Genetic Modified Humans: Is Not Acceptable In the essay, titled "Building Baby from the Genes
Up?" Ronald M. Green proclaims his approval of genetic selection and extraction of human genes.
He gives reasons that support his outlook on the matter, that this will be useful to civilization.
Ronald M. Green is in violation of several ethical codes, with his view on genetic modification. I am
against genetically modified humans, and I will explain to you, why this is my stance on the subject.
First, I will summarize exactly what Ronald M. Green says in his article about his view on genetic
modification and why practicing it is vital. Second, I will describe research ... Show more content on

But genetics could also become a tool for reducing the class divide" (517). The issue with this is if
we can manipulate genes to make them better, or even get rid of diseases as Green argues, then
surely we would want we have paid for. When a parent can alter their child's abilities and life for the
better, they have control over what they want in a child. Examples of this would be to make a child
not obese because the parents have the obesity gene. This is what critics mean to Green and genetic
manipulation, when a person has control over the production of another they are "playing God." In
Designer People, Sally Deneen, exclaims, " It will start innocently enough: Birth defects that are
caused by a single gene, such as cystic fibrosis and Tay–Sachs disease, will be targeted first, and
probably with little controversy. Then, as societal fears about messing with Mother Nature subside,
Silver and other researchers predict that a genetic solution to preventing diabetes, heart disease and
other big killers will be found and offered". So will genetic inoculations against HIV. Eventually, the
mind will be targeted for improvement––preventing alcohol addiction and mental illness, and
enhancing visual acuity or intelligence to try to produce the next Vincent Van Gogh or Albert
Einstein. Even traits from other animals

South Vs West Conflict
1. Compare and contrast racial conflict in the South and the West. There were many eras throughout
history were racism was at an all–time high and those races that were a part of this discrimination
had no rights, were treated harsh, and really lived a miserable life. During the time after the Civil
War was over, the end of racism was supposed to be over as well. In the south, slavery should have
been abolished with the amendments that were set in place. The United States had expanded west
and many African Americans chose to live there instead of the South hoping for a new life. Despite
the many efforts to end racism, no matter what laws were set in place, racism was still taking place
in the south and west.
So many issues came about when trying to grant African Americans rights and citizenship. African
Americans felt that they deserved the rights to vote, to own land, be able to learn and get an
education, and also just to be truly treated just like everyone else. In the South, most whites had a
very hard time adjusting to blacks being freed so they came up with the Jim Crow Laws.
The Jim Crow laws kept the white and blacks segregated, keeping whites superior to others and
blacks rights very limited. "The Court ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

advertised it in Europe," (Edwards 485). Many of these newly freed slaves took this opportunity and
it gave them ways to make money and also, it was something that they could call their own. Along
with the blacks, Hispanics also settled in the west later to become farmhands who worked long and
hard throughout the day, but received very little pay. Life in the west was supposed to be way
different compared to the south, but still, no matter where they went, they still experienced some

The Transcontinental Railroad And The Railroad
The Transcontinental Railroad Amid the 1800's, America was experiencing a period of development
known as the Industrial Revolution. America was in its first century of being an autonomous and
creative nation. One of the greatest commitments to this huge innovative progression was the
foundation of the Transcontinental Railroad. The westward expansion designed to be the key to a
nation–building project and a change for the United States.[1] The Pacific Railroads cleared the path
in which built the remaining railroad tracks connecting the West to the Midwest and East. The
Union Pacific Company built from Omaha, Nebraska towards the west meeting up with the Central
Pacific Company who started building from Sacramento, California.[2] This ... Show more content

Once the Gold Rush fizzled out, there was no more work for the people who were trying to live the
way they expected to. In January of 1863, work finally started on the Central Pacific railroad line,
the individuals who have settled in the West now assembled the railways.
Nevertheless, the railways helped the United States financially and it represented the lift in global
and mainland exchange. The exchange of merchandise was presently less demanding and
substantially faster than the customary method for secured wagons. Merchandise brought into the
United States internationally on the West coast could get to the East Coast quicker and more
proficient. This preferred approach for transporting merchandise extended markets and took into
account less expensive conveyance, and expanded potential outcomes of new associates and ideas in
business. Thus, becoming an expedient and productive approach to transporting goods in the
economy. Socially, the Transcontinental Railroad enormously affected the United States. Once the
railroad completed in 1869, traveling anywhere was less demanding and more affordable. Before
finishing the railroad, going across country took half a year or longer, and cost around one thousand
dollars. After the completion of the railroad, traveling across the nation cost nearly one hundred and
fifty dollars and travel time was close to seven days.[4] Since there was

Brains before Beauty in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre Essay
Brains before Beauty in Jane Erye
Beauty is generally classified into two main categories: physical and mental. In the Charlotte
Bronte's Jane Erye, the protagonist rejects by choice and submission, her own physical beauty in
favor of her mental intelligence and humility, and her choice becomes her greatest benefit by
allowing her to win the hand of the man of her desires, a man who has the values Jane herself
believes in. She values her knowledge and thinking before any of her physical appearances because
of her desire as a child to read, the lessons she is taught and the reinforcements of the idea appearing
in her adulthood. During the course of the novel she lives at five homes. In each of these places, the
idea of inner ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jane Erye's next home emerges as the Lowood Institution where she spends six years of her life
learning to become intelligent and morally stringent, while remaining visibly plain. Her lesson of
physical and mental humility comes at the hands of Mr. Brocklehurst, the institution's main
benefactor. Upon seeing a girl with natural curls in her hair, he proclaims: "My mission is to mortify
in these girls the lusts of the flesh, to teach them to clothe themselves with shamefacedness and
sobriety" (pg. 96). Such a strong influence on Jane, at such an early age, greatly persuades her
opinion of her own physical image. She feels her status in life always remains as a humble and
inconspicuous servant with a sharp mind and strict morals. In spending six years of her most
impressionable years of her life at such a repressive institution, she learns a great deal of humility.
Lowood also teaches Jane a great deal by giving her one of the greatest benefits to her life: a good
education. Jane spends eight years of her life at Lowood where she, "had the means of an excellent
education placed within my reach; a fondness for some of my studies, and a desire to excel in all"
(pg. 115). Her education means more to her than her simple appearance. She had the option of just
sliding by in her studies and leaving Lowood as soon as possible. Instead, she remains in a school

In-Depth Look at Viaggio in Ponente written by Domenico...
An In–Depth Look at Viaggio in Ponente written by Domenico Laffi Many of the gaps in the
historical record of human civilization have been filled in by journals written by people about the
events surrounding them. Such journals give a unique view into the life of an everyday person even
in the most extreme of circumstances. An example of this is the log kept by Domenico Laffi, which
he wrote as a travel guide for other pilgrims in the seventeenth century. Among the common events
of river crossings and wells tucked away on high mountain peaks, Laffi writes a detailed description
of cities, holy rights and the scientific and technological works he encounters during his travels.
Laffi's record of his travels is very important to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Laffi often describes nights in overpriced, decrepit inns and taverns; "we lodged in a hovel–it was so
mean, you could not call it an inn. All we had to eat were a few chestnuts, with water to drink, and
we had to sleep on a great heap of dried leaves" (Hall 36). His education comes out in the way in
which he chooses to recount his experiences. Most guidebooks spend a lot of time describing the
ascetics of a place. Laffi skims over such descriptions and spends a greater amount of time in
describing buildings and cannons by means of measurements. Laffi measures everything and has
very accurate and scientific information throughout his travels. On good example of his accuracy is
his description of an archiepiscopal palace in Milan: "It [a palace in Milan] stands by itself and is in
the shape of a square, though not exactly so, since the principal faade, which faces east, and the
other that corresponds to it, are 210 braccia [1] wide, while the lateral ones are 180 br. The total
length all around is therefore 780 br." (Hall 21). Many people would not have taken the time to even
wonder at many of the measurements Laffi took. In this way Laffi gives his reader a very different
picture of many of the buildings etc which pilgrims typically recorded. Because so many other
authors have spent most of their time of descriptions of art and architecture as art, Laffi's work
becomes important in adding a more mathematical

