, but it is something that they don't take the time to verbalize; they merely
contain it in their minds as a belief. However, there are certain people who verbalize and put into
words these internal feelings of the masses and gain the trust of the people. These certain people
are our leaders. By speaking about and placing importance on the beliefs and values that these
people have never before heard articulated, the leaders gain the confidence of the people.
Political leaders are the primary examples of the people we put our trust in. In 1960, John F. Kennedy
was elected to the office of President after four nationally televised debates against vice–president
Richard Nixon.
It was generally conceded that these debates helped Kennedy more than Nixon. In
April of 1961, after Russia successfully launched the first man into outer space,
John Kennedy asked for a greatly increased budget for space research. Kennedy said, powerfully, "I
believe that this nation should commit itself, to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of
landing a man on the moon, and returning him safely to the earth." Kennedy is considered to have

Basis of Power Essay
Bases of Power Essay When speaking on power, the Greek philosopher Aristotle once suggested
"What lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do". Although not always apparent,
everyone possesses power in one form or the other. Power can be defined as the influence that one
person has over another person. The influence an individual possesses can be extended to others
through a variety of dissimilar stratagems. In 1959, social psychologists John French and Bertam
Raven completed a comprehensive study on the bases of power and concluded that power can be
separated into five distinct forms. The five forms of power French and Raven defined are coercive,
reward, legitimate, expert, and referent. This thesis will describe the...show more content...
In addition, the accounting manager utilizes reward power to negotiate employee 2's compressed
work week. Reward power is also present within the sales department group as they collectively
reward employee 3 with a team leader position. In all three of the reward power examples,
dependencies exist to solidify the power. The marketing manager only possesses reward power
provided the employee sees the bonus as a reward. If the employee values their time at home
more than the income the bonus provides, then the reward power of the manager diminishes.
Likewise, if the accounting manager did not have the legitimate power to offer employee 2 a
compressed work week, the manager would not hold reward power. In the final example,
Employee 3 was dependent on the sales group for the reward. Had the group dismissed the sales
pitch, reward power would not even be a consideration. The third form of power that is present in
the given scenario is legitimate power. Legitimate power can be described as the power that one
person has over another because they hold an authoritative position over that person. Most
organizations have a hierarchical structure of leadership and organizational leaders possess legitimate
power equivalent to their position within the hierarchy. Legitimate power is intrinsic to positions of
stature and is considered power by default. However, a

Solar Power Essay example
Solar Power
All life on Earth depends on energy from the sun. Solar energy is the source of energy for
photosynthesis. It provides the warmth necessary for plants and animals to survive. The heat from
the sun causes water on the Earth's surface to evaporate and form clouds that eventually provide
fresh rainwater.
Solar energy is the result of thermonuclear fusion reactions deep within the sun. These reactions
produce so much energy that they keep the surface temperature of the sun at about 10,300B0F. Even
though solar energy is the largest source of energy received by the Earth, its intensity at the Earth's
surface is actually very low due to the large distance between the Earth and the sun and the fact that

Because the intensity of the sun's radiation at the surface of the Earth is so low, collectors designed to
capture solar energy must be large.
In the sunniest parts of the continental United States, for example, in order for a collector to gather
enough energy to serve one person for one day, the area of the collector's surface must be about 430
square feet. The actual energy that can be used depends on the efficiency of the collector and of the
device that converts the radiation into usable energy.
Flat–plate collectors. The most common flat–plate collectors consist of a dark metal plate, covered
with one or two sheets of glass, that absorbs heat. The heat is transferred to air or water, called
carrier fluids, that flows past the back of the plate. This heat may be used directly or it may be
transferred to another medium. Flat–plate collectors are used for home and hot–water heating.
Flat–plate collectors typically heat carrier fluids to temperatures ranging from 150B0 to 200B0F.
The efficiency of such collectors varies from 20 to 80 percent.
Concentrating collectors. When higher temperatures are required, a concentrating collector is used.
These collectors reflect and concentrate sunlight from a wide area.
One such device, called a solar furnace, was installed in the Pyrenees in France and has several
acres of mirrors focused on a single target. The energy concentrated at

The Power Of Super Power Essay
Every human being on Earth wants to find a way to get tasks done the easiest way possible,
always trying to find the short way. With a super power life would be much easier. Just imagine
your friends working hard, trying to get things done, meanwhile you are just chilling because you
know you have a special ability to make it faster and easier, you become efficient. When I was a kid
I wished I was Super Man and save the world, but its almost impossible save a world with 7 billion
people in the world, it would be impossible to have control of every human on Earth. So if you are
planning to save the world you need to think of a power that will help the most people, because you
cant help all of them. So the super power that came in mind is the power of reading minds.Reading
minds is the most awesome thing. All you need to is look that person, you can be far from that
person, but by only looking at them you can start reading mind, its as easy as eating a candy. You

a trauma, or not wanting to read a mind ever again. By reading, you can manipulate people for your
own good, briefly making other people your slaves.
Super Powers need to be something that only you have, because if everybody has, it becomes a
talent not a superpower. Just imagine a world full of people with super powers, there would be no
fun in having super powers, and not only that, it would be a disaster, it would be to much power in

