Manslaughter Persuasive Essay
Upon Google searching (2017), define manslaughter , one will discover that is is the crime of killing a
human being without malice aforethought, or otherwise in circumstances not amounting to murder. In
other words, manslaughter is the unintentional act of killing a human being. After Google searching
(2017), define murder , it is evident that it is the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by
another. Alternatively, it means one human being plans to kill another human being and does it. Is
taking a person s life due to driving under the influence an intention or unintentional wrongdoing?
Some may attest that the intoxicated driver did not conspire to kill someone, therefore, it is
manslaughter. Others may inquire that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the states in the United States consider driver under the influence and kill someone, vehicular
manslaughter. According to Stim (2015), Alaska, Montana, and Arizona are the only three states that
more often than not charge defendants with murder over manslaughter in vehicular deaths caused by
driving under the influence. To put it in perspective, 94% of the states in the United States prefer
manslaughter convictions over homicide. Vehicular manslaughter is broken down into two divisions.
Vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and vehicular manslaughter with ordinary negligence.
Gross negligence comes from driving that is extremely reckless. Ordinary negligence spawns from the
driver failing to take the precautions as a typical driver, and injury/death is caused. For example, if an
intoxicated driver is swerving all over the road and strikes a car that results in death for the opposing
driver, that would be gross negligence. Now if an intoxicated driver fails to yield properly and t bones
a car that results in death of the other driver, that would be ordinary negligence. If a defendant is
found guilty of vehicular manslaughter, they face at least 4 10 years behind bars for each person
killed. Therefore, if a car has two people in it that were killed, the sentencing can be doubled. In
comparison, if a murder charge sticks, the defendant s sentence can range from 10 years to lifelong
imprisonment. McCurley (2014) argues that both of the drivers involved in the accident could be
found to be intoxicated. If one driver lives and the other dies, why should the driver that survives be
charged with murder? He is saying that both drivers can be at fault as they were both intoxicated. The
reason we lock away homicidal people is because of their mental state. We do not want them to be
able to roam the free world and possibly commit murder again. When people drive under the influence
and take a life, that does

Virtue In Socrates And Menon
In Plato s Menon, Socrates and Menon discussed about the nature of virtue and whether it can be
taught. The definition of virtue varies a lot through the whole conversation. Even though Socrates and
Menon failed to reach a precise definition of virtue after spending amount of time and effort, their
arguments enlightened my idea that virtue consists in the ability to take the responsibility to good
purpose and a willingness to explore and learn. Virtue is not some sort of knowledge that can be
acquired by teaching or through predecessors, instead, being virtuous can be achieved by constantly
discovering and applying true opinions.
To begin with, being able to take the responsibility to good purpose consists a crucial portion of virtue.
Socrates firstly asked Menon the definition of virtue before figuring out if virtue can be taught. Menon
brought up several possible explanations, which, however, were rejected by Socrates. The first one is
that virtue is a specific thing among different people. To illustrate, for instance, for men, virtue is to be
good to friends and to harm the enemies; for women, virtue is to manage the housework and take care
of their family. However, this explanation only showed that various forms of virtue exist among
different people; Menon failed to clearly identify the virtue by pointing out how these examples can
share in common. From my perspective, even though people in the society may have different roles,
they all take responsibilities and make efforts to do their job. More importantly, what they do benefits
either themselves or society and does no harm others. For instance, thieves can not be virtuous
because even though they might make efforts to steal from others, they benefit themselves by
impairing people s interest and disturbing the social order.
Virtue does not consist in justice, instead, justice is one of forms of being virtuous. Menon later
modified his definition of virtue several times; he believed that virtue is the ability to rule with justice
and the ability to obtain justly. Socrates objected his answers because he used one term, which is
justice, to define virtue. From my point of view, being just, however, is only one aspect of being
virtuous. On the other hand,

Our Fractious Foreign Policy Debate
In Fred Baumann s article, Our Fractious Foreign Policy Debate he describes America s unique
approach in dealing with foreign countries from the Vietnam Conflict to the War in
Afghanistan. In Baumann s opinion, the United States sometimes takes an irrational outlook of issues
with other counties and that has gotten the U.S into trouble. He begins by describing the issues that the
United States has faced since Vietnam and how we may have made decisions since then based on a
conflict that happened over three decades ago. He takes a rather controversial take on our countries
foreign policy and by the end of the article questions whether or not our government is making well
founded decisions, and I agree with him completely because the
United States has made critical errors in judgement over the foreign policy since Vietnam.
Baumann starts the discussion on U.S policy by turning his attention to the Vietnam paradigm which
describes how our foreign policy controls itself with political suspicions and moral condemnation for
the use of nearly any type of military deployment(68). Right wing conservatives will tell you that what
we did in Vietnam was to free the people and allow them to be democratic and no longer under North
Vietnamese rule. Baumann believes that when conservatives are in power they tend to fight wars on
their tiptoes(68). The American populations interest in foreign affairs and our government has severely
declined since times like the 70s and
Vietnam.

