The Vietnam War On The Movie, Platoon, As A Portal
Platoon
The Vietnam War was one the most controversial wars in America. This paper is meant to examine the
Vietnam War using the movie, Platoon, as a portal. Analyzing scenes in the movie and how they
pertain to the films ideology. The paper will look at the struggles presented in war from the outlook of
the grunt. It will look at the pro war and anti war view of propaganda. It will look at the good and evil,
right and wrong, conflicts in the film. How do these messages reflect the reality of the war? Is the
agenda to create a vision of reality or is the film simply a form of entertainment?
The film, Platoon, is the perspective of the Vietnam War in 1967 through the eyes of Chris Taylor
(Charlie Sheen). Chris leaves school to enlist in combat and once he starts he quickly questions his
decision. He has two officers, Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger) and Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe).
The two officers have different views; Barnes, who wants revenge because he believes that the VC
(Viet Cong) ground troops are being safeguarded by a local village, and Elias, who has a more
peaceful, less violent demeanor. Tension builds between Barnes and Alias until Barnes shoots a
villager in the head, Elias intervenes preventing annihilation of the village inhabitants. This event
causes the platoon to split into two camps which pit against each other, causing conflict with the
enemy and the men in the platoon.
The film will be examined using the ideological film theory. The film

Marita s Bargain Summary
Malcolm Gladwell s essay, Marita s Bargain; is a text all high school students should read to motivate
them to do their best in high school because it relates to us how success is not defined by your social
class, how the struggles of outside pressure and how that affects high school students in school, and
how high school students feel about how much time goes into a school. In the paper by Malcolm
Gladwell, Marita s Bargain; he writes about a school in New York called the KIPP Academy in New
York, where the circumstances of this school are bad. Gladwell gives his us a description telling us the
scenario that helps us get the point that social class doesn t describe the intellect of a student by
stating, It is a squat, gray 1960s era building across the street from a bleak looking group of high rises.
(Gladwell, 3) and Roughly half of the students are African American; the rest are Hispanic. Three
quarters of the children come from single parent homes. Ninety percent qualify for free or reduced
lunch, which is to say that their families earn so little that the federal government chips in so the
children can eat properly at lunchtime. (Gladwell, 3 4) These two quotes from page 3 describes the
living conditions of the lower class people, they live in gray 1960 era looking building with a single
parent home that doesn t even get enough income to get their kids lunch to where ninety percent of the
kids qualify for free or reduced lunch provided by the government.

What Are The Similarities Between The Lost And Lord Of The...
The essences of human nature share a respectable number of similarities, more than one may assume.
Humans strive to secure, at the very least, four, primary essentials: food, water, shelter, and fire. This
scenario is evidently seen in both the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and the modern
television show, Lost . In both applications, a group of complete strangers is stranded on a mysterious
island, encountering a lack of basic necessities, sanity, and hope. Nevertheless, every character
unambiguously lived in varying ways: from a savage tribe to an orderly democracy. Unsurprisingly,
these two mediums demonstrate similar aspects in their storyline, imagery, and, most vitally, the
characters. Based on the analysis of Lord of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter two, at an assembly, Ralph established two aspects: roles and rules. He asserted that they
can t have everybody talking at once. We ll have to have Hands up like at school....I ll give the conch
to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he s speaking. (Golding 33). In this scenario, Ralph
utilized the conch as a symbol of law and order. By controlling who had the ability to speak, the
serene, civilized tone of the processions would be maintained, which was something Ralph profoundly
endeavored for. Furthermore, in chapter five, when Ralph signalled a meeting to discuss the boys
uncivilized acts, he reasserted several points to reinitiate order. Ralph stated that [y]ou voted me for
chief. Now you do what I say...So remember. The rocks for a lavatory. Keep the fire going and smoke
showing as a signal, Don t take fire from the mountain. Take your food up there. (Golding 81). Once
again, Ralph portrayed his civilized character by pleading for the boys to perform various tasks in an
orderly fashion. These mandates were devised to eradicate the possibles of an unstructured society
where the boys would be oblivious to the importance of stability and, even more crucially,

Iago Quotes In Othello
Be careful who you trust, the devil was once an angel. (Unknown). Honest Iago, good Iago, many
names for the character who created so much chaos throughout Shakespeare s classic tragedy Othello.
Iago manipulated everyone; he went out of his way to destroy Othello s relationships with
Desdemona, take everything from Rodrigo, and the effort to destroy Cassio.
Othello had much respect towards Iago and put much trust into him. Iago was very good a hiding his
true intentions to take down Othello s relationship.
After some time, to abuse Othello s ear
That he is too familiar with his wife.
He hath a person and a smooth dispose
To be suspect, framed to make women false. (1: 3: 384 87)

Little by little Iago was able to push Othello to the point where he was no longer the person we saw at
the beginning of the play. Othello killed Desdemona because he though Iago was his friend and would
never lie. Iago was a very toxic friend since the start and knew exactly how the story would end
because he had everyone wrapped around his finger.
Rodrigo was another victim that payed for Iago s wrath towards Othello, envy towards Cassio, and
overall greed for money and power, all of which are deadly sins. Iago charmed Rodrigo with the idea
that he could have his one true desire; the fair Desdemona. Iago never cared for Rodrigo and though
he was pathetic as did the audience because he was constantly whiny. Rodrigo was also gullible and
very desperate to win Desdemona s affection. In act 2 scene 3 Rodrigo is very emotional over that fact
he feels he will never get Desdemona because Iago is not giving him results and ends up saying I will
incontinently drown myself. . Iago again out of self need helps Rodrigo so he will not kill himself. The
reason he stops Rodrigo is because he is the source of his money, and he knows he will need him in
the future for his plan. He does end up becoming part of his plan in helping destroy Cassio, but
Rodrigo dies at the hands of Iago so that Iago would look like a hero and the one person who knew his
plan is dead. Iago is a master of manipulation and which lead to Rodrigo ending in a very unfortunate
situation.

Borderland
SOC 248T: Post Soviet Paradoxes Ryan Kelley Professor Shevchenko November 16, 2016 Response
to The Bulgarian Borderland by L. Melishkevich SUMMARY Main Claim of Paper: Religious
divisions in Madan (and other Bulgarian towns in the Rhodope region) are produced by a religious
borderland in which individuals grapple with ideological conflict and tension, characterized by
Eastern vs. Western influences. Support: Factual information and quotes from Muslim Lives in
Eastern Europe; Supportive information (for comparisons) from other books/places examined this
semester. CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK (with some complimentary questions) Argument: Pushing
back against Ghodsee s notion that Madan is unique due to the combination of its large Muslim
populations and the collapse of GORUBSO, the paper builds off past discussions of borderland (with
Where the World Ended and Consecution and Social Change) to argue that a religious borderland is
responsible for divisions in the Bulgarian Muslim population. I have little critique of the broad
argument (I think it s rather brilliant!) BUT I think it suffers from organizational and evidence
deficiencies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Is this borderland signifiant for the rest of Bulgaria? How? I admire how you took your paper road the
road that Ghodsee appears hesitant to travel: You focus on the religious experience itself as significant

her argument to include gender and ethnicity? How could your argument benefit from these other lines

Does Having an Offshore Occupation Have a Detrimental...
RESEARCH QUESTION
The research question under review is;
How does having an offshore occupation impact the family dynamic?
The aim of the study is to investigate whether or not having an offshore occupation has a detrimental
impact on the dynamic of the family, particularly in relation to the spouse and their children.
BACKGROUND
There appears to be a gap in the literature concerning the adaptions to families whilst the male role
figure is away for weeks at a time, despite major s changes that have occurred across the industry.
However, Parkes et al (2005) looked at the perceptions, attitudes and concerns of spouses of offshore
workers from a psychological perspective. The results presented that spouses have a number of
concerns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Gibson (2012) believed that children are competent to act as informants regarding their
experiences. Yet, it is important to ensure there are no significant power differences between the adults
and the children. Moreover, it is imperative for the children to understand why they have been asked
to participate and aware that they are allowed to make their own decisions about participation, hence
why an age restriction has been implemented.
The participants will be collected using the purposive sampling method, in environments such as the
work place or social events. The purposive sampling technique was selected as it is an effective
method for collecting participants in qualitative studies. The technique is constructed to allow the
researcher to deliberately select specific persons for their research (Teddie and Yu 2007).
Data Analysis
Focus groups have been renowned for its inherently complex data analysis. It requires an experienced
researcher to identify the themes that have emerged throughout the discussions, to ensure no bias
tailoring has been made to support theoretical assumptions.
Therefore, the data collected from the focus group will be transcribed by the researcher using the
audio recorder. The data will be analysed using thematic analysis which involves identifying and
coding the key themes that have emerged. Thematic analysis is a widely used

