Caribbean Tuesday Character Analysis
Any day is a good day to visit the gang at Bears on Fairfield but Tuesdays are especially good. Not
only is it $2 Tuesday with wells, wines and assorted beer, it is also Caribbean Tuesdays with the
infamous Gordon Nurse cooking traditional island food and playing some island jams. If you ve never
met Gordon, you are indeed missing a treat. Character doesn t even begin to describe him. You know
how we all have that one family member that we love dearly, but at times, they make us walk away
mid sentence? That is Gordon! You will laugh, shake your head and walk away all at the same time. In
addition to keeping you entertained from just general conversation, Gordon whips up some mean
dishes in Bears kitchen. For Caribbean Tuesday, Gordon normally

Themes Of Love And Duty, By Ernest Hemingway For Whom The...
The novel by Ernest Hemingway For Whom The Bell Tolls describes and analyzes the role of the
theme of love. The novel follows the events chronologically, and portrays the change and evolution in
the character, and understanding the feeling love in the life of protagonist Robert Jordan. He is
assigned to blow up the bridge and meet Spanish partisans by the general Golz. However, it will also
dwell on the other character Maria within the narrative of love and duty, and upon the way, these
concepts are actualized through their presence and actions in the novel. An author develops the ideas
of love throughout the book, and whether his portrayal was sufficient and realistic. Robert Jordan
transforms from a man imbued with the duty to a man with the duty to a man who fall in love and has
a duty to protect Maria. At the beginning of the novel, Robert Jordan for the first time strikes the
reader as the man of duty, first and foremost. His commander in chief entrusts him with a mission, and
he is not only ready, but also willing to discharge his mission by any means necessary, Jordan is tough,
principled, heroic and doomed. Yet he carries out his assignment (Susan). Such devotion is explained
by the fact that he believes the successful fulfillment of his labor to be crucial for the advancement of
their case the war against fascism. He has a duty to blow up the bridge and he is all devoted to this
operation. He understands that the success of the republican troops depends

Different Types Of Nerve Cells
Nerve Cells
Nerve cells are crucial to all living organisms because they serve as a messenger in the different parts
of the body. There are three different types of nerve cells (neurons) sensory neurons, motor neurons,
and association neurons. All three of these types come together in order to allow the body to function
properly. Without neurons the body wouldn t have the ability to know when there is illumination or
warmth in or outside the body, know how to perform functions in the other parts of the body (such as
muscles),or have these two things work together to know what the other is doing.
Sensory neurons have importance because they allow your body to have the five physical senses,
(smell,touch,taste,sight,and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One important sensory neuron that everyone is very familiar with is tastebuds. Tastebuds are
extremely sensitive neurons that have a built in pH detector. That is why the more acidic something is
the more sour it taste and when sodium ions increase this is what makes food have a salty taste.
Sensory neurons are crucial to the body for maintaining homeostasis by providing organisms with
skills that we need.
The second kind of neuron that is also very important to organisms is motor neurons. Motor neurons
are responsible for the movement of organisms. If our body didn t form motor neurons we wouldn t
have the ability to talk, eat, life, drink, walk, and any other kind of simple movements. According to
Daniel Liden, a freelance journalist, motor neurons directly or indirectly controls the contraction or
relaxation of muscles (Liden, para 1.) Motor neurons are also sometimes referred to as efferent
neurons. Motor neurons bring information made by the central nervous system to the different muscles
in the body. There are three different kinds of motor neurons. The three different kinds are somatic,
specific visceral, and general visceral. Somatic motor neurons are used for forming skeletal muscles
and movement in the body. Specific visceral motor neurons are important in vertebrates for the
movement of neck muscles and facial muscles. Specific visceral neurons are important to sea animals
for the movement of gills. The last kind of motor neurons, general visceral, are

The Government Should Not Control What Children Eat Essay
Childhood obesity is an epidemic in the United States, nearly twenty percent of children between the
ages of 6 and 11 are clinically obese; however the government has no place trying to control this.
(CDC, 2008) The current administration over steps its authority moving beyond the control of
federally funded school lunches and into oversight of privately owned vending machines in public
schools. Major corporations are being bullied into censoring their advertisement exposure to younger
children so that the government won t impose their own regulations. It is a parent s responsibility and
right to educate their children and control what they eat. The Federal government should not try to
control what children eat by imposing regulations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Snack machines are big business in the public school system. They are privately owned and serviced,
in order to be placed in schools the vending companies enter into contracts where a portion of profits
are provided back to the school. These profits often play a big role in an already tight school budget;
they pay for necessities such as copies of student handouts and other teaching aids. Where the problem
begins is that the Let s Move program authorizes the United States Department of Agriculture to set
standards for all foods regularly sold in schools including vending machines and al la cart lunch lines.
Neither of the affected receives funding from the program, making this a controversial issue of the
federal government setting controls on state funded schools. The federal government needs to stay out
of state run programs, especially when it can affect funding which directly relates to our children s
education.
Aside from federal restrictions on food in public schools some states have allowed their administration
to create and enforce rules that are not their place to be making. At Little Village Academy, a public
school in Chicago the principal Elsa Carmona established a rule that banned lunches made at home
and drinks from home at school, the only acceptation is for children with allergies. This ruling is an
attempt to force the children to eat the

The Marxist Theory Is The Political And Economic Theories...
The Marxist theory is the political and economic theories originated by German theorists: Karl Marx
and Friedrich Engels. Marx was born in Germany in 1818 and studied philosophy and law. He was
among many the most important authors of sociology and was best known as the father of Marxism
(McIntyre, 21). Along with Friedrich Engels, he wrote and published The Communist Manifesto. This
document helped shape the revolutions that reconstructed much of the world with over the course of
the next century. According to Marx the most important thing about society is the way a society is
organized to produce goods and services, also known as mode of production. The relationships among
people and people s relationships to the forces of production are how decisions were made about what
to do with the outcomes. The Marxist theory recognizes several typical modes of production and
characteristics of different periods in our past history (McIntyre, pg28) These modes of production
includes: Primitive communism which had no categorized social class structures or capital growth,
Asiatic mode which is allegedly the original form of society where small groups removes social
additions through violence directed at settled or unsettled band groups within a domain. Ancient mode
is when property is the control of the individual, the forces of production connected with this mode is
the widespread use of animals in agriculture, and advanced trade networks. Feudalism the property is

American Hospital Corporation
Introduction Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) is a proprietary hospital management company.
The company has been following an acquisitive strategy by taking over hospital companies and not for
profit hospitals. The firm is also considering expanding into new health service areas like home health
care and outpatient surgery. The company is at a crossroads with regard to its financial goals; HCA
currently faces the likelihood of adverse changes to the Medicare/Medicaid policy which could strain
the company s profitability along with a substantial increase in financial leverage risks coupled with
an increase in required expenditure to reap the effect of prospective operating synergies like
economies of scale and scope from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because there is a lack of growth opportunities through acquisition and construction of new
hospitals. HCA is expected to mature and become a cash cow by about 1987. At this stage, it is
expected to incur limited capital expenditure. Instead, the company can be milked continuously from
its existing operations and is expected to generate cash in excess of the amount required to maintain
the business. Likely impact of proposed changes to prospective reimbursement One of the significant
impacts of proposed changes to prospective reimbursement is that hospitals will be paid based on
expected fixed rates rather than actually incurred costs. Hospitals will no longer be paid using cost
plus basis (costs plus a certain percentage of profits based on costs). As a result of fixed rate payments
to hospitals, there will be more incentive for hospitals to reduce costs and improve efficiency in order
to maximise profits. The prospective reimbursement program will also result in hospitals not being
able to recoup full amount of allowable interest expense. Instead, they can only recoup the interest tax
shield portion of the interest expense. Investors

