My Role Model In My Life
Most life changing events happen with someone whom you truly trust. It is easy to ignore people,
withdraw, and not form relationships built on love and reliance. I have truly grown closer to my
role model in my life. Matt Harp, my role model, is a man of truth, integrity, love, selflessness, and
compassion. Many different times he surprised me with how he acted, spoke and thought. I clearly
saw the Lordlead his life, and his actions revealed as much. I wanted to follow his example. He
led me through junior high, what was definitely the toughest part of my life. Looking back, I can
only imagine what would have happened in my life if I had not grown to trust this honorable
man. There are many different times where Matt taught me a life lesson, but these three are the
most prominent. He taught me how to be unique, be yourself, always be willing to share, and to
never give up, even when you are tired. As a groovy guy, my small group leader always wore
what the coolest clothes. I loved to talk to him about it. I said I love your style. Where do you
buy your clothes? Many different times, I wore similar clothes to him. I started wearing unique
socks, colored jeans, and many other things. He took more notice than I realized. One day he
took me aside and said You don t have to live exactly like someone else, you just need to be you.
He insisted, saying don t just copy me because you like the way that I dress, find your own groove.
I took these small statements to heart.

Essay about Influential Poets of the Beat Generation
The Beat Generation of poets was created by a group of poets in the 1950s that were part of a
new culture in literature. They chose to use their experiences in their writings which were widely
criticized as well as loved by many readers. Two of the most influential Beat Poets of that
Generation of writers were Allen Ginsbergand Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The Beat Generationpoetry
was the first poets to write about non conventional subjects as well as using different forms of
expression in their works. This generation of poets greatly influenced poets such as Anne Sexton,
who wrote about personal experiences as well. The Beat Generation s style of poetry have
influenced many generations of poets after them.

The Beat Generation is characterized as a group of poets after World War II, they are widely
known and recognized for their works because it is not only well documents but also because they
inspired many future generation of writers. The elements of the Beat Generation s poetry are drugs,
sexuality, religion centering on the Eastern World, rejection of materialism and freedom of
expression. The members of this movement were known as non conformists and were
spontaneously creative in their writings. Thomas Merrill states that the influence of drugs in the
movement was:
The incessant search for reality within (through drugs, meditation and intense feeling) was a quest
for authenticity that reason, it was felt, deadened. It called for the reconnaissance at the extremes
of human experience, as far beyond the limits of reason as possible, thus placing uncommon stress
upon subjunctive moods. (Merrill, 2) Influences of the Beat Movement can be noted in the next
phase of American History: Hippie counter culture of the 1960s. The Beat Generation was an
important political catalyst for those minorities that had no voice. The beatniks of the movement
were seen as a threat by those Americans that lived in the typical suburbs of American who tried to
raise their children in morally upright ways (Silesky, 81). Two of the most influential people of the
Beat Generation were Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti. The East and West Coast

Comparing Poems The Bloody Sire And Into Battle
The poems The bloody Sire by Robinson Jeffers and Into Battle by Julian Grenfell both deal with
the concepts of war and violence. Both poems use nature as a literary device to help tell the
story. In Into Battle Grenfell uses owls that tell the narrator be swift and keen as they / as keen
of ear, as swift of sight (25 26). A blackbird also tells him if this be the last song you shall sing,
/ sing well, for you may not sing another (28 29). This is foreshadowing as well as personification
as the animals are warning him that he may die by giving him advice, such as the owls, or by
telling him to sing for the last time as the blackbird did because it is his last night alive. It is also
personification because birds cannot talk to humans.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Violence ends Into Battle by the person either dying or by living. This can be seen when
Grenfell wrote he is dead who will not fight , meaning if you do not fight hard during the battle
you will be killed and the violence has ended for you (7). Grenfell also put when fighting shall be
done, / great rest, and fulness after dearth showing that if you live through the battle and it is
over you can live the rest of your life (13 14). In The Bloody Sire there is always violence. Jeffers
writes It is not bad. Let them play. / Let the guns bark and the bombing plane / speak his
prodigious blasphemies (1 3). In the world of this poem playing is equal with guns and bombing
planes and that violence should be encouraged at a young age because that is what rules the world.
Jeffers also writes Stark violence is still the sire of all the world s values and every ending line in
the stanzas is some form of violence with ...sire of all the world s values ; with the exception of the
last line which is Old violence is not to old to beget new values (5, 10, 15, 17). This is saying that
violence is what rules the world and everyone s

Symbolism In The Tortilla Curtain
In the novel The Tortilla Curtain, T. C. Boyle used different elements much like symbolism and
characterization to display an obscure theme throughout the novel that displayed a hypothetical
wall of one of the characters that was slowly getting torn down as the story progressed. In the
beginning of the novel, we are aware of the actual or real wall that is in progress of being built
around a housing community of Arroyo Blanco Estates. This wall is an example of a boundary to
keep those unwelcome out of the community. We notice at the beginning that Delaney has his own
views and opinions on the issues those within the community has seen. We see how he shows true
feelings in the beginning of caring for those who might be trespassing.... Show more content on

Beginning with Delaney hitting Candido on page three. Delaney has many emotions go
throughout his mind. As stated on page four, Delaney s first thought was for the car, we notice
that he is very much concerned about his car, but we see his thoughts quickly change to being
concerned for the man he had just hit. Delaney only wants to help him as shown on page seven.
Even with Candido refusing his help, Delaney feels bad and offers him $20. Throughout the
novel, we are able to see other conflicts that begin to allow characters emotions to break down
Delaney s hypothetical wall. During the middle of the novel, we see Jack trying to persuade
Delaney to see how there is no good that comes with immigration. For example on page 104 Jack
and Delaney get into an argumentative debate over their views of immigration. Delaney shows
how he believes immigrants should be given a chance and Jack thinks otherwise. Towards the end
of the argument between Jack and Delaney, we begin to see Delaney s hypothetical wall start to be

The Real World Consequences Of When Army Leaders Become...
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the real world consequences of when Army leaders
become complacent dealing with foreign national soldiers, and the day to day operations while in
a combat theatre. To gather lessons learned from the example discussed in order to lower the
probability of a reoccurrence among the force. Through the example demonstrate the need for
Army leaders to constantly fight against complacency, and the extreme importance that leaders
know their soldiers, and place their soldiers needs before their own. The scenario discussed was a
real incident that took place in Iraqin 2009, at a Coalition Outpost (COP) approximately 30
kilometers south of Mosul, in a city called Hammam al Alil.

