Gender Roles in Great Expectations Essay
Gender Roles in Great Expectations
The importance of the Victorian ideal of motherhood is glimpsed in Charles Dickens s personal
life. Dickens s main complaint against his wife when he separated from her was her terrible
parenting. Around the time that his separation from his wife was being finalized, Dickens
complains of Catherine in a letter to his friend Angela Burdett Coutts: She does not and never did
care for the children; and the children do not and they never did care for her (qtd. in Slater 146).
From evidence in other letters and the seeming abruptness with which Dickens took on this point of
view, Dickens biographer Michael Slater suggests that this was something that Dickens had to get ...

From the writing on his gravestone, Pip perceives his father as square, stout, dark man, with curly
black hair (23; ch. 1). Similarly, Pip reports Mrs. Joe as having black hair and eyes (28; ch. 1).Pip
infers his mother s appearance from her gravestone as well: from the turn of the inscription ... I
drew a childish conclusion that my mother was freckled and sickly (23; ch. 1). Joe, although not
freckled, has light skin with features far more feminine than Mrs. Joe s: Joe was a fair man,
with curls of flaxen hair on each side of his smooth face, and with eyes of such a very undecided
blue (28; ch. 1). Pip s physical description of all these parent figures reveals the ambivalent gender
identities in the Gargery home. Joe s physical appearance seems more feminine, and he is much
more nurturing than Mrs. Joe, who is described in terms similar to Pip s deceased father.
Mrs. Joe is described in some masculine ways, but her behavior is the most significant indicator
of her desire not to be trapped in the traditional feminine domestic role. Mrs. Joe s emotional
distance from her family is exemplified in the apron that she wears: she almost always wore a
coarse apron ... having a square impregnable bib in front, that was stuck full of pins and needles
(28; ch. 2). Dickens use of the word impregnable evinces many non maternal associations

The Popularity of John Constable s Paintings Dedhame...
John Constable was a 19th century English Romantic painter. Constable is known best for his
landscape paintings, he believed that his paintings should come right from nature instead of
imagination. He made hundreds of outdoor oil sketches, he was said to be his happiest when
painting places he knew well. His landscapes were usually of the area surrounding his home that
he lived in while growing up. which is now locally referred as Constable Country . Constable was
influenced by dutch artist, Jacob Van Ruisdael. John s most famous paintings were Dedhame Vale
and The Hay Wain his realism and vitality make his works very original. John Constables paintings
are now very popular in British art, however in his life time they were not very popular in England,
he only found success in France.
John had four very strong styles of painting which were usage of light, type of brushstroke, and
composition. His usage of light really separated himself from other artist in history, he found a
way to make his paintings look more realistic by adding red and green together in his trees for
example. That specific color addition was never seen before him and really caught the eye of
people in his time. He had a impressive natural brushstroke which in The Royal Academy wasn t
very popular. Only later after his passing was his technique actually appreciated and became a
normal use. Lastly his composition, he loved to paint exactly what he saw in front of him, he
rarely used realism in his

Research Methodology Of A Research Approach Essay
3. Research Methodology In order to address the objectives set out in this research, a quantitative
research approach has been employed and follows models developed by Tinbergen (1962),
MacCullum (1995), Andrew (2002), and Augustin and Tawah (2012). The study is designed in
such a way that it doesn t take the entire model developed by any one of these scholars, instead it
adopts those variables which are appropraite to the situation under investigatation and adds some
relevant explanatory variables. 3.1. Research Design In this study, 11 independent variables have
been used to measure the pattern of the dependent variable. Dependent variable vary by the factors
that influence them where as independent variables stand on their own changes in other variables
in the model have no effect on them. An independent variable in one context may be a dependent
variable in another. The dependent variable in this research is the average of bilateral trade and the
research is designed to learn more about the determinants of the direction of trade in the EAC
member states. GDP in both trading partners, distance between the centers in both the trading
partners, number of people in both countries, membership in a preferential trade agreement, the
existence of common border, language, having sea gate, colonial ties, and membership in the EAC
regional integration are the independent variables. 3.2. Model Specification Trade flow modelling

Upper Limbs Experiment
To become familiar with the scientific method and know how to use the metric system of
measurement. A person who has long upper limbs tends to be tall and vice versa. The length of a
person s arm in centimeter is equal to 40% of his or her height in centimeter. Materials needed for
this experiment are the calculator, metric stick or measuring tape, and 5 students. The formula to
calculate the expected arm length is the height in centimeter times 0.4. If the experiment could be
done again, the subjects could all be boys upper limb length and height or could all be girls upper
limb length and height. Then, the student could see the difference between the girls and boys upper
limb length and height. An error that could have happened is that

The Pros And Cons Of Erga Omnes
In the international law, believed that as cooperation between state like entities most probably
started with simple trade agreements. These agreements were usually concluded on a bilateral level
and defined the relationship between two states. The idea of an international community only
appeared much later and its first indications can be traced back to the 17th century with the famous
peace treatiesof Westphalia, when states stroke for a balance of power. However, only in the 19th
century states began to develop international treaties in which general rules were laid out such as
the Declaration of Paris regarding the freedom of the sea (1856) or the General Act of the Brussels
Conference in 1890 that established an International Maritime... Show more content on

The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early...
The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early Nineteen Thirties The late 1920s in America was a
particularly tumultuous period of time for the country. The Wall Street Crash in 1929 had led to
high levels of unemployment and dissatisfaction within the country. The Depression (1929 1934),
which was a direct result of The Wall Street Crash, led to a breakdown of industry and commerce
within the country and weakened its global position as a superpower. People began to realise that

Dream which suggested that success, in the democratic and classless society guaranteed by the...

During this period the rise of urban gang rule and mobsters was unprecedented, mainly emerging
from minority immigrant groups (Jewish/Italian/Irish). Initially the gangsters of the period were
seen as high achievers as they were associated with the proletariat and seemed to be capable of
rising above there roots, even during hard times in America, and achieve wealth. When considering
the socio economic factors it is easy to understand why such men were considered as gangster
heroes [3] who represented the people, however the only way that gangsters could achieve this
wealth, subsequently fulfilling the American Dream, was by stealing it. Accruing capital meant
accruing power over others [4]. Therefore it could be argued that the success gangsters
exemplified was a perverse form of the American dream as it disregarded some of the key elements
of the ideal. The fact that at this stage in America gangsters were the only group within society who
could make upward mobility believable, tells much about how legitimate institutions had failed but
that mobility was still at the core of what Americans held to be the American dream [5].
In the early 1930 s productions began within Hollywood of what were commonly described as
social problem pictures [6], these films dealt specifically with the social difficulties of the period
such as unemployment/labour struggles ( Black

The s Ski Emporium For Its State Of The Art Ski Equipment
In business for twenty five years, consumers recognize Dunn s Ski Emporium for its state of the
art ski equipment and repairs offered under one roof. It offers moderate prices to skiers in the
bustling town of Vail, Colorado. Dunn s Ski Emporium has a cozy ambiance, with a Western
dГ©cor and a two story fireplace with large windows that overlook the Rocky Mountains.
Catering to skiers, the sporting goods store helps many skiers with their broken or challenged
ski equipment. They specialize in hourly turn around times on repairs and one day pick up
adjustments on new equipment. This fast service has set Dunn s sporting goods store way
above their competitors in the area for return business from both locals and visitors. Skiers can
ski right to their door and leave from their back door to get back on the slopes. The staff is
friendly, knowledgeable, and local. Most of them work year round. Dunn has decided to expand
his business. For some time, Dunn noticed that the Deli next door picks up a lot of his business
from the waiting repair customers and he has seen the Deli customers step in to purchase gloves,
goggles, and other merchandise after eating at the deli. The Deli would make an interesting
addition to his future business plans. The Deli, like Dunn s Ski Emporium, has always done a
brisk business especially in season. Designed in a similar western motif, Dunn thought he would be
able to expand easily to include the Deli into his Emporium. The cross traffic