George Orwell 1984 Power Essay
Published in 1948 and set a mere to 36 years into the future, '1984' unfold of George Orwell 's
cynical foreshadowing of the impending threat to democracy in apprehensive post–World War II
period. 1984 is set in the oppressive, dystopian society of Oceania, where the state, led by omnipotent
figurehead of 'Big Brother', governs the lives of the individuals in order to influentially fashion a
community of conformism. Orwell successfully illustrates the tension within power through the lens
of a frail protagonist, reminiscent setting, and narrative suspense. Themes are explored that
exemplify the interplay of power in terms of political work: fabrication of history, the practice of
totalitarian government, and most importantly the elimination of language. Significant symbols and
motifs, such as 'Newspeak', and Big Brother, also efficiently aid in demonstrating the concept of
power in political terms.

Energy and Power
Although I am surrounded by energy and power, I never really knew just how much they mean to
the world. However, after learning about the fundamentals of energy, I have a much deeper
understanding of their magnitude. In this paper, I will reflect back on what I have learned about
energy, and how it has affected me personally. For instance, I know now that the power I am using
to sit here and type is roughly equivalent to the power used by an incandescent light bulb, but that is
only the beginning.
Energy is all around us, but to create power, we need to harness it. I never thought about the fact that
everything on earth has some type of energy, and until this course I never even knew the six different

I never anticipated that the things I learned in just the first few weeks of this course would lead me
to change my own daily activities. Reading about the amounts of energy consumed in past years, and
projections for the future, made me realize we need to start conserving now ("Environmental..."
2001). When I learned how much energy the United States consumed in a single year in BTU's, I
began conserving my energy much more than I used to. I never knew that our country consumed
more energy than is given off in the explosion of a hydrogen bomb ("Annual..."2004). Therefore, I
am much more careful about turning off my lights, conserving my heat, and taking shorter showers.
I would much rather know that I am doing my part to conserve the precious energy that we have,
than know that I am lavishly wasting it. Until this course, I never would have understood the
importance of energy conservation, but being able to convert the amount of energy that I use into
different medias, such as horsepower, watts and Calories, has shown me just how much of a
difference a single person can make (Texas, February 2005).
As a single student in EGEE 101, the knowledge I have gained so far has only affected me, and
maybe a few of my closest friends. As a class, I believe we can make a large difference, and as a
campus, an even larger one. Learning new things about energy everyday

Definition Essay: What Is Power?
What is power? It can mean energy, it can denote ability, it can mean influence. What is power?
Power can be possessed by a nation or just one person. It can mean that people are oppressed,
bullied or told what to do. When we say power, we will connect it with control, if a person has
power, and then he can have the control over things, trade and even people, they are associated. In
every country, the same thing happens everyday. the weak gets weaker, the strong becomes
stronger. The strong has the ability to bully the weak, and make them their slaves or servants.
Although there is not any specific rules in the society, people however, create boundaries between
the poor and the rich. People who have power can perform misdeeds; people who

Evil has been around for centuries and as long as there is good, evil will be present as well. When
someone commits an act of evil they are seen as society downfall or dead weight and are always

Leadership and Power Essay
1. What role have referent power and expert power played in leadership at Intel? Which Intel CEOs
seen to have inclined toward job–countered leader behavior? Toward employee–centered leader
behavior? Toward initiation–structure behavior? Toward consideration behavior?
Referent power comes from being trusted and respected. It based on identification, imitation,
loyalty, or charisma. (Griffin, 549) Expert power comes from one's experiences, skills or knowledge.
(Griffin, 549) Both powers played big role in Intel's leadership. For me, Noyce had high reference
power. As book mentioned "Noyce was loyal and charismatic risk taker". People respected him for

I thing that Gordon Moore was representative of consideration behavior. Consideration behavior
"show concern for subordinates and attempt to establish a worm, friendly, and supportive climate."
(Griffin, 553) He had a hands–off management approach and trusted his employees even more than
Noyce. He minimized his intervention toward employee's job, and let them do their job as long as
they help to reach his goals and visions. Initiating–structural behavior belong to Grain Barrett. This
type of leader "clearly defines the leader–subordinates role, establish formal lines of command, and
determine how tasks will be performed." (Griffin, 553) He is analytical person. He like to analyze
a data and then make decisions based on the result. I don't think that analytical person would let the
company run on its own. He probably analyzed every aspect of the company and make a decision
on how every department should work based on his analysis.
2. Apply the path–goal theory of leadership to Intel's succession of CEOs. Which kind of leader
behavior best applies to each CEO – directive, supportive, participative, achievement–oriented?
According to Griffin, "the path–goal theory of leadership suggests that the primary function of a
leader are to make valued or desired rewords in the workplace and to clarify for the subordinate the
kinds of behavior that will lead to goal accomplishment and valued rewords." (559)
I think that all CEO had to change their style or behavior "to