Reflection Of The Camino
The Camino Day 1: We left the College on Saturday, the 6th of May. The flight departed at 11:45
and we didn't arrive at Biarritz until 2:50. Then we got a bus from the airport to St Jean Pied de Port,
a small village at the base of the Pyrenees Mountains. When we got to St Jean, I was taken aback by
the town. It was a mixture of old streets and building from centuries ago and modern roads and
shops. We had a mass in the local parish before we got to explore the town. It was late by then so
most of the shops were closed, but you still got a feel for the town as we strolled down the narrow
streets. A parade was commencing when we were wandering around that was celebrating the Basque
Region's heritage. They were dressed in their traditional clothes and were waving the Basque flag. I
didn't know about the Basque Region's fight for independence before then but Mr. Mccormack
explained it to me. To greatly simplify it, the citizens of the Basque Region believe they shouldn't be
members of France and Spain because they have their own traditions, customs and lifestyles that
oppose those of the French and Spanish. After exploring the town we returned to the hotel, reflected
on the day, ate dinner, and then went to bed. Day 2: The second day involved a lot more work than
the first. It was also the day we officially started the Camino. It was a bit different going from

Canterbury Tales Analysis
In Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, various people band together to go on a pilgrimage
from England to Canterbury. Their aim is to see a shrine of St Thomas Beckett, the revered
Archbishop of Canterbury who had reportedly healed others when they were ill. The pilgrims have a
variety of occupations and are divided fairly evenly amongst the three estates (clergy, nobility, and
commoners). The pilgrims who are members of the clergy are ironically depicted as the least moral,
compared to the nobility and the commoners, creating a negative view of those who are leaders in
the Church. The members of the clergy also spend their time wandering, metaphorically
demonstrating their purposelessness, while the pilgrimage itself is a direct ... Show more content on

However, he works hard, both for God and for his community, and he lives happily. The Plowman is
also one of the most pious pilgrims. According to Chaucer, "God loved he best with al his hoole
herte" (GP 533). He also gives money to the church, demonstrating both his religiousness and his
charitability, which is especially notable given his own poverty. In addition to the Plowman's
religiousness, he lives a simple life, evidenced by his wearing of a tabard (a simple sleeveless shirt
worn by the lower class) and the fact that he rides on a mare. Similarly to the Knight and the Squire,
the Plowman is the ideal member of his estate, the peasantry.
The Friar, Prioress, Monk, and Pardonner are the members of the clergy (the first estate) on the
pilgrimage. The most corrupt of these is the Friar. He has the power to give confession, and he gives
it easily, because those who have repented are more likely to give him donations. The Friar wanders
around and becomes wealthy because of these donations. Chaucer also says that the Friar knows all
of the barmaids in town, implying that he likely goes out drinking frequently, a habit that is not
Christian–like. The Prioress also doesn't exemplify an ideal religious leader. While at first, the
Prioress might appear kindhearted and moral, Chaucer adds in little descriptions to give the reader
an odd impression of her. She's so concerned with attempting to be upper class, demonstrated by her
knowledge

Pilgrimage And Place : An Old Testament View
In Gordan McConville's chapter "Pilgrimage and 'Place': an Old Testament View, he reinterprets the
meaning of pilgrimage in relation to the Old Testament. His consensus is the Christian theology
views the history of holy sites and its geography as a restriction in a journey toward God.
"Christians do not make hag to Jerusalem. There is no one holy place; God does not 'live' in
Jerusalem even in the story of the Old Testament was never final or definitive," (McConville, 26).
Having mass in our hostel room at A Paso de Formiga demonstrated McConville's perception of 'an
extension of holiness.' The worshipping of God in a hostel room felt just as gratifying as having
mass in a cathedral. This act clarified that the destination or place was a nonfactor in my journey
toward God. There was a trusted community in mass that evening, for we all were on experiencing
the same pilgrimage and searching for God's will. Now, I am not afraid to worship God during any
time or at any place.
Some of the pilgrims in class have asked me, why are you going on this pilgrimage? What does
Santiago mean to you? My immediate response was, "I am on this pilgrimage because I felt like
there is a better way to see. There is a better way to hear. My mind and heart has been clogged from
traumatizing circumstances. I just want to breathe and smell better." After I said that, I wondered
what my eye doctor would think if she knew I abandoned my bifocal glasses in the hopes that the

them. But my parents knew that by forcing me on this journey, I would truly grow in my faith and

were many complications. I had been dehydrated many times, and had to stop hiking for up to
several hours at a time. One unfortunate incident that happened to me was when I was hiking down
the road, and it put several complications in my travel plans. That day, I had been so focused on my
journey that I had not noticed I was coming up to a large rock pile. I tripped on this pile, and scraped
my knee and hurt my ankle quite severely. Upon my fall, two other pilgrims on the path stopped to
help me. Their names were John and Dorothy, and they were lovely people. They helped transport
me to the nearest albergue, where I had to to rest. I was so angry at myself for wasting a day of
travel, but they assured me that it was perfectly ok to take a day off because of medical
complications. They eventually continued on their way, and blessed me and my travels. But finally,
after thirty days, I saw two high structures in the distance that could only be the minarets of the

In "Letters of a Civil War Nurse", written in 1863, Cornelia Hancock's account of the Civil War
gives readers an account of the suffering and hardship of soldiers through the point of view of an
Union nurse. This document written by Cornelia Hancock is an account as a nurse who went
through the Battle of Gettysburg and the after effects. Through a series of letters written to her loved
ones, Cornelia wrote what nurses went through during the times of war. At the time women were
expected to be good wives; with Cornelia Hancock's effort she was able to help soldiers and
contribute to the idea that women are capable of much more than being good wives; women can be
apart of war. With her background as a Quaker and her family history, Cornelia Hancock was able to
contribute greatly to the war effort even though she was originally denied to becoming an union
nurse. Cornelia was born on February 8, 1840 outside of Salem, New Jersey. Her ancestors were
greatly involved in politics and religious activities. They were Quakers and sided with the Union,
which added to the reason that she joined the Union Army as a nurse. This allowed her to become
easily involved in a cause that she firmly believed in; she wanted to server her nation and got the
chance once the revolution started. Cornelia saw the opportunity with the Battle of Gettysburg to

Prayer At Sporting Events Essay
Prayer in Sporting Events
The Government is too preoccupied with pleasing a select few by removing prayer from sporting
events than they are with running the country. This is a problem that can be fixed and should be.
The reason for student led prayers at sporting events is for a God they believe in to grant the safety
of the players on the field and the fans going home. After all, Christians are in the majority. It's a
thirty second prayer that isn't going to hurt a single person. (Gholson) At Celina High School,

Worth, Texas. "Why God, why? Help me please!
What's wrong with the world today? That we can't pray at a football game, but cussing the ref. is
okay?"(Goodson) This country was founded by people who were tired of the way their government
was telling them how to worship God. And that is exactly what is happening now. Our government
doesn't want the atheists to get offended so they hurt the majority of the people by going against our
own God and telling us not to pray for the safety of some people. The Bible tells us to pray without
cease. And why should we stop? The prayer is even asking for the safety of the atheists. We don't
say the prayer, "Please God keep all the Christians safe from injury." We pray for the safety of
EVERYBODY.
If the government would be a little less involved in our religious beliefs or non–beliefs, we might
have a balanced budget or less of a debt. The constitution grants us the right to freedom of religion.
We're not asking that atheists be converted Christians. If they don't want to participate, they can go
to the bathroom or put on some headphones. As an ex–atheist and recently converted Christian, a
prayer never offended me. They shouldn't be offended either.