We were an American COP right in the middle of an Iraqi Army complex. While conducting our
left seat/right seat rides with the MiTT team it was apparent that security was not a major concern
with them, which can hardly be surprising when you understand that they probable had a force
that at best constituted a squad sized element. I cannot honestly recall if they had anybody pulling
any type of security on the entrance of the COP or not. Once we finally took over the COP, we
ensured that there was a soldier pulling security at the entrance, along with another soldier
pulling radio guard in a Bradley about 25 meters behind his position. After a span of about 2 3
weeks, D Co 1 12 Cav (Armor) also moved into COP Scorpion, and we effectively became
attached to D Co for the rest of the deployment. With the numbers of the COPs occupants
swelling, the mission tempo began to increase, but our security measures, by and large stayed the
same, with one man on the gate. It wasn t long for the company to get settled into the COP and the
platoons used to the mission tempo of daily conducting mounted and dismounted presence patrols,
humanitarian aid missions, and census gathering. For the first few months our AO remained very
calm. There was no direct fire from the enemy, and I don t recall there being many, if any,
improvised explosive devices (IED). If the other platoons came across any, they didn t cause any
battle damage to the vehicles. As any Army

Federalists Vs Anti Federalism Essay
Introduction: In this essay there will be a discussion of how the agreement of the production and
assembly of the U.S. Constitution formed the unindustrialized of two, opposite political parties, the
Federalists and Antifederalists. It will also touch on how the original thirteen colonies wanted to
ratify the U.S. Constitution and how one of these two groups made letters and political papers
public for all to read and understand. There will also be a discussion on how each contributed to
the formatting of America and some of the main players that were involved.
How do Federalists and Anti federalists plan to organize the federal government?
When looking at the Federalist verses the Anti Federalists there was a lot going on and it involved

The Federalists could reached across the nation with their points and messages unlike their
opponents. They felt as if there should be a check and balance within the government that would
allow the country to thrive and grow. They wanted to insure that the joining of all the nations as
one large country under a power that could be dispensed between multiple parties within itself;
therefore, not allowing too much control by any one group. While there were a lot of things that
could be viewed as not in favor of the commoner or the poor they were still the lesser of two evils.
They stood for that they felt was right not just for the nation but also for the everyday citizen
including the ones deemed to be only property.
Conclusion:
The time of the U.S. Constitution and Articles of Confederation was a time of death, passion, and
promises. The Federalists and the Anti Federalists wanted a lot of things that were similar, but didn
t know how to get them without debating, arguing, and compromising to the point of almost
uncomfortably. As the Alexander Hamilton wrote It is of great importance in a republic not only to
guard the society against the oppression of its rulers, but to guard one part of the society against the

Comparing War Poems Essays
Comparing War Poems Died of Wounds and Suicide in the Trenches are two poems, which I will
be comparing the similarities and differences, which were written by the same author. Both these
poems were written by a person called Siegfried Sasson, who wrote most of his poems during the
World War One, which outlined how bad the war was to those at home after suffering from being
Shell Shocked. I will be comparing the language it uses, ideas it contains and the way it is
structured between both poems, which Siegfried Sasson uses to demonstrate that war is evil, and
should be stopped. The theme in Died of Wounds is that soldiers become shell shocked and go
insane. They also suffer from mental and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the forth line of Died of Wounds the author says He did the business well where business is a
metaphor, for it is the earnest of the wounded solider to draw attention to himself. Also on the
last line of Died of Wounds the author describes dead soldier as a slight wound where he is
comparing a dead solider to a small wound, and therefore it does not matter, and he is also
comparing the country to a solider, which is hardly notices a slight wound. There is also some
similarity in Suicide in the Trenches where Siegfried Sasson describes the trenches as if it is
like hell meaning that war was like a place where young people went and got themselves killed.
On the first line of Died of Wounds, Siegfried Sasson wrote Wet White , which is alliteration,
which is a type of sound device. He also does this on the third line, ninth line and the last line. This
makes the poem sound better. There is also some similarity in Suicide in the Trenches, where the
author also uses this device to make the poem catchier but instead uses different letters to make it
sound different and better. There is also another similarity in both poems where there are no
assonances, which is the same as alliteration but it does not occur in consonants

Switching At Thomas County Central High School
I am a volleyball player who was denied eligibility to play varsity volleyball at Thomas County
Central High School, because I switched schools sooner than a year ago. I understand that you
along with the rest of the GHSA board care about students not taking advantage of switching
schools just to be on an eye catching sports team. As a player, I respect this and thank you for
keeping star athletes from taking mine or my team mates spots on the team. It is also
understandable that you along with other GHSA board members may not think about school
systems like ours that continuously have people switching primarily because of the rigor of
different school, such as me switching to TCCHS from Thomasville High SchoolScholars Academy,
because I simply could not keep up with the pace and rigor that they teach with. After weighing
out both points of view, transfers from any school should be allowed to participate in varsity
sports without having to wait a year from the time of transferring to their new school. My thought
out solution is to simply allow it, but have those athletes only be able to play half of the season.
The 50% that they get to play in the season would be talked out between the coach, athlete, and
the parents. Having this rule would be a good compromise between not allowing transfers to play
and allowing them. With this rule in place, athletes would be able to get in their time to stand out,
but they would not take away a lot of time from players who have

Hope In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, by Ken Kesey, Nurse Ratched thrives off of the
patients feelings of hopelessness. Hope plays the most important role in this novel as McMurphy
represents hope and Nurse Ratched represents its opposite, thus serving as the basis for the change
in perspective of the other patients. McMurphy is the embodiment of hope for the patients as he
challenges Nurse Ratchedand her strict hold of their freedom. This idea of hope is so foreign to
the patients that when he first arrives, he makes everybody over there feel uneasy, with all his
kidding and joking (17). The patients are so accustomed to their routine and position of degradation
that they continue to feel helpless even when McMurphy makes a bet

19th Century Prostitution
Across the 19th century the image of the prostitute and how she is portrayed in different novels
has evolved. While early depictions of a prostitute describe a woman who plagues society, later
portrayals offer a much more human and sympathetic view. Across many works of the 19th
century, there are several images of the prostitute that change overtime to reflect society s view
of these women. Between the character, Nana from Emile Zola s novel and Lulu from the silent
film Pandora s Box, there is visible evolution of the 19th century prostitute and her relationship to
society. Emile Zola s novel Nana offers a very negative and critical view of the prostitute in
French society. Zola s entire novel acts to criticize women like Nana for the disease... Show more

The prostitute Lulu, featured in the film Pandora s box offers a sympathetic mage of the
prostitute. The 1929 silent film is based off a set of plays called the Lulu plays from the late
19th century, and offers a more positive portrayal of a prostitute compared to earlier works from
the era. One aspect of Lulu that is not incorporated into the earlier 19th century image of a
prostitute is the prospect of marriage. Lulu is allowed to enter the upper class tier of life and does
so through marrying the Doctor. Allowing for a prostitute to be marry contradicts the early image
of an immoral woman that was associated with prostitutes like Nana. Along with this shift in
social status, Lulu is much more of a victim than earlier prostitutes like Nana were. By some
circumstances, Lulu is forced into prostitution by her father. Where prostitutes from the early 19th
century had always been the gross plague of society, with Lulu, she is a victim and a man (her
father) is shown to be the immoral character. This point is further supported by Lulu s death. While
most prostitutes from earlier works succumb to a disease of their own body, Lulu is murdered.
Again, Lulu is the victim not the cause of her suffering. The differences in the portrayal of Nana
and Lulu show an eveolution of the

