In Plato s Menon, Socrates and Menon discussed about the nature of virtue and whether it can be

arguments enlightened my idea that virtue consists in the ability to take the responsibility to good

Whether he is being criticized or clarified, it is clear that Mikhail Lermontov in A Hero of Our Time is
challenging the archetype of the Byronic hero. Throughout the novel, Lermontov offers a commentary
on the ideals of a Byronic hero in 19th century Russia and how it has become fashionable to imitate
qualities that were once scorned, especially when compared to the age old ideals of the classic hero.
The classical hero exhibited more traditionally exalted traits: courage, sacrifice, bravery. This is in
clear contrast with the contemporary traits the typical Byronic hero exhibited: an enigmatic sense of
danger, unpredictable selfishness, and an alluring hidden past full of tragedies. Lermontov takes
advantage of this clear division between the old and new ideals by juxtaposing Grushnitsky with
Pechorin to outline some of the more tangible requirements of the Byronic Hero. Simultaneously, he
