A Lost City Found Among The Coral Reefs Of The Pacific
A lost city found among the coral reefs of the Pacific, Nan Mandol is now ruins adjacent to the
eastern shore of the island of Pohnpei that once was the capital of the Saudeleur Dynasty until
1628 (Ayres et al. 1992). Recently, a research group from the Southern Methodist University led by
Mark D. McCoy found the earliest direct evidence of monument building at Nan Madol(McCoy et
al. 2016). This is a significant discovery that pushes back the initial age of dynasty in the Pacific
over 100 years, and provides anthropologist a new way to study the evolution of society. Before
this discovery, scientists had set the date for the first dynasty in the Pacific to around 1300 CE.
McCoy et al. (2016) stated, The earliest evidence of hierarchical... Show more content on

The age they established was 1180 CE, over 100 years earlier than was previously assumed. The
reason for its enhanced effectiveness is based around measuring the basalt samples carbon 14
content, and comparing it with the carbon 14 activity in modern and background samples. We
report the earliest secure dates on the construction of monumental architecture in the remote islands
of the Pacific located at the site of Nan Madol on Pohnpei Island in Eastern Micronesia. High
precision uranium series dating of coral from the tomb of the Saudeleur Dynasty indicate political
control over the entire island was established by AD 1180 1200 (770 750 yr) (McCoy et al.
2016). This evidence is a strong indicator that Nan Mandol has had significant influence on other
communities within Eastern Micronesia due to its early establishment. According to Clark et al.
(2007), evidence drawn from monumental architecture is one of the greatest indicators for
prehistoric socio political organization. Nan Mandol is therefore opening a door to study the
establishment of kingdoms in the Pacific. The island of Pohnpei is important for two reasons:
First its archaeology, second its geology. First, the date of settlement for Pohnpei has been
estimated at AD 1 (1950 cal yr BP) (Athens et al.1990). According to Hanlon et al. (1988),

The Segregated School Systems Throughout The United States
The segregated school systems throughout the United States led to questioning the lawfulness
of the school districts refusal to integrate public schools. Oliver Brown was a representative
plaintiff and a parent of a black child who was rejected by a white school in Topeka, Kansas. On
her way to school every morning, Brown s daughter would pass several white schools before
reaching her one room schoolhouse reserved for schooling the black children. According to
Brown, the Kansas school system was in breech of the Constitution s Equal Protection Clause.
Both the facilities and the opportunities that his daughter might find in her school were inferior
without the possibility of ever being equal. However, the federal district court ruled with the
Kansas school board. By referencing the separate but equal doctrine in the case of Plessy v.
Ferguson, the Kansas public schools were equal enough to be considered constitutional. As black
families across the nation searched for equality for their children, other district courts were also
deciding cases based on the rationale separate but equal . Discontent with the decisions made by
the various lower courts, the NAACP, a major civil rights organization, consolidated cases from
Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, and Delaware and appealed to the Supreme Court in a case
known as Brown v. Board of Education. Through evaluation of segregation s psychological effects,
the protection offered by the Fourteenth Amendment, and the separate

Huckleberry Finn Symbolism Essay
In Huckleberry Finn, a young boy and a runaway slave look to escape from sivilized land. This
adventure highlights the contrast between Huck s experiences on the Mississippi River, a
symbol for freedom, and his experiences in the South, a symbol for deceit. Twain uses this
symbolism to convey the theme of civilization and natural life. The land symbolizes how skewed
and messed up the South s morality is. Huck s first encounter with this is when the Widow
[takes him] for her son, and [allows] she would sivilize [him]; but it [is] rough living in the
house all the time (Twain 2). Huck does not enjoy the idea of having to be molded into a prim
and proper young man. Huck wants to live free and on his own without having to adhere to a
strict lifestyle. This is not quite the case with Huck on the big river, and nobody to bother [them]
(Twain 29). Huck finds a sense of comfort in getting away from the land in which he once lived as
he is now free to become his own person. Huck relishs life on the Mississippi... Show more content

Huck just wants to be free and [he] can t stand the thought of being civilized by Aunt Sally
(Twain 293). Huck does not enjoy the idea of being tied down the land, as Huck does not want to
be restricted. Huck also expresses that a normal Southerner lifestyle is not for because he is not
in compliance with the morals of the South. The river provides an escape for Huck as he has not
rules or stipulations to follow on the water. Huck finds living of the raft mighty free and easy
and comfortable (Twain 96). Huck takes delight in life upon the raft with Jim, as it frees him
from the trouble that is on the land. Huck s free willed spirit thrives on the freedom of the raft
and river more than the land because he lives without rules and order. The emotional aspect the
river provides for Huck is an escape from the confines of the civilized

SWOT Analysis Of Persistent Poverty In South Carolina
Poverty in South Carolina is an issue for all citizens. The issue is particularly acute if you are a
citizen living in poverty, but the issue is of critical importance to those citizens that must support
those areas stricken by persistent poverty. Unbeknownst to many South Carolinians is the persistent
povertycorridor in which certain counties struggle much more than others along Interstate 95.
Allendale County stands out even amongst its peers as a county that is struggling to address
multigenerational poverty. This paper deals with Allendale County poverty beginning by offering
insight into poverty issues within South Carolina, followed by a SWOT analysis, a finagling
offering a few possible solutions.
Persistent Poverty in South Carolina
Poverty within the United States is defined as having an income below a federally determined
poverty threshold. Poverty thresholds were developed by the United States government in the
1960s to benchmark levels of subsistence. Over time these thresholds are often adjusted to
account for inflation; it is now typical for the federal government to adjust the poverty threshold
levels annually. Poverty levels represent the government s estimate of the point below which a
family has insufficient resources to meet their basic needs. Any family with less income than the
established poverty amount is officially classified as poor or as living in poverty. Income, as
defined by the federal rules, can include cash and cash like welfare

Why Is Lizzie Andrew Borden Guilty
Lizzie Andrew Borden was found not guilty for the murder and mutilation of her step
mother and father. The famous poem reads Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave her mother forty
whacks, when she saw what she had done she gave her father forty one. (Rhyme) It occurred
during the 19th century when women were well known as the weaker or sly sex and at this
time it was also unheard of to put a woman on trial for this kind of crime. Although there were
no other suspects to the murder, there was no physical evidence that connected Lizzie or any
other person to the killing of her step mother and father. Lizzie Borden should have been found

After the trial began, the prosecution presented the head of an ax that was presumed to
be the murder weapon, but there was a tremendous lack of forensic evidence. Lizzie s father,
Andrew, was asleep on the couch at the time of his murder and although his gruesome murder
shocked the community, many people wanted him dead. His net worth was worth over 10
million dollars in today s money and he was also known as the wealthiest and most unpopular
man in the town. He made many enemies on his way to the top as a banker.
No one was ever convicted but circumstantial evidence connected Lizzie to the crime.
Lizzie Borden was the only suspect to this crime, and also the only other person in
the home at the time of the murders. The household guest John Morse was out visiting some
close relatives, her older sister Emma was running errands out of town, and the maid Bridget
Sullivan was washing windows. In order for an outside intruder to have done this crime, they
would ve had to hide in the house for 90 minutes or left and then returned without being seen.

