Essay On Amphibian Species
Britain is home to seven native amphibian species. Three newt species: great crested newt (Triturus cristatus), smooth
newt (Lissotriton vulgaris), palmate newt (Lissotriton helveticus), two frog species: common frog (Rana temporaria),
northern pool frog (Pelophylax lessonae) and two toad species: common toad (Bufo bufo) and natterjack toad (Epidalea
calamita). The northern pool frog is only found at reintroduction sites in England whilst the others are found in England,
Scotland and Wales (Baker, et al. 2011).
All of the UK amphibian species are globally listed as least concern on the IUCN red list but have seen declines within
the country (Buckley & Beebee, 2004). Of the species in the UK, the natterjack toad, common toad, and great ... Show

As well as habitat loss, UK amphibian species suffer from disease and invasive species. Chytrid has been documented
in all seven UK species however the impact of this pathogen is currently not understood (Cunningham & Minting,
2008). The Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex) and marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus) are considered to be of
medium concern whilst the alpine newt (Icthyosaura alpestris) is considered to be of high concern, all due to the risk of
competition, hybridization and disease, especially chytrid in alpine newts (Fisher & Garner, 2011).
In the UK there are three amphibian species listed as European Protected Species under schedule 2 of the Conservation
of Habitats and Species Regulations (2010); the great crested newt, the natterjack toad and the northern pool frog.
Under these regulations it is an offence to: kill, disturb, capture, possess, injure of trade individuals (at any life stage), or
to damage or destroy the places they use for breeding (JNCC, 2010).
Great crested newts are also covered by Annex II of the Habitats directive. This gives member states of the European
Union the ability to designate suitable habitat as Special Areas of Concern (SAC). Under this same act, member states
also have the ability to designate sites as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), these tend to be habitats with either
exceptional numbers of great crested newts or a large variety of more prevalent species

Aurora Ephraim: A Case Study
CORAL GABLES– Fla. (April 19 2015) – University of Miami are putting into effect at the mental health services
offered at their University.
Aurora Ephraim, a senior majoring in Physics, committed suicide at her dorm, March 15, 2015. Her memorial ceremony
was hold on March 26 at the physical department.
Unfortunately, the suicide of Ephraim isn't the first at UM.
Frederik Westerberg, a University of Copenhagen exchange student, was studying molecular biology at UM and had
been enrolled at the university for only one semester. Westerberg took his life on Dec. 17, 2014, right after final exams.
According to the Miami Hurricanes Newspaper, a representative of the family said, "He just wrote that he was really

English is not my first language. It just makes me feel worse when I can't communicate with people effectively. It's a
huge challenge for me. I hope we can have a therapist here who can speak Mandarin," said Fan.
Also, finding the balance between respecting the students privacy and obeying the state order may also be a conflict for
the counseling center.
Danny Renato, an international student from Peru, has been to the counseling center for several times.
" The top mission for the counseling center on campus is keeping their students' safety, so after a couple times I talk to
my doctor about "suicide", they told me if I keep the dangerous idea, they would contact hospitals," said Danny, "I
know their dilemma, but I just have much pressure when I knew I would be hospitalized. Then I tried to digest the bad
feeling by myself."
This past September, University of Miami staff, students and community came together to participate in spreading
suicide awareness by taking part in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's "Walk out of the Darkness."
According to the University of Miami's webpage, with more than 39,500 lives lost to suicide this year, this walk is
relevant to thousands of people in the University of Miami's community and it's clear that UM is eager to get the word

Creative Writing: Lelia's Suicide
Honestly, malicious gossip couldn't have been further from the truth; it's just how it is in a small town. Like Samuel's
father, his grandfather had been a lawyer, and like Lelia's father, her grandfather had been a steamboat captain, nothing
ever seemed to change. Lelia had sat at the same desk where her teacher sat when she had been Lelia's age, attending
the same high school. Frankly, in the tiny town of Cutler Harbor, Maine there were no secrets and no mysteries lurking
anywhere. For Lelia, the appeal of Owen remained the mystery and intrigue, not the handsome man himself. True, Lelia
flirted with Owen as she had with William Randall, III the year before. However, her heart belonged to Samuel Truman,
and she had hoped he'd be asking for her hand in marriage before he left ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Gosh, Mother," Lelia said, standing on the checker kitchen floor, kicking her right foot at nothing. "He'll be gone and I
won't see him until Thanksgiving." Three months could seem a lifetime at Lelia's age. "Lelia Elizabeth, stop arguing and
listen." Marion placed her hands on her daughter's shoulder. "I said, yes. Yes, you may take the bus with Sam over to
Ellingwood to see him off." Samuel gazed pensively at Lelia, her soft, slate–blue eyes appeared dreamier than usual
when she gazed up at him. With his heart beating faster than usual, Sam thought he felt Lelia faintly trembling. Taking a
step back so he could study her intently, he tried to sound convincing when he whispered: "Hey, come on now, it'll be
okay." He wiggled from one foot to the other. Facing her, Sam tightly intertwined his fingers around Lelia's white–
gloved fingers. The couple stood with their eyes locked, searching one another's soul. "Please, don't you dare cry; I'll be
home before you can say Jack Robinson." Sam wanted to sound playful, but it didn't

The Reefs of the Gulf of Mexico
When you think of the Gulf of Mexico the first thing you don't think of is coral reefs. You don't even think of it as place
to go surfing. If you ask a surfer what a reef is, they would probably say something that gets in my way while surfing.
Reefs being either large or small, have grown for over thousands of years. The build–up of limestone or calcite have
given way to magnificent structures that many marine animals call home (Science). Reefs are communities in the ocean
where more than hundreds of different ocean species live (Moran). These reefs in the ocean become a community that
live alongside each other which allows them to grow. Whether the reef is a place to live, find shelter or a place eat, the

Trawlers and fishing boats with large nets will skim the ocean bottom breaking up these coral and destroying them (F.

The salt domes found here in the Gulf of Mexico are thought to be ten –fifteen thousand years old, which are the
underlying structure of the East and West Flower Gardens. These reefs are similar to Caribbean reefs in that the fast
growth rate of the hermatypic corals. Also like other reefs, rays, sharks, sea turtles and over 300 different invertebrates
inhabit the reefs here in the Gulf of Mexico. Boulder star coral and brain coral are two main types of coral. The current
from the south brings warm Caribbean water that moves through the gulf loop. It can move as far inland as Louisiana or
parts of the loop break away to form eddies that bring animal larvae, plant spores that count for many of the Caribbean
species found in the Gulf (Service, flowergarden.noaa.gov/about/natrualsetting.htm;#domes).
Since the water temperature does cool during the winter month's hermatypic coral do not survive close to the coastline
in the Gulf of Mexico. The sandy ocean bottom is what impedes coral from growing in this ocean water as well.
However, there are formations that have occurred that the coral have discovered. Salt Domes hundreds of year's old and
man–made structures from oil rigs and drilling platforms are artificial type reefs that help the coral sustain life in these
waters. These corals make up the East and West Flower Garden

Gold Coast Drivers Case Study
Problem Statement
How can Gold Coast drivers contribute to the sustainability of the Great Barrier Reef whilst idling in traffic congestion?
Gold Coast vehicle owners are currently faced with concerns relating to the amount of carbon emissions being released
into the atmosphere whilst idling in traffic congestion. This is highlighted through their daily, lengthy car journeys
caused by the increase in population. Although these carbon emissions have a direct impact on the immediate
environment it is also contributing to the decline of coral growth on the Great Barrier Reef.
Situated along the Queensland coastline the Great Barrier Reef stretches 2,300km from the north of Bundaberg to the tip
of northern Queensland, making it the largest living structure in the world (Zell, 2012). The threat of ocean acidification
from carbon emissions whilst idling in traffic congestion on the Gold Coast is contributing to the pH balance in the
ocean to become more acidic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Australian Government acknowledge that ocean acidification is one of the highest risk factors to the Great Barrier
Reef and have documented their plans to reduce this threat to the reef in the Reef 2050 Long–Term Sustainability Plan

partnership to fund projects and apply laws that will sustain this World heritage area. These projects include the Green
Climate Fund which targets emissions reduction and the $2.55 billion pledge towards the Emissions Reduction Fund
which creates positive incentives to cut emissions (Commonwealth of Australia, 2015). However, only time and the