The Concept of Power Essay
The concept of power is present within various realms of all organizations. Power, however, is not
something that should necessarily be looked at negatively. There are justifiable types of power that
may be important to criminal justice organizations. The main role of power in criminal justice
administration should be to gain compliance from subordinates of all types, and turn that power over
time into acceptable forms of authority (Stojkovic et al., 2008). It is for this reason that power is an
important attribute in criminal justice agencies. It is important as a criminal justice manager, and
agency as a whole, to have legitimate power. Power that is not coercive and works for the good of

Essay 2: Max Weber's study of authority gave birth to his division and classification of three types of
authority. These classifications of authority are often used in various roles in criminal justice
administrations. While Weber believed that power and authority are decidedly different concepts, the
two can be used in conjunction, and often are used for categorization within criminal justice
agencies. Traditional, charismatic, and legal authorities are all well–defined in the use of authority
by criminal justice administrations. Traditional authority is leadership that is based on the historical
customs of a society or group. Within an organization, traditional authority is based on the
precedented methods of operation that have changed little over time (Stojkovic et al., 2008). In
relation to the criminal justice administration, one may view traditional authority in the form of
commanding power of a warden within a corrections system. The warden is the head of the
hierarchy and operates simply in the way that a warden always has operated. In respect to traditional
authority, things do not change because procedures are based on customs and merely continue as
they always have. Weber's second type of influence is charismatic authority. Charismatic authority is
characterized by a leader with rare personal features that attract others to them. Charismatic leaders
have qualities that are powerful and challenging

her heritage. Children are very impressionable and tend to take on others' opinions as their own, but
as they grow older, they develop a greater understanding and perspective of the way things are and
the way they should be. As adults, both Tan and Barrientos learned to accept and embrace the
languages that previously embarrassed them. Barrientos immersed herself in her Mexican heritage

came with being of Mexican ethnicity; her instructors thought she should already know Spanish

Among the most complex systems is a simple yet overwhelming desire for an establishment of
power, if one(it?) does not already exist. Power can be greedy, selfish, aggressive, but also a
necessity for order and peace. It is always controlling. It has existed since the beginning of time
and will continue to play a vital role in the lives of all, forever. In literature, power can be depicted
in a variety of ways, affecting different numbers of people and things. Margaret Atwood's "Helen of

A world of system designed to keep people in unjust and unequal positions is held in place by
several interrelated expression of "power over": political power, economic power, physical force,
and ideological power (Bishop, 1994: 36). So, we can say power is defined as a possession of
control, authority or influence over others. In terms of power of dominant groups over subordinate
groups, we define power as domination of one group of people over another in major important
spheres of life. Power inequities have been in existence throughout the history of humanity and the
ways of manifestation evolved from extreme overt oppression to subtle, covert oppression. Three

In Marx's time, workers lacked bargaining power through unions, legal strikes or sabotage (Grabb,
1997: 17). As a result, they could not form a united front against employers, and give themselves a
power of collective resistance. In our society, we still can recognize basic elements of Marx's theory.
Today, at the end of twentieth century, capitalism is still a strong and developed system that will
most likely remain to be so for some time. One thing that has changed is that through the
establishment of workers unions, the gap between bourgeoisie and workers has narrowed. The
8–hour work – 8–hour rest – 8–hour sleep system that Marx proposed seems to be in place in many
of the countries around the world. Despite these accomplishments, the power over subordinate
group still exist. Grabb argues that oppression on the class basis may seem absent in capitalist
societies today, because workers are "legally free to choose whether or not to accept to work" for a
capitalist (Grabb, 1997: 16). But, are workers really free to decide? In other terms, what are their
options? For a worker who, by definition, does not own means of production, there is no other choice
to earn a living than to sell his/her labour to the capitalist. Contrary to Marx's theory that

Power Definition Essay
When presented a term, everybody's interpretation may vary from the other. A term can have
multiple dimensions where one may experience something that another will never understand. Thus,
definitions are objectified and versatile according to the interpreter. The word "power" is typically
associated with a hierarchy or even an energy source such as solar power or hydroelectric power, but
there is something that has not been defined enough with this term: passion.
It is understandable that the interpretation of power in relation to passion is one of the last things
people would think of, but do tell how one defines the feeling of a first love? Now one may be
thinking "Oh I was dumb back then, I was an epitome of adolescence", but these exhilarating...show

