This document reviews energy-efficient MAC protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), highlighting their significance in maximizing network lifetime due to power constraints. It classifies MAC protocols into four categories: contention-based, TDMA-based, hybrid, and cross-layer protocols, each addressing energy conservation challenges distinctively. The study concludes that while various protocols exist, achieving a universally accepted energy-efficient MAC standard remains a critical and complex issue in WSN design.