Examples Of Invasive Species In Ontario
Introduced species are seldom a positive addition to an ecosystem as they cause great stress and harm
to the populations of native species. Many introduced species become invasive as they have no natural
predators in their new environment, therefore they thrive, and crowd out all other animals. Some
examples of invasive species in Ontario waters include the round goby, zebra mussels, eurasian ruffe,
goldfish, northern snakehead, rainbow smelt, and rudd, to name a few. A great example to show how
destructive an introduced fish can be is the asian carp, this species spreads very aggressively and it is
considered the greatest threat to aquatic ecosystems in Ontario. These fish grow to be very large in
size, up to 40 kg and 1 meter long. The asian

Use of DNA in Criminal Investigations Essay
Before the 1980s, courts relied on testimony and eyewitness accounts as a main source of evidence.
Notoriously unreliable, these techniques have since faded away to the stunning reliability of DNA
forensics. In 1984, British geneticist Alec Jeffreys of the University of Leicester discovered an
interesting new marker in the human genome. Most DNA information is the same in every human, but
the junk code between genes is unique to every person. Junk DNA used for investigative purposes can
be found in blood, saliva, perspiration, sexual fluid, skin tissue, bone marrow, dental pulp, and hair
follicles (Butler, 2011). By analyzing this junk code, Jeffreys found certain sequences of 10 to 100
base pairs repeated multiple times. These tandem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
DNA forensics can also narrow down suspect pools, exonerate innocent suspects, and link crimes
together if the same DNA is found at both scenes. However, without existing suspects, a DNA profile
cannot direct an investigation because current knowledge of genotype phenotype relation is too vague
for DNA phenotyping. For example, a profile from a first time offender that has no match in any
database may give the information that the criminal is a left handed male of medium stature with red
hair and freckles. It would be impossible to interview every man who fits that description. However,
with available suspects, DNA forensics has many advantages over other forms of evidence. One is the
longevity of DNA. Although it will deteriorate if exposed to sunlight, it can remain intact for centuries
under proper conditions (Sachs, 2004). Because DNA is so durable, investigators can reopen old cases
to reexamine evidence.
DNA from animals and plants can also be utilized in criminal forensics. One of the most common
applications of this is the analysis of pet hair from a crime scene, which often links its owner to the
crime. DNA fingerprints have also been applied to cannabis plants, and a database is being created to
trace samples to their sources. This has been extremely successful so far, as this technology can
distinguish between closely related, carefully bred plants (Westphal, 2003). Heather Miller Coyle of

China’s One Child Policy Essay
With more than 1.3 billion people, China has to think about a solution and find ways to deal with its
population explosion. In order to have control over population, in 1970, a policy named China s One
Child Policy was introduced. Mingliang argues that, China, through the one child policy, has instituted
the most aggressive, comprehensive population policy in the world (1). This policy limits all families
in the Republic of China to have only one child, regardless of the sex: however, within this policy
there are some exceptions. It is possible to have two children only if the first child is born with a
disability, if parents work in a high risk job, if the couple lives in villages, or if the family is a non
Han, otherwise you are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Mingliang states, the Chinese preference for at least one son is well documented (3). Having two
sons in a family is very unusual in China. Due to the preferences of having sons, the abortion rates
have increased. Abortion is well known in China, as is the missing girls phenomenon. Shaou, Dodge,
and Suter argue that, of the seven million abortions annually in China, the International Planned
Parenthood Federation indicates that more than 70 percent are female unborn children (4). This is a
big percentage, and the number of girls in this country is decreasing every year. People are using
different ways to limit the number of girls. Moreover, if a woman does not want to abort, she is forced
to do so. Bluett argues that, abortions are performed throughout the entire nine month period, even up
to the point of childbirth (3), simply saying the increase in sex ration is caused mainly by son
preference, which is as a tradition in China. It is significant to mention that because of the gender
imbalance, younger generations are facing other problems. According to Bluett, many males are left
without a wife, which leads to an increase in human trafficking (5). The one child policy is causing a
lot of troubles and China has to make sure to reduce the negative effects of this policy. However,
China s one child policy has been effective in some ways. Although, it is true that the

