The Possibilities of Technological Influences on Evolution
Introduction In humanity, as in all of life, the most successful traits in producing offspring will also
become the most prevalent. There is a belief that because we no longer fight for our survival, we will
no longer evolve. Evolution, however, has no goal or foresight. Though we have seized the need to
fight, and have triumphed to the top of the animal food chain, we continue to change and develop by
whatever is most successful for production. This could be beneficial, but could also have detrimental
effects. This paper will discuss these positive and negative possibilities, as well as how technology
could greatly alter our evolutionary path.
The Ideal of the Body
The initial future envisioned by the author was admittedly an ideal one. It s easy to imagine that
without limit to food and shelter that would otherwise inhibit our potential, we may become taller.
History shows that this has long been the trend and humanity could perhaps come to a 6 5 average, or
even higher, but at this point much taller mates would likely cease to be attractive as we would be
reaching our peak of structural stability. Humans much taller than this would be over encumbered by
their own density, and have inhibited walking capabilities (Fowler, 2006). Because of this, the author
predicted the possibility of an increasingly uniform height, as both very tall and shorter members of
society are selected against. Large amounts of body hair also tend to be chosen against and humans
would likely

Security Protecting Their Information Technology And The...
Unit 13 P1:
Security:
Security protects organisation or properties from an individual without authorisation. Security protects
your computer from assault, theft and fraud etc. In business there needs to be a document stating how
the company can protect their information technology and the company s material. This all needs to be
written down. The company s security policy is always updated because of the employee and
technology. There are many security threats on the internet, here are a few of them:
Identity theft:
Identity theft is when a criminal gets hold of your personal information. For example bank account
details.
Virus:
Virus is a code that attacks the network system and computer. This happens because the data files are
contaminated and this is done on a system through the internet or disk. The virus tries to hid it self and
send it self to others. The virus is harmful to your computer.
Trojan:
Trojan is a virus that makes the user believe that it is good for their computer and this virus is hard to
remove this treat.
Trend analysis:
Trend analysis predicts the potential movements of a stock that is based on past data. There are
different types of charts that you can create. For instances you can make a chart Traders get an idea of
what might happen in the future, they get this idea from what has happened before in the past. The
three types of trends are long, short, and intermediate term. Trend analysis is good because it does not
go against them but rather it

American Transcendentalist Writers Essay
Following the influx of the puritanical style of writing in America during the 17th Century by the
Founding Fathers, it could be said that what we now know as the collective `American writing was
once created almost as an effort to distance its own style from that of other European styles.
Perhaps not being incredibly popular outside their own circle of influence, writers such as Ralph
Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalists began, in the 19th Century, to weave a new form of
writing using philosophy as the `vehicle of thought . While this allowed them to explore new and
untouched areas in the mind, it also greatly influenced many later writers from Henry Thoreau to the
more `popular and recent Mark Twain.
Let us begin with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although some critics may treat Walden as simply a text on the love of nature, Thoreau s message,
and indeed philosophy, seems to lay deeper. Although he never openly criticises the state of America,
there are certainly references to suggest that this text is somewhat a social commentary or criticism of
the society in which he lived. For example he suggests `Better if [men] had been born in the open
pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have clearer eyes what field they were called to labour
in . Through this extract, and indeed through much of the text, we can see that Thoreau uses the image
of nature to suggest his own ideal of society. It seems that by isolating himself from civilisation, he
begins to understand himself through self realisation and thus establishes his own identity. From the
question, `Why should they begin digging their own graves as soon as they are born? , we learn a little
of Thoreau s philosophy on life: he disagrees with the collective identity of the increasingly capitalist
America in which he lives, asking why should we passively comply with a capitalist machine?
Similar to the way in which Thoreau isolated himself from civilisation, poet Emily Dickinson also
attempted to question the values of this new society in which she lived, except this time from within
the seclusion of her own home in Massachusetts.
Clearly Dickinson s poetry was far from anything the American public had

The Makropulos Case Analysis
Bernard William s The Makropulos Case focuses on the topic of immortality, and the issues that
would arise from being immortal. William s uses the concept of the Makropulos play to refute the idea
of immortality, because the protagonist kills themselves out of unbearable boredom from exhausting
their categorical desires. Whereas John Martin Fischer rejects William s view of immortality, due to
the limiting constraints of his argument. Fischer asserts the immortal life would be livable, because it
reflects a mortal life. In effect, I will further Fischer s argument, in proposing the concept of
categorical desires evolving, and then the significance of external factors occurring in society.
Therefore, this essay will explain the significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, William s asserts the immortal life would be undesirable, or unlivable since we will
inevitably exhaust our categorical desires (100).
Whereas, Fischer denies William s dilemma, because his argument is too narrow in thinking, because
William asserts the agent would possess only one categorical desire. However, Fischer denies William
s assertion, because the immortal agent would not be pursuing only one interest. Fischer questions
William s mode of reasoning on why the agent must pursue only one interest; Fischer proposes that
the individual would possess a package of categorical desires, which would enable the agent to move
in to their immortal future without succumbing to eternal boredom. Certainly, an immortal life could
consist in a certain mix of activities, possibly including friendship, love, family, intellectual, artistic
and athletic activity, sensual delights, and so forth (216). Rather relentlessly pursuing one good, the
packages of categorical desires enable the agent to move between pleasures and keep themselves busy.
Furthermore, Fischer rejects William s assertion that the immortal agent cannot undergo any form of
boredom, and that they must constantly be absorbed in their environment. Fischer asserts all mortal
lives consists of temporary moments of boredom/pains, which enable the agent to proceed to mentally
stimulating environment/goods (261). Furthermore, the possible issue that the agent would have a

Privileged Insights Of The Mind By Derek Steen Essay
The primary case in the video, Privileged insights of the Mind is the situation of Derek Steen. Derek
feels torment in his cut away left arm which is likewise alluded to as Phantom Limb Syndrome. Steen
does not feel the torment constantly. He clarifies that after he got his surgery despite everything he had
the inclination that his arm was still joined to his body. Be that as it may, the agony came when he
contemplated his arm, the more he pondered it the more torment he encountered and the other way
around. Furthermore, Steen says when he initially began shaving subsequent to turning into an
amputee, he would encounter torment and a shivering sensation in his removed hand when the left
side (the side where his arm is cut away) of his face was being shaved. For Steen his issue lies in the
somatosensory cortex. Meaning the left half of his body (the skin) is controlled by the right half of his
mind along a vertical piece of cortex. The severed left arm of Steen s does not get any contribution
from the mind, in this manner making the cut away hand ache for another tactile information. The face
has tangible signs that exclusive initiate the region of the face that is nearest to the hand that is cut
away. For Steen s situation, the tactile signs assault the region that compares to the missing hand and
the hand locale of the mind begins getting to be actuated. Along these lines, the district of the mind
that is perusing those signs misinterprets the signs, it translates the