Lenny begins the breast augmentation procedure by creating a pocket for the breast implant.
Dr. Lenny makes this incision in one of four areas:
Close to the armpit, where the arm and the chest meet (tranaxiallary)
Just above the crease beneath the breast (inframammary)
In the navel (transumbilical)
Around the base of the areola, which is the dark area that surrounds the nipple (periareolar)
Once the incision is created, Dr. Lenny creates a pocket by gently lifting the breast tissue. This action makes the pocket
for the breast implant.
The breast implant is placed within the newly created pocket. The type of implant (silicone, saline or gummy bear) and
the size of the implant is determined by Dr. Lenny and the patient prior to the breast augmentation procedure.
Breast implant placement may be above or below the pectoral muscle.
Following placement of both breast implants, Dr. Lenny will make sure that they are aligned.
He will close the incisions using stitches, glue or tape (or a combination of the three).
Dr. Lenny will most likely wrap the patient's chest area using gauze bandages and/or provide her with a surgical
compression garment. Keeping the chest area supported assists with the healing

Essay about Symbols and Symbolism in The House of the...
Symbolism in The House of the Seven Gables
American literature reflects life and the struggles faced during existence. Symbols are an eloquent way for an author to
create a more fully developed work of art. The stories themselves tell a tale; however, an author also uses symbols to
relay his message in a more subtle manner. Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the earliest authors to use symbols as an
integral part of his plots. This is clearly seen in both The Scarlet Letter and in The House of the Seven Gables. The use
of symbols causes an "association psychology" to enter into the story, making it more intriguing.1 In Nathaniel
Hawthorne's romance The House of the Seven Gables, symbolism is used eloquently to enhance the story ... Show more

The house is an old wooden building that is rotting away but still is a good enough quality to withstand some of the test
of time.
The house is referred to as a prison by Hawthorne; he calls Hepzibah and Clifford inmates. The house is a prison
because it prevents the inhabitants from truly enjoying any freedom. The inmates attempt an escape from their prison
twice. Initially, as Phoebe and Clifford watch the parade of life in the street, Clifford realizes that his life has become
meaningless, and he cannot help but try to join the masses below. This could mean the only way for Clifford to become
truly reunited with mankind is through death. Unfortunately, Clifford fails to win his freedom and returns to the solace
of his prison. The second attempt at escape is by Clifford and Hepzibah. They attempt to escape the clutches of the
house, but, alas, it is too late for them. The house has affected them too much to stay away. This is apparent when
Hepzibah and her brother made themselves ready– as ready as they could in the best of their old–fashioned garments,
which had hung on pegs, or had been laid away in trunks, so long that the dampness and mouldy smell of the past was
on them– made themselves ready in their faded bettermost, to go to church. They descended the staircase

Informative Essay On Coral Reefs
In the news reporters often talk about the effects of global warming as if they are anywhere from five to one–hundred
years off in the future. Those dangers like unpredictable and catastrophic weather patterns may not pose a major threat
to human populations yet. However, for the inhabitants of earth's coral reefs, the planet's constant warming immediately
endangers thousands of species. While coral reefs occupy only a small fraction of the ocean's floor, they account for
roughly one fourth of the world's marine life. Coral itself, which in large part comprises coral reefs is made up of
thousands of tiny polyps that cling together and secrete a hard outer coating binding the individual polyps together
(Jaap, 212–213). Generally coral make up the vast majority of all reefs, but soft bodied organisms like anemones litter
the sea bed as well. Coral reefs' seemingly eternal balance with man is now in jeopardy, as small things like clownfish
infertility and massive coral population loss begin to snowball, eventually leading to human casualties. These vibrant
structures made up of millions of years of development do not face potential threats from global warming. The existing
threats are imminent.
As mentioned, sea anemones accompany coral on the bottom of the earth's enormous seas. While this may be true,
anatomically they are greatly different from hard bodied corals. They cling to rocks on the seabed using the bottom of
their bodies, Their pedal disc, which functions a lot

Climate Change And Ocean Acidification In The Ocean
It doesn't take more than a glance at the news to notice an article related to climate change. I think that most people in
the United States are aware of climate change, but many choose to blow it off as something of little importance. One of
the areas where climate change is most impactful is in our oceans. Entire ecosystems of our oceans are changed when
molecules like carbon dioxide are added into the mix. Carbon dioxide is a killer in the world's oceans. Not only does
this molecule acidify the ocean, but it also has direct consequences on many types of coral and sea plant life.
Acidification of planet earth's seas affects all living organisms under water. I think it is time to address some of the
issues that climate change and ocean acidification bring to earth's healthy oceans and discuss possible ways to cut
carbon emissions.
Acidification and warming oceans are problematic. Dana Ehlert (2017) says "Recent literature has shown an
approximately linear relationship between global warming and cumulative CO2 emissions." (Ehlert, 2017) Humans
have been adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere largely through burning fossil fuels. Waters states that "Most of this
CO2 collects in the atmosphere and, because it absorbs heat from the sun, creates a blanket around the planet, warming
its temperature. But some 30 percent of this CO2 dissolves into seawater." (Waters, 2016) If we do not work to stop
carbon emissions, oceans will continue to lower in pH and many marine creatures

The Sixth Exinoction In Elizabeth Kolbert's Sixth Extinction
Elizabeth Kolbert mentioned the idea and evidence that a "sixth extinction" is at its beginning phase. In the last half–
billion years, life on Earth has been nearly wiped out five times, these events are known as the Big Five mass
extinctions, and all signs suggest we are now on the brink of a sixth. Except this time, we have no one but ourselves to
blame. Us as humans are causing another mass extinction. Elizabeth Kolbert, throughout her book, The Sixth
Extinction, has proven with sufficient evidence that we are causing the beginning of a new sixth extinction. Scientists
say that the number of species that have gone extinct in the last century should have taken between 800 and 10,000
years to disappear. Why is this occurring? Because of us humans and Kolbert provides multiple species in her book to
explain it. One of these species is the Great Auk ( Pinguinus Impennis), They were numbered in millions, from Norway
to Florida to Italy. They were like penguins however, they lived in a different family than them. Very quickly did they
go extinct due to the way humans used them. The Great Auk were hunted and killed with clubs. As stated by Kolbert
they were "salted, plucked, and fried into oblivion" (Kolbert 62). This is just a small description of what they actually
endured. They were eaten, used for fish bait, and even more morbidly they were used for fire kindling because the oil in
their feathers kept a fire going for long periods of time. They even had their feathers

not that special. Having up to 90 tentacles only 4.5mm in width it's smaller than your fingernail. It was discovered in the
Mediterranean Sea, but has been in areas as far away as japan. It's mostly transparent, except for it's red stomach. Which

The Benefits Of Biorock : Saving The Coral Reefs
"The Benefits of Biorock: Saving the Coral Reefs from CO2"
By
E. Grace Najera
GT Chemistry
18 May 2015
Period 1B Most people when hearing about greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide think of global warming, the ozone
layer being destroyed, burning of fossil fuels, and the heating of the atmosphere; however, not many relate it to the
ocean and the coral reefs. With the climate changing due to the increasing amount of carbon dioxide, ocean acidification
is increasing and as a result coral reefs are at stake of being destroyed. Biorock is one of the most innovative solutions
to start reversing this crisis and move towards reducing the ocean's acidification with the added benefit of saving the
coral reefs. Oceans cover about 70% of the earth's surface. For millions of years, the sea has been responsible for
absorbing most of the carbon dioxide in the air. In fact, oceans absorb about one–third or 22 million tons a day of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. On the other hand, as people have further developed their technology, developing
cars with the combustion of gasoline, manufacturing goods involving factories and burning coal, additional greenhouse
gases have been released. The advancements have come at a price having the oceans absorb more carbon dioxide than
customary. In fact, before scientist started seeing ocean acidification as a threat, it was believed that the ocean's capacity
to absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere was limitless. During the start