Does Political Journalism Affect The Uk Adequately Serve...
Does political journalism in the UK adequately serve the needs of a democratic political system?
The newspapers in the United Kingdom tend to take a partisan line in their reporting. According to
Michael Schudson (2001,165) the concept that a journalist should be objective is relatively new
and cannot be applied identically to all countries and contexts. 24, mass media politics ) He argues
that the need to be objective as a journalist is felt more strongly in the UK than in countries such
as Germany or China. There is an obvious distinction between what each citizen would choose to
read about. The middle class and business sector have a preference for the free market policies
such as privitisation, disposal of the welfare state, trade ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An article written in The Sun, with the headline If Kinnock wins today will the last person to
leave Britain please turn out the lights? has been thought of as contribution to the Conservative

stating it was the Sun wot won it. This was repeated by The Sun in 2015 general election, using a

News Corporation accounted for six popular national newspapers in the UK. This level of
ownership impacts the variety of ideas and values that can circulate. Concentration of media
ownership threatens democracy in political journalism(Baker, 2007), leading to over representation
of political viewpoints, values that are favoured by media owners. There is a negative correlation
between media domination and levels of pluralism which is needed in society, to sustain
representation. The concentration of media ownership leads to less competing suppliers, thus
leaving a gap in a democratic political system. Due to Rupert Murdoch s large media empire, it
has been said that he has wielded political power through his influence over headlines. It could be
interpreted this way when considering the support given by News Corporation owned newspapers,
to Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s and Tony Blairin 1997. The impact of Rupert Murdoch can also

A Comparison Of Christianity In Two Epistles Of Virginity...
Without faith, no one would be able to enter the kingdom of God. The walk of the true virgin
provides a valuable standpoint for the modern day christian. The true virgin displays that faith
without works means nothing, and that works are meant to further their walk with God. Through
faith and trust in God, the true virgin becomes a divine ambassador of Christ; the rewards that
follow his or her walk will prevail over all evil. All Christians can learn who to be in Christ by
following the walk of the virgin. Christians do not enter the kingdom of God through beauty or
eloquence nor does their faith get displayed by these things. The followers of Christ in the Two
Epistles of Virginity demonstrate their faith through their works, and Christians

Working With A Debate Lawyer Essay
A probate lawyer is one of the best tools to have at your disposal if you have been chosen to be
the executor of an individual s will or if you are the beneficiary of someone s estate, mostly
because the probate lawyer can ensure that everything is done correctly when it comes to
distributing all of the assets. Listed below are two of the many reasons to work with a probate
lawyer. They Can Ensure That All Required Debts Are Paid Correctly The most important task
that many probate lawyers can help you with is ensuring that all the required debts are paid
correctly by the estate. For example, the probate lawyer can look at the various types of debts
that were left behind by the estate and ensure that not only are the required debts paid but that
they will be paid in the right order. This is important because there can be a number of fines and
penalties that can be assessed if you paid the wrong debt before someone who held a higher
priority debt or if you begin paying other debts before paying the estate taxes. However,
determining who has priority over who when it comes to paying these debts can be extremely
tricky as they can vary quite a bit depending on your area, so it is always best to consult with a
probate lawyer to see what the laws in your particular area dictate. They Can Help... Show more

Special Education In The 1890s
In order to have a good understanding of Special Educational Needs and how the education system
accommodates for children with SEN, it is important to know how it has developed over the past
hundred or so years.
In 1886, the Egerton Commission was set up to view the educational provision of children who
were deaf, blind or dumb. By 1888, the Egerton Commission had begun including the education of
those from ‘exceptional circumstances’ who would appear to need
‘exceptional methods of educationâ€events which unfolded around this time had a
large impact on how special needs was viewed and still affects special education needs provision
now. Around this time the idea of segregated education was formed and this is the basis for the

In 1889 it was suggested that children who were considered to be feeble minded children were to
continue to be educated within the mainstream system but within education classes and children
considered to be educable imbeciles were to be educated in special institutions. These
recommendations led to the opening of of special schools in the 1890s.
In 1898, the government expressed a lack of defining criteria for these groups and therefore the
difficulty in defining labels and correct education for children with special education needs. This
led to the Departmental Committee on Defective and Epileptic Children to create the subgroup
‘the ability to earn a living’.Children who were considered as able to earn a living
were children previously labeled as feeble minded whereas children who were imbeciles or idiots
were considered as unable to earn a living.
By 1913, the Board of Education’s Chief Medical Officer decided to group children into
five categories: the mentally normal child, the dull or backward child, the feeble minded child, the
imbecile child, the idiot. This shows that educators were beginning to have a greater understanding
of different abilities. the Board of Educators was also beginning to understand that the lack

Slavery African American Slavery
Slavery in North America became crucial for African Americans to secure their freedom. Since,
many white indentured servants became unavailable, enslaved Africans had to replace them. Along
their journey to obtain their freedom, the numbers of enslaved Africans started to drastically
increase, and soon they started to develop their own culture. Slave labor throughout the Middle,
Southern, and New England colonies differed as the thirteen coloniesshowed how enslaved
Africans slowly became African Americans. For instance, enslaved Africans who arrived in the
Chesapeake Bay area started to see how rough conditions were for them than anyone else. Many
of the laws passed emphasized how harsh conditions were for enslaved Africans. Soon, Africans
started to see how they were inferior to other races. A 1662 law made the enslaved status of black
women heritable, decreeing that all children borne in this country shall be held bond or free only
according to the condition of the mother.
The status of the mother determined the status of the children. [Women] had no rights of any kind
and no legal authority over anyone even their children who belonged to their owners. Even if
enslaved women wanted to decide whether or not their child will be enslaved, the decision will
already be made for them. Thus, showing how conditions were for enslaved Africans in the

What Is The Significance Of Friday Night Lights
H.G. Bissinger makes it clear that while Odessa is a unique place, the ideas he presents can be
true almost anywhere: Odessa is the setting for this book, but it could be anyplace in this vast
land where, on a Friday night, a set of spindly stadium lights rises to the heavens to so
powerfully, and so briefly, ignite the darkness (XIV). Friday Night Lights, a book by H.G.
Bissinger, is set in Odessa, a small town located in Texas, where football is revered by the entire
town. Bissinger talks about the enormous effect of sports on American life and how it creates a
sense of false hope (XII). Lewis H. Lapham, a famous American writer, commented on the purpose

Sports are a large part of America s culture as well as Odessa s. In Friday Night Lights, the
players spend their entire lives training to be successful because sports are all they have to look
forward to. During the final game of the season to make it to state, Ronnie Beavers told his
team, This is the last minute of your life (326). Beavers quote shows the importance of the
moment. If Permian does not win the game, they have nothing to look forward to in their future.
This semi final game is much more than a game for Permian. What Beaver is saying is
ridiculous, the Permian players act like Football will determine their future. By following the
players and the town, Bissinger is able to show readers how important sports are in Odessa.
Bissinger notes how it was obvious that the students of Permian hold the town on their
shoulders (XIV). By following the story of the American small town, including many personal
anecdotes, Bissinger shows the effect that sports have in Odessa. Friday Night Lights supports
Lapham s claim that games represent much more than a game. It is not merely a game but a
way of life. Permian players eat, breathe, and live football. Their lives are centralized around one
thing: Football. Bissinger describes the town when he states, If you went to their homes, you
might find black toilet seats, or black seat cushions, or black phone book covers, or black paper
plates, or black clocks, or black felt on their pool tables (39). Bissinger throughout the book
displays how the town revolves around sports. Everything that Odessa does is centered around the
football team. The players train everyday to work to improving their record and that is all that

The Broken A
Having discussed the Broken A , one must now try to define and understand the Broken B , case
in point, Antonius Block, the knight from Det sjunde inseglet. Initially, it should be noted, just as
it was with the squire, that the knight is also a servant. The knight is a servant of God. This
brings into account the first aspect of the Broken B , religiousness and choice. For Kierkegaard
and Judge William, the character and narrator of B , religiosity and ethical choice come hand in
hand. Choose yourself! , as Mooney would claim the B would tell to the A , as A properly ethical