Emerging Markets And Developing Economies
Over the years the global economy has seen a rise in so called emerging markets . These are
developing economies which have exceeded economic performance in respect to their developing
counterparts. These economies are newly industrialized and are on their way to becoming developed
economies but have not yet reached that status. The more common and likely heard developing
economies consists of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) followed by Mexico, South Korea,
Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia. Developed nations (MEDC) include the westernised countries
such as the U.S, the U.K and Japan. In 1999, Dr. Kvint published this definition: Emerging market
country is a society transitioning from a dictatorship to a free market oriented economy, with
increasing economic freedom, gradual integration with the Global Marketplace and with other
members of the GEM (Global Emerging Market), an expanding middle class, improving standards of
living, social stability and tolerance, as well as an increase in cooperation with multilateral institutions
This essay will locate the common characteristics that emerging markets share.
The first characteristic is that they share a below average income per capita. This means that the
average person earns less in comparison to rest of the world. It can also be compared to cities, towns
or a given population but for this case the total population will be looked at to give a national average.
The income per capita is an important point as it

Buddhist Crisis
The Buddhist Crisis as a Turning Point in the Vietnam War
Anonymous
March 24, 2013
There were several events during the Vietnam War that can be considered turning points , which can
be described as the occurrence of an event that changed the course of history. One such event was the
Buddhist crisis in 1963. The Buddhists of South Vietnam had experienced decades of religious
persecution during French colonialism that continued with the Catholic government, which was
backed by the United States (Toong, 2008). The demonstrations, protests and self immolations that
followed as a result of this religious persecution and the media coverage it generated encouraged the
Kennedy administration to back a coup d état against Ngo ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Diem s reaction to this event was denying responsibility and he put the blame on communists. Despite
repeated encouragement from the United States government to reconcile with the Buddhists, Diem
remained unyielding and asserted that there was no presence of religious persecution (Toong, 2008).
The height of the Buddhist crisis was reached when Thich Quang Duc ignited himself and burned to
death in as a protest in the street in front of a large crowd in Saigon (Moss, 2010). The appalling
images of the self immolation of Thich Quang Duc were spread throughout the world by international
media coverage. Demonstrations by the Buddhists and retaliation by the GVN continued to escalate to
a point where the United States could no longer support the Diem government, which despite financial
assistance that amounted to over $1,000,000 per day and the support of the American military, refused
to cooperate (Toong, 2008). Subsequently, and dependent on Diem s lack of response to pressure from
the United States regarding the Buddhist crisis, the Kennedy administration decided to participate in a
coup to overthrow him (Toong, 2008). The final straw was the pagoda raids on August 21 and Diem s
declaration of martial law with threats to shoot and kill Americans on the

Taking a Look at Neurotransmitter Release
Neurotransmitter release is a key step to neuro transmission, in the middle of the 20th century; it has
been clearly revealed that chemical signals transfer the great majority of the information in the brain.
Therefore, different neurochemistry approaches have been emerged to investigate neurotransmitter
release process. Later, introducing a radiolabeled precursor into the CNS and measuring the
accumulation of a radiolabeled product have made critical improving and developing in vitro
preparations approaches including isolated nerve ending fractions or synaptosomes, cultured cells and
tissue slices. However, in this study we focused on the use of brain slices, as well as intact structure
giving a close picture of th in vivos situation. The tissue slice method was introduced by Warburg in
1920s to investigate the energy metabolism of tissues slice and Henry McIlwain extended it to study
brain metabolism. Currently, slices structure is an accepted technique for studying many aspects of
neurobiology. Slices are made using a mechanical device, such as a tissue chopper or vibrato me.
Subsequently, they are immediately transferred into cold carbongenated iso osmotic salt solution.
Tissue slices are used with and without radiolabeled tracers dependent on the case of studies.
Subsequently they are transferred into small chamber and superfused 1 hour with fresh carbongenated
medium to achieve stability. Following equilibration slices can then be exposed to chemical and/or

Summary Of Calling Blue And On He Had Cellphone
Summary: Virginia Heffernan wrote a television review named, Calling Blue: And On That Farm He
had Cellphone. Heffernan claims that there is an issue over how children television series only create
shows that are not educational for children and are to simplicity. The author uses the show, Blue s
room, as an example of how bad children s shows have become. By using the Blue s Room, the author
supports the claim by writing over how the new show s first episode was basically demonstrating
children how farmers wear overalls while they are doing tasks such as milking a cow and gathering
eggs. Heffernan thinks that this is pointless as many children may not even want to become a farmer,
let alone they might not even want to milk a cow in their

My Family Social Unit
Culture is the learned set of beliefs, values, norms, and material good shared by a group of members
(Thompson 62). Our society is made up of several different units. These units are economy, family,
religion, education, and social events. The traditional family social unit is the unit that I chose to
observe. Many different factors contribute to the culture of my family. The family unit culture consists
of material and nonmaterial aspects. The culture of a social unit can be impacted by many different
variables. Some of these variables include beliefs, values, and religion. My family s culture can be
expressed through symbols. A bouquet of flowers represents my family. The bouquet is full of flowers
with different characteristics, but they all come together to make one unit. The values of my family
also play a big part in the family social unit. The most important value is responsibility. My family and
everyone in it depend on the fact that everyone has their own responsibilities they need to take care of
to continue to make the unit function. Another contributor to my families culture are beliefs. My
family unit believes in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This belief brings my family together. Special
practices also play a part in the culture of any social unit. As far as I know, my family does not partake
in that many special practices. One that I ve observed though, is how my family says a prayer to bless
our meals before we eat them. When observing the traditional

How The Six Respositions Of A Mentor
Each disposition highlights an important skill mentors must have and apply to their mentoring service.
Whether I was working on a worksheet with a student, or doing one on one reading with a mentee, I
easily found myself using each disposition. The dispositions I found myself using most often were
responsibility, flexibility, initiative, respect, reflection, and thoughtful and responsive listener. These
six dispositions are central in reaching mentees and mentoring successfully.
Responsibility means to be organized, to complete tasks on time, to be reliable, and to be proactive.
Responsibility is important because, as a mentor, I must be reliable. Once I form relationships with my
mentees, not only do they count on me to be there, but the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My critical cultural consciousness supports my belief to value diversity and treat all my mentees with
respect and equality. So often it is the lack of respect and understanding that discourages students.
When that happens at a young age, it is hard for students to recover. As I talked to the students, I
realized that some were embarrassed and acted out because they needed extra help. It is moments like
these when I realize just how much support and positivity these kids need, that I am grateful that my
positionality allows me to offer the students the help they need and deserve. There must continue to be
an increasing amount of diverse engagement in schools to give the students mentors that they can

The Great Depression Of 1929 Essay
It is almost nine decades since the outbreak of great depression of 1929 and it still haunts the economy
of America today. The Great Depression was a time of financial hardships and misery for the
Americans. America experienced a time of wreckage and terror. The Great Depression was not a
sudden collapse. Many events led up to the most traumatic economic period of modern times. World
War I, the Roaring Twenties and unequal distribution of wealth among the people were all origins of
the Great Depression but a specific cause to this disaster stills remains a mystery today. After World
War I ended Americans wanted a change in their country. Women wanted more rights and were given
the right to vote by 1920. Women became more independent and worked to help their family and ease
the burden of the men at house. Americans wanted to improve their country. Americans spent their
money on improving their roads, bridges and real estate. New technologies like refrigerators,
televisions, radios and cars were mass produced to make life easier. With the development of new
technologies accessibility were endless. Radios covered news; music and other forms of
entertainment, middle class were able to afford cars due to Henry Ford s method of assembly line.
Technology improved productivity in the manufacturing area to an extent that raised living standards
for many. Not every Americans were able to afford the latest appliances, in order to make this