Commo Corruption In Robert Bolt s A Man For All Seasons
A Man for All Seasons asks the audience a crucial question; would a man sacrifice his beliefs for
power and control? Plagued with themes of supremacy and control, Robert Bolt s A Man for All
Seasons features the protagonist Thomas More who is fiercely truthful and honest. Thomas More is
foregrounded within the play to highlight the themes of power, control and ultimately corruption
amongst the monarchy. The play, A Man for all Seasons, provides the audience with a deeper and
more accurate portray of Sir Thomas More in comparison to the film, giving the audience a more
enriched story of the overarching theme. Represented in two different forms, the story is given more
depth and justice in the play, unpacking the different themes of the Common Man, water and
corruption.
In both the film and the play, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Underpinning the entirety of A Man For All Seasons, the corruption of individuals and of the
monarchy system is an issue which is brought to the forefront of the audience s mind. The audience is
consistently asked to question the strength of man to repeal the corruption of power and control, and
how people themselves can be so easily corrupted. Once again, the play represents this well, using the
Gilded Cup to clearly symbolize the corruption in the monarchy which then started the catalyst of the
play. In contrast to the play, the film marginalizes this important scene, limiting the audience s
opportunity to delve deeply into the meaning of the Gilded Cup. In addition to this, A Man For All
Seasons focuses on the rise of Richard Rich and the fall of Sir Thomas More. More stays strong to his
morals, resisting pressure of the monarchy. Juxtaposed with More, Richard acquires more wealth and
greater status by marginalizing his moral principles. This is an example of how one man concedes to
corruption while the other one remains strong to his

Analytical Analysis Of Wes Anderson s Moonrise Kingdom
Analytical Paper on Moonrise Kingdom From the moment you turn on a Wes Anderson movie, you
can easily recognize it s his due to the unique style. Moonrise Kingdom is one of his most popular and
stylized films to date. One scene in particular I want to look into is the scene when Scout Master Ward
and the other scouts are introduced. (5:31 8:39) This scene is important to setting up the rest of the
movie. It introduces us to the antagonists for the first part of the film as well as showing that Sam ran
away from the camp. The opening shot to the scene tells you everything about the location. The
wooden sign lets you know right away that they re in a boy scout camp, while the sign also works as a
frame around the tents in the background. (5:31 5:42) Then it cuts to Scout Master Ward exiting a tent
and going about his daily business. From the moment his character is introduced, you can tell that he s
in a position of power. (5:42 5:55) This claim is further supported when all the characters are sitting at
the breakfast table, and Scout Master Ward sits in the middle. (7:43 7:53) Most films may have Scout
Master Ward sitting at the head of the table, however with the way this scene is shot, it makes sense
that he be in the exact middle to show his power dynamic.
All the colors in the scene have an earthy tone, meaning there is a lot of browns, dark greens and
yellows. This works because they re supposed to be at a boy scout camp, and are learning to be
experts in the

Recession Turmoil Caused By U.s. Subprime Mortgage Crisis
Wall Street turmoil caused by U.S. Subprime Mortgage Crisis had eventually evolved to global
financial crisis. The financial crisis that has engulfed the world is really a disaster, leading to
precipitous shrinkage of human wealth and instantaneous evaporation of long time efforts by financial
institutions. But why did such financial crisis take place? Who should be blamed?
As far as I concern, Federal Reserve deserves the greatest blame, as its ultra loose monetary policy
created housing bubble, sowing the seeds of crisis. And its subsequent tighten policy pricked that kind
of bubble, precipitatingsubprime mortgage crisis. Together with the former Fed chairman Alan
Greenspan indulged rampant financial derivatives, which made the economy worse off.
From 2001, Federal Reserve began to cut interest rates, and after cutting for 13 times, by june.2003, it
reduced target rate to 1% which hit the lowest level in the past 46 years. Due to such loose monetary
policy, lending rates declined at the same time, 30 year fixed mortgage rates dropped from 8.1%in
2000 to 5.8% in 2003. In this case, Americans house purchasing enthusiasm rose dramatically. And
speculating on real estate appeared. However bubble would burst eventually. From june.2005, Federal
Reserve began to reserve its low interest rate policy, and raised its interest rates for 13 times, so by
august.2006, Fed target rate was increased from 1% to 5.25%. The interest rates were put up
continuously, which increased borrowing

Understanding Vs. Knowing in Atwood’s Oryx and Crake Essay
It is often simpler to settle for an understanding of the world and people around us instead of trying to
know the truth. Truth has consequences; by knowing too much, one can lose a friend, learn a deadly
secret, or become someone they do not want to be. To express his understanding of himself and the
world around him, Crake in Oryx and Crake uses quote bearing fridge magnets. One very important
quote is We understand more than we know . It is important to recognize the difference between the
terms understand and know ; the Oxford English Dictionary defines to understand as to perceive the
significance, explanation, or cause of, whereas to know is to be absolutely certain or sure about
something. There is certainly a difference, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there are many characteristics that remain uncontrolled in the Crakers, and these people
eventually begin to create art and place both Oryx and Crake in God like positions in their society:
two things against which Crake had warned. Crake s understanding of biology and psychology leads
the Crakers to initially have none of humanity s flaws. This shows Crake s grand understanding of
biology, but not any knowledge of how these people will soon acquire notions of art, gods, or
symbolism. He has done few trials, and consequently has little evidence to prove that the Children of
Crake will be successful.
Furthermore, Crake is able to understand Jimmy s incredible attraction to Oryx from the first time they
glimpse her on the HottTotts website. He saves her image, possibly with the intentions of one day
finding this girl to use against Jimmy. What Crake understands is Jimmy s love for Oryx, but what he
doesn t know is that Jimmy will choose in the end to not let him and Oryx re enter the Paradice Dome.
Jimmy accepts that for complete renewal of the human race, not only Crake, but Oryx as well, must
die, for both have sinned against the potential goodness of humanity and she is a hinge in Crake s
attempt to re enter Paradice (DiMarco 191). Whereas Jimmy had been known to Crake to be one to be
fearful and easily controlled, this time he takes a powerful stance against Crake s plan and proves that

Within any company, managers must be reminded that the focus of a layoff is not on the actual
individual being released, but rather on the position itself. The layoff decision is made based on the
needs of the company and the position. If the individual is not fulfilling the position or if the position
is no longer necessary, the company must make the decision to let the person go. With this
perspective, managers can prevent as many negative emotions as possible and it will additionally
affect the communication between the manager and employee being laid off. When the employee is
reminded of the true purpose of the decision, they will accept the decision more easily than if he or

Oct 31 | $3000 |

Included in the benefits package offered to the employee is the option for the single lump sum, which
pays the employee the full amount of their layoff benefits in one lump sum. However, it would not
include any relevant cost of living adjustments. The employee would receive it within 30 days of
being laid off.
Three Ways the Layoff May Affect the Company
Even if a layoff is completed successfully and with little resistance, there are possible negative effects
in which the decision can have on the company. These include:
* Decrease trust among valuable employees
* Hidden costs, such as severance packages, may cause the layoff to be ineffective
* Workplace morale may decrease
Companies are oftentimes hasty to undergo layoffs as they feel they are eliminating their ineffective
employees and building an environment full of strong and effective employees. However, this does
not guarantee that the valuable employees will remain loyal to the company and it is important that
managers do not depend too much on these employees. Layoffs can also decrease trust among the
valuable employees as they may worry that they too could be

Education for Sustainable Development Essay
Sustainability development has three components: environment, society, and economy. If you consider
the three to be overlapping circles of the same size, the area of overlap in the center is human well
being. As the environment, society, and economy become more aligned, the area of overlap increases,
and so does human well being. Therefore, education for sustainable development (ESD) is the use of
education as a tool to achieve sustainability. Simply put, ESD is a way to make the world a safer,
healthier, and more livable place for us and future generations (McKeown, 2002, pgs 7 9).

