Research Paper On Lou Gehrig s Disease
Diseases and infections. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig s disease is a disease
that affects your motor neurons in your spinal cord and brainstem. The decline of your upper
neurons causes your muscles to tighten and the diminishment of your lower neurons causes your
muscles to shrink down in size. When the neurons die, your brainno loses the ability to control your
voluntary muscles like eating, speaking, moving, and eventually breathing. Most people
diagnosed with ALS live up to 3 5 years after the diagnosis. Individuals between the ages of 40 and
70 are more likely to have this disease and nearly 6,000 people are diagnosed with the disease every
year. There are two different forms of ALS, familial and sporadic. Familial... Show more content on

Watching a human being diminish to a hardly moving, barely breathing body is one of the
hardest experiences I have witnessed. My grandfather was a pilot for a commercial airline for
over twenty years. He was able to fly around the world with his daughter (my mom) and together
they were able to go to London, Italy, Paris, and Spain. My grandparents had lived in Wisconsin
most of their lives before my grandfather was diagnosed with ALS. After my grandpa had fallen a
few times and my grandmother was unable to get him up, we decided to move them out near us.
He has moved into a retirement home just down the road from our house. Over the past 3 years I
have gotten to know my grandparents so much better and I wouldn t trade that for the world.
Although Lou Gehrig s Disease ravished my grandfather s body, his faith in Christ remained
steadfast. I watched as a disease took away my grandfather s physical abilities use of his legs, use
his hands, his sense of taste. However, even though his body was failing around him, his mind
remained remarkably intact. Through these challenging months, I never once saw my grandfather
get angry with God or question why this was happening to him. He took everything in stride, fully
trusting in God. You see, my grandfather firmly believed with his whole heart that God had a
purpose and plan for his life. I saw him witness to those around him our

Sensible Violence Within Cultural Texts Essay examples
According to Ian Almond in the article Mullahs, Mystics, Moderates and Moghuls: The Many
Islams of Salman Rushdie , Rushdie wrote this piece from a medieval religiousness perspective,
most pointedly making use of symbols such as the ancient holy relic whose disappearance inspires
countless deaths (Almond 3). These violent deaths mark something more in the theme of the book;
presumptuously, Rushdie is attempting to enlighten his readers with the many faces of Islam, this
particular story showing the face of Islam who s built in obsolescence stifles the new (Almond 3).
The vial from the prophet Muhammadis laced with mystical and gruesome power, which to all

Salman s select choice in killing them both in these different ways could be a symbolic of defined
Islamic gender roles, such that women are justifiably slaughtered by their superiors, while men are
indirectly killed. Instances like this exemplify Salman s negative tone towards old Islam; no
religious culture should turn to violent outbreaks so drastically and he s using these instances to
prove that point. in his somnolent anger, the moneylender thrust his sword fatally through its [Atta
s] heart (1524) he was so overwhelmed by remorse that he turned the sword upon himself (1524)
Hashim s committing suicide after realizing that he s murdered his own daughter proves that his
conscience is still intact regardless of the relic s power over him. That earlier in the short story had
allowed him to justify selfishly keeping the vial for himself, in his remorse, which is solidified
in killing himself. For the reader, this evokes sympathy toward his character, as the blame for his
actions is passed on to the hair s evil magic. Out of this emerges a theme of individualism versus
collectivism; the first side of Hashim is individualism, as he sought to inculcate... a healthy
independence of spirit in his children. In addition, he presents himself to be not a godly man , but
rather as a man who lives honorably, which could arguably

Weber s Stress On The Formal Aspect Of Organization
This model has been thoroughly critiqued. Many scholars have pointed out that Weber s stress on
the formal aspect of organization in fact ignored the informal structure of relationships which
represent the reality of organizational life. Goal displacement, where rules become an end in
themselves is an instance of an unwanted result of this rule bound method. Parsons highlights the
potential rivalry which may arise between a bureaucrat s authority correlated to his rank in the
hierarchy, and that taken from technical expertise (Parsons, 1960). Other members of the
organization will not know who s orders to follow regarding the mismatch the person with the
appropriate command or an individual possessing greater expertise. (Gouldner, 1959), determines
that individuals take their own ideologies into the workplace, which eventually affect bureaucracy,
making the concept of a value free bureaucracy rather doubtful.
During the 1980 s and 1990 s the New Public Management approach placed focus on the economy,
efficiency and effectiveness of government organizations, instruments and programs, and higher
quality service delivery. This new model of public sector management, often regarded by many
authors as not a reform of the traditional public administration, but a transformation of the public
sector and its relationship with government and society (Hoos, J., G.Jenei and L. Vass, 2003)
emerged in the most advanced countries in addition to many developing ones.

Description Of The Snowy Egret
SPECIES PROFILE for SNOWY EGRET
(Egretta thula)
prepared for
MSC 276 Marine Vertebrate Zoology by Ashley Wells alwells705@cfcc.mail.edu Submitted:
February 8, 2017
Names and classification
Egretta thula
Snowy Egret
Synonyms: Aigrette neigeuse (French), Garceta pie dorado/Garza chusmita/Garza nivea (Spanish)
Family: Ardeidae (Herons, Bitterns, and Egrets)
Description
The snowy egret Egretta thula is a relatively large wading bird, standing at around 24 inches
[60.96 cm] high and displaying a brilliant white plumage. Very similar in appearance to the Great
Egret, the Snowy Egret can be distinguished by its bright yellow feet, sometimes referred to as
golden slippers, which contrast against its black legs. However, even ... Show more content on

Fig. 1 Distribution of Egretta thula throughout North and South America based on seasons.
Habitat
Snowy egrets inhabit marshes, ponds, swamps, and mudflats (Bull Farrand). Since snowy egrets
are wading birds, like other herons and egrets, they prefer habitats that are close to water. Wading
birds breed and build their nests in close proximity to water, allowing them to have access to food
while raising their young. In North America, the snowy egret s favorite habitats include salt
marshes, shallow bays, and mangroves. Snowy egrets prefer similar habitats throughout South and
Central America and the Caribbean (Weslosky, 2002).
Conservation Biology
Life cycle and reproduction
Breeding colonies, sometimes of multiple different species, form on islands surrounded by
water or guarded by a vegetative buffer. Such features are presumed to be desirable due to the
protection they provide from predators on the ground (Frederick, 2002). Nests are often built
using sticks, reeds, and other vegetation and constructed in trees, shrubs, or other aquatic
vegetation (Elphick, 2014). A clutch consists of 3 5 eggs, a pale blue green in color, laid in a nest
located in a bush or reedbed, specific to the species of egret (Bull Farrand, 1994). Breeding season
begins in March or early April and males will perform both flight and vocal displays to attract
females. Snowy egrets are social nesters