The Despairing Act of Self Harm Essay
Have you ever, coincidentally, walked passed somebody with deep, open cuts on his/her wrist
and wondered what happened? Maybe, you thought it was a simple, harmless scratch caused by
obnoxious pets at home. Or maybe, you considered it as mild accidents, preferably caused by
doing arts and crafts at home or school. But, have you ever pondered thoroughly and have the idea
that those sad scarring were actually made by him/herself? Creating scars on your skin is actually
the action of self harm; the intentional hurting of one s self, direct to the body tissue, with or
without the intention of suicide. There are several types of self harm, such as hair pulling, banging

Though, there are several motives of self harm, a person who self harms by any means seeks the
same personal effects: a sense of relief, a diversion from hurtful emotion by expressing it
externally, or to simply sense something when feeling numb and empty. Adolescents and
teenagers expects self harm as an escape, as a way out of struggles. However, self harm bears
great consequences to those who practice it. As a matter of fact, it has never been a solution to
complications. The truth is, self harm only gives temporary satisfaction, and provokes to further
misery and discomfort. Self harm brings several damages; it affects both one s mind and physical
features. Damages of self harm involves:
Permanent, painful scars
Inability to bring an end to it or addiction
Feeling useless
Self hatred or low self esteem
Permanent numbness in hand or wrist
Broken bones and bruises
Stress to hide the self injury from others
Anxiety that someone will discover it
Secluded from society
Although there are a number of after effects, the worst that could happen to one s life is death.
When a person became too dependent on self harm, he/she could have the desire to take his/her

Conformity Quotes
The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it is conformity. This powerful quote comes
from Rollo May, an American psychologist. This quote acts as a huge indicator as to how hard it is
to break norms. Subsequently, it also reveals that society tends to reject or make it difficult for
those who go against the grain. A few examples of society having adverse reactions to deviation can
be found throughout the world. A significant example is the treatment of women like Malala
Yousafzai who attempt to gain an education. Another event in which society rejected those going
against the norm is ongoing persecution of homosexual men in Chechnya. Additionally, the theme
carries with the mistreatment of the Rohingya population in Myanmar.... Show more content on

The treatment of the Rohingya, an ethnic group native to the Rakhine state of Myanmar have faced
this prejudice in almost aspect of their lives. While under British rule, lots of migration occurred
between India and Myanmar, as it was considered internal migration it was legal under British rule.
After independence was gained by Myanmar, they declared all the immigration was illegal during
that time and accused the Rohingya of coming to Myanmar illegally. This led to the rejection of
citizenship for those under the Rohingya ethnic group, leading to them being stateless. In response
to their presence, the Myanmar government forced these Rohingyas into ghettos and restricted
almost every single right they once had, eventually going as far as raiding those in Rohingya
camps.. This population faced countless atrocities simply for being of that ethnic group. The
actions of Myanmar s government show the how far extent that persecution against those who

Oscar Zeta Acosta, A Strong And Honorable Man Essay
His appearance combined with the time and place he lived in made many things in his life
difficult to accomplish but it also made him, Oscar Zeta Acosta, a strong and honorable man.
Starting with the fact that there was a lot of racism, drugs and violence going on while he was
growing up. Violence especially was a big issue. In those days, firearmswere owned by anyone who
either had the money or knew a way to get it and most of the times they fell into the wrong hands.
Q: Hello Mr. Acosta, How are you doing this fine sunny day?
Acosta: Hi, I m actually doing good, aside from the unsupportable pain my goddamn ulcers cause
me. I swear there are times in which I can t stand the fucking pain.
Q: I m sorry to hear that Mr. Acosta, but moving on to other matters, as you can probably see,
there are many issues concerning many aspects of the economy and politics but for now, I would
like to focus on firearms and the many problems it s causing not just here in California but in the
United States as a whole. And so I would like to ask you for your sincere and honest opinion on the
matter.
Acosta: Yes, unfortunately there are still many issues happening at this very moment and one of
them is in fact the possession and usage of firearms and of course I will answer and give you my
honest opinion regarding this topic.
Q: Well first I would like to inform you, if you haven t heard so already, about the massive school

I Am A Pastor At A Church
Find your calling! Your mission! The one thing God has ordained for you to do for the rest of your
life! These were some of the words that I heard being preached to kids my age since I started going
to youth group in 7th grade. I heard these words, and I was excited. I was excited, but also nervous,
and scared, but hopeful at the same time: hopeful that one day I would find my calling for my life.
I would wonder my thoughts, thinking, what is my calling going to be? And where is it going to
take me? Am I going to be called to be a Pastor at a church? Is the church going to be small? Will it
be huge? Will it be far away? Or will I be called to be a missionary? Will I be called to go preach
the gospel to thousands of civilians in East Africa? Or will I just be called to be a one on one
counselor? Whatever it was, I couldn t wait for God to tell me what it was. A year or two went
by, and people all around me were receiving their calling. My sister was called into Worship
ministry, and my older brother was called to be a youth pastor. My friends were being called to
be missionaries, doctors, counselors, pastors, and all other sorts of things. And there I was, still
waiting to receive my calling. I thought, maybe I m just not ready for it: Maybe God s timing
hasn t come yet. I was born into my family as the middle child. I wasn t born as the take charge,
do it yourself, first born leader, like my oldest brother: or the spontaneous, outgoing, nosy princess,

Impact Of Economic Liberalisation On Livelihoods
The Impact Of Economic Liberalisation On Livelihoods In Nigeria
Economic liberalization on livelihoods in Nigeria refers to how the decrease in government
control, through deregulation and lesser restrictions in the economy to promote greater
participation of private entities, serves as a means of securing the basic necessities of life i.e. food,
water, shelter and clothing. This is done in an effort to encourage economic development through
the doctrine is associated with classical liberalism. Following in the pattern of major economic
reforms of emerging markets such as Brazil, China and India, Nigeria has followed the same path of
economic liberalisation to ameliorate itself in the global competition, in order to achieve a higher
standard of living.
In Nigeria, economic liberalization through deregulation and privatization, has been implemented
for various reasons, such as the demand for efficient and effective Public Enterprises, reduction in
external borrowing, stronger capital markets, and improve accountability, but most important of all,
for generation of employment and sustainable livelihoods for the betterment of Nigerian welfare
(World Bank, 2013).
SAP and NEEDS.
Economic reform through liberalization was first introduced in Nigeria in 1986 through the IMF s
Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), which was introduced to many sub Saharan African

they reduce the cost fuel. The newer jets run at better speed, decreasing the cost and actual air
travel time. JetBlue has associated itself with the program Nextgen. Newer methods are
developing to reduce fuel waste and to reduce air traffic (Jetblue.com/green, 2012). Containing the
cost to a smaller budget will continue to keep JetBlue ahead in the airline market, and still allows

Surviving The Dust Bowl Analysis
Surviving the Dust Bowl is an episode of the T.V. series American Experience, a historical
documentary show created by Henry Hampton and Stephen Fitzmeyer. This episode outlines the
struggles of living in what became to be known as the Dust Bowl from early to late 1930 s.
Devastating droughts had become to affect midwestern and southern plains in 1931, causing many
crops to die and large areas of land to become infertile. Surviving the Dust Bowlpersuades the
viewer to experience the perseverance required by southwestern farmers to overcome the
unimaginable adversities that they placed upon themselves during the Dust Bowl of the 1930 s.
The documentary does this through two main ways. Most of the movie is comprised of black and
white footage from that time. This adds a sense of connection, because the clips exemplify how
frightening it would have been for the farmers and their families to see huge clouds of black smoke
rolling over them, and the fact that it s on camera helps the viewer connect to it. Over this footage,
the directors inlay multiple survivor retellings to show the differences and similarities between
families that stayed during the Dust Bowl.
The directors use black and white footage of the Dust Bowl to persuade viewers into
understanding the hardships presented and perseverance needed to survive the Dust Bowl. The
movie first uses footage of regular looking farmers and their machines. This was done to show that
the people who were in the dust bowl

one specific health improvement issue.
Justification of the local area
For this specific community profile the chosen geographical area is Hartlepool. The writer felt
this to be an appropriate choice as it is a local area and could well be somewhere they work in their
future career in paediatric nursing.
Definition of a community
A body of individuals who have a sense of common identity may be defined as a community
(Slack, 1998). A community is also described as having similar attitudes or interests in common:
the people of a district or country considered collectively, especially in the context of social values
or responsibilities; society: a group of people living in the same place or having certain
characteristics in common (Oxford Dictionary, 2013). The purpose of a community profile is to
provide a more in depth understanding of a community and its characteristics.
Population level within Hartlepool and the UK
Hartlepool Council (2015) stated that the current population level within the local area stands at
approximately 98,000 residents (Bramley, no date). This number is somewhat higher than in
previous years with the population standing at 86,713 in 2010 (Public Health England 2015). This
shows that between 2010 and 2015 the population increased by 13% (Public health England, 2015).