Literature Review On Tourism
This chapter presents the research findings and its relationship with the literature review topics
relevant to answer the research question. The findings show that CDS involves ET by having
explored the activities and experiences included in the four realms of the experience model. This
section will also discuss the motivations and interests of doing CDS as well as the relationship
between secular and spiritual visitors and their use of social media.
5.2 Discussion
This research reveals that Pine and Gilmore (1999) four realms of the experience provides relevant
measurement for the study of tourist experiences, in this case based on the route of CDS.It has been
found that tradition and memory are significant aspects for CDS visitors. Participant 3 emphasized
his interest on Spanish culture and visiting places with ancient traditions which coincide with
Murray and Graham (1997), who suggested that route tourism relates to cultural routes inspiring
memory and tradition. (Murray, 2014). Participant's opinions are in line with Zhang et al., (2007),
Frey (2004) and Percy (1998), regarding the pilgrimage purposes in search of socialising, fulfilment,
sport and faith and Kavoura (2012) regarding visitors' interests in history and architecture as
Facebook posts suggested about relevant architecture along the route.
The literature suggested that must be a differentiation between the secular and spiritual visitors of
pilgrimages, results are in line with Alvarez and Garcia (1999)

the US Naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, that would leave millions of Americans in shock, and

In 1940, the United States was extremely against this animosity and reacted with trade embargoes
and monetary approvals. FDR had talked with the Dutch and the British to see if they would agree
upon embargoes on Japan. Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not want a conflict in the pacific as the
United States was not prepared for war. For instance, the oil embargo that was organized between
the British, the Dutch, and the United States was about 90% of Japan's imported oil. [3] This upset
Japan because without oil or fuel their military and war efforts would come to a complete stop.
Beginning of the year in 1941, FDR decided that the Pacific Fleet would move to Hawaii from San
Diego in the hopes of discouraging the invasion of the Japanese. Negotiations between Washington
and Tokyo had been going on for several months without a resolution. On July 2, 1941, the Imperial
High Command was tired of negotiations with the United States and needed to proceed with their
development within Asia even with the embargo in place and meaning it would be at a high risk of
war with the US. [4] Therefore, the Japanese had deceived the United States, ignored the arbitration,
and moved forward with their plans. The United States had hoped that this restrictive embargo
would halt Japan's assault as negotiations had continued well into November.

Art And Its Impact On The World
What was interesting about this specific chapter was that normally the type of art is connected to the
specific area where the art was created. Romanesque art however is not specifically connect to any
one area. Although it was first noticed in Europe, this style of art was seen in many different places,
using many different references, and techniques of past works, and cultures. When the trade routes
were reopened in Europe the economy of the surrounding areas flourished, which helped the spread
of art in general. This mixed with the turn of year one–thousand, during which the apocalypse did
not happen helped the Christianity movement jump leaps and bounds across the continent. Within
the Bible it is stated that one–thousand years after the death of Jesus christ he would return to judge
the souls of the living and the dead. When that did not happen in the general population boomed and
the overall spirituality of the Christian believers grew even larger. Thus began the social and
spiritual tradition of the Pilgrimages. When someone chooses to become a pilgrim, they lose their
social standing and become something all their own. People from all walks of life would feel free to
talk and converse with anyone who is on a Pilgrimage. It is interesting to note that even though
these journeys were very popular around this time, they were invented somewhere around the fourth
century. To understand the art of the time one must understand the circumstances and reasons behind

Did Milo want a life of subservient husbandry like his father and generations of Guillets? His father
would leave him with no significant inheritance, even though he was the eldest boy. His lack of
secondary schooling and his French Catholic ancestry, despite being only partial, placed him on the
wrong side of the two solitudes to improve his life. To be a landowner meant independence. His
childhood, not only marred by poverty but also by the traumatic series of deaths of those so close to
him, conceivably placed a pall over his future – that 's if he did not do something radical. (There is
an unsubstantiated rumour that he "had a falling out" with his family, possibly from his second step–
mother, and not his father as Milo honoured his father by naming a son after him.) For whatever
reason, and it seems he had a few, Milo left Quebec likely either in the fall of 1881 or spring of 1882

Voting For African Americans
Ray, In order to prevent African Americans from voting, white's enacted a variety of different
measures used for preventing black voting. Of these measures three big ones were the use of
violence, all white–primary elections, and the grandfather clause. For whites violence was a means
in which they could forcibly prevent African Americans from voting in town elections. Many times
blacks that tried to vote, received some kind of violent backlash, whether it was getting beat or
losing their jobs. In 1898, Democrats from Grimes County, following their loss organized a secret

Pocahontas And Real Life
Many people believe the 1995 film, Pocahontas, to be the true story of a young Powhatan woman.
However, the story lacks facts. Pocahontas isn't even her real name. Matoaka, the real Pocahontas,
faced mush more misery than the movie showed. Mataoka's life in America, life in England, a
comparison between the movie and real life, and how fictional portrayals of real people effect
society today will show you that Disney's inaccuracies could change history. In her early life,
Matoaka was a Powhatan Indian. She was born around 1595. 12 years later, John Smith arrived on

are not so positive. The movie would have still been great, even if names where changed, but would

story of Pocahontas. A Powhatan Chief, Roy Crazy Horse, stated "It is unfortunate that this sad

creators of the movie may have thought that it would be harmless, people could still find offense to

into something fluffy and "empowering" is just uncomfortable" and if the real history was ever

your Personal Legend?
Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist focused on the concatenation of a boy's journey in life that began as
an unfinished dream which led shepherd Santiago, the boy, to his own Personal Legend. However in
the first part of the story, it somehow did not correlate with the novel's title. For it was only focused
on the boys travel together with his flock of sheep. But then on the latter part of the novel, the
essence of the title was revealed, for it introduced an important character in the novel who is the
Alchemist.
Aside from the title the author also used several instruments to abdicate the boy's personal legend.
And the most important instrument that he used is the boy's dream. The boy's dream inside an
abandoned church where there was an enormous sycamore that grew where the sacristy was. The
boy's revelation of his dream to the interpreter goes like this: "I had the same dream twice; I was in
the field with my sheep, when a child appeared and began to play with the animals. I don't like
people to do that, because the sheep are afraid of strangers. But children always seem to be able to
play without frightening them. The child continued to play with my sheep for quite a while and
suddenly the child

Paulo Coelho's 'The Alchemist'
The Author and His/Her Times Paulo Coelho was born on August 24, 1947 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
When he was a boy, he was expected to become an engineer like his father. However, Paulo wanted
to be a writer and rebelled against his parents. This made his parents transport him to a mental
asylum. When Paulo was released, he was accepted into law school in 1970. Unfortunately, he
dropped out of law school to explore South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe. The next
years were spent living as a hippie and engaging in drugs. Then, his dream of writing was returned
after he visited Spain at the age of 36. Paulo walked more 500 miles along a road known as "The
Road to Santiago de Compostela". In addition, the road was a site of Catholic ... Show more content

However, the only time the word "Santiago" is mentioned is in the first sentence of the book: "The
boy's name was Santiago". Instead, Paulo Coelho refers to Santiago as "the boy". Unfortunately, the
author offers no description of appearance of Santiago. But the author does reveal that Santiago is a
shepherd. One could know that Santiago enjoys to travel all over the world. This is why he is
shepherd. One could know this by reading the following context from the book: " 'The people who
come [to this village] have a lot of money to spend, so they can afford to travel,' his father said.
'Amongst us, the only ones who travel are the shepherds.' 'Well, then I'll be a shepherd!' [the boy
said]' ". This shows that the boy wanted to be a shepherd because of his dream of wanting to travel.
As previously explained, the boy can represent anybody in this novel. He represents somebody who
can travel all over to different places, meet new people, encounter obstacles through life, and learn
new concepts of life. Another character is the alchemist, whom the author does not give a name at
all. He is described as a horseman, on a white horse, who wears a turban and a black kerchief
covering his whole face, except for his eyes. In addition, he possesses a rare stone known as the
Philosopher's Stone, which is something that can transform any metal into pure gold, and the Elixir
of Life, which is a liquid that can cure