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Block Codes
Communication systems consist of transmitter, channel, and receiver. The latter can be affected by a
noise source, such as the Additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN) which, in turn, can cause a change
in the data transmission. As a result of data change or corruption, the idea of channel coding was
introduced as a reliable solution to overcome this dilemma. Nowadays, we use some techniques as
Forward error correction (FEC) to reduce the errors that might appear during the information
transmission over the channel. In this technique, the system adds redundant (extra) bits to identify if a
specific bit is corrupted or not and correct it. FEC Channel codes may be classified into two main
categories: the Convolutional Code and the Block Code. On ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In other words, block coding is a memory less operation as code words are independent from each
other. In contrast, the output of a convolutional encoder doesn t only depend on the current input
information, but also depends on the previous inputs or outputs; either on a block by block or a bit by
bit basis. Each kind of block codes gets a special generation matrix and a decoding matrix.
Unfortunately, the main disadvantage of block codes is that we cannot extract the information until the
whole code is received. In addition, the entire block has to be retransmitted in case of error.
Convolutional encoders:
In several applications the message bits are transmitted serially rather than blocks. In such cases, it is
not preferred to use a buffer. Thus, the use of convolutional codes may be the optimum method as it
generates redundant bits by using modulo 2 convolutions hence the name of the coder.
The convolutional encoder can be represented as a finite state machine (FSM) with a given number of
shift register stages. For example, if there is a K stage shift registers (usually D flip flops) with a rate
of encoder input bits to its output is 1/n and L bits length message, so the coded output sequence will
have the length of n (L+K) bits .
The most common convolutional encoders have the following parameters: K=2

Bush The Bipartism Consensus Summary
Chapter 21 Carter Raegan Bush: The Bipartism Consensus
A. Thesis Statement:
Fundamental problems such as environmental deterioration, deepening economic insecurity for much
of the population, and a growing culture of violence and family disarray could not be solved without
bold changes in the social and economic structure.
Evidence used:
1. After President Bush took office, a government scientist prepared testimony for a Congressional
committee in regards to the dangerous effects of industrial uses of coal and other fossil fuels in
contributing to global warming. This ecological crisis in the world had become so serious that Pope
John Paul II rebuked the wealthy classes of the industrialized nations for creating that crisis. An

So much was poured into war efforts that little was left for the general people to strive on.
c) An additional source that would be helpful would be one from someone of the general population.
As victims of so much going into the war and hardly anything going to them, it would be interesting to
see and relate to their anger.
D. Observations/Questions:
1. Poverty causes stress on marriages as well as within a family. Hunger and lack of other necessities
led to frustration and strained relationships. Families were split and torn apart. And when families fall
apart, so does the nation. The family is the core foundation of teamwork, cooperation, understanding,
and commitment. And when people loose these things or aren t taught them as children, there is bound
to be chaos...and there was.
2. It s amazing what the work of one man can do to a country. President Ronald Raegan made the
choices to spend large amounts of money on military, yet almost completely ignored the social
atmosphere of his people. He favored the rich over the poor and middle classes, who constituted the
majority of the population. His choices ultimately caused economic, social, and political

The trip from Tuscon was a long and wretched drive. It had just rained the night prior so the air was
hot and sticky. The sweat clung to me like glue, and was impossible to peel off. The only thing

monster getting ready to swallow me whole. As we enter the canyon there was the feeling of dread,
like someone or something is hiding in the shadows and was going to drag you into it s depths if you
get too close. As we continue driving I can see the creek below with some parts clear and some parts
muddy. We were driving fast so the shadows all seemed to merge together. Every once in a while one
shadow leaps from the other, giving it the appearance that something is running to keep up with the
car, but I lost sight of the shadow as fast as it appeared. We turn down a road that quickly turns into a
dirt one. The road was very rough and rugged. There were pot holes everywhere and when you think
there was no more it would start up again. The car jerked and jumped and swayed every which way.
At one point my head nearly touched the roof, thats how bad the holes and bumps are. The trees curve
inward, giving it an arch appearance. It blanketed the road with ominous shadows. The shadows start
moving again, not from the wind, but from whatever was hiding among them. Up a little ways I could
see a small cabin.

Pearl Harbor Air Raid Analysis
Because of the sudden attacks, the air raid on Pearl Harbor had three very unusual features regarding
the injuries for the medical personnel to deal with. First, there was a great number of casuaIties
received at the hospitals in a short period of time; second, many patients had been overboard at some
point and were covered with fuel oil; third, there was a very high percentage of burn cases (Hayden).
How did the hospitals handle all of these tragedies at once and remain successful?
Just 36 hours before the air raid, a lecture was given to all the medical personnel in the area about how
to handle the quantities of wounded in an attack setting. After, they had a scenario were stress was
placed on the personnel to quickly and adequately clean wounds by soap and water, followed by the
surgical removal of lacerated or contaminated tissue. Three criteria were to be fulfilled: (1) obtaining
normal color, (2) bleeding, and (3) muscle contraction. When this was completed, the next step was to
place in the wound an adequate amount of a sulfonamide drug, either sulfanilamide and sulfathiazole.
No wounds were to be sutured, but instead left wide open or to have nonabsorbable interrupted sutures

Several plastic surgery clinics were set up in the United States for these purposes. After the
servicemen were properly treated and were free of infection, their deformities could go under the

continues to be a leading fixator for war torn bodies and creates peace within the individual.

Charles Dickens Beliefs
Charles Dickens is a well known name, most commonly associated with the classic Christmas novel,
A Christmas Carol. However, there are numerous elements about him not as widely known. For
instance, Dickens view of Christianity were eccentric, and he was passionate about social reform in
his time. Some of his lesser known writings and works attest to this. Regardless of his beliefs, he has
had an enduring impact on the world.
Charles Dickens was a different type of Christian. Contrary to most, he saw no importance in tradition
and scripture. He disliked every form of organized Christianity, especially evangelicalism and Roman
Catholicism. His writing consisted of only the most generic form of Christianity, never specifying
denomination or other. This is because Charles Dickens himself only believed that there was God, as
in a higher authority. He also viewed Jesus as a comforter of the distressed, not as the savior of
mankind. Due to his beliefs, Charles Dickens took it upon himself to write The Life of Our Lord, his
own simplified translation of the Gospels. His beliefs and actions were far from what is considered
Christian today. Though Dickens beliefs may not have been traditional in his time or the modern era of
today, he proved to be morally strong and stood out as a passionate social reformer. Dickens views on
society were established at a young age. Beginning at age 12, Dickens was forced to work at a shoe
blacking factory due to his father s imprisonment in

This is not typical of how most people fall in love. Most people start off as simply liking each other s

Genius and Madness in Christopher Smart s My Cat Jeoffry
A series of verses commencing with the word for , Christopher Smart s My Cat Jeoffry is surprisingly
modernistic and intriguing. Written while Smart was confined in a mental asylum for incessant
praying, the aphoristic poem praises the cat Jeoffry, a faithful servant to God. Unrestricted by rigid
poetic structures, My Cat Jeoffry is nevertheless organized and coherent, ablaze with a current of
religious fervour. It is impossible to know if the poem was inspired by genius or by madness, but it is
infused with sanity and truth. While the poem is about a cat s devotion to God through its daily
actions, Smart s My Cat Jeoffry also serves as a lesson to humankind. ... Show more content on

