Take My Kiowa Grandmother Summary
A Critical Analysis of My Kiowa Grandmother, and
Take My Saddle from the Wall: A Valediction
A Critical Analysis of My Kiowa Grandmother, and
Take My Saddle from the Wall: A Valediction
The essays, My Kiowa Grandmother, by N. Scott Momaday and Take My Saddle from the Wall: A
Valediction, by Larry McMurtry, both seek to understand the values and traditions of an old way of
life that has been lost to the trials and tribulations of time. By reaching back into history through
their families, both authors achieve the same effect, while using starkly contrasting narrative
structure; they show the characteristics that have been lost to younger generations.
The purpose of N. Scott Momaday s essay, My Kiowa Grandmother, is ... Show more content on

McMurtry creates a story about his family, based on their accounts left to him in memoirs and
letters throughout the years. McMurtry s ultimate purpose is to narrate an expressive literary
essay that uses humor and drama to attract the attention of the reader. While discussing cowboys
and their straightforward wisdom, he concludes that cowboys observations turn into aphorisms.
One such aphorism he finds particularly appealing is as follows: A woman s love is like the
morning dew, it s just as likely to fall on a horseturd as on a rose (149). McMurtry also includes a
great deal of drama and suspense as well. At one point, he recalls his grandfather s troublesome
drinking; one day his grandmother issued an ultimatum, sober up or she would leave him. The
threat was undoubtedly made in earnest, and he took it so immediately to heart that he stopped
drinking then and there, with a jug half full of whiskey hanging in the saddle room of the barn (143).
Additionally, a substantial difference between the two essays is the author s view of their
ancestors. McMurtry admits that he never considered genealogy much of an aid to recognition,
and thus never pursued [his] lineage any distance at all (143). On the other hand, Momaday is
very curious of his lineage. So curious in fact that he actually sets out on a fifteen hundred [mile]...
pilgrimage (289) to see where his ancestors began their journey onto the plains. Momaday
describes his ancestors as people of the

12, 2002). In their research Gurin, Dey, Hurtado and Gurin found that diversity experiences had
robust effects on education outcomes for all groups of students (pp. 26, 2002). The article further
detailed how their research showed when students have consistent diverse experiences they
meaningfully affect important learning and democracy outcomes of a college education (pp. 34,
2002). When it comes to developing one s personal educational philosophy, empirical data is
important and has the ability to give us information that we can use to assess whether or not our
beliefs and strategies we intend to use will be effective and have the outcomes we are seeking.
The established higher education model that I tend to gravitate toward and support in my higher
education philosophy is the student centered learning theory also sometimes called learner
centered teaching or a student centered model. The theory of student centered learning can be
contributed to Hayward as early as 1905 and in 1956 to John Dewey (O Neill and McMahon, n.d.).
The student centered model is driven by a need for a change in the traditional educational
environment and when incorporated and implemented correctly we will see

How African Americans Are Portrayed On The Show Essay
I am a pretty big fan of reality TV because it entertains me. To see the lives of different celebrities,
and to see what they do and go through on a day to day basis, in my opinion, is worth tuning in to
once a week. Sometimes the stuff shown on reality TV be funny, but other times they can be rather
disappointing. TV station, VH1, is home to an abundance of reality televisionshows, however, very
few of those shows are more popular than the series Love and Hip Hop. Love and Hip Hop has
been going on for several seasons now, which obviously indicates there are many people that
consistently watch the show. The show may be very entertaining to watch, but the problem is how
African Americans are portrayed on the show.
VH1 over the years has taken advantage of people s flaws by televising them and profiting off
the entertainment these flaws provide. They have done it to people of various races, but no
group is a greater victim than blacks. I think it is safe to say that VH1 has aided in the negative
image, and stereotype that has been painted around people within the black community. While
VH1 has played a big part in this, I do not think anyone has played a bigger role on the image, and
portrayal of black people, than black people themselves.
When I watch these shows on VH1, its nearly inevitable to notice vast amount of outrages, and off
the wall things that occur each episode. Throughout the show you are liable to see anything from a
man taking his child to the park to play,

Social scientists have recorded wide differences in the pace of life in various countries and in
how societies view time whenever as an arrow piercing the future or as a revolving wheel in
which past, present, and future cycle endlessly (165). This is how cultures can view time
differently than other cultures. In result, cultures can have a clear perspective of how time
works and have an understanding of how time is perceived. Estell says that the study of time
and society can be divided into the pragmatic and the cosmological Estell supports the statement
by stating a 1950s anthropologist, Edward T. Hall, JR. Hall wrote about the rules of social time
be apart a silent language for a culture. Hall says The rule might not always be made explicit, but
they exist in thin air... They are either familiar and comfortable or unfamiliar and wrong (165).
This states that different cultures will have a better understanding of how time works than other
people do in the world. Hall describes how different perspectives of time can lead to
misunderstanding between cultures and people. An ambassador who has been kept waiting for
more than half an hour by foreign visitor needs to understand this if his visitor just mutters an
apology this is not necessarily an insult (165). This is the example of the different time systems in
foreign country.

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Formal Lab Essay
Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution
Objective
The objective of this experiment was to illustrate electrophilic aromatic substitution by synthesizing

Discussion Aromatic compounds can undergo electrophilic substitution reactions. In these reactions,
the aromatic ring acts as a nucleophile (an electron pair donor) and reacts with an electrophilic
reagent (an electron pair acceptor) resulting in the replacement of a hydrogen on the aromatic ring
with the electrophile. Due to the fact that the conjugated 6ПЂ electron system of the aromatic ring
is so stable, the carbocation intermediate loses a proton to sustain the aromatic ring rather than
reacting with a nucleophile. Ring substituents strongly influence the rate and position of
electrophilic attack. Electron donating groups on the benzene ring speed up the substitution process
by stabilizing the carbocation intermediate. Electron withdrawing groups, however, slow down the
aromatic substitution because formation of the carbocation intermediate is more difficult. The
electron withdrawing group withdraws electron density from a species that is already positively
charged making it very electron deficient. Therefore, electron donating groups are considered to be
activating and electron withdrawing groups are deactivating . Activating substituents direct
incoming groups to either the ortho or para positions. Deactivating substituents, with the exception
of the halogens, direct incoming groups to the meta position. The experiment described above was
an example of a specific electrophilic aromatic

Correlation Between Money Supply And Price Level For...
Darrat (1986) used the procedure recommended by Sargent (1976) to test the direction of causality
between money supply and price level for Morocco, Tunisia and Libya for the period from 1960Q1
to 1980Q2. This study found the unidirectional causality running from narrow money supply to
price level, which supported Monetarists view that money mattered price level. However, Parikh
and Starmer (1988) have explored the relationship between money supplyand price level in
Bangladesh using the monthly data during the period 1973 1986 and found the unidirectional
feedback running from price to money. In this study, the strict exogeneity of money supply is
rejected. The results of this study has denied the Monetarists view but supports Structuralists view.
Similarly, the study of Ramchandran and Kamaiah (1992) has also noticed the uni directional
causality running from money supply to price level for the economy of India as in case of Darrat
(1986). On the other hand, the study of Aghevli and Khan (1978) for Brazil, Columbia, the
Dominican Republic, and Thailand, has found bidirectional causality between money and prices.
Likewise, Maish and Maish (1994) examined the question of causality between money and price in
the context of Asian developing economy, India. This study supported monetarists view that money
supply was leading variable and price was lagging variable in the context of India when they
studied the linkage between money supply and price during the period

Sterilization Laws Of The United States
Sterilization legislature was enacted on the state level with the goal of physically preventing the
procreation of individuals deemed to be unfit, mainly handicapped persons or criminals. Though the
nature of these laws did not outright target certain races or social classes, a disproportionate amount
of the individuals sterilized were non white or of immigrant background. Prominent eugenicists and
eugenic organizations in the U.S. played a key role in lobbying for state sterilization laws. Harry H.
Laughlin, superintendent of the EugenicsRecord Office, drafted the American Model Eugenical
Sterilization Law in 1922, which served as a model for many sterilizations laws in the states
(Berenbaum, 1998). By 1926, 23 states had passed sterilization laws that were voluntary and/or
involuntary in nature (Sofair, 2000). Laughlin and other eugenicists called for the sterilization of
institutionalized individuals under the assertion that their genetically inferior traits would be
passed to their progeny and be an economic drain on the state. Many states complied, and by 1935
over 30 states had some form of sterilization law with over 21,000 compulsory sterilizations
performed (Allen 1997). Though the eugenic nature of these laws was stressed by eugenicists, it
was acknowledged that the political support of such laws were greatly financially motivated.
Another important legislation passed by the U.S. was the Immigration Restriction Act of 1924,
which was the first immigration quota