A Discussion Of Chaucer 's ' The Trustful Three '
The Trustful Three
(A Discussion of Chaucer 's Added Characters )
"As I make my slow pilgrimage through the world, a certain sense of beautiful mystery seems to
gather and grow, " A.C. Benson. In the Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer speaks of a pilgrimage,
or religion journey, and the many people who go with him. The tales are made up of each persons
story that they tell along the way. Each of these characters adds to his great story told by Chaucer,
however, the question is posed, who could he had from this century that would influence this
pilgrimage? There are many types of people who could be added as characters to Chaucer 's story,
however there are three that stick out in my mind that would make quite a difference. Three types of
people that Chaucer could add from our time would be an inspiration speaker, a comedian and lastly
a musician to create a change, one that was good, for the journey.
The first pilgrim Chaucer might think to add to his group is an inspiration speaker. These types of
people have a way with words, they get you to look at things in a new perspective. If an
inspirational speaker were to go on the long trek, they may have been able to make the others who
were quite sinful with their actions think twine not only about themselves, but the actions that they
took. Many of these people lived very hypocritical lives, the inspirational speaker may have been a
big help in making them change their naughty sinful ways. During that time an

The Life of Paulo Coelho
Paulo Coelho is a famous author that has written many popular works in these past few decades. He
is most notably known for The Alchemist, which was written in 1988. The Alchemist was "one of
the greatest best–sellers of all times" (Kaaki). During his lifetime, Coelho went through many
obstacles; the most notable event was getting an electrical shock when he was in a mental institution
and getting placed into prison. He was able to move past all of these difficulties and became a well–
known author praised for his artistic creativity. Paulo Coelho's life began on August 1947 in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. The website, Famous Author, stated that when Coelho was young, he "expressed a
longing to become a writer" (Famous Authors). His parents were firmly against his desire to become
a writer because they did not see a career as a writer. They went as far as placing him into a mental
institution around the age eighteen three times. He even had to endure electrical shocks when he was
in the mental institution. The reason why his parents placed him into a mental institution was
because they wanted Coelho to have a practical job and realize that his dream will only stay a
dream. From the website, the Famous Authors it states that, "his mother was of the opinion that
Coelho should...pursue along the lines of his father, who was an engineer". This reveals that his
parents' had an intense opposition of his career choice as a writer because they did not see the

The Importance of the Transcontinental Railroad Beginning in the late 1860's America began to
expand rapidly. With the completion of the transcontinental railroad a journey that once would take
months would now take a mere week to complete (Henretta, Edwards, Self, 476). America as we
know it began to take place. In the early 1860's major cities in the Eastern portion of the United
States began to grow larger. Increasing numbers in railroads made interconnecting the country much
easier and allowed for expansion to happen quickly. By the 1890's the United States had expanded

Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not want a conflict in the pacific as the United States was not
prepared for war. For instance, the oil embargo that was organized between the British, the Dutch,
and the United States was about 90% of Japan's imported oil. [3] This upset Japan because without
oil or fuel their military and war efforts would come to a complete stop. Beginning of the year in
1941, FDR decided that the Pacific Fleet would move to Hawaii from San Diego in the hopes of
discouraging the invasion of the Japanese. Negotiations between Washington and Tokyo had been
going on for several months without a resolution. On July 2, 1941, the Imperial High Command was
tired of negotiations with the United States and needed to proceed with their development within
Asia even with the embargo in place and meaning it would be at a high risk of war with the US. [4]
Therefore, the Japanese had deceived the United States, ignored the arbitration, and moved forward
with their plans. The United States had hoped that this restrictive embargo would halt Japan's assault
as negotiations had continued well into November. Instead of giving in to the United States
demands, the Japanese had decided to finally put their surprise battle strategy in place and strike the
United States with full force. Admiral Yamamoto placed a heavy emphasis for one quick action on

Persuasive Essay On Gun Control
Guns are a controversial topic in America right now, and there are many different opinions about
them. We see political parties argue about them all the time and we see that they have affected
people in good and bad ways.
Guns are somewhat exalted in America because of our "right to bear arms". The Second
Amendment is definitely one of the most well–known rights, but how useful is it to us today?
Does this amendment still apply to the everyday life of an American citizen, and does help us at all?
The Second Amendment says "A well–regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.". United States has this
amendment for a very specific reason; we wrote it in case a tyranny rose up in our government and
we needed to rebel. During the time that this amendment was brewing the
British government tried to confiscate the colonist's guns and weapons. This caused the founding
fathers to create this amendment when they wrote the Constitution. They knew that a tyranny was a
possibility in the new country so they took action by giving rights to protect themselves. Over the
course of time the intentions of guns have changed and lately we haven't had to worry about tyrants.
Guns are most commonly used for protection and hunting in the
U.S. by citizens. As of 2013, 60% of gun owners said they have a gun for protection and 36% use it
for hunting. Yet it seems that all the amount of protection we have doesn't work with all the
shootings and gun violence we have.
A majority of people will agree that U.S. has a problem with gun violence and mass shootings, but
are guns the real problem? We have seen mass murders with guns a lot within the 21 st Century, and
they seem to get worse as we go on. We have seen the effects of
Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Las Vegas; all were mass shootings that took the lives of innocent kids
and adults. There are many others such as the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, but
what do these show about guns? It showed us that we may not have enough gun control laws, so we
pushed for more laws. Yet we still see gun violence all over America, and it seems to get worse
every time. When gun control laws were

American leader who died the same year and who promoted that African Americans separate from

Prostitution In The Roman Empire: An Analysis
This section will be a review of the current conversation taking place on the topic of prostitution pre
and post Christian church in the Roman Empire. While there are several scholars discussing pre
Christian church like Rebecca Flemming and Robert Knapp and a few like Thomas A.J. McGinn,
Vern L. Bullough, and James A. Brundage who are discussing post Christian church none are
documenting the evolution in perception, law, and sexuality concerning the prostitutes at the time of
the transition from paganism to Christianity. It is important to note on the specific conversation
about the church that there are two different views of the influence of the Christian Church that
exist. One in which the people wander aimlessly without it and another where it comes in as a
destructive and ugly dictator to control the society. This is where Rodoifo Lanciani, Vern L.
Bullough, and Thomas A.J. McGinn argue against Peter Brown. In Lanciani's book Pagan and
Christian Rome, he analyzes the changeover from paganism to Christianity and how it took 300
years of fighting to fully gain acceptance under Constantine in 323 and even then the people fought
back. He also takes a look at how Christianity moved through the society and it is not as one would
think. On page two Lanciani states, "It has been contended and many still believe that in ancient

The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho "On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid
in doing this assignment"
1."It is who I dared to do so." said the boy. He was reminded of the image of Santiago Matamoros
mounted on his white horse, with the infidels beneath his hooves. Point Of View, pg 73. "The
Alchemist" is told in the third point of view, meaning that the narrator is not necessarily a character
in the story. Therefore, the reader does not know how Santiago truly feels or thinks because he is not
the one telling the story. The narrator writes how he acted and what he did, but we could not imagine
how he truly felt.
In "The Alchemist", the point of view is not Santiago himself because the author wants the readers
to have their own perspective in the story.
2."...everyone in the market fell to their knees, touched their foreheads to the ground, and took up a
chant. Then, like a colony of worker ants, they dismantled their stalls and left.
Simile,pg 38. This story uses many similes and comparisons in it, like this one. A simile is a
comparison between two things, using the words "like and as." This example, In particular, uses a
group of people and a colony of ants. The author used this comparison because everyone was in
sync with how they moved and acted.
" " And this is my interpretation: you must go to the Pyramids in Egypt.
I have never heard of them, but, if it was a child who showed them to you, they exist. There you will
find a treasure that will make you a rich man.