Is Smart perhaps inserting his characteristic wit into My Cat Jeoffry and alluding to John Wesley s
(1703 1791) dictum cleanliness is next to godliness ?
Superior to other animals due to the dexterity of his movements (40, 71), Jeoffry is able to serve God
asleep and awake, as emphasized in Smart s parallel lines For there is nothing sweeter than his peace
when at rest./For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion (44 45). Jeoffry s abilities to
influence those around him is also brought into light in the parallel lines For he is hated by the
hypocrite and miser./For the former is afraid of detection./For the latter refuses the charge (57 59).
Jeoffry, even when his day s work is done (23), continues to work in God s grace by keeping the Devil
at bay with his electrical skin glaring eyes (25). This use of diction seems absurd, and one wonders if
Smart is not fooling his audience all along. Echoing William Blake s The Tiger and his Four Fold
Vision by the vivid descriptions of his Angel Tiger (29), Smart hints that there exist multiple layers in
My Cat Jeoffry . Without a doubt, Jeoffry s life can be paralleled to that of humankind. However, what
kind of person does Smart speak of? Is Smart truly praising those who are devoted to God, or is he
criticizing those who are over zealous in their devotions?
Given the knowledge of Smart s background,

the persistence of their healthcare teams inspired me to be someone who helps others with the same

Examples Of Racial Inequalities In Education
Racial and Socioeconomic Inequalities in Education
Topic: Inequalities in education
Purpose: Examine issues of inequality in education in regard to race and socioeconomic status
Thesis: Public education is mandatory for youths across our country, with the intention of preparing
them for the world, yet, statistics indicate that students of color aren t receiving the same attention or
resources as their white counterparts. I say to you, quite frankly, that the time for racial discrimination
is over. Is a statement that most people can get behind in today s world, where news of racial injustice
sprouts up seemingly every day from across the globe. The call for equality in the United States has
been around since its genesis as a colony, with different eras finding various cases of success. Such
examples could include: the abolition of slavery, the legalization of interracial marriage or the
desegregation of public schools. Even with these cases, and many others, standing tall as marks of
progress, our country could use further reform in the education department. It has become apparent,
through much research, that desegregating schools by law doesn t clean up the internal prejudice
present in many of our classrooms today. Before we delve into displays of racism in our modern

Advantages And Drawbacks Of Ipo
Drawbacks of IPO s It is true that IPO raises huge capital for the issuing company. But in order to
launch an Initial Public Offering (IPO), it is also necessary to make certain investments. Setting up an
IPO does not always lead to an improvement in the economic performance of the company. A
continuing expenditure has to be incurred after the setting up of an IPO by the parent company. A lot
of expenses have to be incurred in the form of legal fees, printing costs and accounting fees, which are
connected to the registering of an IPO. Such expenses might cost hundreds of US dollars. Apart from
such enormous costs, there are other factors as well that should be taken into consideration by the
company while introducing an IPO. Such factors include the rules and regulations involved to set up
public offerings and this entire process on the other hand involve a number of complexities which
sometimes require the services of the experts in relevant fields. Some companies hire ... Show more

their individual demands to be met as they owe a certain percentage of stakes in the company. The
SEC regulations require notification from the shareholders of the company, meetings and also
approvals from them while making important business decisions. A major risk with shareholders is
that, they can sell off their stocks any time they want, in case they see the price band of the stakes of

Greek Mythology Of Ancient Greece
Beautiful architecture, democracy, theatre, and the Olympic games; these are just a few of the many
wonders Ancient Greece had to offer. However, one of the most memorable creations of Ancient
Greece would have to be Greek mythology. These myths included hundreds of stories and teachings
that would have a lasting effect on Greek culture for centuries to come. When taking a deeper look
into some of these myths, one may notice gender and sexual behavior to be themes that occur quite
frequently. One also cannot help but notice that some social conditions in Ancient Greece, such as the
importance of beauty, the treatment of women, and beast like sexual behavior, revolved around sex
and gender. It is because of the use of gender and sexual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of these myths regarding sexual behavior include sexual relations with some sort of animal. An
example of this is the story of Leda and the Swan. Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome, a
book by E.M. Berens, explains that Zeus came down in the form of a swan to consort with Leda
(Berens 34). The result of this encounter was the birth of Helen and Pollux. Leda was one of the many
mortal consorts of Zeus which gives an idea of how common this was in Greek mythology. Another
example of bestiality in Greek myths is the story of Pasiphae and the bull. As told in Apollodorus,
after disobeying the word of Poseidon by not sacrificing a bull he was sent; Minos, ruler of Crete, was
punished. However, his punishment was not cast upon him, rather Pasiphae, his wife. Pasiphae
became passionate for a bull and with help from Daedalus, an architect, created a contraption to assist
in achieving sex with this animal. The contraption was a success and Pasiphae gave birth to Asterius,
who is then named the Minotaur (Apollodorus. 3.1.4). In this story bestiality is taken a step further.
Not only does Pasiphae have intercourse with the bull, but she goes as far as leaving her human form
to do so. This beast like sexual behavior rippled from these stories into the culture and society of
Ancient Greece.
One way we see this ripple effect is the occurrence of incest in Ancient Greece. In Consubstantiality,

American Institutional And Intellectual Life Essay
The issue of slavery in the United States has been hotly debated for centuries. Historians continuously
squabble over the causes and effects of America s capitalistic, industrial form of slavery. But two of
the most heavily discussed questions are whether the institution of slavery destroyed African culture in
America, and whether it reduced slaves to a child like state of dependency and incompetence.
Anthropologist Melville Herskovits, and historian Stanley Elkins both weigh in on this debate:
Herskovits with, The Myth of the Negro Past, and Elkins with, Slavery: A Problem in American
Institutional and Intellectual Life. In, Slavery: A Problem in American Institutional and Intellectual
Life, Elkins asserts that African culture was all but destroyed by a repression of the slaves rights, at
the hands of their masters. He claims that complete dependence on their masters and a lack of
collective cultural identity and family bonds, reduced slaves to a child like state of helplessness and
ignorance, and childish behavior called the Sambo . Herskovits takes a different stance in this debate.
In, The Myth of the Negro Past, he claims that African culture was not completely destroyed by
slavery, and that the Sambo stereotype was no more than a myth or at least a gross generalization. He
uses slave revolts and the persistence of African culture in American in music, dance, and language as
evidence to prove this. Stanley Elkins argues in, Slavery: A Problem in American

Things could change, Gabe, Jonas went on. Things could be different. I don t know how, but there
must be some way for things to be different. There could be colors. And grandparents, he added,
staring through the dimness toward the ceiling of his sleeping room. And everybody would have the
memories. In this quote, Jonas is explaining to Gabe that things are going to change and that the real
world is very different from the utopian society in which Jonas thought he was living in for 12 years.
Jonas from the Giver changed and matured in many ways. One notable way that Jonas changed was
through the colors he started to see when he got assigned to be The Giver. ...now he saw the familiar

Therefore, he is the only one who knows about the distorted society in which he lives in. Jonas didn t

because it s easier to imagine than it is to do. Something that you can close your eyes and picture it

Reproducibility Of Man Essay
Reproducibility of Man
When Walter Benjamin wrote The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction in 1969, I am
sure he didn t expect it to parallel the arguments of today s discussions on the ethics of cloning. In the
short shadow of the replication of Dolly the sheep, and five little piglets from Virginia comes the
discussion on if this practice should really be allowed, and if so, what limits do you set? How can you

With the right amount of money, this could actually happen. Others worry that interests would be sure
to make clones of great athletes and other idols of pop culture, rock singers, movie stars, and the like,
and, even worse, that temporary, parochial standards of beauty and human excellence might be frozen
into flesh (Ferre 2). Inevitably, racist preferences would surface and those with the power of this
technology would use it to distort human genetic history, reflecting their conscious and unconscious
prejudices. This leads to human population evolving into a society where everything is alike,
somewhat of a cloning holocaust. During long periods of history, the mode of human sense perception
changes with humanity s entire mode of existence (Benjamin 31). If someone decides they no longer
desire that type of person they have selected, how do you go about finding a new candidate to clone if
you have already eliminated every other type of person? Walter Benjamin wrote about original

Without support from executive management, social networks may never gain a proper foothold
throughout the organization. Management must set the pace for line staff to follow and adopt.
Therefore, if it s not important to senior management, it most likely won t be important to the
workforce as a whole. According to the case and additional research, most companies are not
providing the incentive that staff requires to be motivated to use these tools. The article states that only
22 percent of social software users believe the technology to be necessary to their jobs. Hence training
on these new tools and the role they play within an organization is a critical factor that can lead to
failure or success. It is therefore crucial that management in cooperates training and effectively
communicates the importance of these tools to the general workforce. Management should not assume
that because employees are used to participating on social networks like Facebook that they will adopt
to internal social networks as easily. If employees are used to collaborating and doing business
effectively in more traditional ways like sending emails, then they will need an incentive to use social
software. Organization Organization needs to understand the value of Social Networking for both
internal and external business. Once this is done, the efforts to convince the line staff would be easier.