Muslim Group Synthesis Essay
It is hard to imagine a Western society fearing another group of people such as the Jews or Muslims.
Democracy or liberals, are supposed to be champions of minority rights, cultural diversity and civic as
opposed to ethnic nationalism (Parekh, p.5). Instead they are threatening by these groups. The fear the
West shows is a fear of misguidance. They start to see the Muslim make demands of their government
for appropriate for themselves and their children such as hala meat, facilities for prayer, and schools to
teach their children about their history and cultural (Parekh, p.7). Why does this seem so bad? Jews
and Christians both have houses of worship and should we not give the Muslim group one. Also like
the Muslims the Jews also eat hala meat but they call it Kosher. On the issue of the private school, if

This has made other Western states wonder about their own Muslim problem and whether or not
Muslim have now become a source of public anxiety. In Europe, where states have traditionally seen
themselves as nation states based on homogeneous national culture are now dealing with the mass
insurgent of Muslim refugees from the middle east and they need a way to deal with this problem
(Parekh, p.7). Citied earlier in the essay, France passed a veil law that prohibited the use of the hijabs
or any kind veil; this was a sort of assimilation by the French government. In Britain they opted for
integration, in the Netherlands they are using multiculturalism as a way to break the barrels between
the Muslims in their society, and finally other nations have tried one or two of the other models
mentioned in order to deal with their Muslim problem (Parekh,p.7). Even if these states begin to
integrate, assimilate, and even use any other form of system. It will take time and slow

Negative Effects Of Solar Eclipses
With the impending solar eclipse set to darken the skies briefly on Monday afternoon, physicians
across the country are preparing to treat cases of optical damage caused by glaring at the dark sun.
Unfortunately, many people believe that because the sun is blocked, it blocks the harmful ultraviolet
rays from reaching one s eyes, but that is not the case. Assistant professor in the University of
Alabama at Birmingham, Tamara S. Oechslin, explains it is never safe to stare directly into the sun,
and that includes during the eclipse (Janarthanan). But, these eclipses have been occurring for
thousands of years. In fact, the ancient Chinese believed that solar eclipses were dragons devouring
the sun (NASA). Obviously, the general population has come to a much stronger understanding of
what a solar eclipse entails, but they do not necessarily follow guidance related to viewing the eclipse.
In 1999, a solar eclipse occurred and several thousand people rang helplines or attended special
eclipse clinics (Dobson). However, the number of cases of solar retinopathy than was widely feared
(Dobson). Solar retinopathy is the damage caused by someone looking at the sun with improper or no
eye protection. The retina, the home of light sensing cells, is then damaged by the harmful rays of the
sun. Treatment to try and heal the effects of solar retinopathy has proven ineffective (Dobson). Eyes

The Legend of King Arthur Essay
By the ninth century people all over were telling the fabulous tales and romances about Arthur and his
kingdom. The common people heard them sung by bards, while in the court poets wrote different
versions. In each retelling the speaker would select certain details for emphasis and introduce new
elements, so that the story could be adapted to the particular time and audience.
Although most historians believe that there actually did exist an Arthur, they differ on how major his
role was on influencing society during his time.
To understand the most widely accepted view on when and how Arthur gained fame, one must be
aware of the historical time period surrounding Arthur.
The unity that the Roman government imposed on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The passage then continues describing the twelve battles that Arthur fought and won. The last battle,
the greatest in the history of the country, was at Badon Hill. It resulted in a total massacre of the
Saxons, establishing fifty years of peace from the Saxon s horrible brutality of slaughtering, burning
and senseless vandalism (Jenkins 30 31).
Nennius s historical account is backed up by a set of Easter Tables.
They were calculating tables as to when Easter would fall out for the next given number of years and
in them were noted events of outstanding importance. In the annals were two dates regarding Arthur.
The first date is disputed: It is put as either 499 or 518 A.D. The first entry reads: ?Battle of Badon, in
which
Arthur carried the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ on his shoulders for three days and three nights and
the Britons were victors (Jenkins 28).?
The second entry dated 539 reads: The Battle of Camlann, in which Arthur and Modred perished. And
there was plague in Britain and Ireland (Jenkins 28).?
These accounts of Arthur are not only the basis for his fame, but they also show us the broad terrain of
Arthur s military activity. While the Battle of Mount Badon was fought in Southern England, the battle
of Cat Coit Celidon, mentioned in the Historia Brittonum, was fought in Scotland. The implications

the basis for the civil liberties that different groups of people would fight for during the next seventy

Due to these threats, the United States took severe measures to spread democratic ideals to other

