Tone is a device used by authors in order to evoke emotions in their audience. The tone can be
anything but it greatly effects how the reader receives the message of the piece. For example I
analyzed two different poems, both with the same subject but with very different tones. The way I
received each poem was very different. The first, by Richard Lovelacetitled To Lucastahad a
passionate tone while the second poem by Wilfred Owen titled Dulce et Decorum Esthad a cynical
tone. The tones of these poems were created using similar literary devices but their results were
very different.
While short, Richard Lovelace says much through the tone in his 17th century poem To Lucasta.
At first glance the poem seems very organized with 3 stanzas each with 4 lines. Every other line
rhymes, which gives the audience a feel of playfulness and whimsy. One would assume that the
message of the poem would also be just as organized. However, the speaker seems to be battling
with feelings of regret and excitement. The overall tone of this poem seems to be apologetic yet
passionate. The speaker is apologetic about his decision to go to war but also seems to be
passionate and enticed by the thoughts of his new adventure. Lovelace uses imagery and figure
of speech to create this tone by depicting his life before the war and his life during the war as two

Empathy in the odyssey We often think that we are a caring and kind person but when we
become tired, stressed, or rushed all empathy we have can seem to vanish. We start to put our
own needs first and others second. But what if we weren t always like this? The odyssey is a
perfect example of what happens when we don t have empathy for others. In book 9 Odysseusand
Polyphemus fail to understand each other leading to some unfortunate results. Polyphemus shows
almost no empathy in his interaction with Odysseus but he shows even less, showing that without
empathy pain is inevitable.Odysseus first displays a great lack of empathy for the cyclopswhen
comparing how different his lifestyle is to Polyphemus . For example when describing how the
Polyphemus lives he says in disgust, He was quite unlike any man who eats bread, more like
some wooded peak in the high hills, standing out alone apart from the others. (9.190 192) It is
apparent from this quote that Odysseus does not respect those who work on their own. He thinks
that Polyphemus is uncivilized and a lesser being just because his lifestyle is different from that
of Odysseus . In addition Odysseus distances himself from the cyclops by comparing their size,

The song of songs it is a well known but not so well understood book of the Bible, it s 8 chapters
of love poetry and while there are an introduction and a conclusion, the book doesn t have any
kind of rigid literary design and that s because it is a collection of poems. They are not meant to
be dissected or taken apart. They are meant to be read as a flowing whole and simply enjoyed.
The first line of the book tells us that it is the song of songs which is a Hebrew idiom like, the
holy of holies or the king of kings it is a Hebrew way of saying, the greatest thing, this is the
greatest song of all songs. We are told in the first line that this song of songs is of Solomon,
which could mean that he is the author, his name does begin the book after all. But as I read the
poems, I discover that the main voice of a woman, called the beloved. And while there is also a

but he s never a speaker, and you do have to admit Solomon is a very strange candidate as the

intubated with an endotracheal tube (ETT) is at increased risk of developing pneumonia. The
bacteria colonizing the oropharynx can move into the lower respiratory tract because the ETT
provides a direct route into the lower airway (Craven Hjalmarson, 2010). This type of pneumonia
is called ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), it occurs in patients receiving mechanical
ventilation for an extended period of time. Ventilator associated pneumonia can be categorized as
either early onset or late onset. Early onset VAP occurs between 48 to 96 hours and is usually
caused by Haemophilus influenza, an antibiotic sensitive community acquired organisms (Collard
