2. Transparency As A Theoretical Matter Of Perception
Transparency (Literal vs. Phenomenal) Transparency is defined and understood by most
people as having the property of transmitting light without appreciable scattering so that
bodies lying beyond are seen clearly . The growth in production and development of
technology resulted in a new understanding for transparency in architecture and art. The
architects Colin Rowe and Robert Slutzky believe that transparency is classified into two
different types, literal and phenomenal, where one is the result of optical effects, while
the other type is based on spatial effects that are translated in the subconscious mind.
Classifying transparency into two different types allows a shift from understanding
transparency as science, to comprehending transparency as a theoretical matter of
perception. The categorization of transparency into two types helps people understand
transparency as something beyond science and relate it to a speculative matter of
observation. While both literal and phenomenal are understood as types of
transparencies they preform completely differently. Literal transparency leaves nothing
for the imagination of the viewer to see. The materials and pigments used in
architecture or art to achieve this type of transparency are superimposed, and the forms
are placed behind the transparent surface are clear to the viewer. Therefore, literal
transparency is based strictly on the viewer sight, where the viewer is only using his
eyes and emotions to read the project.
3. Battle Royale In Ralph Ellison s Invisible Man
If any country is the emblem of true freedom, then America is the stereotypical answer
for a number of people. To which, during the reconstruction era, a division of people
who were both legally free and had the same opportunities, but only differed in skin
color, upheld racial segregation like that in Invisible Man. The novel s protagonist utilizes
a symbolic Battle Royale to represent the fight for equality, which coupled with an erotic
dance, leaves minorities stripped of their dignity; thus representing how the American
social view of the era is distorted. In order to understand the significance of the Battle
Royale, one must know that white men of higher class would blindfold men of minorities
in order for them to fight each other.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For an erotic dancer appears naked amongst the men, peering through an abstract
mask, the eyes hollow, allowing her to smile at the class and also be in distress behind
it. The men who control the money, control her, which degrades the symbolic image
of a woman because men both desire her body, yet desire to spit upon her as a result of
her being an erotic dancer. Both white and black men can t touch her innocence, but
white men still have the opportunity to achieve her through social norms. Black men
and minorities are only left to gaze, but not touch her, for some threatened us if we
looked, and others if we did not, making minorities live in a paradox. This paradox of
social views essentially leaves minorities stripped down like the woman in the Battle
Royale. Yet throughout it all, the nakedness of the women shows an American flag
tattooed on her stomach to remark at the social irony of the era. For it is apparent she
believes in the true freedom of America, yet her, a white woman, and the minorities are
being controlled by white men for pure enjoyment and to continue to strip away their
4. Solar Cost Of Solar Energy
Studies have shown that 88% of americans believe in good environmental impact on
the earth. However, 52% of the surveyed believe that government subsidization will
help protect environmental services such as selling organic food or using solar panels
for energy instead of electricity (Franchise Help). Solar energy is being adopted by
businesses like Target who operates over ten projects to conserve energy and reduce
waste. The solar program of Target has generated over 15 30% of the power in their
stores and plan to have an estimate of five hundred roof top panels by the year 2020
(Target). Although solar energy is expensive and risky, in fact businesses going solar
will save money and increase media response. Solar expenses depend on the quality of
the panels which have been built in all shapes and sizes. These Solar panels are not only
accessible to companies and science labs alone, but for regular citizens to connect to
their inner green selves. However, the amount of willingness to pay depends on the
quality of panels you want, crystalline siliconcomes in various forms from
monocrystalline to polysilicon panels. Monocrystalline panels are the most expensive
panel but top grade silicon that is highly efficient rate of 15 20% (Maehlum). While
the average cost of solar panels alone range from $15,000 40,000 depending on size and
watt usage of 3 8kW. Cost for Storage batteries though are on a spectrum from $340 to
over 20,000, storage isn t necessarily required
5. Compare And Contrast The Three Kingdoms Of China
The Three Kingdom is the bloodiest period of warfare in Chinese History. During
which three kingdoms were formed: Wei, Shu and Wu. Due to the impressive and
interesting life of Cao Cao of the Wei state, I have chosen to write about him. A
prominent figurehead in the division of the three kingdoms, Cao Cao was born in
Qiao to Cao Song. Cao Cao would grow up to become the official of Luyong. At such a
young age he showcased his ability to lead and cause people to abide by the law
regardless of their status. This stern and strict nature is an almost absurd finds
amongst 20 year olds, Cao Cao did not exhibit the usual carefree and rebellious nature
assigned with 20 year olds. Due to this Cao Cao would become promoted officer once
the infamous Yellow Turban Rebellion was unleashed. Cao Cao s cunning ability to
form strategies allowed him to hinder and even to defeat the rebels. Once again Cao
Cao was promoted to Chancellor, to suppress the spread of the Yellow Turban Rebellion
in other regions of China, during which he preformed his duty justly. His once strict
nature that raised him also was his downfall as he crossed paths with prominent families.
Eventually he resigned the position and returned to his home.... Show more content on