Athletic power is to enhance one's physical strength whereas psychological power is to intensify
one's strength of passion. Although these two powers may be defined as two different experiences
the effects are all quite the same. The body temperature rises, the heart beats faster, the mind grows
numb. All symptoms of a "power bug" bite. Power reeks of confidence and determination and
tastes like aged sweat stored for just the right moment. Being drenched in this elder musk encases
the creator in a fortress that no man can destroy like a cloak of protection. The stronger the
pungency one possesses, the more passionate of a power one retains.
Now that a more in depth and relatable definition of power is present maybe this unrecognized
passionate dimension can be accounted for. No harm is done if this interpretation is still
unnoticeable, but addressing this layer was the sole task. It may be pointless to state an
out–of–the–box viewpoint when there are many ways to decipher a singular term. Whether you
consider power to be a leadership position, natural resource, or a psychological enhancer, who is to
say that your definition of power is any better than

Anna Of Byzantium Essay
Is power a strength or weakness? Power is defined in the Merriam–Webster dictionary as the ability
to do something or act in a particular way. My definition of power is being able to uphold
responsibility. In chapter 24 page 196 it states, "you choked with the silence of spiritual discipline,
and with the streams of your tears, you watered the entire desert". This refers to how in the
Byzantine Empire you are raised to hide your emotions from the world this is a weakness because
you suffer internally, this is also a strength because by hiding your emotions you show no weakness
to other empires. Tracy Barrett writer of "Anna of Byzantium" has an M.A. and Ph.D. in Medieval
Italian Literature from the University of California, Berkeley. She also holds a Bachelor's Degree
with honors in Classics–Archaeology from Brown University. Her interest in ancient and medieval
worlds led to her become an author of historical books. She received a grant from the National
Endowment for the Humanities to study medieval women writers which led to the writing of her
first novel, the award–winning Anna of Byzantium. In "Anna of Byzantium" they discuss the
interactions of the social classes throughout the book. "Take Maria to our chamber... Sophia
nodded... and reached down to Maria... It was not strictly proper for the two of them to be touching
..." (Chapter 8 page 66). In chapter 10 of the textbook they talk about how the military campaigns
and expansion of the empire in the 10th century resulted

Power System Essay
The Distributed is electrical power generation in small scale (usually 1MW to 50MW) near the load
centre using either conventional techniques such as Diesel generators and micro turbines or using
non–conventional techniques such as Photo–Voltaic, wind turbines and small hydro power. This
modern concept of power system is very advantageous as it reduces the load on the grid,
consumers get a reliable power of better quality, and consumers can supply surplus power to the
grid and earn a considerable profit. Thus, adopting this modern concept of power system is not only
beneficial for consumers but also to the utilities. Figure 1.2 Modern Concept of Power System

loads, the systems operate as a standalone AC system. Meanwhile, if these are connected in parallel

So, the above issues can be applied to distributed power systems similarly, and the recent research

Equal load sharing such as the real and reactive power, the load harmonic current among the parallel