Flight Descriptive Speech
Huge white smiles and warm handshakes is the kind of welcoming everyone receives as they board
a plane. From the flight attendant s smiles to the pilot s Welcome an automatic feeling of happiness
hits you. That feeling of happiness clearly lets you know you have boarded a plane. Stepping foot
onto the plane you are automatically greeted by warm smiles and handshakes. Both the flight
attendants and pilot s uniforms appear so clean and proper. As an attendant speaks, her voice is
almost considered annoying because of how screechy and preppy it sounds. Following the guy
in front of you, down the aisle, you feel like you re being towered over due to how tall he is.
Continuing slowly down the aisle your correct seat finally appears in front of you. You squat down
to pick up your bright bluehard shelled carry on suitcase to store in the overhead bin. Looking up
and putting your suitcase away you see it disappear as it falls gently back into the storage area.
You watch as various people around you slam their suitcases into their overhead bins and a loud
bang is sounded as the suitcase hits the back of the storage container. Looking down at your navy
blue leather seat you just know that seat will feel like sitting on a luxurious cloud. Grabbing the
silver part of the seat beltchills automatically run up your arms because that s just how cold the
inside of the airplane is. After everyone has boarded the plane has a slight sweaty disgusting smell

Zodiac Killer Thesis
As a young girl I always had a fascination with mystery books, it was my first favorite genre of
books. I had a huge interests for mystery and crime and the psychology behind it. But the one
crime that truly left me thinking for a while was the story of the Zodiac Killer. The Zodiac Killer
is a murderer who taunted the bay area with sending descriptions of his brutal crimes to the San
Francisco Chronicle to ultimately frighten them. His crimes were in the late 1960 s and up to
this day he has never been caught despite his sloppy mistakes. Even with technology so
advanced now it is still a cold case. If it was this guys wisdom or the detectives lack of wisdom
that made one man able to shake up all of California and get away with it, no one would ever
know. But mainly what we will never know is what drove one man to commit such horrid crimes
and could all this had been prevented by the community. As soon as a community experiences a
crime they always turn to the citys finest to do their job and figure out who did it and keep the
city safe and blame them if they are unable to find the killer. For example San Francisco eventually
began to blame their detectives for the crimes that were happening because they were unable to
catch the Zodiac Killer. San Francisco in the late 1960 s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Bluest Eye By Vanitha Pecora
Life at the periphery: The Bluest Eye, Vanitha P, mentions how Pecola sat for long hours looking
in the mirror, trying to discover the secret of the ugliness . Pecola thinks she has did something
wrong and sees that everyone in her eyes thinks she ugly. But it comes from her family thinking
that they all were ugly. Pecola emotional thinks getting these blue eyes would not just help her
look pretty but see a different prospective of what she sees and what people would see in her.
With her seating in the mirror for hours trying to find the secret of ugly is to show what the
world has treated her like. And Mrs. Breedlove don t think she s pretty and everyone at school
think she s ugly even the store man don t have reason to look at her where he so much don t even
want to touch her skin to get the pennies. Pecola is emotional drained from the people and even her
father Cholly. Who violates her dignity, her sense of being and is instrumental for her psychological

Divine Intervention in Homer s Epic Poem, The Iliad Essay
The gods and goddesses that the Greek people believe in make up the
Greek mythology studied today. These divine characters represent a family
living on Mount Olympus who intervene frequently in the lives of the human
characters in Greek plays. They are omnipresent, for they are always observing
mans actions and working through human nature. The gods are a higher power, and
provide explanations for otherwise unexplainable events. The gods help humans
in trouble and give them guidance about the future. The Olympians influence men
on earth both psychologically and physically. In Homer s epic poem, The Iliad,

The Iliad.
Athena also plays an influential role in the battles of Diomedes.
Martin Mueller reveals, Athena is closest to Diomedes. She is with him at
the beginning and end of his aristeia and she addresses him without disguise
(136). Athena also urges Diomedes to fight Aphrodite. With this command, she
removes the cloud from his eyes which made him able to see the gods.
Furthermore, as Robert Graves states, She put fresh strength into his legs and
arms, which allowed him to sustain in battle with Aphrodite (104). Athena
instructs Diomedes not to attack any other gods; but, Diomedes does not take her
advice, and fights against Apollo and other gods, which causes Diomedes to
retreat until he is saved by being reunited with Athena. This powerful goddess
assistsd Diomedes greatly as she does the other characters in The Iliad.
Another Greek warrior who is helped by Athena was Pandaros. Athena
encourages him to break the truce with Menelaos , but, as Steiner states,
This does not lessen his own responsibility for his treachery He is a fool to
be persuaded (46). Then, she switches to Menelaos side, to prevent any
serious harm from the arrow that was shot. Athena protects

Uniforms Should Be Paid In High School
In Springfield, Illinois a 6th grader was bullied by her classmates because her mom bought her
too fancy of clothes. She was told that she should dress more like a kid by wearing apple bottom
jeans and Nikes. One of the difficult aspects of high school besides the hard course load is fitting
in. Uniforms are beneficial and should be required at more schools because they prevent kids
from getting bullied, they are proven to help kids grades, and they help keep kids safe.
Kids all over the world get bullied in school for many reasons, just one of the being what they
wear. With some families having more money than others some kids have a bigger budget for
clothing than others. This leads to those kids with less money sometimes getting bullied because
of their clothes. From the story in the introduction you can see that people with less clothes aren
t the only people who get bullied in fact they are just a small portion of the people. Those who
have more money and wear too nice of clothes can get bullied as well or people who don t have the
same fashion sense as what is popular at the time. Kids have a lot on their plate ... Show more

Human Rights During The War On Terror Essay
INTP 245 Research Essay
What role do Human Rights play in the war on terror? How has this affected the foreign policy of
the United States of America when combating this war?
When looking internationally over the past decade there has been an emergence of vague definable
terms that act as holistic guidelines for how international order should be constructed. One of these
terms is human rights which acts as a set of overarching guidelines that all States should aim for
and achieve. States have incorporated the ideals of human rights into their foreign policies in
various ways especially in the area of war and conflict. This essay will focus on what role human
rights play in the war on terror and how the human rights discourse has affected the United States of
America s (USA) foreign policy on the war on terror. This ultimately illustrates that the Western
construct of human rights is an invaluable policy tool as a mandate to interfere in other states
affairs and USA have continually utilised it as such a tool.
The concept of human rights has become ambiguous, with very little agreement regarding its
meaning and application internationally. The concept of human rights could be deemed as what
Gallie termed as an essentially contested concept. This argues that when it comes to certain
concepts there is just simply no one clearly definable general use that is widely agreed on. There
are a variety of elements and words that can be used to describe the concepts of human

Rational And Rational Choice Theory
Rational choice theory posits that any individual makes behavioral choices because they logically
consider any potentially criminal situation, weigh the possible benefits versus the possible costs,
and make a decision to act based on whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks. Rational
choice theory differs from other philosophies in that it denies the existence of any kinds of action
other than the purely rational and calculative. All social action, it is argued, can be seen as
rationally motivated, as instrumental action, however much it may appear to be irrational or non
rational (Scott, 2000). Making rational choices means being motivated by personal wants, goals,
and needs. It is not possible for all wants and needs to be met or achieved; therefore, choices are
made in order to bring the greatest satisfaction and happiness to the individual. Individual does not
always reference one human being; rational choice theoryis a main idea in economics, sociology,
and many other social sciences. An individual with regard to the theory can be a corporation, group,
or other defined entity that engages in decision making. The limitations of this theory have led
researchers to develop many sub theories. One sub theory of rational choice is routine activity
theory, which posits that crimeis not an aberration of human society, but merely a common facet of
culture that only requires opportunity. First developed and published by Marcus Felson and
Lawrence E. Cohen in 1979,

Resistance Assay Lab Report
Introduction
Factor V Leiden is a hereditary gene mutation that leads to the disorder in the clotting process of
blood. It causes the diseases known as Factor V Leiden Thrombophilia or APC resistance. Factor V
functions normally in the coagulation pathway of the blood. But a mutation occurs and its cleavage
by the body s natural inhibitor Protein C is slowed. This leads to excessive clot formation in the
blood vessels. This mutation is the most common cause for a Deep vein thrombosis(DVT).1 DVT
happens most frequently in the legs but can also happen in other parts of the body.3 About 5% of
caucasians are heterozygous or homozygous carriers of this factor mutation.2 Heterozygous carriers