Moral Character In The Great Gatsby
The Roaring Twenties was a gilded age. The flourishing economy and the lavish and carefree
mentality shrouds the immorality and corruption. The American Dream progressively becomes tainted
by materialism and individuals covet money to climb up the social ladder. Class divisions strictly
divided society and class disparity becomes apparent among the wealthy during the formation of the
old and new money . F. Scott Fitzgerald incorporates the elements of the 1920 s in Jay Gatsby of The
Great Gatsby. During the course of The Great Gatsby, Gatsby becomes the most immoral character
because Gatsby is willing to let go of his morals to ascend the social ladder. Gatsby becomes the least
moral character from his involvement with Meyer Wolfsheim. From his encounter with Wolfsheim,
Gatsby stepped into the business world. To demonstrate this, Wolfsheim tells Nick, I raised him up out
of nothing, right out the gutter... Right off he did some work for a client of mine up to Albany. We
were so thick like that in everything He held up two bulbous fingers, always together. I wonder if this
partnership had included the World Series transaction in 1919 (Fitzgerald, 179). According to Gatsby,
Wolfsheim is the individual that fixed the World Series. Since Wolfshiem stated that Gatsby and
Wolfsheim are always together, Nick wonders whether Gatsby had any involvement in the baseball
game. Gatsby is evidently involved in shady business, Wolfsheim is a gangster that decorates himself

A Day to Remember November 22, 1963 started off as any other day in the Simon household: Mary
Ann got up, went to feed the animals and grab some breakfast before heading to work at the
Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service Office. A normal day at work consists of working with
farmers. She would have to record which fields had corn, soybeans, wheat, or nothing. She would also
record how many acres of each crop was planted in which field. Around noon, she took her thirty
minute lunch break and came back to an unimaginable scene on the TV. She and her coworkers saw a

She thought that Lee Harvey Oswald did the whole act alone, but it is also a big conspiracy theory, so
she also thinks that more than one person would have to be behind the act. Some people think that one
person alone could not have shot the president and that there has to be someone else somewhere in
this tragedy. The main person of interest at the time was Lee Harvey because of his troublesome past
as well as five very convincing pieces of evidence. The rifle used was purchased under Oswalds name,
his palmprint was on the rifle, the fibers from the rifle were from his shirt used on the day of the
assassination, a photograph with Oswald holding the rifle, and the fact that he kept the rifle from the
time of purchase to his assassination ( Donovan, Robert). The Crime of the Century book agrees with

rifle, but an FBI expert testified that they probably did even though there is no way to tell if they for

Mr. Aux Go Better Than Everyone Else Meaning
A Dark Laugh: Roger Brown s Mr. Gotta Go Faster Than Anyone Else
Mr. Gotta Go Faster Than Anyone Else represents the simple yet dark humor of the late Roger Brown.
Brown painted this piece in 1986 during his first years of living in California after moving away from
Chicago. Brown was believed to be a social commentator by many in the late 1980 s because of the
way his art correlated with the events of the time, but he argues these claims by saying that his
artwork is simply a visual agenda (Calamities Conform to the Canvas). The artistic style of Brown
utilizes both bright and dull colors as well as simple figures to convey his messages and the reason he

Gotta go Faster Than Anyone Else is also a very important detail that requires attention. In 1986 when
the painting was made, Ronald Reagan was the president of the United States. Reagan was known to
not be a supporter of the Woman s Rights movement and it was the first time since the 1960 s that
many governing agencies that had to do with woman s rights were closed. Brown put Mr in the title of
the piece because it was mostly men who were chasing their dreams and being supported during the
era. The woman in the bright red car is screaming at the man because he was the one who was in
charge at the wheel and the one who made decisions between the two. Brown made the title of his
piece a striking one by making it carry an important meaning with the state of woman in America at

Dreamliner 787 Case Study
Boeing is the worlds largest aerospace company. While Boeing is known mostly known for their
commercial airplanes they also manufactures defense, space and security systems, military aircrafts,
weapons, satellites, electronic defense systems, launch systems and information and communication
systems (Boeing, 2013). In this case we are going to focus on the Dreamliner 787, and the problems
that came with the creation of it. The first Boeing 787 Dreamliner was delivered to Japan s ANA in
2011, nearly 40 months after the planned delivery date. The expected delivery was in May 2008, but
the fuel efficient 787 Dreamliner s manufacturing had become complicated due to multiple changes in
the design and supply chain implemented all at once. Far from the traditional manufacturing,
Dreamliner design consists of many new features like unique design, one piece fuselage, reduced
weight, 20% increase in fuel economy, and reduction in maintenance time. Apart from the changes in
design, another major difficulty was the company s global supply chain network. For the first time
ever Boeing outsourced two most critical parts fuselage and wings. Everything put together, the
complications kept increasing and so is the delay. At least when the plane finally the entered the
market years later design came out as expected, and there weren t any sacrifices to the design that had
to be made. The plane can hold from 210 250 passengers on routes of 7650 8200 nautical miles and

Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods( CISG ), which could help me to explore
the advantages and disadvantages of the delivery principle established by CISG in my dissertation.
Item 3 Journal Article
Juana C, The interplay between Incoterms and the CISG (2013) 32(1), Journal of Law Commerce 58
This article demonstrates that the CISG and Incoterms to some extent mutually supplement and
support each other in terms of passing of risk. Where the regulation provided by Incoterms is
inadequate, rules in CISG can supplement the Incoterm rules and vice versa. And these two
instructions both adopt the delivery principle. Therefore, in order to undertake a research about the
allocation of risk in my dissertation, it is better to combine CISG rules and trade terms in Incoterms
2010. In addition, by comparing CISG and Incoterms 2010, I could have the knowledge of similarity
on the risk rules that is both connecting the passing of risk to the transfer of physical possession, or at
least being placed in the position of having control over the goods. This article also expounded some
differences regarding risk allocation. For instance, the Incoterm rules revised the CISG s rules on

Mount Baker in Bellingham, Washington Essay
I decided for my project that I would spend the time researching Mount Baker. Mount Baker is located
about 30 miles east of Bellingham, Washington. The Cascade Mountain range extends over 140 miles
between Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, Canada. Mount Baker is a Stratovolcano, which is also
known as a composite volcano, it is also the highest peak in the North Cascades and the fifth highest
in the Cascade mountain range (Volcano Hazards Programs). Cities located near Mount Baker include
Abbotsford, British Columbia and Bellingham, Washington. The closest stream to the mountain is the
Nooksack River which runs near the west side of the mountain. On the southwest side of the mountain
is Baker Lake. I chose this area because it is a very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I looked out the window, I saw walls of rocks all over the place. I also saw a lot of good rock
exposure on the top of the mountain where the rock was to steep for the snow to stick to. You will
notice that Mount Baker has an abundance of all sorts of rocks. From the rocks I examined I observed
a lot of extrusive igneous rock, metamorphic rock and sedimentary rocks and you will find few places
where you can walk continuously from shale or basalt into well metamorphosed gneiss (Tabor
Haugerud). I observed rocks such as gabbro, shale, and types of extrusive and intrusive igneous rock
such as basalt. The ages of the rocks range from about as old as the mountain, which is about 140,000
years old.
Structures:
When you look at a topographic map of Mount Baker, you will notice many different structures and
interesting landforms. The first thing I noticed when I was observing the map were all the different
peaks within the mountain. From what I have been reading I have found two major faults that are
within Mount Baker. These two faults are the Straight Creek Fault and the Ross Lake Fault Zone;
these faults are thought to be primarily strike slip. In addition, on the geologic map you will notice the
Sherman Crater, which originated from a large hydrovolcanic explosion (Tabor, Haugerud, Hildreth,
Brown). This crater is responsible for many of Mount Bakers past lahars that have flowed down the
mountain and into Baker Lake. The pattern of hills, valleys, ridges, and

Nonmoral Nature Gould Summary
Throughout Nonmoral Nature , Gould explains that we need to look at nature without personifying it
or putting human values on it. He believes that those who approach a scientific situation with a pre
established view in mind are preventing the kind of objectivity and fairness that scientific examination
is supposed to produce. Gould explains that the existence of what seems to be evil in nature creates an
argument between scientists and creationists. Many phenomena that occur in nature seem to be wrong
or disturbing, and go against the idea that God creates everything and that everything is benevolent.