By following this, then the B , as stated by Judge William ... is in effect assuming that authentic
selfhood is possible only on ethical/religious terms. Choice and ethical are internally related.
(Lillegard, 94). If these are true to the B , where the religiosity of the individual plays a part in
their existence, and then added on top of that their ethics is connected to the religious as well, one
ends up with the idea that ethical choice can be made only through these means. If that is the case
for the B , then the knight will only continue to suffer. For the knight, who cannot escape the trap of
brokenness he is sharing with the squire, this has profound implications. If the knight is constantly
questioning his faith, he has come to a stalemate with his own thoughts, as he himself reflects in his
confession

My Leadership Style Analysis
This week I take on Ohio as I learn to grow as a leader.
Today a lot of the things we talked about really hit home with me, and I actually cried in a room
full of strangers as I told them my story and why I chose to be a leader.
But today we talked about resilience. We defined resilience as:
The process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources
of stress.
This definition really spoke to me. I have been facing this day after day ever since April, and
today we had a lady talk to us about it for 2 hours, but it felt like it was only seconds. She helped
me to realize that I am not alone, that I have other sisters out there that are fighting, if not the same

I definitely relate to these characteristics way more... Most of the time they all occur at once.
To fold up into yourself is basically when you look at people and just say I can t with you right
now. You hide away, turn off your phone, turn off all communication with the outside world, and
basically just become one with your bed... and maybe a bag of taco bell. With my depression, I
am guilty of this a lot. People try to talk to me and then I get in trouble because I get irritated that
they won t just leave me alone with myself for a bit... That s often when I storm off. You just hit
that point where you ve had enough and you just need to run away from all your responsibilities.
This was comforting to hear from someone else, because I was starting to worry that maybe part
of my three year old self had held onto parts of my brain. Next is to blame others. You don t want
to accept that you have done wrong or that you have messed up, so you start putting the blame
on other people. Next, you require total control. In a leadership role, sometimes you feel like
you have lost control of a situation, so you try to regain control by taking all of it. You shut
people out, and you tell them that you don t need their help. As a bit of a control freak, like I
said, I am very guilty of this. As I come into contact with more and more leaders on campus, I have
learned to step back and just observe situations and let other people handle them. I have

Premarital Cohabitation And Subsequent Marriage Dissolution
The purpose of this research is to establish if there is a positive or negative correlation between
premarital cohabitation and subsequent marriage dissolution. An extensive literature review was
conducted as means to find data from which a conclusion would be drawn. The literature review
began with a quantitative study was analyzed for its use at being the most effective method for
collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on multiple subjects within one study. A qualitative study
was also analyzed due to the fact that information regarding relationships is often classified as
being unable to be generalizable due to the personal nature of relationships. Drawing a conclusion is
heavily dependent on a meta analysis, which is why the last step in the data collecting process
leaned toward analyzing a meta analysis. The most common conclusion in all of the studies
indicated that premarital cohabitation has a negative effect on marital quality. Premarital
cohabitation is a risk factor that can lead to a subsequent marital dissolution.
Premarital Cohabitation: Does it Play A role in MarriageDissolution

Naylor s NigggerThe Meaning Of A Word
In the essay, Niggger: The Meaning of a Word, Gloria Naylor demonstrates how a word can have
a different meaning to different people depending on one s environment. In another article, The
Word Police, Michiko Kakutani claims that the language that the people use is unreasonable
because of understatement. Both articles illustrate language complexity. However, Naylor uses
her personal examples to argue against a suppression of politically incorrect language in a calm
and conversational tones while Kakutani uses reliable resources to criticize a politically correct
movement in a sarcastic tone. Although both authors deal with the similar subject in their own
unique way, Naylor s essay is better than Kakutani s because Naylor explains her views more
clearly. The first reason why Naylor s essay is better than Kakutani s is because of her attitude
toward her topic. Naylor illustrates her point in a calm and conversational tone to clarify that the
word can have a different meaning due to who use it and how. Her calm tone makes readers know
that she is trying to make a reasonable argument. As is seen in the fourth paragraph when she states,
And what exactly did [n word] mean? (323), the author can make simple statements and proceed to
support how the word is said differently. Naylor is wiling to share her experiences with her
audiences rather than blaming anyone for hearing the n word . Through the sentence, Naylor
demonstrates that she is not emotionally involved because

Descartes Arguments for Substance Dualism

foundations Descartes builds his thesis on, and then looking at his arguments and whether they are

Thus Descartes premises are false and fail to convince us of substance dualism. Moreover,
Descartes relies on having a thorough knowledge of mind and body. We may conclude with
Descartes that thought is necessary to having a mind, and materiality is necessary to having a
body, it does not inevitably follow that there is an entity whose sole nature is to think. Descartes
is limited by his subjective viewpoint that it could not be the case that extension could be another
property of mind. He needs to prove the stronger argument that it is not possible for the mind to
have extension as one of it s properties. Descartes tries to make this proof in his Divisibility
Argument: Similar to this is the Argument from Distinctness which argues for the logical
possibility of separating mind from body. To do this, mind and body would have to be distinct and
thus it would prove both things. I can imagine myself as a thinking thing existing apart from the
body (as shown by the different essences in the argument from essence.). It is conceivable that a

On the Protestant side the Ulster Defence Association and others terrorized the Catholic
population. The violence that lasted for over three decades known as the Troubles has
considerably impacted and affected the lives of all ages, during the Troubles sixty percent of
deaths were due to the Republican military, twenty percent of deaths were due to the loyalists,
ten percent of deaths were due to the British Army, and two percent of deaths were due to the
police. Johnson, Wesley (Statistics of Deaths in the Troubles in Ireland). Restating that over
3,500 people had died and over 35,000 were injured, it was estimated that 103 people were killed
under the age of seventeen during the troubles, an estimated that 150 children under the age of
fourteen were either killed or injured during the troubles. The Troubles had immensely impacted
the lives of children in Northern Ireland; studies suggest intense and severe childhood
experiences as a result of political motivated violence, which even effected children s
development and general sense of wellbeing, even today this is a difficult thing to scale. It is also
said that the children of Ireland lived in the most deprived regions in the United Kingdom due to
the rise in family poverty. Mental health was also greatly affected by the violence the Troubles had
caused. A study was conducted, assessing people aged sixteen to sixty four about their mental

Figurative Language In Shakespeare s Like As The Waves
While writing authors often use figurative language for a variety of reasons. Figurative language
helps makes a piece of literature more appealing and easier to read. In the poem Like as the
Waves by William Shakespeare, a large amount of figurative language. He uses figurative
language to bring more life to the writing and make it more enjoyable to read. Shakespeare s use
of figurative language helps illustrate the theme, time can bring both good and bad outcomes.
One form of figurative language used by Shakespeare in this poem is imagery. The use of
imagery helps create a visual of what is going on and makes the poem more engaging. One
example of his use of imagery is when he writes, Like as the waves make toward the pebbled
shore, so do our minutes hasten to their end, (Shakespeare 1 2). Shakespeare is creating the image
of waves crashing on the shore. He is also creating a simile. By using a simile, Shakespeare is able

He gives human characteristics to many inanimate objects, especially to time. One example of
this is when he writes, ВЁ Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth, And delves the parallels
in beauty s brow (Shakespeare 9 10). He gives this example of personification to help the
demonstrate how he views time and how it affects a person both physically and emotionally. He
views time as destructive and something that is not always good and he uses figurative language
to illustrate this. Another example of this is when he writes, Praising thy worth, despite his cruel
hand (Shakespeare 14). Shakespeare uses personification to show that time can never completely
eliminate a person or an item. Although time taking away loved ones and ideas is awful, cherished
memories that were created over time are left behind. Shakespeare uses a wide variety of
personification in this poem to help illuminate the message he is trying to

The True Metamorphosis
The True Metamorphosis The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka offers much to be critiqued,
including the reason why Gregor Samsa was transformed into a hideous beetle. The truth is
Gregor had put himself into a position of demise long ago. Over the years, he had worked himself
into both physical and mental exhaustion. Gregor was the sole provider, and eventually his family
grew less appreciative of him. His relationship with his family had gone south. They were no

