This document provides instructions for forming the present tense in Spanish. It explains that the present tense is used to talk about things happening now or generally. It then outlines how to conjugate regular verbs based on their endings of -AR, -ER, or -IR by removing the infinitive ending and adding the appropriate personal ending. Some common irregular verbs are also noted.

2. We use the present tense
when we are talking about
something which is happening
now or which happens in
general.

3. Examples:
• I drink
• You go
• He thinks
• She eats
• We dance
• You buy
• They run

4. To form this tense first we take the
infinitive of the verb.
E.G. comprar (to buy)
comer (to eat)
vivir (to live)
This will either end in:
AR
ER
or
IR

5. Then we chop off the ending
and add one of the following (see next slide)
depending on whether it is an
AR, ER or IR verb.

6. Person AR ER IR
I o o o
You (singular) as es es
He/she a e e
We amos emos imos
You (plural) áis éis ís
They an en en

7. Remember there are also some irregular verbs
which do not follow this pattern.
Some of the common ones are:
ser (to be), estar (to be), ir (to go), hacer (to do/to make),
tener (to have), querer (to want), poder (to be able) and decir
(to say)

of your vocabulary book and should try to learn them off by
heart.
