- Environmental studies is a multidisciplinary subject that investigates our environment through empirical science. It identifies hazardous conditions and issues warnings to promote sustainable development without environmental degradation.
- Global environmental issues like climate change have local impacts through increased natural disasters, shifts in habitats and species, and effects on water resources and disease. In Kerala, issues include pollution, droughts, floods, landslides, and loss of wetlands affecting groundwater.
- Youth can play an important role in conservation through local involvement in maintaining parks and public spaces, following the 3R principles of reduce, reuse and recycle, advocating for eco-friendly schools and lifestyles, and identifying local environmental problems and solutions.

UNDERSTANDING WHAT GREEN WASHING IS!.pdfJulietMogola
Many companies today use green washing to lure the public into thinking they are conserving the environment but in real sense they are doing more harm. There have been such several cases from very big companies here in Kenya and also globally. This ranges from various sectors from manufacturing and goes to consumer products. Educating people on greenwashing will enable people to make better choices based on their analysis and not on what they see on marketing sites.

"Understanding the Carbon Cycle: Processes, Human Impacts, and Strategies for...MMariSelvam4
The carbon cycle is a critical component of Earth's environmental system, governing the movement and transformation of carbon through various reservoirs, including the atmosphere, oceans, soil, and living organisms. This complex cycle involves several key processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and carbon sequestration, each contributing to the regulation of carbon levels on the planet.
Human activities, particularly fossil fuel combustion and deforestation, have significantly altered the natural carbon cycle, leading to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and driving climate change. Understanding the intricacies of the carbon cycle is essential for assessing the impacts of these changes and developing effective mitigation strategies.
By studying the carbon cycle, scientists can identify carbon sources and sinks, measure carbon fluxes, and predict future trends. This knowledge is crucial for crafting policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, enhancing carbon storage, and promoting sustainable practices. The carbon cycle's interplay with climate systems, ecosystems, and human activities underscores its importance in maintaining a stable and healthy planet.
In-depth exploration of the carbon cycle reveals the delicate balance required to sustain life and the urgent need to address anthropogenic influences. Through research, education, and policy, we can work towards restoring equilibrium in the carbon cycle and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
Characterization and the Kinetics of drying at the drying oven and with micro...Open Access Research Paper
The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.
2. Chapter One
Environmental studies: A
Multidisciplinary Subject
• Earth was formed 4.5 billion years ago, life is
approx. 3.5 billion years old.
• Encountered Big five mass extinctions-
scientists warn us of a sixth total annihilation
of life on earth. We should STOP
unsustainable ways of exploitation of the
earth’s natural resources.
3. • Significance of Environmental Studies
What is Environmental Studies?
The science that investigates and creates awareness of our
environment in an empirical manner. Scientists identify
hazardous conditions and issue timely warning.
Definitions
*Environmental Protection Act, 1986-”environment includes
water, air and land and the inter-relationship which exists
among and between water, air and land and human beings…”
What is a Pollutant?
“any solid, liquid or gaseous substance present in any
concentration as may be or tend to be injurious to
environment”.
4. FOUR Units of the Environment
• Biotic resources- all living organisms, food and
interaction.
• Geophysical and abiotic resources- Sunlight,
soil, air, water and climate.
• Ecosystem – harmonious coexistence of biotic
and abiotic
• Natural phenomena in cycles –eg: earth
quake, volcanic eruptions.
7. The Need for Environmental Studies
• Environment is everything that we are directly
or indirectly dependent on for our survival,
includes both biotic and the abiotic.
• Our unsustainable development has lead to
depletion of natural resources.
• EVS comprises E sciences, E engineering and E
management.
• In depth study of the environmental issues is
crucial for development without degradation.
8. EVS is a multidisciplinary subject,
Why?
• The study of natural ecosystems and the
interrelationships between biotic and abiotic
demand expertise from different fields.
• understanding this ‘complex’
interrelationships is integral to EVS. It
incorporates branches of biology, the social
sciences, and engineering; the knowledge
base for a healthy planet requires the
interaction of multidisciplinary studies.
9. How do global environmental issues
affect us locally?
• Climate change is listed as the greatest humanitarian crisis of our
time.
• Human development activities have increased the production of
green house gases leading to global warming.
• Climate change leads to :-
*Sea-rise
*severe droughts and floods
*forest fires
*Coral reefs are lost
*Alters species- shift in habitat, change In lifecycles, development of
new physical traits.
*Affect water resources- Vector borne diseases. Eg:mosquitos
10. Environmental Issues in KERALA
• High density of population – 890/sq km—
324/sq km.
• Major environmental problems- pollution of
water bodies, droughts, floods, landslides,
conversion of wetlands into living spaces;(
affect ground water)
• Global climate change- salinity of wetlands
• High concentrations of fluoride- toxic, used in
pesticides (rats)
11. Dichotomy between Environment and
Development
• Environment and Development are interlinked.
Sustainable development: economic
development that is conducted without depletion
of natural resources. Development considering
the needs of the environment.
• Theme of world environment day 2015- “Seven
billion dreams, One planet, consume with care”.
• UN-2012 Rio de Janeiro –sustainable
development
12. How can we sensitize the public?
• Mass media- news papers, radio, tv etc and
virtual media can be used effectively.
• UN secretary- general Ban Ki Moon’s
definition.
• World Environment day- June 5- “Beat Plastic
Pollution” 2018
• Government organizations and
environmentalists work together
• Environmental clubs initiate activities
13. The Role of youth in the conservation
of the Environment
• Involvement in conservation at local level-
maintaining parks, water bodies, streets etc
• Principle-3 R’s- Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
• not in my Backyard syndrome (NIMBY) : large
scale power stations that affect the quality of life.
• Schools and Colleges eco-friendly
• Methods to conserve non-renewable energy
eg: coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
17. Why would EVS should be included in
the syllabus?
• Motivate youth to have active participation in
Environmental issues.
• Identify problems locally and find solutions.
• Inspire successive generations to have
sustainable ways of living.