Essay On Why Were The Colonists Justified In Declaring...
After the French and Indian War in 1763 the British government made many new laws,
agreements and taxes regulating all colonists which eventually led to the Revolutionary War.
There were several reasons why the revolution began and the colonists decided to separate from
Great Britain. Most colonists did not approve of the King because he ruled with tyranny. He was
unjust and did not listen to the input of the colonists. Others such as Loyalists, believed the King
s decisions were fair. Long before 1763, America was large in population and still growing. This
was because Great Britain had let the colonies solve problems on their own, govern themselves and
create their own elected assembly; which helped to create new laws and taxes. Colonists... Show

Both of these modern family cars are capable of putting Ferrari s from only twenty years ago to

everyday supercars but went about the process in differing ways. Understanding these differences is

The Golf R, being part of the Golf family of vehicles, is a 5 door hatchback while the current
generation Subaru STI, based on the Impreza, is only available as a 4 door sedan. This allows
the Volkswagen considerably more cargo space in the rear over the Subaru s trunk. The extra
room in the back gives the Volkswagen an edge in practicality without sacrificing performance.
Aesthetically both vehicles received changes to differentiate them from their lesser brethren.
Volkswagen gave the Golf R a redesigned front end, side sills, rear diffuser, larger wheels and an
integrated lip spoiler on the roof. These changes give the Golf a more aggressive look while still
remaining understated compared to the aggressive body styling of the STI. There is no
mistaking the Subaru for a regular Impreza sedan. The STI receives bold styling changes over
the Impreza, including a large hood scoop intake, massive rear wing, wider stance and completely
reworked body panels. These changes give the STI an aggressive appearance that is likely to catch
attention. Compared to the Subaru, the Volkswagen s appearance is restrained and sophisticated.
To someone unfamiliar with the Golf R it could easily be mistaken for a regular family hatchback
which is an important selling point for some and a detriment for others. Aesthetics are important but

Comparison Between Hard Rock And Postmodernism
Sociology Nate McDonald
Between a Hard Rock and Postmodernism 9/17/12
I. What is the sociological question?
What are the features of postmodern spaces? II. What is the analytical approach?
Borchard s approach at the opening of the Hard Rock was a participant observation approach.
Borchard wanted to get into the Hard Rock CafГ© the opening night is Las Vegas because he
wanted to part of the concert, and the once in a lifetime experience like everyone else in line.

The world is depending less and less on the individual and wants people to be more like society to
fit in and be how the bigger picture sees it, they want people to be seen as the famous people are
and rebel or look a certain way. If a normal man tried to get into the Hard Rock concert (like the
blonde man s friend) they were denied because their look wasn t right for the concert and
wouldn t be acceptable. Another man that Borchard talked to showed a way that society
changed. It s called a microwave relationship and that was when the man just opened up and told
Borchard his entire life story and he has never met the man before in his life. The man talked
about his whole crappy life to Borchard but he didn t care, he wasn t interested but this proved
another point of his. In the postmodern world people are becoming more and more open with
complete strangers. In result the things in the world weren t lasting people couldn t keep secrets

Persuasive Essay About Rugby
I believe that the old English sport, Rugby, should make it s big return in schools as it would help
spark a new passion for something that has faded away for almost 100 years since the last game
our country has ever won medals in this Olympic sport.
For years, Rugby has been a neglected sport in the United States until recently it is now the nation s
fastest growing sport with over 1.2 million registered participants across the country.
Rugby may not be that popular here in the United States of America as of now, but it is very
popular in Europe and some parts of Asia. Also, Rugby has been in a few major events like the
Olympics, making it an Olympic sport which was introduced into the Olympics in the year 1900,

There are players that joined from the fear of the dangers of American football and saw rugby as a
safer alternative to football, despite the few changes that made rugby the modern version which is
played today.
Rugby has many similarities as differences with American football like the pads and referee
which was stated before. Some similarities between the two are the lines of scrummage or most
commonly known in the united states as the line of scrimmage, where the two teams are face to
face with each other, the difference in football is that the ball is thrown backwards and then
given to the quarterback which can be thrown forward. In rugby the player number 9 rolls the
ball in the scrum where 8 players bind onto each other and push forward so the team hook can
use their leg to swipe the ball back towards their team where they can pass to the outside players,
known as wings, and those players can run downfield and score a try. In rugby a scrum consists
of the 8 forwards, such as props, a hooker, locks, flanks, and the 8 man. They push each other
forward to gain the ball, when the ball is in possession they can pass the ball

Religion In James Agee s A Death In The Family
Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some
people see religion as a helping hand, something that is meant to do good. Others see it as a
negative force used for evil and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter
whatsoever. One of the main themes in James Agee s novel is religionand the causes of it. In A
Death in the Family, the characters are very set in stone with their beliefs. While one character
turns to their religion for comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person s lack of beliefs as a
reason not to perform an act for their family. Throughout Agee s novel, religion is used as a
constructive force for some characters and destructive for other characters.

Father Jackson does not give his regards to the children or say his is sorry for what has

the sitting room which causes the children to stare at him. He does not even introduce himself to
the kids he just stares back them with such displeasure. He begins to lecture the kids about

scenarios, which reveal their distaste for the man. The more we read on, the more we see that
Father Jackson has different motives with his religion. Father Jackson is shown as a very close

refuses to complete Jay s burial service because Jay was never baptized. Instead of using religion
in a encouraging and positive way, Father Jackson uses his religious beliefs in a threatening and

Academic Dishonesty At Todays Education System
Academic Dishonesty in Todays Education System
One of the greatest concerns in schools is academic dishonesty. Over time cheating has increased
drastically for many reasons. As a result of this, institutions have had to enforce strict rules and
create honor codes to protect the integrity of their students. Although academic dishonesty has
several negative effects, students continue to cheat for reasons such as: unclear guidelines, pressure,
being overworked, and lack of effort.
Academic dishonesty takes numerous forms. It can vary from plagiarism to professional
misconduct. Due to this, the definition of what academic dishonesty is has become blurred for not
only students, but teachers as well. More often than not, students are not aware that what they are
doing qualifies as cheating. Colleges and universities do a poor job of educating their students and
instructors on what qualifies as cheating. Although most schools have honor codes in place to
protect their students integrity, the guidelines can lack clear boundaries and consistency. These
guidelines can also lack how instructors are to enforce these rules, leaving them without a clear
process to follow. This can lead to many accidental violations of the honor codes. It is important
institutions regularly reinforce the principles of academic dishonesty, so that students are aware
and can avoid such situations. This cause is less apparent than others, but transpires frequently in
schools everywhere. Grades rather than

What Was The Impact Of The Second World War Essay
The massive impact the second world war has had on the world can still be seen today. On the
70th anniversary of the end of World War II, one wonders what had caused it and what were the
effects of this conflict on the world. World War II was a terrible moment in human history,
however, the war has had positive effects such as the formation of the United Nations and the
economic boom in the United States. We should look back at history on the 70th anniversary of
the end of World War II with what we have gained from this war and the invaluable lesson it
taught. It has been seventy years since the closing of the Second World War. This war between
the Axis powers and Allies, which lasted from 1939 to 1945, left a definite mark on the world.
The amount of casualties from the war was the highest in any war in human history, with the death
toll going as high as 80 million. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, a five star general in the United
States Army, once said while visiting a nazi death camp, The world must know what happened, and