A Conversation Analysis
ENGLISH IN CONTEXT
ANALYSIS OF SPEECH
People spend a significant part of their lives listening and talking, that is the main reason why
conversation is regarded to be the most generalised form of talk that concerns both speakers and
listeners and it is contemplated to be the essential ingredient in co operative undertaking
(Wardhaugh, 1985). Conversation is informal talk involving two or more people and interviews
are a particular type of conversation. Interviews are regarded as meetings at which a journalist asks
questions in order to find out the interviewee s opinion. This is an assignment that analyses a
telephone interview, so there is an absence of eye contact, body language or facial expressions that

Two examples that portray this representative type are: the suppositional statement made by the
journalist at the beginning of the interview that reads Are we losing the overall picture here,
anybody in West Yorkshire who s getting a bit sore that Tetley s getting the elbow? (journalist, first
page); and, the supposition concerning the name s change for Royal Mail to Consignia that it was
like a flop, wasn t it? (journalist, second page). Furthermore, certain speech acts in this conversation
are examples of direct speech because the question that reads as I think of stories like Consignia,
you remember? (speaker, first page) is associated directly with its relevant answer in its literate
sense that reads as yeah (journalist, first page).
In cases that there is a hidden difference of opinion, a suggestion of politeness is formulated in
positive face polite statements and relates to the desire to be liked and express approval (Brown
and Levinson, 1987 cited in Maybin Mercer, 1996). The intention of satisfying the face needs of
others while protecting our own is evidenced in this interview s utterances such as, well, if I see it
from that point of view may well be (speaker, third page) that indicate a certain kind of polite tone
through mediating of opinion. The expression of personal opinions in a down to earth interview,
that overall touches the topic and captures the listener s ear, is re enforced

Analyzing Two Forms Of Media
Analysing Two Forms of Media
First impressions are extremely vital. We form an opinion within the first 30 seconds of meeting
someone and that plays a vital role in the relationships formed. Similarly with films, the audiences
usually identifies with the genre within a few minutes of the screening. With that in mind, this
analysis will focus upon decoding the opening sequence of two contrasting films in order to
understand its tone and genre. In this case, the opening sequence is defined as the point until which
the title is established, this is usually within the first 120 to 180 seconds of the film. I have chosen to
compare the mise en scГЁne of a modern day romantic comedy, What If (Michael Dowse, 2014)
versus the classic horror film, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This establishes the tone of the film as energetic and gives the audience the impression that the
narrative and characters are light hearted. Furthermore, the movie begins at night which suggests
a sense of romance, which is a central theme of the film. However, in The Shining , the camera
follows a single yellow car through a changing scenery of mountains and landscapes. From the
wideness of the shots, we see the environment as desolated and lonely. The audience is aware that
there is no sign of life apart from the driver of the car. This hints that isolation will be an important
theme of the film. It also establishes the driver as the central character of the film. Thomas
Caldwell describes framing as a way of withholding information from the audience (Caldwell,
2005). Although conversely, it is also a way of including an image or object within a frame to
convey a specific meaning. In What If shots of the Toronto skyline are frequently shown throughout
the film, usually in the background or out of focus, to reinforce the idea established in the
beginning that the city is another character in the film. Similarly, In The Shining the hotel is where
the entire narrative unfolds. Hence, it is imperative to focus on the location at the beginning of the
film itself.
The opening scene of What If is set at night but this is not to imply that the lighting is or dark but
that it is sultry, playful and romantic. The accompanying music which

A Group Of Two Hundred
A group of two hundred Watcher class fallen angels descended to Mount Hermon. These were
special angels commissioned by God to watch and observe humans and human activity on Earth. In
my opinion, these fallen angels , under the direction of Satan, took an oath to take human wives and
create human hybrids in order to corrupt the human genome.
From the book of Enoch:
6.1 And it came to pass, when the sons of men had increased, that in those days there were born to
them fair and beautiful daughters.
6.2 And the Angels, the sons of Heaven, saw them and desired them. And they said to one another:

God punished the watcher angels by binding them and placing them in complete and utter
darkness. In other words, complete sensory deprivation until the Great Day of Judgement. God also
forced them to watch as their sons killed one another in a Nephilim civil war.
From the book of Enoch:
10.4 And further the Lord said to Raphael: Bind Azazel by his hands and his feet and throw him
into the darkness. And split open the desert, which is in Dudael, and throw him there.
10.5 And throw on him jagged and sharp stones and cover him with darkness. And let him stay
there forever. And cover his face so that he may not see the light.

Humble and the Mysterious Phantom
Once upon a time there lived a creature that had been sighted to be a scaly monster; he lived in the
land called Shadow Mist. The land was grey, it was so grey it looked like there was gravel

The creature always slept but, even though the people knew this they never ventured to the land.
There was a lizard called Humble, he was a dark green lizard with scales all over him. He always

Essay on Buildings As An Underlying Cause of Global Warming

Progressive deterioration of global warming and protection of environment are important areas
of interest for the whole world. Buildings as an underlying cause are responsible for global
warming. Edwards (1996) pointed out that building has a key role to play as they are one of the
major sources of energy consumption. And he (1996) also stated with some statistics to support
this point that buildings account for about half of all global energy, water, and raw materials as
well as in the EU (Edwards, 1996, P. xiv). And another data is that buildings constitute about 45
per cent of carbon dioxide emissions (John, 1998, P. xi). In addition, buildings should be

Definition of green building
As people known, to use renewable resource and to save energy or comfortable indoor

Therefore if we want to define what is green building we should recognize the whole industrial

possibly of complex activity. Kats (2003) in his article stated that the sustainable or green building
should deal with those key points: environment, resource energy consumption, impact on people,
financial impact and the world at large which is a broader set of issues such as ground water
recharge or global warming, as well governmental policies are typically concerned about (Kats,

Reducing Recidivism Rate Of Juvenile Offenders
Reducing Juvenile Recidivism
Jessica D. Pettit
The University of Texas at Tyler
Abstract
This paper explores the factors that contribute to the recidivism rate of juvenile offenders.
Recidivism refers to a person s relapse into criminal behavior, often after the person receives
sanctions or undergoes intervention for a previous crime. It explains the advantages and
disadvantages that intervention programs, extracurricular activities, education and home and
family life have on juvenile offenders. A juvenile offender is defined as a child or young person
who has been found guilty of some offence, act of vandalism, or antisocial behavior before a
juvenile court (Gelber, 1979). The articles used in this paper are used to inform the reader of
various ways to help reduce the recidivism rate of juvenile offenders. Some of the articles explain
the advantages and others explain the disadvantages of the various programs.
Keywords: recidivism rate, juvenile offenders, reducing juvenile recidivism

A cardiothoracic surgeon in the U.S. is a physician D.O or M.D who first completes a general
surgery residency (typically 5 7 years), followed by a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship (typically 2

The Pros And Cons Of Prison Incarceration
Regardless of what you might see on TV the verdict of not guilty by the reason of insanity is an
immensely rare plea for anyone. A majority of offenders with a mental illness still end up
incarcerated. Even though the United States only makes up 5% of the world s population we
account for 25% of the world s prisoners. Which converts to 2.2 million prisoners and about 1.2
million of those people have a mental illness (Fellner). Mental illness within our jails and prisons
has become very prevalent within our correctional systems over the last 10 years. The number of
men and women who have a mental illness that end up in jail or prisongrows day by day. For those
who do not go into the prison with a mental illness, will very likely develop some form of mental
illness after being released from incarceration. The mentally ill do not belong in prison, the purpose
for incarceration is retribution, incapacitation, deterrence and rehabilitation, and though it is
originally meant for all of these purposes, it has lost its meaning. Correctional facilities are not
built to provide treatment for the mentally ill, and the people who have been diagnosed with a
mental illness cannot get the long term treatment they need inside of a prison cell. A significant
number of people who come into prison have a variety of mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia,
major depression, and manic depression. Approximately 5 6% of prison inmates have been
diagnosed with schizophrenia, these people

