An embargo is a request by an information source that news or details not be published until a specific date or conditions. Embargoes are used by sources providing advance information or reports to journalists to allow time for analysis and prepare balanced coverage. However, maintaining embargoes is challenging in today's fast-paced digital environment where information can be instantly shared online.

means hindrance, obstruction, etc. in a general

 In journalism a news embargo or press
embargo is a request by a source that the
information or the news provided by that source
should not be published until a certain date or
certain conditions have been met.

9.  The Washington were accused of jumping the gun
for publishing information embargoed by the Joint
United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. The Post
story, by Johannesburg correspondent Craig
Timberg, reported that the United Nations' plans this
week to announce that it was drastically cutting its
estimate of the size of the global HIV/AIDS
epidemic from about 40 million to about 33 million.
The Post published the story to the Web on Nov. 19,
and led with the story in its Nov. 20 print edition.

covering AIDS in Africa for several years. Had he agreed to
an embargo, he would have honored it, he says, as he has
honored embargoes before. But he maintains that he worked
independently to get the story, which cites UNAIDS

UNAIDS had been "talking" under embargo to a reporter on

information.