My Favorite Sports Essay example
Throughout this vast country we as Americans are entertained by many different things,
including movies, music, and sports. Although, there are many ways for me to be entertained, I
prefer the enjoyment of sports. As a youngster I enjoyed playing backyard games. We rounded
up neighborhood kids and played for fun. We played either football or basketball every
weekend. These two sports are the favorites of those who play them around the world. While
these sports are alike in many ways, they are very different in other aspects. Although sports such
as football and basketball are physically demanding, I, as a player of both, have noticed the
similarities as well as the differences. For instance, in football, I play fullback, and I carry... Show

The offense of football is one unit that goes on the field to play against the opponents defense.
When the offensive unit scores or turns the ball over, it goes to the sideline to await its turn to go
back out on to the field, and the same rules apply for the defensive unit. Football scores can be in
increments of one, two, three, and six points. They are scored by kicking a field goal after a
touchdown, tackling for safety, kicking a field goal in regulation play, running the ball into the
end zone. Football is played at a high speed with a lot of intensity. Basketball, on the other hand
is played inside on a court. There are only five players per team on the court at a time. Players
have to play both offense and defense simultaneously. The scoring in basketball is also different;
points can be scored in increments of one, two and three, these are scored by shooting the ball
into a hoop. Basketball is a game that is played by skilled people who can jump high, shoot well,
and have great ball handling skills. Playing basketball requires you to have to have endurance,
because running from offense to defense and back to offense requires you to be in great shape.
Basketball is played at a medium pace and can be very exciting and nail biting. To sum it all up,
both of these sports are equally exciting. They are both played with a lot enthusiasm and heart.

Complexity Theory
INTRODUCTION Brain manages the body functions, and process the information that allows us to
act on a changeable external environment. To fulfill these functions, during evolution, brain
acquired a large computing power, and specialized functions, such as cognition, emotion and
consciousness. With approximately 86 billion neurons (Herculano Houzel, 2009), each neuronwith
approximately hundreds to thousands of synapses has a great structural complexity, and with its
non linearity, it presents a rich dynamic. It is also a physical system composed of neurons that
communicate with each other through electrical discharges. With that in mind, it is no coincidence
that the main model used in neuroscience to describe the behavior of neurons was... Show more

However, the question, yet unsolved, is how the brain binds these distinct neural representations
and allow us to have the notion of one single object. This problem becomes more apparent when
we present to the brain more than one object, for example, a red triangle, and a yellow square.
How given the features triangle, square, red, and yellow, to avoid an incorrect combination?
If we take a computer system like a PC this would be no problem, because each information
would be allocated in a specific memory address. However in a distributed system, such as the
brain, the solution is not trivial. Moreover it is not a matter of finding a mechanism that works
across a generic distributed system, but one that is appropriate for the brain. It is important to note
that when I say that every sensory feature would be identified with a specific assembly of neurons,
it does not mean that these neurons need to be located next to each other. An intuitive solution
would be to imagine the existence of dedicated assembly connecting the different features that are
represented in distinct parts of the brain. Other alternative would be the presence of specialized
synapses connecting distinct feature assemblies. However, these options were discarded since these
solutions would involve creating specialized circuits in the brain. As a consequence of this
inflexibility, the demand for memory storage and processing would be greater than that the brain

Why the Police were Unable to Catch Jack the Ripper
In the Victorian Times, smog was a big problem. It made visibility extremely bad, so the murders
would have been harder to witness. There were lots of prostitutes because there weren t many
jobs available for woman, so they were forced on the streets. Most turned to alcohol. The people

action that could have been taken.
The police had only just been set up when the murders occurred, so had no previous experience.
The only way to prove someone committed a murder was to catch them in the act or get a
confession. Though they increased the number of officers, they only ever came across the
bodies, warm. There was more than one police force operating in London at the time, which
meant that there was a lack of communication. In fact, the superior officers told their subordinates
to not reveal any evidence they retrieved to their rival force, each police force wanting the glory
of catching the Whitechapel murderer. The Metropolitan police force was responsible for all of
London, except the city of London, which had its own separate, City Police force. They were both
working on the case because one of the murders had been committed in the area where the City
Police operated, as opposed to the other ones which occurred in the Metropolitan police forces area.

Oskar Schindler s Actions During the Holocaust
The Holocaust usually refers to Nazi Germany s systematic genocide of various peoples during
the Second World War, the main target of this designed massacre being the Jews. Approximately 6
million Jews became the victims of this fanatical racism, slaughter, and cruelty. However, in all this
madness, there were still a few people with sound conscience and courage to act against these
atrocities. The most famous of these heroes would be Oskar Schindler, the once opportunistic
businessman who, later, spent every last of his pennies to save his 1200 Schindler Jews. People

In order to keep his Jews out of the death camps, Schindler spent a sum of 4 million German
marks which was an enormous sum of money for those times. People ask why. They ask why
such a greedy opportunistic person changed his way of living and spent the whole of his life and
his money to save the Jews. When asked this question in person, Schindler replied as follows.
I hated the brutality, the sadism, and the insanity of Nazism. I just couldn t stand by and see
people destroyed. I did what I could, what I had to do, what my conscience told me I must do. That
s all there is to it. Really, nothing more.
Like he said, that was all there was to the reason for Schindler s actions. Schindler believed that the
Germans were doing wrong when they started killing innocent people, and, therefore, did what was
right, which was trying to save as many victims as possible.
Any person with a sound mind and a sound conscience would have realized what Schindler had
realized. However, during this period of intense cruelty, the vast majority of German citizens stood
by and watched as their Jewish neighbors were dragged from their homes, stripped of their
belongings, and killed. Two famous psychological experiments illustrate why no one else did what
Oskar Schindler did.

between obedience to authority and personal conscience. The experiment began in July 1961, a

Code Of Ethics And The Laws Of The Accounting Profession...
Critically reflect on the arguments as to why a code of ethics is essential to support the regulation
of the accounting profession in New Zealand.
Introduction
Code of Ethics display the ideal qualities that one should follow and demonstrate, in the accounting
profession. It lays down the expected standards, and are based on personal characteristics and
behavior. According to New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants Act 1996 the five
fundamental principles in the Code of Ethics are integrity, objectivity, professional competence and
due care, confidentiality and professional behavior (NZICA, 2013). These five principles aim at
guiding an accountant in a moralistic way. Although it highlights the general expectations of an
accountant, it is designed to benefit the wider accounting network. The Code of Ethics can also be
thought of as a perfect role model, which accountants use to compare themselves against. The Code
of Ethics is vital to the accounting profession because it helps keep a controlled, safe and positive
working environment.
Discussion
Integrity is one of the fundamental principle, which is responsible for securing and maintaining
confidence among the public, and also internally through professionalism. In the Code of Ethics,
integrity is defined to be, the key to building a network of good trust, and also personal
characteristics that distances one from taking advantage personally (Velayutham,2003).Generally
we can assume that integrity is directly

