Editing Process
A2 Documentary
“7 – THE MAKING OF THE TEAM”
Original Introduction
At the start of production we had delays on the filming of the footage as
we had to place it on the designated training days for the players. We
decided to create a draft introduction from the clips we caught on the
first training session. For the piece we deiced to use royalty free music to
not break copyright which meant we were limited to a minimal selection.
Especially ones which fitted our piece as a sporting documentary. Our
first choice of music was ‘High Energy Rock’
Final Introduction
Once we gained feedback from our first draft we decided a voice over would be
needed to introduce the documentary. Although the form is predominantly
observational, this addition of the short voice over adds a narrative guidance to the
piece and parts of a reflexive documentary. The into was a hard edit, from
questionnaires we gained that a collection of fast paced montages would be
effective. This meant a lot of cutting and editing clips into short almost jump edits
and going through vast amounts of footage to find the right clips for the position
and music.
First Draft
We created a first draft edit with the combination of all the shots at the time. This
allowed us to see were we could take the documentary and what the final outcome
would roughly be like. We decided we didn’t like the direction it was going so
changed it for the final piece (below).
Title Pages
Our first original plans implemented the use of a black out then quotes appearing
on the screen as pause breaks between shots. After editing the clips together with
the majority of our final clips we realised as a group that the technique didn’t fit
with the direction we were going with for the piece.
Timings
After analysing a number of sporting documentaries we found many of them used
dates and timings before each change of scene, placed on their establishing shot. Our
first devised idea was to show the following of the Reeds team for a week, with each
day being a different training method. However similar to the quotes as a group we
thought this would be a good idea at first but after seeing the final product and
showing our first draft to a small focus group the feedback was negative to both so
we replaced it.
Music
We used the editing process at first as a very experimental one. We looked at
trying new things with the piece an gauging their effectiveness or more commonly
their lack of. The original music in our first draft showed this as it didn’t fit the
piece and the direction we wanted it to go.
Interviews
Due to the type of documentary we wanted to create the use of
interviews from experts, coaches and players would be very effective.
The best way to utilise an interview is to get a clip of the interviewee
and then place relevant clips over the top, or in our case to play the
audio below. We choose to keep the clip as a full so we could see who
was being interviewed but we also detached the audio.

Editing Process

  • 1. { Editing Process A2 Documentary “7 – THE MAKING OF THE TEAM”
  • 2. Original Introduction At the start of production we had delays on the filming of the footage as we had to place it on the designated training days for the players. We decided to create a draft introduction from the clips we caught on the first training session. For the piece we deiced to use royalty free music to not break copyright which meant we were limited to a minimal selection. Especially ones which fitted our piece as a sporting documentary. Our first choice of music was ‘High Energy Rock’
  • 3. Final Introduction Once we gained feedback from our first draft we decided a voice over would be needed to introduce the documentary. Although the form is predominantly observational, this addition of the short voice over adds a narrative guidance to the piece and parts of a reflexive documentary. The into was a hard edit, from questionnaires we gained that a collection of fast paced montages would be effective. This meant a lot of cutting and editing clips into short almost jump edits and going through vast amounts of footage to find the right clips for the position and music.
  • 4. First Draft We created a first draft edit with the combination of all the shots at the time. This allowed us to see were we could take the documentary and what the final outcome would roughly be like. We decided we didn’t like the direction it was going so changed it for the final piece (below).
  • 5. Title Pages Our first original plans implemented the use of a black out then quotes appearing on the screen as pause breaks between shots. After editing the clips together with the majority of our final clips we realised as a group that the technique didn’t fit with the direction we were going with for the piece.
  • 6. Timings After analysing a number of sporting documentaries we found many of them used dates and timings before each change of scene, placed on their establishing shot. Our first devised idea was to show the following of the Reeds team for a week, with each day being a different training method. However similar to the quotes as a group we thought this would be a good idea at first but after seeing the final product and showing our first draft to a small focus group the feedback was negative to both so we replaced it.
  • 7. Music We used the editing process at first as a very experimental one. We looked at trying new things with the piece an gauging their effectiveness or more commonly their lack of. The original music in our first draft showed this as it didn’t fit the piece and the direction we wanted it to go.
  • 8. Interviews Due to the type of documentary we wanted to create the use of interviews from experts, coaches and players would be very effective. The best way to utilise an interview is to get a clip of the interviewee and then place relevant clips over the top, or in our case to play the audio below. We choose to keep the clip as a full so we could see who was being interviewed but we also detached the audio.