The Decline Of The Middle Ages
The Middle Ages is a medieval time period in Western Europe that lasted from 500 to 1500 C.E.
The Middle Ages began as a result from the collapse of the Roman Empire which began in 31
BCE, and fell in 476 C.E. In around 300 C.E. the emperor of the Rome divided the land for easier
control. This began the decline of Rome. The Western half of Rome fell to Barbarian invaders,
while the eastern half lived on as the Byzantine Empire. The Early Middle Agesbegan shortly after
the western half fell. After the Roman Empire lost its position as the center of power, Western
Europe fell into a time of chaos and warfare. There were a lot of attacks by Vikings, Magyars
(hungarian nomads), and Muslims. The invasions caused disorder, and suffering, and the
government system developed into feudalism. The High Middle Ages followed, the Early
Middle Ages, and was the time period in Western Europe from around the 11th century to the
13th. The Middle Ages are referred to as the Dark Ages because of the disorder, hopelessness of
the time. It is accurate to refer to the Middle Ages (500 1500) as a whole as a the Dark Ages .The
Early Middle Ages meet the qualities of a dark age due to the, lack of government, education, and
dysfunctional economy. However, the high middle ages was a time of improvement for these issues.
It is reasonable to characterize the Middle Ages as a dark age because the government in the Early
Middle Ages was unorganized, and ineffective before the Monarchy began

Inspirational Existentialism
Inspirational Existentialism, Feminism Human Rights; the Life of Simone de Beauvoir
I wish that every human life might be pure transparent freedom.
~Simone de Beauvoir
Imagine living through the two World Wars as they played out in your front yard; the battle for
global power influence destroying the landscape you walk day to day as Capitalism battles
Socialism over ideology, over freedom of the individual, over the freedom of the collective and
over freedom of thought and expression. This was the world that Simone Ernestine Lucie Marie
Bertrand de Beauvoir was born into on the morning of January 9th in Paris, France the year of
1908. She would come to develop her unique existentialist perspective through one of the most
decisive periods in our world s history and through close personal contact with some tremendously
insightful intellectuals formed in the same crucible.
The idealistic notion of individual freedom and the societal unity that was presented through the
propaganda of the time inspired Simone s socialist world view and liberal perspective throughout
her youth. Socialism would remain the basis of her world view for the rest of her life although she
would later come to the realization that true Socialism had not been established anywhere in the
world and in sovereignties that claimed to be Socialist, the plight of women s and human rights
remained dire. Yet history implies that she held true to the notion that somehow a pure Socialist
governance was a noble and viable system within which individuals could realize their individual
freedom and flourish in the pursuit of collective success of the community.
We cannot fault her for her romantic notions of an idealistic society. Ms. Beauvoir did not have the
luxury of historical hind sight to help shape her perspective on Socialism. We now have a plethora
of historical reference to demonstrate that Socialism is a failed ideology that cannot overcome or
ignore human nature; Countries that still practice the system today are held together by Capitalism
in the background of their failed governance.

Analysis Of Enkidu s The Epic
Enkidu s role in the epic explores the idea that humans cultivation of the earth to suit their own
needs will lead to their demise. Enkidu was depicted as androgynous to allow the reader to see
themselves in the journey and allows the narrator more flexibility. Enkidu was described as lush
with head hair like a woman . Gilgamesh recounted a dream to his mother saying, I fell in love
with it like a woman I caressed it . The use of the word it can imply gender is disregarded and
allows the narrator the ability to play with the idea of it being a woman but still leaving room for
the masculine interpretation. In contrast Enkiduwas also described as a strong, fearless and great
warrior. He was said to have the strength of heaven, and mighty will be his strength he was also
said to be valiant in the steppe which signifies that he is fearless in the wild, and he would have
the force of the hero Ninurta, god of war. Enkidu s character is androgynous and his journey
symbolizes that of man s. The story of Enkidu is similar to the creation myth of the Bible.
According to TheTorah.com part 1 The Midrash Adam like Enkidu was created from clay and was
Androgynous. According to Genesis 5:2 of the King James Version Male and female created he

The report provides the insight on the importance of leadership and management qualities in daily
life businesses, whether it is private or public.
Discussion Leadership and management are two important skills that determines your capability in
a business. Leadership is the ability of an individual to lead others on right path, at right time.
Different situation demands different styles of leadership. Leadership is about understanding
others, believing in yourself and work with others to lead your company or business to new level of
success. Management is the functional body which guides and instructs people engaged in an
organization to achieve the targeted goals. Management is considered as most important skill in
modern world. All leading companies, hospitals, schools and all other sectors (public or private) are
paying more intention to improve their management systems. Basically, management is an art of
making problems simple.
Qualities of a Good Leader Rath and Conchie (2009) had explained in their book Strengths Based
Leadership that in order to become a good leader, one should have to be familiar with his or her
strengths and weaknesses. An individual should focus more on his/her strengths than weaknesses
because every individual has different talent .Daniel Goleman (1995) also states that IQ and
Expertise are not only two factors to judge an individual capability in business but there are many
others talents and competences which

Huckleberry Finn Book Analysis
Overtime the n word became a word only Black people are allowed to say. When teaching the
book as is brings up the problem where people do not feel comfortable reading the word over and
over because they know it is not from a black person, it is Huck saying it or another white
person. This however is teachable moment were the students have a opportunity to talk about
the racial history, the teachers should be able to guide the conversation better (Beck). When
correctly guided the students better know our history and we learn from it so in the future we
make better decisions. Because the students are the future decision makers and are therefore
suppose to be openmind of the outcomes. Dr. Nel agrees that the discomfort created by this
book needs a sensitive teacher to guide this experience (Beck). If there is discomfort then
society clearly has not progressed. As Nel said in his interview that only way to teach
Huckleberry Finn the right way is to be uncomfortable and discuss the situation rather than
ignoring it and pretending everything is okay (Beck). In order for the students to acquire the most
knowledge is by receiving the original version of Huckleberry Finn . Schools however have
avoided the dilemma that comes from reading Huckleberry Finn due to its overuse of the n word.
Therefore, one solution has come up to replace the n word with another, because that is the only
problem with the book. The NewSouth Books has partnered up with Alan Gribben to

Allusions In Hamlet Research Paper
During the Elizabethan era, its visual art, music, theatre and literature and any other form of art
went through a Renaissance or rebirth (Alchin). Playwrights had more freedom than ever in this era
when writing their plays and even [embraced] ... ancient Greek and Roman beliefs, myths and

soon enough, everyone generally knew which god was which and which one did what.

This suggests that Hamlet s father has curly hair that is as dazzling and brilliant as the god of Light

The second allusion is of a Roman god: front of Jove himself (III.iv.57). Jove is the English name
for Jupiter, known as the god of all gods, of Light and of Sky (Lindemans). In this allusion,
Shakespeare compares the face or front of King Hamlet to the faultless face of Jupiter, the supreme
god of the Roman pantheon (Lindemans).
The third allusion, An eye like Mars (III.iv.58) refers to the Roman god of War, Mars. Numerous
temples are dedicated to him and a meeting of the Roman army usually occurs at one of his
temples before they go to war (Lindemans). This shows that King Hamlet is as victorious and

A propeller that was commonly used on the boats was the simplest two appendaged dorsal

frequent dorsal was the propeller placed under water with some sort of cage to keep it stable.
This propeller had a very short diameter and a larger width compared to the first propeller. Also,
the appendages were curved in order for the water to be caught and thrust through the propeller.
Efficiency is the ratio of work out over work in. In electrical systems, electrical forces are
applied in order to charge objects and essentially move them. In this project s case the work in is
the rotating motor, and the work out is the force of the propeller. Every student had the same
work in, but different work outs due to the different propeller sizes and types. The work in was
the same because each one was given the same type of motor. It was supplied by two double A
batteries and produced very little force to work with, but in the end made was a fairly good

Role of Women in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit
In the novel Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, by Jeanette Winterson, most of the important,

her mother, a strong, overbearing, eccentric woman, and by Elsie, a prominent member of the

Next Door s behavior.
Throughout the book, many attempts are made by Jeanette s mother to make Jeanette suppress her

Elsie, on the other hand, offers a different approach to life, and serves as a counterexample to
Mother s repressive influences. Elsie is a member of the church who befriends Jeanette and
understands her problems, and is one of the only people with whom Jeanette feels open and

the young protagonist skillfully crafts a sampler which her teachers criticize sharply for it s text,
which reads the summer is ended and we are not yet saved. (Page 39). When