The American Media s Influence On The Italian American
The American media has had a substantial influence on the Italian American stereotype, especially
that regarding mobsters. The American cinema has created movies and TV shows such as The
Godfather, Goodfellas, The Sopranos, and more. The media has the power to influence how people
think and see things, including ethnic groupsand races. This was seen extensively in the 2016
United States Presidential election. Hollywood has always had the strength to have ethnic groups
be seen in a positive or negative light. In the twentieth century, the media had a negative portrayal
of Italian Americans that has evolved as time passed. The reason for the views changing with each
passing decade is the fact that foreigners and their future generations became more Americanized.
First, Hollywood and the media had a negative portrayal of Italian Americans compared to other
ethnic groups. In the article Family, Gang, and Ethnicity in Italian themed Hollywood Gangster
Films, the author Silvia Dibeltulo states that in movies where both Italian American and Irish
American gangsters were portrayed, Italian American gangsters were portrayed as more alien
whereas their Italian American counterparts were portrayed as more assimilated . This led to
Italians being negatively associated with the stereotypes from these movies, which led to anxiety
across the country. The article goes on to state more differences between the depictions of Italian
American and Irish American gangs in films. The

Advertising Connotation In Advertising
Advertising, a process that is perceived as innocuous, is in reality a powerful means that reaches
into the consumer s mind, manipulating their notions of reality. Essentially, all advertisements are
sending through subliminal messages to promote their company s products. In order to unveil these
underlying definitions, advertisement deconstruction takes place. This highlights the subtexts that
are in play, which exhibits the power of advertising. The advertisement that is the focal point for
such a deconstruction involves high class vehicle company, Lexus. The extraction of the signifiers,
which all work as a collaborative unit, reveals the denotations, connotations as well as the
discourses and ideologies that have been formed. Not only does this demonstrate the dismantling of
the text; it uncovers the raw meaning of the advertisement, unclothing what consumers fail to see
with the naked eye.
The Lexus vehicle, as shown in the advertisement above, is the overarching signifier within the text.
It is the advertiser s main objective to sell this vehicle, hence the product is the predominant focus
that grasps the attention of the consumer. The denotation reinforces that a car is on sale, as it is in
the centre of the image. In terms of the connotations, the paint covering the Lexus implies that this
car brand is dominant and reigns at a prestigious level. A silver shade is renowned in Western
society for signifying a position of social power. Even more so, the positioning

Analysis Of The Poem, God, Earth Walker And The Wanderer
From the first depiction of the subject of The Wanderer, earth stepper, earth walker, and the
Wanderer, the translators Greg Delanty, E. Talbot Donaldson, and Alfred David differ in their
translations (Delanty l. 6, Donaldson 112, David l. 6). These differences build throughout the rest
of the poem, eventually leading the audience to arrive at different conclusions based on each
translation. By translating the Christian ideas in the poem (God, Earth, human) with distinct word
choice, Delanty, Donaldson, and David create translations of The Wanderer that demonstrate the
pitfalls of choosing inaccurate language.
Delanty, Donaldson, and David cannot agree on the proper translation of the most central element
of Christianity, God, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By focusing on replicating the poetic structure of the original Old English in Modern English,
Delanty betrays his background as a poet, compared to David and Donaldson, who are both
professors. By choosing poetic form over a more accurate translation, Delanty describes a
concept of an impersonal deity, a concept that did not exist in the time of the poem, and leads the
audience to the conclusion that the poet confused religious views. Conversely, by drawing on
Biblical tradition, David and Donaldson inject strong Christian sentiment into the poem that the
original poet may not have intended and suggest to the audience that the Christian God held a
prominent role in Anglo Saxon religious life. In direct reference to God for the second time,
Delanty s choice of Shaper follows a different path than David s and Donaldson s Mankind s
Creator and Maker of Mankind, respectively (Delanty l. 85, David l. 85, Donaldson 113). Delanty
continues to develop the deity of the poem in distinctly non Christian terms. While the
capitalization of the term clearly indicates Delanty considers this moniker representative of God, he
does not make a connection to Christian teaching. This suggests Delanty believes the God, or
higher power, of the poem does not align with the God of Christianity and the poem has fewer
connections to Christianity than the translations of David or Donaldson would suggest. David and
Donaldson use similar

Forensic Technician
Mokokoma Mokhonoana once said, Science gave us forensics. Law gave us crime. Forensic
science has been used since the late 1700 s to determine the guilt or innocence in major criminal
cases by comparing the similarities in DNA. Fingerprinting dates back thousands of years to when
the Chinese used it to identify business documents. I want to become a forensic technician because
I have always been fascinated by crimeshows like CSI and Criminal Minds. I know actually

Major Themes In The Fifth Wave By Rick Yancey
The Fifth Wave Theme Essay
The author of the The 5th Wave, Rick Yancey, had several prominent themes. Three were most
vital; first, war cannot change who a person really is at their core, second, people are defined by
the choices they make, and third, family is worth living for. These are the best and most
important motifs of The 5th Wave. The first theme, war cannot change who a person really is at
their core, recurs during several incidences which reinstates the significance. For example, Ben
tries to make Ringer smile despite being in the midst of the end of the world. When Cassie and
Sammy reunite, he goes back to his five year old self despite his being in boot camp for months
prior, and lastly, Cassie and Evan flirt... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, Cassie had little to no human contact before she was shot in the leg and saved by Evan
Walker but she still did not hesitate to kiss him, cuddle, fight, or anything that a normal couple
would do. After fighting with each other, Evan Walker kisses me. Holding my hand against his
chest, his other hand sliding across my neck... Despite Cassie being shot in the leg by an unknown
shooter, aliens trying to take over the Earth, her brother being taken, and her family being dead, she
is still a teenage girl who enjoys male interaction.
An additional theme heavily shown throughout the book is people are defined by the choices they
make . Ben left his little sister, Sissy, to die, even though he could have made an effort to save her;
because he left her, he now vows not to run from danger or those things which scare him.
Furthermore, Cassie promises Sammy that she will find him and, because she makes that promise,
she will stop at nothing to be with him again.
At the beginning of the arrival, Ben and his family stayed at their house. One night, there are
gunshots and screams heard coming from their neighbors house; Ben s mother demands them to
blow out the candles which lit the rooms and his father told Ben that If anything happens to me,
take care of your mother and baby sister, (Page 117). After that, the door crashes open and Ben s
father shoots the male intruder to no avail his father is then shot in the face and Ben

The Challenges Of The Kuwait Diplomacy
Kuwait Diplomacy
Over the twentieth century there has always been a struggle of power within the middle east, and
particularly between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. Amongst the nations in the Arabian Peninsula,
the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always been at the most power and influential country. Saudi
Arabia and Iran were always polar opposites of each other. When Saudi Arabia first produced its
oil, it saw its economy benefit and heighten much more than Iran could do with its oil reserves. Oil
was one of the major element with Saudi Arabia and its neighboring countries that attracted Western
powers to its side and supported its foreign policies in direct opposition to Iran. After overthrowing
the Shah of Iran, the recession led to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The collapse of a state s authority and rise of militias and terrorist groups undermined other states
sovereignty and led to more violent proxy wars. Without the Iraqi buffer between the GCC and
Iran, more proxy wars began to spread all over the Middle East. One of the reasons that states in the
Arabian Peninsula were able to standoff terrorist attacks and proxy wars is because of the
authority the leaders wield which is forged over hundreds of years, the close kinship between the
states have proved detrimental to their survival in the past which is why they did not fall to
terrorists in the way Yemen, Iraqand Syria had.
The unique aspect that surrounds Iran is it is the only predominantly Shi a nations that is under a
Shi a authority; one way to understand Iran is that it is the polar opposite of what the Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia is. Iran remains isolated in the region, not as isolated as it was before Saddam
Hussein was in charge of Iraq but it is still slowly spreading its influence around the GCC and
surrounding nations through Hezbollah, which had support from Iran and is present in Lebanon,
Bahrain, Yemen and Syria. Gulf States recognize Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.
However, it is important to clarify that not all of the conflicts in the Middle East occur because of
Shi a Sunni factions. When discussing religion in the Middle East, another classification that is
often overlooked or ignored is race and ethnicity. In