Trying To Teach My Little Sisters How To Read
If you think that teaching is for you, then I suggest trying to teach two five year old little girls to read

things I have ever done. The weekend I taught Carlee and Kalee how to read will always play over in
my mind. This is the story of the week that I went insane trying to teach my little sisters how to read.
It was the summer of 2013, the weekend before Carlee and Kalee started Kindergarten. They had just
turned five and they were as fun loving and energetic as ever. They had been going to a program
called, HIPPIE, all last school year. That program can help kids in many ways, including the basics on
how to read. However, the twins still weren t the brightest fish in the sea. They needed some help, and
mom thought that I should be the one to teach them.
The good thing was that the twins were all for the idea of me teaching them how to read. They were
excited, and that was good! First, we went to the library to get books. I told them they were only
allowed to get two books each. Carlee was able to find two really easy stories that she liked. Kalee on

The Extraordinary Jimi Hendrix Essay
The extraordinary performances, recording, and lyrics of James Marshall Hendrix have made him

After aimlessly wandering for awhile, Hendrix found himself in Atlanta and once again teamed up

He hooked up with Richard for a third time during the summer of 1964 to record an album in which
he again felt confined as being only a backup to Little Richard (Wolters, Pre Experience ).
Hendrix later joined the budding musician Arthur Lee, but the partnership did not last long as he once
again set out in search of his own identity (Wolters, Pre Experience ). He embarked as a traveling
musician for various tours backing such artists as Ike and Tina Turner, Muddy Waters, Elmore James,
B.B. King, Chuck Berry, King Curtis, Solomon Burke, Chuck Jackson, Jackie Wilson, and several
others (Wolters, Hendrix ).
On his next endeavor, he teamed up with saxophonist Lonnie Youngblood. The pair was short lived as
Hendrix soon split, and his adventurous spirit ended him up in New York where he rented a small,
cheap apartment and drifted from job to dead end job (Wolters, Pre Experience ).

West Memphis 3: Wrongfully Accused?
On May 5th, 1993 three eight year old boys were reported missing in West Memphis, Arkansas. The
boys were found the next day, hog tied in a wooded area called Robin Hood Hills . After the case had
been thoroughly investigated, the West Memphis Police announced on the news that they had found
the murderers, pointing fingers at Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin, three
teenagers who were different from the norm in West Memphis, making it easy for them to be accused.
I believe the boys were wrongfully accused of this crime because there is a lack of evidence in the
case pointing to the boys, and the crime just seems to convenient for these three to actually pull off.
During the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The strange thing about the thirty ish minute recorded confession , Jessie made many mistakes about
the facts in the case, stating that they boys were tied together with rope instead of shoe laces. He also
messed up some facts, saying it happened during the day , but was quickly corrected by the police.
(Paradise Lost) After being questioned for 12 hours and finally giving a confession, the police, instead
of letting Jessie go home as promised, arrested Miskelley which is when he revoked his whole
statement but it was no longer on record. Echols and Baldwin were arrested. Misskelley s trial was
sepereate from Echols and Bladwins, but all three were found guilty of capital murder charges.
Throughout this case, many pieces of evidence came up missing and many other people who should
have been suspects went without being questioned at all. For example, a problem arose at a local
Bojangles, the same night of the murders. The manager working at the time called the police,
reporting that a black man had stumbled into the restaurant. He was bleeding and mumbling the
manger said, and instead of a report being filed, the working officer found it would be much more
convenient for her if she just

Life In London, England In The 1500 s
London, England The Late 1500s
The Elizabethan era, named for Queen Elizabeth who reigned from 1558 1603, was a very relaxed
time in England because no wars or conflicts were happening at the time (Davis 231). Many people
believe that all people lived wonderful lives in the Elizabethan era, yet most people were poor and
lived hard lives. Undeniably the span of life is shorter in the sixteenth century than it will be in
subsequent ages (Davis 162). Important parts of life in London during the Elizabethan era were social
classes, living conditions, recreation, education, and gender inequality.
During the Elizabethan era in England, there were four main social classes: the nobles, the gentry, the
yeomen, and the poor (Lace 42). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women weren t allowed to go to school or act in plays (Davis 91). Women had little rights and were
considered property of their father or husband and not as their own person (Davis 90). Rich women
that had servants spent their time gossiping to one another and playing cards (Davis 91).
Although there were no wars during the Elizabethan era, life was hard for most people. There were
four different social classes determined by how much money people had and what they did for a living
(Lace 42 46). There was trash in the streets and poor sanitation. Boys went to school while girls stayed
home and learned how to run the house from their mothers (Davis 91). People generally worked long
hours during the week and spent the weekends doing activities and attending plays (Davis 341).
Generally the Elizabethan era was good for wealthy people and could be a struggle for poor people

Short And Long Term Effects Of The Civil War Essay
In 1776, the Civil War began. Most believe war started over the moral issue of slavery, which was a
huge conflict in society but in fact it started over the economic standpoint of slavery and political
control. A key issue though, was states rights. The South wanted authority over the federal
government so they could abolish federal laws that they didn t support. Territorial expansion was
another factor in the breakout of the Civil War. The South wanted slavery in the Western territories
while the North was committed to being against slavery. While this was going on, a republican party
was forming with members who were strongly against westward expansion of slavery, basically taking
the North s side. In 1860 when Abraham Lincoln took office, it was made clear to the South that
slavery was not going to expand westward. Therefore, the seven states in the South seceded from the
Union forming the Confederate States of America, leading to the start of the Civil War. April 12th,
1861 a battle broke out at Fort ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A lasting effect of the war was the emancipation of the slaves. It was inevitable that the North was
going to win for a number of reasons. To start off, the North had a demographic advantage over the
South. Since there were more civilians in the North than there were in the South, their army was
always larger. The Confederacy didn t even have a great Navy. Without a strong Navy, the
Confederacy would never be able to really hurt the Union by disrupting it s economy and blockading
its ports. Also, most of the battles took place on Northern territories so they knew the land. In 1862,
the North had captured New Orleans as well. This is important because New Orleans was the major
port for the Confederacy. So to capture it, meant that the South s economy was going to collapse soon

Factory Girls By Leslie Chang
In her novel Factory Girls, Leslie Chang offers an insider s perspective of the Chinese export business
that ultimately exposes the true colors of factory life in China to the people of the western society.
Throughout the novel, she cites historical reasoning as to why a sudden growth in factory workers has
occurred and how it has turned into the monstrous industry that it is now. Mainly, she credits the large
migration of people from the rural areas to the cities because this caused major political reform. The
PRC were then able to move into the global economy with a new strategy, given by Deng Xiao Ping,
which consequently caused trade to open up and certain cities to be designated as placeholders for
economic development with the potential for newer business. Most importantly, the reestablishment of
the hukou system in the early sixties, preceding the failure of Mao s Great Leap Forward plan,
affected factories in China heavily. By law, every worker in the city needed a hukou, an urban
residence permit, in order to be allowed to work. This created a huge conflict between China s urban
and rural citizens as it was made extremely difficult for people from rural areas to get hukous, which
of course everyone wanted (Naughton, pg. 118). Because of this, the urban and rural areas started to
develop in very different ways since city folk had primary access to food, even during the nationwide
famine. However, even with the societal uproar, the Chinese government did not make