Cao Cao would raise his own army and enter the capital city of Luyong, from where he
would force the emperor to set orders and plans. Cao Cao from this position increased
his power, he would engage in wars with other counties and provinces. In an act of
vengeance Cao Cao attacked the province of Xu for he believed the governor killed his
father, during this act Cao Cao would massacre thousands of people. Cao Cao would
continue to fight in multiple wars and battles, especially against Lu Bu. Cao Cao would
win numerous of these battles with Lu Bu but he would win the final decisive one,
where Cao Cao surrounds Lu Bu in Xiapi and eventually executes
6. Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti Research Paper
Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer who was born in Naples. In
1733, he moved to Madrid, where he spent the remaining time of his life there and
served Queen Maria Barbara. He composed his 555 well known keyboard sonatas for
the queen during this period of time. These pieces were mostly written to be played on
the harpsichord or the early pianofortes. Although most of the sonatas were composed
in pairs, the D major sonatas, often performed together, formed a rare triptych of three
sonatas. Sonata in D Major, K.491 is the second piece of the triptych, which was
composed in 1756 1757. Similar to most of his other sonatas, Sonata in D major is in the
binary form (AB AB). The structure in dance movements of the Baroque period is
7. Analysis Of The Poem Hills Like White Elephants
Elephants, specifically white elephants, the Bible, and the beautiful red bud of a
blooming rose, all have a similar meaning. The answer to the meaning of these material
objects would be curtains, tall and wide mountains like the Appalachians, and trains.
These may just be material objects, but the allegory, or symbolism, is alive and useful
in both history and present day. Hills Like White Elephants , A Rose For Emily , and
Where Are You Going, Where have you been? are all fictional short stories, with
numerous amounts of allegory, or symbolism, to be analyzed by the use of quotes from
each story, and all with both a short term symbolic meaning and a long term overall
theme.
I was intrigued by all of the symbolism in Hills Like White Elephants . At first, I did not
realize the symbolic meaning of these material objects, but did further research to find
out. The beaded curtain doesn t have the best meaning today, but along with the train
track and the hills they all mean the same thing. Jig (a dance, and also a black person),
the beaded curtain, the tracks, the hills, could all mean BOUNDARIES. Ernest
Hemingway writes, Well, let s try and have a fine time. All right. I was trying. I said the
mountains looked like white elephants. Wasn t that bright? That was bright (312). The
girl and the woman were discussing if the girl wanted water in her alcoholic drink. She
did not know what she wanted so she tried. She goes on to say how nasty the drink
tasted, which is replied
8. Battlestar Galactica Essay
Battlestar Galactica is a story of betrayal for those who created the cylons. The story is a
classic scenario that entails man creating machine and machine turning and destroying
man. Battlestar shows heavily a sub text of anger that is distributed by the people through
the way of the government. The episode shows great emotion and intensity amongst the
lead characters by throwing power into the mix of drama.
The characters in Battlestar Galactica show the state in which humanity reacts in the time
of great defeat. This is shown immediately when the Secretary of Education is sworn into
presidency. She almost instantaneously reacts throwing out commands in all directions.
She believes that whatever she says is the correct way to react and ... Show more content

The captain did however have the right idea of keeping the civilians clear and distant
because in actuality that amount of people, fifty thousand, would have slowed down any
major attempts to do anything. While both of the leaders had good points they both
lacked in one major problem which many companies, corporations, and governments
lack today. They seemed to leave out what was best for the people. The president had
the right idea, but she cared more about saving people then thinking of an exit strategy,
yet the captain had ideas but didn t care about the actual safety of the people. This subject
not only creates controversy in the show, but relates back to the real world and the
controversy between whether or not our government is actually here to help us, or
whether they are just here with their own selfish purposes.
The Story of Battlestar Galactica is a deeply intriguing and sub textual story filled with
betrayal and fear. The show hits heavy with ethics and the weaknesses and strengths that
a government can have when it is thrown into an unknown situation with unknown
outcomes. Battlestar Galactica shows the faults in humanity and can show us, as humans,
how to overcome some of those faults.