Social Civilization In Korea
The Japanese colonization of Korea made Koreans an easy target of exploitation. Since Japan
was in a great need of cheap labor, Korean workers were recruited during 1920s. In this essay, I
am going to discuss the significance of institutional racial discrimination targeted towards Korean
workers in interwar Japan as a tool of alienation and exploitation. One of the abiding discernments
formed in Karl Marxs Capital is that in the colonies of capitalist nation states the apparitions of the
law of the supply and demandof labor are crushed. In the home country, the magnificent allurement
of capitalist production can be found in its capability to reproduce the wage laborer by regularly
setting him or her free, firing him or her and by creating a surplus population that rests in
approximate exteriority to capitalist manufacturing as the prerequisite for the commodification of
labor power. Regularly handling labor power as a expendable commodity is hence the way
capitalist manufacturing can assure that its most nonexpendable commodity labor power is
constantly there by the time capitalist manufacturing encounters so called labor shortages during
industrial expansion. It is this reproductive apparatus that enables the smug knavery of the
Japanese colonial policymaker to envision and to formalize into normalized principles of
economic shift, that owners of labor power who are de facto impelled to enter into a relationship
of reliance with the wage form can take part in

Importance Of Democracy In Wilhelmine Germany
To what extent was Wilhelmine Germany practicing democracy ?
Two important cornerstones of a democracy are the ability for the people to elect representatives,
and the willingness/power of these representative to make decisions in favour of their electorates.
Although there is no general consensus on parliamentization in Wilhelmine Germany, many
historians agree that Germans had a significant amount of experience with Democracy during this
era. This paper examines the political culture of Wilhelmine Germany and the parliamentisation of
the Reichstag in this period to assess the extent to which imperial Germany was practicing
democracy . Perhaps the strongest argument in favour of democratic tendencies in imperial
Germany is the remarkably high voting participation of the period. When Bismarck granted
suffrage to all men over the age of 25 for the direct election of an imperial Reichstag, he intended to
mobilize the German people without causing any real change. However, throughout the whole of
Europe, public education, military conscription, and growth of the popular press was changing the
relationship people had with the state. Consequently, there was a sharp increase electoral
participation in the years following the introduction manhood suffrage. Among eligible voters,
voting rose from 52% in 1871 to 85% in 1912. Voters not only turned out in high percentages, but
were habitual and consistent in the Reichstag elections that took place every three years. Sheri
Berman argues that elections must have been seen as meaningful, otherwise the German people
would not have bothered to turn out in such high numbers.
In addition to high participation rates, a high percentage of the population was represented in
elections relative to other great powers in this period. Whereas all men eligible to vote were
automatically registered in Germany, one third of the male population in Britain was precluded
from voting. In the United States, the need for voluntary registration in addition to discrimination
against African Americans led to only half of males of voting age participating in elections. Still,
critics of this outlook point to voting attitudes in addition to political intimidation and manipulation
during

Questions On Big Ad
QUESTIONS:
1). What prompts people to take this action? Answer: In 2005, Carlton Draught let loose on the
Internet an impressive advertisement called Big Ad. Served up by a web site, visitors could

constructed in a unique style; very big, looked very expensive and impressive and Internet
patrons received the site s advertisements impressively fast. The web site can install programs on

2). What current websites have clones (name both)? Answer: There are two examples of websites
that the article gives as a clone. The fist one is bonkofamerica.com versus bankofamerica.com to
fool visitors into trusting the phishing site. The second example the case study uses is democratic

Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.
But in the first half of the 20th Century, it wasn t just highbrow culture that was discussed in
New York or European capital cities. CafГ©s were a magnet for bohemians with their disorderly

These were the cafГ©s for the sophisticated avant garde culture made up of beautiful people and

which was a term coined by the columnist for the New York American, Maury Paul, whose writings

  • 2. A Lost City Found Among The Coral Reefs Of The Pacific A lost city found among the coral reefs of the Pacific, Nan Mandol is now ruins adjacent to the eastern shore of the island of Pohnpei that once was the capital of the Saudeleur Dynasty until 1628 (Ayres et al. 1992). Recently, a research group from the Southern Methodist University led by Mark D. McCoy found the earliest direct evidence of monument building at Nan Madol(McCoy et al. 2016). This is a significant discovery that pushes back the initial age of dynasty in the Pacific over 100 years, and provides anthropologist a new way to study the evolution of society. Before this discovery, scientists had set the date for the first dynasty in the Pacific to around 1300 CE. McCoy et al. (2016) stated, The earliest evidence of hierarchical... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The age they established was 1180 CE, over 100 years earlier than was previously assumed. The reason for its enhanced effectiveness is based around measuring the basalt samples carbon 14 content, and comparing it with the carbon 14 activity in modern and background samples. We report the earliest secure dates on the construction of monumental architecture in the remote islands of the Pacific located at the site of Nan Madol on Pohnpei Island in Eastern Micronesia. High precision uranium series dating of coral from the tomb of the Saudeleur Dynasty indicate political control over the entire island was established by AD 1180 1200 (770 750 yr) (McCoy et al. 2016). This evidence is a strong indicator that Nan Mandol has had significant influence on other communities within Eastern Micronesia due to its early establishment. According to Clark et al. (2007), evidence drawn from monumental architecture is one of the greatest indicators for prehistoric socio political organization. Nan Mandol is therefore opening a door to study the establishment of kingdoms in the Pacific. The island of Pohnpei is important for two reasons: First its archaeology, second its geology. First, the date of settlement for Pohnpei has been estimated at AD 1 (1950 cal yr BP) (Athens et al.1990). According to Hanlon et al. (1988), ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Segregated School Systems Throughout The United States The segregated school systems throughout the United States led to questioning the lawfulness of the school districts refusal to integrate public schools. Oliver Brown was a representative plaintiff and a parent of a black child who was rejected by a white school in Topeka, Kansas. On her way to school every morning, Brown s daughter would pass several white schools before reaching her one room schoolhouse reserved for schooling the black children. According to Brown, the Kansas school system was in breech of the Constitution s Equal Protection Clause. Both the facilities and the opportunities that his daughter might find in her school were inferior without the possibility of ever being equal. However, the federal district court ruled with the Kansas school board. By referencing the separate but equal doctrine in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson, the Kansas public schools were equal enough to be considered constitutional. As black families across the nation searched for equality for their children, other district courts were also deciding cases based on the rationale separate but equal . Discontent with the decisions made by the various lower courts, the NAACP, a major civil rights organization, consolidated cases from Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, and Delaware and appealed to the Supreme Court in a case known as Brown v. Board of Education. Through evaluation of segregation s psychological effects, the protection offered by the Fourteenth Amendment, and the separate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Huckleberry Finn Symbolism Essay In Huckleberry Finn, a young boy and a runaway slave look to escape from sivilized land. This adventure highlights the contrast between Huck s experiences on the Mississippi River, a symbol for freedom, and his experiences in the South, a symbol for deceit. Twain uses this symbolism to convey the theme of civilization and natural life. The land symbolizes how skewed and messed up the South s morality is. Huck s first encounter with this is when the Widow [takes him] for her son, and [allows] she would sivilize [him]; but it [is] rough living in the house all the time (Twain 2). Huck does not enjoy the idea of having to be molded into a prim and proper young man. Huck wants to live free and on his own without having to adhere to a strict lifestyle. This is not quite the case with Huck on the big river, and nobody to bother [them] (Twain 29). Huck finds a sense of comfort in getting away from the land in which he once lived as he is now free to become his own person. Huck relishs life on the Mississippi... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Huck just wants to be free and [he] can t stand the thought of being civilized by Aunt Sally (Twain 293). Huck does not enjoy the idea of being tied down the land, as Huck does not want to be restricted. Huck also expresses that a normal Southerner lifestyle is not for because he is not in compliance with the morals of the South. The river provides an escape for Huck as he has not rules or stipulations to follow on the water. Huck finds living of the raft mighty free and easy and comfortable (Twain 96). Huck takes delight in life upon the raft with Jim, as it frees him from the trouble that is on the land. Huck s free willed spirit thrives on the freedom of the raft and river more than the land because he lives without rules and order. The emotional aspect the river provides for Huck is an escape from the confines of the civilized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. SWOT Analysis Of Persistent Poverty In South Carolina Poverty in South Carolina is an issue for all citizens. The issue is particularly acute if you are a citizen living in poverty, but the issue is of critical importance to those citizens that must support those areas stricken by persistent poverty. Unbeknownst to many South Carolinians is the persistent povertycorridor in which certain counties struggle much more than others along Interstate 95. Allendale County stands out even amongst its peers as a county that is struggling to address multigenerational poverty. This paper deals with Allendale County poverty beginning by offering insight into poverty issues within South Carolina, followed by a SWOT analysis, a finagling offering a few possible solutions. Persistent Poverty in South Carolina Poverty within the United States is defined as having an income below a federally determined poverty threshold. Poverty thresholds were developed by the United States government in the 1960s to benchmark levels of subsistence. Over time these thresholds are often adjusted to account for inflation; it is now typical for the federal government to adjust the poverty threshold levels annually. Poverty levels represent the government s estimate of the point below which a family has insufficient resources to meet their basic needs. Any family with less income than the established poverty amount is officially classified as poor or as living in poverty. Income, as defined by the federal rules, can include cash and cash like welfare ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Why Is Lizzie Andrew Borden Guilty Lizzie Andrew Borden was found not guilty for the murder and mutilation of her step mother and father. The famous poem reads Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave her mother forty whacks, when she saw what she had done she gave her father forty one. (Rhyme) It occurred during the 19th century when women were well known as the weaker or sly sex and at this time it was also unheard of to put a woman on trial for this kind of crime. Although there were no other suspects to the murder, there was no physical evidence that connected Lizzie or any other person to the killing of her step mother and father. After the trial began, the prosecution presented the head of an ax that was presumed to be the murder weapon, but there was a tremendous lack of forensic evidence. Lizzie s father, Andrew, was asleep on the couch at the time of his murder and although his gruesome murder shocked the community, many people wanted him dead. His net worth was worth over 10 million dollars in today s money and he was also known as the wealthiest and most unpopular man in the town. He made many enemies on his way to the top as a banker. No one was ever convicted but circumstantial evidence connected Lizzie to the crime. Lizzie Borden was the only suspect to this crime, and also the only other person in the home at the time of the murders. The household guest John Morse was out visiting some close relatives, her older sister Emma was running errands out of town, and the maid Bridget Sullivan was washing windows. In order for an outside intruder to have done this crime, they would ve had to hide in the house for 90 minutes or left and then returned without being seen.