My Internship At Wbrc Fox6 News
If you like working in a fast paced environment, the news industry is the place to be. Walking into the
news field I had a few ideas of what to expect, as in working holidays, finding unique stories to cover
and being inside a noisy news room. During my internship at WBRC FOX6 News, I learned how to
operate multiple cameras and other equipment in the studio for different news segments. I was able to
work with a variety of reporters, learn about their experience from being on camera and going out in
the field to cover different stories. The most interesting thing I learned was that if a reporter is not able
to make it back to the station in time to get their package made, they can use their laptop to edit their
footage and still send it in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also people who watched some of my videos were able to understand the message I was trying to get
across. I could see a huge difference from the beginning and I began to be more calm and relaxed.
When I first did a stand up I put emphasis on everything and when covering stories every word doesn t
need emphasis put on them. I decided to meet with Collin Gaston, who is the general manager at FOX
6. He asked how my internship was going and I told him what I enjoyed the most and also he gave me
some wonderful feedback about if this was something I really wanted to do. After speaking with
Gaston I sat down with Mark Glover, who is an Assistant News Director for FOX 6 and let him view
my current projects. What I like the most was his criticism, because that will help me on my next
stand ups. After he watched my videos he noticed I tend to be energetic, voice is great, but when the
video is ending I fall back. However, when I am delivering a stand up I tend to focus more on what I
m saying than actually giving out the message. Any advice that Glover gave me, I wrote down so now
I know what to work on and also I can be more prepared for more stand ups. The biggest thing I m
still working on is pronunciation, speaking clearly and making sure I save all my work, because a few
stand ups I did weren t saved right so they got deleted.

Negative Effects Of Photoshop On Teens
The Effects of Photoshop on Teens
To stop the negative impact of Photoshop on teenagers, photographers should only use Photoshop for
the good of photography and not to give false images of the social norm. In opposition, many would
state that Photoshop provides beauty and promotes financial in marketing. The primary objective is to
get money for false looks. American culture is highly obsessed with beauty. Everywhere you go there
are advertisements and misleading images. Whether it s for models or food alterations are used to sell
the image. Models appearances on these photos are admired and sought after from the society. Jessica
Walker stated in an interview I do not think Photoshop is bad I use it to make my photos better, but I
don t like what people use it for...The user and its intentions are bad not the program itself (Walker).
The issue is defined as the images being presented giving a false perception. These photos have been
tampered with by professionals, in which they think that their model is what society wants to see. Both
genders are being affected by the medias view of body image. However, women and teenagers
changed the most. Teenage girls have continuously been presented with images that they are supposed
to look like, which is unrealistic images. Photoshop causes some teens to have self esteem issues and
many other disorders.
In opposition, many would state that Photoshop gives beauty and promotes financial in marketing.
America is surrounded by money. For instance, studies show that America s primary export is
entertainment, while other countries exports include textile, spices, etc. In opposition, many other
countries are putting a stop to the false advertisement of models. For example, France has proposed a
bill asking editors to put a health warning on ads or photos that have been retouched, so that women
know that their bodies can no look that way. Editors of magazines portray their models as being thin,
young, and full faced, which are from technology, not the actual model. For example, when Meghan
Trainor appeared on a past cover of a magazine, she seemed to have a bigger hip than usual. She then
took this issue to the media and put the actual picture side by side. Many editorials

Outline The Cyclic Nature Of The Sun
The sun produces three types of emissions that reach Earth electromagnetic radiation, solar wind, and
neutrinos.
The sun produces electromagnetic radiation of all wavelengths, with the visible spectrum being the
most intense wavelength range produced as the radiation peaks at this area of the EM spectrum. The
Earth s atmosphere absorbs most of this radiation but light and radio waves are able to penetrate the
atmosphere, as well as short wavelength infrared rays and long wavelength microwaves. X rays and
gamma rays are absorbed by the Earth s upper atmosphere.
Solar wind is a continuous stream of charged particles protons and electrons with some atomic nuclei.
It is produced by the hydrogen fusion reactions at the Sun s core with ... Show more content on

Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, believed the idea that the Earth was fixed at the centre of the Universe
and that the other planets were embedded in a series of concentric crystalline spheres surrounding the
Earth. He proposed that 56 different crystalline spheres rotated about the Earth at different rates. Each
planet, the Sun, and the moon were in their own sphere surrounding the Earth, and the stars were
placed on the largest sphere surrounding everything else.
About two centuries after Aristotle, Hipparchus showed that the model better predicted the motion of
the heavens if the Earth was placed slightly off the centre of rotation of the celestial spheres.
Apollonius also proposed that the planets changed their speed through the heavens and sometimes
stopped and travelled backwards.
This particular model of the universe mainly evolved around Aristotle s observational evidence of the
time in which he lived, which supported the idea demonstrated in the model. In this theory, the motion
of things naturally moves to the centre of the Earth and the only way to separate from it was to have a
force applied to the

Aboriginals Are The Indigenous People Of Australia
Aboriginals are the indigenous people of Australia. Australia was invaded by the British in 1788 and
forced the Aboriginals off their land and into training camps and reserves (Murray, 2001). The
Aboriginal population greatly declined due to diseases introduced by the British and the lack of
nutrition; the invasion also disconnected nations from one another (Murry, 2001). There are over five
hundred nations in Australia, and many of them are still hunter gathers living in remote areas of
Australia (Altman, 2007). All of the nations articulate through different languages (Riley, 2014).
Every nation trades, marries, and shares resources with other nations; in order to communicate with
the other nations, many aboriginals are able to speak multiple ... Show more content on

Aboriginals believe that people and the environment are split into two halves: one half mirrors the
other which represents land, air, water, and geographical features (Riley, 2014). They also believe that
to understand the universe, the two mirror images must come together. In traditional nations and
languages, they have their own guidelines for moiety (Riley, 2014). Children will either inherit the
mother s or the father s moiety and can only marry someone with a different moiety (Riley, 2014).
People who have the same moiety are considered siblings and support one another (Riley, 2014).
When support is provided by someone, it is to be paid back by either the person receiving the support
or by someone in the family (Riley, 2014). Aboriginals don t have cousins comparable to modern
cultures; they have brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers (Riley, 2014).
Totems
Totems comprise the second level of the kinship system; they create a balance among the nations
(Riley, 2014). Every person receives their own totem which becomes their responsibility, and each
person has four totems that represent their nation, clan, family and individuality (Riley, 2014). Totems
link a person to the universe and symbolize their strengths and weaknesses (Riley, 2014). The totems
from the nation, clan, and family are predetermined, but the individual totem is given by an elder in
the community; it can be received at a young age or later in life when their identity is determined

