Separation of Powers is a system in which power is divided between three
branches of government. These branches consist of Legislative (Congress),
Executive (President), and Judiciary (Supreme Court). Each one of the branches is
given a duty to fulfill. If one branch doesn t fulfill its duties, the other branches can
force that branch to fulfill it. There is another system that helps these branches of
government to check on each other and limit each other s powers. It is called
Checks and Balances. It helps each branch to limit the power of the other. Each
branch has specific duties. The Legislative branch is made to create or repeal laws.
The Executive branch executes and enforces the law and the Judiciary branch
interprets the laws. The Separation of Powers prevents the power going to one
branch. The system prevents the abuse of the power given to each of the branches.
The system was used to limit the power of one branch for a reason, now it is used to
make obstacles for bills that will help the citizens of this country.
The Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances can be seen in action, when a

arriving at the museum we rode on a six minute tram ride. The tram ride was
included in the price of parking. Walking up to the museum s entrance was an
experience of its own. The architecture was entertaining. There were several areas
that grabbed the viewers attention. After speaking to a museum employee, I was
able to notice different areas with in the museum. The architect used large pooped
out stones to grab the viewers attention. These pooped out stones provide a path to
view points with in the museum. For example; one pooped out stone showed a
view of the Central Garden, another lead us to a view of Los Angeles. The views
were beautiful from the guided points. The museum was broke up into different
pavilions. Each pavilion had a different theme, it was very easy to locate each
pavilion and artwork within the building. One pavilion had a Changing Exhibition.
While visiting the theme of the West Pavilion was The Lure of Italy: Artist Views.
I soon realized all areas of the museum change to help protect the art on display.
Areas of the Getty Museum included several painting galleries, sculpture, decorative
art galleries, architecture, gardens and of course the changing exhibits. While
walking through the buildings it was fascinating to see all the different styles of art
on display. Artists all have their own techniques when creating their expression of
what they see. Many paintings dated back to the 1700 s and seemed to have very
little cracks or signs of age within the paintings. While experiencing the painting
galleries, I was hopeful to find a painting by both Vincent van Goghand Claude
Monet. To my surprise the museum had one piece by

INTRODUCTION
I selected to watch Pollan s series documentary instead of his book due to my
difficulties in reading and being a visual learner. I am grateful to Pollen for being
able to see his story as the documentary. This allowed a visual and hearing
experience with the professionals he spoke with within their environment along with
demonstrations of what they were talking about. It was an experience to join the
people from the countries he visited in their homes/work and to learn what he was
taught. This video brings more meaning and life into his story than just words on a
page.

Michael Pollan is an American author, journalist, activist, and professor of
journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. For the last 25 years
he has written about nature and culture and their intersection in what we put on our
plates, what is in our farms/gardens and in the environment we have built. In 2010,

the person seeking the change thought that it would provide, leading to frustration
and discontentment. Everyone dreams of changing aspects of their life, its human
nature to think If I was just more attractive , If my child just wasn t handicapped ,

out in the book The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, is that

novel Mrs. Dalloway, the story is being told through the perspective of multiple
characters. While each part seems to have a connection with one another, each part
affects the overall story. For example, when Mrs. Dalloway sees Septimus for the
first and only time, it allows the reader to connect Septimus s mindset with Mrs.

different classes in society, their struggles can be viewed as a parallel, meaning that

There are many areas in Tampa that will be unfortunately underwater. As we saw with
the heavy rains in late 2015, the most vital areas such as Westshore Ave, South
Tampa, Bayshore Ave, and even Downtown had major flooding causing delays in
traffic and safety anxieties. While the flooding only lasted a few days, the event
brought attention to the Tampas faulty infrastructure and drainage systems. An
alarming thought is how Tampa will be able to protect itself from a storm or the
rising sea levels if the drainage systems are inadequate. The Tampa Bay area is due
for a natural disaster any day now; the coastal area is highly vulnerable. According
to Sara Kerr, One place that we have to look carefully at is Tampa where there is a
huge concentration at risk from a storm surge, but there hasn t been an event for
150 years and so the city is fairly complacent about its risk (2015). A possible
catastrophe can pose as an environmental challenge in Tampa Bay as the highly
populous areas will not be able to withstand rising sea levels that will occur.
The location of the main general hospital in the city was clearly not chosen with
sustainability in mind. Tampa General Hospital, one of the highest rated hospitals in
Florida, is located on low lying Davis Island connected to Downtown Tampa by two
narrow bridges. When the city experiences tropical storms, this area is susceptible to
