An electric circuit requires a closed loop that allows electricity to flow from a power source, through a conductor like a wire, to an electrical component such as a light bulb, and back to the power source. A basic circuit includes a battery, wires connecting the battery to a light bulb, and sometimes a switch to open or close the circuit. Standard symbols are used to represent the different components of a circuit in diagrams.