  • 1. Sweetness And Power Essay Sweetness and Power is a historical study of sugar and its affect on society and economy since it was first discovered. Sugar has had a large impact on society and the economy that is not noticeable unless thoroughly studied. The following is an analysis of the work done by Sidney W. Mintz in his attempt to enlighten the "educated layperson". Mintz uses a very basic system for organizing the tremendous amount of data found within in the book. The book is divided into 5 chapters: "Food, Sociality, and Sugar", "Production", "Consumption", "Power", and "Eating and Being". Each of these chapters discusses different...show more content... These few lines will be extensively discussed and analyzed in the remainder of the book as the topics for chapters two through five. Another important idea proposed by Mintz is that sweetness is naturally desired by humans. He supports this by reporting on the work of researchers studying infants in the United States and how they are drawn to sweetness without having prior experience with it. He also states on page 15 that Alaskan Eskimos "consume sucrose despite the discomforts associated with the offending items." Chapter two, as the name implies, discusses the steps taken in the production of sugar, and how those steps evolved and spread throughout the world. Mintz begins on page 19 by giving the reader the basic definition of sucrose, "an organic chemical of the carbohydrate family." He continues by describing the history of sugar cane and the history of production. He then goes on to describe the economics of sugar production and how it directly affected world economics. A very important fact discussed in this chapter relates sugar to the evolution of capitalism. Mintz contends that as sugar becomes less of a symbol of power and more of a common item for the common person, that mercantilism begins to die out. As this happens, capitalism begins to play more heavily on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My Definition Of Power Essay Much of the information relayed from the article was indeed educational, but more so an eye opener regarding the term "power". When most people, including myself, think or hear the term "power" it's often used to relate one being of authority. Yet, here the author takes this term "power" to whole new level by shedding light unto what power truly means. While it's true power can be seen as an authority, yet power is so much more than that. Obtaining power can be done in various ways, such as one's appearance, education, money, domicile, age, class and so much more. In fact, as I sit here and think about power and how it has actually contributed to my own life is just crazy. While I never really realized it before, I do have power and in many ways at that. Understanding this actually saddens me, as so many people in the world actually have little to no power at all. I don't know why, but this makes me think about when my son doesn't want to eat his dinner, and I have to tell him that "there are starving kids in Africa who don't get a meal every day." Because we have...show more content... While moving along into the next section of the article, although still on the topic of "power" the author now take a different approach regarding power. Too often when hearing people learn about the history of Deaf people, their experiences, struggles for equality and so on, they're horrified and want to help fix their problems. The author makes a great point regarding this want to help/fix Deaf people's problems. He notes that, rather than us trying to focus on liberating or empowering Deaf people, we should instead be focused on using our own power to help open doors that had previously been closed to them. By making things easily accessible for Deaf people they can liberate and empower themselves, without us doing the work for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay on The Power Of Language The Power of Language Of all possible human qualities, the one that wields the most power is the ability to use, understand and communicate effectively through language. A proficient use of language allows us to clearly communicate an exact idea from one person to another person or group of people. This precise science of being able to convey exactly what you want equates to the acquisition of power. An important link between language and power is persuasion. The power of persuasion is so strong it allows certain individuals to influence, and therefore, control thousands, even millions, of people and bind them together in search of one common cause. This tactic of...show more content... Through Goebbels, Hitler gained power over the press, radio, theater, films, music, and literature. People naturally have this feeling, or intuition, about something. They know how they feel and believe about a subject, but it is something that they don't take the time to verbalize; they merely contain it in their minds as a belief. However, there are certain people who verbalize and put into words these internal feelings of the masses and gain the trust of the people. These certain people are our leaders. By speaking about and placing importance on the beliefs and values that these people have never before heard articulated, the leaders gain the confidence of the people. Political leaders are the primary examples of the people we put our trust in. In 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected to the office of President after four nationally televised debates against vice–president Richard Nixon. It was generally conceded that these debates helped Kennedy more than Nixon. In April of 1961, after Russia successfully launched the first man into outer space, John Kennedy asked for a greatly increased budget for space research. Kennedy said, powerfully, "I believe that this nation should commit itself, to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon, and returning him safely to the earth." Kennedy is considered to have been Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Basis of Power Essay Bases of Power Essay When speaking on power, the Greek philosopher Aristotle once suggested "What lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do". Although not always apparent, everyone possesses power in one form or the other. Power can be defined as the influence that one person has over another person. The influence an individual possesses can be extended to others through a variety of dissimilar stratagems. In 1959, social psychologists John French and Bertam Raven completed a comprehensive study on the bases of power and concluded that power can be separated into five distinct forms. The five forms of power French and Raven defined are coercive, reward, legitimate, expert, and referent. This thesis will describe the...show more content... In addition, the accounting manager utilizes reward power to negotiate employee 2's compressed work week. Reward power is also present within the sales department group as they collectively reward employee 3 with a team leader position. In all three of the reward power examples, dependencies exist to solidify the power. The marketing manager only possesses reward