Simple epithelial tissue lines body surfaces and cavities. It is classified based on cell shape and number of cell layers. Simple epithelia contain one cell layer and include squamous, cuboidal, and columnar cells. Squamous epithelium is thin and flat. Cuboidal epithelium has cells with equal height, width and a spherical nucleus. Columnar epithelium has tall cells. Pseudostratified epithelium lines areas like the trachea and has a mix of cell heights but only one layer. Epithelial tissues function to protect, transport, secrete, absorb, and detect sensations.
