Empathy: The Fundamental Skill Of Our TimesFCB Brasil
Why is it we can put ourselves in the shoes of certain movie characters and suffer, celebrate, smile and even cry right along with them? How can we express the powerful sense of approval we feel when someone understands us without judging us? Why do discussions about politics quickly degenerate into vicious arguments? It’s all a question of Empathy, which is our capacity to put ourselves in the shoes of others and feel things the way others do.
Studying this emotion and its relationship with brands is the purpose of the second edition of Trusparency 2.0: Empathy, a proprietary study by FCB Brasil conducted in 2012 about the importance of transparency in the discourse of brands. In partnership with co-creative strategic thinking consultants CO.R Inovação, the agency spent months mapping Empathy around Brazil to understand how the ability to see the world through the eyes of another creates opportunities for more intimate communications and even for the creation of more attractive products and services.
'How to Win Friends and Influence People' is a self-help book written by Dale Carnegie, published in 1936. Over 30 million copies have been sold worldwide, making it one of the best-selling books of all time. In 2011, it was number 19 on Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential books. I have created this presentation in a Book Club Meeting Pune Toastmasters Club.

Talk abstract:
When considering how to design products, teams, or even common every day household objects, empathy doesn't end up on the required features list. Yet, without empathy, teams with enormous technical skills can fail in their quest to deliver quality products to their users. Incredible projects fail to create communities because they don't exercise it. Fail at empathy, and your chances of failing at everything skyrockets.
Contrary to what you may have heard, empathy is not something you're innately born with - it's a skill that can be learned, cultivated, refined and taught to others. In this presentation, your lovely co-speakers will discuss the value of empathy, how you can cultivate it in yourself and your organizational culture, and conclude with concrete steps for leveling up in your interactions with your fellow human beings.
This webinar is for anyone who would like to improve their communication with difficult people. Judith Katz, MS, will present a set of simple tools that you will be able to apply immediately to any communication situation. The process she will be presenting on is a four-step methodology developed by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg that has been taken up by thousands of people and applied in businesses, community organizations, and government institutions around the world.
The need for the leaders of today is empathy. It encourages commitment and cooperation, with companies even investing in training their managers to be more empathetic.

What makes things popular? Why do people talk about certain products and ideas more than others? Why are some stories and rumors more infectious? And what makes online content go viral?
If you said advertising, think again. People don’t listen to advertisements, they listen to their peers. But why do people talk about certain products and ideas more than others? Why are some stories and rumors more infectious? And what makes online content go viral?
Wharton marketing professor Jonah Berger has spent the last decade answering these questions. He’s studied why New York Times articles make the paper’s own Most E-mailed List, why products get word of mouth, and how social influence shapes everything from the cars we buy to the clothes we wear to the names we give our children. In this book, Berger reveals the secret science behind word-of-mouth and social transmission. Discover how six basic principles drive all sorts of things to become contagious, from consumer products and policy initiatives to workplace rumors and YouTube videos.
Contagious combines groundbreaking research with powerful stories. Learn how a luxury steakhouse found popularity through the lowly cheese-steak, why anti-drug commercials might have actually increased drug use, and why more than 200 million consumers shared a video about one of the seemingly most boring products there is: a blender. If you’ve wondered why certain stories get shared, e-mails get forwarded, or videos go viral, Contagious explains why, and shows how to leverage these concepts to craft contagious content. This book provides a set of specific, actionable techniques for helping information spread—for designing messages, advertisements, and information that people will share. Whether you’re a manager at a big company, a small business owner trying to boost awareness, a politician running for office, or a health official trying to get the word out, Contagious will show you how to make your product or idea catch on.
To be a teacher is more than give instructions, you have to understand students ways of learning, infer what it happens inside their minds, it is to understand their role as a student.

Design for Change: Empathy as our Guide: Amy Cueva Keynote at Partners Center...Amy Cueva
This presentation was a part of the "Design for Change" track at the October 29, 2015 Partners Center for Connected Health Symposium. The presentation discusses how Empathy can be our guide as we seek to improve health experiences.
Empathetic stories have had a huge impact on the ability of General Mills to uncover deep needs and spur the development and launch of successfully differentiated new products. In this short notes slide presentation, Anne Orban, M.Ed., NPDP, Director of Discovery & Innovation at Innovation Focus Inc, communicates the basic framework for this tool and her enthusiasm for its value to companies with lackluster new product performance.
Empathy Circles are a hands on empathy practice. The circles are based in science from many different disciplines such as psychology, neuroscience, biology, philosophy and arts (i.e. dance and literature). When developing the empathy circles, we did not want to get fussy over the term while getting distracted from the real important outcomes of the volumes of books, scientific studies and practices developed. We therefore decided to take a blended approach to empathy and started to actually practice in the empathy circles what all these different disciplines had to say about it. We blended science and practice to both decipher what empathy looks and feels like as well as figure out what works and what does not work in practice. Combining the different disciplines lead us to propose five phases of empathy: Self-empathy, mirrored empathy, reflective empathy, imaginative empathy and empathic creativity or -action. At the core of these five phases of empathy are different levels of synchronicity between two or more people.
Empathy Circles are meant to be a hands-on method in supporting your practice.