power provided the employee sees the bonus as a reward. If the employee values their time at home more than the income the bonus provides, then the reward power of the manager diminishes. Likewise, if the accounting manager did not have the legitimate power to offer employee 2 a compressed work week, the manager would not hold reward power. In the final example, Employee 3 was dependent on the sales group for the reward. Had the group dismissed the sales pitch, reward power would not even be a consideration. The third form of power that is present in the given scenario is legitimate power. Legitimate power can be described as the power that one person has over another because they hold an authoritative position over that person. Most organizations have a hierarchical structure of leadership and organizational leaders possess legitimate power equivalent to their position within the hierarchy. Legitimate power is intrinsic to positions of stature and is considered power by default. However, a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 6. Solar Power Essay example Solar Power All life on Earth depends on energy from the sun. Solar energy is the source of energy for photosynthesis. It provides the warmth necessary for plants and animals to survive. The heat from the sun causes water on the Earth's surface to evaporate and form clouds that eventually provide fresh rainwater. Solar energy is the result of thermonuclear fusion reactions deep within the sun. These reactions produce so much energy that they keep the surface temperature of the sun at about 10,300B0F. Even though solar energy is the largest source of energy received by the Earth, its intensity at the Earth's surface is actually very low due to the large distance between the Earth and the sun and the fact that the Earth's atmosphere...show more content... Because the intensity of the sun's radiation at the surface of the Earth is so low, collectors designed to capture solar energy must be large. In the sunniest parts of the continental United States, for example, in order for a collector to gather enough energy to serve one person for one day, the area of the collector's surface must be about 430 square feet. The actual energy that can be used depends on the efficiency of the collector and of the device that converts the radiation into usable energy. Flat–plate collectors. The most common flat–plate collectors consist of a dark metal plate, covered with one or two sheets of glass, that absorbs heat. The heat is transferred to air or water, called carrier fluids, that flows past the back of the plate. This heat may be used directly or it may be transferred to another medium. One such device, called a solar furnace, was installed in the Pyrenees in France and has several acres of mirrors focused on a single target. With a super power life would be much easier. Just imagine your friends working hard, trying to get things done, meanwhile you are just chilling because you know you have a special ability to make it faster and easier, you become efficient. When I was a kid I wished I was Super Man and save the world, but its almost impossible save a world with 7 billion people in the world, it would be impossible to have control of every human on Earth. So if you are planning to save the world you need to think of a power that will help the most people, because you cant help all of them. So the super power that came in mind is the power of reading minds.Reading minds is the most awesome thing. George Orwell 1984 Power Essay Published in 1948 and set a mere to 36 years into the future, '1984' unfold of George Orwell 's cynical foreshadowing of the impending threat to democracy in apprehensive post–World War II period. 1984 is set in the oppressive, dystopian society of Oceania, where the state, led by omnipotent figurehead of 'Big Brother', governs the lives of the individuals in order to influentially fashion a community of conformism. Orwell successfully illustrates the tension within power through the lens of a frail protagonist, reminiscent setting, and narrative suspense. Themes are explored that exemplify the interplay of power in terms of political work: fabrication of history, the practice of totalitarian government, and most importantly the elimination of language. Significant symbols and motifs, such as 'Newspeak', and Big Brother, also efficiently aid in demonstrating the concept of power in political terms. "As we deliberately step closer to the grave", said minutes before Winston and Julia are captured, portrays Winston's fatalistic nature and foreshadows the inescapable doom. • 9. Energy and Power Essay Energy and Power Although I am surrounded by energy and power, I never really knew just how much they mean to the world. However, after learning about the fundamentals of energy, I have a much deeper understanding of their magnitude. In this paper, I will reflect back on what I have learned about energy, and how it has affected me personally. For instance, I know now that the power I am using to sit here and type is roughly equivalent to the power used by an incandescent light bulb, but that is only the beginning. Energy is all around us, but to create power, we need to harness it. I never thought about the fact that everything on earth has some type of energy, and until this course I never even knew the six different types....show more content... I never anticipated that the things I learned in just the first few weeks of this course would lead me to change my own daily activities. Reading about the amounts of energy consumed in past years, and projections for the future, made me realize we need to start conserving now ("Environmental..." 2001). When I learned how much energy the United States consumed in a single year in BTU's, I began conserving my energy much more than I used to. I never knew that our country consumed more energy than is given off in the explosion of a hydrogen bomb ("Annual..."2004). Therefore, I am much more careful about turning off my lights, conserving my heat, and taking shorter showers. I would much rather know that I am doing my part to conserve the precious energy that we have, than know that I am lavishly wasting it. Until this course, I never would have understood the importance of energy conservation, but being able to convert the amount of energy that I use into different medias, such as horsepower, watts and Calories, has shown me just how much of a difference a single person can make (Texas, February 2005). As a single student in EGEE 101, the knowledge I have gained so far has only affected me, and maybe a few of my closest friends. As a class, I believe we can make a large difference, and as a campus, an even larger one. Learning new things about energy everyday Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It can mean that people are oppressed, bullied or told what to do. When we say power, we will connect it with control, if a person has power, and then he can have the control over things, trade and even people, they are associated. In every country, the same thing happens everyday. the weak gets weaker, the strong becomes stronger. The strong has the ability to bully the weak, and