LESSON 13

Empowerment
- refers to the development of self-confidence,
self-control, relationship with other, and the
firmness to gain political power to achieve
improved inputs and equality.
It is briefly designed as “the process of increasing
personal, interpersonal, or political power so that
individuals can take action to improve their life
situations”.
People in the community can be empowered in 2 ways:
1. Personal Empowerment
2. Social Empowerment
Personal Empowerment
•can be attained by a
person who can
directly control what
is happening in their
own lives.
Social Empowerment
– is the condition for
people to have access
to opportunities and
resources to make
personal choices.
Six principles by the Strength Perspectives to fully
empower a community:
1. It is important to identify and use the community’s assets and strengths.
2. Community problems such as poverty, and peace and order, among
others, may be viewed as avenues for improvement and growth.
3. Realize the direction of the community and determine ways on how to
improve it.
4. Allot time to work and be one with the members of the community to be
aware of issues as based for plan development and to achieve effective
results.
5. Provide care, support and help to the community’s over all well-being.
UNDERSTANDING ADVOCACY
– is defines as the active
intervention of community
members to seek ways to obtain
the needed resources that are not
available in the community.
What is ADVOCACY?
UNDERSTANDING ADVOCACY
is one who speaks on behalf
of the community in order to
achieve fair or equal
treatment or gain the needed
resources.
ADVOCATE
ROLES OF AN ADVOCATE:
▪Speaking for the people and representing
them to those in authority.
▪Protecting those who are vulnerable
▪Creating support to enhance social
functioning
▪Protecting and advancing claims or appeals
Advocacy Programs conducted by various groups:
➢Advocacy Programs to Address Drug Abuse
➢Advocacy Programs for the Environment and
Animal Welfare
➢Advocacy Programs for Health
Advocacy Programs to Address Drug Abuse
➢“Barkada Kontra Droga” or
Peer Groups Against Drugs.
– this is a peer-based preventive
education and information
program which seeks to address
the ill effects of drug abuse.

Control – this provides open
discussion among youth
participants in addressing
problems on drug abuse.

➢Greenpeace Philippines
– undertake the mission to
save the environment

Nature – Philippine (WWF-
Philippines)
- focuses on addressing
issues on the Philippine
environment

commits to help conserve
sites and habitats, protect
endangered species,
encourage sustainability,
and empower people

– ensures the protection
and humane treatment
of all animals

➢Volunteer Youth for Health
Philippines – aims to promote
awareness on the prevention
of birth defects, newborn
screening, and support for
orphan disorders.

➢United Nations World Food
Programme – seeks to address
the issue of hunger. The
program focuses on climate
action, disaster risk reduction,
gender equality and nutrition.
MEDIA AND ADVOCACY
Media – is an effective communications tool
which greatly aid in advocacy and fighting for
positive change in society.

  • 2. Empowerment - refers to the development of self-confidence, self-control, relationship with other, and the firmness to gain political power to achieve improved inputs and equality. It is briefly designed as “the process of increasing personal, interpersonal, or political power so that individuals can take action to improve their life situations”.
  • 3. People in the community can be empowered in 2 ways: 1. Personal Empowerment 2. Social Empowerment
  • 4. Personal Empowerment •can be attained by a person who can directly control what is happening in their own lives.
  • 5. Social Empowerment – is the condition for people to have access to opportunities and resources to make personal choices.
  • 6. Six principles by the Strength Perspectives to fully empower a community: 1. It is important to identify and use the community’s assets and strengths. 2. Community problems such as poverty, and peace and order, among others, may be viewed as avenues for improvement and growth. 3. Realize the direction of the community and determine ways on how to improve it. 4. Allot time to work and be one with the members of the community to be aware of issues as based for plan development and to achieve effective results. 5. Provide care, support and help to the community’s over all well-being.
  • 7. UNDERSTANDING ADVOCACY – is defines as the active intervention of community members to seek ways to obtain the needed resources that are not available in the community. What is ADVOCACY?
  • 8. UNDERSTANDING ADVOCACY is one who speaks on behalf of the community in order to achieve fair or equal treatment or gain the needed resources. ADVOCATE
  • 9. ROLES OF AN ADVOCATE: ▪Speaking for the people and representing them to those in authority. ▪Protecting those who are vulnerable ▪Creating support to enhance social functioning ▪Protecting and advancing claims or appeals
  • 10. Advocacy Programs conducted by various groups: ➢Advocacy Programs to Address Drug Abuse ➢Advocacy Programs for the Environment and Animal Welfare ➢Advocacy Programs for Health
  • 11. Advocacy Programs to Address Drug Abuse ➢“Barkada Kontra Droga” or Peer Groups Against Drugs. – this is a peer-based preventive education and information program which seeks to address the ill effects of drug abuse.
  • 12. Advocacy Programs to Address Drug Abuse ➢National Youth Congress on Drug Abuse Prevention and Control – this provides open discussion among youth participants in addressing problems on drug abuse.
  • 13. Advocacy Programs for the Environment and Animal Welfare ➢Greenpeace Philippines – undertake the mission to save the environment
  • 14. Advocacy Programs for the Environment and Animal Welfare ➢World Wide Fund for Nature – Philippine (WWF- Philippines) - focuses on addressing issues on the Philippine environment
  • 15. Advocacy Programs for the Environment and Animal Welfare ➢Haribon Foundation – commits to help conserve sites and habitats, protect endangered species, encourage sustainability, and empower people
  • 16. Advocacy Programs for the Environment and Animal Welfare ➢Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) – ensures the protection and humane treatment of all animals
  • 17. Advocacy Programs for Health ➢Volunteer Youth for Health Philippines – aims to promote awareness on the prevention of birth defects, newborn screening, and support for orphan disorders.
  • 18. Advocacy Programs for Health ➢United Nations World Food Programme – seeks to address the issue of hunger. The program focuses on climate action, disaster risk reduction, gender equality and nutrition.
  • 19. MEDIA AND ADVOCACY Media – is an effective communications tool which greatly aid in advocacy and fighting for positive change in society.