Pros And Cons Of Body Modification
Although body modification has some benefits the government should raise or create an age
restriction for body surgeries. In third grade, I learned that my uncle had died. A relative dying may
not particularly uncommon, but my story varies from others because I had not known my uncle
existed. The extent of my knowledge at the time was that my dad had 1 brother but he apparently had
2. My parents never told me about him because they didn;t want me to hang around somebody who
used drugs because of the possible influence it could have on me. My uncle s drug addiction began in
his teens. He ended up stealing stuff in order to pay for them, unbeknownst to his parents and my dad.
I think this perfectly illustrates the lapse in judgement of teens because my uncle made the choice to
do drugs once which at the time may have seemed cool but if he thought it through, maybe he never
would have actually used them. If he was older at that time, he may have thought his decision through
more than he did and he would still be alive today. The major judgement issues in teens result in much
more than just a drug addiction but they may result in a teen with a completely surgically changed
body. In order to prevent this, having an age restriction presents itself as the only solution. Although
some use body modification for an outlet in which they express themselves, the government must
create an age limit of 21 for the procedures.
Granted that body modification has certain drawbacks, it does

Detailed Timeline Of The Periodic Table And The Major...
Preliminary Chemistry
Assessment Task 1
Jessica Kuang 11CH3
Question 1: (4 marks)
Construct a timeline to summarise the development of the Periodic Table and the major contributions
made by notable scientists (up to G Seaborg) Question 2: (8 marks)
(a) The elements lithium, sodium and potassium formed one of the original triads used to show that
elements could be grouped . What scientific evidence did scientists have to justify this grouping of
elements?
Johann Dobereiner, a German chemist, suggested the grouping of elements with similar properties into
clusters of three triads. He discovered that when arranged in ascending atomic mass, in the case of
lithium, sodium and potassium, sodium s atomic mass was approximately the arithmetic mean of
lithium and potassium. There was also a correlation between the atomic numbers, (Li 3, Sodium 11,
Potassium 19) which showed the mean of the lowest and highest atomic numbers equalled the atomic
number of the middle element.
(b) Identify two other triads which were identified during the early construction of the Periodic Table.
The other two triads are sulfur, selenium and tellurium and chlorine, bromine and iodine.
(c) In 1864, John Newlands observed that the properties of the known elements varied periodically
with their atomic masses. He saw a pattern which reminded him of the musical scale and published his
findings as the law of octaves
(i) Why were atomic masses (weights), not atomic

The Causes Of The Korean War
Korea existed under Japanese control from 1910 until the end of World War II in 1945. After the war,
the Korean Peninsula was divided into two states along the 38th parallel. The Soviet union controlled
the communist north while the United States controlled the nationalist and anti communist south.
Soviet general Terentii Shtykov established the Provisional People s Committee for North Korea in
1946 and Kim Il sung became chairman. Shtykov broke North Korea s stratified class system,
nationalized critical industries, and as a result many fled to the south. Later that year, South Korean
citizens resisted the rule of the Allied Military Government and continued to resist despite violent
opposition until they declared their statehood in May 1948. Shortly after this, The Democratic People
s Republic of Korea was established, and Kim Il sung became the premier leader. Shtykov suspected
President Syngman Rhee of South Korea was planning an attack on North Korea, and so with the help
of Jospeh Stalin, North Korea launched an attack on South Korea on June 25th, 1950. This started the
Korean War, which was essentially a proxy war between America and the Soviets. The United Nations
force (led by the United States) assisted South Korea in the war. China assisted North Korea, and
would continue to follow this pattern of allying with North Korea until modern day. The war ended on
July 27th, 1953. An agreement was signed that restored the original boundary along the 38th parallel.

Winesburg Ohio Critical Analysis Essay
Written by Sherwood Anderson in 1919, Winesburg, Ohio, a collection of short stories, allows us to
enter the alternately complex, lonely, joyful, and strange lives of the inhabitants of the small town of
Winesburg, Ohio. While each character finds definition through their role in the community, we are
witness to the individual struggle each faces in trying to reconcile their secret life within. A perfect
example of two characters are Alice Hindman and Enoch Robinson. The loneliness and illusion that
encompass the lives of Alice Hindman and Enoch Robinson are the result of the discrepancy between
their own capacity for intimacy and affection and the inability of others to truly understand them. ...

Alice holds on to Ned and his promised love, even though was full of illusions, as an absolute truth.
I want to avoid being so much alone. If I am not careful I will grow unaccustomed to being around
people. (Anderson 118). Thus she joins new groups and attempts to recreate ties to her community.
However, she is unable to pass beyond her limiting life denying truth. A perfect example of this is not
even considering any type of relationship with Will Hurley, who she had met at a Church group. Alice
reaches the point of loneliness by the end which had been described in the beginning because,
regardless of her attempts to move on, her search from communal bonds and humanity had been
fruitless .
In the short story, Loneliness , Enoch Robinson also lives a life of illusions and loneliness. The story
of Enoch is in fact the story of a room almost more than it is the story of a man. (Anderson 168). The
room and its inhabitants are applied to Enoch and his mysterious, illusional character. As Enoch grew
up in Winesburg, his mother s house lay dark because all the window blinds were kept closed. Enoch
was described as a quiet, dense child. Enoch s home symbolizes his personality and his outlook
toward others. Enoch would walk top school with his nose in a book, not seeing the passing traffic.
The darkness of his home is reflected in his character. As Enoch moves to New

Rwanda Genocide Sociology
The term genocide encompasses some of the darkest times in the history of the world. There is no
definitive answer as to what drives one sect of society to try and eliminate another based purely on
their cultural, racial, national or political affiliation either by birth or by choice. During World War II,
between six and eleven million Jewish people were systematically exterminated by the Nazis.
Although it was the most prolific of genocides, it was not the first or the last of this atrocity to occur.
In 1994, genocide occurred in the African nation of Rwanda. At the time it happened, the world paid
little heed while almost a million people were killed. After the incident, the reaction of the United
Nations came under scrutiny as researchers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This had to do with the peacekeepers that were sent to Rwanda, and how long they should stay there.
The UN wanted to pull out troops, but they did not want to be hated. During the time the plan was
being approved President Clinton did not want to commit any forces to Rwanda. Because of this, the
US was scrutinized by the media and asked why they said no, but they did try to help clean up the
situation. Althorugh troops were sent, they did not arrive until the middle of July. Though they were
late, this did help to receive any other refugees to get away and to clam the genocide. But only fifty
US vehicles were really sent to help them get out, the extra troops were sent by the UN Secretary
General for peacekeeping duties along with 200 artillery pieces for a thousand men. Thanks to all the
plans that had been approved and suggested by others to appease the situation thought many have died
a few were saved thanks to UN efforts and as all know thans to a certain owner of a hotel who
convinced a UN officer to take refugees out of Rwanda despite the risk of taking them out. There were
many road blocks that were swarming with Hutus trying to stop them , but it was too late and because
of this many more lives were saved so the UN sending peacekeepers actually saved lives
CONCLUSION In conclusion, the Rwandan genocide clearly stemmed from decades of feuds and led
to the death of over 800,000 people. Some people think the genocide could have been prevented if the
United States and the United Nations would have done more sooner. Looking at the history of