Survival In Auschwitz by Primo Levi
There moments when people just look back in time how situation drastically changed to modern
time. But it wouldn t have become a lesson if no one looked at the issues people had affected
society to present and future. According to the well known book in 20th century written by Primo
Levi, Survival In Auschwitz, he explained about the time of his experience as a young 24 year old
man being placed in German camp since he was considered as Italian citizen and Jewish raced .
During the holocaust, it is one of the most horrible case of position to be part of because it is a

They were placed to work in camp. If they refuse to do what the Germans tell them to do, they ll
just kill them. Many Jews died by murder, starvation, or living with diseases living in camps. He
survived in camps for 10 months, and was known as greatest author and a survivor, throughout his
life experiences.
For all what Levi had gone through must be the scariest experience. It started off from Levi s
life how he was pursuing his career as a Chemist, then all of the sudden, Germans just had to take
over Italy and capture many Jews as possible to either send them to camps or get rid of their life.
It is unbelievable to think about before time of Holocaust, Germans and all only do is just kill
people, force them to do things they really don t deserve to do like working in factories. It is
also unbelievable that Germans who are in charge of looking after the Jews, they treat them like
animals, not human being. Hardly any food for them to eat, forced them to work, everyone
looked the same by having their heads shaved and getting their arms tattooed with code numbers.
Just reading through Levi s partial life experience living in Auschwitz, is just incredible how he
manages to remember the worst times he had seen and done. The greatest and worst times will
always be glued into a human s brain. It s amazing how he s able to tell a story to tell by just

In This Strange Labyrinth, by Mary Wroth
Mary Wroth alludes to mythology in her sonnet In This Strange Labyrinth to describe a woman s
confused struggle with love. The speaker of the poem is a woman stuck in a labyrinth, alluding to
the original myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. The suggestion that love is not perfect and in fact
painful was a revolutionary thing for a woman to write about in the Renaissance. Wroth uses the
poem s title and its relation to the myth, symbolism and poem structure to communicate her
message about the tortures of love. In the title In This Strange Labyrinth, the labyrinth is symbolic
of love s maze like qualities. The speaker describes her predicament by saying, In this strange
Labyrinth how shall I turn/Ways are on all sides (1 2). A... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Evidence of Wroth s allusion to Adriane and Theseuslies in the lines Yet that which most my
troubled sense doth move/ Is to leave all, and take the thread of love (13 14). In the myth, Theseus
travels through the maze with Ariadne s thread as a guide. Though the thread leads Theseus through
the labyrinth safely, the speaker struggles to decide whether she is going to take the thread of love
and risk the fall.
The speaker s decidedly abusive romance is affected by fire, danger, suspicion, shame,
mourning, doubts, and troubled sense. Each path she could possibly take is impeded by
something negative. In line three, Wroth says, If to the right hand there in love I burn (3), and
refers to love as fire, whether symbolic of passion or literal burning. In the symbolic sense,
Wroth is speaking of burning as sexual desire, which for a woman of her time would ultimately
lead to the shame mentioned in the sixth line. In the Renaissance, women referred to love as
virtuous and romantic. They did not refer to romance as abusive and torturous, making Wroth s
sonnet revolutionary and scandalous. If burn is taken literally, considering Wroth is already
comparing love to a strange, intricate made to trap sacrifices as food for a monster, it makes sense
that she would also explain it as burning; more or less torture and pain (Abrams 1692).
The statement, Let me go forward, therein danger is; (4) explains that her choice to go forward is
thwarted by

Similar Minds Words Choice Test
On August 25, 2016, I Darlene Bostick took the Similar Minds Words Choice Test. The test
consists of twenty four pairs of words, use to show the aspect of ones; character. Base on the results
from the Similar Minds Inventory, my personality type is ISFJ (A Conservator). The Acronym for
ISFJ is Introverted, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging. ISFJs are characterized as the desire to serve
others (Retrieved from http://www.similarminds.com). In this section, I will discuss the functional
analysis of Introverted, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging. The First criterion is Introverted . We are
introverted when we avoid large crowds of individuals, think about our needs and wants, and rather
time alone (Retrieved from http://humanmetrics.com/personality/isfj). The Sensing preference
refers to the attribute that allows us to detect a certain feeling of prediction or behavior based on

Hopper uses these formalities to depict real life diner in American. Hopper purpose and what he
was trying to say I believe he wanted to create a timeless feel for American art. CafГ© Terrace at
Night was the first painting that Van Gogh painted where he used a nocturnal background. Using
contrasting colors and tones, unlike Nighthawk which used complementary colors, Van Gogh was
able to achieve a luminous surface with an interior light. Because of the brightness of the
luminous surface Van Gogh manage to brighten up the painting with bright yellow stars that
appear to make the sky glow, alongside the lights that pour out of the cafe making it attention
grabbing. Likewise with Nighthawks with its illuminate diner which shows similarities in their
lighting. The lines of composition is also different from Nighthawk which its lines were very
straight and rectangular, the composition in this piece points to the center of the work drawing
the viewer s eye along the pavement as if it were strolling the streets. Van Gogh was able to
recreated the setting directly from his observation, again similar to Hopper when he used the
Greenwich Village diner as inspiration for his work. Both pieces are successful works of art but,

Why Corporations Should Not Hire Military Veterans
Military veterans have many characteristics that show good leadership and courage, which is what
companies should be aspiring to have in their employees. Instead, many corporations are purposely
not hiring military veterans; resulting in thousands becoming homeless. Corporations are
discriminating against our soldiers and the government is not endeavoring to help these soldiers
either. Companies automatically assume that vets suffer from mental illnesses, are irrational and
violent, and are uneducated and incompetent. Our government needs to establish more programs
that will benefit our soldiers such as: creating shelter homes; providing them with therapists to
help them with newly developed mental disorders; and allowing them to gain stability by giving
them more job opportunities. There are numerous reasons as to why corporations are choosing to
not hire military veterans. There are two sets of reasons: one being the reasons that corporations
tell the public and, two being what they truly mean but will not announce freely to the public. In
the article, 5 Reasons Why Employers Are Not Hiring Vets by Lisa Nagorny and Dan Pick, student
veterans at Wharton s MBA for Executives program, Nagorny and Pick discuss the interviews they
conducted with 87 individuals and 69 companies. At the end of their study, they concluded five
main reasons on why employers do not hire veterans. Those reasons came down to being: skill

The Link Between Idiocracy And Rituals Essay
Idiocracy revolves around a man named Joe Bauers, definition of an Ordinary American who
works as U.S Army librarian; he is selected by the force for a top secret human hibernation
experiment. The examination is overlooked when the officer in control is captured for having
begun his own prostitution ring under Upgrayedd s guidance. As he wakes up 500 years in future
he finds the society so staggeringly stupefied that he s effortlessly the most intelligent individual
alive. For this particular text we will discuss the link between Idiocracy and Rituals. In order to
understand the link between Idiocracy and rituals we must consider theories of John Beattie
(instrumental and expressive actions), Carl Jung(theory of the archetype ), Emile Durkheim (rituals
and society), and lastly Sigmund Freuds psychoanalytical theory. In Idiocracy, we see the message
that the director is attempting to depict through the main character jon Bauers, to not be so
immersed in the innovation that we stop to think and get so dumb.
The first theory that will bring us closer to understanding how the movie Idiocracy portrays ritual
we must take a look at John Beattie s theory on instrumental and expressive actions. Beattie s theory
states Instrumental activities can have an expressive component, and numerous expressive
activities can likewise be done instrumentally. Like in the case he gave in the content driving a car

