The document discusses the various media technologies used at different stages of planning, researching, and evaluating media productions. YouTube was used to research music video conventions and genres to determine the genre for their projects. Google was used to research film theory and conventions. Microsoft Word was used to create schedules and track progress. A Canon HD camera and cell phone were used to shoot footage, while iMovie and Final Cut Pro were used to edit videos. WordPress was used as a blog to document research findings. YouTube and WordPress were also used to gather audience feedback to evaluate completed projects.
How media technologies aided research, planning and evaluation in film production
1. How did you use media technologies in
the construction and research, planning
and evaluation stages?
2. For my research I used YouTube to look at many
music videos and draw up a table writing down
what shots, conventions and the different genres
of the video. From that we could decide our
chosen genre of rap/hip-hop and start looking into
conventions and gaining inspiration from that
genre. This gave us a feel of what location, props,
conventions of that genre we would need to
emulate and manipulate to suit our needs.
3. Also in AS I used YouTube to research film noir codes and
conventions. Then, I used YouTube to look at many music videos
and draw up a table writing down what shots, conventions and
the different genres of the video. From that we could decide our
chosen genre of rap/hip-hop and start looking into conventions
and gaining inspiration from that genre. This gave us a feel of
what location, props, conventions of that genre we would need to
emulate and manipulate to suit our needs. We used Google
search engine to research theory and conventions of A2 and AS
productions. Such as I used this to learn and research
conventions of film noir in AS which really helped with my
planning of AS. Then in A2 I used Google to research different
theories like Andrew Goodwin's theory of music videos. Which
meant I good use this in the planning of my music video. In the
research stage we had to create animatic for our AS film I-Movie
helped create this. It was quick and easy to understand and
meant I could quickly create the animatic and focus on of
planning aspects that needed more time. In order to create a
checklist of what needed to be done and what time to be
completed by
4. I used Microsoft word to create a table for this
which meant I could stay roughly on track of
schedule. We used WordPress as our blog to
keep all our finding together. This meant we could
document all our research and analysis of our
work. For example, we conducted a questionnaire
for our music theory research and asked 30
participants of three age groups to fill it out. We
then recorded the results on the blog and
analysis the results. this really helped with our
initial ideas and gave us inspiration towards our
music video.
5. For both AS and A2 we used a Canon HD camera.
Which we did have a few technical difficulties with this
camera but due to lack of funds we could not change
the camera in our A2 film and had to use it again.
However it was a alright camera and just about did
the job. For A2 we also used my phone for an
underwater scene in a sink. Where we had our boxer
character wash his face in the sink where the Phone
was recording from under the water. For our digipak in
A2 we chose to use an Go pro which was really
effective and gave really good quality and a nice fish
eye effect to it. This integrated nice into our theme
and genre. We were able to borrow the Go pro of a
friend which meant it didn't cost anything to get this
6. I used I movie in our AS production to upload our
footage and edit it. This was a simple and easy to
use. However, it was too simplistic and for A2 we
decided to yours Final Cut which was more
advanced and meant we could do better cuts,
transitions and effects. Such as in our music
video I did a few overlay shoots and also masked
two shots in the same location over top so it had
the character in two places in the same shot. I
really liked this shot as it was something id never
done before and was effective at what we were
aiming for. Which was to portray the rapper
working hard grinding away which the shot
7. For my evaluation, we used the same techs again
such as we incorporated YouTube into this. We
uploaded our music video onto YouTube then got
Audience feedback of our finished product. Word
press also helped in our evaluation as I could
asses my project and look back at our planning
and research. This meant when evaluation I had
a clear base to find my previous work which
meant it was easy to evaluate all in one place.