Book Of Sand Allusion
Allusions and time are common elements of magic realism in Jorge Borges s stories. Throughout
Book of Sand, Borges makes references to a variety of things outside the short story to enhance its
depth. He also includes cyclical time to give Book of Sand a background story and to leave readers
wondering what will happen to the unusual literature. Guayaquil alludes to the Guayaquil conference
in which Simón Bolívar and José de San Martin debated over the future government of Peru. This
event recycles into two historians meeting to decide who will get to publish letters written by Bolívar
himself. Borges makes allusions in both Book of Sand and Guayaquil to let the reader think about
outside influences. Book of Sand contains light allusions that

The Church during the Middle Ages
The Middle Ages were a time that revolved around Christianity and converting or killing off all those
who were not Christian. As a result, strict laws were put in place that prohibited the practices that
weren t Christian. This also meant anything that was pagan was prohibited and punishable by death.
There were many practices that would be considered pagan, but the main ones of concern were the
things the Church did not approve. Of the things the Church did not approve magic, like witchcraft,
and heresy were two of the main things that were forbidden by both state and Church law. The main
reason the Church wanted to block off magic practices was to stay in power (or keep its power). This
is supported by the following: the influence of the Church on the kings resulted in the passing of civil
laws against magic; the Inquisition making sure people did not engage in magical practices; the
Church leaders downplaying witchcraft; and the persecution of the Knights Templar and followers of
John Wycliffe (who led the movement against papal authority and the clergy).
Magic originated from pagan roots in the Ancient period when Christianity did not exist. It did not
involve devils or demons, as the Church branded it later on and is often portrayed currently.
Witchcraft originally was just a form of folk magic that would be practiced as a normal routine, like a
prayer, or used for good luck. People made charms and potions to help them do something in their
lives. Whether it is for

Assemblage Art And The Arts At Ohio State University
Assemblage art is the process of an artist creating a piece of work out of objects and materials rather
than just paints and brushes. Assemblage art interests me more because of the history of the materials
before it was created into a work being displayed. The specific artist used other s scraps and trash to
assemble a piece of art greater than both people combined and the ending product comes out to be
something a lot more significant than trash . Although I don t know much about assemblage art and
the process of it, I can interpret it for hopefully what the artist wanted me to and I can find the
significance within it. The piece of work I chose to analyze comes from the Wexner Center for the
Arts here at Ohio State University. This piece of art was made in 1988 and comes from the Terri and
Michael Smooke Collection, its name is The Last Supper. Though I didn t learn about assemblage, I
was exposed to the relevance of one of the most historically significant paintings by Leonardo da
Vinci, The Last Supper. This late 15th century painting is a religion icon and depicts Jesus Christ and
his 12 disciples at their last supper before Jesus was sent off to get crucified. I believe the piece of art I
analyzed was clearly inspired by Leonardo s The Last Supper due to the same name and key
similarities I found in the painting. For starters, my painting doesn t have any human figures
represented in it but instead just silverware, plates , and sardine cans. The sardine cans near

The Center For Disease Control And Prevention
Literature Review (The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015) points to many sectors of
society including families, communities, schools, medical care providers, and the media as sources of
influence on dietary and physical activity behaviors. In today s society, we are seeing a trend of major
influence coming from many different types of media. An example of this is social media platforms
like Instagram and Facebook. Where people will post photos, usually with a filter to show their target
audience that they are happy with their life, and not showing their real heartache. Another example of
influence coming from media is from the Hollywood industry, in which to be successful in that type of

(Barge Schlueter, 2004, p. 237) describes memorable messages as embedded with assumptions about
who can speak, about what and when, through that medium, and with what intent and these discourses
structure a set of obligations and opportunities for relationships and identities. Knapp states that
memorable messages have three different qualities that make a good memorable message. To start,
(Knapp et al., 1981) states that First, memorable messages often come from someone who is older and
of higher status, Most campaigns will use a spokesperson who is well known to the public; an
example of this is a celebrity putting their name towards a cause. These spokespeople are often the
campaign s biggest supporters both financially and motivational. (Miles A, et. al., 2001) describes that
research into adult interventions shows that those who take part in mass media health campaigns are
women from higher socioeconomic groups who are already engaging in better health practices.
Second, memorable messages are often brief oral injunctions that prescribe rules of conduct for
solving a personal problem, (Knapp et al., 1981). These would be more explicit directives, such as

The Pros And Cons Of The Crusades
The Crusades were a series of wars inspired by conflicting religious ideologies, specifically between
Christians and Muslims. A series being, that between the years 1096 and 1291, nine major military
expeditions occurred. Christian Muslim interactions between the 1000 1500 centuries were mostly
negative then positive. The justification for war included securing and gaining control of the holy
lands or territories sacred to both groups (Damascus, The River Jordan, Jerusalem, and numerous
others) and to diffuse or universalize their religious ideologies to those living in the eastern
hemisphere. Jerusalem was considered the holiest of all sites, because it was significantly important to
both religions, in different ways. To Christians, Jerusalem represents; the place of birth, ministry,
crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the Savior or Messiah to Christianity. However, to
Muslims, Jerusalem houses the Al Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest site in Islam), in which they believe
Muhammad was transported to during the Night Journey (a physical and spiritual journey) from the
Sacred Mosque in Mecca. Islamic hero or leader of the Crusades, Saladin, is credited with re
conquesting Jerusalem from the Christians, uniting Muslim fractions and states, while enabling and
promoting Islamic faith and practices to exist in Jerusalem. Saladin was born in 1138, to a military
family, in Tikrit (modern day Iraq). He gained his dominance among ancient civilizations through his

The Similarities Of Jacob And Esau
When Jacob and Esau were born, they were extremely different despite being twins. Esau was robust
and red headed while Jacob was meek and small. When the time came for her to give birth, there were
twin boys in her womb. The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment;
so they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau s heel; so he
was named Jacob, (Genesis 25:19 34). Jacob was a trickster. He covered himself with the hide of a
lamb to mimic his brothers appearance and take his blessing as the first born. So Jacob went out and
got the young goats for his mother. Rebekah took them and prepared a delicious meal, just the way
Isaac liked it. Then she took Esau s favorite clothes,