Since students in grades 3 through 5 typically learn better by incorporating all three learning styles
(visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) into their daily classroom work, instructors for these grades may
find it easier to create and design lesson plans. Including sustainable development on a basic level into
the curriculum at this age is generally not difficult because science and reading classes have usually
touched on the subject of recycling or the environment. A simple, low cost activity would be for
students to make reminder plates for light switches and thermostats in their homes or schools (see
Appendices A and B). This lesson allows students to be creative in designing the reminder plates and
it allows them to teach their families and friends about conserving energy. Another easy, low cost
activity that can actually be done in all grades is creating bird feeders from milk cartons (see Appendix
C). This lesson teaches students how to take already developed materials and reuse them to create
something new. Students can also learn about how solar energy supplies more than just sunlight and
heat to our planet by making solar sweet tea right in the classroom (see Appendix D). This lesson calls
on students observation abilities and allows them to express their findings in their own words. The

Groundbreaking Piece in the New York Magazine of 1915...
In February 1915, the New York magazine, The Smart Set: A Magazine of Cleverness, featured a piece
called, The Flapper. This was the first time a magazine had ever shown the rebellious young girl who
wore short dresses and skirts in the 1920 s. The magazine described the flapper as A charming
creature! (The Smart Set : A Magazine of Cleverness) and continued to boast the reputation of the
flapper by portraying her as educated and mysterious. The magazine Vanity Fair soon followed in
September of 1921, but this magazine demolished the reputation of the flapper girl. Why aren t they at
home? (Panzini The Flapper a New Type: September 1921) the magazine and the majority of people
asked. The article then described how the image of the flapper girl is distinguishing a mother from her
daughter by the way they acted and dressed.
The image of a flapper girl was not just in the United States, for Germany and France had the flapper
girl as an icon. The term for flapper girl in Germany is, der Backfish, and in French it is l IngΓ©nue.
(The Smart Set : A Magazine of Cleverness) Before the flapper girl, there was the era of Victorian
fashion, the role of women before World War One, and the role of women during World War One. Post
World War One, the focus on the image of women in society skyrocketed through every day flapper
girls and through publicized flapper girls such as famous actresses Clara Bow and Louise Brooks. In

a human s actions, thoughts, and even perspective on numerous topics. Different social factors come
together from almost every portion of life, to create one s happiness ranking. A strategy like this can
be used by a single person, but it also has the ability to be used to analyze a certain place or country.
One country that s currently dealing with a significant amount of issues, is Lebanon. Many of the
social factors looked at as a source of happiness, are either missing or being threatened by radical
groups within the country. War over territory on the southern border has been a consistent problem
within the country for decades, leading to a significant amount of destruction and tension between the
Lebanese and their neighbors. Not to mention, many major cities like Beirut have been plagued by the
country s inability to properly remove waste and control the homeless population. Maybe the biggest
uproar taking place in Lebanon right now, is the youth unhappiness with religion and the impact it has
on society. On the other hand, the positives are not exactly where they should be. Lebanon has been
fortunate to have fertile land and great tourist destinations. On top of that, the country is still working
towards creating an equal playing field for both men and women. It has been a rather slow process,
but changes are coming. Even some of the industries within the country

Compare And Contrast Anime And Anime
In recent years, animated programs have dominated the world of film and TV in both America and
Japan. These programs, known as cartoons and anime, are some of the most popular forms of
entertainment today. Anime and cartoon shows, such as One Piece and Family Guy, have been running
for decades and are very well known among society. Animated films such as Disney s The Lion King
and Studio Ghibli s Spirited Away have also thrived and even surpassed animated television shows in
some instances. Both American and Japanese animation industries have flourished, and their cartoons
and animes continue to grow in popularity. However, similarities and differences between the two
soon arise when compared closely; these observations are often what lead fans to prefer one style over
the other as well as shape pop culture. Anime and cartoons had very similar origins. Gertie the
Dinosaur from 1914 is considered the first American cartoon. Japan s first anime is not as clear, but
many believe it to be 1917 s An Obtuse Sword. Both of these animated features were short, silent, and
black and white. Their rise in popularity and introduction of the style of animation seen in the modern
world did not begin until their Golden Age of animation. In the US, the Golden Age was from the
1920 s to 1960 s; this was when Walt Disney created his own animation studio and began to put out
longer cartoons with sound and color. Snow White from the late 30 s was Disney s first big feature
film hit. In the

Walls Are No Longer Where They Please Because Of A Wall
Freedom is the victor. But how can there be freedom if man cannot travel where they please because
of a wall? I believe walls have many adverse effects on people, countries, and civilizations, and I
believe a poem from Robert Frost and a speech from Ronald Reagan help prove that point.
Both Frost and Reagan discuss the lack of benefits walls have for people. In Frost s poem, the narrator
states that We wear our fingers rough with handling them. This shows that the upkeep of the wall
causes the narrator and neighbor physical harm, when they are gaining nothing in return for keeping
the wall. In Reagan s speech, he is addressing the East and he states I join you, as I join your fellow
countrymen in the West, disclosing that the people of Berlin should be together when they are
separated. I believe Reagan is also trying to touch on how the people of Berlin are separated from their
family and friends if they are unlucky enough to be on opposite sides of the wall, and that there is no
way for those people to reach their family and friends because they would be killed if they tried to get
over the wall without permission. Reagan also discusses how walls affect countries in his speech. ...

resources that may be available on one side of Germany won t be able to get to the other side. It would
also affect Germany on the world stage since it has divided its people it wouldn t have as much power

Disadvantages Of Software Development Methodology
The methodology is actually defines the workflows, processes and responsibilities which are
necessary for project s aims and goals. So, we can say that software development methodology is a set
of best practice to control the complete software development process. The development process of

phases which are named as: 1 Analysis 2 Coding or Development 3 Testing or Validation 4

Psychology, Theology and Spirituality: Interdisciplinary Approach to Christian Counseling
Summary
McMinn (2011) uses this book to bring out the importance of the use of spirituality (as related to
Christian faith) in psychological counseling. He describes the Christian Counselors as people who are
highly trained in counseling theory and techniques, in theology, and are personally disciplined to

(NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with

Twilight Is Not Good For Maidens Essay
Motherhood and adulthood become some of the potential themes as the series progresses, this can be
unsettling as Bella is barely out of high school. A young girl defining her identity is an obstacle on its
own, but adding in complex aspects of adulthood can make it worse. Another unsettling, yet
unsurprising aspect of Twilight, pertains to the overwhelming need Bella seems to have to grow up too
fast. It can be assumed that the author placed this element into the text because her target audience
could relate to the feeling. Often times, rushing to participate in adult lifestyles such as sex, marriage
or motherhood, means losing part of one s individuality. The central idea of feminism is to be
recognized as an individual, independent and equal of a man. ... Show more content on

Bella s extreme desire to get married to Edward, have sex, and become a mother stem from the lack of