Essay On Pw Botha
According to Hermann Giliomee, President PW Botha s speech on 15 August 1985 to the National
Party (NP) of Natal was the turning point at which white rule in South Africa failed to turn. Botha
was expected to use the speech, broadcast to a huge international audience, to turn around the South
African crisis that had worsened after the outbreak of uprisings in the townships in September 1984.
Spurning the expectations of bold reforms, Botha projected himself as the uncompromising leader
of a white minority determined to fight to the end for its survival.
The speech triggered a massive outflow of capital and intensified sanctions against South Africa. A
line in Botha s speech, Today we have crossed the Rubicon , promptly became the object of scorn
and ridicule. Today it is still a major question why Botha refused to give a speech that the world
would have considered as a true crossing of the Rubicon (A Journal of Historical and Human
Sciences for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
De Klerk calls this episode: probably the greatest communication disaster in South African
history (1998:103). This was typical for the leadership of PW Botha. His stubbornness and pride
took over and left reason behind. The years that followed the failed Rubicon speech became the
most violent so far (Sisk 1995:65). This did not help to increase the reform eagerness of the
securocrat PW Botha. He linked reform and security tightly together, the one required the other.
Botha s political career got an abrupt ending as he suffered from a stroke in the beginning of 1989.
Even though he clenched the presidential chair, he finally had to give in to the pressure from his
fellow National Party politicians and hand over the baton to FW De Klerk. A leadership change that
produced a breakthrough in the democratization of South Africa that had a political stalemate

Pastoral Poetry Analysis
Attempting to treat the pastoral as a distinct mode which has endured from Theocritus and Philitas
to the Romanticist and finally Post Modernist world is highly anachronistic . And that is not the
assumption which I have made in the title. Instead of reading pastoral into the corpus of a poet
who may have not even conceived it, this essai (and I have chosen that word carefully) is an effort
to survey the poems of Catullus for evidence of agricultural, floral and rustic motifs. But Catullus is
not a poet with whom this mode is traditionally associated. Indeed, the standard account of Roman
Pastoral begins with the second birth of Theocratic poetry in Virgils Eclogues which are typically
credited with introducing the juxtaposition between urban and rural lifestyles as a political
allegory . But Virgil probably also drew on the agricultural works of Cato and later Varro. Hence,
since there is no evidence of this mode existing in previous Latin authors, Catullus must have
derived any understanding of pastoral from Cato and surviving works of the Hellenistic poets, in
particular Theocritus . Therein is problem with our question. Whether Theocritus employed
Arcadian motifs as a means of bringing out the pastoral charm of the land or understood them as
something constituting a literary mode that embodied a lifestyle is highly contentious, and for
Catullus even more so . This speculatory nature is probably what has dissuaded recent scholarship
from engaging in such a

How Did The Spanish Civil War Change In Barcelona City
At the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, there was a general revolutionary atmosphere
amongst the people in Barcelona. Worker s revolutionary parties had taken over the city,
boasting their signature red and black flags with hammer and sickles plastered to every wall.
Churches were demolished because of their hierarchical leadership and relationship to the
bourgeoisie. Shops and cafГ©s were collectivized and were painted with the red and black colors
of revolution. The streets of Barcelona remained full of boisterous crowds walking along to
revolutionary songs being played over the city. Not only had the town undergone a complete
transformation, but the people of Barcelona had also changed dramatically. There was virtually no

clothing and almost everyone dressed in working class clothes or militia style uniform. Those
who disagreed with the power of the working class were gone or laid low only to blend in until war
passed. The Spanish Civil Warhad sparked a belief of revolution and equality in Barcelona, and
also an atmosphere of war. The untidiness of war left streets dimly lit and shops scarce and
unkempt. There were shortages of necessary food items such as bread, as well as limited supplies
of coal and petrol. But despite the elements of war, there was little unemployment and due to the
low cost of living, very little begging. The people of Spain fought for a revolution to keep
democracy, to decrease the power of the church, and to take back the land, unions, and factories.
Above all, there was a belief in the revolution and the future, a feeling of having suddenly emerged
into an era of equality and freedom. (Page

Cost Of Woman
The Cost of Being a Woman The average woman menstruates from around age twelve until about
age fifty (Nelson). This means that for around thirty eight years, between approximately two to
seven days a month, a woman bleeds as her uterus sheds and menstrual blood flows from the
opening in the cervix out of the vagina (Nelson). During those times women are in need of
feminine hygiene products. In the majority of our country women pay sales tax on these necessary
products. In this way women are paying our government for simply being women. These products
are a necessity that women need, just like groceries, which are exempt from sales taxes in the
majority of the United States. Women should not have to pay extra taxes on products that they...

Perry Buck, a republican from Windsor, Colorado, stated in support of a bill that would cut the
tampon tax in Colorado, I m happy if they exempt the male hygiene products, to me, for the
government to be picking winners and losers, I m not crazy about that at all. Buck said this in
context inferring that removing the sales tax on items such as men s razors and razor blades
would level the field between sales tax placed on products specifically meant for women or men
(Stice). There are two issues with this solution. One being that women will then want the sales
tax removed from their razors and razor blades as well, putting men behind in what seems to be
some sort of government taxation game. This game would then cause a slippery slope of
requests for sales tax cuts on any number of male or female specific products. The second issue
being that in no way are razors an absolute necessity. Razors are a clear want, not a need. It is not
fair to compare a woman s need for a sanitary napkin to a man s want for a

A Research On Biometrics And Wireless Technique
Abstract The main purpose of the paper is assembling and developing an iris recognition system in
order to verify uniqueness of the human eye of faculty in a college for attendance management
system. This system based on biometrics and wireless technique solves the problem of spurious
attendance and the trouble of laying the corresponding network. Here biometric recognition is
performed with respect to iris because of its unique biological properties. The iris is unaffected by
external environmental factors and remains stable over time. It can make the college staff
attendance management more easy and effective. This paper includes image acquisition, the
preprocessing system, segmentation, feature extraction and recognition.
Keywords Iris recognition; preprocessing system; segmentation; feature extraction.
I.INTRODUCTION
Traditionally college staff attendance management methods were based on physical key, ID card,
password, etc. In all the above mentioned methods there are high chances of keys getting lost,
forgery or passwords may be forgotten. Due to these shortcomings and requirement for high level of
security have led to development of personal identification on next level using biometrics.
Biometrics refers to metrics related to human characteristics. It is used to identify individuals in a
group that ae under surveillance. Within few seconds biometric recognition is able to compare
thousands of records. Biometrics are of various kinds. Iris, facial, fingerprint