Effects Of Ocean Acidification
Ocean acidification will not only have a negative effect on the environment, but also the global economy. The issues
found with ocean acidification in the previous section of the paper correlate with the effects of ocean acidification on
the economy. Marine life forms, most of which will suffer from lower pH levels, are a large part of temperate and
tropical costal regions' economies. If ocean acidification is left as is, the world will start to see declines in various
marine life's population. This would spell disaster for costal economies that largely depend on fishing as a reliable
commodity. Inland economies are also at risk since most likely import seafood to their local restaurants. Another aspect
of the economy to factor into the equation is tourism. With potential decline in marine life populations, including coral
reefs, the tourism sector would likely see a decline in tourist with the continual increase in ocean acidification. Dying
reefs and less marine life would deteriorate from what makes visiting costal areas worth the trip. In addition, if no action
is taken to combat ocean acidification, costal areas could potentially become political hotspots for environmental
protestors, therefor making the area less desirable for a vacation spot. While the temperate and tropic zone economies
will suffer, studies show that the artic region will see an increase in productivity under predicted pH levels and ocean
temperatures. One study in particular estimates a 39%

Effect On Ocean Acidification
Ocean acidification is a harmful, but important process in the ocean, it occurs when carbon dioxide is released into the
ocean causing a reduction in the hydrogen. The process of ocean acidification happens underwater, and creates carbonic
acid, which increases acidity in sea water ecosystems. Ocean acidification is causing climate change in the oceans and
almost all saltwater environments. According to the article Interactive Oceans, "Increasing levels of carbon dioxide,
however, are outstripping the absorptive abilities of the oceans and are causing climate change." This evidence shows
that the increase of carbon which is happening from the process of ocean acidification is causing the climate of oceans
and the atmosphere to change. I predict that the impacts of human activity on ocean acidification will increase. Humans
activity of fossil fuel combustion is causing carbon to be added into the environment and into oceans. Shown in the
article Ocean Acidification: The Other CO2 Problem, "But all signs indicate that unless humans are able to control and
eventually eliminate our fossil fuel emissions, ocean organisms will find themselves under increasing pressure to adapt
to their habitat's changing chemistry or perish." This text shows that human activity has a great impact on ocean
acidification in saltwater ecosystems, because the use of deforestation and fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide. A
solution to the impacts of human activity on ocean acidification is to reduce

The Effects Of Global Warming On The World
Global warming is the term used to describe the rise in the Earth's temperature observed over the last century. It has had
significant effects on the polar ice caps, as the rising temperature is causing them to melt. It has also been linked to
rising sea levels as the rise has been quicker than ever recorded in the last century. It is believed to be caused by
increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, due to burning fossil fuels, other human activities and
volcanic activity. It also doesn't help that most of the world's forests are being cut down to be used for wood and other
materials, this means those plants can no longer photosynthesise and get rid of some of the CO2 (which is a greenhouse
gas) from the atmosphere. The rising temperatures therefore have significant effects on the Earth and its organisms. The
most imminent and noticeable threat is that on the organisms which live in polar habitats, such as polar bears and
penguins, because of the melting ice caps it means that their habitats are being destroyed. There has been a noticeable
decline in the numbers of Adélie penguins on Antarctica, their numbers have gone down from 32,000 breeding pairs to
11,000 breeding pairs in the last 30 years. Over the last 40 years there has been a fall in the population of polar bears,
their status has changed from least concern to vulnerable to endangered. Polar bears use drifting ice to catch prey and if
there is no ice left then their eating habits will decrease

Descriptive Essay About Reefing
Twenty–five at the time, just married, having had my first son I'm not sure what possessed me to jump head first into the
most expensive hobby conceivable, but, that's exactly what I did. The reefing hobby is both challenging, and extremely
rewarding. There are many daily, weekly, monthly, and even annual tasks that must be done to maintain a thriving
system. In this essay I hope to give an understanding of what it's like to keep a piece of God's majestic ocean in my
home.
My current system is 300 gallons in total water volume. It towers in the corner of my living room, dwarfing everything
in its presence. The wall mounted TV is but a small fraction the size of the tank. A faint hum not unlike that of a
refrigerator can be heard from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The arch is riddled with corals, it's crowned with a particularly large SPS colony at least a foot tall known as a green
slimmer. It was given this name because when removed from the water it will excrete a thick, snot like mucus to protect
its delicate polyps.
Polyps are the individual animals that make up the coral colony. They are essentially a round animal with a mouth in the
middle and a ring of tentacles around the mouth. The tentacles possess stinging cells (called nematocysts) and can be
used to sting, paralyze, and catch prey. They also share a communal skeleton that is made up of calcium carbonate
(CaCO3). The calcium carbonate is collected from the water column, and in a closed system (like a fish tank) this must
be dosed daily. Proper levels of calcium and alkalinity are essential for overall health of the reef.
The left side of the aquascape is separated from the right by a deep chasm, or crevasse if you prefer, in the rockwork.
It's dominated by SPS corals. Although their branch structure and overall growth patterns vary, they essentially look like
trees. They come in a variety of bright colors, ranging from crimson to deep blue. They are often more than one color,
for instance some have a
green base that turns to a vivid blue towards the tips. If you were to touch one it would have the texture, and feel of
sharp jagged rock. Small acropora crabs and various other tiny crustaceans inhabit their branches. This is where many

"The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes."– This is a quote

Gwen represents the mainstream ideas of the 60's, this is made by how Gwen thinks that immigrants should not be
welcome in Australia and that no one wants them here and her saying "... No–one asked them to come to this country...",
referring to Tom and his family. Gwen and Meg also symbolize the age gap and how the younger generation rebelled
against things as they are. Gow uses irony to show Gwen being obnoxious and blind to the effect that her behavior has
on people with her saying "You're developing a nasty streak. A very nasty, cruel streak." Having it be Meg who stands
up to her after the school play by telling Gwen "He's just excited tonight. You were awful." At the school play with line
"What did you have to do Shakespeare for?" Gwen is shown to impatient, unsupportive and bored. The character is
mainly concerned with material goods, suggesting that the older generation of this were money orientated and did not
have much concern for others. This is made obvious by Gwen's reaction to the storm with her line "Where's my purse?".
in contrast to Jim's who concerned for his family's safety and tells Gwen to "Stay in the car." Shakespeare has a large
part in this and like in many of Shakespeare's play the storm represents change as after the storm is when the characters
discoveries are made. After the storm Vic takes Gwen for a walk although what was said is not part of the play, With
Jim telling Gwen that he "can guess" how she feels it is suggested that Vic told Gwen about her son, this is because he
has also just found out. Tom is about to die. Before her transformation Gwen acts passive–aggressive by purposely
leaving the box of presents from Jim at home, this is clear with the quote "I'm not spending the day chasing wrapping

The Correlation Between Agro Industrialization And Land...
Dr. Roark's talk, Deep–Sea Coral Perspectives on Ocean Circulation and Mississippi River Drainage Basin Changes,
discusses the correlation between agro–industrialization and land–use changes and how these factors influence ocean
biogeochemical cycles. He uses multiple elements, but mainly radiocarbon and Rhenium accumulation in deep–sea
black corals to determine ocean circulation. The black corals retain these elements because the feeding matter they take
in is exported organic matter from the surface ocean. He ends his lecture by suggesting future studies such as recovery
rates of deep–sea corals after the impacts of fishing.