The Pursuit Of Happiness Movie Analysis

Life is a struggle for the single father Chris Gardner known as Will Smith. He and his young son
known as Jaden Christopher Syre Smith got evicted from their apartment with no place to go. The
Pursuit Of Happiness directed by Gabrielle Muccino. The Pursuit Of Happiness was released in 2006
and it is 117 minutes long. The genre of the movie is Biography and drama. The important theme in
this movie is about the American Dream. It is a very common dream that we all share. The dream is to
being successful and happy. To fulfill that dream in America you need to have courage and the
abilities to achieve your dream.
The Pursuit Of Happiness is based on a true story about a man called Chris Gardner. Chris Gardner is
a great example for somebody that wants to Pursuit his American Dream. The Pursuit Of Happiness is
about how Chris Gardner is willing to make sure he achieves his happiness. For living, Chris Gardner
is a salesman who sells bone density scanners. Eventually he figured out that nobody wanted to buy it
because it is a luxury device in the medical business. Sometime in the beginning of the movie, there is
a scene where we see Chris Gardner approaching and trying to talk to Mr.Twistle. We see a long shot
of them both which shows us that they both are dressed in suits, which means that they both might be
office workers. The long shot then drifts and became a mid shot. The director could have purposely
done that to show that Mr.Twistle is in a hurry and has no time to speak with Chris. Chris Gardner and
Mr.Twistle got in the same cab. While they are in the same taxi together, we see that Chris is talking to
Mr.Twistle but the close up of Mr.Twistle s face shows that he s not interested in what Chris is saying.
This is because Twistle is just playing with a Rubik s cube. We then see an over the shoulder shot
which shows that it could mean that Chris is desperately wanting to talk to Mr.Twistle. Mr.Twistle
then says to Chris I m sorry, this thing is impossible. The extreme close up of Chris s face shows that
he is determined to do whatever it takes to talk to Mr.Twistle . Again, in the taxi part of the scene we
are only really shown mid shots and close

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Arbutin
Arbutin Arbutin, from the dried leaves of bearberry, blueberry, cranberry, and pear trees, is a naturally
β D glucopyranoside and derivative of hydroquinone. (20, 21, 24) The mechanism of suppressing
melanin production is to competitively inhibit tyrosinase enzyme at binding site and DHICA (5,6

Byronic Hero In Mikhail Lermontov s A Hero Of Our Time
Whether he is being criticized or clarified, it is clear that Mikhail Lermontov in A Hero of Our Time is
challenging the archetype of the Byronic hero. Throughout the novel, Lermontov offers a commentary
on the ideals of a Byronic hero in 19th century Russia and how it has become fashionable to imitate
qualities that were once scorned, especially when compared to the age old ideals of the classic hero.
The classical hero exhibited more traditionally exalted traits: courage, sacrifice, bravery. This is in
clear contrast with the contemporary traits the typical Byronic hero exhibited: an enigmatic sense of
danger, unpredictable selfishness, and an alluring hidden past full of tragedies. Lermontov takes
advantage of this clear division between the old and new ideals by juxtaposing Grushnitsky with
Pechorin to outline some of the more tangible requirements of the Byronic Hero. Simultaneously, he
also uses Grushnitsky as a source of irony, in order to show that the heroes of 19th century Russia are
in fact hollow images based on status and misperceptions as opposed to Classical heroes prior to them.
In Princess Mary, Lermontov reveals how the heroes of 19th century Russia exemplified Byronic traits
to such an extent that they had become fashionable to imitate. In A Hero of Our Time, Lermontov
situates Grushnitsky as a foil to Pechorin to demonstrate how Pechorin serves as an example of the
typical Byronic Hero. There are several moments where the parallelism between

Analyzing the Characteristics of Kind Lear Essay
Analyzing the Characteristics of Kind Lear Lear is the protagonist, whose willingness to believe his
older daughters empty flattery leads to the deaths of many people. In relying on the test of his
daughters love, Lear demonstrates that he lacks common sense or the ability to detect his older
daughters falseness. Lear cannot recognize Cordelia s honesty amid the flattery, which he craves. The
depth of Lear s anger toward Kent, his devoted follower, suggests excessive pride Lear refuses to be
wrong. Hubris leads Lear to make a serious mistake in judgment, while Lear s excessive anger toward
Kent also suggests the fragility of his emotional state. Hubris is a Greek term referring to excessive