Slavery for many was a time of despair and anguish, it felt like hell not only by the heat of the

years apart, two of the most famous and well known slave narratives that give the modern day
reader just an idea of what slaverywas like are, Aphra Behns Oroonoko, or, The Royal Slave and
Olaudah Equianos The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano . The journey of
these two young men, although in many ways are similar, from a larger perspective could not
be more different. For Oroonoko a somewhat established young man who comes from royalty,
optimizes what it means to be a noble savage. As for a young Equiano who seems to spend most
of his childhood in slavery, must find a way to overcome the hand he has been dealt and work
hard to earn his freedom. Throughout both of these stories there are similarities and there are
differences as well. Some of the most interesting aspects that might stand out to the reader are, the
aspect of slavery and or the lack of it, suicide and how both characters go about it in their own
way and points of view and how the reader is influenced by it. One of the aspects that seems most
intriguing in both of these stories is that of slavery and or the lack of it. It is obvious that

Is It Better For Fix Or Float Interest Rates On The...
Is it better to fix or float interest rates in the current economic environment? This is the question
now facing Marcus Garvey who is planning to buy his first home in October of this year. Making
the right decision on whether to fix or float interest rates on a mortgage and for what period could
be the difference of thousands paid to the bank in additional interest. To assist Marcus in this
decision, this essay has looked at many variables. Firstly, and most importantly, what interest rates
are expected to do in the short term future? Secondly, what are the advantages and disadvantages
of both fixed and floating loans and how these will affect Marcus based on the information we
know about him. We also look at the unknowns of Marcus s situation that may lead to an
alteration in recommendation. Thirdly we will look at how long of a fixed period would be
recommended to have the most economic benefit for Marcus if he decides to go with this option.
Based on the information given on Marcus, and what we have learnt about the current environment,
it is decided to recommend that Marcus either fix his whole mortgage, or fix the majority while
leaving a small portion floating. There are many variables that must be considered when deciding
to fix or float and not knowing Marcus situation in relation to these variables, this would be the
safest option.

Replace white flour products with those made from whole grains, and look for other ways to
incorporate whole grains into your diet. Protein should be limited to fish and lean chicken, with red
meat removed or severely restricted. Instead, focus on getting protein from beans, soybeans, and
nuts.
Eat low or reduced fat versions of dairy products rather than the full fat varieties, limiting dairy
consumption to high quality cheeses and yogurt made from natural ingredients. Soy also has anti
inflammatory properties, so consuming soy milk, tofu, and edamame can be beneficial. And don t
be afraid to add spices like cinnamon, ginger, curry, and others, which can prevent inflammation
and are a good way to add flavor to foods without fat.
Healthy sweets, such as plain dark chocolate, should be enjoyed sparingly, with other types of
sugary treats limited. One to two glasses a day of red wine are fine under this diet, but other
types of alcohol should be avoided. Also, consider drinking two to four cups of white, green, or
oolong tea each day.
If you are concerned about avoiding foods that cause inflammation, you should cut saturated fats
and trans fats from your diet. These harmful fats are primarily found in processed foods and meat.
Refined carbohydrates and white flour, such as that found in pasta and rice, also cause
inflammation. Instead, switch to whole grain

Swarm Robotics Literature Review
Literature review
Nowadays, along with the development of the world, people now want to do much more
complicated work. In order to handle these prolems, the systems of robot have een developed. Just
like human, robots are always better when they work as a group, this is when the communication
and coordination algorithms need to be applied. To have a better look about this systems, we need
to understand clearly the term Swarm Robotics .
Defining swarm robotics
Ећahin (2005, p.1) defined swarm robotics as a novel approach to the coordination of large
numbers of robots. By simulating some properties of natural systems, this method is used to control
a large number of similar robots to do complicated tasks that an individual robot cannot.
There are three properties that define swarm robotics and separate it from other multi robot systems

However, due to large number of robots, and various environments that the group of robots may

Floreano (2010) proposed a system in which some robots act as communication relays, while other
robots operate as normal troops. This method used no or low bandwidth communication, and
showed good scalability performance. However, the use of this methods is only limited to small
area operation, as the range between communication relays and the robots are limited. Wireless
LAN is a solution to this limitation, as it support long range as well as high bandwidth
communication, however this is proved to be a costly solution, as every robot in the system must

Members of the United States Marshals Service had eyes on the residence, confirming this was
her residence and any and all parties present within the residence to the best possible knowledge.
At approximately 12:00 PM the warrant was served at RR3 Box 598 in Stilwell, OK. Upon
approach of the residence, Skelton opened the side door and was given commands to exit the
residence, where she was placed into custody. She informed us her 2 year old daughter and
fiancГ© were still in the residence. Kevin Bray ( Bray ), Skelton s fiancГ© then was
commanded to exit the residence and was detained. 2 year old, Aubrey Humphrey was brought
out of the residence last and sat with DHS and a member of the USMS. The residence was
cleared to ensure there were no other parties or threats were present inside the residence. I

Essay about Two Suits, Two Dresses, or One of Each
How can denying two people of the same sex the right to have a marriage be considered
constitutional? Why is our country taking away rights of people because they want to be with
someone of the same gender? Gay and lesbian couples have been denied their right to marry for
some time now. Same sex couples should be allowed to express and celebrate their commitment to
a partner the same way a heterosexual couple does, as well as obtain the same benefits. Our country
is not a Theocracy, we have separation of church and state, therefore the government cannot press
biblical or church will on citizens. The church has defined marriageas between a man and a woman
and this is fine as long as the government keeps a non religious standpoint. Many... Show more

This means the government cannot enact laws that prevent marriage between individuals of a
certain sexual orientation. If marriage is considered a civil liberty, then the 14th amendment
should stop the government from making laws that prohibit civil liberties based on a person s
choice in a partner. . . . Section 3 of DOMA violates the equal protection clause because it treats
gay man and lesbians differently on the basis of their sexual orientation (Hanna 30). If we
continue to strike down laws like DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), which denied same sex
couples the right to marry, we can fight this controversy and help innocent people obtain a right that
they were born with.
Some people may argue that marriage has always been defined as between one man and one woman
or that allowing gay marriage will weaken the institution of marriage. Extending to gays and
lesbians the right to marry would undermine traditional marriage, and therefore, governments have
a valid reason to maintain the traditional definition of it (Hanna 29). It is inaccurate to define
marriage as between one man and one woman because our world history is full of polygamy,
concubines, mistresses, and prostitution. Kings in the past had many women and this was
considered normal, one could say that the traditional marriage is the one that is not normal. We
redefine things as the general attitudes about them