Victorian Age Comparison Essay
The Victorian Era is a time in history in which societal expectations of men and women were
formidably difficult to meet. Societal expectations made it harder for one to succeed in a

were authors Jane Austen and Christina Rossetti, who each wrote a unique piece criticizing these
beliefs. The two authors expressed their opposing views to the time s expectations of male to
female relations in their literature pieces The Goblin Market and Love and Friendship. Christina
Rossetti wrote The Goblin Market: a piece in which the lives of two independent women are
depicted to be ruined by loathsome creatures representative of males and relationships. Similarly,
Jane Austenwrote Love and Friendship: a tale that depicts two females whose lives come to a
sudden decline due to the loss of their husbands and their naive nature towards true love. Within
both pieces, Rossetti and Austen expose the hardship in attaining the highest profound connection
in male to female relationships through the barriers of power relations, social class, and the fantasy
of true love.
During the Victorian Era, a stable life was not always easily attainable. A female did not have much
choice in the choosing of her lifelong partner, as Austen exhibits in Laura and Jannetta s cases.
Both females had their marriages arranged by their fathers based upon the future husband s success
of societal norms (D:

Negligence Was Introduced By The Australian Courts As A...
AContributory negligence was introduced by the Australian courts as a complete defence should
the plaintiff claim the defendant had been negligent in their actions. The Law Reform Act 199510
was introduced however to allow for apportionment of damages in cases regarding contributory
negligence. In section 10 of the Law Reform Act 1995 this principle is described as if a plaintiff s
damage is the result partly of the plaintiff s fault and partly of the fault of the defendant, the
plaintiff can still recover damages from the defendant but the amount of damages is reduced to the
extent that the court thinks just and equitable having regard to the plaintiff s share in the
responsibility for the damage. 10
As a defence, contributory negligence has been used successfully to reduce the damages for the
defendant to pay. In Wei Fan v South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (No.2)11, this principle
was introduced by the defence to illustrate that they were not liable for the exacerbation of the
plaintiff s condition. The plaintiff attempted to claim for damages for the following conditions;
diabetes type 2, progression of cholecystitis, fractured skull and traumatic brain injury. By applying
contributory negligence to the case, the liability of the conditions was entirely placed on the
plaintiff due to discharging himself from three hospitals within the district against medical advice.
Discharging himself prematurely was proven to have lead to the exacerbation of the

How Drug And Human Trafficking Differ From Traditional...
but this could possibly happen in areas like Munro s borderlands , the Golden Triangle, or other
places within Southeast Asia.
How drug and human trafficking differ from traditional security threats are that unlike traditional
external military threats which represent a state or a force, transnational traffickers are a part of a
globalise network of groups and individuals. Discussed in the previous paragraph, people that are
a part of the trafficking industry range from everyday people and businessmen, to criminal groups;
with the only relation they have to each other is the commodity they smuggle. Because of this and
the illicit market drive of demand and supply, traditional means of increasing police, destroy
criminal groups, and increasing illegal trafficking penalties does little to reduce the demand and
supply. In order to reduce the flow of trafficked commodities, states should reduce the supply and
demand of the illicit industries. This essay will now discuss the state security challenges of
corruption.
Corruption is an important factor necessary for smuggling illicit commodities transnationally. Both
Munro and Phil Williams support this in their texts, with Williams stating that, corruption is a
lubricant which allows organised criminal organisations to operate with maximum effectiveness .
As discussed in the previous paragraph, the drug industry provides large amounts of funds to illicit
groups. These funds can be used to pay off state officials to not

4.1 Value Chain
Value chain is an approach to know how an item or activities create value for consumers. The most
of value provides to consumers, the most of competitive advantage an organization build. In this
analysis, value chain model has separated into primary and support activities. Primary activities are
included in the physical creation of the item and service. On the other hand, support activities give
the inputs and infrastructure that enable the primary activities to happen. This value chain model
can be refer to below figure 5.

Essay On YA
How does YA affect teenagers, adults and their brains?
YA or young adult literature is a topic of many controverses today. Everyone is speaking out about
their opinion on YA. In this essay I want to compare two articles, who give a different opinion. We
can make our own conclusions out of that.
Apparently teen fiction characters like Edward Cullen and Harry Potter can affect teenager s brains.
At a conference called: Emergent Adult Adolescent Literature and Culture, scientists, authors and
even parents had come together to discuss the effect YA from the 21st century can have on the
brains of youngsters.

Both articles agree that YA literature has changed but this is
something literature does over time. In 1950 s they talked about boys ... Show more content on

Teenagers are very vulnerable and from neuroscience we know that the part of the brain
responsible for feelings like fear, anxiety and grief isn t fully developed yet. So, as a teenager dark
fiction amplifies the sense of insecurity.
But hold your horses! Maureen Johnson does not agree
with this at all.

While dystopia or dark themes in general, seem like a new theme, it actually isn t.
There has
been written about before and she argues that books from classical authors like: Shakespeare,
Tolstoy... are as dark or even more dark than current YA literature.в
ЂЁIt is true that adolescents feel
very vulnerable and are very sensitive to these darker themes.
But Maureen says that these books help teenagers deal with their feelings and even help them relate
to other people . On twitter a the tag: #YAsaves started trending.
With this tag young adults or
adults who read YA started to describe how YA literature about dystopia or dark themes helped
them! There are a lot of teenagers who were relieved to finally find something to relate to, to realise
that there can be light at the end of tunnel or to help them deal with certain situations (death, abuse,

Bob is a male nickname or occasionally a given name, most common in English speaking
countries such as the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New
Zealand. It most likely originated from the nickname Rob, short for Robert. Rhyming names were
popular in the Middle Ages, so Richard became Rick, Hick, or Dick, William became Will or Bill,
and Robert became Rob, Hob, Dob, Nob, or Bob.[1][2]
While it is impossible to count the popularity of Bob as a nickname, in 1960 nearly 3,000 babies in
the United States were given the name Bob compared to fewer than 50 in 2000.[3]

own private casinos to games for elite clientele, to booking off track bets in Belmont and
Saratoga, their profit margins are tremendous. In the 1920 s Mafia Boss Bonanno started to fix
horse races, betting huge amounts of money on the known outcomes. Fixing boxing matches
was also a favorite of the early crime lords. Sammy The Bull Gravano, John Gotti s ex Underboss
states that charitable casino events in New York from the period of 1970 1995 were most likely
a front for private profiteers. A man named Joe Pistone, an undercover FBI agent who became a

bribing city officials and local police officers. In the 20th century this has proved very profitable,
but in the last few years has slowed down due to police forces cracking down heavily. Gambling,
however, serves only a limited number of people, and more money can be made on a larger

The Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge, known as the Ardennes Offensive, was the largest battle fought on the
Western Front in Europe during World War II and the largest battle ever fought by the U.S. Army.
The battle was Hitler s last major battle in World War II; an attempt to push the Allied front line
west from northern France to northwestern Belgium. Hitler attempted to split the Allies in two in
their drives toward Germany and destroy the ability to supply themselves (Weintraub, 2007). The
Germans lost so many troops and equipment that they could not launch another attack on the Allied
forces. The Battle of the Bulge is most significant in that it ruined the German army. Essentially, the
Battle of the Bulge brought about the end of World War II (Weintraub, 2007). During the Battle of

The Birth Order Effect On Personality
The Birth Order Effect on Personality:
Is there a Cause or no Cause?
Roxan Rivas
Introduction
Throughout the years, researchers have come to believe that birth order is an important factor in
our lives, almost as important as gender or even genetics. This ties back to the old Nature vs
Nurture theory, where it is not only our biology that defines who we are and what we do, it is a
mixture of both our environment and our genes that help us develop as a whole. Whether you are
an only child, a first born, last born, or somewhere in between, some researchers have found that
this is important in defining your character, your values, goal orientation, and life successes.
Psychology has gone through periods of accepting these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The GSS allows comparison between first born(FB) and later born(LB) from different families.
Overall, these two articles put into perspective the validity of birth order but also the general
development of personalities and achievement goals within children. These two perspectives are
helpful in depicting some uprising issues with both theories and will give us a holistic view on the
topic.
The first article communicates that birth order has an effect on personality and achievement. One
of the things that these researchers noticed is that there are many differences between family
designs such as social class, parental personality, and sibling size. However, they do not attempt to
control this as much because they feel it takes away from the natural control of the study. Their
predictions were that first born (FBs) would be more conscientious and achieving while later born
(LBs) would be perceived as more liberal, agreeable, and rebellious. They collected 4 within
family data sets by asking respondents to compare themselves to their siblings on various
personality and achievement dimensions. In study one, students from the University of California,
Berkeley were asked to nominate the rebel and the achiever in their families. Study 2 also had the

