Progressivism

Overview
The movement had its roots in the
thought of many people, but its major
founders were Francis Parker and John
Dewey. Progressive philosophy was based
on an optimistic view of human nature.

Progressivism
The idea that education comes from the
experience of the child.
This theory was started in America in the
late 19th century and continued to develop
through the first half of the 20th century.
As such, children are the focus in a
progressive classroom.
The center of gravity is within each child. That
is, progressive education revolves around the
child's needs, not around the teacher or a
prescribed curriculum.
Teaching students to be good citizens and not
just good learners.
Focuses on children is the idea that children
live and learn in a community.
 In progressive education, children often
collaborate on projects and learn from
one another.
Progressivist
Progressivists believe that education should
focus on the whole child, rather than on the
content or the teacher. This educational
philosophy stresses that students should
test ideas by active experimentation.
Learning is rooted in the questions of
learners that arise through experiencing the
world. It is active, not passive.
The learner is a problem solver and thinker
who makes meaning through his or her
individual experience in the physical and
cultural context. Effective teachers provide
experiences so that students can learn by
doing.
Curriculum content is derived from student
interests and questions. The scientific
method is used by progressivist
educators so that students can study
matter and events systematically and first
hand. The emphasis is on process-how
one comes to know.
Why teach?
• To develop learners into becoming
enlightened and intelligent citizens of a
democratic society.
• To teach learners to live life fully NOW not
to prepare them for adult life.
WHO is the Teacher?
• The guide of the students in the course of
their learningis.
• Competent in content of the subject and is
knowledgeable in methods of inquiry, the
lessons are not solely directly given by the
teacher but are drawn out from the students.
WHO is the Teacher?
• S/he is process oriented with a philosophy
of holistic development or whole child
orientation.
What to teach?
• A curriculum that responds to students
needs.
• A curriculum that relates to students
personal lives and experiences.
What are the GOALS of the
Progressive Teacher?
• To stimulate the students to initiate, plan
and carry out their projects on their own.
• Encourages students to communicate in
solving problems as a group not only
within the context of the lesson, but more
importantly on real-life problems.
What are the GOALS of the
Progressive Teacher?
• Be able to identify the interests of the
students to use this as their avenue for
learning and make all of their lessons
experiential as much as possible.
Differences between;
EssentialismEssentialism Progressivism
Education is intellectually demanding and
very rigorous.
Focuses on student interest and curiosity
while essentialists focus on student effort
and discipline.
Students should be constantly challenged
by a well-informed teacher, who is very
knowledgeable about their subject
matter(Ellis, 2010).
Teacher uses the students' experiences to
incorporate learning, rather than just
dumping information that only the teacher
has into their brains.
Curriculum should be based around core
disciplines, and involve textbooks, specific
goals, formal evaluations, standardized
tests and grades.
Teachers involve students in an activity
based learning environment; these
activities are supposed to help the
students develop real-world skills that they
can apply to their present and future
everyday lives.
The teacher would help direct the students
in activities that involve real life situations.