9. Mohandas Gandhi
Mohandas Gandhi
Born into a merchant family in 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was under the
influence of powerful people. Members of his family had served as prime ministers of
an Indian state for several generations. His parents were strong in their religion, being
devout and earnest Hindus. They were a part of a Hindu sect that worshipped Vishnu and
promoted non violence.
Apparently, he was most influenced by his mother, a gentle and intelligent person.
According to Hindu custom, he married at an early age and grew to love his wife
greatly. Together, they had four children and adopted a fourth.
Later, in 1888, he travelled to England to become a barrister at law.

After many of his follower s were put into prison and cruelly dealt with, some people
engaged in violence. Gandhi s distaste for this reaction showed, yet he blamed himself
calling it a Himalayan miscalculation to have failed to teach the people how to react non
violently before asking them to protest. As a result of his mistake , he called off the
entire movement, thinking it had been a failure. On the contrary, the movement had been
a great success, no longer did the Indians fear the British jails or the British guns. It was
evident now, that the British Government in India was inevitably going to fall. After
many failures to reach an agreement with the British Government and after a short
Individual Civil Disobedience movement where many were imprisoned, the British
finally gave the power to the Indians in 1946. But, the question remained as to whether
or not the area should be separated into two on a communal basis. As a result, many riots
broke out between the different interests of the people.
Gandhi himself was opposed to separation and to the violence that had broken out. He
went from village to village trying to get the people to understand the benefits of unity,
but it wasn t working. He was forced to agree with his comrades in the Congress who
promoted partition into two areas: India and Pakistan, which came about in 1947.
In 1948, Gandhi was fatally shot by a Hindu fanatic. All
10. The Effects Of Herceptin On Cancer Models And Patients...
Herceptin (trastuzumab) is a therapeutic monoclonal antibody, which is specifically
designed to target HER2 (human epidermal growth factor 2) receptors found on breast
cells( Tan, 2010) . HER2 is a receptor protein that is a member of the epidermal growth
factor receptor family and is over expressed in approximately 10 20% of breast cancers
that have amplification of the HER2 gene (Jatoi, et al., 2010). Herceptin has been found
to selectively apply anti tumor effects in cancermodels and patients with HER2+ breast
cancer(Gajria Chandarlapaty, n.d.). Although all normal breast cells present HER2
receptors on their surface, some cells may express more receptors, as high as two
million receptors per cell (Vu Claret, 2012), due to a mutation causing over expression
of the HER2 gene. As a result of the increased number of HER2 receptors on the
surface of breast cells, more hormones will bind and increased signals are given off,
causing the cells to divide quicker and more frequently, resulting in HER2 positive breast
cancer.
Herceptin works by binding to the extra HER2 receptors on the cell, so that hormones
cannot bind and produce signals to divide. In the absence of Herceptin, HER2 receptors
undergo dimerisation (the pairing of receptors), however, in the presence of Herceptin,
trastuzumab interferes with dimerisation and inhibits HER2 activation by blocking
downstream signalling to inhibit division of cells, see figure 1 (Vu Claret, 2012). As an
antibody, one of the

12. Dying To Be Thin Analysis
The video Dying To Be Thin and both articles by Serpell all implicated that what
society values as a perfect image has a direct impact on how people view themselves.
Most people are not happy with some part of their outside appearance. Pop culture and
reality shows display obsessions with perfection, plastic surgery, most times exploiting
insecure people who are unhappy with their appearance. The perfect body is advertised
on every media outlet and constantly seen in public. There are number of people looking
for that new and perfect body repeatedly going to the doctors and other professionals as
well as developing eating disorders enhancing their obsession about their appearance and
how unhappy they are. Unfortunately, for some people this obsession goes beyond
entertainment, for some people this unhappiness and obsession is not something that just

Serpell proved in his study that individuals who suffer from BN and AN express more
negatives than positives. It is human nature to want to be accepted. There is a sense of
belonging that all humans share and that feeling is probably strongest at the
adolescence stage of life. In today s society, it is not easy for young people to find self
and be happy with it. So many influences are involved in their lives from family,
environment to their peers and pop culture many are quite confused, unhappy and
obsessed with who they are and their image; it is no wonder because so much happens
within an individual s adolescence years. Huge changes in regard to their body images,
pimples are either appearing
13. The Corrupting Force Of Power In Macbeth
Personal power has the ability to be essential to greatness, and at the same time is able
to destroy a person s nature. William Shakespeare s destructive play, Folger Shakespeare
Library Macbeth , reveals the corrupting force of power through its complex characters
and interactions. The play shows that even someone who starts out like Macbethand does
not crave power, will do terrible things to gain authority and power.
In the beginning of the play, the corrupting force of power is revealed when Macbeth is
transfixed by the prophecies of the weird sisters. In act one, scene three, lines 49 51, the
play states First Witch: All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! Second Witch:
All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! Third Witch: All hail, Macbeth, that
shalt be King hereafter! . The quotation means that Macbeth knows that they will not tell
him everything he wants to know. Banquo notes that they have twice told Macbeth of his
rise to power. Here, Macbeth shows his susceptibility to corruption in pursuit of power....