Correlation Between Income And Infant Mortality
Evidence has persisted through the last century that people struggling under the pressures of
poverty often experience inferior lifestyles compared to those with higher incomes, however it is
less apparent to what degree income can truly affect the overall health and well being of different
social classes. People with higher incometypically have better access to healthcare, education,
freedom and equality and in turn will on average have greater overall health, better occupations
amongst many other benefits but it is difficult to accurately establish to what extent these additional
endowments actually contribute to the well being and early health of their infants. And if there is
indeed a connection between income and infantmortality or birth weight, what other conditions
must be held constant or controlled in order for these connections to be statistically significant?
Schady Smitz (2009) took the direction of studying middle income country with specified regularity
and extremity in economic shocks to the system and then attempting to establish a connection with
said shocks to the infant mortality rates. They gathered relevant statistics from countries with over
ten years of infant mortality data and have at least two years of significant negative economic
growth. The list of countries studied was comprised of twelve middle income countries and five
low income countries. Schady Smitz found that only Armenia displayed a true counter cyclical

New York City Although The Catcher in the Rye begins in the fictional town of Agerstown,
Pennsylvania, at the equally fictional Pencey Prep, most of the book takes place in the 1940s,
where Holden goes to rest in a hotel before returning home, and ends up wandering around

New York the unquestionable center of finance and trade. At night, the city s music clubs and

some of city s most famous landmarks. Grand Central Station is the largest train station in the

and development and the various aspects of the clinical trial process would make me an integral
member of project teams and enable me to provide advice throughout the process of compound
development. Once equipped with a degree in MPH biostatistics, I aim to provide expertise in
determining the size of clinical trial, in experimental design and in optimizing the use of limited
resources available. I see my future self as a liaison between healthcare professionals and
communities, working beyond borders and being an instrument of change. This vision fuels my
hopes, gives me an inexhaustible drive, a sense of purpose and my life a meaning. My ambitions
line up impeccably with the research missions of the University of Texas School of Public Health,
particularly, with the Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials and Center for Health Promotion and
Prevention Research. These common interests, along with the expert guidance of your highly
accomplished faculty would surely propel me in the direction of achieving breakthrough scientific...

throughout the Midwest in pursuit of her dream of becoming an actress. After one of her
performances, Marlee got an opportunity to meet Henry Winkler, who would eventually
become her mentor. Unashamed and not intimidated by this famous actor, Marlee approached
him and told him that she wanted to be an actor as well. He encouraged her that she could be
whatever she wanted to in life. All she had to do was imagine it in her heart and her dreams
would come true. I am sure that the Fonz had no idea how big of an impact his words of
encouragement would have on Marlee s life. That this young lady would be the first Deaf actress

Sumerian Vs. Ancient Egyptian Myths
Sumerian Vs. Ancient Egyptian Myths
Both Mythological Cosmologies were similar in the ways they were ruled. Also in the way the
human race was created. They both started out with Gods that ruled the land. In the Egyptian Myth,
the god Re created mankind. In the Sumerian Myth, the God Enki created mankind.
A difference between both myths however was the fact that the Sumerians had a different god for
each city as well as a god for each part of the Earth, and the Egyptians had one God, who made
smaller gods and goddesses. The gods and goddesses of Egypt were as follows: Khepera at dawn,
Re at noon and Atum in the evening, the gods of the sun. Shu, the god of wind. Tefnut, the god of
rain. Geb, the Earth God. The goddess Nut, who was the sky

Concussions In Athletes Research Paper
Spotting any of the symptoms above, is one of the quickest and effective ways for a concussion
to be diagnosed by a person trained to spot these symptoms. Although many of these symptoms,
don t appear or will not be present in an athlete that has sustained a concussion. New ways for
diagnosing concussions, have been developed to better identify the injury, making it easier to
diagnose and treat an athlete who has sustained a hit to the head or neck area. Many concussions,
never have an athlete completely losing consciousness, many athletes experience a momentary
state of confusion or disorientation after being hit in the head.( Bell Ringers are concussions ,
2016) This type of hit to the head is known as a bell ringer ; these types of hits can prove to be
even more dangerous and hazardous to an athlete, because they don t lose consciousness many
trainers, and coaches think that they are still able to play. This, however is not true, if an athlete
were to sustain another concussion, then their chances of getting a more severe injury is

Example Of Operant Conditioning
Operant conditioning is one kind of learning process demonstrated by B.F. Skinner that changes the
behavior through the use of reinforcement and punishment. A behavior can change as a result of the
individual response to stimuli that occur in the environment. According to Staddon and Cerutti
(2003), operant behavior described by Skinner as a behavior that controlled by its consequences is
in practice little different from what had previously been termed instrumental learning and what
most people would call habit (p.115). Basically, in this conditioning, the term reinforcement will be
used to refer to any event that strengthen the behavior, meanwhile the term punishment used in any
event that weaken the behavior. To emphasize, there are two... Show more content on

Critical Analysis Of Madame Bovary

A Fantasy World
In Madame Bovary, Gustave Flaubert shapes Emma, the protagonist, into a woman who
deceives herself, through romantic novels, into believing her life is better than it actually is.
Emma like most things in her life romanticized what marriage would do for her. At the start of
her marriage to Charles, she believed marriage would be the means at which she transitioned
from a farm girl to a wealthy woman. She believed that marriage would bring her all she had
longed for. However, her marriage to Charles is opposite to that. Thus, she is constantly searching
for something or someone to satisfy her. She spends majority of the novel aspiring to be a part of

Flaubert use of they and them, further separates Emma from the festivities of the upper class.
Additionally, as Emma is preparing for the ball, she is striving to appear as extravagant as
possible. She did her hair according to the directions of the hairdresser, and put on the barege
dress (Flaubert, 42 44) Thus, Flaubert emphasizes that Emma s is unable to prepare for the ball
without directions implying that she is not able to be a part of the upper class events without
guidance. Therefore, her only connection to the upper class at the ball are her clothes. Also,
Flaubert further separates Emma and Charles from the rest of the guest, by having them arrive in a
dog cart (Flaubert, 41). Hence, Flaubert advocates that no matter how much the middle class
aspires to be a part of the upper class through material items they will never have the means to do
so. Flaubert further emphasizes the separation between Emma and the rest of the guests when he
writes: Emma was listening to a conversation full of words she did not understand (Flaubert, 45).
Flaubert is highlighting how out of place Emma is, yet how aloof Emma remains. She is still
listening even though she doesn t understand what they are saying. Overall, Flaubert utilizes
perspective in order to highlight Emma s aspirations to be a part of the upper class, through her
appearance and material items. Ultimately, Flaubert is critiquing the French middle class in that

met at all meetings. Meetings must take place at least once per year, though additional meetings
can be scheduled for several reasons, such as the evaluation of progress toward goals, or to
modify the IEP, and meetings require specific people to attend. Each person at a child s Individual

Stereotypes In Jurassic Park
Some of the dinosaur behaviors in the Jurassic Park book by Michael Crichton weren t
scientifically accurate. The dinosaur characteristics described may have been a bit skewed from
what researchers believe. Not all material was made up, it was nice to see the material that was
actually accurate and understandable. Since dinosaurs lived so long ago, before our time, there s
no way to actually know how they actually looked and act besides from the information gathered
from fossils. One detail that stuck out to me was when scientist Dr. Wu believed that he only
grew female dinosaurs to avoid breeding. According to evidence scientists weren t able to
determine the sex of dinosaurs so how would he know if the dinosaurs were all female. Evidence

One fact that was clarified in the book was that Saurapodomorphas didn t like living in swamping
environments but rather dry climate. Some minor details that were interesting were when the
characters in the book said that the dinosaurs smell or that they weren t intelligent. There s no
telling how a dinosaur smelled because no one was already to know. Even though the intelligence
of dinosaur weren t known but many animals learn to adapt and survive. Couldn t scientist make
an estimate of how brain was using the skull of dinosaurs that they discovered? This doesn t
necessarily prove their intelligence but it can be a start. Another detail was that Dilophosaurus
had a poison that they spit to kill their predators because their jaw was too weak but theropods
were known for their sharp teeth and flexible jaw for eating their prey. The velociraptors were
portrayed as very viscous animals that were ready to attack. In the book it said they worked in
pacts and charged at very fast speeds, jumped and hissed. This kind of proves that dinosaurs aren t
so dumb after all because they were

