The individual that I chose to interview, we will refer to her as Ms. M, is a long
standing member of the counseling community and a personal and professional
mentor of mine. Currently she works for the state in the social services field, though
she still uses her dependency counselor skills, it is not to the same extent that she
once did. However, because of her qualifications she is still able to conduct
assessments, offer counseling, and help clients recognize and navigate potential
addiction pitfalls. For this interviewwe spoke about her initial entry into the field and
her time as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) in the women s
prison system.
When Ms. M initially entered the counseling field she did so with the intent of
obtaining an associate degree in psychology. During her studies she found that she
needed to work while she attended school; professor suggested she investigate
becoming an LCDC, something that Ms. M took to quite naturally. Her initial
position was in conjunction with a program in the women s prison. Her time began
as a Counselor Intern for 2.5 years before becoming a Licensed Counselor I. She then

My arm hairs rose and goosebumps appeared on my skin as I stared dumbfounded
into the portal. Could I do this? I decided I could, and I ran into the portal. While

where I was standing more than 10 meters, yet the path continued past the waterfall.
My heart felt like it will beat out of my body. I had to find a safe way to get down.
Glancing around, my attention turned to a fallen tree trunk with a deep cut in it
situated on the ground, which I thought resembled a boat. I decided that I would use
it to get down the waterfall. Carefully, I push the boat to the edge of the crumbly cliff
and position myself in the cut out portion of it. Inching my butt forward, the tree
trunk begins to move until I could no longer feel the