Popular Mechanics by Raymond Carver Essay
Popular Mechanics by Raymond Carver Works Cited Not IncludedTypically a story begins with an
exposition, which introduces the characters, setting and plot. In the short story ?Popular
Mechanics? by Raymond Carver, the exposition is excluded. The story begins with a short rise in
action, moves quickly to the climax and totally omits the resolution. Carver uses third person
objective narration to reveal the actions and the dialogue between a man and a woman. The narrator
gives very little descriptive details, never revealing the characters? thoughts or their motivation.
This allows the reader the freedom to interpret and develop their own opinions of the setting, plot,

Carver begins with the story?s conflict, a relationship between a man and woman that has
already gone extremely wrong. He does not need to tell the reader why or how this relationship
came to this point. Carver relies on the reader to know the usual reasons that cause people to
split up. Therefore, this gives readers the opportunity to attach their own explanation. As the
title, ?Popular Mechanics? implies, it is the common workings of relationships that can be
applied throughout this story. Finally, it appears that Carver does not give an adequate
description of his characters. The male and the female characters in this story are flat, stock
characters. Because Carver relies on commonly held gender based stereotypes this helps the
reader to create his or her own image of the characters. The need for physical or psychological
description is not necessary. For example, the woman?s opening statement, ?I?m glad you?re
leaving! I?m glad you?re leaving! Do you hear?? (265), illustrates that she is a stereotypical,
emotional female, who is out of control. Furthermore, the man?s refusal to acknowledge her
illustrates a stereotypical male response to conflict. It shows that he considers her unworthy of a
response. As if the same fight has occurred many times before and he knows there is no sense in
replaying this scene again. The story escalates to a

Making the Best Use of Pakistan s Natural Resources
INTRODUCTION
Pakistan is rich in natural resources. It has mountains , plains , deserts , fertile land , rivers and
oceans. Natural resources are very important to the development and prosperity of a country. The
important thing is to use them for the welfare of human beings and the development of the country
economically because the progress of a country depends entirely on the use of available resources.
Significant natural resources are described as follows :
1. Soil
Soil dry Pakistan belong to group having high carbonate and calcium poor in organic matter.
These vary in color from reddish brown in the north to the red or gray in the south. These soils
are generally fertile due to training. The barrage of new stores near the river called Khaddar and
mostly consists of sand . The old bar alluvial plateau, called Bangar , consists of finer particles
loams . At the foot of the mountains the soil is sandy and generally becomes thinner towards the
plains where Khankah , the concentration of limestone is occasionally . The soils of the deserts of
Thal and Thar and Balochistan are carried by the wind. In southern Potwar is a thin layer of
residual floor coating .
2.Water
Water is a basic necessity of life . Human beings , animals and plants can not live without water.
Water is essential for maintaining the quality of life on earth . This finite commodity has a direct
impact on almost all sectors of the economy. In Pakistan its importance is more than ordinary

Goals For College Freshman Essay
James Mason Wood said, Education today, more than ever before, must see clearly the dual
objectives: education for living and education for making a living. When people go to school
because they have to, then it is only education for living. When people try hard and get a good
education, then they get good jobs to make a living. West Texas A M University, home of the

need to have four English credits, four for math, four for science, three and a half for social
science, half a credit for economics, one for physical education, one for speech, and six credits of

they are allowed into a classroom. They also need to submit their high school transcripts. To be
able to get accepted to WTAMU, students need to obtain 2.0 GPA. They also need to have certain

The Theory Of Convivencia Between Christians And Muslims
Is the theory of convivencia between Christians, Jews and Muslims in Iberia convincing in the first
four centuries after 711?

Word Count: 1904
The theory of convivencia between Christians, Jews and Muslims is considered to be the period in
Medieval Spain in which the three Abrahamic religions were able to coexist and live together
peacefully. The notion of convivencia not only refers to the overall tolerance of Christians and
Jews to be able to practice their religion in Al Andalus, it also incorporates the idea of members of
these three faiths sharing a common culture, a language and working towards advancing
civilisation through poetry, literature and science. Historians who have studied this issue are
largely divided on whether this time period really was as harmonious as it is commonly
described. Historians such as Bat Ye or highlight the lack of convivencia by placing emphasis on
how leaders of Al Andalus would enforce rules such as granting non Muslims with the status of
dhimmi, essentially making them second class citizens which by today s standards would
undoubtedly lead to the theory of convivencia being somewhat unpersuasive. However, relative to
this era, Islamic Iberia was the apex of religious tolerance, immensely surpassing the level of
tolerance in surrounding nations and empires. Montgomery Watt goes as far to say that under
Muslim rule, Jews and Christians were considered as People of the Book who were to be a

Charles Dickens s Oliver Twist was published in 1837 during the Victorian Era. The book was

technologies along with the British imperial expansion led to a skyrocket in population and
wealth. The increase of people and wealth made Britain s poor even poorer, and resulted in
distasteful practices that led to the Victorian Era being known as a time of contradictions. Charles

Biological Networks And The Biomedical And Genomic Fields
In the past two decades, technological advances in the biomedical and genomic fields have
generated enormous volumes of omics data. These data continue to be scattered in various
databases accessible through the World Wide Web (Table 1), there have been some significant
efforts to integrate these to answer specific questions (e.g., candidate disease geneprioritization1,
tissue specific interaction networks2, etc.). Concomitant with the development of specialized
powerful gene and protein and disease variant annotation databases, there has been an explosion in
the number of publications in the scientific literature. For example, in October 2015, there were
approximately 43000 journals in PubMed (ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pubmed/J_Entrez.txt) and more