I have never heard of them, but, if it was a child who showed them to you, they exist. There you will
find a treasure that will make you a rich man."
Foreshadowing,pg 14. The author uses this as a form of captivating the audience's attention through
the use of the supernatural, but he did not give away the entirety of the plot, and therefore it is not a
legit phrase in the story to give away the ending. Foreshadowing can be used to make the readers
assume a different conclusion by leaving temptation about a plot. a literary device in which a writer

The Miracles Of St. James
There were also stories about St. James ' retaliations against non–believers who questioned his
power. Constable translates a story about Saracens who took over Compostela, and "by divine
retribution, some of them were afflicted by looseness of the bowels, and shot whatever they had in
their bellies out through their back passages. Others lost the sight of their eyes and wandered blindly
about the church and the city." This account demonstrates what could happen if one did not show
proper respect towards St. James. This served as a warning to whoever had evil intents towards the
cathedral. Later in the story, Al–Mansur claims that if St. James restores him to his "earlier state of
health" then he would renounce "Muhammad and will not come again to the land of great St. James
bent on taking booty." The story has evolved into a conversion story. This showcases the power of
Roman Catholic saints against non–believers, and how saintly actions can so powerfully affect
individuals. Like the previous stories about the miracles of St. James, this would have been written
for a Christian audience, as it has such a negative attitude towards the Saracens. Constable also
translated a part from the Guide du Pelerin where "two penniless pilgrims returning from
Compostela tried a whole street of houses before they were finally offered lodging. During the night
all the houses in that street were burned down, apart from the one in which the pilgrims had spent
the night." This story

Analyzing A Pilgrim
For adherents of the Catholic and Islam faith pilgrimages are spiritual, life–changing journeys in

Chaucer's The General Prologue Essay
Chaucer's The General Prologue Chaucer–the pilgrim starts out "The General Prologue" with
detailed descriptions of each pilgrim as he views them. When Chaucer–the pilgrim arrives at the
Pardoner, he becomes very focused on his physical appearance and what is seems to be missing.
There is something odd about this Pardoner and Chaucer–the pilgrim can't seem to grasp just what
that is. He describes that the Pardoner is all on fire to do is job, just arriving from Rome (Bretful of

his physical appearance in any respect. Chaucer–the pilgrim describes his voice as that of a high–

Putting together his femininely smooth, boyish appearance with the neutered animal pushes the
emphasis on the Pardoner's ambiguous sexuality. This description of the Pardoner through Chaucer–
the pilgrim's eyes reaffirms the other pilgrims' idea of him. His character is that of a gentle yet
pompous boy, who spends much time on his own appearance, especially his hair. The Pardoner
seems to attempt to market himself as a young bachelor in front of his fellow travelers but the
attempt fails miserably. When he interrupts the Wife of Bath's prologue to say, "I'm getting married
soon, tell me what to do to find a good wife," he further alienates himself from the group instead of
redeeming himself as a funny person. His interruption comes off more as a need for others to see
him as desirable by a female. Another odd quality of his character is his confession of his own
sinfulness. The Pardoner commits this grievous rhetorical fault in trying to gain their pride. The
other characters don't need to announce, "These are my sins," because we find out through their
story what that character is like. However, the Pardoner has to announce his sins in hope of finding a
connection with the other pilgrims, for his story does not explain his character at all. In fact, it
revolts his fellow travelers because the

Winthrop was a well educated man who became the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
John Winthrop was a visionary utopian who saw fault in the English religious society. Winthrop
called England, "Morally corrupt and over burdened with people," however; Winthrop sought new
land for his children and Christian followers. In 1630 John Winthrop began his "exodus with 900

Also, magistrates, and ministers helped develop the blueprint of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
John Winthrop's overall goal was to help colonist work together for the greater good of the whole

John Winthrop's Sermon Upon reaching the new land, serious issues regarding community

August 5, 2015 Prior to the 1830s most antislavery activists focused on gradual emancipation. Most
of these activists were Southern whites, who thought that it would progressively wither away. Only
black abolitionists demanded an immediate end to slavery. The abolitionist movement called for the
end of slavery and had existed in one form or another since colonial times; the early case had been
stated most consistently by the Quakers. Most Northern states abolished slavery after the War for

Although historians disagree on its political impact, abolitionism unquestionably helped define
slavery as a pressing moral problem (Sellman). Abolitionists played a key role in setting the terms of
the debate over slavery and in making it a convincing moral issue, still they had remarkably little
influence in the North. Very few Northerners were abolitionists, and many regarded abolitionists as
dangerous radicals. What made their case telling was the South's violent reaction. Extreme Southern
responses appeared to confirm abolitionist warnings about a conspiratorial "Slave Power." (Larkin)

Elizabeth I, Monarch Of England, And Marie De L '...
Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l'Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and
other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth's role as a queen came at
a time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie's role as a missionary in New
France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of
these writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial
task of ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both
writers utilize religion to accomplish their various duties.
Marie utilized her understanding of religion and the Native's understanding of religion to build a
relationship built on trust. She arrived in modern day Quebec in the late 1630's as a missionary from
her country to educate and civilize the Natives there to match European traditions. Marie found
similarities with the indigenous people as even though they didn't have a God, they had their own
forms of worship. In Letter 65 to her son, she answers his questions regarding the "Savages'" beliefs
on divinity. "Certain ones adored the sun and offered its sacrifices. Others had recourse to certain
spirits who they said provided over the woods but all obeyed their dreams as a divinity" (Marie,

student. As my first student, On had a tremendous role in shaping what I expect from students and
how I see the professor–student relationship. In addition to being exceptionally smart, On has an
amazing set of skills, and what he does not know he is able to learn within a day or two. It is always
exciting to work and spend time with him. On is currently a professor at the University of California
at San Diego. Marco Bertini When I first met Marco, he was a PhD student at Harvard Business