Rivers then transported soluble ReO4 into the ocean. Algae uptake the Re and upon death the algae sinks to the bottom
where the Re is taken in by the black corals. The half life can then be used to determine ocean circulation much like the
radiocarbons.
The lecture given by Dr. Roark has tied together multiple topics that we've discussed in class this semester. The biggest
correlation I made from his lecture was the introduction of Re into the ocean from the Mississippi River. Rivers are one
of the biggest sources of detritus and they bring in a lot of nutrients from decaying organic materials that enter the river.
Dr. Roark said he was surprised to see Re in the coral samples, but it makes since if coal mines were located close to the
banks of rivers. Much like the corals that are taking in this rare transition metal, organisms such as oysters can also be
taking in elements such as radiocarbons and Re. Pollution in the ocean is a huge problem and it has occurred in many
topics we've discussed.
Dr. Roark mentioned POM's (pieces of organic material) several times and how these elements are being taken in by
organisms at the bottom of the food chain. This relates to the diagram of Mr. Cat that we discussed in class and how a
10 pound cat would have to eat 100 pounds of tuna and the tuna would have to eat 1,000 pounds of mackerel and so on.
Much like the example with DDT, these toxic elements are being introduced to

Climate Change And Global Warming
A lot of attention has been focused on the impacts of climate change and global warming on forests, farms, freshwater
sources and the economy. But what has climate change and global warming done to the ocean and the creatures that live
in the ocean? Earth 's oceans have been contaminated with pollution and global warming/climate change. "When Earth
formed about 4.5 billion years ago there were no oceans. Since then, as surface water has accumulated, the filling ocean
basins have been the reaction chamber for the development of life on Earth and have played a fundamental role in the
ongoing evolution of the planet 's climate(Brierly et al)." The effects of climate change and global warming on marine
life can be seen through ocean acidification, fish migration, and the impacts on US fish industry.
Climate change and global warming are two of the most serious environmental challenges to face Earth. Global
warming is the constant heating of Earth 's surface, including oceans and atmosphere. Climate change is both the
heating and cooling of Earth. Scientists have documented the rise in average temperatures worldwide since the late
1800s. "Earth 's average temperature has risen by 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit over the past century, according to the
Environmental Protection Agency. Temperatures are projected to rise another 2 to 11.5 degrees Fahrenheit over the next
100 years(Bradford)." Increasing global temperatures are expected to disrupt ecosystems, pushing animals to

Dead Man's Fingers Research Paper
The Anthozoa, Alcyonium Digitatum, looks like an irregular cluster of decomposing fingers. This is why it is more
commonly known as Dead Man's Fingers. This soft coral appears to be fuzzy looking from the polyps. These creatures
can live to be 20 years old. A mature colony is about 20 mm thick, while a younger one is around 10 mm in diameter. A
fully grown Dead Man's Fingers colony can be up to 20 mm. They can appear to be orange or pink, but from July to
December, they become inactive and develop a brownish color. When it becomes dormant, it finishes the development
of the gonads.
When it is time for them to reproduce, it is done externally. Each colony is either male or female, but occasionally there
is a colony that is hermaphroditic. The coral is usually mature after two years and can then start to reproduce. Between
December and January is typically when they will release their gametes into the water. It will then form into a larvae.
The larvae will then find a hard surface to call its home for the rest of its life. It will then grow into polyps that have 8
tentacles around the mouth.
The Alcyonium Digitatum preys on almost anything that swims near its mouth, but it mostly feeds on plankton. Its able

Source Summary: Clownfish Mating
Victoria Bloodworth BISC 163, Section 1 Source Summary 1 Clownfish Mating Clownfish are grouped with other
anemone fish in describing their mating behavior. Although these fish may live in groups of up to 6, only two fish in
each colony will be engaged in reproduction. The dominant, largest fish in the group will be the female and the next
largest will be the male involved in reproducing. This article describes specifically the process of egg laying and will be
used to describe the oviparous nature of clownfish mating in the presentation. The clownfish male will aggressively
pursue the female and "chase" her to the nest he has previously built prior to spawning. During this period of
"courtship" erection of the dorsal fin will also occur and the female body protrudes, filling with eggs. When the female
prepares to lay the eggs, the ovipositor appears, allowing eggs to float down from her belly, through the tube–like
structure, and into the nest as she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The male swims over the freshly lain eggs, fertilizing them externally in the water, and stays in the nest to protect the
eggs. He will eat those that fail to be fertilized successfully or become useless for any other reason. The eggs are
attached to the nesting site, but it is not a strong hold, thus the need for the male to stay for protection from predators.
The eggs will remain in the site for an incubation period that averages about one week. The actual number of days is
dependent upon how hot or cold the water surrounding the eggs becomes and how rich in nutrients the chosen nest area
is. In general, colder water will produce a lengthier nesting time. Using his "pectoral fins," the male will "fan" the eggs
and "aerate with his mouth" in order to provide an optimal environment for the eggs to survive incubation. After this
period, the eggs will hatch and spend about 10 days as larvae. Then, the reproduction stage has

The Fourth Extinction : An Unnatural History By Elizabeth...
There have been five major mass extinction on earth triggered by a distinguishable event, but in The Sixth Extinction:
An Unnatural History, Elizabeth Kolbert writes of the narrative of the sixth extinction caused directly by human impact.
The book identifies the effects of human activity on how, over humans history on earth, the natural world has been
affected. Every environmental impact stems into three basic groups of global problems to nature: Pollution, Habitat loss
and Invasive Species. Kolbert explains that each impact can be traced back to one source, human industrial
development. With each impact various types of life in the natural world are affected. Deforestation, urbanization, and
sea level rise contribute to habitat loss worldwide. When humans began to travel they also brought invasive species and
disease along with them; as boats only became bigger more and more invasive species travel. This reverse engineering
of the planet species, brings new species that don't have any natural predators, thus having an easier time driving native
species out to endangerment or extinction. The different outcomes that come from human pollution is separated
throughout the book, but the idea remains constant; with the development of human culture, pollution has drastically
impacted a vast extent of species habitats and their environment. Humans pollution of greenhouse gases causes an
overall rise in global temperatures. A forest ecologist, Miles Silman along with his

Gryphus vitreus, like all brachiopods, is a sessile animal which lacks a distinct head. This species appears to be simple
from a morphological viewpoint but does still possess some complex features, for example; it has no organs of
locomotion but does possess a simple heart and a nephridia, which is its excretory organ. Despite this, this brachiopod
has a small mass of nerve cells which comprise the 'brain' as it were, that controls metabolic activities and sensory
actions. The shell of G. Vitreus is strongly convex with strong radical edges externally and this species is only 4cm in
size (Coudre, Unknown). All brachiopod shells are composed of two separate parts known as valves. However,
contrastingly to other bivalve organisms, G. Vitreus' bilateral symmetry runs through the two valves and not between
them; the hinge line of this species is on the anterior of the organism. As with all brachiopods, Gryphus vitreus has an

Characterisation In Away By GowAway By Gow
With the will to search for new experiences and fresh perceptions of the world we live in, creates the ability for
individuals to overcome confronting challenges and provide gains through the journey of personal realization, new ideas
and acceptance of ourselves and who we truly are. This is represented through the play 'Away' composed by Gow that
addresses the contextual era of 1967 where the after effects of the great depression and the WW2 was huge and where a
high influx of migrants settled Australia. furthermore, these themes are exploited through William Shakespeare's
pastoral romance, 'the tempest' through the involvement of characters who undergo a fortuitous discovery of self.
Through newfound discoveries and contemporary ways of thinking, beliefs and identity have been altered and
transformed. In "Away", Gow's characterisation of tom and Coral exploit deep personal realisations. For Tom going

According to (Foundation, n.d.) most jellyfish feed on crustaceans (crayfish, shrimp), but many also consume plankton,
other invertebrates, fish eggs and larvae. Species that consume fish eggs and larvae can sometimes have an impact on
the human and other predator's food supply by causing low fish population levels. This can be extreme when large
swarms of jellyfish are present. Next, I will describe anthozoan ecology. Anthozoans are mostly found in reefs (shallow
regens in warm tropical oceans). According (Anon, n.d.) coral reefs consist of many cnidarians, they also say that coral
reefs are home to a large biodiversity. Coral reefs plays a role in breeding for many species. It is also said that
cnidarians can form symbiotic relationships with microorganisms such as algae. The algae lives in the coral body, they

The most common home that is developed has either a gable roof or a hip roof. A gable roof has a ridge in the center of
the roof and slopes downwards in two directions. This type is easy to develop and can be used for almost any type of