Globe Theater Research Paper
The Globe Theater s beautiful building design and interesting former times have been a very
notable element of our past, it had even held many of Shakespeare s famous plays. The whole
world is a playhouse and one of the most important playhouses in the world would have to be The
Globe Theater . It is nearly impossible to think of our world without The Globe Theater and all the
interesting occurrences that have happened involving it. This theater could have been nothing more
than a building if it were for all the important history that was incorporated into it making it be
such an important piece of history. Between 1597 and 1599, The Globe Theater was built and it

Speech On The Atomic Age
On December 8, 1953 Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered an address before the Members of the
General Assembly voicing his concern for the Global Nuclear Arms Race, calling for a
resolution. Initially, only the United States possessed atomic weapons, however in the year 1949
the Soviet Union detonated an atomic bomb, sparking the nuclear arms race. The addressment
bolstered by the addemance of Eisenhower s call for a cease of Nuclear arms production, calling
for the ownership of these devices to be placed into the hands of those whom are to strip the device,
acclimating them to a peaceful environment, one in which we are capable of harnessing the very
power that could have wrought them to desolation, into the next age. Eisenhower s speech, entitled

International News Coverage in Indian English Print Media Dailies A Qualitative Content
Analysis of The Times of India, The Hindu and The Indian Express Introduction India is home to
one of the largest, most diverse print media sectors in the world. With a whopping 82237
newspapers registered as of 2012, out of which a staggering 11,478 are in English, the Indian
media seems to be thriving and feeding an incredible number of people information every single
day. Despite these overwhelmingly positive numbers, a lot of concerns have risen regarding the
actual content of newspapers. Arguments of commercialization and paid journalism (which are
rampant) aside, there has been some discontent regarding the lack of coverage of International
Issues in the Indian Media, particularly Indian Newspapers. To put things into perspective, one
can look no further than the Syrian Crisis that is still raging just yonder and look first at the
general ignorance of the average Indian how many are actually aware of one of the greatest
crimes against humanity that is currently underway? With over 170,000 civilians recorded dead,
as per the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, one would expect significant concern fuelled by
the media providing significant coverage of gruelling events. However, as illustrated in an article

Difference Between Self-Esteem And Self Esteem
When individuals compare themselves to others, generally, people tend to use upward comparison
through the idea that one day they will become that ideal image. This could mean in wealth, health,
happiness, etc. When comparing to others, many people feel inadequate and their self esteem
suffers for it. If someone cannot reach what they aspire to be, especially when comparing
themselves to others who have accomplished these goals, their self esteemis generally lower than
average. Studying this topic allows insight into how others affect an individual s self esteem when
they are compared and the differences that can affect the social comparison. This importance is to
determine what features and aspects of life are causing lower self esteem in individuals that use
upward social comparison and how these affects can be different for everyone. The intent of this
study is to correlate whether people feel better or worse about themselves through upward social
comparison to general role models. This is important because role models can have a peculiar
impact on someone s self esteem, depending on how that role model behaves. In previous studies,
the documentation on upward social comparison displays how different aspects can affect how an
individual may see themselves as lesser. Roy F. Baumeister discusses in Self Esteem: The Puzzle
of Low Self Esteem, in social comparison situations, people may sometimes make upward
comparisons, presumably to gain more information about a task, or

Per Business Insider, Forty-Two Million Prostitutes Work
Per Business Insider, forty two million prostitutes work in both legalized and illegalized countries.
Many countries have taken different legal paths to deal with prostitution. These paths include;
prohibition, making all forms of prostitution illegal; legalize, making all forms legal; and
decriminalizing, normalizing prostitution. The debate of how to handle prostitution cannot be
discussed until prostitution is understood. The Merriam Webster dictionary describes prostitution as
the practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for payment. Prior to the
nineteenth century, prostitution in the US was legal in red light districts, zoned areas where there

As the policies currently stand in the US, no health requirements for prostitutes are in place and this
damages public health. The justice system assumes that deterring people from participating in
prostitution will prevent the spread of sexual transmitted diseases but this is not the case and has
not always been the argument against prostitution. In an article called Why is Prostitution
Criminalized? An Alternative Viewpoint on the Construction of Sex Work, by Rebecca Hayes
Smith and Zahar Sherkarkhar, researches argue that before the nineteenth century the debate was
based on moral grounds, but after the nineteenth century it was shifted to the medical issues. It is
especially interesting that, At the time doctors urged the government to regulate and license
prostitution so that prostitutes would be required to take medical exams, because medical
professionals were only wanting exams while the government pushed that illegalization was the
only way to prevent the spread of STDs (Smith and Sherkarkahr 45). Nonetheless, protecting
prostitutes and clients from STDs is a big concern in all countries but illegalization is not the way
to protect the public. In an article What to know about Nevada s legal brothels, by Michael

The Debate Over Gun Control
Never A Win Win The topic of gun control has become very popular in recent years as there is
now more controversy than ever about the role that guns play in today s world. I have come to
be interested in this topic because it seems like not a day goes by anymore where there isn t a
newspaper published with an article slandering either the pro or anti gun control activists. Going
into this topic, I was assuming that I would end up reading about a lot of school shootings and
how it is just guns that are causing so many deaths each year, but there seems to be a bit more to it
than that. It really is no surprise that this topic has become so popular as of late, considering that in
2014 there were roughly 51,000 firearmrelated incidents, and in 2015 roughly 53,000 incidents. If
there is one thing that I for sure already know, its that guns have a huge impact on our society.
There are so many lives that are impacted by gun related incidents every year that it is nearly
impossible to get away from. So the question stands, are guns a necessary and helpful tool for
Americans to wield, or are they the merciless killing machines that they have been publicized as in
recent years? While researching gun control, one of the first major sources that I found was of
course the second amendment to the United States constitution. The second amendment is as
follows, A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the
people to keep and

subjective shot of the newly weds inside of their kitchen. The shots of Jefferies eyes looking out of
frame let us know that when the shot changes we are looking from his perspective. This particular
moment in the clip represents the Hitchcockian voyeuristic theme that the film is based on. The

The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today s Music
I believe that it would be difficult for someone to make the argument that Negro spirituals have not
been influential in the field of music, much less the realm of gospel music today. However, church
members often do not make the time to reflect on the heritage of a hymn or song to realize the
meaning that the particular piece has carried with it through the decades, even centuries. With this
in mind, I am going to look at the history of the Negro spiritual and then at specific hymns in the
1991 Baptist Hymnal, published by Convention Press, to see just what impact the Negro spiritual
has had on today s church music. I believe that we will find that these songs have had a ... Show

At first, however, slaves were not using their music to glorify the God worshipped by their