Lear wants to remain in charge of his destiny, even though the choices he makes are poor or filled with
danger. Thus, Lear chooses to go out into the storm because he must retain some element of control.
The only other choice is to acquiesce to his daughters control, and for Lear, that option is not worth
considering. Lear is stubborn, like a willful child, and this is just one additional way in which he tries
to deal with the events controlling his life. Lear flees into the storm, as a child flees a reality too harsh
to accept. In spite of his despair and self pity, Lear is revealed as a complex man, one whose
punishment far exceeds his foolish errors, and thus, Lear is deserving of the audience s sympathy.
Eventually, Lear displays regret, remorse, empathy, and compassion for the poor, a population that
Lear has not noticed before. Lear focuses on the parallels he sees to his own life, and so in a real
sense, his pity for the poor is also a reflection of the pity he feels for his own situation. Lear is the
anointed king, God s representative, and thus, he shares the responsibility for dispensing justice on
earth. He recognizes that he bears responsibility for both his own problems and for those of others,
who suffer equally. His understanding of his complicity in the events that followed is a major step in

equity (debt/equity) ratio.

Hester Prynne and Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale are the two main characters of the Scarlet Letter.
While Hester s husband is away, the two commit adultery and keep their affair a secret from the rest of
the town. When the town officials realize that Hester is with child, they imprison her until the trial.
The townspeople want to know who the baby s father is but Hester refuses to tell them, even when her
former husband inquires about it. As her punishment, the officials make her wear a scarlet letter A so
everyone will know what sin she committed. Throughout the book, Hester and Mr. Dimmesdale each

Analysis Of John Updike s A P
John Updike is viewed by his readers as a progressive voice in his work that promotes feminist issues.
He makes these issues stand out more evidently, rather than hidden, in order for the reader to realize
how women are viewed in society. From reading Updike s A P, the story sends the message to readers
of genders working together to strive for equality. If readers do not carefully and actively read A P
they may miss key messages about the power men hold over women, not just in society but in
literature as well. Even though Updike s A P seems to be a story about a teenager finally standing up
to his boss and quitting the job he hates, the tone used reveals the hidden message on how women are
in a male oriented world. The relationship between both men are women are shown as unequals, men
on the top and women always below them, Updike makes sure to open up the reader s eyes in
realizing the way females are being treated unfairly.
The first bathing suit girl who walks into the A P and catches Sammy s immediately looks at the
chunky girl with a two piece plaid bathing suit on that showed off her sweet broad soft looking can
(Updike 157). Sammy goes in detail at pointing out this girl s body features, especially her behind,
those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit (Updike 158). If the girl
knew he was looking at her so intensely how would she feel? How would you feel if that was an
everyday occurrence, getting criticized by your body or

The Digital Media Production Club
When I was a junior in high school, I was curious of how videos were made, so I joined the digital
media production club. In one week we learned the basics of how to create a short film, and it wasn t
as difficult as I thought it would be to create a video. There was many interesting information about
filming, and I had fun producing each project with my club members. We had to create our own
stories or personal perspective of a story into a video. When we want to recreate a movie scene, we
need approval of the scene, and the instructor would make sure we didn t get hurt in the process.
Filmmaking could be for anyone to create wonderful memories or express a meaningful message, and
I would like to assist you with your first short film. Thus, the primary steps to creating a film are
getting the equipment, planning out the production, taking action, and editing the video. First of all, it
s important to gather all the necessary equipment needed for the project. If you can t buy the
equipment, you can rent these pieces of equipment at Magnanimous Media. Initially, the most
important equipment for the production is to have a video camera since it s a device for you to record
the visual. The computer is another significant tool to use to edit the footage which the footage would
be from your video camera. We would need a video software on the computer, and I have some
recommendations of software like Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, VideoPad, or AVI Editor. The

Fashion History Essay
Introduction
Historically, multiple styles of dressing have been created during the last several decades, which
played an important role in modern fashion in the UK. Everyone has a different and unique dressing
style in their general life. Some styles are influenced in vintage styles which is attributing to the deep
effects of old vogue, and another group of dressing styles are inclined into the fresh element.
According to those different styles some of them are even evolved in the milestones in fashion history.

The Simpson s is about the satiric adventures of a working class family in the city of Springfield. The
Simpsons is an example of an American sitcom. A sitcom is situation comedy, which is when the same
setting and same characters appear in every episode. Sitcoms surfaced in the 1950 s in America
showing the ideal family. Slowly sitcoms started to show the reality of life and dealt with social issues
such as divorce and unemployment. Sitcoms have become very popular because people could relate to
the program, since they show problems that happen in every day life. In this essay, I am going to