Effects of increasing carbon dioxide on coral reefs and the ecosystem services
Coral reefs are not just a bar of coral living beneath the surface of the water, but a diverse ecosystem with many food

which lives as an endosymbiont in the polyp tissue. Ecosystem services are what the Coral provides to its nearby
organisms and the physical environment. Coral's calcium carbonate shell is an outstanding example of this because not
only does it help to anchor and protect the coral from predation, it also provides protection and habitats to organisms
and the nearby coasts. Carbon dioxide affects the coral in two main ways, increasing global temperatures due to its
greenhouse properties, but also forming carbonic acid in the oceans causing ocean acidification.
Atmospheric carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps solar radiation in the atmosphere. This is done by
either absorbing or reflecting infra–red waves, thereby trapping them in the Earth's atmosphere for longer, contributing
to global warming. Rising sea surface temperature has a large effect on coral, due to their low range of tolerance of 23°–
29°Celsius. Large–scale bleaching events can occur from a temperature change as little as 1–2°Celsius (Brown 1997).
Bleaching is the loss of colour from the coral and can be due to two reasons, the symbiotic zooxanthellae plankton
either leave the coral

Essay On Amphibian Species

  • 1. Essay On Amphibian Species Britain is home to seven native amphibian species. Three newt species: great crested newt (Triturus cristatus), smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris), palmate newt (Lissotriton helveticus), two frog species: common frog (Rana temporaria), northern pool frog (Pelophylax lessonae) and two toad species: common toad (Bufo bufo) and natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita). The northern pool frog is only found at reintroduction sites in England whilst the others are found in England, Scotland and Wales (Baker, et al. 2011). All of the UK amphibian species are globally listed as least concern on the IUCN red list but have seen declines within the country (Buckley & Beebee, 2004). Of the species in the UK, the natterjack toad, common toad, and great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As well as habitat loss, UK amphibian species suffer from disease and invasive species. Chytrid has been documented in all seven UK species however the impact of this pathogen is currently not understood (Cunningham & Minting, 2008). The Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex) and marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus) are considered to be of medium concern whilst the alpine newt (Icthyosaura alpestris) is considered to be of high concern, all due to the risk of competition, hybridization and disease, especially chytrid in alpine newts (Fisher & Garner, 2011). In the UK there are three amphibian species listed as European Protected Species under schedule 2 of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations (2010); the great crested newt, the natterjack toad and the northern pool frog. Under these regulations it is an offence to: kill, disturb, capture, possess, injure of trade individuals (at any life stage), or to damage or destroy the places they use for breeding (JNCC, 2010). Great crested newts are also covered by Annex II of the Habitats directive. This gives member states of the European Union the ability to designate suitable habitat as Special Areas of Concern (SAC). Under this same act, member states also have the ability to designate sites as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), these tend to be habitats with either exceptional numbers of great crested newts or a large variety of more prevalent species ... Aurora Ephraim, a senior majoring in Physics, committed suicide at her dorm, March 15, 2015. Her memorial ceremony was hold on March 26 at the physical department. Unfortunately, the suicide of Ephraim isn't the first at UM. Frederik Westerberg, a University of Copenhagen exchange student, was studying molecular biology at UM and had been enrolled at the university for only one semester. Westerberg took his life on Dec. 17, 2014, right after final exams. According to the Miami Hurricanes Newspaper, a representative of the family said, "He just wrote that he was really tired, and exhausted, and he wanted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, finding the balance between respecting the students privacy and obeying the state order may also be a conflict for the counseling center. Danny Renato, an international student from Peru, has been to the counseling center for several times. " The top mission for the counseling center on campus is keeping their students' safety, so after a couple times I talk to my doctor about "suicide", they told me if I keep the dangerous idea, they would contact hospitals," said Danny, "I know their dilemma, but I just have much pressure when I knew I would be hospitalized. Then I tried to digest the bad feeling by myself." This past September, University of Miami staff, students and community came together to participate in spreading suicide awareness by taking part in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's "Walk out of the Darkness." According to the University of Miami's webpage, with more than 39,500 lives lost to suicide this year, this walk is relevant to thousands of people in the University of Miami's community and it's clear that UM is eager to get the word ... As a member of the phylum ctenophora, Bolinopsis infundibulum, or commonly known as the Common Northern Comb Jelly, possess the characteristic eight rows of fused cilia that stretch laterally across its sides (Waggoner et al., 1995.) These rows of cilia assist in swimming and are usually referred to as 'combs,' which is where the common name for this organism derives from Gelatinous tissue, which is 95% water constitutes the oblong body of the Bolinopsis infundibulum; this is a major impediment for researchers as whenever they attempt to obtain samples of this organism the body mostly disintegrates (Hopcroft, 2008.) • 7. Creative Writing: Lelia's Suicide Honestly, malicious gossip couldn't have been further from the truth; it's just how it is in a small town. Like Samuel's father, his grandfather had been a lawyer, and like Lelia's father, her grandfather had been a steamboat captain, nothing ever seemed to change. Lelia had sat at the same desk where her teacher sat when she had been Lelia's age, attending the same high school. Frankly, in the tiny town of Cutler Harbor, Maine there were no secrets and no mysteries lurking anywhere. For Lelia, the appeal of Owen remained the mystery and intrigue, not the handsome man himself. True, Lelia flirted with Owen as she had with William Randall, III the year before. However, her heart belonged to Samuel Truman, and she had hoped he'd be asking for her hand in marriage before he left ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Gosh, Mother," Lelia said, standing on the checker kitchen floor, kicking her right foot at nothing. "He'll be gone and I won't see him until Thanksgiving." Three months could seem a lifetime at Lelia's age. "Lelia Elizabeth, stop arguing and listen." Marion placed her hands on her daughter's shoulder. "I said, yes. Yes, you may take the bus with Sam over to Ellingwood to see him off." Samuel gazed pensively at Lelia, her soft, slate–blue eyes appeared dreamier than usual when she gazed up at him. With his heart beating faster than usual, Sam thought he felt Lelia faintly trembling. Taking a step back so he could study her intently, he tried to sound convincing when he whispered: "Hey, come on now, it'll be okay." He wiggled from one foot to the other. Facing her, Sam tightly intertwined his fingers around Lelia's white– gloved fingers. The couple stood with their eyes locked, searching one another's soul. If you ask a surfer what a reef is, they would probably say something that gets in my way while surfing. Reefs being either large or small, have grown for over thousands of years. The build–up of limestone or calcite have given way to magnificent structures that many marine animals call home (Science). Reefs are communities in the ocean where more than hundreds of different ocean species live (Moran). These reefs in the ocean become a community that live alongside each other which allows them to grow. These reefs are similar to Caribbean reefs in that the fast growth rate of the hermatypic corals. Also like other reefs, rays, sharks, sea turtles and over 300 different invertebrates inhabit the reefs here in the Gulf of Mexico. Boulder star coral and brain coral are two main types of coral. The current from the south brings warm Caribbean water that moves through the gulf loop. It can move as far inland as Louisiana or parts of the loop break away to form eddies that bring animal larvae, plant spores that count for many of the Caribbean species found in the Gulf (Service, flowergarden.noaa.gov/about/natrualsetting.htm;#domes). Since the water temperature does cool during the winter month's hermatypic coral do not survive close to the coastline in the Gulf of Mexico. The sandy ocean bottom is what impedes coral from growing in this ocean water as well. However, there are formations that have occurred that the coral have discovered. • 11. Gold Coast Drivers Case Study Problem Statement How can Gold Coast drivers contribute to the sustainability of the Great Barrier Reef whilst idling in traffic congestion? Gold Coast vehicle owners are currently faced with concerns relating to the amount of carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere whilst idling in traffic congestion. This is highlighted through their daily, lengthy car journeys caused by the increase in population. Although these carbon emissions have a direct impact on the immediate environment it is also contributing to the decline of coral growth on the Great Barrier Reef. Situated along the Queensland coastline the Great Barrier Reef stretches 2,300km from the north of Bundaberg to the tip of northern Queensland, making it the largest living structure in the world (Zell, 2012). The threat of ocean acidification from carbon emissions whilst idling in traffic congestion on the Gold Coast is contributing to the pH balance in the ocean to become more acidic ... The Australian Government and the Queensland Government are working in partnership to fund projects and apply laws that will sustain this World heritage area. These projects include the Green Climate Fund which targets emissions reduction and the $2.55 billion pledge towards the Emissions Reduction Fund which creates positive incentives to cut emissions (Commonwealth of Australia, 2015). Dr. Lenny makes this incision in one of four areas: Close to the armpit, where the arm and the chest meet (tranaxiallary) Just above the crease beneath the breast (inframammary) In the navel (transumbilical) Around the base of the areola, which is the dark area that surrounds the nipple (periareolar) Once the incision is created, Dr. Lenny creates a pocket by gently lifting the breast tissue. This action makes the pocket for the breast implant. The breast implant is placed within the newly created pocket. The type of implant (silicone, saline or gummy bear) and the size of the implant is determined by Dr. • 15. Essay about Symbols and Symbolism in The House of the... Symbolism in The House of the Seven Gables American literature reflects life and the struggles faced during existence. Symbols are an eloquent way for an author to create a more fully developed work of art. The stories themselves tell a tale; however, an author also uses symbols to relay his message in a more subtle manner. Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the earliest authors to use symbols as an integral part of his plots. This is clearly seen in both The Scarlet Letter and in The House of the Seven Gables. The use of symbols causes an "association psychology" to enter into the story, making it more intriguing.1 In Nathaniel Hawthorne's romance The House of the Seven Gables, symbolism is used eloquently to enhance the story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The house is an old wooden building that is rotting away but still is a good enough quality to withstand some of the test of time. The house is referred to as a prison by Hawthorne; he calls Hepzibah and Clifford inmates. The house is a prison because it prevents the inhabitants from truly enjoying any freedom. The inmates attempt an escape from their prison twice. Initially, as Phoebe and Clifford watch the parade of life in the street, Clifford realizes that his life has become meaningless, and he cannot help but try to join the masses below. This could mean the only way for Clifford to become truly reunited with mankind is through death. Unfortunately, Clifford fails to win his freedom and returns to the solace of his prison. The second attempt at escape is by Clifford and Hepzibah. They attempt to escape the clutches of the house, but, alas, it is too late for them. The house has affected them too much to stay away. This is apparent when Hepzibah and her brother made themselves ready– as ready as they could in the best of their old–fashioned garments, which had hung on pegs, or had been laid away in trunks, so long that the dampness and mouldy smell of the past was on them– made themselves ready in their faded bettermost, to go to church. They descended the staircase together...pulled open the front door, and stepped across the threshold, and felt, both of them, as if they were standing in the presence of the whole ... • 17. Informative Essay On Coral Reefs In the news reporters often talk about the effects of global warming as if they are anywhere from five to one–hundred years off in the future. Those dangers like unpredictable and catastrophic weather patterns may not pose a major threat to human populations yet. However, for the inhabitants of earth's coral reefs, the planet's constant warming immediately endangers thousands of species. While coral reefs occupy only a small fraction of the ocean's floor, they account for roughly one fourth of the world's marine life. Coral itself, which in large part comprises coral reefs is made up of thousands of tiny polyps that cling together and secrete a hard outer coating binding the individual polyps together (Jaap, 212–213). Generally coral make up the vast majority of all reefs, but soft bodied organisms like anemones litter the sea bed as well. Coral reefs' seemingly eternal balance with man is now in jeopardy, as small things like clownfish infertility and massive coral population loss begin to snowball, eventually leading to human casualties. These vibrant structures made up of millions of years of development do not face potential threats from global warming. The existing threats are imminent. As mentioned, sea anemones accompany coral on the bottom of the earth's enormous seas. While this may be true, anatomically they are greatly different from hard bodied corals. They cling to rocks on the seabed using the bottom of their bodies, Their pedal disc, which functions a lot ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Climate Change And Ocean Acidification In The Ocean It doesn't take more than a glance at the news to notice an article related to climate change. I think that most people in the United States are aware of climate change, but many choose to blow it off as something of little importance. One of the areas where climate change is most impactful is in our oceans. Entire ecosystems of our oceans are changed when molecules like carbon dioxide are added into the mix. Carbon dioxide is a killer in the world's oceans. Not only does this molecule acidify the ocean, but it also has direct consequences on many types of coral and sea plant life. Acidification of planet earth's seas affects all living organisms under water. I think it is time to address some of the issues that climate change and ocean acidification bring to earth's healthy oceans and discuss possible ways to cut carbon emissions. Acidification and warming oceans are problematic. Dana Ehlert (2017) says "Recent literature has shown an approximately linear relationship between global warming and cumulative CO2 emissions." (Ehlert, 2017) Humans have been adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere largely through burning fossil fuels. Waters states that "Most of this CO2 collects in the atmosphere and, because it absorbs heat from the sun, creates a blanket around the planet, warming its temperature. But some 30 percent of this CO2 dissolves into seawater." (Waters, 2016) If we do not work to stop carbon emissions, oceans will continue to lower in pH and many marine creatures ... • 23. The Sixth Exinoction In Elizabeth Kolbert's Sixth Extinction Elizabeth Kolbert mentioned the idea and evidence that a "sixth extinction" is at its beginning phase. In the last half– billion years, life on Earth has been nearly wiped out five times, these events are known as the Big Five mass extinctions, and all signs suggest we are now on the brink of a sixth. Except this time, we have no one but ourselves to blame. Us as humans are causing another mass extinction. Elizabeth Kolbert, throughout her book, The Sixth Extinction, has proven with sufficient evidence that we are causing the beginning of a new sixth extinction. Scientists say that the number of species that have gone extinct in the last century should have taken between 800 and 10,000 years to disappear. Why is this occurring? Because of us humans and Kolbert provides multiple species in her book to explain it. One of these species is the Great Auk ( Pinguinus Impennis), They were numbered in millions, from Norway to Florida to Italy. They were like penguins however, they lived in a different family than them. Very quickly did they go extinct due to the way humans used them. The Great Auk were hunted and killed with clubs. As stated by Kolbert they were "salted, plucked, and fried into oblivion" (Kolbert 62). This is just a small description of what they actually endured. They were eaten, used for fish bait, and even more morbidly they were used for fire kindling because the oil in their feathers kept a fire going for long periods of time. But throughout history there have been many ways to improve our life spans from medicine to surgery, But so far there have only been legends of ways to make yourself live for ever. How ever one really real way of doing this is in the Mediterranean sea and it's a blob of jelly. The Turritopsis Dohrnii is a jellyfish that can live forever. Other than the ability to live for ever it's really not that special. Having up to 90 tentacles only 4.5mm in width it's smaller than your fingernail. It was discovered in the Mediterranean Sea, but has been in areas as far away as japan. It's mostly transparent, except for it's red stomach. What it does is when it's injured, hungry or stressed it brings its tentacle up into itself and turns its cells to that of a sexualy imature polyp. During my time at Coral Gables Senior High School, Alex Bazzi, a classmate, won first place in the Future Business Leader of America (FBLA) national competition in network design, which inspired me to pursue the path of network design and to also compete in the FBLA's competitions thus resulted in making me a state level winner. In return to Alex Bazzi's inspiration I would like to leave a similar legacy as to be a figure of achievement in which underclassmen will not look at my achievements and strive to be me but to look at me and realize I was just a regular student in the class who took a chance and tired something as all it took for me to win was realizing I was capable of winning if I tired. • 31. The Benefits Of Biorock : Saving The Coral Reefs "The Benefits of Biorock: Saving the Coral Reefs from CO2" By E. Grace Najera GT Chemistry 18 May 2015 Period 1B Most people when hearing about greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide think of global warming, the ozone layer being destroyed, burning of fossil fuels, and the heating of the atmosphere; however, not many relate it to the ocean and the coral reefs. With the climate changing due to the increasing amount of carbon dioxide, ocean acidification is increasing and as a result coral reefs are at stake of being destroyed. Biorock is one of the most innovative solutions to start reversing this crisis and move towards reducing the ocean's acidification with the added benefit of saving the coral reefs. Oceans cover about 70% of the earth's surface. For millions of years, the sea has been responsible for absorbing most of the carbon dioxide in the air. In fact, oceans absorb about one–third or 22 million tons a day of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. On the other hand, as people have further developed their technology, developing cars with the combustion of gasoline, manufacturing goods involving factories and burning coal, additional greenhouse gases have been released. The advancements have come at a price having the oceans absorb more carbon dioxide than customary. In fact, before scientist started seeing ocean acidification as a threat, it was believed that the ocean's capacity to absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere was limitless. • 