Steven Goldberg Male Dominance Theory
Male dominance A biology based theory on competitiveness is the male dominance theory .
Developer of this theory, Steven Goldberg, presents in his book why the biological difference
between men and women leads to male domination (1993). This biological difference is mainly
based to be found the difference in testosterone levels between men and women (Goldberg, 1993:
131). The level of testosterone would result in men having greater tendencies to be aggressive and a
drive to dominate others. This aggressive advantage would men also make more competitive and
self assertive. In combination this leads to men being more elicited to be dominant on average than
women on average. Men s aggressive advantage would especially stand out in situations that are
hierarchically structured. Goldberg expands his theory by connecting the previous with the
presence of institutions as he argues that testosterone is a required condition for creating institutions
(Golberg, 1993; 131). Through this he suggests that the testosterone induced dominance is a
necessity in building hierarchies. In all, Goldbergs theory does not state that... Show more content

The female moral believe system would be consistently repressed by societal norms that are built

Disadvantages Of Disaster Risk
Disaster risk indicates the possibility of adverse effects in the future. It originates from the
collaboration of social and environmental processes, from the mixture of natural hazards and the
vulnerabilities of exposed elements.
Due to increases in the exposure of persons and assets, the brutality of the impacts of disasters
depends strongly on the level of exposure and vulnerability in the affected area, and proof indicates
that risk has increased worldwide largely. For example, long term increases in economic losses
from weather and climate related disasters is caused by increasing exposure (IPCC 2012). There
have been limited decreases in vulnerability as a result of, for instance, better building standards and
compliance, but these reducing effects are geographically rough and there are many examples of
increased vulnerability, mostly in large urban centres and in developing countries. This has created
new risk and potential disaster losses mainly at the local and community level with the poor and
demoted, marginal populations, women and children, and those dependent on single sector
economies suspiciously affected.
Exposure:
Exposure refers to the portfolio of essentials in an area in which hazard events may occur. Later, if
population and economic resources were not located in potentially dangerous settings, there would
be no problem of disaster risk. Exposure is a required, but not enough, factor of risk. It is possible
to be exposed but not vulnerable (for

Modern Approach For Liability Of The State, And Public...
The overarching guidelines to the modern approach to liability for negligence in tort go back to
Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] with Lord Atkin setting out the neighbour principle, such that
one has a duty to take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which one can reasonably
foresee would be likely to injure a neighbour (one who I ought reasonably have in contemplation
as sufficiently close and directly affected by one s act and omissions). However, the
development of the common law approach to liability of the state, and public authorities, for
harms inflicted by third parties for whom the state is not responsible, can be seen to be
restricted, both in the interpretation of required proximity of the party so harmed, and on the
basis of public policy . The current position with reference to public policy restrictions can be
found in Gorringe v Caldedale MBC [2004], the judgement on which gave a significant review
of the state of the law. In this case, Mrs Gorringe was injured following a collision between her
car and a bus; she contested that the local authority s statutory duty in terms of highway
maintenance created a corresponding actionable common law duty. This claim failed at both the
Court of Appeal and House of Lords, with key rulings that: if a statutory duty does not give rise to
a private right to sue for breach, then the duty cannot create a duty of care that would not have been
owed at common law if the statute were not there. Lord Scott said that

Power Of Six
The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore is the second book in this series which began with I Am
Number Four. This is a classic story of good fighting against evil, but on a galactic scale. It tells
the unbelievable journey of ten alien Lorien children (called Garde) hidden from ferocious alien
hunters called Mogadorians, who are determined to eliminate this special race from growing up.
The Mogadorians have used up their own planetary resources and are now expanding outward,
seeking more resources to sustain them. Lorien, the closest planet is their first target. In an effort
to save the Lorien race, nine children entrusted with powers of the elders (called Legacies) are sent
away in the hopes that when their Legacies develop, they will be strong... Show more content on

The story takes time to remind the reader about specifics of the first book. Seven (Marina)
describes the familiar feeling she experiences when she looks at John s (Four) image, while
reading breaking news, I scroll back to John s image, and when my gaze meets his, my hands
begin to shake. His eyes even in this sketch there s something familiar about them. Nobody can
convince me now that he isn t one of the six remaining Garde, still alive in this foreign world. I
was reminded of the battle at John s high school, and the terrorism cover up. Their struggles to
stay alive made me want to read the book at one sitting. Reading Sam s objection to swimming
across the freezing water to escape from the Tennessee police, I could imagine what the setting
might look like, how cold the water might feel, and how afraid Sam seemed, What? John, do you
understand what happens to the human body when it s in freezing water? Cardiac arrest from
shock, for one. And if that doesn t kill you, then the loss of feeling in your arms and legs will
make it impossible to swim. We ll freeze and drown. And finally, the constant action moved the
story forward. When John (Four) meets up with Nine in the Mogadorian prison, he loses his
best friend Sam in the chaos. Soon after John says, The wind is knocked out of me; and when I
look up, I see Nine spitting blood out. He s grinning. John goes on to ask Nine, Are you crazy?
You re enjoying this? And from Nine s response, you can guess he is enjoying getting some
revenge on the Mogadorians, I ve been locked up for over a year. This is the best day of my life!
The constant theme throughout books 1 and 2 of the series is that these Garde never quit, they
never give up. These are great lessons for real