This is makes the audience skeptical and appears unrealistic. She goes against her stereotype because
she is going against the norms of an eight year old girl. Later on in this episode, Bart gets a tattoo.
This goes against the norms of a young boy, because you rarely see someone getting a tattoo that
young. It adds comedic value as well. The tattoo parlor is being satirized because they are shown as
irresponsible for allowing a child to get a tattoo. Homer is shown as an unsupportive father because he
falls asleep when his children are performing on stage. He should be cheering and watching, but he
goes against his stereotype, which also adds comedic value. Marge is the only one in this episode who
does not go against her stereotype. She acts like a mother by getting angry with Bart and watches the
school production and cheers on her children.
The family as a unit is stereotyped. The father brings in the money while the mother stays at home.
The kids go to school. On the other hand, they have problems that are not ideal for a family. They
have a son who s failing in school, and they have financial issues. However, at the end of each episode
they are shown as happy even after the hardships. Even though they re not perfect they still love each
other. In the episode Homer Bad Man , the family sticks together when Homer is accused of sexual

  • 2. Manslaughter Persuasive Essay Upon Google searching (2017), define manslaughter , one will discover that is is the crime of killing a human being without malice aforethought, or otherwise in circumstances not amounting to murder. In other words, manslaughter is the unintentional act of killing a human being. After Google searching (2017), define murder , it is evident that it is the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. Alternatively, it means one human being plans to kill another human being and does it. Is taking a person s life due to driving under the influence an intention or unintentional wrongdoing? Some may attest that the intoxicated driver did not conspire to kill someone, therefore, it is manslaughter. Others may inquire that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the states in the United States consider driver under the influence and kill someone, vehicular manslaughter. According to Stim (2015), Alaska, Montana, and Arizona are the only three states that more often than not charge defendants with murder over manslaughter in vehicular deaths caused by driving under the influence. To put it in perspective, 94% of the states in the United States prefer manslaughter convictions over homicide. Vehicular manslaughter is broken down into two divisions. Vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and vehicular manslaughter with ordinary negligence. Gross negligence comes from driving that is extremely reckless. Ordinary negligence spawns from the driver failing to take the precautions as a typical driver, and injury/death is caused. For example, if an intoxicated driver is swerving all over the road and strikes a car that results in death for the opposing driver, that would be gross negligence. Now if an intoxicated driver fails to yield properly and t bones a car that results in death of the other driver, that would be ordinary negligence. If a defendant is found guilty of vehicular manslaughter, they face at least 4 10 years behind bars for each person killed. Therefore, if a car has two people in it that were killed, the sentencing can be doubled. In comparison, if a murder charge sticks, the defendant s sentence can range from 10 years to lifelong imprisonment. McCurley (2014) argues that both of the drivers involved in the accident could be found to be intoxicated. If one driver lives and the other dies, why should the driver that survives be charged with murder? He is saying that both drivers can be at fault as they were both intoxicated. The reason we lock away homicidal people is because of their mental state. We do not want them to be able to roam the free world and possibly commit murder again. When people drive under the influence and take a life, that does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Virtue In Socrates And Menon In Plato s Menon, Socrates and Menon discussed about the nature of virtue and whether it can be taught. The definition of virtue varies a lot through the whole conversation. Even though Socrates and Menon failed to reach a precise definition of virtue after spending amount of time and effort, their arguments enlightened my idea that virtue consists in the ability to take the responsibility to good purpose and a willingness to explore and learn. Virtue is not some sort of knowledge that can be acquired by teaching or through predecessors, instead, being virtuous can be achieved by constantly discovering and applying true opinions. To begin with, being able to take the responsibility to good purpose consists a crucial portion of virtue. Socrates firstly asked Menon the definition of virtue before figuring out if virtue can be taught. Menon brought up several possible explanations, which, however, were rejected by Socrates. The first one is that virtue is a specific thing among different people. To illustrate, for instance, for men, virtue is to be good to friends and to harm the enemies; for women, virtue is to manage the housework and take care of their family. However, this explanation only showed that various forms of virtue exist among different people; Menon failed to clearly identify the virtue by pointing out how these examples can share in common. From my perspective, even though people in the society may have different roles, they all take responsibilities and make efforts to do their job. More importantly, what they do benefits either themselves or society and does no harm others. For instance, thieves can not be virtuous because even though they might make efforts to steal from others, they benefit themselves by impairing people s interest and disturbing the social order. Virtue does not consist in justice, instead, justice is one of forms of being virtuous. Menon later modified his definition of virtue several times; he believed