The Importance Of Ancient Egypt
Egypt has fascinated a multitude of people for a millennia. Many people today travel to Egypt to tour
the famous pyramids, the Sphinx, tombs, mummies, and to learn about the people and culture of
Egypt. Museum exhibits throughout the world, movies and plays such as Antony and Cleopatra by
Shakespeare, and even model versions off the pyramids such as those that can be found in Las Vegas;
are just a few examples of the ways in which people have brought ancient Egypt back to the limelight.
The interest in ancient Egypt is referred to as Egyptomania, and it is defined as being the fascination
of ancient Egypt typically by Europeans. This mania is often attributed to beginning with Napoleon s
campaign into Egypt in the years 1798 1801. But this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The temple of Isis at Philae would have made a very impressive and lasting impression on tourists
including Romans. In addition to this Romans brought back various objects that would have come
from the festival as well such as statuettes, papyri scrolls, and canopic jars which would have
reminded them of their time in Egypt at the temple. The impression, knowledge, and souvenirs that the
Romans brought back with them from Egypt influenced their own architecture, specifically in the case
of the temple of Isis at Pompeii. The inclusion and discovery and of Egyptian characteristics found in
Italian manufactured objects is referred to as aegyptiaca, and items such as wall paintings and
sculptures are been found throughout the Roman Empire. This Roman fascination with Egypt can be
classified as being the same if not similar to what scholars consider the European fascination of Egypt
as being Egyptomania. The difference in the case of Rome is that the fascination seems to have been
limited to architecture and art, whereas modern Egyptomania focuses on a revival of all aspects of
Egyptian culture. There seem to be three main reasons for the appearance of Egyptian motifs to have
made an appearance in Rome: to remind the people of the vastness of the Empire, to make a
connection to the royal court, and to participate in the cult of Isis. The temple of Isis at Pompeii is an
example of aegyptiaca when considering the unusual