Criminal Profiling In Criminal Investigations
Criminal profiling is a technique used to identify the major personality and behavioral
characteristics of an individual based upon the characteristics of the crime they have committed
(Douglas et al. 1986,p.405). This technique has become increasingly popular and notorious
through its exaggerated use in television and other popular media. Particularly in the movie
Silence of the Lambs a thriller in which criminal profiling is used to apprehend a serial killer.
There is no doubt that due to its popularity in pop culture it has become increasingly present in real
life investigations. Despite this its quite apparent that due to a number of reasons it is rarely useful

In the study participants were required to read profiles and rate their accuracy, it found that the
investigators or individuals would pay more attention or give more weight to the hits in the
profile rather than the misses. This means the investigators were giving profiles greater value
than deserved, observed by the majority of officers rating the ambiguous profiles as useful
(Alison, Smith and Morgan, 2003). The participants selectively noting these hits and discarding
misses is most likely due to the inflated opinions of the expertise of the offender profiler (Alison,
Smith and Morgan, 2003). This is very significant because it reflects that investigators are likely to
concede that the expert opinion holds more weight than their own and instead of critically
evaluating these profiles, they are more likely to take the profiles statements as correct or accurate.
This in itself has the possibility to mislead investigations where offender profiling is used and
speaks as to why they should not be used as anything other than a last resort in

Compartment Syndrome Analysis
Compartment Syndrome is a condition where there is an increase of pressure within a confined
area that is detrimental to the circulation and function of the tissues in the area (Grossman et al.,

compartments in the extremities. These fasciae provide sites of attachment for muscles, maintain
the positioning of muscle groups during motion and during contraction improve the mechanical
advantage of the muscle (Von Keudell et al., 2015). These fasciae create a low compliance, defined
anatomical area with their dense fibrous nature. These defined anatomical areas have a finite
volume, meaning that it can only endure a finite pressure (Rekha, 2010). A compartmental

Abols And Symbolism In Yann Martel s Life Of Pi
Do bananas really float? This is a problem that two characters in Life of Pi struggled
comprehending towards the end of the the story. Life of Pi by Yann Martel is about a boy named
Pi Patel that ends up stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger, in the Pacific. In Life of Pi a major key
thematic statement that Yann Martelmakes during Pi s journey is that just because things may seem
unrealistic, it doesn t mean that people cannot overcome or complete a task . Yann uses the island s
setting, Pi s religious development, and the banana symbolism to deliver his thematic message.
First unrealistic task that came about would be the island s setting, along the unusual setting in
general. Not very often, if ever is it usual to hear about being stranded on an acidic island with a
tiger, but as we can see from Yann s story it can happen. Yann sets Pi running into an acidic island

food from being so traumatized. He s already had plenty and most he hasn t even eaten. There right

Artificial Sweeteners And Low Calorie Sweeteners
In the face of an expanding epidemic of overweight and obesity, individuals have increasingly
turned to artificially sweetened (AS) foods and beverages... in an attempt to lose weight, or control
it (Fowler et al. 2008). Because many artificial sweeteners have less calories in them than regular
sweeteners (such as sugarand honey) do, people have turned to these products in order to help
decrease their caloric intake. One of the most effective ways to lose weight is to decrease the
caloric intake. Artificial sweetenerscan be found in a variety of products, these days, and are very
accessible to consumers. While many believe that these products can help control and reduce
weight, there is evidence suggesting that artificial sweeteners not only have no effect on weight
gain, but may cause weight gain in certain individuals. This is a highly debated topic in the field of
nutrition.
Many researchers believe that artificial sweeteners and low calorie sweeteners can aid in weight
management, however not all researchers agree. Some researchers believe that these sweeteners not
only have no effect on weight management, but can also cause weight gain. There is a tremendous
amount of evidence suggesting that artificial sweeteners aid in weight management. For example,
the study conducted by Blackburn et al. (1997) determined that the addition of the high intensity
artificial sweetener aspartame to a multidisciplinary weight control program would improve weight

There are times where you want to have a fresh start in a new place for many different reasons.
John Smith and William Bradford were originally from England and came to settle in America

One negative is that if there was a security breach, all of the information would be in one place.
Also, if you do not have internet available where you are, you cannot get into the access the

it a necessity for most if not all accounting firms and businesses. The next new accounting
technology method that is positively impacting the accounting world is the use of Optical

data themselves or when copying something written down from a board that is important. Instead,
they can take a picture and have the information there to be editing as they please. There is one
small negative to this system, however. If someone was to write something down on a sheet with

Neil Postman s Amusing Ourselves To Death
A public disclosure, if properly executed, is used to introduce an issue in society and address the
problems with that specific problem. Neil Postman s novel Amusing Ourselves to Death,
successfully emphasizes the effect of media in our contemporary society in the form of a public
disclosure. Postman utilizes multiple writing techniques to support his claims. Neil Postman s
novel Amusing Ourselves to Death was written to inform the modern day society as to how media,
specifically television, has negative effects on a persons everyday life by making a person
virtually powerless and turning the population into an audience. Postman uses an example of
Aldous Huxley to demonstrate that our society has been molded into one where the people are
too distracted by the media to examine their lives closer and understand that they are virtually
powerless. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us (2nd page of Foreword). We, as a
society, love television. We watch it when we are bored, when we are tired, and even keep it on
when conversations are being had as background noise. Needless to say we love it. Postman uses

The Core Elements of Person-Centered Counseling
Person centered counseling (PCC) is one of the key models of understanding for the dynamic force
that lies behind the therapist/client relationship. This particular model focuses on the three core
elements of unconditional positive regard, empathic understanding and congruence, all of which
related to the establishment of a level of trust, understanding, respect and honesty between the two
players. But what happens when the domain of person centered counselinggets usurped by a
computer centered reality ?
Can there really be person centered counseling in the day and age of digital manipulation and
engagement? What does it mean when gaming addictions are a leader on the scoreboard of issues
of concern to many young people? And if there can be an equivalent contemporary model, what are
the implications of this for the use of the kinds of therapeutic interventions that are likely to be the
best for dealing with problem computer usage?
This paper provides a brief overview of the three core elements of the PCC model and then seeks
to explore how they are likely impacted by the evolution of the fast paced realities of computer and
technological immersion. Clients and therapists are already finding themselves engaged together on
many fronts in the dynamic universe of cyberpsychology where the rules about what is real or
ideal and how human perceptions of these transfer to real life are just beginning to be understood.

items donated to them. At primary Children s Hospital the items they look for include: games,

can always make a child happy, but one item that can also comfort a child are the fleece blankets.
Marie Henriksen the In Kind Gifts Service Projects Coordinator said, I hear back from staff and
families how the blankets help comfort children of all ages during a difficult time. Hendriksen
told me a story about a ten year old little boy who had just been through a procedure and he was
complaining a lot about how much he has now. One of the techs went and got him a fleece
blanket for him, after that he never mentioned any pain and everyone that came in he told them
to look at his cool fire engine blanket. Even spending a little time making some fleece blankets
can impact a child at Primary Children s a lot. At Nationwide Children s Hospital the items
donated to them include: toys, crayons, coloring books, games, puzzles, wii/xbox games/ DVD