  • 2. Research Paper On Lou Gehrig s Disease Diseases and infections. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig s disease is a disease that affects your motor neurons in your spinal cord and brainstem. The decline of your upper neurons causes your muscles to tighten and the diminishment of your lower neurons causes your muscles to shrink down in size. When the neurons die, your brainno loses the ability to control your voluntary muscles like eating, speaking, moving, and eventually breathing. Most people diagnosed with ALS live up to 3 5 years after the diagnosis. Individuals between the ages of 40 and 70 are more likely to have this disease and nearly 6,000 people are diagnosed with the disease every year. There are two different forms of ALS, familial and sporadic. Familial... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Watching a human being diminish to a hardly moving, barely breathing body is one of the hardest experiences I have witnessed. My grandfather was a pilot for a commercial airline for over twenty years. He was able to fly around the world with his daughter (my mom) and together they were able to go to London, Italy, Paris, and Spain. My grandparents had lived in Wisconsin most of their lives before my grandfather was diagnosed with ALS. After my grandpa had fallen a few times and my grandmother was unable to get him up, we decided to move them out near us. He has moved into a retirement home just down the road from our house. Over the past 3 years I have gotten to know my grandparents so much better and I wouldn t trade that for the world. Although Lou Gehrig s Disease ravished my grandfather s body, his faith in Christ remained steadfast. I watched as a disease took away my grandfather s physical abilities use of his legs, use his hands, his sense of taste. However, even though his body was failing around him, his mind remained remarkably intact. Through these challenging months, I never once saw my grandfather get angry with God or question why this was happening to him. He took everything in stride, fully trusting in God. You see, my grandfather firmly believed with his whole heart that God had a purpose and plan for his life. I saw him witness to those around him our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sensible Violence Within Cultural Texts Essay examples According to Ian Almond in the article Mullahs, Mystics, Moderates and Moghuls: The Many Islams of Salman Rushdie , Rushdie wrote this piece from a medieval religiousness perspective, most pointedly making use of symbols such as the ancient holy relic whose disappearance inspires countless deaths (Almond 3). These violent deaths mark something more in the theme of the book; presumptuously, Rushdie is attempting to enlighten his readers with the many faces of Islam, this particular story showing the face of Islam who s built in obsolescence stifles the new (Almond 3). The vial from the prophet Muhammadis laced with mystical and gruesome power, which to all whom encounter it brings about a violent death or madness; this leads me to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Salman s select choice in killing them both in these different ways could be a symbolic of defined Islamic gender roles, such that women are justifiably slaughtered by their superiors, while men are indirectly killed. Instances like this exemplify Salman s negative tone towards old Islam; no religious culture should turn to violent outbreaks so drastically and he s using these instances to prove that point. in his somnolent anger, the moneylender thrust his sword fatally through its [Atta s] heart (1524) he was so overwhelmed by remorse that he turned the sword upon himself (1524) Hashim s committing suicide after realizing that he s murdered his own daughter proves that his conscience is still intact regardless of the relic s power over him. That earlier in the short story had allowed him to justify selfishly keeping the vial for himself, in his remorse, which is solidified in killing himself. For the reader, this evokes sympathy toward his character, as the blame for his actions is passed on to the hair s evil magic. Out of this emerges a theme of individualism versus collectivism; the first side of Hashim is individualism, as he sought to inculcate... a healthy independence of spirit in his children. In addition, he presents himself to be not a godly man , but rather as a man who lives honorably, which could arguably ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Weber s Stress On The Formal Aspect Of Organization This model has been thoroughly critiqued. Many scholars have pointed out that Weber s stress on the formal aspect of organization in fact ignored the informal structure of relationships which represent the reality of organizational life. Goal displacement, where rules become an end in themselves is an instance of an unwanted result of this rule bound method. Parsons highlights the potential rivalry which may arise between a bureaucrat s authority correlated to his rank in the hierarchy, and that taken from technical expertise (Parsons, 1960). Other members of the organization will not know who s orders to follow regarding the mismatch the person with the appropriate command or an individual possessing greater expertise. (Gouldner, 1959), determines that individuals take their own ideologies into the workplace, which eventually affect bureaucracy, making the concept of a value free bureaucracy rather doubtful. During the 1980 s and 1990 s the New Public Management approach placed focus on the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of government organizations, instruments and programs, and higher quality service delivery. This new model of public sector management, often regarded by many authors as not a reform of the traditional public administration, but a transformation of the public sector and its relationship with government and society (Hoos, J., G.Jenei and L. Habitat Snowy egrets inhabit marshes, ponds, swamps, and mudflats (Bull Farrand). Since snowy egrets are wading birds, like other herons and egrets, they prefer habitats that are close to water. Wading birds breed and build their nests in close proximity to water, allowing them to have access to food while raising their young. In North America, the snowy egret s favorite habitats include salt marshes, shallow bays, and mangroves. Snowy egrets prefer similar habitats throughout South and Central America and the Caribbean (Weslosky, 2002). Conservation Biology Life cycle and reproduction Breeding colonies, sometimes of multiple different species, form on islands surrounded by water or guarded by a vegetative buffer. Such features are presumed to be desirable due to the protection they provide from predators on the ground (Frederick, 2002). Nests are often built using sticks, reeds, and other vegetation and constructed in trees, shrubs, or other aquatic vegetation (Elphick, 2014). A clutch consists of 3 5 eggs, a pale blue green in color, laid in a nest located in a bush or reedbed, specific to the species of egret (Bull Farrand, 1994). Breeding season begins in March or early April and males will perform both flight and vocal displays to attract females. Snowy egrets are social nesters