  • 3. Themes Of Love And Duty, By Ernest Hemingway For Whom The... The novel by Ernest Hemingway For Whom The Bell Tolls describes and analyzes the role of the theme of love. The novel follows the events chronologically, and portrays the change and evolution in the character, and understanding the feeling love in the life of protagonist Robert Jordan. He is assigned to blow up the bridge and meet Spanish partisans by the general Golz. However, it will also dwell on the other character Maria within the narrative of love and duty, and upon the way, these concepts are actualized through their presence and actions in the novel. An author develops the ideas of love throughout the book, and whether his portrayal was sufficient and realistic. Robert Jordan transforms from a man imbued with the duty to a man with the duty to a man who fall in love and has a duty to protect Maria. At the beginning of the novel, Robert Jordan for the first time strikes the reader as the man of duty, first and foremost. His commander in chief entrusts him with a mission, and he is not only ready, but also willing to discharge his mission by any means necessary, Jordan is tough, principled, heroic and doomed. Yet he carries out his assignment (Susan). • 4. Different Types Of Nerve Cells Nerve Cells Nerve cells are crucial to all living organisms because they serve as a messenger in the different parts of the body. There are three different types of nerve cells (neurons) sensory neurons, motor neurons, and association neurons. All three of these types come together in order to allow the body to function properly. Without neurons the body wouldn t have the ability to know when there is illumination or warmth in or outside the body, know how to perform functions in the other parts of the body (such as muscles),or have these two things work together to know what the other is doing. Sensory neurons have importance because they allow your body to have the five physical senses, (smell, touch, taste, sight, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One important sensory neuron that everyone is very familiar with is tastebuds. Tastebuds are extremely sensitive neurons that have a built in pH detector. That is why the more acidic something is the more sour it taste and when sodium ions increase this is what makes food have a salty taste. Sensory neurons are crucial to the body for maintaining homeostasis by providing organisms with skills that we need. The second kind of neuron that is also very important to organisms is motor neurons. Motor neurons are responsible for the movement of organisms. If our body didn t form motor neurons we wouldn t have the ability to talk, eat, life, drink, walk, and any other kind of simple movements. According to Daniel Liden, a freelance journalist, motor neurons directly or indirectly controls the contraction or relaxation of muscles (Liden, para 1.) Motor neurons are also sometimes referred to as efferent neurons. Motor neurons bring information made by the central nervous system to the different muscles in the body. There are three different kinds of motor neurons. The three different kinds are somatic, specific visceral, and general visceral. Somatic motor neurons are used for forming skeletal muscles and movement in the body. Specific visceral motor neurons are important in vertebrates for the movement of neck muscles and facial muscles. Specific visceral neurons are important to sea animals for the movement of gills. The last kind of motor neurons, general visceral, are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Government Should Not Control What Children Eat Essay Childhood obesity is an epidemic in the United States, nearly twenty percent of children between the ages of 6 and 11 are clinically obese; however the government has no place trying to control this. (CDC, 2008) The current administration over steps its authority moving beyond the control of federally funded school lunches and into oversight of privately owned vending machines in public schools. Major corporations are being bullied into censoring their advertisement exposure to younger children so that the government won t impose their own regulations. It is a parent s responsibility and right to educate their children and control what they eat. The Federal government should not try to control what children eat by imposing regulations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Snack machines are big business in the public school system. They are privately owned and serviced, in order to be placed in schools the vending companies enter into contracts where a portion of profits are provided back to the school. These profits often play a big role in an already tight school budget; they pay for necessities such as copies of student handouts and other teaching aids. Where the problem begins is that the Let s Move program authorizes the United States Department of Agriculture to set standards for all foods regularly sold in schools including vending machines and al la cart lunch lines. Neither of the affected receives funding from the program, making this a controversial issue of the federal government setting controls on state funded schools. The federal government needs to stay out of state run programs, especially when it can affect funding which directly relates to our children s education. Aside from federal restrictions on food in public schools some states have allowed their administration to create and enforce rules that are not their place to be making. At Little Village Academy, a public school in Chicago the principal Elsa Carmona established a rule that banned lunches made at home and drinks from home at school, the only acceptation is for children with allergies. This ruling is an attempt to force the children to eat the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Marxist Theory Is The Political And Economic Theories... The Marxist theory is the political and economic theories originated by German theorists: Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Marx was born in Germany in 1818 and studied philosophy and law. He was among many the most important authors of sociology and was best known as the father of Marxism (McIntyre, 21). Along with Friedrich Engels, he wrote and published The Communist Manifesto. This document helped shape the revolutions that reconstructed much of the world with over the course of the next century. According to Marx the most important thing about society is the way a society is organized to produce goods and services, also known as mode of production. The relationships among people and people s relationships to the forces of production are how decisions were made about what to do with the outcomes. The Marxist theory recognizes several typical modes of production and characteristics of different periods in our past history (McIntyre, pg28) These modes of production includes: Primitive communism which had no categorized social class structures or capital growth, Asiatic mode which is allegedly the original form of society where small groups removes social additions through violence directed at settled or unsettled band groups within a domain. Ancient mode is when property is the control of the individual, the forces of production connected with this mode is the widespread use of animals in agriculture, and advanced trade networks. • 7. American Hospital Corporation Introduction Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) is a proprietary hospital management company. The company has been following an acquisitive strategy by taking over hospital companies and not for profit hospitals. The firm is also considering expanding into new health service areas like home health care and outpatient surgery. The company is at a crossroads with regard to its financial goals; HCA currently faces the likelihood of adverse changes to the Medicare/Medicaid policy which could strain the company s profitability along with a substantial increase in financial leverage risks coupled with an increase in required expenditure to reap the effect of prospective operating synergies like economies of scale and scope from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because there is a lack of growth opportunities through acquisition and construction of new hospitals. HCA is expected to mature and become a cash cow by about 1987. At this stage, it is expected to incur limited capital expenditure. Instead, the company can be milked continuously from its existing operations and is expected to generate cash in excess of the amount required to maintain the business. Likely impact of proposed changes to prospective reimbursement One of the significant impacts of proposed changes to prospective reimbursement is that hospitals will be paid based on expected fixed rates rather than actually incurred costs. Hospitals will no longer be paid using cost plus basis (costs plus a certain percentage of profits based on costs). As a result of fixed rate payments to hospitals, there will be more incentive for hospitals to reduce costs and improve efficiency in order to maximise profits. The prospective reimbursement program will also result in hospitals not being able to recoup full amount of allowable interest expense. Instead, they can only recoup the interest tax shield portion of the interest expense. Investors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These are developing economies which have exceeded economic performance in respect to their developing counterparts. These economies are newly industrialized and are on their way to becoming developed economies but have not yet reached that status. The more common and likely heard developing economies consists of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) followed by Mexico, South Korea, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia. Developed nations (MEDC) include the westernised countries such as the U.S, the U.K and Japan. In 1999, Dr. Kvint published this definition: Emerging market country is a society transitioning from a dictatorship to a free market oriented economy, with increasing economic freedom, gradual integration with the Global Marketplace and with other members of the GEM (Global Emerging Market), an expanding middle class, improving standards of living, social stability and tolerance, as well as an increase in cooperation with multilateral institutions This essay will locate the common characteristics that emerging markets share. The first characteristic is that they share a below average income per capita. This means that the average person earns less in comparison to rest of the world. It can also be compared to cities, towns or a given population but for this case the total population will be looked at to give a national average. • 9. Buddhist Crisis The Buddhist Crisis as a Turning Point in the Vietnam War Anonymous March 24, 2013 There were several events during the Vietnam War that can be considered turning points , which can be described as the occurrence of an event that changed the course of history. One such event was the Buddhist crisis in 1963. The Buddhists of South Vietnam had experienced decades of religious persecution during French colonialism that continued with the Catholic government, which was backed by the United States (Toong, 2008). The demonstrations, protests and self immolations that followed as a result of this religious persecution and the media coverage it generated encouraged the Kennedy administration to back a coup d état against Ngo ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Diem s reaction to this event was denying responsibility and he put the blame on communists. Despite repeated encouragement from the United States government to reconcile with the Buddhists, Diem remained unyielding and asserted that there was no presence of religious persecution (Toong, 2008). The height of the Buddhist crisis was reached when Thich Quang Duc ignited himself and burned to death in as a protest in the street in front of a large crowd in Saigon (Moss, 2010). The appalling images of the self immolation of Thich Quang Duc were spread throughout the world by international media coverage. Demonstrations by the Buddhists and retaliation by the GVN continued to escalate to a point where the United States could no longer support the Diem government, which despite financial assistance that amounted to over $1,000,000 per day and the support of the American military, refused to cooperate (Toong, 2008). Subsequently, and dependent on Diem s lack of response to pressure from the United States regarding the Buddhist crisis, the Kennedy administration decided to participate in a coup to overthrow him (Toong, 2008). The final straw was the pagoda raids on August 21 and Diem s declaration of martial law with threats to shoot and kill Americans on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Taking a Look at Neurotransmitter Release Neurotransmitter release is a key step to neuro transmission, in the middle of the 20th century; it has been clearly revealed that chemical signals transfer the great majority of the information in the brain. Therefore, different neurochemistry approaches have been emerged to investigate neurotransmitter release process. Later, introducing a radiolabeled precursor into the CNS and measuring the accumulation of a radiolabeled product have made critical improving and developing in vitro preparations approaches including isolated nerve ending fractions or synaptosomes, cultured cells and tissue slices. However, in this study we focused on the use of brain slices, as well as intact structure giving a close picture of th in vivos situation. The tissue slice method was introduced by Warburg in 1920s to investigate the energy metabolism of tissues slice and Henry McIlwain extended it to study brain metabolism. Currently, slices structure is an accepted technique for studying many aspects of neurobiology. Slices are made using a mechanical device, such as a tissue chopper or vibrato me. Subsequently, they are immediately transferred into cold carbongenated iso osmotic salt solution. Tissue slices are used with and without radiolabeled tracers dependent on the case of studies. Subsequently they are transferred into small chamber and superfused 1 hour with fresh carbongenated medium to achieve stability. Following equilibration slices can then be exposed to chemical and/or electrical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Heffernan claims that there is an issue over how children television series only create shows that are not educational for children and are to simplicity. The author uses the show, Blue s room, as an example of how bad children s shows have become. By using the Blue s Room, the author supports the claim by writing over how the new show s first episode was basically demonstrating children how farmers wear overalls while they are doing tasks such as milking a cow and gathering eggs. These units are economy, family, religion, education, and social events. The traditional family social unit is the unit that I chose to observe. Many different