English 112 Essay

  • 1. English 112 Essay Danielle Joseph English 112/ 0002 Maginnes February 26, 2013 Genetic Modified Humans: Is Not Acceptable In the essay, titled "Building Baby from the Genes Up?" Ronald M. Green proclaims his approval of genetic selection and extraction of human genes. He gives reasons that support his outlook on the matter, that this will be useful to civilization. Ronald M. Green is in violation of several ethical codes, with his view on genetic modification. I am against genetically modified humans, and I will explain to you, why this is my stance on the subject. First, I will summarize exactly what Ronald M. Green says in his article about his view on genetic modification and why practicing it is vital. Second, I will describe research ... The issue with this is if we can manipulate genes to make them better, or even get rid of diseases as Green argues, then surely we would want we have paid for. When a parent can alter their child's abilities and life for the better, they have control over what they want in a child. Examples of this would be to make a child not obese because the parents have the obesity gene. This is what critics mean to Green and genetic manipulation, when a person has control over the production of another they are "playing God." In Designer People, Sally Deneen, exclaims, " It will start innocently enough: Birth defects that are caused by a single gene, such as cystic fibrosis and Tay–Sachs disease, will be targeted first, and probably with little controversy. Then, as societal fears about messing with Mother Nature subside, Silver and other researchers predict that a genetic solution to preventing diabetes, heart disease and other big killers will be found and offered". So will genetic inoculations against HIV. Eventually, the mind will be targeted for improvement––preventing alcohol addiction and mental illness, and enhancing visual acuity or intelligence to try to produce the next Vincent Van Gogh or Albert Einstein. • 3. South Vs West Conflict 1. Compare and contrast racial conflict in the South and the West. There were many eras throughout history were racism was at an all–time high and those races that were a part of this discrimination had no rights, were treated harsh, and really lived a miserable life. During the time after the Civil War was over, the end of racism was supposed to be over as well. In the south, slavery should have been abolished with the amendments that were set in place. The United States had expanded west and many African Americans chose to live there instead of the South hoping for a new life. Despite the many efforts to end racism, no matter what laws were set in place, racism was still taking place in the south and west. So many issues came about when trying to grant African Americans rights and citizenship. African Americans felt that they deserved the rights to vote, to own land, be able to learn and get an education, and also just to be truly treated just like everyone else. In the South, most whites had a very hard time adjusting to blacks being freed so they came up with the Jim Crow Laws. The Jim Crow laws kept the white and blacks segregated, keeping whites superior to others and blacks rights very limited. "The Court ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Lincoln administration officials not only promoted the Homestead Act in America but also advertised it in Europe," (Edwards 485). Many of these newly freed slaves took this opportunity and it gave them ways to make money and also, it was something that they could call their own. Along with the blacks, Hispanics also settled in the west later to become farmhands who worked long and hard throughout the day, but received very little pay. Life in the west was supposed to be way different compared to the south, but still, no matter where they went, they still experienced some forms of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Transcontinental Railroad And The Railroad The Transcontinental Railroad Amid the 1800's, America was experiencing a period of development known as the Industrial Revolution. America was in its first century of being an autonomous and creative nation. One of the greatest commitments to this huge innovative progression was the foundation of the Transcontinental Railroad. The westward expansion designed to be the key to a nation–building project and a change for the United States.[1] The Pacific Railroads cleared the path in which built the remaining railroad tracks connecting the West to the Midwest and East. The Union Pacific Company built from Omaha, Nebraska towards the west meeting up with the Central Pacific Company who started building from Sacramento, California.[2] This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the Gold Rush fizzled out, there was no more work for the people who were trying to live the way they expected to. In January of 1863, work finally started on the Central Pacific railroad line, the individuals who have settled in the West now assembled the railways. Nevertheless, the railways helped the United States financially and it represented the lift in global and mainland exchange. The exchange of merchandise was presently less demanding and substantially faster than the customary method for secured wagons. Merchandise brought into the United States internationally on the West coast could get to the East Coast quicker and more proficient. This preferred approach for transporting merchandise extended markets and took into account less expensive conveyance, and expanded potential outcomes of new associates and ideas in business. Thus, becoming an expedient and productive approach to transporting goods in the economy. Socially, the Transcontinental Railroad enormously affected the United States. Once the railroad completed in 1869, traveling anywhere was less demanding and more affordable. Before finishing the railroad, going across country took half a year or longer, and cost around one thousand dollars. After the completion of the railroad, traveling across the nation cost nearly one hundred and fifty dollars and travel time was close to seven days.[4] Since there was ... In the Charlotte Bronte's Jane Erye, the protagonist rejects by choice and submission, her own physical beauty in favor of her mental intelligence and humility, and her choice becomes her greatest benefit by allowing her to win the hand of the man of her desires, a man who has the values Jane herself believes in. She values her knowledge and thinking before any of her physical appearances because of her desire as a child to read, the lessons she is taught and the reinforcements of the idea appearing in her adulthood. During the course of the novel she lives at five homes. In each of these places, the idea of inner ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jane Erye's next home emerges as the Lowood Institution where she spends six years of her life learning to become intelligent and morally stringent, while remaining visibly plain. Her lesson of physical and mental humility comes at the hands of Mr. Brocklehurst, the institution's main benefactor. Upon seeing a girl with natural curls in her hair, he proclaims: "My mission is to mortify in these girls the lusts of the flesh, to teach them to clothe themselves with shamefacedness and sobriety" (pg. 96). Such a strong influence on Jane, at such an early age, greatly persuades her opinion of her own physical image. She feels her status in life always remains as a humble and inconspicuous servant with a sharp mind and strict morals. In spending six years of her most impressionable years of her life at such a repressive institution, she learns a great deal of humility. Lowood also teaches Jane a great deal by giving her one of the greatest benefits to her life: a good education. Jane spends eight years of her life at Lowood where she, "had the means of an excellent education placed within my reach; a fondness for some of my studies, and a desire to excel in all" (pg. 115). Her education means more to her than her simple appearance. She had the option of just sliding by in her studies and leaving Lowood as soon as possible. Instead, she remains in a school ... • 9. In-Depth Look at Viaggio in Ponente written by Domenico... An In–Depth Look at Viaggio in Ponente written by Domenico Laffi Many of the gaps in the historical record of human civilization have been filled in by journals written by people about the events surrounding them. Such journals give a unique view into the life of an everyday person even in the most extreme of circumstances. An example of this is the log kept by Domenico Laffi, which he wrote as a travel guide for other pilgrims in the seventeenth century. Among the common events of river crossings and wells tucked away on high mountain peaks, Laffi writes a detailed description of cities, holy rights and the scientific and technological works he encounters during his travels. Laffi's record of his travels is very important to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Laffi often describes nights in overpriced, decrepit inns and taverns; "we lodged in a hovel–it was so mean, you could not call it an inn. All we had to eat were a few chestnuts, with water to drink, and we had to sleep on a great heap of dried leaves" (Hall 36). His education comes out in the way in which he chooses to recount his experiences. Most guidebooks spend a lot of time describing the ascetics of a place. Laffi skims over such descriptions and spends a greater amount of time in describing buildings and cannons by means of measurements. Laffi measures everything and has very accurate and scientific information throughout his travels. On good example of his accuracy is his description of an archiepiscopal palace in Milan: "It [a palace in Milan] stands by itself and is in the shape of a square, though not exactly so, since the principal faade, which faces east, and the other that corresponds to it, are 210 braccia [1] wide, while the lateral ones are 180 br. The total length all around is therefore 780 br." (Hall 21). Many people would not have taken the time to even wonder at many of the measurements Laffi took. In this way Laffi gives his reader a very different picture of many of the buildings etc which pilgrims typically recorded. Because so many other authors have spent most of their time of descriptions of art and architecture as art, Laffi's work becomes important in adding a more mathematical ... Then we got a bus from the airport to St Jean Pied de Port, a small village at the base of the Pyrenees Mountains. When we got to St Jean, I was taken aback by the town. It was a mixture of old streets and building from centuries ago and modern roads and shops. We had a mass in the local parish before we got to explore the town. It was late by then so most of the shops were closed, but you still got a feel for the town as we strolled down the narrow streets. A parade was commencing when we were wandering around that was celebrating the Basque Region's heritage. They were dressed in their traditional clothes and were waving the Basque flag. I didn't know about the Basque Region's fight for independence before then but Mr. Mccormack explained it to me. To greatly simplify it, the citizens of the Basque Region believe they shouldn't be members of France and Spain because they have their own traditions, customs and lifestyles that oppose those of the French and Spanish. After exploring the town we returned to the hotel, reflected on the day, ate dinner, and then went to bed. Day 2: The second day involved a lot more work than the first. It was also the day we officially started the Camino. It was a bit different going from sleeping on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 13. Canterbury Tales