Inhumane In Nazi Germany

job. At least they were lucky to be alive. These people will be scarred for the rest of their lives.
These memories will be burned into their brains forever. What these Jewswere put through is

They entered Auschwitz and there found hundreds of sick and exhausted prisoners. The Jews
that survive will have to live out the rest of their lives constantly thinking of what has happened

through in there troublesome past. They did nothing to deserve it, but dealt with it strongly and
struggled through it. They survived, and live today to tell the stories of it. Some Jews are very
successful as they live the lives of normal human beings. Like Martin Greenfield, an American

American Influence On Puritan Society
After the Protestant Reformation, a group practicing Puritanism left Great Britain to the
Netherlands for the ability to practice their religion freely. However, the Puritans did not favor the
idea of their children growing up outside of British influences despite having the privilege of
freedom of religion. In 1620, the first group of Puritan settlers sailed to North America aboard the
Mayflower. It wasn t until 1629 when John Winthrop delivered his city upon a hill sermon that
created a new perspective and goal for the growing Puritan society. Economic, political, and social
difficulties were faced, but religion stayed a constant center for the Puritan settlements. Both
failures and successes molded the Puritan settlement into what it was in the seventeenth century,
which leads into the influences left by the Puritans in today s society. Upon the ship Arabella, one
of nine ships that transferred Puritans to the New World, John Winthrop wrote his sermon titled A
Model of Christian Charity . He delivered this sermon to approximately nine hundred Puritans

Strict guidelines were placed to ensure order, the promise for each person reaching his or her own

man was able to vote as he had a church membership, which was rare to not have in the early years
of the Puritan settlement. All members had to attend town meetings regardless of his or her social
status. More often than not, Sunday morning sermons in cooperated town meetings as the entire
community was in attendance anyways. While Puritan leaders were able to keep the majority of the
population content, few were displeased with the ways of the Puritans. Roger Williams was exiled

Essay on Arguments Against Skepticism
If I tried to simply tell a skeptic, That rock will fall from the cliff because of gravity, he won t
believe me because he will simply say, Not necessarily. In fact, this can be the skeptic s answer to
just about any attempt to refute his position.
It has long been pointed out by opponents of skepticism that such an attitude cannot be taken to its
extreme conclusion in the real world in which we operate even skeptics must live their lives
according to rules they must rely upon not to fail. Skepticism (and all philosophy) cannot avoid the
cumbersome nature of human language and the simple fact that the only tool humans have to
investigate the nature of existence is the brain, which spawns coherent thoughts in a lingual form.

However, insofar as the skeptic poses the external question from the comfort of her armchair,
Carnap will reply that ``Unless and until they supply a clear cognitive interpretation, we are
justified in our suspicion that their question is a pseudo question, that is, one disguised in the form
of a theoretical question while in fact it is non theoretical В… ****
Calling philosophical propositions meaningless is usually very antagonistic; it amounts to using
fighting words. Some of the less thoughtful critics of Carnap see him as (solely) making this kind
of pejorative value judgment. Those who use ``positivist as a kind of academic curse word regard
Carnap as merely arguing that philosophers should find something more useful (and more
scientific!) to do than chasing their tails worrying about skepticism. This image of an antagonistic
stance is bolstered by Carnap s intimate involvement with the Vienna Circle who is known to have
gone through the Tractatus line by line declaring each proposition true, false, or meaningless. While
there are certainly overtones of this pejorative attitude, a moment s reflection on the text will show
how this is a completely wrongheaded interpretation of the claim that skepticism is a meaningless
doctrine.
For Carnap, a terms gets its meaning only in virtue of its role within a linguistic framework. ``If
someone wishes to speak in his language about a new kind of entities [sic], he has to introduce a