The Lone Night Cantina, And Adrian Tomine s Graphic Novel...
Since the mid to late twentieth century, Asian American literature has become a thriving outlet for
writers of Asian descent. This literary group was slow to form and remains difficult to define
because it is comprised of numerous ethnic groups that often share few, if any, ties to one another.
However, this formation was and continues to be critical in combating stereotypes and prejudice
against Asian Americans. Influenced by concepts of Orientalism, Western culture portrays Asia as
source, a competitor, and the opposite in regards to progress. Consequently, many in the United
Statesconsider Asian Americans backwards and perpetual foreigners, despite being born in the same
country. Accordingly, common themes in Asian American
literature address identity in regards to
race, culture, gender, and sexuality. Don Lee s short story, The Lone Night Cantina, and Adrian
Tomine s graphic novel, Shortcomings, explore these ideas through their protagonists relationship
to the majority white culture. The Lone Night Cantina follows Annie Yung, a Korean American
Silicon Valley programmer, in the midst of an identity crisis after breaking up with her boyfriend.
While visiting her sister in Rosarita Bay, she meets Joe Konki who initially seems to embody the
hero of the Wild West who will come rescue her. Shortcomings illustrates bitter Ben Tanaka s
search for happiness and struggle with his identity as a Japanese American. His preference for porn
of white women strains his

Ethical Treatment of Prisoners
Ethical Treatment of Prisoners When there are million s of people incarcerated throughout the
United States, the ethical treatment of prisoner s rights must be analyzed. Throughout the years
many modifications have been made to accommodate inmates and preserve their basic human
rights. Have we as a society done enough regarding the ethical treatment of prisoners or have we
made their lives in prisontoo easy that it is no longer a punishment for them? There are many
people in the United States who have strong feelings of what is right and wrong and fall on both
sides of this question. Utilitarianism is the belief that moral rules should be choices made by a
society to promote the happiness of its members (Mosser, 2010). Through the... Show more content

Depending on the branch of the justice system that they are employed in, each person will have
their own set of moral and ethical values, as well as those that are required by the position they
hold. The tricky part can be to decide which set of values to follow in a situation where there may
be a choice, and if so, how does one go about making that choice. Do they possibly sacrifice their
personal ethics to follow those that are required by their position? Is it ok for them to bypass
those standards of their professional code of ethics in order to maintain their personal
standards? When it gets to the point of questioning whose ethics to follow, one has to wonder
who decides which set of ethics is more important and if there is a difference? People who are
employed in the justice system have to exhibit strength of mind and body to prove they are
worthy to be in charge of those who may be a danger to society. This fact alone places these
individuals in a position of power, and without a personal and professional code of ethics to live
by; this power could be taken out of context. This could lead to damage within the system, as well
as out on the street. For these people must make moral decisions everyday. A personal set of ethics
can often be hard to define. Ethics are not on a person s mind as they make various choices
throughout the day. When a person