How Outside Stimuli Are Affected By The 5 Senses
How Outside Stimuli are affected by the Five SensesAP1 ProjectShelby HardenSo, many things use
the 5 senses. Each sense controls something different. Without having one of the five senses, can turn
your whole life around. Treasure them all. Each function provokes every step you take in life. Outside
stimuli can be received by the five senses which are sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. Sight is very
important to everyday life. Light waves off an object is what lets us see. The brain connects the light
wave to memories or what it might be associated with, which then allows us to precept what the object
is. This process happens so fast, you never see it coming. The stimuli you get from seeing is the colors

We hear by sound waves. The ear collects these waves and send signals to the brain for us to interpret.
Talking, beeping of a horn, crying, and so much more are stimuli of sound. Sound helps signal what
we tend on doing next. Touching is something everyone likes to do, no matter what age you are. There
are specialized receptors in the three major tissue layers. These receptors then send signals to the
brain. This process then allows us to feel pain, vibration, itching, and even a tickle. All those feelings
enhance stimuli. Smell can drive a person in so many different directions. Hair in the top of the nasal
cavity have receptors. When you inhale or sniff, the chemicals in the air bind to these receptors that
send signals to the brain. These signals transfer to us thinking if something smells good

Money for Money s Sake in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott...
I think one of the most pervasive evils in this world is greed and acquiring money for money s sake.
Once you have six houses and a plane, it s just about a number. It s never been anything I understood.
This is a quote by Kevin Bacon, a very awesome and apparently worldly actor, and it perfectly
captures the essence of the theme that I have come to for The Great Gatsby. The theme I see most
strongly reflected in the book is this: Although greed and lust are human nature, they are often used as
a substitute for happiness, but almost always lead to decay. I will provide examples of this theme by
looking into events and the behavior of characters throughout the plot of the book.
One main event in the book that I believe strongly represents the theme is when Gatsby is shot while
floating in the pool that he had one of the people working for him wait to drain even though it was the
beginning of the fall season (p.161). I see this as a strong reflection of the theme starting with the
symbolism of the pool (which is apart of a long chain of symbols).
I m going to drain the pool to day, Mr. Gatsby. Leaves ll start falling pretty soon, and then there s
always trouble with the pipes.
Don t do it to day, Gatsby answered. He turned to me apologetically. You know, old sport, I ve never
used that pool all summer? (p.161)
I see the pool as representative of being full of Gatsby s thoughts and love for Daisy and that he is not
ready to drain it yet, and wants to float on what s

Essay on President Woodrow Wilson
President Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson was the first Southerner to be elected president after the Civil War. Born on
December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Va., he was the son of a Presbyterian minister who supported the
Confederates. Wilson assumed the presidency after a whirlwind career as a college professor,
university president and New Jersey governor. However, Wilson left the Oval Office just as
heartbroken as the Confederate soldiers that returned home when he was a boy.
Woodrow Wilson was born as Thomas Woodrow Wilson the son of Janet Woodrow and Joseph

However, he ultimately intended to serve the public and wondered about becoming a politician. He
continued writing and speaking while at Virginia, where he was labeled a man of courage for publicly
speaking against the Confederate cause before a crowd of Southerners. Wilson finished his law studies
at home and opened an office in Atlanta in 1882 with a fellow University of Virginia alumnus. But the
law bored Wilson, who decided in 1883 that he would become a writer and teacher. Appropriately,
Wilson signed up for graduate courses at Johns Hopkins University in Columbia, S.C., a new school

At the behest of his family, Wilson went to Rome, Ga. before entering Johns Hopkins to settle a family
affair involving an estate. While there, Wilson attended a church where he noticed Ellen Louise

Gene Based Evolutionary Theories
This week we learned about and studied gene based evolutionary theories that are associated with
criminal and antisocial behavior. Among the theories was the r/K theory. The r/K theory is used in
evolutionary biology and argues that organisms follow a continuum when reproducing (Smith, 2016,
p. 17). This theory consists of r and K selection which are basically opposite of one another. When
environmental opportunities allow, organisms near the r end reproduce rapidly and productively.
However when doing so, not much time is invested in their offspring (Cullen, Agnew, Wilcox, 2014,
p. 71). All of the following are components of r selection: mating is emphasized, several children are
reproduced, early reproduction occurs, and rapid and productive

Analysis Of The Harvest Gypsies By Steinbeck
The bare land of California faced severe drought under the scorching sun, precious crops are harvest
ready, scarcely diminishing without any growers around. However, a group of benevolent nomads
approaches this dying land in hopes of living among it and healing it. Migrants from all around the
world travel across countries, borders, and vast terrain. California, being a famous location today in
the United States, is also set to be the heaviest drought environment with very large farmlands. This
land would have deteriorated, but it was healed in the most mundane way, agricultural farming.
Steinbeck introduces the mere impact that these migrants they ve had in the country, but in most cases,
it s not seen like that. In The Harvest Gypsies , Steinbeck writes a deliberate passage to assure that
these migrants are not of the country s problem. He denounces prejudice views among them, includes
the issues they face with the law, incorporates their unprecedented arrival, and alludes California s
importance in migrant labor for agricultural economics. Near the beginning of the passage, Steinbeck
s technique is to use specific word choices to imply that most residential views on migrants/gypsies
are prejudice. They are often a part of: This hatred of the stranger that occurs in the whole range of
human history (2). Steinbeck uses hatred of the stranger to tap into a sort of knowledge of history.
Aside from his, he shares a view in which they are often seen as ignorant and

The Body Theory And Its Strength And Weaknesses
Am I the same person today as I was yesterday? Will I be the same person a few years from now as I
am now? Kagan explains a few theories that can help with figuring out what makes me, me. There is
the soul theory, the body theory, and the personality theory. The body theory consists of the brain and
body theory and the torso and body theory. After looking into each theory carefully through Kagan s
lectures, I found that there were flaws in all three theories. The theory that I favor, however, is the
body theory and more specifically the brain aspect of that theory. In my essay I will discuss why I
favor the body theory and its strength and weaknesses. I will also discuss Kagan s take on survival.
To start with, the body theory is not mysterious like the soul theory. If I believed in souls, and favored
the soul theory, how could I prove that I did not get a new soul every five hours or three days? I would
not be able to. The body theory means having the same body. This also means having most of your
same body. For example, in Star Wars when Luke Skywalker got his hand cut off, he still had most of
his body; therefore, he is the same person.
Now there are some problems with this theory as Kagan points out. The problem is resurrection. There
is no current proof of a body being resurrected from the ground, but there is a possibility of bodily
resurrection that cannot be denied. The issue with bodily resurrection is that it draws the question, is
the resurrected body really

Animal Abuse The shocking number of animal abuse cases reported every day is nothing compared to

The first step in conducting the experiment was deciding who was going to be tested. The test
included using four classes each of a different grade level to perform the color/concentration test on.
Each student was given a notecard to document their: Name, Age, Gender, Grade, Score, and Time.
The first test was fireworkspop.com/colortest which was the simpler of the two test. As students take
the test monitor the room and answer any questions anyone has getting to the website. After
completing the first test the students will then their first score on the note card and proceed to take the

option to continue anonymously and the website calculates the score and gives the time it was
completed in. The students wrote all their results before the note cards are taken up to be compiled
into a graph. Let time go by before doing the experiment when the gum is included. The reason for
waiting a while before doing the second portion of the test is so the subjects would not be expecting it,
therefore they would not be prepared, making results more accurate. Splitting the class in half by
numbers then again by gender, give each group one of two flavors of gum cinnamon