that virtue is the ability to rule with justice and the ability to obtain justly. Socrates objected his answers because he used one term, which is justice, to define virtue. From my point of view, being just, however, is only one aspect of being virtuous. On the other hand, ... • 4. Our Fractious Foreign Policy Debate In Fred Baumann s article, Our Fractious Foreign Policy Debate he describes America s unique approach in dealing with foreign countries from the Vietnam Conflict to the War in Afghanistan. In Baumann s opinion, the United States sometimes takes an irrational outlook of issues with other counties and that has gotten the U.S into trouble. He begins by describing the issues that the United States has faced since Vietnam and how we may have made decisions since then based on a conflict that happened over three decades ago. He takes a rather controversial take on our countries foreign policy and by the end of the article questions whether or not our government is making well founded decisions, and I agree with him completely because the United States has made critical errors in judgement over the foreign policy since Vietnam. Baumann starts the discussion on U.S policy by turning his attention to the Vietnam paradigm which describes how our foreign policy controls itself with political suspicions and moral condemnation for the use of nearly any type of military deployment(68). Right wing conservatives will tell you that what we did in Vietnam was to free the people and allow them to be democratic and no longer under North Vietnamese rule. Baumann believes that when conservatives are in power they tend to fight wars on their tiptoes(68). The American populations interest in foreign affairs and our government has severely declined since times like the 70s and Vietnam. Taylor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Examples Of Invasive Species In Ontario Introduced species are seldom a positive addition to an ecosystem as they cause great stress and harm to the populations of native species. Many introduced species become invasive as they have no natural predators in their new environment, therefore they thrive, and crowd out all other animals. Some examples of invasive species in Ontario waters include the round goby, zebra mussels, eurasian ruffe, goldfish, northern snakehead, rainbow smelt, and rudd, to name a few. A great example to show how destructive an introduced fish can be is the asian carp, this species spreads very aggressively and it is considered the greatest threat to aquatic ecosystems in Ontario. These fish grow to be very large in size, up to 40 kg and 1 meter long. The asian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Use of DNA in Criminal Investigations Essay Before the 1980s, courts relied on testimony and eyewitness accounts as a main source of evidence. Notoriously unreliable, these techniques have since faded away to the stunning reliability of DNA forensics. In 1984, British geneticist Alec Jeffreys of the University of Leicester discovered an interesting new marker in the human genome. Most DNA information is the same in every human, but the junk code between genes is unique to every person. Junk DNA used for investigative purposes can be found in blood, saliva, perspiration, sexual fluid, skin tissue, bone marrow, dental pulp, and hair follicles (Butler, 2011). By analyzing this junk code, Jeffreys found certain sequences of 10 to 100 base pairs repeated multiple times. These tandem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... DNA forensics can also narrow down suspect pools, exonerate innocent suspects, and link crimes together if the same DNA is found at both scenes. However, without existing suspects, a DNA profile cannot direct an investigation because current knowledge of genotype phenotype relation is too vague for DNA phenotyping. For example, a profile from a first time offender that has no match in any database may give the information that the criminal is a left handed male of medium stature with red hair and freckles. It would be impossible to interview every man who fits that description. However, with available suspects, DNA forensics has many advantages over other forms of evidence. One is the longevity of DNA. Although it will deteriorate if exposed to sunlight, it can remain intact for centuries under proper conditions (Sachs, 2004). Because DNA is so durable, investigators can reopen old cases to reexamine evidence. DNA from animals and plants can also be utilized in criminal forensics. One of the most common applications of this is the analysis of pet hair from a crime scene, which often links its owner to the crime. DNA fingerprints have also been applied to cannabis plants, and a database is being created to trace samples to their sources. This has been extremely successful so far, as this technology can distinguish between closely related, carefully bred plants (Westphal, 2003). Heather Miller Coyle of the Connecticut ... • 9. China’s One Child Policy Essay With more than 1.3 billion people, China has to think about a solution and find ways to deal with its population explosion. In order to have control over population, in 1970, a policy named China s One Child Policy was introduced. Mingliang argues that, China, through the one child policy, has instituted the most aggressive, comprehensive population policy in the world (1). This policy limits all families in the Republic of China to have only one child, regardless of the sex: however, within this policy there are some exceptions. It is possible to have two children only if the first child is born with a disability, if parents work in a high risk job, if the couple lives in villages, or if the family is a non Han, otherwise you are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Mingliang states, the Chinese preference for at least one son is well documented (3). Having two sons in a family is very unusual in China. Due to the preferences of having sons, the abortion rates have increased. Abortion is well known in China, as is the missing girls phenomenon. Shaou, Dodge, and Suter argue that, of the seven million abortions annually