make them their slaves or servants. • 12. Leadership and Power Essay 1. What role have referent power and expert power played in leadership at Intel? Which Intel CEOs seen to have inclined toward job–countered leader behavior? Toward employee–centered leader behavior? Toward initiation–structure behavior? Toward consideration behavior? Referent power comes from being trusted and respected. It based on identification, imitation, loyalty, or charisma. (Griffin, 549) Expert power comes from one's experiences, skills or knowledge. (Griffin, 549) Both powers played big role in Intel's leadership. For me, Noyce had high reference power. As book mentioned "Noyce was loyal and charismatic risk taker". People respected him for his personality and ability to know "when his people new what they were doing"....show more content... I thing that Gordon Moore was representative of consideration behavior. Consideration behavior "show concern for subordinates and attempt to establish a worm, friendly, and supportive climate." (Griffin, 553) He had a hands–off management approach and trusted his employees even more than Noyce. He minimized his intervention toward employee's job, and let them do their job as long as they help to reach his goals and visions. Initiating–structural behavior belong to Grain Barrett. This type of leader "clearly defines the leader–subordinates role, establish formal lines of command, and determine how tasks will be performed." (Griffin, 553) He is analytical person. He like to analyze a data and then make decisions based on the result. I don't think that analytical person would let the company run on its own. He probably analyzed every aspect of the company and make a decision on how every department should work based on his analysis. 2. Apply the path–goal theory of leadership to Intel's succession of CEOs. Which kind of leader behavior best applies to each CEO – directive, supportive, participative, achievement–oriented? According to Griffin, "the path–goal theory of leadership suggests that the primary function of a leader are to make valued or desired rewords in the workplace and to clarify for the subordinate the kinds of behavior that will lead to goal accomplishment and valued rewords." (559) I think that all CEO had to change their style or behavior "to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. The Concept of Power Essay The concept of power is present within various realms of all organizations. Power, however, is not something that should necessarily be looked at negatively. There are justifiable types of power that may be important to criminal justice organizations. The main role of power in criminal justice administration should be to gain compliance from subordinates of all types, and turn that power over time into acceptable forms of authority (Stojkovic et al., 2008). It is for this reason that power is an important attribute in criminal justice agencies. It is important as a criminal justice manager, and agency as a whole, to have legitimate power. Power that is not coercive and works for the good of the organization is beneficial in gathering...show more content... Essay 2: Max Weber's study of authority gave birth to his division and classification of three types of authority. These classifications of authority are often used in various roles in criminal justice administrations. While Weber believed that power and authority are decidedly different concepts, the two can be used in conjunction, and often are used for categorization within criminal justice agencies. Traditional, charismatic, and legal authorities are all well–defined in the use of authority by criminal justice administrations. Traditional authority is leadership that is based on the historical customs of a society or group. Within an organization, traditional authority is based on the precedented methods of operation that have changed little over time (Stojkovic et al., 2008). In relation to the criminal justice administration, one may view traditional authority in the form of commanding power of a warden within a corrections system. The warden is the head of the hierarchy and operates simply in the way that a warden always has operated. In respect to traditional authority, things do not change because procedures are based on customs and merely continue as they always have. Weber's second type of influence is charismatic authority. Charismatic authority is characterized by a leader with rare personal features that attract others to them. Charismatic leaders have qualities that are powerful and challenging Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. The Power of Language Essay examples The Power of Language Language plays an important role in communication by bringing people together and enriching their relationships. Language can also alienate those who do not speak it properly, or at all, from those who do. The essays, Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan, best known for her book, The Joy Luck Club, and Se Habla Espanol, by Tanya Barrientos, delve into the many powers that language holds. These essays reflect how by not speaking a language in proper form and by not speaking a language at all, affects the lives of the subjects of the stories. People who can speak a certain language, but only in 'broken' form, are generally looked down upon by native language speakers. It meant being left off the cheerleading squad and receiving a condescending smile from the guidance counselor when you said you planned on becoming a lawyer or a doctor" (561). They are not respected in a lot of communities, they live dirty, and they have bad jobs. These stereotypes are reasons why Barrientos did not want to be called Mexican and never wanted to learn Spanish. If diversity had been celebrated when Barrientos was a child, as it is celebrated and honored now, she would have grown up speaking Spanish and being proud of her heritage. Children are very impressionable and tend to take on others' opinions as their own, but as they grow older, they develop a greater understanding and perspective of the way things are and the way they should be. As adults, both Tan and Barrientos learned to accept and embrace the languages that previously embarrassed them. Barrientos immersed herself in her Mexican heritage and enrolled in many Spanish classes. With each enrollment, she faced yet another stereotype that came with being of Mexican ethnicity; her instructors thought she should already know Spanish since she was Latina. Barrientos is now determined to learn her native language. Tan has learned to love the way in Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Power can be greedy, selfish, aggressive, but also a necessity for order and peace. It is always controlling. It has existed since the beginning of time and will continue to play a vital role in the lives of all, forever. In literature, power can be depicted in a variety of ways, affecting different numbers of people and things. Margaret Atwood's "Helen of Troy Does Countertop Dancing", Toni Cade Bambara's "The Lesson",Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House", and Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" each