14. Recitatif, By Toni Morrison
Throughout the first half of the semester, we have explored a number of themes and
issues that pertain to literature that can best be described as queer. Queer theory includes
both queer readings of texts and the theorisation of queerness itself. Queer theory focuses
on mismatches between sex, genderand desire . Giovanni s room by James Baldwin, is a
great example of sexual orientation, race, sex, heterosexuality, and whiteness. The main
character, David, struggles with his sexuality. The author goes into great detail to show
this. Toni Morrison s, Recitatif, is another piece of literature that explores race, sex,
whiteness etc... The two main characters, Twyla and Roberta face challenges with race
and class. Toni Morrison is an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes he seems at peace with it, for instance, when he s around other homosexual
men and other times he s completely bothered by it. He recollects on his past with a
man named Joey, who he shared his first sexual relations with. David has this idea of
manhood that he doesn t want to break. The idea of manhood and being attracted to
women go hand and hand.
David becomes so confused by his sexuality, he moves to Paris to try and figure out
who he is as a person. Perhaps, as we say in America, I wanted to find myself. This is
an interesting phrase, not current as far as I know in the language of any other people,
which certainly does not mean what it says, but betrays a nagging suspicion that
something has been misplaced (Morrison Pg 21).
While David s fiance is away out of the country, this gives him the opportunity to
explore with men a little more. David meets Giovanni, a bartender, who is the one he
exchanges sexual relations with. Giovanni s room is where this occurs. The theme of
masculinity comes up consistently throughout the book. David is unable to deal with
his sexual orientation and the expectations of masculinity. In other words, his
insecurities are caused by him being unable to achieve flawless masculinity because of
his sexual attractions to men. It s unclear if David is bisexual or completely gay. He is
engaged to Hella, but I m not sure if she is there for him to cover
15. War Against Terror and Human Rights Essay
War Against Terror and Human Rights
The Human Rights Act 1998 took full legal effect across the English and Welsh legal
systems on October 2nd 1998. The Act, allows people to claim a number of the rights and
freedoms that are set out in the European Convention on Human Rights. The Government
had high hopes that when the act was passed it would create a Culture of Human Rights
within the United Kingdom.
The principal aim of the Human Rights Act 1998 was to give statutory and formal
protection in UK law to a set of clearly distinguishable rights. It was also to allow people
to claim their rights before their own courts without having to take long drawn out and
costly cases to the European ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A victim includes anyone directly affected by the actions or non actions of one of the
above public authorities. Whilst this directly affected principle is absolute, a victim can
also include someone not necessarily directly affected by the actions of a public body,
but indirectly affected. For instance, a person who is likely to be put under surveillance
by the police will be able to call upon the Human Rights Act, even though they have not
yet had their privacy interfered with.
Where it is established that a Convention Right has been violated, the victim may be able
to gain an injunction to stop the violation, force the public authority to take action, take
judicial review proceedings or obtain damages and compensation.
The Human Rights Act affects the different types of legislation in a number of ways.
Primary legislation, which is Parliamentary Statute, the most sacred type of English law,
has to be bought into accordance with the Convention Rights. If primary legislation does
not comply with the Convention Rights then a Declaration of Incompatibility is issued.
This can only be given by the higher courts and allows the offending legislation to be
changed and put inline with the Convention Rights easily and quickly. If a statement is
not issued, then the case proceeds to the European Court of Human Rights.

In the same time he was wondering how to approach elder people from the church and
what steps to take just to be an effective change at Whitney Avenue Congregational
Church. A few of church members had a fear that Pastor Karl will make more changes
than they would like to see changed.
One of the congregational leader Hank, during a conversation with the 40 years old
parishioner Tim, explained how important is for them to keep the church open at any
cost for older parishioners and the only thing that kept them opened was the desire and
willing to help others, to be loving and supportive. Years ago, Whitney Church was filled
with 500 worshipers each Sunday, now Karl noticed that in good Sunday 40 people
attended and most of them were elder.
Even if he found resistance to his initiatives from the elder members, and growing
pressure to increase the number of the church members, his faith in God kept him
motivated to start doing what he had in mind such as a contemporary worship style, good
childcare for young families, and an evangelical outreach to the community.