BP s Commitment to the Recovery of Natural Resources
The projects are part of BP s commitment to provide up to $1 billion in early restoration funding to
expedite recovery of natural resources injured as a result of the Deepwater Horizon accident. The
early restoration framework agreement signed in 2011 requires BP and the trustees to agree upon
the potential projects, funding and the natural resources benefits the projects are expected to
provide. The trustees then implement the projects.
The agreement makes it possible for restoration to begin at an earlier stage of the natural resource
damage (NRD) process than usual. NRD restoration projects are typically funded only after the
NRD assessment is complete and a final settlement has been reached or a final court judgment has
been entered. This process often takes many years, and restoration is often delayed during that
time. The early restoration framework agreement allows the parties to expedite projects to restore,
replace or acquire the equivalent of injured natural resources in the Gulf soon after an injury is
identified, reducing the time needed to achieve restoration of those resources. Projects under way
Ten projects were approved in two separate phases.
Phase I projects
The eight initial projects will restore and enhance wildlife, habitats and the services provided by
those habitats, as well as provide additional access for fishing, boating and related recreational
uses. The projects are in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The trustees approved the

The Potential Influences Of Attitude And Attitude Change
Attitudes are conceptualised as stable entities or temporary constructions (Bohner and Dickel,
2011). The following article moves on to describe in greater detail the potential influences of
attitude and attitude change with the aim of highlighting possible reasoning behind these.
Furthermore, to define a particular attitudeas a stable entity is to suggest that one s attitude is
derived from a preconceived idea or memory. To the contrary, a temporary construction is to
construct an attitude in an instant following a particular event or stimulus. Whilst Visser and
Mirabile (2004) claim that attitudes are a stable entity, and in contrast Shwarz (2007) believes
attitudes are a temporary construction, Eagly and Chaiken (2007) take a moderate stance by
defining attitudes as a psychological tendency, expressed by evaluating a particular entity with
some degree of favour or disfavour. To further investigate attitude change, the topic used as
stimulus for this study is cannabis use. Cannabis use is progressively developing a controversial
reputation in todays society. Research has shown that on one hand, some of the strongest evidence
for marijuana s therapeutic potential derives from treating long term illnesses such as multiple
sclerosis by providing highly reported pain relief (Kmietowicz, 2005). On the other, frequent
cannabis use predicts later depression and anxiety (Moore et al., 2007), and poses an increased risk
of psychosis and schizophrenia (Kmietowicz, 2005).

Cultural Beliefs And Influences Of Marijuana Use
Cultural Beliefs and Influences of Marijuana Use
There have been many cultures that have used marijuana for medicine. For instance, the Chinese
culture used the oil found in the plant for medical purposes. Medicine men would use it to treat
menstrual fatigue, gout, rheumatism, malaria, constipation, absent mindedness and surgical
anesthesia (Spicer, 2002). However, according to the Tao religion, cannabiswas noted to be
considered a yin. Cannabis is regarded in contempt because it weakens the body when eaten
(Spicer, 2002). Taoism considered only substances filled with yang, those that invigorate the body,
as favorable (Spicer, 2002).
Cannabis is also used medically in India s culture. Folk medicine often threw hemp into the fire to
aid an individual into overcoming evil forces that afflicted them. Traditional providers used
cannabis to treat congestion, diarrhea, and to cure fevers (Spicer, 2002). On the other hand, the
African tribe used cannabis to treat snake bites, facilitate child birth, and as a remedy for anthrax,
malaria, black water fever, blood poisoning, dysentery, and asthma (Spicer, 2002).
Religion and the Use of Marijuana Most religions condemn the use of marijuana for recreational
use. In Islam for example, marijuana is considered an intoxicant and all intoxicants are prohibited
(Waqar, 2015). For Christians, the recreational use of marijuana is used with the intent of achieving
intoxication, making it a sinful action (Carter, 2014). When it

Somalia Chapter 1 Summary
Chapter 1:
History of colonialism and the failure of the Somali state:
The African Continent has been the place that is known as a mystery for the Europeans. Despite of
the fact Europeans knew little about the mainland, its people, traditions, conventions, but a
considerable measure of them were profoundly inquisitive about the landmass, and most
importantly its natural resources and raw materials. In the 19th century, European kingdoms began
to give careful consideration to Africa and a great deal of researchers, explorers and travelers
overflowed Africa. The African mainland was brimming with great sights, beautiful creatures,
interesting scenes and indigenous individuals with their own way of life and this life, which was

Simply, Colonialism used the denial of African history to establish the necessity of white men to
bring innovation and technologies into the colonies. Somalia had every reason to succeed, from
possessing a privileged geographical situation, oil, ores to having only one religion and one
language for the whole territory, thus it could have been a great power in the region but
unfortunately colonial powers comes sneaking in, in addition to the wars, piracy and bomb attacks.
The three major powers that colonized Somalia are Italy, France, and Britain, Britain became
concerned with keeping the route to India open through the Suez Canal, which was opened in 1869
and as a result Britain proclaimed Somalia as a British protectorate and named it British Somaliland
and Italy named it Somalia italiana and French Somaliland . Each country has its own interests in
these regions, People of Somalia neither was treated fairly with respect to their humanitarian rights
nor was given respect for their individual culture, Above all colonization succeeded to divide this
unified nation that brings wars, conflicts, and tragedies. Afterwards, Colonial Brutality on the

Bartolome De Las Casas Analysis
Since the discovery of the new world, many explorers, monarchs, philosophers, even priests, had
something to say about its native people. Expressions of how these Europeans felt about the
Native Americans varied from barbarians to people who needed a little bit of guidance.
Commenced by Charles V, the Valladolid debate made up of philosopher Juan Gines De
Sepulveda and priest Bartolome De Las Casas, expressed the views of these two men of the
indigenous people of the Americas. Juan Gines De Sepulveda felt as if it were the right of the
Spaniards to claim dominance of the Native Americans and their lands. However, priest Bartolome
De Las Casas refutes this argument, saying that these Indians are capable of great opportunities. De
Las Casas also argues that with the help of the Spanish, these Native Americans can be taught to be
Christians living in a modern social environment. Sepulveda saw these natives as animals or half
human while De La Casas described them as humble and patient human beings. From a... Show

It is easy to perceive that De Las Casas was right because of his passion for freedom and
injustice. If the debate of Valladolid were still happening today, perhaps a revolution would
ignite civil wars, or division of state. By analyzing the views of Juan Gines de Sepulveda and
Bartolome de Las Casas it is evident that people had mixed emotions of these Native Americans.
In conclusion, De Las Casas and Sepulveda saw the Amerindians from two whole different
perspectives. De Las Casas believed in the Indians to be humble and patient people while
Sepulveda believed them to be barbarians and natural slaves. Overall, morally speaking, De Las
Casas was right. The difference in between this philosopher and this priest did no good because at
the end, Charles V went with a completely different

Sweet William Critique
On Saturday, January 17st, 2016, I visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los
Angeles, California. In the museum, I observed many pictures, paintings and sculptures within
the exhibit of the museum. What interested me was this sculpture called Sweet William by John
Chamberlain. John Chamberlain is best known for junk art and assemblage artist. He was born
in 1927 in Rochester, Indiana and died in 2011. He grew up in Chicago and he studied at the Art
Institute of Chicago and Black Mountain College. Since 1955, he began working in metals and
remained many works using wrecked automobiles. The Sweet William by John Chamberlain was

Julius Caesar Tragic Hero Essay
Julius Caesar, a magnificent and well known tragedy by William Shakespeare. But in every
tragedy, there needs to be a tragic hero. But who is it? There have been many different
conspiracies of who the tragic hero was. The most probable person is Brutus. He fits all the
requirements to being one. From his noble stature, his fatal flaw, and his legacy he left to the
world. He is the perfect candidate of being Julius Caesars tragic hero. One of the requirements to
being a tragic hero is to have a noble stature. The reason why a tragic hero needs to be of noble
standing is so they are easily recognizable. So when their hamartia strikes, they fall hard. To back
this up, at one point Cassius says Brutus and Caesar. What is so special about the name Caesar
........... yours sounds as good. ( ) Cassius is saying that Brutus and Julius Caesar are equally noble.

Antony accepts the rules, and agrees to them. Being himself, Brutus trusted Antony so much that
he felt he did not need to be at the pulpit when Antony was giving his speech. Since Brutus was
not there, Mark Antony says things that he would not have said if Brutus was there. Every tragic
hero consists of having a fatal flaw. Brutus s fall was definitely caused by his trustworthiness.
Every tragic hero leaves a legacy, Brutus s legacy is a very important lesson. At the end of the book
Mark Antony remembers Brutus greatly,
This was the noblest Roman of them all.
All the conspirators save only he
Did that they did in envy of great Caesar;
He, only in a general honest thought
And common good to all, made one of them.
His life was gentle, and the elements
So mixed in him that Nature might stand up
And say to all the world, This was a man!