The Role Of Fate In Greek Mythology
When we look at Greek Mythology we often run into the gods of that era. Sometimes they are merely
backdrops to the human element of the story but in stories such as The Odyssey the gods play a
prominent if not vital role to the central themes of the story.
Fate has a place in the Greek world but is place is not the same as it is in other scenarios or worlds. It
is important to understand the word before we discuss it. Fate as far as Greek mythology goes is not

That was his free will. Some say that the gods knew Odysseus would not stay and that is why they
decided to let him go. However, knowledge of an act doesn t take away the fact that Odysseus chose
himself. The gods took much of his life away and he had more reason than anyone to give up and say
to himself, This is my fate. Ann, a critic of The Odyssey says, Blaming the gods for your faults doesn t

Books Are Humanity in Print,
The human race is known for change; it has evolved from prehistoric cavemen , ancient empires, and
Vikings to aristocratic monarchies, democracies, and dictatorships. With each passing year, there are
technological advancements, changing political platforms, and a progressively mobile worldwide
population. Each literary era reflects the human feats, lifestyles, and changing times: Anglo Saxon
epics consist of glory battle scenes, bloodied warriors, and feuding countries; Middle English works
consist of glorified knights, the chivalric code, and a greedy, materialistic court; and, modern literary
classics depict worlds of which the human race is ruled by technology. ... Show more content on

While most of the poem depicts pagan customs, such as wergild,, there are three specific ways that
Christianity is seen: the title character, Beowulf, is depicted as good while Grendel, who descended
from Cain, is depicted at evil; there are conflicting ideas of fate and free will; and the lord is seen as
an almightily, singular being. Following the Norman Conquests, the French influence drastically
changed the British Isles: the language of the aristocracy became French; feudalism, a social and
economic hierarchy, became the caste system of choice; and, chivalry was abounded. However, The
French influence quickly declined following the Crusades, the struggle between church and state, the
Magna Carta, the Hundred Years War, the Bubonic Plague, and the rise of cities. The anonymously

moral decline, the poem is filled with elaborate descriptions of courtly festivities, the accouterments of

about this information is that no one has really stopped him or any of this staff from not releasing new
documents. WikiLeaks is a little radical, as it shares anything and everything without mercy. A
possible solution to ease up Wikileaks aggressive nature is to release tidbits of information, and rally
the people to pressure the government in releasing the rest. That sure may make the release more self
controlled rather than the media shoving it down the public s throat. However, Assange does not seem
like the guy to do this. It seems that he would rather keep many of his sources under wraps, and leave
the public guessing as to how he retrieved important documents. Out of all of the three Klosterman
villains, Assange is definitely the closest to a real one, but it is fascinating how much of a gray area is
still there between the opinions of several

Making a chivalrous decides he decides to stay and not run away from them just because they want
him dead. Roland also represents a knight by having religious beliefs for god, he gives his loyalty and
everything he has to his spiritual belief. The feudal system linked lords and vassals with a series of
obligations and loyalties. A vassal gave his total loyalty in exchange for protection and vengeance
should the vassal be killed in service of his lord. In The Song of Roland, vassalage is depicted as
parallel to Christianity. Roland s ultimate liege lord is God, and it is in serving Charlemagne that

Dumping of the most poisonous materials was banned from the London Dumping Convention in

Synopsis Of The Novel Train On Pakistan By Khushwant...
The well known novel Train to Pakistan initiates study on theme of partition. This story opens the
phase of political hatred, violence and sectarianism in a brilliant and realistic way. Related to those
decisive or fateful days, which were brought by the British Raj followed by destruction, death and
deracination for the north of the subcontinent; Khushwant Singh refers to the fact that India might
have gained independence then, but the price they paid for it was Partition . The strength and the
power of unity were deliberately divided between the two nations. It depicts the pitiful tale of
individuals and communities suffered in the revolution of Partition. Tran to Pakistan illustrates the
agony suffered on both sides of the political boundaries India and Pakistan after the partition.
In general, partition uprooted the whole country and it is described as one of the deadliest experience
the natives ever had of leaving their belongings behind and adapting the idea of new land, which was
not theirs. The harrowing and spine chilling events of 1947 had shaken the faith of the people in the
innate human beings. It had driven them into the state of wonder over what man has made of man. To
Khushwant Singh, this was a period of great disillusionment and crisis of values, a distressing and
disintegrating period of his life. The belief he had cherished all his life was shattered. Giving strength
to his inner struggle and agony, he says: I had believed in the innate goodness

Our Goals For 2016 Are Focused On Increasing Shareholder...
Shareholder value. Our goals for 2016 are primarily focused on increasing shareholder value.
As I watched many of my colleagues being escorted out of the building on a Wednesday morning in
March 2016, my thoughts wandered back to those words spoken at our most recent employee forum
from the previous month. Our CEO was on his annual tour of the country speaking to thousands of
employees along the way. The message was a positive one. Success in 2015! Projects completed,
money saved, and improved customer satisfaction. All of these accomplishments made possible by the
innovative and hardworking staff working both behind the scenes and on the frontlines. Now, it was
time for new challenges. The message was clear as our CEO ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Surely if it was attached to a name, they wouldn t have let my colleague go. If it was attached to a
name, they would have remembered that he took a lower paying position with the company just over
one year ago because management convinced him it was a more stable, longer term position. They
would have known that he had finally saved enough and just bought his first home one month prior.
They would have known that he takes care of his elderly mother. If it was attached to a name they
would have known that he came to Canada to find a better life and was in the middle of a two year
application process to sponsor his wife to move to Canada. But they didn t know. How could they
know? He was one of tens of thousands of employees. By outsourcing some of the work to a firm
from China, the company could potentially save millions of dollars in Operating Expenses. At the end
of the day, really, management was making a calculated decision to place shareholder value over the
value of their employees.
This is a challenge with being a manager in the world of globalization. When making decisions, it s
tempting to not attach names, to not attach faces, and to get caught wearing blinders with your gaze
solely focused on bottom line figures. To be fair, top level managers are primarily judged on their
ability to improve profitability. If they can t deliver financial success, they will most likely not be a
top level manager for very long. Globalization is a viable

Piaget s Theory Of Cognitive Development Essay
Discuss Piaget s theory of Cognitive Development Cognitive Development can be defined as the
development of thought processes. This includes thinking, concept understanding, problem solving,
and decision making and remembering from childhood on to adulthood. There are two theories of
Cognitive development that offer us two different ways of understanding it. The first is called Domain
general. This theory states that one line of development determines all of the changes in a child s
intellectual system (van Geert, 1998). This means that if one thing goes wrong then it will impact on
all other areas of a child s cognitive system, resulting in a high scale problem. The second is the
Domain specific theory. This theory varies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children in this stage believe that everything is about them; they have an egocentric view of the
world. Piaget s three mountains task was used in order to detect the ability to mentally rotate an image
(Inagaki et al., 2002). Children aged four or five were not able to say what another person would be
able to see from their view; these skills are not gained until the age of around nine years old.
120281576 In stage three we have the concrete operations where children begin to gain some logical
reasoning about the world. This stage occurs between seven and twelve years of age according to
Piaget. They start to solve conservation problems but are very limited to concrete situations as they
find systematic thinking difficult (Piaget, 1972). Stage four is the formal operational stage, ages
twelve and above. Children learn to think about abstract ideas logically in this stage. They learn to
understand that their behaviour can have different consequences under different condition (Piaget,
2008). There are many critics of Piaget s stage theory, Margaret Donaldson and Hughes to name a few.
A problem with his theory is that it proposes a single linear sequence that holds four very broad stages
where each person must pass in order to fully develop their cognitive skills (Feldman, 2004). It
therefore is too general as it does not give us much detail about the different stages and does not take
into account any individual differences at all.