  • 2. My Role Model In My Life Most life changing events happen with someone whom you truly trust. It is easy to ignore people, withdraw, and not form relationships built on love and reliance. I have truly grown closer to my role model in my life. Matt Harp, my role model, is a man of truth, integrity, love, selflessness, and compassion. Many different times he surprised me with how he acted, spoke and thought. I clearly saw the Lordlead his life, and his actions revealed as much. I wanted to follow his example. He led me through junior high, what was definitely the toughest part of my life. Looking back, I can only imagine what would have happened in my life if I had not grown to trust this honorable man. There are many different times where Matt taught me a life lesson, but these three are the most prominent. He taught me how to be unique, be yourself, always be willing to share, and to never give up, even when you are tired. As a groovy guy, my small group leader always wore what the coolest clothes. I loved to talk to him about it. I said I love your style. Where do you buy your clothes? Many different times, I wore similar clothes to him. I started wearing unique socks, colored jeans, and many other things. He took more notice than I realized. One day he took me aside and said You don t have to live exactly like someone else, you just need to be you. He insisted, saying don t just copy me because you like the way that I dress, find your own groove. I took these small statements to heart. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They chose to use their experiences in their writings which were widely criticized as well as loved by many readers. Two of the most influential Beat Poets of that Generation of writers were Allen Ginsbergand Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The Beat Generationpoetry was the first poets to write about non conventional subjects as well as using different forms of expression in their works. This generation of poets greatly influenced poets such as Anne Sexton, who wrote about personal experiences as well. The Beat Generation is characterized as a group of poets after World War II, they are widely known and recognized for their works because it is not only well documents but also because they inspired many future generation of writers. The elements of the Beat Generation s poetry are drugs, sexuality, religion centering on the Eastern World, rejection of materialism and freedom of expression. The members of this movement were known as non conformists and were spontaneously creative in their writings. Thomas Merrill states that the influence of drugs in the movement was: The incessant search for reality within (through drugs, meditation and intense feeling) was a quest for authenticity that reason, it was felt, deadened. It called for the reconnaissance at the extremes of human experience, as far beyond the limits of reason as possible, thus placing uncommon stress upon subjunctive moods. (Merrill, 2) Influences of the Beat Movement can be noted in the next phase of American History: Hippie counter culture of the 1960s. The Beat Generation was an important political catalyst for those minorities that had no voice. The beatniks of the movement were seen as a threat by those Americans that lived in the typical suburbs of American who tried to raise their children in morally upright ways (Silesky, 81). • 4. Comparing Poems The Bloody Sire And Into Battle The poems The bloody Sire by Robinson Jeffers and Into Battle by Julian Grenfell both deal with the concepts of war and violence. Both poems use nature as a literary device to help tell the story. In Into Battle Grenfell uses owls that tell the narrator be swift and keen as they / as keen of ear, as swift of sight (25 26). A blackbird also tells him if this be the last song you shall sing, / sing well, for you may not sing another (28 29). This is foreshadowing as well as personification as the animals are warning him that he may die by giving him advice, such as the owls, or by telling him to sing for the last time as the blackbird did because it is his last night alive. It is also personification because birds cannot talk to humans.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Violence ends Into Battle by the person either dying or by living. Grenfell also put when fighting shall be done, / great rest, and fulness after dearth showing that if you live through the battle and it is over you can live the rest of your life (13 14). In The Bloody Sire there is always violence. Jeffers writes It is not bad. Let them play. / Let the guns bark and the bombing plane / speak his prodigious blasphemies (1 3). Boyle used different elements much like symbolism and characterization to display an obscure theme throughout the novel that displayed a hypothetical wall of one of the characters that was slowly getting torn down as the story progressed. In the beginning of the novel, we are aware of the actual or real wall that is in progress of being built around a housing community of Arroyo Blanco Estates. This wall is an example of a boundary to keep those unwelcome out of the community. Delaney only wants to help him as shown on page seven. Even with Candido refusing his help, Delaney feels bad and offers him $20. Throughout the novel, we are able to see other conflicts that begin to allow characters emotions to break down Delaney s hypothetical wall. During the middle of the novel, we see Jack trying to persuade Delaney to see how there is no good that comes with immigration. For example on page 104 Jack and Delaney get into an argumentative debate over their views of immigration. Delaney shows how he believes immigrants should be given a chance and Jack thinks otherwise. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the real world consequences of when Army leaders become complacent dealing with foreign national soldiers, and the day to day operations while in a combat theatre. To gather lessons learned from the example discussed in order to lower the probability of a reoccurrence among the force. While conducting our left seat/right seat rides with the MiTT team it was apparent that security was not a major concern with them, which can hardly be surprising when you understand that they probable had a force that at best constituted a squad sized element. I cannot honestly recall if they had anybody pulling any type of security on the entrance of the COP or not. Once we finally took over the COP, we ensured that there was a soldier pulling security at the entrance, along with another soldier pulling radio guard in a Bradley about 25 meters behind his position. Both these poems were written by a person called Siegfried Sasson, who wrote most of his poems during the World War One, which outlined how bad the war was to those at home after suffering from being Shell Shocked. There is also some similarity in Suicide in the Trenches where Siegfried Sasson describes the trenches as if it is like hell meaning that war was like a place where young people went and got themselves killed. On the first line of Died of Wounds, Siegfried Sasson wrote Wet White , which is alliteration, which is a type of sound device. He also does this on the third line, ninth line and the last line. This makes the poem sound better. There is also some similarity in Suicide in the Trenches, where the author also uses this device to make the poem catchier but instead uses different letters to make it sound different and better. As a player, I respect this and thank you for keeping star athletes from taking mine or my team mates spots on the team. It is also understandable that you along with other GHSA board members may not think about school systems like ours that continuously have people switching primarily because of the rigor of different school, such as me switching to TCCHS from Thomasville High SchoolScholars Academy, because I simply could not keep up with the pace and rigor that they teach with. After weighing out both points of view, transfers from any school should be allowed to participate in varsity sports without having to wait a year from the time of transferring to their new school. My thought out solution is to simply allow it, but have those athletes only be able to play half of the season. The 50% that they get to play in the season would be talked out between the coach, athlete, and the parents. Having this rule would be a good compromise between not allowing transfers to play and allowing them. With this rule in place, athletes would be able to get in their time to stand out, but they would not take away a lot of time from players who have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hope plays the most important role in this novel as McMurphy represents hope and Nurse Ratched represents its opposite, thus serving as the basis for the change in perspective of the other patients. McMurphy is the embodiment of hope for the patients as he challenges Nurse Ratchedand her strict hold of their freedom. This idea of hope is so foreign to the patients that when he first arrives, he makes everybody over there feel uneasy, with all his kidding and joking (17). While early depictions of a prostitute describe a woman who plagues society, later portrayals offer a much more human and sympathetic view. Across many works of the 19th century, there are several images of the prostitute that change overtime to reflect society s view of these women. Between the character, Nana from Emile Zola s novel and Lulu from the silent film Pandora s Box, there is visible evolution of the 19th century prostitute and her relationship to society. Emile Zola s novel Nana offers a very negative and critical view of the prostitute in French society. Zola s entire novel acts to criticize women like Nana for the disease... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The prostitute Lulu, featured in the film Pandora s box offers a sympathetic mage of the prostitute. The 1929 silent film is based off a set of plays called the Lulu plays from the late 19th century, and offers a more positive portrayal of a prostitute compared to earlier works from the era. One aspect of Lulu that is not incorporated into the earlier 19th century image of a prostitute is the prospect of marriage. Lulu is allowed to enter the upper class tier of life and does so through marrying the Doctor. Allowing for a prostitute to be marry contradicts the early image of an immoral woman that was associated with prostitutes like Nana. Along with this shift in social status, Lulu is much more of a victim than earlier prostitutes like Nana were. By some circumstances, Lulu is forced into prostitution by her father. Where prostitutes from the early 19th century had always been the gross plague of society, with Lulu, she is a victim and a man (her father) is shown to be the immoral character. This point is further supported by Lulu s death. While most prostitutes from earlier works succumb to a disease of their own body, Lulu is murdered. Again, Lulu is the victim not the cause of her suffering. The differences in the portrayal of Nana and Lulu show an eveolution of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After the French and Indian War in 1763 the British government made many new laws, agreements and taxes regulating all colonists which eventually led to the Revolutionary War. There were several reasons why the revolution began and the colonists decided to separate from Great Britain. Most colonists did not approve of the King because he ruled with tyranny. He was unjust and did not listen to the input of the colonists. Others such as Loyalists, believed the King s decisions were fair. Long before 1763, America was large in population and still growing. Over time cheating has increased drastically for many reasons. As a result of this, institutions have had to enforce strict rules and create honor codes to protect the integrity of their students. Although academic dishonesty has several negative effects, students continue to cheat for reasons such as: unclear guidelines, pressure, being overworked, and lack of effort. Academic dishonesty takes numerous forms. It can vary from plagiarism to professional misconduct. Due to this, the definition of what academic dishonesty is has become blurred for not only students, but teachers as well. Colleges and universities do a poor job of educating their students and instructors on what qualifies as cheating. Although most schools have honor codes in place to protect their students integrity, the guidelines can lack clear boundaries and consistency. These guidelines can also lack how instructors are to enforce these rules, leaving them without a clear process to follow. This can lead to many accidental violations of the honor codes. However, the question, yet unsolved, is how the brain binds these