Tiananmen Square Incident(1989)
The monstrous event that happened on June 4th, 1989 will be forever remembered as one of the
most tragic days in human history. However, many decades ago, this event was foreseen and was
foretold in the book, 1984, by George Orwell. Orwell saw the rise of totalitarianism, and he was
deeply disturbed by what he saw. He believes totalitarianism will be the method that communist
party adopts to fight freedom. The book foreshadows many of the events that will happen in a
communist society. In many ways, the incident of Tiananmen Square in 1989 echoes 1984, which
is a warning that totalitarian government is a power abuser, propaganda manipulator, and
democracy suppressor. Power Abusiveness The party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We

Scientific Method Scientific Method is considered a series of systematic steps and tools that leads

  • 3. Take My Kiowa Grandmother Summary A Critical Analysis of My Kiowa Grandmother, and Take My Saddle from the Wall: A Valediction A Critical Analysis of My Kiowa Grandmother, and Take My Saddle from the Wall: A Valediction The essays, My Kiowa Grandmother, by N. Scott Momaday and Take My Saddle from the Wall: A Valediction, by Larry McMurtry, both seek to understand the values and traditions of an old way of life that has been lost to the trials and tribulations of time. By reaching back into history through their families, both authors achieve the same effect, while using starkly contrasting narrative structure; they show the characteristics that have been lost to younger generations. McMurtry creates a story about his family, based on their accounts left to him in memoirs and letters throughout the years. McMurtry s ultimate purpose is to narrate an expressive literary essay that uses humor and drama to attract the attention of the reader. While discussing cowboys and their straightforward wisdom, he concludes that cowboys observations turn into aphorisms. One such aphorism he finds particularly appealing is as follows: A woman s love is like the morning dew, it s just as likely to fall on a horseturd as on a rose (149). McMurtry also includes a great deal of drama and suspense as well. At one point, he recalls his grandfather s troublesome drinking; one day his grandmother issued an ultimatum, sober up or she would leave him. The threat was undoubtedly made in earnest, and he took it so immediately to heart that he stopped drinking then and there, with a jug half full of whiskey hanging in the saddle room of the barn (143). Additionally, a substantial difference between the two essays is the author s view of their ancestors. McMurtry admits that he never considered genealogy much of an aid to recognition, and thus never pursued [his] lineage any distance at all (143). On the other hand, Momaday is very curious of his lineage. So curious in fact that he actually sets out on a fifteen hundred [mile]... pilgrimage (289) to see where his ancestors began their journey onto the plains. Draft Of Personal Philosophy Statement 7 2 Final Project Milestone Three: Draft of Personal Philosophy Statement In the field of higher education, I will welcome with open arms, accept, affirm, and celebrate all students by creating an environment that is equal and inclusive for all people regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, cultural background, religion, family structure, economic status, learning ability, linguistic ability, and/or learning style. In their research Gurin, Dey, Hurtado and Gurin found that diversity experiences had robust effects on education outcomes for all groups of students (pp. 26, 2002). The article further detailed how their research showed when students have consistent diverse experiences they meaningfully affect important learning and democracy outcomes of a college education (pp. 34, 2002). When it comes to developing one s personal educational philosophy, empirical data is important and has the ability to give us information that we can use to assess whether or not our beliefs and strategies we intend to use will be effective and have the outcomes we are seeking. The established higher education model that I tend to gravitate toward and support in my higher education philosophy is the student centered learning theory also sometimes called learner centered teaching or a student centered model. The theory of student centered learning can be contributed to Hayward as early as 1905 and in 1956 to John Dewey (O Neill and McMahon, n.d.). The student centered model is driven by a need for a change in the traditional educational environment and when incorporated and implemented correctly we will see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. How African Americans Are Portrayed On The Show Essay I am a pretty big fan of reality TV because it entertains me. To see the lives of different celebrities, and to see what they do and go through on a day to day basis, in my opinion, is worth tuning in to once a week. Sometimes the stuff shown on reality TV be funny, but other times they can be rather disappointing. TV station, VH1, is home to an abundance of reality televisionshows, however, very few of those shows are more popular than the series Love and Hip Hop. Love and Hip Hop has been going on for several seasons now, which obviously indicates there are many people that consistently watch the show. The show may be very entertaining to watch, but the problem is how African Americans are portrayed on the show. VH1 over the years has taken advantage of people s flaws by televising them and profiting off the entertainment these flaws provide. They have done it to people of various races, but no group is a greater victim than blacks. I think it is safe to say that VH1 has aided in the negative image, and stereotype that has been painted around people within the black community. While VH1 has played a big part in this, I do not think anyone has played a bigger role on the image, and portrayal of black people, than black people themselves. When I watch these shows on VH1, its nearly inevitable to notice vast amount of outrages, and off the wall things that occur each episode. Throughout the show you are liable to see anything from a man taking his child to the park to play, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Social scientists have recorded wide differences in the pace of life in various countries and in how societies view time whenever as an arrow piercing the future or as a revolving wheel in which past, present, and future cycle endlessly (165). This is how cultures can view time differently than other cultures. In result, cultures can have a clear perspective of how time works and have an understanding of how time is perceived. Estell says that the study of time and society can be divided into the pragmatic and the cosmological Estell supports the statement by stating a 1950s anthropologist, Edward T. Hall, JR. Hall wrote about the rules of social time be apart a silent language for a culture. Hall says The rule might not always be made explicit, but they exist in thin air... They are either familiar and comfortable or unfamiliar and wrong (165). This states that different cultures will have a better understanding of how time works than other people do in the world. Hall describes how different perspectives of time can lead to misunderstanding between cultures and people. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Discussion Aromatic compounds can undergo electrophilic substitution reactions. In these reactions, the aromatic ring acts as a nucleophile (an electron pair donor) and reacts with an electrophilic reagent (an electron pair acceptor) resulting in the replacement of a hydrogen on the aromatic ring with the electrophile. Due to the fact that the conjugated 6ПЂ electron system of the aromatic ring is so stable, the carbocation intermediate loses a proton to sustain the aromatic ring rather than reacting with a nucleophile. Ring substituents strongly influence the rate and position of electrophilic attack. Electron donating groups on the benzene ring speed up the substitution process by stabilizing the carbocation intermediate. Electron withdrawing groups, however, slow down the aromatic substitution because formation of the carbocation intermediate is more difficult. The electron withdrawing group withdraws electron density from a species that is already positively charged making it very electron deficient. Therefore, electron donating groups are considered to be activating and electron withdrawing groups are deactivating . Activating substituents direct incoming groups to either the ortho or para positions. Deactivating substituents, with the exception of the halogens, direct incoming groups to the meta position. The experiment described above was an example of a specific electrophilic aromatic