What are you blind spots conquering the 5 misconceptions that hold leaders back Kam Kazemi
Blind spots! Yes, your existing leadership beliefs and experiences are the reason why 60-90% of leaders’ dreams, aspirations, and strategies are not executed, and why 70% of the people in our organizations are not actively engaged. The problem ends now. Many organizations and leaders are using beliefs and methods grounded in the industrial age to try to motivate and engage employees to create change and sustain growth. Learn from Jim Haudan, Chairman and Co-Founder, and Rich Berens, President and CEO, of Root Inc. as they detail five leadership blind spots that hinder employee engagement and innovation in the workplace. If you’re hoping to be an organization that stands apart because of strong engagement scores, this session will offer actionable, real-life tactics to start making positive changes today.

Your website's not just designed for your audiences: it's designed for everyone. Which means it needs to be accessible to everyone.
Often, accessibility falls into the hands of back- and front-end developers. But just as important is the ongoing maintenance of content within the CMS - the headings and images and alt tags and simple verbiage used to communicate your brand's message: a message that deserves to be seen and heard by everyone.
In this talk, we will dive into what we can do as editors to help fuel more accessible websites, separating the code from the content and making clear the responsibilities we all have in making sure the web is a better place for everyone.

From Corey Vilhauer's workshop "Making things real: Content strategy for realistic content management" at Confab Intensive 2017 in Denver, Colorado.
Everyone has a plan. Until reality sets in.
You've seen it all before. A marketing team that's created unreasonable expectations. A designer who's looking to break barriers—without regard to the content model. The myth of personalization. The dangers of the completely customizable website.
And now it's your job to bridge the gap between dreams and usable web programming. How do we take what we want and translate it into something usable? How do we take someone's ideas and turn them into a usable web implementation, navigating the constraints and pitfalls of project dreams, organizational bias, and unrealistic expectations?
It's called "reification," and it's the act of making something real. We're not talking code. We're not talking CMS selection. We're simply talking about helping those we work with understand the content management landscape though a common language and practical questions. Let's take the best case scenario and get it closer to a real life scenario. Let's make things real.

Everyone has a plan. Until reality sets in.
You've done the interviews, and you’ve rallied the team, and now you have a dream. Here’s the thing: Your dream isn’t going to work. No dream ever does. Instead, your dream is going to cause disappointment and frustration, because it hasn’t been paired with the content management robots that will eventually serve and store your future website.
How do we prepare our dreams so they can function within the cold world of web programming? How do we help teams understand the reality of content management, and set expectations accordingly? How do we balance the rigidity of a content model with the creative flow of a marketing team? More than anything, how do we get everyone on the same page—from ideation to CMS help text?
It's called “reification,” and it's the act of making something real. We’re not talking code. We’re not talking CMS selection. We’re simply talking about helping those we work with understand the content management landscape through a common language and practical questions. Let’s take the best case scenario and get it closer to a real life scenario. Let's make things real.
In this session, you’ll learn how to:
* More effectively plan content projects for both the editors and the CMS.
* Balance the complexity of a content model with the talents and efficiencies of the editorial team.
* Account for structural needs while still maintaining discussion of messaging and overall branding.
* Better communicate how content models affect the final usability of the CMS.

“How Silos Learn: Working in the Idea Factory” by Amanda Costello - Now What?...Blend Interactive
Taking up the cry against organizational silos can bring both empathy and cringing. Of course, silos are awful and keep us from doing our best work, but when you’re in the middle of a silo – and maybe that silo is inside ANOTHER silo – well, what’s a website manager to do?
Based on her career among higher education’s ivory-tower silos, Amanda Costello brings together lessons from architecture and the Midwestern landscape to examine not only how to understand our silos, but to teach them a thing or two as well.
In 2017, “adaptive content” has become a buzzword. To some, it’s a complex, long-term initiative to structure content for flexible reuse and dynamic targeting. To others, it’s a way to ensure that everyone, everywhere, sees exactly what they want—like magic! In this talk, Karen shares her perspective (and reservations) on how adaptive content is being used today. She’ll discuss how adaptive content supports targeting content to device type—and why that’s rarely necessary. She’ll also describe ways that adaptive content can support tailoring content according to context—and ways that can go wrong. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of when adaptive content is necessary and how to get the most value from it.

Search engine algorithms are always changing, it can feel impossible to keep up. But the goal behind every Google search result has always stayed the same—to give people exactly what they want and need. If that’s Google’s #1 goal, then why would we cater to search engines instead of working harder to make our audience happy? Great SEO that results in better visibility and higher conversions always maps back to the people behind the keywords. In this talk, Chris will show you practical SEO techniques and approaches you can use to make sure your content is helpful, relevant, and findable, too.

The temptation with video content is to do too much: too many stories, too many voices, too many seconds! Parsing a bigger message into smaller bites offers a flexibility to align with an integrated marketing strategy. But it’s not about speeding things up or cutting things out.

The picture wasn’t getting any better: they were missing out on a lot of potential revenue by being hostile to people with disabilities.
Jake pulled out his phone and sent a message to his team in Slack. “We’ve got some work to do”

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Do you want to learn how to model and simulate an electrical network from scratch in under an hour?
Then welcome to this PowSyBl workshop, hosted by Rte, the French Transmission System Operator (TSO)!
During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
What you will learn during the webinar:
- For beginners: discover PowSyBl's functionalities through a quick general presentation and the notebook, without needing any expert coding skills;
- For advanced developers: master the skills to efficiently apply PowSyBl functionalities to your real-world scenarios.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
16. EMPATHY
The action of understanding, being
aware of, being sensitive to, and
vicariously experiencing the feelings,
thoughts, and experience of another of
either the past or present without
having the feelings, thoughts, and
experience fully communicated in an
objectively explicit manner.
17. EMPATHY
“...empathy can be described
as feeling the feelings of
another with the greatest
accuracy and effort.”