33. Effects Of Ocean Acidification Ocean acidification will not only have a negative effect on the environment, but also the global economy. The issues found with ocean acidification in the previous section of the paper correlate with the effects of ocean acidification on the economy. Marine life forms, most of which will suffer from lower pH levels, are a large part of temperate and tropical costal regions' economies. If ocean acidification is left as is, the world will start to see declines in various marine life's population. This would spell disaster for costal economies that largely depend on fishing as a reliable commodity. Inland economies are also at risk since most likely import seafood to their local restaurants. Another aspect of the economy to factor into the equation is tourism. With potential decline in marine life populations, including coral reefs, the tourism sector would likely see a decline in tourist with the continual increase in ocean acidification. Dying reefs and less marine life would deteriorate from what makes visiting costal areas worth the trip. In addition, if no action is taken to combat ocean acidification, costal areas could potentially become political hotspots for environmental protestors, therefor making the area less desirable for a vacation spot. While the temperate and tropic zone economies will suffer, studies show that the artic region will see an increase in productivity under predicted pH levels and ocean temperatures. One study in particular estimates a 39% ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Effect On Ocean Acidification Ocean acidification is a harmful, but important process in the ocean, it occurs when carbon dioxide is released into the ocean causing a reduction in the hydrogen. The process of ocean acidification happens underwater, and creates carbonic acid, which increases acidity in sea water ecosystems. Ocean acidification is causing climate change in the oceans and almost all saltwater environments. According to the article Interactive Oceans, "Increasing levels of carbon dioxide, however, are outstripping the absorptive abilities of the oceans and are causing climate change." This evidence shows that the increase of carbon which is happening from the process of ocean acidification is causing the climate of oceans and the atmosphere to change. I predict that the impacts of human activity on ocean acidification will increase. Humans activity of fossil fuel combustion is causing carbon to be added into the environment and into oceans. Shown in the article Ocean Acidification: The Other CO2 Problem, "But all signs indicate that unless humans are able to control and eventually eliminate our fossil fuel emissions, ocean organisms will find themselves under increasing pressure to adapt to their habitat's changing chemistry or perish." This text shows that human activity has a great impact on ocean acidification in saltwater ecosystems, because the use of deforestation and fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide. A solution to the impacts of human activity on ocean acidification is to reduce ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. The Effects Of Global Warming On The World Global warming is the term used to describe the rise in the Earth's temperature observed over the last century. It has had significant effects on the polar ice caps, as the rising temperature is causing them to melt. It has also been linked to rising sea levels as the rise has been quicker than ever recorded in the last century. It is believed to be caused by increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, due to burning fossil fuels, other human activities and volcanic activity. It also doesn't help that most of the world's forests are being cut down to be used for wood and other materials, this means those plants can no longer photosynthesise and get rid of some of the CO2 (which is a greenhouse gas) from the atmosphere. The rising temperatures therefore have significant effects on the Earth and its organisms. The most imminent and noticeable threat is that on the organisms which live in polar habitats, such as polar bears and penguins, because of the melting ice caps it means that their habitats are being destroyed. There has been a noticeable decline in the numbers of Adélie penguins on Antarctica, their numbers have gone down from 32,000 breeding pairs to 11,000 breeding pairs in the last 30 years. Over the last 40 years there has been a fall in the population of polar bears, their status has changed from least concern to vulnerable to endangered. Polar bears use drifting ice to catch prey and if there is no ice left then their eating habits will decrease ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The arch is riddled with corals, it's crowned with a particularly large SPS colony at least a foot tall known as a green slimmer. It was given this name because when removed from the water it will excrete a thick, snot like mucus to protect its delicate polyps. Polyps are the individual animals that make up the coral colony. They are essentially a round animal with a mouth in the middle and a ring of tentacles around the mouth. The tentacles possess stinging cells (called nematocysts) and can be used to sting, paralyze, and catch prey. They also share a communal skeleton that is made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The calcium carbonate is collected from the water column, and in a closed system (like a fish tank) this must be dosed daily. Proper levels of calcium and alkalinity are essential for overall health of the reef. The left side of the aquascape is separated from the right by a deep chasm, or crevasse if you prefer, in the rockwork. It's dominated by SPS corals. The black corals retain these elements because the feeding matter they take in is exported organic matter from the surface ocean. Rivers then transported soluble ReO4 into the ocean. Algae uptake the Re and upon death the algae sinks to the bottom where the Re is taken in by the black corals. The half life can then be used to determine ocean circulation much like the radiocarbons. The lecture given by Dr. Roark has tied together multiple topics that we've discussed in class this semester. The biggest correlation I made from his lecture was the introduction of Re into the ocean from the Mississippi River. Rivers are one of the biggest sources of detritus and they bring in a lot of nutrients from decaying organic materials that enter the river. Dr. Roark said he was surprised to see Re in the coral samples, but it makes since if coal mines were located close to the banks of rivers. Much like the corals that are taking in this rare transition metal, organisms such as oysters can also be taking in elements such as radiocarbons and Re. Pollution in the ocean is a huge problem and it has occurred in many topics we've discussed. Dr. Roark mentioned POM's (pieces of organic material) several times and how these elements are being taken in by organisms at the bottom of the food chain. This relates to the diagram of Mr. Cat that we discussed in class and how a 10 pound cat would have to eat 100 pounds of tuna and the tuna would have to eat 1,000 pounds of mackerel and so on. • 53. Climate Change And Global Warming A lot of attention has been focused on the impacts of climate change and global warming on forests, farms, freshwater sources and the economy. But what has climate change and global warming done to the ocean and the creatures that live in the ocean? Earth 's oceans have been contaminated with pollution and global warming/climate change. "When Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago there were no oceans. Since then, as surface water has accumulated, the filling ocean basins have been the reaction chamber for the development of life on Earth and have played a fundamental role in the ongoing evolution of the planet 's climate(Brierly et al)." A fully grown Dead Man's Fingers colony can be up to 20 mm. They can appear to be orange or pink, but from July to December, they become inactive and develop a brownish color. When it becomes dormant, it finishes the development of the gonads. When it is time for them to reproduce, it is done externally. Each colony is either male or female, but occasionally there is a colony that is hermaphroditic. The coral is usually mature after two years and can then start to reproduce. • 61. The Fourth Extinction : An Unnatural History By Elizabeth... There have been five major mass extinction on earth triggered by a distinguishable event, but in The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History, Elizabeth Kolbert writes of the narrative of the sixth extinction caused directly by human impact. The book identifies the effects of human activity on how, over humans history on earth, the natural world has been affected. Every environmental impact stems into three basic groups of global problems to nature: Pollution, Habitat loss and Invasive Species. Kolbert explains that each impact can be traced back to one source, human industrial development. With each impact various types of life in the natural world are affected. Deforestation, urbanization, and sea level rise contribute to habitat loss worldwide. When humans began to travel they also brought invasive species and disease along with them; as boats only became bigger more and more invasive species travel. This reverse engineering of the planet species, brings new species that don't have any natural predators, thus having an easier time driving native species out to endangerment or extinction. The different outcomes that come from human pollution is separated throughout the book, but the idea remains constant; with the development of human culture, pollution has drastically impacted a vast extent of species habitats and their environment. Humans pollution of greenhouse gases causes an overall rise in global temperatures. A forest ecologist, Miles Silman along with his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Gryphus Vitreus Research Paper Gryphus vitreus, like all brachiopods, is a sessile animal which lacks a distinct head. This species appears to be simple from a morphological viewpoint but does still possess some complex features, for example; it has no organs of locomotion but does possess a simple heart and a nephridia, which is its excretory organ. Despite this, this brachiopod has a small mass of nerve cells which comprise the 'brain' as it were, that controls metabolic activities and sensory actions. The shell of G. Vitreus is strongly convex with strong radical edges externally and this species is only 4cm in size (Coudre, Unknown). All brachiopod shells are composed of two