  • 2. The Vietnam War On The Movie, Platoon, As A Portal Platoon The Vietnam War was one the most controversial wars in America. This paper is meant to examine the Vietnam War using the movie, Platoon, as a portal. Analyzing scenes in the movie and how they pertain to the films ideology. The paper will look at the struggles presented in war from the outlook of the grunt. It will look at the pro war and anti war view of propaganda. It will look at the good and evil, right and wrong, conflicts in the film. How do these messages reflect the reality of the war? Is the agenda to create a vision of reality or is the film simply a form of entertainment? The film, Platoon, is the perspective of the Vietnam War in 1967 through the eyes of Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen). Chris leaves school to enlist in combat and once he starts he quickly questions his decision. He has two officers, Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger) and Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe). The two officers have different views; Barnes, who wants revenge because he believes that the VC (Viet Cong) ground troops are being safeguarded by a local village, and Elias, who has a more peaceful, less violent demeanor. Tension builds between Barnes and Alias until Barnes shoots a villager in the head, Elias intervenes preventing annihilation of the village inhabitants. This event causes the platoon to split into two camps which pit against each other, causing conflict with the enemy and the men in the platoon. The film will be examined using the ideological film theory. The film ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Marita s Bargain Summary Malcolm Gladwell s essay, Marita s Bargain; is a text all high school students should read to motivate them to do their best in high school because it relates to us how success is not defined by your social class, how the struggles of outside pressure and how that affects high school students in school, and how high school students feel about how much time goes into a school. In the paper by Malcolm Gladwell, Marita s Bargain; he writes about a school in New York called the KIPP Academy in New York, where the circumstances of this school are bad. Gladwell gives his us a description telling us the scenario that helps us get the point that social class doesn t describe the intellect of a student by stating, It is a squat, gray 1960s era building across the street from a bleak looking group of high rises. (Gladwell, 3) and Roughly half of the students are African American; the rest are Hispanic. Three quarters of the children come from single parent homes. Ninety percent qualify for free or reduced lunch, which is to say that their families earn so little that the federal government chips in so the children can eat properly at lunchtime. (Gladwell, 3 4) These two quotes from page 3 describes the living conditions of the lower class people, they live in gray 1960 era looking building with a single parent home that doesn t even get enough income to get their kids lunch to where ninety percent of the kids qualify for free or reduced lunch provided by the government. ... • 4. What Are The Similarities Between The Lost And Lord Of The... The essences of human nature share a respectable number of similarities, more than one may assume. Humans strive to secure, at the very least, four, primary essentials: food, water, shelter, and fire. This scenario is evidently seen in both the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and the modern television show, Lost . In both applications, a group of complete strangers is stranded on a mysterious island, encountering a lack of basic necessities, sanity, and hope. Nevertheless, every character unambiguously lived in varying ways: from a savage tribe to an orderly democracy. Unsurprisingly, these two mediums demonstrate similar aspects in their storyline, imagery, and, most vitally, the characters. Based on the analysis of Lord of the ... We ll have to have Hands up like at school....I ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he s speaking. (Golding 33). In this scenario, Ralph utilized the conch as a symbol of law and order. By controlling who had the ability to speak, the serene, civilized tone of the processions would be maintained, which was something Ralph profoundly endeavored for. Furthermore, in chapter five, when Ralph signalled a meeting to discuss the boys uncivilized acts, he reasserted several points to reinitiate order. Ralph stated that [y]ou voted me for chief. Now you do what I say...So remember. The rocks for a lavatory. Keep the fire going and smoke showing as a signal, Don t take fire from the mountain. Take your food up there. (Golding 81). Once again, Ralph portrayed his civilized character by pleading for the boys to perform various tasks in an orderly fashion. These mandates were devised to eradicate the possibles of an unstructured society where the boys would be oblivious to the importance of stability and, even more crucially, ... Honest Iago, good Iago, many names for the character who created so much chaos throughout Shakespeare s classic tragedy Othello. Iago manipulated everyone; he went out of his way to destroy Othello s relationships with Desdemona, take everything from Rodrigo, and the effort to destroy Cassio. Othello killed Desdemona because he though Iago was his friend and would never lie. Iago was a very toxic friend since the start and knew exactly how the story would end because he had everyone wrapped around his finger. Rodrigo was another victim that payed for Iago s wrath towards Othello, envy towards Cassio, and overall greed for money and power, all of which are deadly sins. Iago charmed Rodrigo with the idea that he could have his one true desire; the fair Desdemona. Iago never cared for Rodrigo and though he was pathetic as did the audience because he was constantly whiny. Rodrigo was also gullible and very desperate to win Desdemona s affection. In act 2 scene 3 Rodrigo is very emotional over that fact he feels he will never get Desdemona because Iago is not giving him results and ends up saying I will incontinently drown myself. . Iago again out of self need helps Rodrigo so he will not kill himself. The reason he stops Rodrigo is because he is the source of his money, and he knows he will need him in the future for his plan. He does end up becoming part of his plan in helping destroy Cassio, but Rodrigo dies at the hands of Iago so that Iago would look like a hero and the one person who knew his plan is dead. • 6. Borderland SOC 248T: Post Soviet Paradoxes Ryan Kelley Professor Shevchenko November 16, 2016 Response to The Bulgarian Borderland by L. Melishkevich SUMMARY Main Claim of Paper: Religious divisions in Madan (and other Bulgarian towns in the Rhodope region) are produced by a religious borderland in which individuals grapple with ideological conflict and tension, characterized by Eastern vs. Western influences. Support: Factual information and quotes from Muslim Lives in Eastern Europe; Supportive information (for comparisons) from other books/places examined this semester. CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK (with some complimentary questions) Argument: Pushing back against Ghodsee s notion that Madan is unique due to the combination of its large Muslim populations and the collapse of GORUBSO, the paper builds off past discussions of borderland (with Where the World Ended and Consecution and Social Change) to argue that a religious borderland is responsible for divisions in the Bulgarian Muslim population. The aim of the study is to investigate whether or not having an offshore occupation has a detrimental impact on the dynamic of the family, particularly in relation to the spouse and their children. BACKGROUND There appears to be a gap in the literature concerning the adaptions to families whilst the male role figure is away for weeks at a time, despite major s changes that have occurred across the industry. However, Gibson (2012) believed that children are competent to act as informants regarding their experiences. Yet, it is important to ensure there are no significant power differences between the adults and the children. Moreover, it is imperative for the children to understand why they have been asked to participate and aware that they are allowed to make their own decisions about participation, hence why an age restriction has been implemented. The participants will be collected using the purposive sampling method, in environments such as the work place or social events. The purposive sampling technique was selected as it is an effective method for collecting participants in qualitative studies. The technique is constructed to allow the researcher to deliberately select specific persons for their research (Teddie and Yu 2007). Data Analysis Focus groups have been renowned for its inherently complex data analysis. It requires an experienced researcher to identify the themes that have emerged throughout the discussions, to ensure no bias tailoring has been made to support theoretical assumptions. Therefore, the data collected from the focus group will be transcribed by the researcher using the audio recorder. The data will be analysed using thematic analysis which involves identifying and coding the key themes that have emerged. Thematic analysis is a widely used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Block Codes Communication systems consist of transmitter, channel, and receiver. The latter can be affected by a noise source, such as the Additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN) which, in turn, can cause a change in the data transmission. As a result of data change or corruption, the idea of channel coding was introduced as a reliable solution to overcome this dilemma. Nowadays, we use some techniques as Forward error correction (FEC) to reduce the errors that might appear during the information transmission over the channel. In this technique, the system adds redundant (extra) bits to identify if a specific bit is corrupted or not and correct it. FEC Channel codes may be classified into two main categories: the Convolutional Code and the Block Code. On ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, block coding is a memory less operation as code words are independent from each other. In contrast, the output of a convolutional encoder doesn t only depend on the current input information, but also depends on the previous inputs or outputs; either on a block by block or a bit by bit basis. Each kind of block codes gets a special generation matrix and a decoding matrix. Unfortunately, the main disadvantage of block codes is that we cannot extract the information until the whole code is received. In addition, the entire block has to be retransmitted in case of error. Convolutional encoders: In several applications the message bits are transmitted serially rather than blocks. In such cases, it is not preferred to use a buffer. Thus, the use of convolutional codes may be the optimum method as it generates redundant bits by using modulo 2 convolutions hence the name of the coder. The convolutional encoder can be represented as a finite state machine (FSM) with a given number of shift register