uniquely examine the influence of power in their characters' lives. Nora is submissive to his dominant commands, and obeys him, possibly because she is fearful of losing him or her life. Krogstad, though, has the upper hand due to the financial loan and debt that Nora has withheld from her husband. Krogstad blackmails Nora with a letter that he threatens to give her husband if she does not fix his problems with Torvald. Nora feels obligated to both men, for the welfare of herself and her family to do as they say. Of course, with an excessive amount of power comes conflict. The extent to which power drives one to their breaking point can be directly connected to their attachment to the individual controlling them. For Nora, the guilt, fear and stress that grew within her push her to new extremes. As she put her full trust in Krogstad and her life in the hands of her family, she realizes she can no longer handle her dissatisfaction in the games they play with her heart. She contemplates suicide, to permanently terminate the power exerted over her, but is reminded by Krogstad that he would "still have [Torvald] completely in power" (Isben 588). Instead, she decides to live her life by leaving her husband and children, after telling Torvald "It's your fault I've done nothing with my life" (597) and wanting more than a superficial relationship. • 17. Power in Society Essay A world of system designed to keep people in unjust and unequal positions is held in place by several interrelated expression of "power over": political power, economic power, physical force, and ideological power (Bishop, 1994: 36). So, we can say power is defined as a possession of control, authority or influence over others. In terms of power of dominant groups over subordinate groups, we define power as domination of one group of people over another in major important spheres of life. Power inequities have been in existence throughout the history of humanity and the ways of manifestation evolved from extreme overt oppression to subtle, covert oppression. Three major forms of power inequalities discussed in this paper are...show more content... In Marx's time, workers lacked bargaining power through unions, legal strikes or sabotage (Grabb, 1997: 17). As a result, they could not form a united front against employers, and give themselves a power of collective resistance. In our society, we still can recognize basic elements of Marx's theory. Today, at the end of twentieth century, capitalism is still a strong and developed system that will most likely remain to be so for some time. One thing that has changed is that through the establishment of workers unions, the gap between bourgeoisie and workers has narrowed. The 8–hour work – 8–hour rest – 8–hour sleep system that Marx proposed seems to be in place in many of the countries around the world. Despite these accomplishments, the power over subordinate group still exist. Grabb argues that oppression on the class basis may seem absent in capitalist societies today, because workers are "legally free to choose whether or not to accept to work" for a capitalist (Grabb, 1997: 16). But, are workers really free to decide? In other terms, what are their options? For a worker who, by definition, does not own means of production, there is no other choice to earn a living than to sell his/her labour to the capitalist. • 18. Power Definition Essay When presented a term, everybody's interpretation may vary from the other. A term can have multiple dimensions where one may experience something that another will never understand. Thus, definitions are objectified and versatile according to the interpreter. The word "power" is typically associated with a hierarchy or even an energy source such as solar power or hydroelectric power, but there is something that has not been defined enough with this term: passion. It is understandable that the interpretation of power in relation to passion is one of the last things people would think of, but do tell how one defines the feeling of a first love? Now one may be thinking "Oh I was dumb back then, I was an epitome of adolescence", but these exhilarating...show more content... Athletic power is to enhance one's physical strength whereas psychological power is to intensify one's strength of passion. Although these two powers may be defined as two different experiences the effects are all quite the same. The body temperature rises, the heart beats faster, the mind grows numb. All symptoms of a "power bug" bite. Power reeks of confidence and determination and tastes like aged sweat stored for just the right moment. Being drenched in this elder musk encases the creator in a fortress that no man can destroy like a cloak of protection. The stronger the pungency one possesses, the more passionate of a power one retains. Now that a more in depth and relatable definition of power is present maybe this unrecognized passionate dimension can be accounted for. No harm is done if this interpretation is still unnoticeable, but addressing this layer was the sole task. It may be pointless to state an out–of–the–box viewpoint when there are many ways to decipher a singular term. • 19. Anna Of Byzantium Essay Is power a strength or weakness? Power is defined in the Merriam–Webster dictionary as the ability to do something or act in a particular way. My definition of power is being able to uphold responsibility. In chapter 24 page 196 it states, "you choked with the silence of spiritual discipline, and with the streams of your tears, you watered the entire desert". This refers to how in the Byzantine Empire you are raised to hide your emotions from the world this is a weakness because you suffer internally, this is also a strength because by hiding your emotions you show no weakness to other empires. Tracy Barrett writer of "Anna of Byzantium" has an M.A. and Ph.D. in Medieval Italian Literature from the University of California, Berkeley. She also holds a Bachelor's Degree with honors in Classics–Archaeology from Brown University. Her interest in ancient and medieval worlds led to her become an author of historical books. She received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study medieval women writers which led to the writing of her first novel, the award–winning Anna of Byzantium. In "Anna of Byzantium" they discuss the interactions of the social classes throughout the book. "Take Maria to our chamber... Sophia nodded... and reached down to Maria... It was not strictly proper for the two of them to be touching ..." (Chapter 8 page 66). Power System Essay The Distributed is electrical power generation in small scale (usually 1MW to 50MW) near the load centre using either conventional techniques such as Diesel generators and micro turbines or using non–conventional techniques such as Photo–Voltaic, wind turbines and small hydro power. This modern concept of power system is very advantageous as it reduces the load on the grid, consumers get a reliable power of better quality, and consumers can supply surplus power to the grid and earn a considerable profit. Thus, adopting this modern concept of power system is not only beneficial for consumers but also to the utilities.
