This document summarizes the results of a study on long-term bowel function outcomes in patients who underwent primary transanal endorectal pull-through surgery for Hirschsprung's disease. The study found that 37% of patients reported no impaired bowel function. Bowel problems were more common in syndromic patients. A significant number of patients continued to have long-term problems related to fecal incontinence. Completely transanal procedures may predispose to long-term functional defects. Most bowel function significantly improved with increasing patient age, though some patients had significant problems as adults.
