Petroleum is the main source of energy in both Indonesia and Australia, making up 30% and 36% of total energy consumption respectively. Indonesia relies on cars and motor scooters for transportation while Australia relies more on cars, with public transportation more common in major cities. Water pollution is Indonesia's main pollution problem while air pollution affects Australia more. The average daily water usage in Indonesia was 38.4L per person in 1993, much lower than Australia's 340L currently. Both countries could benefit from developing alternative energy sources like solar, wind and hydro power to reduce their large ecological footprints.
3. Main Source of Energy in
Indonesia
Petroleum is
Indonesia’s
main source
of energy
with it
making up
30% of the
total energy
consumption
for the
country
4. Alternative Energy Sources
Indonesia does not have many
alternative energy sources but are hoping
in the near future to use the alternative
energy sources of solar power, wind
energy and hydro power to their full
potential
5. Main Source of Transport
Indonesia’s main sources of transportation
include cars and motor scooters
7. Water Use
In 1993, it was stated that the daily usage
of water for an Indonesian was 38.4L per
day. Even though this information is quite
old, the daily usage of water used by an
Indonesian would not have changed very
drastically
8. Indonesia’s Ecological
Footprint
Research done could not identify
Indonesia, as a whole, ecological
footprint. It would be assumed though
after looking at the previous factors, their
ecological footprint would be quite high
10. Main Source of Energy in
Australia
Petroleum
and other oils
make up
Australia’s
main source
of energy with
it being 36% of
the total
energy
consumption
in the country
12. Main Source of Transport
Australia’s main
source of
transportation is by
car. In major cities,
it is common to
see many people
use public
transport including
busses and trains
but in smaller
cities, public
transport is not as
common
14. Water Use
The average daily water consumption for
an Australian is 340L per person. This
number is so high due to the fact that we
use water to drink, have showers, go to
the toilet and brush our teeth which starts
to all add up when we think about it
15. Australia’s Ecological Footprint
Australia has one of the largest ecological
footprints in the world! Most of our
footprint is due to Green House Gas
Emissions with the average household
emitting 14 tones of greenhouse gases
each year
16. From all of the information
looked at, what did you
find interesting or surprising
and why?
17. Write down 5 points being
a combination of similarities
and differences you found
most important when
learning about Indonesia’s
and Australia’s
Environmental Sustainability

Editor's Notes
Explain to students that Petroleum is a source of energy used to make fuels like petrol and diesel. According to the graph it is clear to see that petroleum is Indonesia’s main source of energy closely followed by reusable energy and coal. Why do you think petroleum could be Indonesia’s main source of energy?
Alternative energy sources include wind and solar power. Research suggests that there is not a lot of alternative energy being used in Indonesia at the present time but this is wanting to be changed in the near future. What other alternative energy sources could Indonesia consider using?
This is a photo of one of many of Indonesia’s busy roads. The countries main form of transportation is car and motor scooters. It is clear to see in the picture why petroleum is Indonesia’s main source of energy as there are so many cars and scooters that would be using it.
The main form of pollution in Indonesia is water pollution. Can you see that this is evident by looking at the photo? Why? Why do you think it Indonesia’s water got like this?
A study in 1993 concluded that the daily usage of water for an Indonesian was 38.4L per day which is quite little when we think about how much water we use each day
Why do you think their footprint could be quite high? What factors would cause this?
Just like Indonesia, Petroleum is Australia’s main source of energy. Why?
Hydropower is Australia's main source of alternative energy. Hydropower is power made from moving water. Why do you think hydropower is Australia's main alternative energy source?
Again like Indonesia, Australia’s main source of transport is car. Why?
The main form of pollution in Australia is air pollution. How do you think air pollution occurs? Where do you think this air pollution is coming from?
Wow! That is a major difference in daily water use considering a person in Indonesia would daily only use 50L of water. Why do you think ours would be different? What activities or jobs do we do that use water every day?
Australia has one of the largest ecological footprints in the world. Most of this is due to greenhouse gases which are toxic gases that destroy out ozone layer and our environment. There are other factors contributing to our ecological footprint like grazing land for animals and forest use, but greenhouse gas emissions is the major factor. Each average household is emitting 14 tones of greenhouse gases each year which adds up to be a lot when we think about how many people live in Australia.
