WebLab-Deusto is a remote laboratory management system developed at the University of Deusto that allows students to perform experiments remotely. It collects data on student usage, including authentication logs, experiment access, and social network interactions. This data is analyzed through dashboards and advanced analytics to gain insights into student learning and collaboration. The system also supports federation that enables sharing of remote laboratories between different institutions. Future work will include deploying the dashboard, expanding federation capabilities, and publishing anonymized usage data for other researchers.

The website myExperiment is already popular for collaborating on, publishing and sharing scientific workflows, however we have found that for understanding and preserving a workflow over time, its definition is not enough, specially faced with workflow decay, services and tools that change over time. We have therefore adapted the research object model as a foundation for the myExperiment packs, allowing uploading of workflow runs, inputs, outputs and other files relevant to the workflow, relating them with annotations and integrated the Wf4Ever architecture for performing decay analysis and tracking a research object’s evolution as it and its constituent resources change over time.

Cited by a 2012 TIME Magazine cover story (“One A Day”) suicide, particularly the military, is a severe public health problem: Veteran suicide rates, nearly double those of adults in the general U.S. population. And to date there has been a lack of success so far in military efforts to understand and address the suicide crisis: “No program, outreach or initiative has worked against the surge in Army suicides, and no one knows why nothing works.” (Time) In this talk we will describe how we have built a real time risk assessment framework with the US Veterans Administration. As well as how Hadoop and HBase are being used to build further systems based on our new Bayesian Counters framework to predict realtime risk. Bayesian Counters framework was, in part, developed to predict military mental health risks. Trying to help to solve this complicated puzzle, towards the goal of reducing suicidality among those who have served the nation.

Talk at eResearch New Zealand Conference, June 2011 (given remotely from Italy, unfortunately!) Abstract: Whitehead observed that "civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking of them." I propose that cloud computing can allow us to accelerate dramatically the pace of discovery by removing a range of mundane but timeconsuming research data management tasks from our consciousness. I describe the Globus Online system that we are developing to explore these possibilities, and propose milestones for evaluating progress towards smarter science.