  • 2. Gender Roles in Great Expectations Essay Gender Roles in Great Expectations The importance of the Victorian ideal of motherhood is glimpsed in Charles Dickens s personal life. Dickens s main complaint against his wife when he separated from her was her terrible parenting. Around the time that his separation from his wife was being finalized, Dickens complains of Catherine in a letter to his friend Angela Burdett Coutts: She does not and never did care for the children; and the children do not and they never did care for her (qtd. in Slater 146). From evidence in other letters and the seeming abruptness with which Dickens took on this point of view, Dickens biographer Michael Slater suggests that this was something that Dickens had to get ... Similarly, Pip reports Mrs. Joe as having black hair and eyes (28; ch. 1).Pip infers his mother s appearance from her gravestone as well: from the turn of the inscription ... I drew a childish conclusion that my mother was freckled and sickly (23; ch. 1). Joe, although not freckled, has light skin with features far more feminine than Mrs. Joe s: Joe was a fair man, with curls of flaxen hair on each side of his smooth face, and with eyes of such a very undecided blue (28; ch. 1). Pip s physical description of all these parent figures reveals the ambivalent gender identities in the Gargery home. Joe s physical appearance seems more feminine, and he is much more nurturing than Mrs. Joe, who is described in terms similar to Pip s deceased father. Mrs. Joe is described in some masculine ways, but her behavior is the most significant indicator of her desire not to be trapped in the traditional feminine domestic role. Mrs. Joe s emotional distance from her family is exemplified in the apron that she wears: she almost always wore a coarse apron ... having a square impregnable bib in front, that was stuck full of pins and needles (28; ch. 2). Dickens use of the word impregnable evinces many non maternal associations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Popularity of John Constable s Paintings Dedhame... John Constable was a 19th century English Romantic painter. Constable is known best for his landscape paintings, he believed that his paintings should come right from nature instead of imagination. He made hundreds of outdoor oil sketches, he was said to be his happiest when painting places he knew well. His landscapes were usually of the area surrounding his home that he lived in while growing up. which is now locally referred as Constable Country . Constable was influenced by dutch artist, Jacob Van Ruisdael. John s most famous paintings were Dedhame Vale and The Hay Wain his realism and vitality make his works very original. John Constables paintings are now very popular in British art, however in his life time they were not very popular in England, he only found success in France. John had four very strong styles of painting which were usage of light, type of brushstroke, and composition. His usage of light really separated himself from other artist in history, he found a way to make his paintings look more realistic by adding red and green together in his trees for example. That specific color addition was never seen before him and really caught the eye of people in his time. He had a impressive natural brushstroke which in The Royal Academy wasn t very popular. Only later after his passing was his technique actually appreciated and became a normal use. Lastly his composition, he loved to paint exactly what he saw in front of him, he rarely used realism in his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Research Methodology In order to address the objectives set out in this research, a quantitative research approach has been employed and follows models developed by Tinbergen (1962), MacCullum (1995), Andrew (2002), and Augustin and Tawah (2012). The study is designed in such a way that it doesn t take the entire model developed by any one of these scholars, instead it adopts those variables which are appropraite to the situation under investigatation and adds some relevant explanatory variables. 3.1. Research Design In this study, 11 independent variables have been used to measure the pattern of the dependent variable. Dependent variable vary by the factors that influence them where as independent variables stand on their own changes in other variables in the model have no effect on them. An independent variable in one context may be a dependent variable in another. The dependent variable in this research is the average of bilateral trade and the research is designed to learn more about the determinants of the direction of trade in the EAC member states. GDP in both trading partners, distance between the centers in both the trading partners, number of people in both countries, membership in a preferential trade agreement, the existence of common border, language, having sea gate, colonial ties, and membership in the EAC regional integration are the independent variables. 3.2. These agreements were usually concluded on a bilateral level and defined the relationship between two states. The idea of an international community only appeared much later and its first indications can be traced back to the 17th century with the famous peace treatiesof Westphalia, when states stroke for a balance of power. However, only in the 19th century states began to develop international treaties in which general rules were laid out such as the Declaration of Paris regarding the freedom of the sea (1856) or the General Act of the Brussels Conference in 1890 that established an International Maritime... The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early Nineteen Thirties The late 1920s in America was a particularly tumultuous period of time for the country. The Wall Street Crash in 1929 had led to high levels of unemployment and dissatisfaction within the country. The Depression (1929 1934), which was a direct result of The Wall Street Crash, led to a breakdown of industry and commerce within the country and weakened its global position as a superpower. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this period the rise of urban gang rule and mobsters was unprecedented, mainly emerging from minority immigrant groups (Jewish/Italian/Irish). Initially the gangsters of the period were seen as high achievers as they were associated with the proletariat and seemed to be capable of rising above there roots, even during hard times in America, and achieve wealth. When considering the socio economic factors it is easy to understand why such men were considered as gangster heroes [3] who represented the people, however the only way that gangsters could achieve this wealth, subsequently fulfilling the American Dream, was by stealing it. Accruing capital meant accruing power over others [4]. Therefore it could be argued that the success gangsters exemplified was a perverse form of the American dream as it disregarded some of the key elements of the ideal. The fact that at this stage in America gangsters were the only group within society who could make upward mobility believable, tells much about how legitimate institutions had failed but that mobility was still at the core of what Americans held to be the American dream [5]. In the early 1930 s productions began within Hollywood of what were commonly described as social problem pictures [6], these films dealt specifically with the social difficulties of the period such as unemployment/labour struggles ( Black ... Concentration of media ownership threatens democracy in political journalism(Baker, 2007), leading to over representation of political viewpoints, values that are favoured by media owners. There is a negative correlation between media domination and levels of pluralism which is needed in society, to sustain representation. The concentration of media ownership leads to less competing suppliers, thus leaving a gap in a democratic political system. Due to Rupert Murdoch s large media empire, it has been said that he has wielded political power through his influence over headlines. Listed below are two of the many reasons to work with a probate lawyer. They Can Ensure That All Required Debts Are Paid Correctly The most important task that many probate lawyers can help you with is ensuring that all the required debts are paid correctly by the estate. For example, the probate lawyer can look at the various types of debts that were left behind by the estate and ensure that not only are the required debts paid but that they will be paid in the right order. This is important because there can be a number of fines and penalties that can be assessed if you paid the wrong debt before someone who held a higher priority debt or if you begin paying other debts before paying the estate taxes. However, determining who has priority over who when it comes to paying these debts can be extremely tricky as they can vary quite a bit depending on your area, so it is always best to consult with a probate lawyer to see what the laws in your particular area dictate. In 1886, the Egerton Commission was set up to view the educational provision of children who were deaf, blind or dumb. By 1888, the Egerton Commission had begun including the education of those from ‘exceptional circumstances’ who would appear to need ‘exceptional methods of educationâ€events which unfolded around this time had a large impact on how special needs was viewed and still affects special education needs provision now. In 1889 it was suggested that children who were considered to be feeble minded children were to continue to be educated within the mainstream system but within education classes and children considered to be educable imbeciles were to be educated in special institutions. These recommendations led to the opening of of special schools in the 1890s. In 1898, the government expressed a lack of defining criteria for these groups and therefore the difficulty in defining labels and correct education for children with special education needs. This led to the Departmental Committee on Defective and Epileptic Children to create the subgroup ‘the ability to earn a living’.Children who were considered as able to earn a living were children previously labeled as feeble minded whereas children who were imbeciles or idiots were considered as unable to earn a living. By 1913, the Board of Education’s Chief Medical Officer decided to group children into five categories: the mentally normal child, the dull or backward child, the feeble minded child, the imbecile child, the idiot. • 13. Slavery African American Slavery Slavery in North America became crucial for African Americans to secure their freedom. Since, many white indentured servants became unavailable, enslaved Africans had to replace them. Along their journey to obtain their freedom, the numbers of enslaved Africans started to drastically increase, and soon they started to develop their own culture. Slave labor throughout the Middle, Southern, and New England colonies differed as the thirteen coloniesshowed how enslaved Africans slowly became African Americans. For instance, enslaved Africans who arrived in the Chesapeake Bay area started to see how rough conditions were for them than anyone else. Many of the laws passed emphasized how harsh conditions were for enslaved Africans. Soon, Africans started to see how they were inferior to other races. A 1662 law made the enslaved status of black women heritable, decreeing that all children borne in this country shall be held bond or free only according to the condition of the mother. The status of the mother determined the status of the children. [Women] had no rights of any kind and no legal authority over anyone even their children who belonged to their owners. Even if enslaved women wanted to decide whether or not their child will be enslaved, the decision will already be made for them. Bissinger makes it clear that while Odessa is a unique place, the ideas he presents can be true almost anywhere: Odessa is the setting for this book, but it could be anyplace in this vast land where, on a Friday night, a set of spindly stadium lights rises to the heavens to so powerfully, and so briefly, ignite the darkness (XIV). Friday Night Lights, a book by H.G. Bissinger, is set in Odessa, a small town located in Texas, where football is revered by the entire town. Bissinger talks about the enormous effect of sports on American life and how it creates a sense of false hope (XII). Lewis H. Sports are a large part of America s culture as well as Odessa s. In Friday Night Lights, the players spend their entire lives training to be successful because sports are all they have to look forward to. During the final game of the season to make it to state, Ronnie Beavers told his team, This is the last minute of your life (326). Beavers quote shows the importance of the moment. If Permian does not win the game, they have nothing to look forward to in their future. This semi final game is much more than a game for Permian. What Beaver is saying is ridiculous, the Permian players act like Football will determine their future. By following the players and the town, Bissinger is able to show readers how important sports are in Odessa. Bissinger notes how it was obvious that the students of Permian hold the town on their shoulders (XIV). By following the story of the American small town, including many personal anecdotes, Bissinger shows the effect that sports have in Odessa. Friday Night Lights supports Lapham s claim that games represent much more than a game. It is not merely a game but a way of life. Permian players eat, breathe, and live football. Their lives are centralized around one thing: Football. Bissinger describes the town when he states, If you went to their homes, you might find black toilet seats, or black seat cushions, or black phone book covers, or black paper plates, or black clocks, or black felt on their pool tables (39). This brings into account the first aspect of the Broken B , religiousness and choice. For Kierkegaard and Judge William, the character and narrator of B , religiosity and ethical choice come hand in hand. Choose yourself! , as Mooney would claim the B would tell to the A , as A properly ethical self will ...develop the personal, the civic, the religious virtues, and his life proceeds through his constantly translating himself from one stage to the next . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By following this, then the B , as stated by Judge William ... is in effect assuming that authentic selfhood is possible only on ethical/religious terms. Choice and ethical are internally related. (Lillegard, 94). If these are true to the B , where the religiosity of the individual plays a part in their existence, and then added on top of that their ethics is connected to the religious as well, one ends up with the idea that ethical choice can be made only through these means. If that is the case for the B , then the knight will only continue to suffer. For the knight, who cannot escape the trap of brokenness he is sharing with the squire, this has profound implications. If the knight is constantly questioning his faith, he has come to a stalemate with his own thoughts, as he himself reflects in his confession ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today a lot of the things we talked about really hit home with me, and I actually cried in a room full of strangers as I told them my story and why I chose to be a leader. But today we talked about resilience. We defined resilience as: The process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress. This definition really spoke to me. I have been facing this day after day ever since April, and today we had a lady talk to us about it for 2 hours, but it felt like it was only seconds. To fold up into yourself is basically when you look at people and just say I can t with you right now. You hide away, turn off your phone, turn off all communication with the outside world, and basically just become one with your bed... and maybe a bag of taco bell. With my depression, I am guilty of this a lot. People try to talk to me and then I get in trouble because I get irritated that they won t just leave me alone with myself for a bit... That s often when I storm off. You just hit that point where you ve had enough and you just need to run away from all your responsibilities. This was comforting to hear from someone else, because I was starting to worry that maybe part of my three year old self had held onto parts of my brain. Next is to blame others. You don t want to accept that you have done wrong or that you have messed up, so you start putting the blame on other people. Next, you require total control. In a leadership role, sometimes you feel like you have lost control of a situation, so you try to regain control by taking all of it. You shut people out, and you tell them that you don t need their help. As a bit of a control freak, like I said, I am very guilty of this. Premarital Cohabitation And Subsequent Marriage Dissolution The purpose of this research is to establish if there is a positive or negative correlation between premarital cohabitation and subsequent marriage dissolution. An extensive literature review was conducted as means to find data from which a conclusion would be drawn. The literature review began with a quantitative study was analyzed for its use at being the most effective method for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on multiple subjects within one study. A qualitative study was also analyzed due to the fact that information regarding relationships is often classified as being unable to be generalizable due to the personal nature of relationships. Drawing a conclusion is heavily dependent on a meta analysis, which is why the last step in the data collecting process leaned toward analyzing a meta analysis. The most common conclusion in all of the studies indicated that premarital cohabitation has a negative effect on marital quality. Premarital cohabitation is a risk factor that can lead to a subsequent marital dissolution. Premarital Cohabitation: Does it Play A role in MarriageDissolution When a conversation about premarital cohabitation arises often times the opinions expressed will be mixed. Naylor s NigggerThe Meaning Of A Word In the essay, Niggger: The Meaning of a Word, Gloria Naylor demonstrates how a word can have a different meaning to different people depending on one s environment. In another article, The Word Police, Michiko Kakutani claims that the language that the people use is unreasonable because of understatement. Both articles illustrate language complexity. However, Naylor uses her personal examples to argue against a suppression of politically incorrect language in a calm and conversational tones while Kakutani uses reliable resources to criticize a politically correct movement in a sarcastic tone. Although both authors deal with the similar subject in their own unique way, Naylor s essay is better than Kakutani s because Naylor explains her views more clearly. The first reason why Naylor s essay is better than Kakutani s is because of her attitude toward her topic. Naylor illustrates her point in a calm and conversational tone to clarify that the word can have a different meaning due to who use it and how. Her calm tone makes readers know that she is trying to make a reasonable argument. As is seen in the fourth paragraph when she states, And what exactly did [n word] mean? (323), the author can make simple statements and proceed to support how the word is said differently. Naylor is wiling to share her experiences with her audiences rather than blaming anyone for hearing the n word . We may conclude with Descartes that thought is necessary to having a mind, and materiality is necessary to having a body, it does not inevitably follow that there is an entity whose sole nature is to think. Descartes is limited by his subjective viewpoint that it could not be the case that extension could be another property of mind. He needs to prove the stronger argument that it is not possible for the mind to have extension as one of it s properties. Descartes tries to make this proof in his Divisibility Argument: Similar to this is the Argument from Distinctness which argues for the logical possibility of separating mind from body. To do this, mind and body would have to be distinct and thus it would prove both things. I can imagine myself as a thinking thing existing apart from the body (as shown by the different essences in the argument from essence.). The Middle Ages began as a result from the collapse of the Roman Empire which began in 31 BCE, and fell in 476 C.E. In around 300 C.E. the emperor of the Rome divided the land for easier control. This began the decline of Rome. The Western half of Rome fell to Barbarian invaders, while the eastern half lived on as the Byzantine Empire. The Early Middle Agesbegan shortly after the western half fell. After the Roman Empire lost its position as the center of power, Western Europe fell into a time of chaos and warfare. She would come to develop her unique existentialist perspective through one of the most decisive periods in our world s history and through close personal contact with some tremendously insightful intellectuals formed in the same crucible. The idealistic notion of individual freedom and the societal unity that was presented through the propaganda of the time inspired Simone s socialist world view and liberal perspective throughout her youth. Socialism would remain the basis of her world view for the rest of her life although she would later come to the realization that true Socialism had not been established anywhere in the world and in sovereignties that claimed to be Socialist, the plight of women s and human rights remained dire. Yet history implies that she held true to the notion that somehow a pure Socialist governance was a noble and viable system within which individuals could realize their individual freedom and flourish in the pursuit of collective success of the community. We cannot fault her for her romantic notions of an idealistic society. Ms. Beauvoir did not have the luxury of historical hind sight to help shape her perspective on Socialism. This however is teachable moment were the students have a opportunity to talk about the racial history, the teachers should be able to guide the conversation better (Beck). Essay Role of Women in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit Role of Women in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit In the novel Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, by Jeanette Winterson, most of the important, decision making, characters are female. Jeanette, the female protagonist, is greatly influenced by her mother, a strong, overbearing, eccentric woman, and by Elsie, a prominent member of the family parish who becomes Jeanette s only friend and closest confidant. Elsie and Jeanette s mother act as polar forces in Jeanette s life, with the mother encouraging suppression of unholy or unnatural feelings and thoughts, and Elsie encouraging expression of feelings and accepting oneself for who one really is. However, at the same time as Mother s natural interest peeked through, she suppressed them by condemning Next Door s behavior. Throughout the book, many attempts are made by Jeanette s mother to make Jeanette suppress her feelings and sexual orientation. When Mother finds out that Jeanette is a lesbian, she kicks her out of the house, saying, You ll have to leave, I m not havin demons here. (Page 136). That incident, however, happens only after Mother and the Pastor try many times to make Jeanette repent and renounce her sexual feelings toward women, including trying to make her feel guilty and shameful, sending away her sexual partners, and locking her in a room for thirty six without food or light. Elsie, on the other hand, offers a different approach to life, and serves as a counterexample to Mother s repressive influences. Elsie is a member of the church who befriends Jeanette and understands her problems, and is one of the only people with whom Jeanette feels open and comfortable. The manner in which Elsie encourages Jeanette to express herself can be seen when the young protagonist skillfully crafts a sampler which her teachers criticize sharply for it s text, which reads the summer is ended and we are not yet saved. • 36. Correlation Between Income And Infant Mortality Evidence has persisted through the last century that people struggling under the pressures of poverty often experience inferior lifestyles compared to those with higher incomes, however it is less apparent to what degree income can truly affect the overall health and well being of different social classes. People with higher incometypically have better access to healthcare, education, freedom and equality and in turn will on average have greater overall health, better occupations amongst many other benefits but it is difficult to accurately establish to what extent these additional endowments actually contribute to the well being and early health of their infants. And if there is indeed a connection between income and infantmortality or birth weight, what other conditions must be held constant or controlled in order for these connections to be statistically significant? Schady Smitz (2009) took the direction of studying middle income country with specified regularity and extremity in economic shocks to the system and then attempting to establish a connection with said shocks to the infant mortality rates. They gathered relevant statistics from countries with over ten years of infant mortality data and have at least two years of significant negative economic growth. The affluent Manhattan he encounters reflects the post war scene, with New York the unquestionable center of finance and trade. At night, the city s music clubs and bars are packed with people: New Yorkers, visitors, college kids, etc. By day, Holden takes us to some of city s most famous landmarks. Grand Central Station is the largest train station in the world (by number of platforms: 67). Although slated for improvement in the 1960s, Grand Central was saved and has recently been renovated into a hub for fine dining and expensive shopping. Critical Analysis Of Madame Bovary Allison Witt September 28, 2017 Literature Core Professor O Har A Fantasy World In Madame Bovary, Gustave Flaubert shapes Emma, the protagonist, into a woman who deceives herself, through romantic novels, into believing her life is better than it actually is. Emma like most things in her life romanticized what marriage would do for her. At the start of her marriage to Charles, she believed marriage would be the means at which she transitioned from a farm girl to a wealthy woman. Therefore, her only connection to the upper class at the ball are her clothes. Also, Flaubert further separates Emma and Charles from the rest of the guest, by having them arrive in a dog cart (Flaubert, 41). Hence, Flaubert advocates that no matter how much the middle class aspires to be a part of the upper class through material items they will never have the means to do so. Flaubert further emphasizes the separation between Emma and the rest of the guests when he writes: Emma was listening to a conversation full of words she did not understand (Flaubert, 45). Flaubert is highlighting how out of place Emma is, yet how aloof Emma remains. She is still listening even though she doesn t understand what they are saying. Overall, Flaubert utilizes perspective in order to highlight Emma s aspirations to be a part of the upper class, through her appearance and material items.