  • 2. The Possibilities of Technological Influences on Evolution Introduction In humanity, as in all of life, the most successful traits in producing offspring will also become the most prevalent. There is a belief that because we no longer fight for our survival, we will no longer evolve. Evolution, however, has no goal or foresight. Though we have seized the need to fight, and have triumphed to the top of the animal food chain, we continue to change and develop by whatever is most successful for production. This could be beneficial, but could also have detrimental effects. This paper will discuss these positive and negative possibilities, as well as how technology could greatly alter our evolutionary path. The Ideal of the Body The initial future envisioned by the author was admittedly an ideal one. It s easy to imagine that without limit to food and shelter that would otherwise inhibit our potential, we may become taller. History shows that this has long been the trend and humanity could perhaps come to a 6 5 average, or even higher, but at this point much taller mates would likely cease to be attractive as we would be reaching our peak of structural stability. Humans much taller than this would be over encumbered by their own density, and have inhibited walking capabilities (Fowler, 2006). Because of this, the author predicted the possibility of an increasingly uniform height, as both very tall and shorter members of society are selected against. Large amounts of body hair also tend to be chosen against and humans would likely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. American Transcendentalist Writers Essay Following the influx of the puritanical style of writing in America during the 17th Century by the Founding Fathers, it could be said that what we now know as the collective `American writing was once created almost as an effort to distance its own style from that of other European styles. Perhaps not being incredibly popular outside their own circle of influence, writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalists began, in the 19th Century, to weave a new form of writing using philosophy as the `vehicle of thought . While this allowed them to explore new and untouched areas in the mind, it also greatly influenced many later writers from Henry Thoreau to the more `popular and recent Mark Twain. Let us begin with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although some critics may treat Walden as simply a text on the love of nature, Thoreau s message, and indeed philosophy, seems to lay deeper. Although he never openly criticises the state of America, there are certainly references to suggest that this text is somewhat a social commentary or criticism of the society in which he lived. For example he suggests `Better if [men] had been born in the open pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have clearer eyes what field they were called to labour in . Through this extract, and indeed through much of the text, we can see that Thoreau uses the image of nature to suggest his own ideal of society. It seems that by isolating himself from civilisation, he begins to understand himself through self realisation and thus establishes his own identity. From the question, `Why should they begin digging their own graves as soon as they are born? , we learn a little of Thoreau s philosophy on life: he disagrees with the collective identity of the increasingly capitalist America in which he lives, asking why should we passively comply with a capitalist machine? Similar to the way in which Thoreau isolated himself from civilisation, poet Emily Dickinson also attempted to question the values of this new society in which she lived, except this time from within the seclusion of her own home in Massachusetts. Clearly Dickinson s poetry was far from anything the American public had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Makropulos Case Analysis Bernard William s The Makropulos Case focuses on the topic of immortality, and the issues that would arise from being immortal. William s uses the concept of the Makropulos play to refute the idea of immortality, because the protagonist kills themselves out of unbearable boredom from exhausting their categorical desires. Whereas John Martin Fischer rejects William s view of immortality, due to the limiting constraints of his argument. Fischer asserts the immortal life would be livable, because it reflects a mortal life. In effect, I will further Fischer s argument, in proposing the concept of categorical desires evolving, and then the significance of external factors occurring in society. Therefore, William s asserts the immortal life would be undesirable, or unlivable since we will inevitably exhaust our categorical desires (100). Whereas, Fischer denies William s dilemma, because his argument is too narrow in thinking, because William asserts the agent would possess only one categorical desire. However, Fischer denies William s assertion, because the immortal agent would not be pursuing only one interest. Fischer questions William s mode of reasoning on why the agent must pursue only one interest; Fischer proposes that the individual would possess a package of categorical desires, which would enable the agent to move in to their immortal future without succumbing to eternal boredom. Certainly, an immortal life could consist in a certain mix of activities, possibly including friendship, love, family, intellectual, artistic and athletic activity, sensual delights, and so forth (216). Rather relentlessly pursuing one good, the packages of categorical desires enable the agent to move between pleasures and keep themselves busy. Furthermore, Fischer rejects William s assertion that the immortal agent cannot undergo any form of boredom, and that they must constantly be absorbed in their environment. Fischer asserts all mortal lives consists of temporary moments of boredom/pains, which enable the agent to proceed to mentally stimulating environment/goods (261). He clarifies that after he got his surgery despite everything he had the inclination that his arm was still joined to his body. Furthermore, Steen says when he initially began shaving subsequent to turning into an amputee, he would encounter torment and a shivering sensation in his removed hand when the left side (the side where his arm is cut away) of his face was being shaved. For Steen his issue lies in the somatosensory cortex. Meaning the left half of his body (the skin) is controlled by the right half of his mind along a vertical piece of cortex. The severed left arm of Steen s does not get any contribution from the mind, in this manner making the cut away hand ache for another tactile information. • 10. Commo Corruption In Robert Bolt s A Man For All Seasons A Man for All Seasons asks the audience a crucial question; would a man sacrifice his beliefs for power and control? Plagued with themes of supremacy and control, Robert Bolt s A Man for All Seasons features the protagonist Thomas More who is fiercely truthful and honest. Thomas More is foregrounded within the play to highlight the themes of power, control and ultimately corruption amongst the monarchy. The play, A Man for all Seasons, provides the audience with a deeper and more accurate portray of Sir Thomas More in comparison to the film, giving the audience a more enriched story of the overarching theme. Represented in two different forms, the story is given more depth and justice in the play, unpacking the different themes of the Common Man, water and corruption. Underpinning the entirety of A Man For All Seasons, the corruption of individuals and of the monarchy system is an issue which is brought to the forefront of the audience s mind. The audience is consistently asked to question the strength of man to repeal the corruption of power and control, and how people themselves can be so easily corrupted. Once again, the play represents this well, using the Gilded Cup to clearly symbolize the corruption in the monarchy which then started the catalyst of the play. In contrast to the play, the film marginalizes this important scene, limiting the audience s opportunity to delve deeply into the meaning of the Gilded Cup. In addition to this, A Man For All Seasons focuses on the rise of Richard Rich and the fall of Sir Thomas More. More stays strong to his morals, resisting pressure of the monarchy. • 11. Analytical Analysis Of Wes Anderson s Moonrise Kingdom Analytical Paper on Moonrise Kingdom From the moment you turn on a Wes Anderson movie, you can easily recognize it s his due to the unique style. Moonrise Kingdom is one of his most popular and stylized films to date. One scene in particular I want to look into is the scene when Scout Master Ward and the other scouts are introduced. (5:31 8:39) This scene is important to setting up the rest of the movie. It introduces us to the antagonists for the first part of the film as well as showing that Sam ran away from the camp. The opening shot to the scene tells you everything about the location. The wooden sign lets you know right away that they re in a boy scout camp, while the sign also works as a frame around the tents in the background. (5:31 5:42) Then it cuts to Scout Master Ward exiting a tent and going about his daily business. From the moment his character is