factors contribute to the culture of my family. The family unit culture consists of material and nonmaterial aspects. The culture of a social unit can be impacted by many different variables. Some of these variables include beliefs, values, and religion. My family s culture can be expressed through symbols. A bouquet of flowers represents my family. The bouquet is full of flowers with different characteristics, but they all come together to make one unit. The values of my family also play a big part in the family social unit. The most important value is responsibility. My family and everyone in it depend on the fact that everyone has their own responsibilities they need to take care of to continue to make the unit function. Another contributor to my families culture are beliefs. My family unit believes in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This belief brings my family together. The American Dream progressively becomes tainted by materialism and individuals covet money to climb up the social ladder. Scott Fitzgerald incorporates the elements of the 1920 s in Jay Gatsby of The Great Gatsby. In this case we are going to focus on the Dreamliner 787, and the problems that came with the creation of it. The first Boeing 787 Dreamliner was delivered to Japan s ANA in 2011, nearly 40 months after the planned delivery date. The expected delivery was in May 2008, but the fuel efficient 787 Dreamliner s manufacturing had become complicated due to multiple changes in the design and supply chain implemented all at once. Far from the traditional manufacturing, Dreamliner design consists of many new features like unique design, one piece fuselage, reduced weight, 20% increase in fuel economy, and reduction in maintenance time. Apart from the changes in design, another major difficulty was the company s global supply chain network. For the first time ever Boeing outsourced two most critical parts fuselage and wings. Everything put together, the complications kept increasing and so is the delay. At least when the plane finally the entered the market years later design came out as expected, and there weren t any sacrifices to the design that had to be made. In third grade, I learned that my uncle had died. A relative dying may not particularly uncommon, but my story varies from others because I had not known my uncle existed. The extent of my knowledge at the time was that my dad had 1 brother but he apparently had 2. My parents never told me about him because they didn;t want me to hang around somebody who used drugs because of the possible influence it could have on me. My uncle s drug addiction began in his teens. He ended up stealing stuff in order to pay for them, unbeknownst to his parents and my dad. I think this perfectly illustrates the lapse in judgement of teens because my uncle made the choice to do drugs once which at the time may have seemed cool but if he thought it through, maybe he never would have actually used them. If he was older at that time, he may have thought his decision through more than he did and he would still be alive today. The major judgement issues in teens result in much more than just a drug addiction but they may result in a teen with a completely surgically changed body. In order to prevent this, having an age restriction presents itself as the only solution. What scientific evidence did scientists have to justify this grouping of elements? Johann Dobereiner, a German chemist, suggested the grouping of elements with similar properties into clusters of three triads. He discovered that when arranged in ascending atomic mass, in the case of lithium, sodium and potassium, sodium s atomic mass was approximately the arithmetic mean of lithium and potassium. There was also a correlation between the atomic numbers, (Li 3, Sodium 11, Potassium 19) which showed the mean of the lowest and highest atomic numbers equalled the atomic number of the middle element. After the war, the Korean Peninsula was divided into two states along the 38th parallel. The Soviet union controlled the communist north while the United States controlled the nationalist and anti communist south. Soviet general Terentii Shtykov established the Provisional People s Committee for North Korea in 1946 and Kim Il sung became chairman. Shtykov broke North Korea s stratified class system, nationalized critical industries, and as a result many fled to the south. Later that year, South Korean citizens resisted the rule of the Allied Military Government and continued to resist despite violent opposition until they declared their statehood in May 1948. Shortly after this, The Democratic People s Republic of Korea was established, and Kim Il sung became the premier leader. Shtykov suspected President Syngman Rhee of South Korea was planning an attack on North Korea, and so with the help of Jospeh Stalin, North Korea launched an attack on South Korea on June 25th, 1950. This started the Korean War, which was essentially a proxy war between America and the Soviets. The United Nations force (led by the United States) assisted South Korea in the war. • 33. The Church during the Middle Ages The Middle Ages were a time that revolved around Christianity and converting or killing off all those who were not Christian. As a result, strict laws were put in place that prohibited the practices that weren t Christian. This also meant anything that was pagan was prohibited and punishable by death. There were many practices that would be considered pagan, but the main ones of concern were the things the Church did not approve. Of the things the Church did not approve magic, like witchcraft, and heresy were two of the main things that were forbidden by both state and Church law. The main reason the Church wanted to block off magic practices was to stay in power (or keep its power). This is supported by the following: the influence of the Church on the kings resulted in the passing of civil laws against magic; the Inquisition making sure people did not engage in magical practices; the Church leaders downplaying witchcraft; and the persecution of the Knights Templar and followers of John Wycliffe (who led the movement against papal authority and the clergy). Magic originated from pagan roots in the Ancient period when Christianity did not exist. It did not involve devils or demons, as the Church branded it later on and is often portrayed currently. Witchcraft originally was just a form of folk magic that would be practiced as a normal routine, like a prayer, or used for good luck. People made charms and potions to help them do something in their lives. Whether it is for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Assemblage Art And The Arts At Ohio State University Assemblage art is the process of an artist creating a piece of work out of objects and materials rather than just paints and brushes. Assemblage art interests me more because of the history of the materials before it was created into a work being displayed. The specific artist used other s scraps and trash to assemble a piece of art greater than both people combined and the ending product comes out to be something a lot more significant than trash . Although I don t know much about assemblage art and the process of it, I can interpret it for hopefully what the artist wanted me to and I can find the significance within it. The piece of work I chose to analyze comes from the Wexner Center for the Arts here at Ohio State University. This piece of art was made in 1988 and comes from the Terri and Michael Smooke Collection, its name is The Last Supper. Though I didn t learn about assemblage, I was exposed to the relevance of one of the most historically significant paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, The Last Supper. This late 15th century painting is a religion icon and depicts Jesus Christ and his 12 disciples at their last supper before Jesus was sent off to get crucified. I believe the piece of art I analyzed was clearly inspired by Leonardo s The Last Supper due to the same name and key similarities I found in the painting. For starters, my painting doesn t have any human figures represented in it but instead just silverware, plates , and sardine cans. The sardine cans near ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Center For Disease Control And Prevention Literature Review (The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015) points to many sectors of society including families, communities, schools, medical care providers, and the media as sources of influence on dietary and physical activity behaviors. In today s society, we are seeing a trend of major influence coming from many different types of media. An example of this is social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Where people will post photos, usually with a filter to show their target audience that they are happy with their life, and not showing their real heartache. Another example of influence coming from media is from the Hollywood industry, in which to be successful in that type of business a person is to be thin, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Barge Schlueter, 2004, p. 237) describes memorable messages as embedded with assumptions about who can speak, about what and when, through that medium, and with what intent and these discourses structure a set of obligations and opportunities for relationships and identities. Knapp states that memorable messages have three different qualities that make a good memorable message. To start, (Knapp et al., 1981) states that First, memorable messages often come from someone who is older and of higher status, Most campaigns will use a spokesperson who is well known to the public; an example of this is a celebrity putting their name towards a cause. These spokespeople are often the campaign s biggest supporters both financially and motivational. (Miles A, et. al., 2001) describes that research into adult interventions shows that those who take part in mass media health campaigns are women from higher socioeconomic groups who are already engaging in better health practices. Second, memorable messages are often brief oral injunctions that prescribe rules of conduct for solving a personal problem, (Knapp et al., 1981). These would be more explicit directives, such as Exercise more and You should eat smaller portions, such as. Also, we may expect that parents messages will show their attitudes toward overweight and obesity that imply a rule. For example, if a parent tells their child, Obese people ... • 36. The Pros And Cons Of The Crusades The Crusades were a series of wars inspired by conflicting religious ideologies, specifically between Christians and Muslims. A series being, that between the years 1096 and 1291, nine major military expeditions occurred. Christian Muslim interactions between the 1000 1500 centuries were mostly negative then positive. The justification for war included securing and gaining control of the holy lands or territories sacred to both groups (Damascus, The River Jordan, Jerusalem, and numerous others) and to diffuse or universalize their religious ideologies to those living in the eastern hemisphere. Jerusalem was considered the holiest of all sites, because it was significantly important to both religions, in different ways. To Christians, Jerusalem represents; the place of birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the Savior or Messiah to Christianity. However, to Muslims, Jerusalem houses the Al Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest site in Islam), in which they believe Muhammad was transported to during the Night Journey (a physical and spiritual journey) from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca. Islamic hero or leader of the Crusades, Saladin, is credited with re conquesting Jerusalem from the Christians, uniting Muslim fractions and states, while enabling and promoting Islamic faith and practices to exist in Jerusalem. Saladin was born in 1138, to a military family, in Tikrit (modern day Iraq). He gained his dominance among ancient civilizations through his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Similarities Of Jacob And Esau When Jacob and Esau were born, they were extremely different despite being twins. Esau was robust and red headed while Jacob was meek and small. When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau s heel; so he was named Jacob, (Genesis 25:19 34). Jacob was a trickster. He covered himself with the hide of a lamb to mimic his brothers appearance and take his blessing as the first born. So Jacob went out and got the young goats for his mother. Rebekah took them and prepared a delicious meal, just the way Isaac liked it. Then she took Esau s favorite clothes, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Importance Of Ancient Egypt Egypt has fascinated a multitude of people for a millennia. Many people today travel to Egypt to tour the famous pyramids, the Sphinx, tombs, mummies, and to learn about the people and culture of Egypt. Museum exhibits throughout the world, movies and plays such as Antony and Cleopatra by Shakespeare, and even model versions off the pyramids such as those that can be found in Las Vegas; are just a few examples of the ways in which people have brought ancient Egypt back to the limelight. The interest in ancient Egypt is referred to as Egyptomania, and it is defined as being the fascination of ancient Egypt typically by Europeans. This mania is often attributed to beginning with Napoleon s campaign into Egypt in the years 1798 1801. But this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The temple of Isis at Philae would have made a very impressive and lasting impression on tourists including Romans. In addition to this Romans brought back various objects that would have come from the festival as well such as statuettes, papyri scrolls, and canopic jars which would have reminded them of their time in Egypt at the temple. The impression, knowledge, and souvenirs that the Romans brought back with them from Egypt influenced their own architecture, specifically in the case of the temple of Isis at Pompeii. The inclusion and discovery and of Egyptian characteristics found in Italian manufactured objects is referred to as aegyptiaca, and items such as wall paintings and sculptures are been found throughout the Roman Empire. This Roman fascination with Egypt can be classified as being the same if not similar to what scholars consider the European fascination of Egypt as being Egyptomania. The difference in the case of Rome is that the fascination seems to have been limited to architecture and art, whereas modern Egyptomania focuses on a revival of all aspects of Egyptian culture. There seem to be three main reasons for the appearance of Egyptian motifs to have made an appearance in Rome: to remind the people of the vastness of the Empire, to make a connection to the royal court, and to participate in the cult of Isis. The temple of Isis at Pompeii is an example of aegyptiaca when considering the unusual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