distinct neural representations and allow us to have the notion of one single object. This problem becomes more apparent when we present to the brain more than one object, for example, a red triangle, and a yellow square. How given the features triangle, square, red, and yellow, to avoid an incorrect combination? If we take a computer system like a PC this would be no problem, because each information would be allocated in a specific memory address. However in a distributed system, such as the brain, the solution is not trivial. Moreover it is not a matter of finding a mechanism that works across a generic distributed system, but one that is appropriate for the brain. It is important to note that when I say that every sensory feature would be identified with a specific assembly of neurons, it does not mean that these neurons need to be located next to each other. An intuitive solution would be to imagine the existence of dedicated assembly connecting the different features that are represented in distinct parts of the brain. Other alternative would be the presence of specialized synapses connecting distinct feature assemblies. However, these options were discarded since these solutions would involve creating specialized circuits in the brain. As a consequence of this inflexibility, the demand for memory storage and processing would be greater than that the brain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When asked this question in person, Schindler replied as follows. I hated the brutality, the sadism, and the insanity of Nazism. I just couldn t stand by and see people destroyed. I did what I could, what I had to do, what my conscience told me I must do. That s all there is to it. Really, nothing more. Like he said, that was all there was to the reason for Schindler s actions. Schindler believed that the Germans were doing wrong when they started killing innocent people, and, therefore, did what was right, which was trying to save as many victims as possible. Any person with a sound mind and a sound conscience would have realized what Schindler had realized. However, during this period of intense cruelty, the vast majority of German citizens stood by and watched as their Jewish neighbors were dragged from their homes, stripped of their belongings, and killed. Two famous psychological experiments illustrate why no one else did what Oskar Schindler did. Stanley Milgram, a psychologist at Yale University, conducted a study focusing on the conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience. The experiment began in July 1961, a ... Critically reflect on the arguments as to why a code of ethics is essential to support the regulation of the accounting profession in New Zealand. Introduction Code of Ethics display the ideal qualities that one should follow and demonstrate, in the accounting profession. It lays down the expected standards, and are based on personal characteristics and behavior. According to New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants Act 1996 the five fundamental principles in the Code of Ethics are integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality and professional behavior (NZICA, 2013). These five principles aim at guiding an accountant in a moralistic way. Although it highlights the general expectations of an accountant, it is designed to benefit the wider accounting network. The Code of Ethics can also be thought of as a perfect role model, which accountants use to compare themselves against. The Code of Ethics is vital to the accounting profession because it helps keep a controlled, safe and positive working environment. Discussion Integrity is one of the fundamental principle, which is responsible for securing and maintaining confidence among the public, and also internally through professionalism. In the Code of Ethics, integrity is defined to be, the key to building a network of good trust, and also personal characteristics that distances one from taking advantage personally (Velayutham,2003).Generally we can assume that integrity is directly ... • 30. The Narrative Of The Life Of Olaudah Equiano s ``... Slavery for many was a time of despair and anguish, it felt like hell not only by the heat of the sun, but, by the treatment many received from their owners as well. Despite written almost 100 years apart, two of the most famous and well known slave narratives that give the modern day reader just an idea of what slaverywas like are, Aphra Behns Oroonoko, or, The Royal Slave and Olaudah Equianos The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano . The journey of these two young men, although in many ways are similar, from a larger perspective could not be more different. For Oroonoko a somewhat established young man who comes from royalty, optimizes what it means to be a noble savage. As for a young Equiano who seems to spend most of his childhood in slavery, must find a way to overcome the hand he has been dealt and work hard to earn his freedom. Throughout both of these stories there are similarities and there are differences as well. Some of the most interesting aspects that might stand out to the reader are, the aspect of slavery and or the lack of it, suicide and how both characters go about it in their own way and points of view and how the reader is influenced by it. One of the aspects that seems most intriguing in both of these stories is that of slavery and or the lack of it. It is obvious that throughout both stories, Oroonoko and Equiano are very much surrounded by slavery, however throughout both stories the two main characters never seem to ... This is the question now facing Marcus Garvey who is planning to buy his first home in October of this year. Making the right decision on whether to fix or float interest rates on a mortgage and for what period could be the difference of thousands paid to the bank in additional interest. To assist Marcus in this decision, this essay has looked at many variables. Firstly, and most importantly, what interest rates are expected to do in the short term future? Secondly, what are the advantages and disadvantages of both fixed and floating loans and how these will affect Marcus based on the information we know about him. We also look at the unknowns of Marcus s situation that may lead to an alteration in recommendation. Thirdly we will look at how long of a fixed period would be recommended to have the most economic benefit for Marcus if he decides to go with this option. Based on the information given on Marcus, and what we have learnt about the current environment, it is decided to recommend that Marcus either fix his whole mortgage, or fix the majority while leaving a small portion floating. There are many variables that must be considered when deciding to fix or float and not knowing Marcus situation in relation to these variables, this would be the safest option. Eat low or reduced fat versions of dairy products rather than the full fat varieties, limiting dairy consumption to high quality cheeses and yogurt made from natural ingredients. Soy also has anti inflammatory properties, so consuming soy milk, tofu, and edamame can be beneficial. Social Changes in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Essay Social Changes in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe In the book Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, we are able to read about the social changes the white missionaries had on an African tribe. Mr. Achebe describes the way of life before the missionaries arrived and then records some of the changes, which occurred due to the changed belief system introduced by these missionaries. Soon after the missionaries began to teach the tribal people about the Christian faith, their tribal customs began to be questioned. This caused a sense of unrest in the village. The missionaries were trying to bring with them new ways of life, and mostly better ways of life. Mr.Achebe tries to show us that the missionaries showed people who were hurt by... Her husband and his family were already becoming highly critical of such a woman and were not unduly perturbed when they found out she had fled to join the Christians. It was a good riddance (pg.151). This shows us how Mr. Achebe understood what was happening and wasn?t surprised when the women fled to the Christians. This tells us that he didn t really care about the people who left the tribe. He understood why they left but as he said, ?it was a good riddance . In order to handle these prolems, the systems of robot have een developed. Just like human, robots are always better when they work as a group, this is when the communication and coordination algorithms need to be applied. To have a better look about this systems, we need to understand clearly the term Swarm Robotics . Defining swarm robotics Ећahin (2005, p.1) defined swarm robotics as a novel approach to the coordination of large numbers of robots. By simulating some properties of natural systems, this method is used to control a large number of similar robots to do complicated tasks that an individual robot cannot. There are three properties that define swarm robotics and separate it from other multi robot systems (Ећahin, 2005). This method used no or low bandwidth communication, and showed good scalability performance. However, the use of this methods is only limited to small area operation, as the range between communication relays and the robots are limited. Wireless LAN is a solution to this limitation, as it support long range as well as high bandwidth communication, however this is proved to be a costly solution, as every robot in the system must have a WLAN module to support this method (Brambilla et al., ... Why is our country taking away rights of people because they want to be with someone of the same gender? Gay and lesbian couples have been denied their right to marry for some time now. Same sex couples should be allowed to express and celebrate their commitment to a partner the same way a heterosexual couple does, as well as obtain the same benefits. This means the government cannot enact laws that prevent marriage between individuals of a certain sexual orientation. If marriage is considered a civil liberty, then the 14th amendment should stop the government from making laws that prohibit civil liberties based on a person s choice in a partner. . . . Section 3 of DOMA violates the equal protection clause because it treats gay man and lesbians differently on the basis of their sexual orientation (Hanna 30). If we continue to strike down laws like DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), which denied same sex couples the right to marry, we can fight this controversy and help innocent people obtain a right that they were born with. Some people may argue that marriage has always been defined as between one man and one woman or that allowing gay marriage will weaken the institution of marriage. Extending to gays and lesbians the right to marry would undermine traditional marriage, and therefore, governments have a valid reason to maintain the traditional definition of it (Hanna 29). It is inaccurate to define marriage as between one man and one woman because our world history is full of polygamy, concubines, mistresses, and prostitution. Kings in the past had many women and this was considered normal, one could say that the traditional marriage is the one that is not normal. We redefine things as the general attitudes about them ... • 40. The Lone Night Cantina, And Adrian Tomine s Graphic Novel... Since the mid to late twentieth century, Asian American literature has become a thriving outlet for writers of Asian descent. This literary group was slow to form and remains difficult to define because it is comprised of numerous ethnic groups that often share few, if any, ties to one another. However, this formation was and continues to be critical in combating stereotypes and prejudice against Asian Americans. Influenced by concepts of Orientalism, Western culture portrays Asia as source, a competitor, and the opposite in regards to progress. Consequently, many in the United Statesconsider Asian Americans backwards and perpetual foreigners, despite being born in the same country. Accordingly, common themes in Asian American literature address identity in regards to race, culture, gender, and sexuality. Don Lee s short story, The Lone Night Cantina, and Adrian Tomine s graphic novel, Shortcomings, explore these ideas through their protagonists relationship to the majority white culture. The Lone Night Cantina follows Annie Yung, a Korean American Silicon Valley programmer, in the midst of an identity crisis after breaking up with her boyfriend. While visiting her sister in Rosarita Bay, she meets Joe Konki who initially seems to embody the hero of the Wild West who will come rescue her.
