This document discusses employee motivation through three key psychological theories:
1) Herzberg's theory of motivation identifies factors that lead to job satisfaction or dissatisfaction. Satisfiers include achievement and recognition while dissatisfiers include company policy and supervision.
2) Maslow's hierarchy of needs proposes that people are motivated to fulfill basic physiological needs before moving on to more advanced needs for safety, belonging, esteem and self-actualization.
3) Object-oriented theory uses the metaphors of a carrot (reward), whip (punishment), and plant (nourishment) to motivate employees through goals, threats, and individual support. Balancing these factors is important to avoid cultures of fear or indifference.