Darrat (1986) used the procedure recommended by Sargent (1976) to test the direction of causality between money supply and price level for Morocco, Tunisia and Libya for the period from 1960Q1 to 1980Q2. This study found the unidirectional causality running from narrow money supply to price level, which supported Monetarists view that money mattered price level. However, Parikh and Starmer (1988) have explored the relationship between money supplyand price level in Bangladesh using the monthly data during the period 1973 1986 and found the unidirectional feedback running from price to money. In this study, the strict exogeneity of money supply is rejected. The results of this study has denied the Monetarists view but supports Structuralists view. Similarly, the study of Ramchandran and Kamaiah (1992) has also noticed the uni directional causality running from money supply to price level for the economy of India as in case of Darrat (1986). On the other hand, the study of Aghevli and Khan (1978) for Brazil, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, and Thailand, has found bidirectional causality between money and prices. Likewise, Maish and Maish (1994) examined the question of causality between money and price in the context of Asian developing economy, India. • 10. Sterilization Laws Of The United States Sterilization legislature was enacted on the state level with the goal of physically preventing the procreation of individuals deemed to be unfit, mainly handicapped persons or criminals. Though the nature of these laws did not outright target certain races or social classes, a disproportionate amount of the individuals sterilized were non white or of immigrant background. Prominent eugenicists and eugenic organizations in the U.S. played a key role in lobbying for state sterilization laws. Harry H. Laughlin, superintendent of the EugenicsRecord Office, drafted the American Model Eugenical Sterilization Law in 1922, which served as a model for many sterilizations laws in the states (Berenbaum, 1998). By 1926, 23 states had passed sterilization laws that were voluntary and/or involuntary in nature (Sofair, 2000). Laughlin and other eugenicists called for the sterilization of institutionalized individuals under the assertion that their genetically inferior traits would be passed to their progeny and be an economic drain on the state. Many states complied, and by 1935 over 30 states had some form of sterilization law with over 21,000 compulsory sterilizations performed (Allen 1997). Though the eugenic nature of these laws was stressed by eugenicists, it was acknowledged that the political support of such laws were greatly financially motivated. Another important legislation passed by the U.S. was the Immigration Restriction Act of 1924, which was the first immigration quota ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He survived in camps for 10 months, and was known as greatest author and a survivor, throughout his life experiences. For all what Levi had gone through must be the scariest experience. It started off from Levi s life how he was pursuing his career as a Chemist, then all of the sudden, Germans just had to take over Italy and capture many Jews as possible to either send them to camps or get rid of their life. It is unbelievable to think about before time of Holocaust, Germans and all only do is just kill people, force them to do things they really don t deserve to do like working in factories. It is also unbelievable that Germans who are in charge of looking after the Jews, they treat them like animals, not human being. Hardly any food for them to eat, forced them to work, everyone looked the same by having their heads shaved and getting their arms tattooed with code numbers. Just reading through Levi s partial life experience living in Auschwitz, is just incredible how he manages to remember the worst times he had seen and done. • 12. In This Strange Labyrinth, by Mary Wroth Mary Wroth alludes to mythology in her sonnet In This Strange Labyrinth to describe a woman s confused struggle with love. The speaker of the poem is a woman stuck in a labyrinth, alluding to the original myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. The suggestion that love is not perfect and in fact painful was a revolutionary thing for a woman to write about in the Renaissance. Wroth uses the poem s title and its relation to the myth, symbolism and poem structure to communicate her message about the tortures of love. In the title In This Strange Labyrinth, the labyrinth is symbolic of love s maze like qualities. The speaker describes her predicament by saying, In this strange Labyrinth how shall I turn/Ways are on all sides (1 2). A... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Evidence of Wroth s allusion to Adriane and Theseuslies in the lines Yet that which most my troubled sense doth move/ Is to leave all, and take the thread of love (13 14). In the myth, Theseus travels through the maze with Ariadne s thread as a guide. Though the thread leads Theseus through the labyrinth safely, the speaker struggles to decide whether she is going to take the thread of love and risk the fall. The speaker s decidedly abusive romance is affected by fire, danger, suspicion, shame, mourning, doubts, and troubled sense. Each path she could possibly take is impeded by something negative. In line three, Wroth says, If to the right hand there in love I burn (3), and refers to love as fire, whether symbolic of passion or literal burning. In the symbolic sense, Wroth is speaking of burning as sexual desire, which for a woman of her time would ultimately lead to the shame mentioned in the sixth line. In the Renaissance, women referred to love as virtuous and romantic. They did not refer to romance as abusive and torturous, making Wroth s sonnet revolutionary and scandalous. If burn is taken literally, considering Wroth is already comparing love to a strange, intricate made to trap sacrifices as food for a monster, it makes sense that she would also explain it as burning; more or less torture and pain (Abrams 1692). In 1942 Hopper created the piece Nighthawks and Van Gogh created CafГ© Terrace at Night , also known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum which was created in mid September of 1888. Both of these compositions were painted using the same Oil on canvas medium. CafГ© Terrace at Night was the first painting that Van Gogh painted where he used a nocturnal background. Using contrasting colors and tones, unlike Nighthawk which used complementary colors, Van Gogh was able to achieve a luminous surface with an interior light. Because of the brightness of the luminous surface Van Gogh manage to brighten up the painting with bright yellow stars that appear to make the sky glow, alongside the lights that pour out of the cafe making it attention grabbing. Likewise with Nighthawks with its illuminate diner which shows similarities in their lighting. The lines of composition is also different from Nighthawk which its lines were very straight and rectangular, the composition in this piece points to the center of the work drawing the viewer s eye along the pavement as if it were strolling the streets. Why Corporations Should Not Hire Military Veterans Military veterans have many characteristics that show good leadership and courage, which is what companies should be aspiring to have in their employees. Instead, many corporations are purposely not hiring military veterans; resulting in thousands becoming homeless. Corporations are discriminating against our soldiers and the government is not endeavoring to help these soldiers either. Companies automatically assume that vets suffer from mental illnesses, are irrational and violent, and are uneducated and incompetent. Our government needs to establish more programs that will benefit our soldiers such as: creating shelter homes; providing them with therapists to help them with newly developed mental disorders; and allowing them to gain stability by giving them more job opportunities. There are numerous reasons as to why corporations are choosing to not hire military veterans. There are two sets of reasons: one being the reasons that corporations tell the public and, two being what they truly mean but will not announce freely to the public. In the article, 5 Reasons Why Employers Are Not Hiring Vets by Lisa Nagorny and Dan Pick, student veterans at Wharton s MBA for Executives program, Nagorny and Pick discuss the interviews they conducted with 87 individuals and 69 companies. • 21. Victorian Age Comparison Essay The Victorian Era is a time in history in which societal expectations of men and women were formidably difficult to meet. Societal expectations made it harder for one to succeed in a relationship, causing many people of the time to criticize the societal norm. Among these people were authors Jane Austen and Christina Rossetti, who each wrote a unique piece criticizing these beliefs. The two authors expressed their opposing views to the time s expectations of male to female relations in their literature pieces The Goblin Market and Love and Friendship. Christina Rossetti wrote The Goblin Market: a piece in which the lives of two independent women are depicted to be ruined by loathsome creatures representative of males and relationships. Similarly, Jane Austenwrote Love and Friendship: a tale that depicts two females whose lives come to a sudden decline due to the loss of their husbands and their naive nature towards true love. Within both pieces, Rossetti and Austen expose the hardship in attaining the highest profound connection in male to female relationships through the barriers of power relations, social class, and the fantasy of true love. During the Victorian Era, a stable life was not always easily attainable. A female did not have much choice in the choosing of her lifelong partner, as Austen exhibits in Laura and Jannetta s cases. AContributory negligence was introduced by the Australian courts as a complete defence should the plaintiff claim the defendant had been negligent in their actions. The Law Reform Act 199510 was introduced however to allow for apportionment of damages in cases regarding contributory negligence. In section 10 of the Law Reform Act 1995 this principle is described as if a plaintiff s damage is the result partly of the plaintiff s fault and partly of the fault of the defendant, the plaintiff can still recover damages from the defendant but the amount of damages is reduced to the extent that the court thinks just and equitable having regard to the plaintiff s share in the responsibility for the damage. 