Maybe, you thought it was a simple, harmless scratch caused by obnoxious pets at home. Or maybe, you considered it as mild accidents, preferably caused by doing arts and crafts at home or school. But, have you ever pondered thoroughly and have the idea that those sad scarring were actually made by him/herself? Creating scars on your skin is actually the action of self harm; the intentional hurting of one s self, direct to the body tissue, with or without the intention of suicide. • 9. Conformity Quotes The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it is conformity. This powerful quote comes from Rollo May, an American psychologist. This quote acts as a huge indicator as to how hard it is to break norms. Subsequently, it also reveals that society tends to reject or make it difficult for those who go against the grain. A few examples of society having adverse reactions to deviation can be found throughout the world. A significant example is the treatment of women like Malala Yousafzai who attempt to gain an education. Another event in which society rejected those going against the norm is ongoing persecution of homosexual men in Chechnya. This led to the rejection of citizenship for those under the Rohingya ethnic group, leading to them being stateless. In response to their presence, the Myanmar government forced these Rohingyas into ghettos and restricted almost every single right they once had, eventually going as far as raiding those in Rohingya camps.. Oscar Zeta Acosta, A Strong And Honorable Man Essay His appearance combined with the time and place he lived in made many things in his life difficult to accomplish but it also made him, Oscar Zeta Acosta, a strong and honorable man. Starting with the fact that there was a lot of racism, drugs and violence going on while he was growing up. Violence especially was a big issue. In those days, firearmswere owned by anyone who either had the money or knew a way to get it and most of the times they fell into the wrong hands. Q: Hello Mr. Acosta, How are you doing this fine sunny day? Acosta: Hi, I m actually doing good, aside from the unsupportable pain my goddamn ulcers cause me. I swear there are times in which I can t stand the fucking pain. Q: I m sorry to hear that Mr. Acosta, but moving on to other matters, as you can probably see, there are many issues concerning many aspects of the economy and politics but for now, I would like to focus on firearms and the many problems it s causing not just here in California but in the United States as a whole. And so I would like to ask you for your sincere and honest opinion on the matter. These were some of the words that I heard being preached to kids my age since I started going to youth group in 7th grade. I heard these words, and I was excited. I was excited, but also nervous, and scared, but hopeful at the same time: hopeful that one day I would find my calling for my life. I would wonder my thoughts, thinking, what is my calling going to be? And where is it going to take me? Am I going to be called to be a Pastor at a church? Is the church going to be small? Will it be huge? Will it be far away? Or will I be called to be a missionary? Will I be called to go preach the gospel to thousands of civilians in East Africa? Or will I just be called to be a one on one counselor? Whatever it was, I couldn t wait for God to tell me what it was. A year or two went by, and people all around me were receiving their calling. My sister was called into Worship ministry, and my older brother was called to be a youth pastor. My friends were being called to be missionaries, doctors, counselors, pastors, and all other sorts of things. And there I was, still waiting to receive my calling. I thought, maybe I m just not ready for it: Maybe God s timing hasn t come yet. I was born into my family as the middle child. • 14. Surviving The Dust Bowl Analysis Surviving the Dust Bowl is an episode of the T.V. series American Experience, a historical documentary show created by Henry Hampton and Stephen Fitzmeyer. This episode outlines the struggles of living in what became to be known as the Dust Bowl from early to late 1930 s. Devastating droughts had become to affect midwestern and southern plains in 1931, causing many crops to die and large areas of land to become infertile. Surviving the Dust Bowlpersuades the viewer to experience the perseverance required by southwestern farmers to overcome the unimaginable adversities that they placed upon themselves during the Dust Bowl of the 1930 s. The documentary does this through two main ways. Most of the movie is comprised of black and white footage from that time. This adds a sense of connection, because the clips exemplify how frightening it would have been for the farmers and their families to see huge clouds of black smoke rolling over them, and the fact that it s on camera helps the viewer connect to it. Over this footage, the directors inlay multiple survivor retellings to show the differences and similarities between families that stayed during the Dust Bowl. The directors use black and white footage of the Dust Bowl to persuade viewers into understanding the hardships presented and perseverance needed to survive the Dust Bowl. The movie first uses footage of regular looking farmers and their machines. This was done to show that the people who were in the dust bowl ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Zodiac Killer is a murderer who taunted the bay area with sending descriptions of his brutal crimes to the San Francisco Chronicle to ultimately frighten them. His crimes were in the late 1960 s and up to this day he has never been caught despite his sloppy mistakes. Even with technology so advanced now it is still a cold case. As soon as a community experiences a crime they always turn to the citys finest to do their job and figure out who did it and keep the city safe and blame them if they are unable to find the killer. How has this affected the foreign policy of the United States of America when combating this war? When looking internationally over the past decade there has been an emergence of vague definable terms that act as holistic guidelines for how international order should be constructed. One of these terms is human rights which acts as a set of overarching guidelines that all States should aim for and achieve. States have incorporated the ideals of human rights into their foreign policies in various ways especially in the area of war and conflict. This essay will focus on what role human rights play in the war on terror and how the human rights discourse has affected the United States of America s (USA) foreign policy on the war on terror. This ultimately illustrates that the Western construct of human rights is an invaluable policy tool as a mandate to interfere in other states affairs and USA have continually utilised it as such a tool. The concept of human rights has become ambiguous, with very little agreement regarding its meaning and application internationally. The concept of human rights could be deemed as what Gallie termed as an essentially contested concept. This argues that when it comes to certain concepts there is just simply no one clearly definable general use that is widely agreed on. • 28. Rational And Rational Choice Theory Rational choice theory posits that any individual makes behavioral choices because they logically consider any potentially criminal situation, weigh the possible benefits versus the possible costs, and make a decision to act based on whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks. Rational choice theory differs from other philosophies in that it denies the existence of any kinds of action other than the purely rational and calculative. All social action, it is argued, can be seen as rationally motivated, as instrumental action, however much it may appear to be irrational or non rational (Scott, 2000). Making rational choices means being motivated by personal wants, goals, and needs. It is not possible for all wants and needs to be met or achieved; therefore, choices are made in order to bring the greatest satisfaction and happiness to the individual. Individual does not always reference one human being; rational choice theoryis a main idea in economics, sociology, and many other social sciences. An individual with regard to the theory can be a corporation, group, or other defined entity that engages in decision making. The limitations of this theory have led researchers to develop many sub theories. One sub theory of rational choice is routine activity theory, which posits that crimeis not an aberration of human society, but merely a common facet of culture that only requires opportunity. We form an opinion within the first 30 seconds of meeting someone and that plays a vital role in the relationships formed. Similarly with films, the audiences usually identifies with the genre within a few minutes of the screening. With that in mind, this analysis will focus upon decoding the opening sequence of two contrasting films in order to understand its tone and genre. In this case, the opening sequence is defined as the point until which the title is established, this is usually within the first 120 to 180 seconds of the film. Furthermore, the movie begins at night which suggests a sense of romance, which is a central theme of the film. From the wideness of the shots, we see the environment as desolated and lonely. The audience is aware that there is no sign of life apart from the driver of the car. This hints that isolation will be an important theme of the film. It also establishes the driver as the central character of the film. Thomas Caldwell describes framing as a way of withholding information from the audience (Caldwell, 2005). Although conversely, it is also a way of including