Analysis In Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, various people band together to go on a pilgrimage from England to Canterbury. Their aim is to see a shrine of St Thomas Beckett, the revered Archbishop of Canterbury who had reportedly healed others when they were ill. The pilgrims have a variety of occupations and are divided fairly evenly amongst the three estates (clergy, nobility, and commoners). The pilgrims who are members of the clergy are ironically depicted as the least moral, compared to the nobility and the commoners, creating a negative view of those who are leaders in the Church. The members of the clergy also spend their time wandering, metaphorically demonstrating their purposelessness, while the pilgrimage itself is a direct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, he works hard, both for God and for his community, and he lives happily. The Plowman is also one of the most pious pilgrims. According to Chaucer, "God loved he best with al his hoole herte" (GP 533). He also gives money to the church, demonstrating both his religiousness and his charitability, which is especially notable given his own poverty. In addition to the Plowman's religiousness, he lives a simple life, evidenced by his wearing of a tabard (a simple sleeveless shirt worn by the lower class) and the fact that he rides on a mare. Similarly to the Knight and the Squire, the Plowman is the ideal member of his estate, the peasantry. The Friar, Prioress, Monk, and Pardonner are the members of the clergy (the first estate) on the pilgrimage. The most corrupt of these is the Friar. He has the power to give confession, and he gives it easily, because those who have repented are more likely to give him donations. The Friar wanders around and becomes wealthy because of these donations. Chaucer also says that the Friar knows all of the barmaids in town, implying that he likely goes out drinking frequently, a habit that is not Christian–like. The Prioress also doesn't exemplify an ideal religious leader. While at first, the Prioress might appear kindhearted and moral, Chaucer adds in little descriptions to give the reader an odd impression of her. • 15. Pilgrimage And Place : An Old Testament View In Gordan McConville's chapter "Pilgrimage and 'Place': an Old Testament View, he reinterprets the meaning of pilgrimage in relation to the Old Testament. His consensus is the Christian theology views the history of holy sites and its geography as a restriction in a journey toward God. "Christians do not make hag to Jerusalem. There is no one holy place; God does not 'live' in Jerusalem even in the story of the Old Testament was never final or definitive," (McConville, 26). Having mass in our hostel room at A Paso de Formiga demonstrated McConville's perception of 'an extension of holiness.' The worshipping of God in a hostel room felt just as gratifying as having mass in a cathedral. This act clarified that the destination or place was a nonfactor in my journey toward God. There was a trusted community in mass that evening, for we all were on experiencing the same pilgrimage and searching for God's will. Now, I am not afraid to worship God during any time or at any place. Some of the pilgrims in class have asked me, why are you going on this pilgrimage? What does Santiago mean to you? My immediate response was, "I am on this pilgrimage because I felt like there is a better way to see. There is a better way to hear. My mind and heart has been clogged from traumatizing circumstances. I just want to breathe and smell better." One unfortunate incident that happened to me was when I was hiking down the road, and it put several complications in my travel plans. Letter Of A Civil War Nurse Document Analysis: Letters of a Civil War Nurse Sabrina Jehanzeb Hist 1301.003 Professor: Dr. Hudson Word Count: 1843 In "Letters of a Civil War Nurse", written in 1863, Cornelia Hancock's account of the Civil War gives readers an account of the suffering and hardship of soldiers through the point of view of an Union nurse. This document written by Cornelia Hancock is an account as a nurse who went through the Battle of Gettysburg and the after effects. Through a series of letters written to her loved ones, Cornelia wrote what nurses went through during the times of war. At the time women were expected to be good wives; with Cornelia Hancock's effort she was able to help soldiers and contribute to the idea that women are capable of much more than being good wives; women can be apart of war. With her background as a Quaker and her family history, Cornelia Hancock was able to contribute greatly to the war effort even though she was originally denied to becoming an union nurse. Cornelia was born on February 8, 1840 outside of Salem, New Jersey. Her ancestors were greatly involved in politics and religious activities. They were Quakers and sided with the Union, which added to the reason that she joined the Union Army as a nurse. This allowed her to become easily involved in a cause that she firmly believed in; she wanted to server her nation and got the chance once the revolution started. And that is exactly what is happening now. Our government doesn't want the atheists to get offended so they hurt the majority of the people by going against our own God and telling us not to pray for the safety of some people. The Bible tells us to pray without cease. And why should we stop? The prayer is even asking for the safety of the atheists. • 29. Art And Its Impact On The World What was interesting about this specific chapter was that normally the type of art is connected to the specific area where the art was created. Romanesque art however is not specifically connect to any one area. Although it was first noticed in Europe, this style of art was seen in many different places, using many different references, and techniques of past works, and cultures. When the trade routes were reopened in Europe the economy of the surrounding areas flourished, which helped the spread of art in general. This mixed with the turn of year one–thousand, during which the apocalypse did not happen helped the Christianity movement jump leaps and bounds across the continent. Within the Bible it is stated that one–thousand years after the death of Jesus christ he would return to judge the souls of the living and the dead. When that did not happen in the general population boomed and the overall spirituality of the Christian believers grew even larger. Thus began the social and spiritual tradition of the Pilgrimages. When someone chooses to become a pilgrim, they lose their social standing and become something all their own. People from all walks of life would feel free to talk and converse with anyone who is on a Pilgrimage. It is interesting to note that even though these journeys were very popular around this time, they were invented somewhere around the fourth century. His lack of secondary schooling and his French Catholic ancestry, despite being only partial, placed him on the wrong side of the two solitudes to improve his life. To be a landowner meant independence. A Powhatan Chief, Roy Crazy Horse, stated "It is unfortunate that this sad story, which Euro–Americans should find embarrassing, Disney makes 'entertainment' and perpetuates a dishonest and self–serving myth at the expense of the Powhatan Nation", although creators of the movie may have thought that it would be harmless, people could still find offense to Pocahontas. Holding onto Your Dreams in The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho) "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it" –Paulo Coelho Have you experienced holding on to a dream, a dream that serves as your passageway to achieving your Personal Legend? Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist focused on the concatenation of a boy's journey in life that began as an unfinished dream which led shepherd Santiago, the boy, to his own Personal Legend. However in the first part of the story, it somehow did not correlate with the novel's title. For it was only focused on the boys travel together with his flock of sheep. But then on the latter part of the novel, the essence of the title was revealed, for it introduced an important character in the novel who is the Alchemist. Aside from the title the author also used several instruments to abdicate the boy's personal legend. And the most important instrument that he used is the boy's dream. The boy's dream inside an abandoned church where there was an enormous sycamore that grew where the sacristy was. The boy's revelation of his dream to the interpreter goes like this: "I had the same dream twice; I was in the field with my sheep, when a child appeared and began to play with the animals. Unfortunately, the author offers no description of appearance of Santiago. But the author does reveal that Santiago is a shepherd. One could know that Santiago enjoys to travel all over the world. This is why he is shepherd. One could know this by reading the following context from the book: " 'The people who come [to this village] have a lot of money to spend, so they can afford to travel,' his father said. 'Amongst us, the only ones who travel are the shepherds.' 'Well, then I'll be a shepherd!' [the boy said]' ". This shows that the boy wanted to be a shepherd because of his dream of wanting to travel. As previously explained, the boy can represent anybody in this novel. He represents somebody who can travel all over to different places, meet new people, encounter obstacles through life, and learn new concepts of life. Another character is the alchemist, whom the author does not give a name at all. He is described as a horseman, on a white horse, who wears a turban and a black kerchief covering his whole face, except for his eyes. The tales are made up of each persons story that they tell along the way. Each of these characters adds to his great story told by Chaucer, however, the question is posed, who could he had from this century that would influence this pilgrimage? There are many types of people who could be added as characters to Chaucer 's story, however there are three that stick out in my mind that would make quite a difference. Three types of people that Chaucer could add from our time would be an inspiration speaker, a comedian and lastly a musician to create a change, one that was good, for the journey. The first pilgrim Chaucer might think to add to his group is an inspiration speaker. These types of people have a way with words, they get you to look at things in a new perspective. If an inspirational speaker were to go on the long trek, they may have been able to make the others who were quite sinful with their actions think twine not only about themselves, but the actions that they took. • 51. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control Guns are a controversial topic in America right now, and there are many different opinions about them. We see political parties argue about them all the time and we see that they have affected people in good and bad ways. Guns are somewhat exalted in America because of our "right to bear arms". The Second Amendment is definitely one of the most well–known rights, but how useful is it to us today? Does this amendment still apply to the everyday life of an American citizen, and does help us at all? The Second Amendment says "A well–regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.". United States has this amendment for a very specific reason; we wrote it in case a tyranny rose up in our government and we needed to rebel. During the time that this amendment was brewing the British government tried to confiscate the colonist's guns and weapons. This caused the founding fathers to create this amendment when they wrote the Constitution. They knew that a tyranny was a possibility in the new country so they took action by giving rights to protect themselves. Over the course of time the intentions of guns have changed and lately we haven't had to worry about tyrants. Guns are most commonly used for protection and hunting in the U.S. by citizens. As of 2013, 60% of gun owners said they have a gun for protection and 36% use it for hunting. Yet it seems that all the amount of protection we have doesn't work with all the shootings and gun violence we have. A majority of people will agree that U.S. has a problem with gun violence and mass shootings, but are guns the real problem? We have seen mass murders with guns a lot within the 21 st Century, and they seem to get worse as we go on. We have seen the effects of Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Las Vegas; all were mass shootings that took the lives of innocent kids and adults. There are many others such as the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, but what do these show about guns? It showed us that we may not have enough gun control laws, so we pushed for more laws. Yet we still see gun violence all over America, and it seems to get worse every time. When gun control laws were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Placing the palms of her hands on his head, she says, "May you obey the one who is your guide, even though he may issue an order that is homicidal, blasphemous, or senseless. You must swear total obedience to your guide." • 55. The Civil Rights and the LGBT Movements Essay example Although the conclusion of the Civil War during the mid–1860s demolished the official practice of slavery, the oppression and exploitation of African Americans has continued. Although the rights and opportunities of African Americans were greatly improved during Reconstruction, cases such a 1896's Plessy v. Ferguson, which served as the legal basis for segregation, continue to diminish the recognized humanity of African Americans as equal people. Furthermore, the practice of the sharecropping system impoverished unemployed African Americans, recreating slavery. The movement, using the slogan "Black Power," followed the teachings of Malcolm X, an African American leader who died the same year and who promoted that African Americans separate from white society in favor of forming their own community. The Black Panther Party, a militant organization that viewed themselves as soldiers warring against the white hierarchy, arose from such ideals. Despite the challenge that "Black Power" proposed to the nonviolent movement, civil rights activists continued persevered in finding the end of black discrimination legally. They found success in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which both contributed to legally naming minorities as equal citizens, as well as protecting the same from discrimination. Although the strength of the civil rights movement dissipated after the 1960s, activists continue to make efforts to end entirely the racial discrimination within America's economic and social policies. As the civil rights movement progressed, members of the movement who belonged to other minority groups, such as the homosexuals of all ethnicities and classes , were inspired and began organizations of their own; thus, the beginning of the gay liberation movement arose, promoting the rights and equality of those discriminated because of their sexuality, including but not limited to: lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people (LGBT). • 57. Prostitution In The Roman Empire: An Analysis This section will be a review of the current conversation taking place on the topic of prostitution pre and post Christian church in the Roman Empire. While there are several scholars discussing pre Christian church like Rebecca Flemming and Robert Knapp and a few like Thomas A.J. McGinn, Vern L. Bullough, and James A. Brundage who are discussing post Christian church none are documenting the evolution in perception, law, and sexuality concerning the prostitutes at the time of the transition from paganism to Christianity. It is important to note on the specific conversation about the church that there are two different views of the influence of the Christian Church that exist. One in which the people wander aimlessly without it and another where it comes in as a destructive and ugly dictator to control the society. This is where Rodoifo Lanciani, Vern L. Bullough, and Thomas A.J. McGinn argue against Peter Brown. In Lanciani's book Pagan and Christian Rome, he analyzes the changeover from paganism to Christianity and how it took 300 years of fighting to fully gain acceptance under Constantine in 323 and even then the people fought back. He also takes a look at how Christianity moved through the society and it is not as one would think. On page two Lanciani states, "It has been contended and many still believe that in ancient Rome the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 59. The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho Analysis Taryn Hagins 8/1/2017 6th Period The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho "On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid in doing this assignment" 1."It is who I dared to do so." said the boy. He was reminded of the image of Santiago Matamoros mounted on his white horse, with the infidels beneath his hooves. Point Of View, pg 73. "The Alchemist" is told in the third point of view, meaning that the narrator is not necessarily a character in the story. Therefore, the reader does not know how Santiago truly feels or thinks because he is not the one telling the story. The narrator writes how he acted and what he did, but we could not imagine how he truly felt. In "The Alchemist", the point of view is not Santiago himself because the author wants the readers to have their own perspective in the story. 2."...everyone in the market fell to their knees, touched their foreheads to the ground, and took up a chant. Then, like a colony of worker ants, they dismantled their stalls and left. Simile,pg 38. This story uses many similes and comparisons in it, like this one. A simile is a comparison between two things, using the words "like and as." This example, In particular, uses a group of people and a colony of ants. The author used this comparison because everyone was in sync with how they moved and acted. " " And this is my interpretation: you must go to the Pyramids in Egypt. I have never heard of them, but, if it was a child who showed them to you, they exist. There you will find a treasure that will make you a rich man. 3rd this is my interpretation: you must go to the Pyramids in Egypt. I have never heard of them, but, if it was a child who showed them to you, they exist. There you will find a treasure that will make you a rich man." Foreshadowing,pg 14. The author uses this as a form of captivating the audience's attention through the use of the supernatural, but he did not give away the entirety of the plot, and therefore it is not a legit phrase in the story to give away the ending. Foreshadowing can be used to make the readers assume a different conclusion by leaving temptation about a plot. a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. • 61. The Miracles Of St. James There were also stories about St. James ' retaliations against non–believers who questioned his power. Constable translates a story about Saracens who took over Compostela, and "by divine retribution, some of them were afflicted by looseness of the bowels, and shot whatever they had in their bellies out through their back passages. Others lost the sight of their eyes and wandered blindly about the church and the city." This account demonstrates what could happen if one did not show proper respect towards St. James. This served as a warning to whoever had evil intents towards the cathedral. Later in the story, Al–Mansur claims that if St. James restores him to his "earlier state of health" then he would renounce "Muhammad and will not come again to the land of great St. James bent on taking booty." The story has evolved into a conversion story. This showcases the power of Roman Catholic saints against non–believers, and how saintly actions can so powerfully affect individuals. Like the previous stories about the miracles of St. James, this would have been written for a Christian audience, as it has such a negative attitude towards the Saracens. Constable also translated a part from the Guide du Pelerin where "two penniless pilgrims returning from Compostela tried a whole street of houses before they were finally offered lodging. During the night all the houses in that street were burned down, apart from the one in which the pilgrims had spent the night." This story ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When Chaucer–the pilgrim arrives at the Pardoner, he becomes very focused on his physical appearance and what is seems to be missing. There is something odd about this Pardoner and Chaucer–the pilgrim can't seem to grasp just what that is. He describes that the Pardoner is all on fire to do is job, just arriving from Rome (Bretful of pardon, come from Rome al hoot). Putting together his femininely smooth, boyish appearance with the neutered animal pushes the emphasis on the Pardoner's ambiguous sexuality. This description of the Pardoner through Chaucer– the pilgrim's eyes reaffirms the other pilgrims' idea of him. His character is that of a gentle yet pompous boy, who spends much time on his own appearance, especially his hair. The Pardoner seems to attempt to market himself as a young bachelor in front of his fellow travelers but the attempt fails miserably. When he interrupts the Wife of Bath's prologue to say, "I'm getting married soon, tell me what to do to find a good wife," he further alienates himself from the group instead of redeeming himself as a funny person. His interruption comes off more as a need for others to see him as desirable by a female. Another odd quality of his character is his confession of his own sinfulness. The Pardoner commits this grievous rhetorical fault in trying to gain their pride. The other characters don't need to announce, "These are my sins," because we find out through their story what that character is like. However, the Pardoner has to announce his sins in hope of finding a connection with the other pilgrims, for his story does not explain his character at all. Most of these activists were Southern whites, who thought that it would progressively wither away. Only black abolitionists demanded an immediate end to slavery. Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l'Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth's role as a queen came at a time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie's role as a missionary in New France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of these writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial task of ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both writers utilize religion to accomplish their various duties. Marie utilized her understanding of religion and the Native's understanding of religion to build a relationship built on trust. She arrived in modern day Quebec in the late 1630's as a missionary from her country to educate and civilize the Natives there to match European traditions. Marie found similarities with the indigenous people as even though they didn't have a God, they had their own forms of worship. In Letter 65 to her son, she answers his questions regarding the "Savages'" beliefs on divinity. "Certain ones adored the sun and offered its sacrifices. Others had recourse to certain spirits who they said provided over the woods but all obeyed their dreams as a divinity" (Marie, 368).