10 As a defence, contributory negligence has been used successfully to reduce the damages for the defendant to pay. In Wei Fan v South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (No.2)11, this principle was introduced by the defence to illustrate that they were not liable for the exacerbation of the plaintiff s condition. The plaintiff attempted to claim for damages for the following conditions; diabetes type 2, progression of cholecystitis, fractured skull and traumatic brain injury. By applying contributory negligence to the case, the liability of the conditions was entirely placed on the plaintiff due to discharging himself from three hospitals within the district against medical advice. How drug and human trafficking differ from traditional security threats are that unlike traditional external military threats which represent a state or a force, transnational traffickers are a part of a globalise network of groups and individuals. Discussed in the previous paragraph, people that are a part of the trafficking industry range from everyday people and businessmen, to criminal groups; with the only relation they have to each other is the commodity they smuggle. Because of this and the illicit market drive of demand and supply, traditional means of increasing police, destroy criminal groups, and increasing illegal trafficking penalties does little to reduce the demand and supply. In order to reduce the flow of trafficked commodities, states should reduce the supply and demand of the illicit industries. This essay will now discuss the state security challenges of corruption. Corruption is an important factor necessary for smuggling illicit commodities transnationally. Both Munro and Phil Williams support this in their texts, with Williams stating that, corruption is a lubricant which allows organised criminal organisations to operate with maximum effectiveness . As discussed in the previous paragraph, the drug industry provides large amounts of funds to illicit groups. These funds can be used to pay off state officials to not ... The participants selectively noting these hits and discarding misses is most likely due to the inflated opinions of the expertise of the offender profiler (Alison, Smith and Morgan, 2003). One negative is that if there was a security breach, all of the information would be in one place. Also, if you do not have internet available where you are, you cannot get into the access the server. Even with these negatives, the significantly less risk associated with using the cloud makes it a necessity for most if not all accounting firms and businesses. The next new accounting technology method that is positively impacting the accounting world is the use of Optical Character Recognition. Optical Character Recognition (ORC) is another new a sophisticated advancement that is making life easier for accountants and limiting human error. ORC turns images into readable and editable documents, so you can take a picture of anything you are working on or receipts of any kind into an editable document onto an online accounting platform (Marder). This is helping accountants a lot, as it allows them to convert tons of receipts, for example, in minutes. This limits human error as people may make a mistake when entering the data themselves or when copying something written down from a board that is important. Instead, they can take a picture and have the information there to be editing as they please. There is one small negative to this system, however. If someone was to write something down on a sheet with a receipt and it is written down sloppy or illegible, the ORC software could make a mistake in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Neil Postman s Amusing Ourselves To Death A public disclosure, if properly executed, is used to introduce an issue in society and address the problems with that specific problem. Neil Postman s novel Amusing Ourselves to Death, successfully emphasizes the effect of media in our contemporary society in the form of a public disclosure. Postman utilizes multiple writing techniques to support his claims. Neil Postman s novel Amusing Ourselves to Death was written to inform the modern day society as to how media, specifically television, has negative effects on a persons everyday life by making a person virtually powerless and turning the population into an audience. Postman uses an example of Aldous Huxley to demonstrate that our society has been molded into one where the people are too distracted by the media to examine their lives closer and understand that they are virtually powerless. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us (2nd page of Foreword). We, as a society, love television. We watch it when we are bored, when we are tired, and even keep it on when conversations are being had as background noise. Needless to say we love it. Postman uses this quote to show that television, something that we love, is distracting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everything comes with negatives. But it is much later in the game now, and ignorance of the score is inexcusable. To be unaware that a technology comes equipped with a program for social change, to maintain that technology is neutral, to make the assumption that technology is always a friend to culture is, at this late hour, stupidity plain and simple (Chapter 11 Page 5). It is extremely important to acknowledge and understand that technology can drastically change a society. For the purpose of this essay the technology is television and the change is our culture valuing entertainment over substance, which is turning us into a nation who sits back and lets people run the country the way they ... • 40. The Core Elements of Person-Centered Counseling Person centered counseling (PCC) is one of the key models of understanding for the dynamic force that lies behind the therapist/client relationship. This particular model focuses on the three core elements of unconditional positive regard, empathic understanding and congruence, all of which related to the establishment of a level of trust, understanding, respect and honesty between the two players. But what happens when the domain of person centered counselinggets usurped by a computer centered reality ? Can there really be person centered counseling in the day and age of digital manipulation and engagement? What does it mean when gaming addictions are a leader on the scoreboard of issues of concern to many young people? And if there can be an equivalent contemporary model, what are the implications of this for the use of the kinds of therapeutic interventions that are likely to be the best for dealing with problem computer usage? This paper provides a brief overview of the three core elements of the PCC model and then seeks to explore how they are likely impacted by the evolution of the fast paced realities of computer and technological immersion. Clients and therapists are already finding themselves engaged together on many fronts in the dynamic universe of cyberpsychology where the rules about what is real or ideal and how human perceptions of these transfer to real life are just beginning to be understood. First, however, it needs to be recognized that this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. BP s Commitment to the Recovery of Natural Resources The projects are part of BP s commitment to provide up to $1 billion in early restoration funding to expedite recovery of natural resources injured as a result of the Deepwater Horizon accident. The early restoration framework agreement signed in 2011 requires BP and the trustees to agree upon the potential projects, funding and the natural resources benefits the projects are expected to provide. The trustees then implement the projects. The agreement makes it possible for restoration to begin at an earlier stage of the natural resource damage (NRD) process than usual. NRD restoration projects are typically funded only after the NRD assessment is complete and a final settlement has been reached or a final court judgment has been entered. This process often takes many years, and restoration is often delayed during that time. The early restoration framework agreement allows the parties to expedite projects to restore, replace or acquire the equivalent of injured natural resources in the Gulf soon after an injury is identified, reducing the time needed to achieve restoration of those resources. Projects under way Ten projects were approved in two separate phases. Phase I projects The eight initial projects will restore and enhance wildlife, habitats and the services provided by those habitats, as well as provide additional access for fishing, boating and related recreational uses. • 44. The Potential Influences Of Attitude And Attitude Change Attitudes are conceptualised as stable entities or temporary constructions (Bohner and Dickel, 2011). The following article moves on to describe in greater detail the potential influences of attitude and attitude change with the aim of highlighting possible reasoning behind these. Furthermore, to define a particular attitudeas a stable entity is to suggest that one s attitude is derived from a preconceived idea or memory. To the contrary, a temporary construction is to construct an attitude in an instant following a particular event or stimulus. Whilst Visser and Mirabile (2004) claim that attitudes are a stable entity, and in contrast Shwarz (2007) believes attitudes are a temporary construction, Eagly and Chaiken (2007) take a moderate stance by defining attitudes as a psychological tendency, expressed by evaluating a particular entity with some degree of favour or disfavour. To further investigate attitude change, the topic used as stimulus for this study is cannabis use. Cannabis use is progressively developing a controversial reputation in todays society. Research has shown that on one hand, some of the strongest evidence for marijuana s therapeutic potential derives from treating long term illnesses such as multiple sclerosis by providing highly reported pain relief (Kmietowicz, 2005). On the other, frequent cannabis use predicts later depression and anxiety (Moore et al., 2007), and poses an increased risk of psychosis and schizophrenia (Kmietowicz, 2005). ... • 46. Cultural Beliefs And Influences Of Marijuana Use Cultural Beliefs and Influences of Marijuana Use There have been many cultures that have used marijuana for medicine. For instance, the Chinese culture used the oil found in the plant for medical purposes. Medicine men would use it to treat menstrual fatigue, gout, rheumatism, malaria, constipation, absent mindedness and surgical anesthesia (Spicer, 2002). However, according to the Tao religion, cannabiswas noted to be considered a yin. Cannabis is regarded in contempt because it weakens the body when eaten (Spicer, 2002). Taoism considered only substances filled with yang, those that invigorate the body, as favorable (Spicer, 2002). Cannabis is also used medically in India s culture. Folk medicine often threw hemp into the fire to aid an individual into overcoming evil forces that afflicted them. Traditional providers used cannabis to treat congestion, diarrhea, and to cure fevers (Spicer, 2002). On the other hand, the African tribe used cannabis to treat snake bites, facilitate child birth, and as a remedy for anthrax, malaria, black water fever, blood poisoning, dysentery, and asthma (Spicer, 2002). Religion and the Use of Marijuana Most religions condemn the use of marijuana for recreational use. In Islam for example, marijuana is considered an intoxicant and all intoxicants are prohibited (Waqar, 2015). For Christians, the recreational use of marijuana is used with the intent of achieving intoxication, making it a sinful action (Carter, 2014). When it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. Bartolome De Las Casas Analysis Since the discovery of the new world, many explorers, monarchs, philosophers, even priests, had something to say about its native people. Expressions of how these Europeans felt about the Native Americans varied from barbarians to people who needed a little bit of guidance. Commenced by Charles V, the Valladolid debate made up of philosopher Juan Gines De Sepulveda and priest Bartolome De Las Casas, expressed the views of these two men of the indigenous people of the Americas. Juan Gines De Sepulveda felt as if it were the right of the Spaniards to claim dominance of the Native Americans and their lands. However, priest Bartolome De Las Casas refutes this argument, saying that these Indians are capable of great opportunities. De Las Casas also argues that with the help of the Spanish, these Native Americans can be taught to be Christians living in a modern social environment.