in China, the International Planned Parenthood Federation indicates that more than 70 percent are female unborn children (4). This is a big percentage, and the number of girls in this country is decreasing every year. People are using different ways to limit the number of girls. Moreover, if a woman does not want to abort, she is forced to do so. Bluett argues that, abortions are performed throughout the entire nine month period, even up to the point of childbirth (3), simply saying the increase in sex ration is caused mainly by son preference, which is as a tradition in China. It is significant to mention that because of the gender imbalance, younger generations are facing other problems. According to Bluett, many males are left without a wife, which leads to an increase in human trafficking (5). The one child policy is causing a lot of troubles and China has to make sure to reduce the negative effects of this policy. However, China s one child policy has been effective in some ways. Democracy or liberals, are supposed to be champions of minority rights, cultural diversity and civic as opposed to ethnic nationalism (Parekh, p.5). Instead they are threatening by these groups. The fear the West shows is a fear of misguidance. They start to see the Muslim make demands of their government for appropriate for themselves and their children such as hala meat, facilities for prayer, and schools to teach their children about their history and cultural (Parekh, p.7). • 12. Negative Effects Of Solar Eclipses With the impending solar eclipse set to darken the skies briefly on Monday afternoon, physicians across the country are preparing to treat cases of optical damage caused by glaring at the dark sun. Unfortunately, many people believe that because the sun is blocked, it blocks the harmful ultraviolet rays from reaching one s eyes, but that is not the case. Assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Tamara S. Oechslin, explains it is never safe to stare directly into the sun, and that includes during the eclipse (Janarthanan). But, these eclipses have been occurring for thousands of years. In fact, the ancient Chinese believed that solar eclipses were dragons devouring the sun (NASA). Obviously, the general population has come to a much stronger understanding of what a solar eclipse entails, but they do not necessarily follow guidance related to viewing the eclipse. In 1999, a solar eclipse occurred and several thousand people rang helplines or attended special eclipse clinics (Dobson). However, the number of cases of solar retinopathy than was widely feared (Dobson). Solar retinopathy is the damage caused by someone looking at the sun with improper or no eye protection. The retina, the home of light sensing cells, is then damaged by the harmful rays of the sun. Treatment to try and heal the effects of solar retinopathy has proven ineffective (Dobson). The common people heard them sung by bards, while in the court poets wrote different versions. In each retelling the speaker would select certain details for emphasis and introduce new elements, so that the story could be adapted to the particular time and audience. Although most historians believe that there actually did exist an Arthur, they differ on how major his role was on influencing society during his time. Nennius s historical account is backed up by a set of Easter Tables. They were calculating tables as to when Easter would fall out for the next given number of years and in them were noted events of outstanding importance. In the annals were two dates regarding Arthur. The first date is disputed: It is put as either 499 or 518 A.D. The first entry reads: ?Battle of Badon, in which Arthur carried the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ on his shoulders for three days and three nights and the Britons were victors (Jenkins 28).? The second entry dated 539 reads: The Battle of Camlann, in which Arthur and Modred perished. And there was plague in Britain and Ireland (Jenkins 28).? These accounts of Arthur are not only the basis for his fame, but they also show us the broad terrain of Arthur s military activity. • 21. Byronic Hero In Mikhail Lermontov s A Hero Of Our Time Whether he is being criticized or clarified, it is clear that Mikhail Lermontov in A Hero of Our Time is challenging the archetype of the Byronic hero. Throughout the novel, Lermontov offers a commentary on the ideals of a Byronic hero in 19th century Russia and how it has become fashionable to imitate qualities that were once scorned, especially when compared to the age old ideals of the classic hero. The classical hero exhibited more traditionally exalted traits: courage, sacrifice, bravery. This is in clear contrast with the contemporary traits the typical Byronic hero exhibited: an enigmatic sense of danger, unpredictable selfishness, and an alluring hidden past full of tragedies. Lermontov takes advantage of this clear division between the old and new ideals by juxtaposing Grushnitsky with Pechorin to outline some of the more tangible requirements of the Byronic Hero. Simultaneously, he also uses Grushnitsky as a source of irony, in order to show that the heroes of 19th century Russia are in fact hollow images based on status and misperceptions as opposed to Classical heroes prior to them. In Princess Mary, Lermontov reveals how the heroes of 19th century Russia exemplified Byronic traits to such an extent that they had become fashionable to imitate. In A Hero of Our Time, Lermontov situates Grushnitsky as a foil to Pechorin to demonstrate how Pechorin serves as an example of the typical Byronic Hero. Lear is stubborn, like a willful child, and this is just one additional way in which he tries to deal with the events controlling his life. Lear flees into the storm, as a child flees a reality too harsh to accept. In spite of his despair and self pity, Lear is revealed as a complex man, one whose punishment far exceeds his foolish errors, and thus, Lear is deserving of the audience s sympathy. Eventually, Lear displays regret, remorse, empathy, and compassion for the poor, a population that Lear has not noticed before.