stages. For example, if there is a K stage shift registers (usually D flip flops) with a rate of encoder input bits to its output is 1/n and L bits length message, so the coded output sequence will have the length of n (L+K) bits . The most common convolutional encoders have the following parameters: K=2 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After President Bush took office, a government scientist prepared testimony for a Congressional committee in regards to the dangerous effects of industrial uses of coal and other fossil fuels in contributing to global warming. Poverty causes stress on marriages as well as within a family. Hunger and lack of other necessities led to frustration and strained relationships. Families were split and torn apart. And when families fall apart, so does the nation. The family is the core foundation of teamwork, cooperation, understanding, and commitment. First, there was a great number of casuaIties received at the hospitals in a short period of time; second, many patients had been overboard at some point and were covered with fuel oil; third, there was a very high percentage of burn cases (Hayden). How did the hospitals handle all of these tragedies at once and remain successful? Just 36 hours before the air raid, a lecture was given to all the medical personnel in the area about how to handle the quantities of wounded in an attack setting. After, they had a scenario were stress was placed on the personnel to quickly and adequately clean wounds by soap and water, followed by the surgical removal of lacerated or contaminated tissue. Three criteria were to be fulfilled: (1) obtaining normal color, (2) bleeding, and (3) muscle contraction. When this was completed, the next step was to place in the wound an adequate amount of a sulfonamide drug, either sulfanilamide and sulfathiazole. • 13. Charles Dickens Beliefs Charles Dickens is a well known name, most commonly associated with the classic Christmas novel, A Christmas Carol. However, there are numerous elements about him not as widely known. For instance, Dickens view of Christianity were eccentric, and he was passionate about social reform in his time. Some of his lesser known writings and works attest to this. Regardless of his beliefs, he has had an enduring impact on the world. Charles Dickens was a different type of Christian. Contrary to most, he saw no importance in tradition and scripture. He disliked every form of organized Christianity, especially evangelicalism and Roman Catholicism. His writing consisted of only the most generic form of Christianity, never specifying denomination or other. This is because Charles Dickens himself only believed that there was God, as in a higher authority. He also viewed Jesus as a comforter of the distressed, not as the savior of mankind. Due to his beliefs, Charles Dickens took it upon himself to write The Life of Our Lord, his own simplified translation of the Gospels. His beliefs and actions were far from what is considered Christian today. Though Dickens beliefs may not have been traditional in his time or the modern era of today, he proved to be morally strong and stood out as a passionate social reformer. Dickens views on society were established at a young age. Beginning at age 12, Dickens was forced to work at a shoe blacking factory due to his father s imprisonment in ... Genius and Madness in Christopher Smart s My Cat Jeoffry A series of verses commencing with the word for , Christopher Smart s My Cat Jeoffry is surprisingly modernistic and intriguing. Written while Smart was confined in a mental asylum for incessant praying, the aphoristic poem praises the cat Jeoffry, a faithful servant to God. Unrestricted by rigid poetic structures, My Cat Jeoffry is nevertheless organized and coherent, ablaze with a current of religious fervour. It is impossible to know if the poem was inspired by genius or by madness, but it is infused with sanity and truth. While the poem is about a cat s devotion to God through its daily actions, Smart s My Cat Jeoffry also serves as a lesson to humankind. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Is Smart perhaps inserting his characteristic wit into My Cat Jeoffry and alluding to John Wesley s (1703 1791) dictum cleanliness is next to godliness ? Superior to other animals due to the dexterity of his movements (40, 71), Jeoffry is able to serve God asleep and awake, as emphasized in Smart s parallel lines For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest./For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion (44 45). Jeoffry s abilities to influence those around him is also brought into light in the parallel lines For he is hated by the hypocrite and miser./For the former is afraid of detection./For the latter refuses the charge (57 59). Jeoffry, even when his day s work is done (23), continues to work in God s grace by keeping the Devil at bay with his electrical skin glaring eyes (25). This use of diction seems absurd, and one wonders if Smart is not fooling his audience all along. Echoing William Blake s The Tiger and his Four Fold Vision by the vivid descriptions of his Angel Tiger (29), Smart hints that there exist multiple layers in My Cat Jeoffry . Without a doubt, Jeoffry s life can be paralleled to that of humankind. However, what kind of person does Smart speak of? Examples Of Racial Inequalities In Education Racial and Socioeconomic Inequalities in Education Topic: Inequalities in education Purpose: Examine issues of inequality in education in regard to race and socioeconomic status Thesis: Public education is mandatory for youths across our country, with the intention of preparing them for the world, yet, statistics indicate that students of color aren t receiving the same attention or resources as their white counterparts. I say to you, quite frankly, that the time for racial discrimination is over. Is a statement that most people can get behind in today s world, where news of racial injustice sprouts up seemingly every day from across the globe. The call for equality in the United States has been around since its genesis as a colony, with different eras finding various cases of success. Such examples could include: the abolition of slavery, the legalization of interracial marriage or the desegregation of public schools. Even with these cases, and many others, standing tall as marks of progress, our country could use further reform in the education department. It has become apparent, through much research, that desegregating schools by law doesn t clean up the internal prejudice present in many of our classrooms today. Before we delve into displays of racism in our modern institution, a briefing of how this dilemma has persisted for the duration of our history may provide some useful insight. However, one of the most memorable creations of Ancient Greece would have to be Greek mythology. These myths included hundreds of stories and teachings that would have a lasting effect on Greek culture for centuries to come. When taking a deeper look into some of these myths, one may notice gender and sexual behavior to be themes that occur quite frequently. One also cannot help but notice that some social conditions in Ancient Greece, such as the importance of beauty, the treatment of women, and beast like sexual behavior, revolved around sex and gender. An example of this is the story of Leda and the Swan. Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome, a book by E.M. Berens, explains that Zeus came down in the form of a swan to consort with Leda (Berens 34). The result of this encounter was the birth of Helen and Pollux. Leda was one of the many mortal consorts of Zeus which gives an idea of how common this was in Greek mythology. Another example of bestiality in Greek myths is the story of Pasiphae and the bull. As told in Apollodorus, after disobeying the word of Poseidon by not sacrificing a bull he was sent; Minos, ruler of Crete, was punished. However, his punishment was not cast upon him, rather Pasiphae, his wife. Pasiphae became passionate for a bull and with help from Daedalus, an architect, created a contraption to assist in achieving sex with this animal. The contraption was a success and Pasiphae gave birth to Asterius, who is then named the Minotaur (Apollodorus. 3.1.4). In this story bestiality is taken a step further. Not only does Pasiphae have intercourse with the bull, but she goes as far as leaving her human form to do so. This beast like sexual behavior rippled from these stories into the culture and society of Ancient Greece. One way we see this ripple effect is the occurrence of incest in Ancient Greece. • 25. American Institutional And Intellectual Life Essay The issue of slavery in the United States has been hotly debated for centuries. Historians continuously squabble over the causes and effects of America s capitalistic, industrial form of slavery. But two of the most heavily discussed questions are whether the institution of slavery destroyed African culture in America, and whether it reduced slaves to a child like state of dependency and incompetence. Anthropologist Melville Herskovits, and historian Stanley Elkins both weigh in on this debate: Herskovits with, The Myth of the Negro Past, and Elkins with, Slavery: A Problem in American Institutional and Intellectual Life. In, Slavery: A Problem in American Institutional and Intellectual Life, Elkins asserts that African culture was all but destroyed by a repression of the slaves rights, at the hands of their masters. He claims that complete dependence on their masters and a lack of collective cultural identity and family bonds, reduced slaves to a child like state of helplessness and ignorance, and childish behavior called the Sambo . Herskovits takes a different stance in this debate. In, The Myth of the Negro Past, he claims that African culture was not completely destroyed by slavery, and that the Sambo stereotype was no more than a myth or at least a gross generalization. He uses slave revolts and the persistence of African culture in American in music, dance, and language as evidence to prove this. Stanley Elkins argues in, Slavery: A Problem in American ... The boys were found the next day, hog tied in a wooded area called Robin Hood Hills . After the case had been thoroughly investigated, the West Memphis Police announced on the news that they had found the murderers, pointing fingers at Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin, three teenagers who were different from the norm in West Memphis, making it easy for them to be accused. I believe the boys were wrongfully accused of this crime because there is a lack of evidence in the case pointing to the boys, and the crime just seems to convenient for these three to actually pull off. During the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The strange thing about the thirty ish minute recorded confession , Jessie made many mistakes about the facts in the case, stating that they boys were tied together with rope instead of shoe laces. (Paradise Lost) After being questioned for 12 hours and finally giving a confession, the police, instead of letting Jessie go home as promised, arrested Miskelley which is when he revoked his whole statement but it was no longer on