Essay On Pw Botha According to Hermann Giliomee, President PW Botha s speech on 15 August 1985 to the National Party (NP) of Natal was the turning point at which white rule in South Africa failed to turn. Botha was expected to use the speech, broadcast to a huge international audience, to turn around the South African crisis that had worsened after the outbreak of uprisings in the townships in September 1984. Spurning the expectations of bold reforms, Botha projected himself as the uncompromising leader of a white minority determined to fight to the end for its survival. The speech triggered a massive outflow of capital and intensified sanctions against South Africa. A line in Botha s speech, Today we have crossed the Rubicon , promptly became the object of scorn and ridicule. Today it is still a major question why Botha refused to give a speech that the world would have considered as a true crossing of the Rubicon (A Journal of Historical and Human Sciences for ... He linked reform and security tightly together, the one required the other. Botha s political career got an abrupt ending as he suffered from a stroke in the beginning of 1989. • 8. Pastoral Poetry Analysis Attempting to treat the pastoral as a distinct mode which has endured from Theocritus and Philitas to the Romanticist and finally Post Modernist world is highly anachronistic . And that is not the assumption which I have made in the title. Instead of reading pastoral into the corpus of a poet who may have not even conceived it, this essai (and I have chosen that word carefully) is an effort to survey the poems of Catullus for evidence of agricultural, floral and rustic motifs. But Catullus is not a poet with whom this mode is traditionally associated. Indeed, the standard account of Roman Pastoral begins with the second birth of Theocratic poetry in Virgils Eclogues which are typically credited with introducing the juxtaposition between urban and rural lifestyles as a political allegory . But Virgil probably also drew on the agricultural works of Cato and later Varro. Hence, since there is no evidence of this mode existing in previous Latin authors, Catullus must have derived any understanding of pastoral from Cato and surviving works of the Hellenistic poets, in particular Theocritus . Therein is problem with our question. Whether Theocritus employed Arcadian motifs as a means of bringing out the pastoral charm of the land or understood them as something constituting a literary mode that embodied a lifestyle is highly contentious, and for Catullus even more so . This speculatory nature is probably what has dissuaded recent scholarship from engaging in such a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Worker s revolutionary parties had taken over the city, boasting their signature red and black flags with hammer and sickles plastered to every wall. Churches were demolished because of their hierarchical leadership and relationship to the bourgeoisie. This means that for around thirty eight years, between approximately two to seven days a month, a woman bleeds as her uterus sheds and menstrual blood flows from the opening in the cervix out of the vagina (Nelson). During those times women are in need of feminine hygiene products. In the majority of our country women pay sales tax on these necessary products. In this way women are paying our government for simply being women. Buck said this in context inferring that removing the sales tax on items such as men s razors and razor blades would level the field between sales tax placed on products specifically meant for women or men (Stice). There are two issues with this solution. One being that women will then want the sales tax removed from their razors and razor blades as well, putting men behind in what seems to be some sort of government taxation game. This game would then cause a slippery slope of requests for sales tax cuts on any number of male or female specific products. The second issue being that in no way are razors an absolute necessity. This system based on biometrics and wireless technique solves the problem of spurious attendance and the trouble of laying the corresponding network. Here biometric recognition is performed with respect to iris because of its unique biological properties. The iris is unaffected by external environmental factors and remains stable over time. It can make the college staff attendance management more easy and effective. This paper includes image acquisition, the preprocessing system, segmentation, feature extraction and recognition. Keywords Iris recognition; preprocessing system; segmentation; feature extraction. I.INTRODUCTION Traditionally college staff attendance management methods were based on physical key, ID card, password, etc. In all the above mentioned methods there are high chances of keys getting lost, forgery or passwords may be forgotten. Due to these shortcomings and requirement for high level of security have led to development of personal identification on next level using biometrics. Biometrics refers to metrics related to human characteristics. It is used to identify individuals in a group that ae under surveillance. In the short story ?Popular Mechanics? by Raymond Carver, the exposition is excluded. The story begins with a short rise in action, moves quickly to the climax and totally omits the resolution. Carver uses third person objective narration to reveal the actions and the dialogue between a man and a woman. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carver begins with the story?s conflict, a relationship between a man and woman that has already gone extremely wrong. He does not need to tell the reader why or how this relationship came to this point. Carver relies on the reader to know the usual reasons that cause people to split up. Therefore, this gives readers the opportunity to attach their own explanation. As the title, ?Popular Mechanics? implies, it is the common workings of relationships that can be applied throughout this story. Finally, it appears that Carver does not give an adequate description of his characters. The male and the female characters in this story are flat, stock characters. Because Carver relies on commonly held gender based stereotypes this helps the reader to create his or her own image of the characters. The need for physical or psychological description is not necessary. For example, the woman?s opening statement, ?I?m glad you?re leaving! I?m glad you?re leaving! Do you hear?? (265), illustrates that she is a stereotypical, emotional female, who is out of control. Furthermore, the man?s refusal to acknowledge her illustrates a stereotypical male response to conflict. It shows that he considers her unworthy of a response. As if the same fight has occurred many times before and he knows there is no sense in replaying this scene again. The story escalates to a ... The Theory Of Convivencia Between Christians And Muslims Is the theory of convivencia between Christians, Jews and Muslims in Iberia convincing in the first four centuries after 711? 4243296 Word Count: 1904 The theory of convivencia between Christians, Jews and Muslims is considered to be the period in Medieval Spain in which the three Abrahamic religions were able to coexist and live together peacefully. The notion of convivencia not only refers to the overall tolerance of Christians and Jews to be able to practice their religion in Al Andalus, it also incorporates the idea of members of these three faiths sharing a common culture, a language and working towards advancing civilisation through poetry, literature and science. Historians who have studied this issue are largely divided on whether this time period really was as harmonious as it is commonly described. Historians such as Bat Ye or highlight the lack of convivencia by placing emphasis on how leaders of Al Andalus would enforce rules such as granting non Muslims with the status of dhimmi, essentially making them second class citizens which by today s standards would undoubtedly lead to the theory of convivencia being somewhat unpersuasive. These data continue to be scattered in various databases accessible through the World Wide Web (Table 1), there have been some significant efforts to integrate these to answer specific questions (e.g., candidate disease geneprioritization1, tissue specific interaction networks2, etc.). Concomitant with the development of specialized powerful gene and protein and disease variant annotation databases, there has been an explosion in the number of publications in the scientific literature. For example, in October 2015, there were approximately 43000 journals in PubMed (ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pubmed/J_Entrez.txt) and more than 21.5 million PubMed abstracts. • 25. Difference Between Self-Esteem And Self Esteem When individuals compare themselves to others, generally, people tend to use upward comparison through the idea that one day they will become that ideal image. This could mean in wealth, health, happiness, etc. When comparing to others, many people feel inadequate and their self esteem suffers for it. If someone cannot reach what they aspire to be, especially when comparing themselves to others who have accomplished these goals, their self esteemis generally lower than average. Studying this topic allows insight into how others affect an individual s self esteem when they are compared and the differences that can affect the social comparison. This importance is to determine what features and aspects of life are causing lower self esteem in individuals that use upward social comparison and how these affects can be different for everyone. The intent of this study is to correlate whether people feel better or worse about themselves through upward social comparison to general role models. This is important because role models can have a peculiar impact on someone s self esteem, depending on how that role model behaves. In previous studies, the documentation on upward social comparison displays how different aspects can affect