introduced, you can tell that he s in a position of power. (5:42 5:55) This claim is further supported when all the characters are sitting at the breakfast table, and Scout Master Ward sits in the middle. (7:43 7:53) Most films may have Scout Master Ward sitting at the head of the table, however with the way this scene is shot, it makes sense that he be in the exact middle to show his power dynamic. All the colors in the scene have an earthy tone, meaning there is a lot of browns, dark greens and yellows. This works because they re supposed to be at a boy scout camp, and are learning to be experts in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Recession Turmoil Caused By U.s. Subprime Mortgage Crisis Wall Street turmoil caused by U.S. Subprime Mortgage Crisis had eventually evolved to global financial crisis. The financial crisis that has engulfed the world is really a disaster, leading to precipitous shrinkage of human wealth and instantaneous evaporation of long time efforts by financial institutions. But why did such financial crisis take place? Who should be blamed? As far as I concern, Federal Reserve deserves the greatest blame, as its ultra loose monetary policy created housing bubble, sowing the seeds of crisis. And its subsequent tighten policy pricked that kind of bubble, precipitatingsubprime mortgage crisis. Together with the former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan indulged rampant financial derivatives, which made the economy worse off. From 2001, Federal Reserve began to cut interest rates, and after cutting for 13 times, by june.2003, it reduced target rate to 1% which hit the lowest level in the past 46 years. Due to such loose monetary policy, lending rates declined at the same time, 30 year fixed mortgage rates dropped from 8.1%in 2000 to 5.8% in 2003. In this case, Americans house purchasing enthusiasm rose dramatically. And speculating on real estate appeared. However bubble would burst eventually. From june.2005, Federal Reserve began to reserve its low interest rate policy, and raised its interest rates for 13 times, so by august.2006, Fed target rate was increased from 1% to 5.25%. The interest rates were put up continuously, which increased borrowing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Truth has consequences; by knowing too much, one can lose a friend, learn a deadly secret, or become someone they do not want to be. To express his understanding of himself and the world around him, Crake in Oryx and Crake uses quote bearing fridge magnets. One very important quote is We understand more than we know . This shows Crake s grand understanding of biology, but not any knowledge of how these people will soon acquire notions of art, gods, or symbolism. He has done few trials, and consequently has little evidence to prove that the Children of Crake will be successful. Furthermore, Crake is able to understand Jimmy s incredible attraction to Oryx from the first time they glimpse her on the HottTotts website. What Crake understands is Jimmy s love for Oryx, but what he doesn t know is that Jimmy will choose in the end to not let him and Oryx re enter the Paradice Dome. Jimmy accepts that for complete renewal of the human race, not only Crake, but Oryx as well, must die, for both have sinned against the potential goodness of humanity and she is a hinge in Crake s attempt to re enter Paradice (DiMarco 191). The Awoke Tadiwa Njagu Professor Lewis HRM530 8102015 Within any company, managers must be reminded that the focus of a layoff is not on the actual individual being released, but rather on the position itself. The layoff decision is made based on the needs of the company and the position. If the individual is not fulfilling the position or if the position is no longer necessary, the company must make the decision to let the person go. With this perspective, managers can prevent as many negative emotions as possible and it will additionally affect the communication between the manager and employee being laid off. Three Ways the Layoff May Affect the Company Even if a layoff is completed successfully and with little resistance, there are possible negative effects in which the decision can have on the company. These include: * Decrease trust among valuable employees * Hidden costs, such as severance packages, may cause the layoff to be ineffective * Workplace morale may decrease Companies are oftentimes hasty to undergo layoffs as they feel they are eliminating their ineffective employees and building an environment full of strong and effective employees. • 17. Education for Sustainable Development Essay Sustainability development has three components: environment, society, and economy. If you consider the three to be overlapping circles of the same size, the area of overlap in the center is human well being. As the environment, society, and economy become more aligned, the area of overlap increases, and so does human well being. Therefore, education for sustainable development (ESD) is the use of education as a tool to achieve sustainability. Simply put, ESD is a way to make the world a safer, healthier, and more livable place for us and future generations (McKeown, 2002, pgs 7 9). Since students in grades 3 through 5 typically learn better by incorporating all three learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) into their daily classroom work, instructors for these grades may find it easier to create and design lesson plans. Including sustainable development on a basic level into the curriculum at this age is generally not difficult because science and reading classes have usually touched on the subject of recycling or the environment. A simple, low cost activity would be for students to make reminder plates for light switches and thermostats in their homes or schools (see Appendices A and B). This lesson allows students to be creative in designing the reminder plates and it allows them to teach their families and friends about conserving energy. The War Over Territory On The Southern Border Happiness is often mistaken for a simple concept at first glance, even though it is often responsible for a human s actions, thoughts, and even perspective on numerous topics. Different social factors come together from almost every portion of life, to create one s happiness ranking. A strategy like this can be used by a single person, but it also has the ability to be used to analyze a certain place or country. One country that s currently dealing with a significant amount of issues, is Lebanon. Many of the social factors looked at as a source of happiness, are either missing or being threatened by radical groups within the country. War over territory on the southern border has been a consistent problem within the country for decades, leading to a significant amount of destruction and tension between the Lebanese and their neighbors. Not to mention, many major cities like Beirut have been plagued by the country s inability to properly remove waste and control the homeless population. Maybe the biggest uproar taking place in Lebanon right now, is the youth unhappiness with religion and the impact it has on society. On the other hand, the positives are not exactly where they should be. Lebanon has been fortunate to have fertile land and great tourist destinations. • 23. Compare And Contrast Anime And Anime In recent years, animated programs have dominated the world of film and TV in both America and Japan. These programs, known as cartoons and anime, are some of the most popular forms of entertainment today. Anime and cartoon shows, such as One Piece and Family Guy, have been running for decades and are very well known among society. Animated films such as Disney s The Lion King and Studio Ghibli s Spirited Away have also thrived and even surpassed animated television shows in some instances. Both American and Japanese animation industries have flourished, and their cartoons and animes continue to grow in popularity. However, similarities and differences between the two soon arise when compared closely; these observations are often what lead fans to prefer one style over the other as well as shape pop culture. Anime and cartoons had very similar origins. Gertie the Dinosaur from 1914 is considered the first American cartoon. Japan s first anime is not as clear, but many believe it to be 1917 s An Obtuse Sword. Both of these animated features were short, silent, and black and white. Their rise in popularity and introduction of the style of animation seen in the modern world did not begin until their Golden Age of animation. In the US, the Golden Age was from the 1920 s to 1960 s; this was when Walt Disney created his own animation studio and began to put out longer cartoons with sound and color. I believe walls have many adverse effects on people, countries, and civilizations, and I believe a poem from Robert Frost and a speech from Ronald Reagan help prove that point. Both Frost and Reagan discuss the lack of benefits walls have for people. In Frost s poem, the narrator states that We wear our fingers rough with handling them. This shows that the upkeep of the wall causes the narrator and neighbor physical harm, when they are gaining nothing in return for keeping the wall. In Reagan s speech, he is addressing the East and he states I join you, as I join your