record. Echols and Baldwin were arrested. Misskelley s trial was sepereate from Echols and Bladwins, but all three were found guilty of capital murder charges. Throughout this case, many pieces of evidence came up missing and many other people who should have been suspects went without being questioned at all. For example, a problem arose at a local Bojangles, the same night of the murders. The manager working at the time called the police, reporting that a black man had stumbled into the restaurant. He was bleeding and mumbling the manger said, and instead of a report being filed, the working officer found it would be much more convenient for her if she just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Life In London, England In The 1500 s London, England The Late 1500s The Elizabethan era, named for Queen Elizabeth who reigned from 1558 1603, was a very relaxed time in England because no wars or conflicts were happening at the time (Davis 231). Many people believe that all people lived wonderful lives in the Elizabethan era, yet most people were poor and lived hard lives. Undeniably the span of life is shorter in the sixteenth century than it will be in subsequent ages (Davis 162). Important parts of life in London during the Elizabethan era were social classes, living conditions, recreation, education, and gender inequality. • 43. Short And Long Term Effects Of The Civil War Essay In 1776, the Civil War began. Most believe war started over the moral issue of slavery, which was a huge conflict in society but in fact it started over the economic standpoint of slavery and political control. A key issue though, was states rights. The South wanted authority over the federal government so they could abolish federal laws that they didn t support. Territorial expansion was another factor in the breakout of the Civil War. The South wanted slavery in the Western territories while the North was committed to being against slavery. While this was going on, a republican party was forming with members who were strongly against westward expansion of slavery, basically taking the North s side. In 1860 when Abraham Lincoln took office, it was made clear to the South that slavery was not going to expand westward. Therefore, the seven states in the South seceded from the Union forming the Confederate States of America, leading to the start of the Civil War. April 12th, 1861 a battle broke out at Fort ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A lasting effect of the war was the emancipation of the slaves. It was inevitable that the North was going to win for a number of reasons. To start off, the North had a demographic advantage over the South. Since there were more civilians in the North than there were in the South, their army was always larger. The Confederacy didn t even have a great Navy. Without a strong Navy, the Confederacy would never be able to really hurt the Union by disrupting it s economy and blockading its ports. Also, most of the battles took place on Northern territories so they knew the land. In 1862, the North had captured New Orleans as well. This is important because New Orleans was the major port for the Confederacy. So to capture it, meant that the South s economy was going to collapse soon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Factory Girls By Leslie Chang In her novel Factory Girls, Leslie Chang offers an insider s perspective of the Chinese export business that ultimately exposes the true colors of factory life in China to the people of the western society. Throughout the novel, she cites historical reasoning as to why a sudden growth in factory workers has occurred and how it has turned into the monstrous industry that it is now. Mainly, she credits the large migration of people from the rural areas to the cities because this caused major political reform. The PRC were then able to move into the global economy with a new strategy, given by Deng Xiao Ping, which consequently caused trade to open up and certain cities to be designated as placeholders for economic development with the potential for newer business. Most importantly, the reestablishment of the hukou system in the early sixties, preceding the failure of Mao s Great Leap Forward plan, affected factories in China heavily. By law, every worker in the city needed a hukou, an urban residence permit, in order to be allowed to work. This created a huge conflict between China s urban and rural citizens as it was made extremely difficult for people from rural areas to get hukous, which of course everyone wanted (Naughton, pg. 118). Because of this, the urban and rural areas started to develop in very different ways since city folk had primary access to food, even during the nationwide famine. However, even with the societal uproar, the Chinese government did not make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Walking into the news field I had a few ideas of what to expect, as in working holidays, finding unique stories to cover and being inside a noisy news room. During my internship at WBRC FOX6 News, I learned how to operate multiple cameras and other equipment in the studio for different news segments. I was able to work with a variety of reporters, learn about their experience from being on camera and going out in the field to cover different stories. I decided to meet with Collin Gaston, who is the general manager at FOX 6. He asked how my internship was going and I told him what I enjoyed the most and also he gave me some wonderful feedback about if this was something I really wanted to do. After speaking with Gaston I sat down with Mark Glover, who is an Assistant News Director for FOX 6 and let him view my current projects. • 46. Negative Effects Of Photoshop On Teens The Effects of Photoshop on Teens To stop the negative impact of Photoshop on teenagers, photographers should only use Photoshop for the good of photography and not to give false images of the social norm. In opposition, many would state that Photoshop provides beauty and promotes financial in marketing. The primary objective is to get money for false looks. American culture is highly obsessed with beauty. Everywhere you go there are advertisements and misleading images. Whether it s for models or food alterations are used to sell the image. Models appearances on these photos are admired and sought after from the society. Jessica Walker stated in an interview I do not think Photoshop is bad I use it to make my photos better, but I don t like what people use it for...The user and its intentions are bad not the program itself (Walker). The issue is defined as the images being presented giving a false perception. These photos have been tampered with by professionals, in which they think that their model is what society wants to see. Both genders are being affected by the medias view of body image. However, women and teenagers changed the most. Teenage girls have continuously been presented with images that they are supposed to look like, which is unrealistic images. Photoshop causes some teens to have self esteem issues and many other disorders. In opposition, many would state that Photoshop gives beauty and promotes financial in marketing. America is surrounded by money. For instance, studies show that America s primary export is entertainment, while other countries exports include textile, spices, etc. In opposition, many other countries are putting a stop to the false advertisement of models. For example, France has proposed a bill asking editors to put a health warning on ads or photos that have been retouched, so that women know that their bodies can no look that way. Editors of magazines portray their models as being thin, young, and full faced, which are from technology, not the actual model. For example, when Meghan Trainor appeared on a past cover of a magazine, she seemed to have a bigger hip than usual. She then took this issue to the media and put the actual picture side by side. The sun produces electromagnetic radiation of all wavelengths, with the visible spectrum being the most intense wavelength range produced as the radiation peaks at this area of the EM spectrum. The Earth s atmosphere absorbs most of this radiation but light and radio waves are able to penetrate the atmosphere, as well as short wavelength infrared rays and long wavelength microwaves. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, believed the idea that the Earth was fixed at the centre of the Universe and that the other planets were embedded in a series of concentric crystalline spheres surrounding the Earth. He proposed that 56 different crystalline spheres rotated about the Earth at different rates. Each planet, the Sun, and the moon were in their own sphere surrounding the Earth, and the stars were placed on the largest sphere surrounding everything else. About two centuries after Aristotle, Hipparchus showed that the model better predicted the motion of the heavens if the Earth was placed slightly off the centre of rotation of the celestial spheres. Apollonius also proposed that the planets changed their speed through the heavens and sometimes stopped and travelled backwards. This particular model of the universe mainly evolved around Aristotle s observational evidence of the time in which he lived, which supported the idea demonstrated in the model. In this theory, the motion of things naturally moves to the centre of the Earth and the only way to separate from it was to have a force applied to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Australia was invaded by the British in 1788 and forced the Aboriginals off their land and into training camps and reserves (Murray, 2001). The Aboriginal population greatly declined due to diseases introduced by the British and the lack of nutrition; the invasion also disconnected nations from one another (Murry, 2001). There are over five hundred nations in Australia, and many of them are still hunter gathers living in remote areas of Australia (Altman, 2007). Aboriginals believe that people and the environment are split into two halves: one half mirrors the other which represents land, air, water, and geographical features (Riley, 2014). They also believe that to understand the universe, the two mirror images must come together. In traditional nations and languages, they have their own guidelines for moiety (Riley, 2014). Children will either inherit the mother s or the father s moiety and can only marry someone with a different moiety (Riley, 2014). People who have the same moiety are considered siblings and support one another (Riley, 2014). When support is provided by someone, it is to be paid back by either the person receiving the support or by someone in the family (Riley, 2014). Aboriginals don t have cousins comparable to modern cultures; they have brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers (Riley, 2014). Totems Totems comprise the second level of the kinship system; they create a balance among the nations (Riley, 2014). Every person receives their own totem which becomes their responsibility, and each person has four totems that represent their nation, clan, family and individuality (Riley, 2014). Totems link a person to the universe and symbolize their strengths and weaknesses (Riley, 2014).