how an individual may see themselves as lesser. Roy F. • 27. Per Business Insider, Forty-Two Million Prostitutes Work Per Business Insider, forty two million prostitutes work in both legalized and illegalized countries. Many countries have taken different legal paths to deal with prostitution. These paths include; prohibition, making all forms of prostitution illegal; legalize, making all forms legal; and decriminalizing, normalizing prostitution. The debate of how to handle prostitution cannot be discussed until prostitution is understood. The Merriam Webster dictionary describes prostitution as the practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for payment. Prior to the nineteenth century, prostitution in the US was legal in red light districts, zoned areas where there was little conflict between communities and businesses, and the... The justice system assumes that deterring people from participating in prostitution will prevent the spread of sexual transmitted diseases but this is not the case and has not always been the argument against prostitution. In an article called Why is Prostitution Criminalized? An Alternative Viewpoint on the Construction of Sex Work, by Rebecca Hayes Smith and Zahar Sherkarkhar, researches argue that before the nineteenth century the debate was based on moral grounds, but after the nineteenth century it was shifted to the medical issues. It is especially interesting that, At the time doctors urged the government to regulate and license prostitution so that prostitutes would be required to take medical exams, because medical professionals were only wanting exams while the government pushed that illegalization was the only way to prevent the spread of STDs (Smith and Sherkarkahr 45). Nonetheless, protecting prostitutes and clients from STDs is a big concern in all countries but illegalization is not the way to protect the public. • 29. The Debate Over Gun Control Never A Win Win The topic of gun control has become very popular in recent years as there is now more controversy than ever about the role that guns play in today s world. I have come to be interested in this topic because it seems like not a day goes by anymore where there isn t a newspaper published with an article slandering either the pro or anti gun control activists. Going into this topic, I was assuming that I would end up reading about a lot of school shootings and how it is just guns that are causing so many deaths each year, but there seems to be a bit more to it than that. It really is no surprise that this topic has become so popular as of late, considering that in 2014 there were roughly 51,000 firearmrelated incidents, and in 2015 roughly 53,000 incidents. If there is one thing that I for sure already know, its that guns have a huge impact on our society. There are so many lives that are impacted by gun related incidents every year that it is nearly impossible to get away from. So the question stands, are guns a necessary and helpful tool for Americans to wield, or are they the merciless killing machines that they have been publicized as in recent years? While researching gun control, one of the first major sources that I found was of course the second amendment to the United States constitution. The second amendment is as follows, A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The shots of Jefferies eyes looking out of frame let us know that when the shot changes we are looking from his perspective. This particular moment in the clip represents the Hitchcockian voyeuristic theme that the film is based on. His grin is friendly and causes a shift in the audiences initial perception of the mysterious woman. The close up utilizes the entire frame to capture Grace Kelly s natural beauty. The comfortability of her movements suggests that she is familiar with the arrangement of his apartment due to the fact that she has been there enough times to become familiar with his place. The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today s Music Essay The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today s Music I believe that it would be difficult for someone to make the argument that Negro spirituals have not been influential in the field of music, much less the realm of gospel music today. However, church members often do not make the time to reflect on the heritage of a hymn or song to realize the meaning that the particular piece has carried with it through the decades, even centuries. With this in mind, I am going to look at the history of the Negro spiritual and then at specific hymns in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal, published by Convention Press, to see just what impact the Negro spiritual has had on today s church music. Obviously, they had brought their religion with them, one considered pagan and inappropriate by Christians in the American colonies. Christian missionaries were very disapproving regarding the religious practices of the slaves, and they began to verbalize their disapproval and work to convert the new African slaves. Seventeenth century author Morgan Godwin describes their religious practices thus: . . . nothing is more barbarous, and contrary to Christianity, than their . . . Idolatrous Dances, and Revels; in which they usually spend the Sunday . . . And here, that I may not be thought too rashly to impute Idolatry to their Dances, my Conjecture is raised upon this ground . . . for that they use their Dances as a means to procure Rain: Some of them having been known to beg this Liberty upon the Week Days, in order thereunto (qtd. in Maultsby 3). Apparently, slave owners did not immediately set out to influence the religious practices of their slaves; however, it would not be long before the masters began to insist that their slaves practice their religion, Christianity. • 38. Steven Goldberg Male Dominance Theory Male dominance A biology based theory on competitiveness is the male dominance theory . Developer of this theory, Steven Goldberg, presents in his book why the biological difference between men and women leads to male domination (1993). This biological difference is mainly based to be found the difference in testosterone levels between men and women (Goldberg, 1993: 131). The level of testosterone would result in men having greater tendencies to be aggressive and a drive to dominate others. This aggressive advantage would men also make more competitive and self assertive. In combination this leads to men being more elicited to be dominant on average than women on average. Men s aggressive advantage would especially stand out in situations that are hierarchically structured. Goldberg expands his theory by connecting the previous with the presence of institutions as he argues that testosterone is a required condition for creating institutions (Golberg, 1993; 131). Through this he suggests that the testosterone induced dominance is a necessity in building hierarchies. In all, Goldbergs theory does not state that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 40. Disadvantages Of Disaster Risk Disaster risk indicates the possibility of adverse effects in the future. It originates from the collaboration of social and environmental processes, from the mixture of natural hazards and the vulnerabilities of exposed elements. Due to increases in the exposure of persons and assets, the brutality of the impacts of disasters depends strongly on the level of exposure and vulnerability in the affected area, and proof indicates that risk has increased worldwide largely. For example, long term increases in economic losses from weather and climate related disasters is caused by increasing exposure (IPCC 2012). There have been limited decreases in vulnerability as a result of, for instance, better building standards and compliance, but these reducing effects are geographically rough and there are many examples of increased vulnerability, mostly in large urban centres and in developing countries. This has created new risk and potential disaster losses mainly at the local and community level with the poor and demoted, marginal populations, women and children, and those dependent on single sector economies suspiciously affected. Exposure: Exposure refers to the portfolio of essentials in an area in which hazard events may occur. Later, if population and economic resources were not located in potentially dangerous settings, there would be no problem of disaster risk. Exposure is a required, but not enough, factor of risk. • 41. Modern Approach For Liability Of The State, And Public... The overarching guidelines to the modern approach to liability for negligence in tort go back to Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] with Lord Atkin setting out the neighbour principle, such that one has a duty to take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which one can reasonably foresee would be likely to injure a neighbour (one who I ought reasonably have in contemplation as sufficiently close and directly affected by one s act and omissions). However, the development of the common law approach to liability of the state, and public authorities, for harms inflicted by third parties for whom the state is not responsible, can be seen to be restricted, both in the interpretation of required proximity of the party so harmed, and on the basis of public policy . The current position with reference to public policy restrictions can be found in Gorringe v Caldedale MBC [2004], the judgement on which gave a significant review of the state of the law. In this case, Mrs Gorringe was injured following a collision between her car and a bus; she contested that the local authority s statutory duty in terms of highway maintenance created a corresponding actionable common law duty. This claim failed at both the Court of Appeal and House of Lords, with key rulings that: if a statutory duty does not give rise to a private right to sue for breach, then the duty cannot create a duty of care that would not have been owed at common law if the statute were not there.