separate parts known as valves. However, contrastingly to other bivalve organisms, G. Vitreus' bilateral symmetry runs through the two valves and not between them; the hinge line of this species is on the anterior of the organism. As with all brachiopods, Gryphus vitreus has an epithelial lining of the shell known as the mantle which encloses the internal organs, creating an internal mantle cavity. The cavity is split into the inhalant and exhalant chambers, where the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The anchoring of G. Vitreus is achieved by the formation of a pedicle structure which develops during the larval stage when it settles on its substrate, usually pebbles or rocks, where one of the three larval stages will develop into the pedicle (Karleskint, et al, 2009). This pedicle is a stalk like projection that develops from the pedicle foramen on the posterior of the shells exterior, which forms root structures to help bind to the substrate. The chemical relationship is not fully understood but it is known that it is of an extremely strong nature; so much so that it is easier to remove the pedicle from the shell of Gryphus Vitreus than from the substrate itself (Rudwick, ... Characterisation In Away By GowAway By Gow With the will to search for new experiences and fresh perceptions of the world we live in, creates the ability for individuals to overcome confronting challenges and provide gains through the journey of personal realization, new ideas and acceptance of ourselves and who we truly are. This is represented through the play 'Away' composed by Gow that addresses the contextual era of 1967 where the after effects of the great depression and the WW2 was huge and where a high influx of migrants settled Australia. furthermore, these themes are exploited through William Shakespeare's pastoral romance, 'the tempest' through the involvement of characters who undergo a fortuitous discovery of self. Through newfound discoveries and contemporary ways of thinking, beliefs and identity have been altered and transformed. In "Away", Gow's characterisation of tom and Coral exploit deep personal realisations. For Tom going away on holiday allows for him to make sense of what is happening and reflect on life, his realisation is not on the issue of dying the realisation is on living, and this realisation is made through watching people in his lives and how they waste time and he starts to change his belief that, in fact, it might not be a curse but a privilege as he has meaning in his life and a purpose to live. Corals self–realization is composed through the introduction of new characters she can communicate with and hear other people's stresses. these aid her in the realisation it is ok for a ... • 71. Frogspawn Coral Research Paper Human beings are always searching for ways to reach a peaceful and tranquil environment. One great way to reach this is to have a hobby. Most will find that the hobby of saltwater aquariums can be very helpful to distress; however, it can also be useful as a profitable investment through the harvesting of coral. In doing so, many gain the skill of patience. There are many different varieties of coral, each varying in structure. There are Four classes of species of coral, each has its own method of harvesting. One species of coral is LPS and SPS, which means large–polyp stoney and small– polyp stoney. Aquarists write articles informing people about the structure of frogspawn coral, " they are LPS corals that develop multiple branching heads connected to a single trunk like structure" (Gosnell, 82). Frogspawn is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before harvesting, one must wear safety goggles and gloves, to protect on from the toxins shot from the coral. If the toxin enters into an open orifice or cut, one must call medical personnel immediately. To begin the procedure of harvesting, one will need bone cutters, frag plugs, super glue gel, pipet, plastic container, and Coral R–X. First, one must take a specimen of Frogspawn coral out of the water of the tank. Second, one must take the bone cutters and cut an inch and a half to two inches from the poly to the trunk like structure of the frogspawn coral. He or she must make sure it is a clean cut. If it is not a clean cut the individual can trim the base with the bone cutters. Third, one must take the frag plug, super glue gel, pipet and the harvested coral fragment. One must take the super glue gel and add a dollop of it to the center of the frag plug. Next, One must take the frag plug and place the dollop of super glue to the trunk like structure of the frogspawn coral. He or she must hold pressure, while using the pipet to shoot saltwater onto the drying super glue gel. This hardens the hold. Now ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Difference Between Polyp And Medusa Introduction In this practical assignment I will discuss what are the morphological differences between a polyp and medusa and how does the respective morphology affect the ecology of these body forms. I will construct a hypothesis, write down my results, I will have a discussion and there after a conclusion. My hypothesis I that morphological differences between polyp and medusa will give them different ecological roles. Discussion According to (Miller and Harley, 2016, p157) many cnidarians have two body forms, namely polyp and medusa. Polyps are usually sessile, they attach to substrates like rocks at their aboral end (the end furthest form the mouth). They have a cylindrical body shape, they do not possess gonads, while cnidarians are in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to (Foundation, n.d.) most jellyfish feed on crustaceans (crayfish, shrimp), but many also consume plankton, other invertebrates, fish eggs and larvae. Species that consume fish eggs and larvae can sometimes have an impact on the human and other predator's food supply by causing low fish population levels. This can be extreme when large swarms of jellyfish are present. Next, I will describe anthozoan ecology. Anthozoans are mostly found in reefs (shallow regens in warm tropical oceans). According (Anon, n.d.) coral reefs consist of many cnidarians, they also say that coral reefs are home to a large biodiversity. Coral reefs plays a role in breeding for many species. It is also said that cnidarians can form symbiotic relationships with microorganisms such as algae. The algae lives in the coral body, they photosynthesis and produce oxygen and other substances which the coral can use as nutrients. Finally, I will describe hydrozoan ecology. According (Foundation, n.d.) hydrozoans live in almost all aquatic environments. Many polyps form symbiotic relationships with microorganisms (algae) that live inside them or with larger organisms such as crustaceans (crabs, lobsters, shrimps etc.) they are ... Ab House Construction In South Dakota there are several codes and regulations that are specific for the climate and geographic features in that state. most of the codes south dakota uses are part of the international codes. But, the state and towns can add to the codes if they feel necessary. (2015 international codes council, inc). There are several systems that the homeowner needs to follow to build a house correctly in South Dakota. Including, foundation, venting, interior walls, and ceilings, exterior walls and roofs, etc. After reading my essay the homeowner will learn the concept of how to build a legal home in South Dakota that goes by code and is precisely developed. When starting a building the first process the homeowner should put together is the foundation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most common home that is developed has either a gable roof or a hip roof. A gable roof has a ridge in the center of the roof and slopes downwards in two directions. This type is easy to develop and can be used for almost any type of building. Gable roofs look like an "A" after constructed. Hip roofs are different than gable roofs. A hip roof had four sides that go down in each direction connecting to the top of the wall.(Constructionknowledge.com) Building a hip roof will use more materials and increase time. When constructing the roof you wanna end in the center and start on the top of the walls. When constructing the exterior part of the roof there are numerous ways to do it. There's asphalt shingle, slate, metal roofing, and much more. Slate roofs are individual smooth flat pieces that of rock that come in colors such as gray, red, green, and more. Although slate roofs are very durable and fire–resistant they are also very expensive and heavy.(By Jeannie Matteucci, top 6 roofing materials) The most commonly used exterior roofing method in North America is asphalt shingling. It is an inexpensive and fairly easy to install method. There are two ways asphalt shingles are made. Either an organic–base or a fiber–glass base. The organic–base shingles are made from recycled woods fragments or waste paper. This kind of shingle is more durable and is extremely good. Also, it is better for the cold ... • 77. The Effects Of Increasing Carbon Dioxide On Coral Reefs... Effects of increasing carbon dioxide on coral reefs and the ecosystem services Coral reefs are not just a bar of coral living beneath the surface of the water, but a diverse ecosystem with many food webs and inter–species relationships. Coral itself has a complex symbiotic relationship between polyp and zooplankton which lives as an endosymbiont in the polyp tissue. Ecosystem services are what the Coral provides to its nearby organisms and the physical environment. Coral's calcium carbonate shell is an outstanding example of this because not only does it help to anchor and protect the coral from predation, it also provides protection and habitats to organisms and the nearby coasts. Carbon dioxide affects the coral in two main ways, increasing global temperatures due to its greenhouse properties, but also forming carbonic acid in the oceans causing ocean acidification. Atmospheric carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps solar radiation in the atmosphere. This is done by either absorbing or reflecting infra–red waves, thereby trapping them in the Earth's atmosphere for longer, contributing to global warming. Rising sea surface temperature has a large effect on coral, due to their low range of tolerance of 23°– 29°Celsius. Large–scale bleaching events can occur from a temperature change as little as 1–2°Celsius (Brown 1997). Bleaching is the loss of colour from the coral and can be due to two reasons, the symbiotic zooxanthellae plankton either leave the coral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