an image or object within a frame to convey a specific meaning. In What If shots of the Toronto skyline are frequently shown throughout the film, usually in the background or out of focus, to reinforce the idea established in the beginning that the city is another character in the film. Similarly, In The Shining the hotel is where the entire narrative unfolds. Hence, it is imperative to focus on the location at the beginning of the film itself. Other authors such as Elisa Julliano use ethos to go against gun control. Using the same strategy the author turns the reader to getting rid of guns in America by showing credibility in several ways. First we see ethos expressed to stop gun control in Pros/Cons: Gun Legislation through the sentence, We, along with our fellow plaintiffs, were hopeful for a more favorable decision from the 2nd Circuit, but we are not surprised that this decision was handed down from this level, said Scott Wilson, president of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League. As Julliano includes the work of others she shows the name of the person or group responsible for the information creating an in text citation. Using in text citations helps the writer show knowledge of the issue at hand giving the author credibility and raising the odds of readers sharing the opinions learned from Pro/Con: Gun Legislation and articles like it that are against having guns in America. Again in Guns Safety Middle Ground by Devin Hughes we see the author will use the work of others to credit his own. Essay on Buildings As An Underlying Cause of Global Warming Introduction Progressive deterioration of global warming and protection of environment are important areas of interest for the whole world. Buildings as an underlying cause are responsible for global warming. Edwards (1996) pointed out that building has a key role to play as they are one of the major sources of energy consumption. And he (1996) also stated with some statistics to support this point that buildings account for about half of all global energy, water, and raw materials as well as in the EU (Edwards, 1996, P. xiv). And another data is that buildings constitute about 45 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions (John, 1998, P. xi). In addition, buildings should be accountable to most of land loss in agriculture. Hollywood has always had the strength to have ethnic groups be seen in a positive or negative light. In the twentieth century, the media had a negative portrayal of Italian Americans that has evolved as time passed. The reason for the views changing with each passing decade is the fact that foreigners and their future generations became more Americanized. First, Hollywood and the media had a negative portrayal of Italian Americans compared to other ethnic groups. In the article Family, Gang, and Ethnicity in Italian themed Hollywood Gangster Films, the author Silvia Dibeltulo states that in movies where both Italian American and Irish American gangsters were portrayed, Italian American gangsters were portrayed as more alien whereas their Italian American counterparts were portrayed as more assimilated . Advertising Connotation In Advertising Advertising, a process that is perceived as innocuous, is in reality a powerful means that reaches into the consumer s mind, manipulating their notions of reality. Essentially, all advertisements are sending through subliminal messages to promote their company s products. In order to unveil these underlying definitions, advertisement deconstruction takes place. This highlights the subtexts that are in play, which exhibits the power of advertising. The advertisement that is the focal point for such a deconstruction involves high class vehicle company, Lexus. The extraction of the signifiers, which all work as a collaborative unit, reveals the denotations, connotations as well as the discourses and ideologies that have been formed. Not only does this demonstrate the dismantling of the text; it uncovers the raw meaning of the advertisement, unclothing what consumers fail to see with the naked eye. The Lexus vehicle, as shown in the advertisement above, is the overarching signifier within the text. It is the advertiser s main objective to sell this vehicle, hence the product is the predominant focus that grasps the attention of the consumer. The denotation reinforces that a car is on sale, as it is in the centre of the image. These differences build throughout the rest of the poem, eventually leading the audience to arrive at different conclusions based on each translation. By translating the Christian ideas in the poem (God, Earth, human) with distinct word choice, Delanty, Donaldson, and David create translations of The Wanderer that demonstrate the pitfalls of choosing inaccurate language. By focusing on replicating the poetic structure of the original Old English in Modern English, Delanty betrays his background as a poet, compared to David and Donaldson, who are both professors. By choosing poetic form over a more accurate translation, Delanty describes a concept of an impersonal deity, a concept that did not exist in the time of the poem, and leads the audience to the conclusion that the poet confused religious views. Conversely, by drawing on Biblical tradition, David and Donaldson inject strong Christian sentiment into the poem that the original poet may not have intended and suggest to the audience that the Christian God held a prominent role in Anglo Saxon religious life. In direct reference to God for the second time, Delanty s choice of Shaper follows a different path than David s and Donaldson s Mankind s Creator and Maker of Mankind, respectively (Delanty l. 85, David l. 85, Donaldson 113). Delanty continues to develop the deity of the poem in distinctly non Christian terms. While the capitalization of the term clearly indicates Delanty considers this moniker representative of God, he does not make a connection to Christian teaching. These are the best and most important motifs of The 5th Wave. Despite Cassie being shot in the leg by an unknown shooter, aliens trying to take over the Earth, her brother being taken, and her family being dead, she is still a teenage girl who enjoys male interaction. Furthermore, Cassie promises Sammy that she will find him and, because she makes that promise, she will stop at nothing to be with him again. Since Japan was in a great need of cheap labor, Korean workers were recruited during 1920s. In this essay, I am going to discuss the significance of institutional racial discrimination targeted towards Korean workers in interwar Japan as a tool of alienation and exploitation. One of the abiding discernments formed in Karl Marxs Capital is that in the colonies of capitalist nation states the apparitions of the law of the supply and demandof labor are crushed. In the home country, the magnificent allurement of capitalist production can be found in its capability to reproduce the wage laborer by regularly setting him or her free, firing him or her and by creating a surplus population that rests in approximate exteriority to capitalist manufacturing as the prerequisite for the commodification of labor power. Regularly handling labor power as a expendable commodity is hence the way capitalist manufacturing can assure that its most nonexpendable commodity labor power is constantly there by the time capitalist manufacturing encounters so called labor shortages during industrial expansion. It is this reproductive apparatus that enables the smug knavery of the Japanese colonial policymaker to envision and to formalize into normalized principles of economic shift, that owners of labor power who are de facto impelled to enter into a relationship of reliance with the wage form can take part in ... Two important cornerstones of a democracy are the ability for the people to elect representatives, and the willingness/power of these representative to make decisions in favour of their electorates. Although there is no general consensus on parliamentization in Wilhelmine Germany, many historians agree that Germans had a significant amount of experience with Democracy during this era. This paper examines the political culture of Wilhelmine Germany and the parliamentisation of the Reichstag in this period to assess the extent to which imperial Germany was practicing democracy . Perhaps the strongest argument in favour of democratic tendencies in imperial Germany is the remarkably high voting participation of the period. When Bismarck granted suffrage to all men over the age of 25 for the direct election of an imperial Reichstag, he intended to mobilize the German people without causing any real change. However, throughout the whole of Europe, public education, military conscription, and growth of the popular press was changing the relationship people had with the state. Consequently, there was a sharp increase electoral participation in the years following the introduction manhood suffrage. Among eligible voters, voting rose from 52% in 1871 to 85% in 1912. Voters not only turned out in high percentages, but were habitual and consistent in the Reichstag elections that took place every three years. Sheri Berman argues that elections must have been seen as meaningful, otherwise the German people would not have bothered to turn out in such high numbers. In addition to high participation rates, a high percentage of the population was represented in elections relative to other great powers in this period. Whereas all men eligible to vote were automatically registered in Germany, one third of the male population in Britain was precluded from voting. In the United States, the need for voluntary registration in addition to discrimination against African Americans led to only half of males of voting age participating in elections.