fellow countrymen in the West, disclosing that the people of Berlin should be together when they are separated. I believe Reagan is also trying to touch on how the people of Berlin are separated from their family and friends if they are unlucky enough to be on opposite sides of the wall, and that there is no way for those people to reach their family and friends because they would be killed if they tried to get over the wall without permission. A young girl defining her identity is an obstacle on its own, but adding in complex aspects of adulthood can make it worse. Another unsettling, yet unsurprising aspect of Twilight, pertains to the overwhelming need Bella seems to have to grow up too fast. It can be assumed that the author placed this element into the text because her target audience could relate to the feeling. Once you have six houses and a plane, it s just about a number. It s never been anything I understood. This is a quote by Kevin Bacon, a very awesome and apparently worldly actor, and it perfectly captures the essence of the theme that I have come to for The Great Gatsby. The theme I see most strongly reflected in the book is this: Although greed and lust are human nature, they are often used as a substitute for happiness, but almost always lead to decay. I will provide examples of this theme by looking into events and the behavior of characters throughout the plot of the book. One main event in the book that I believe strongly represents the theme is when Gatsby is shot while floating in the pool that he had one of the people working for him wait to drain even though it was the beginning of the fall season (p.161). I see this as a strong reflection of the theme starting with the symbolism of the pool (which is apart of a long chain of symbols). I m going to drain the pool to day, Mr. Gatsby. Leaves ll start falling pretty soon, and then there s always trouble with the pipes. Don t do it to day, Gatsby answered. He turned to me apologetically. You know, old sport, I ve never used that pool all summer? Kagan explains a few theories that can help with figuring out what makes me, me. There is the soul theory, the body theory, and the personality theory. The body theory consists of the brain and body theory and the torso and body theory. After looking into each theory carefully through Kagan s lectures, I found that there were flaws in all three theories. The theory that I favor, however, is the body theory and more specifically the brain aspect of that theory. In my essay I will discuss why I favor the body theory and its strength and weaknesses. I will also discuss Kagan s take on survival. To start with, the body theory is not mysterious like the soul theory. If I believed in souls, and favored the soul theory, how could I prove that I did not get a new soul every five hours or three days? I would not be able to. The body theory means having the same body. This also means having most of your same body. For example, in Star Wars when Luke Skywalker got his hand cut off, he still had most of his body; therefore, he is the same person. Now there are some problems with this theory as Kagan points out. The problem is resurrection. There is no current proof of a body being resurrected from the ground, but there is a possibility of bodily resurrection that cannot be denied. It is true that the gods interfere with the lives of the people, but that will never take away their free will. Zeus says it himself in the beginning of The Odyssey while talking to other gods upon Olympus, My word how mortals take the gods to task! All their afflictions come from us, we hear. And what of their own failings? (Homer 210) This statement by Zeus says that the people are indeed responsible for themselves and they have the ability to make their own choices. Regarding the same verse Torrey stated, This makes it seem that while men don t take responsibility in the Odyssey, the gods say they should... With each passing year, there are technological advancements, changing political platforms, and a progressively mobile worldwide population. Each literary era reflects the human feats, lifestyles, and changing times: Anglo Saxon epics consist of glory battle scenes, bloodied warriors, and feuding countries; Middle English works consist of glorified knights, the chivalric code, and a greedy, materialistic court; and, modern literary classics depict worlds of which the human race is ruled by technology. ... Following the Norman Conquests, the French influence drastically changed the British Isles: the language of the aristocracy became French; feudalism, a social and economic hierarchy, became the caste system of choice; and, chivalry was abounded. However, The French influence quickly declined following the Crusades, the struggle between church and state, the Magna Carta, the Hundred Years War, the Bubonic Plague, and the rise of cities. The anonymously authored, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, reflects the shifting social order. A satire of a culture in moral decline, the poem is filled with elaborate descriptions of courtly festivities, the accouterments of knighthood, and the inane codes of chivalry. The knights of both the era and the poem are dressed to the nines: fancy belts, gold plated shields, and various other garments unnecessary for warfare. The knights pledged their loyalty to their kings, their honor to women, and their defense to the Christian faith. In the poem, Christmas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Would they be petty nuisances, or a dark force slowly eating away at society? There are very few people that could fit this title, but in Electric Funeral, a chapter in I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling with Villains (Real and Imagined), Chuck Klosterman, a best selling author, details what some of these villains of today are: different types of technocrats. The three villains he mainly focuses on are Perez Hilton, Kim Dotcom, and Julian Assange, who each varies greatly on the spectrum of their acts. Social media can do the same, but WikiLeaks has a reputation for publishing the truth. The worst thing about this information is that no one has really stopped him or any of this staff from not releasing new documents. WikiLeaks is a little radical, as it shares anything and everything without mercy. A possible solution to ease up Wikileaks aggressive nature is to release tidbits of information, and rally the people to pressure the government in releasing the rest. That sure may make the release more self controlled rather than the media shoving it down the public s throat. However, Assange does not seem like the guy to do this. It seems that he would rather keep many of his sources under wraps, and leave the public guessing as to how he retrieved important documents. Out of all of the three Klosterman villains, Assange is definitely the closest to a real one, but it is fascinating how much of a gray area is still there between the opinions of several ... • 47. Piaget s Theory Of Cognitive Development Essay Discuss Piaget s theory of Cognitive Development Cognitive Development can be defined as the development of thought processes. This includes thinking, concept understanding, problem solving, and decision making and remembering from childhood on to adulthood. There are two theories of Cognitive development that offer us two different ways of understanding it. The first is called Domain general. This theory states that one line of development determines all of the changes in a child s intellectual system (van Geert, 1998). This means that if one thing goes wrong then it will impact on all other areas of a child s cognitive system, resulting in a high scale problem. The second is the Domain specific theory. This theory varies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children in this stage believe that everything is about them; they have an egocentric view of the world. Piaget s three mountains task was used in order to detect the ability to mentally rotate an image (Inagaki et al., 2002). Children aged four or five were not able to say what another person would be able to see from their view; these skills are not gained until the age of around nine years old. 120281576 In stage three we have the concrete operations where children begin to gain some logical reasoning about the world. This stage occurs between seven and twelve years of age according to Piaget. They start to solve conservation problems but are very limited to concrete situations as they find systematic thinking difficult (Piaget, 1972). Stage four is the formal operational stage, ages twelve and above. Children learn to think about abstract ideas logically in this stage. They learn to understand that their behaviour can have different consequences under different condition (Piaget, 2008). There are many critics of Piaget s stage theory, Margaret Donaldson and Hughes to name a few. A problem with his theory is that it proposes a single linear sequence that holds four very broad stages where each person must pass in order to fully develop their cognitive skills (Feldman, 2004). It therefore is too general as it does not give us much detail about the different stages and does not take into account any individual differences at all. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
