George Pullman And Economic Depression
Economic depression took a big toll on America, causing events like the Panic of 1893 which
created the collapse of railroad overbuilding, which further led to the collapse of many banks. This
depression affected George Pullman s company, causing him to take actions, making more of an
impact than he ever thought. George Pullmanwas an American engineer and industrialist who
founded his company. He created a community and environment that his workers lived and
worked in. His company played a big role in the labor movement because they were a prime
source for transportation. Overtime, companies grew and continued to grow by opening mines,
overflowing the market with minerals such as silver. Faster construction meant building more
railroads so more goods could be shipped. Building more railroads meant having more
transportation and soon enough, the production rate was significantly lower than the sell rate since
companies had more deliveries from the railroads. When economic depression hit, Pullman had to
make some changes that would benefit the company but not the people of the community.
Economic depression sparked conflicts that resulted in the Pullman Strike. George Pullman failed
to create a compromise that would solve the worker s unfair wages, poor working conditions, and
the lack of voice they had, and this resulted in a halt on the labor movement. Because of economic
depression, George Pullman was forced to make changes in order to keep his company thriving. He

A Study Of Public Administration
Since Woodrow Wilson (1889) published the article, a study of public administration , the main
question in the field of public administration is how to govern a democratic and political entity.
Given public administration conventionally concerns about civil servants and agencies in the
executive branch, one among diverse and essential subfields is bureaucracyand organizational
theory. In general, the development of studies on bureaucracy and organizational theory has gone
through the period of classical theory to modern theory, and from modern theory to the advent of
post modernism and post positivism. After historically reviewing the growth of knowledge on this
subfield, forces behind the progress are the product of countless and... Show more content on

But with respect to the mean to this end, while the Federalist prefers centralized executive powers,
the anti Federalist go another way suggested by communitarianism.
In terms of organizational theories, there are at least two main streams at that time can be
identified. The first is managerialism, including scientific management and human relation school.
Basically, both focused on management strategies. Nevertheless, one focused on principles of
management for formal organizations, the other cares more about psychological status and
informal organizations. For scientific management, the founding father is Frederick Taylors (1912)
who employed scientific methods, like natural science, to measure working loadings and should
be working times for increasing efficiency and developing a fair payments systems. Under his
guidance, Gulick (1937) and Urwick (1945) make efforts to propose several principles of
organizational operations and design. The most famous one would be POSDCORB introduced by
Gulick. On the other hand, Elton Mayor (1930), as conducting the Hawthorne experiment, found
the benign presence of researchers would boost productivities, instead of changes in facilities in
factories. Chester Barnard (1938) argued that organizations are cooperative system maintaining the
dynamic balances between the needs of the organization and its employees. With respect to the
need of employees, Maslow came up with the need

The United States 1932 Election Essay
The United States 1932 Election Many historians believe that the 1932 election was a popularity
competition, with the prize being the chief of the white house. This is because they thought that
Hoover s inability to revive the depressed economy, and his lack of a personality that reaches out
to the average American, provided Roosevelt (who was very popular) with a path to victory. I shall
discuss this view, with points in favour and points that argue Roosevelt had an appealing policy and
opinions that ensured his triumph which did not rely on Hoover s incompetence and lack of charm.
Beginning with the points in favour, it becomes easy to understand the principle behind the
aforementioned... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another point, which greatly affected Hoover s chances of winning, was his inconsistency in
methods. At first, he was dependant on voluntarism (charities and businesses helping at their
own will) to solve the problem of the depression. Hoover implemented the POUR organisation to
help the unemployed, but it only used donated money. The charity Red Cross, by 1931 could
only provide 75 cents a week for hungry families. The situation had developed far beyond the
ability of private charity to cope (source 3). His inconsistency is shown when he alters his
approach from opposing direct government aid and laissez fair (to leave alone), to intervention.
He personally gave up a fifth of his income. In January, congress provided $2 billion in funding a
new agency, the reconstruction finance corporation (which makes loans to large economic
organisations) and in February, Hoover signed the Glass Steagell act, which allocated £750
million of gold reserves to businesses. However, what he did was too little too late. Roosevelt s
strength was that he was quick to capitalise on the republicans failures in their approach of
voluntarism and this gave him an advantage, as the American public was willing to try something
new. Roosevelt once said in a speech for his election campaign in 1932: Whatever

Designing Products Of Artworks Based On Using The Knowledge
The idea behind my project is the process to create products of artworks based on using the
knowledge that I already know and use new and different techniques that I inquired and reflected
upon. My plan is to create an inventory of merchandise which then I would be able to sell to
clientele who wishes to own these pieces of art. I would also use the earning to buy more supplies
that will be used to create more artworks. At the end of the year, I will count the amount of funds
that was accumulated and spent, and my goal is to end up with a positive net sum amount. So in
other words, I would make artwork that is appealing and creative as an artist, and then turning
around and sell these paintings to potential customers who desire... Show more content on

Then I came to the idea of making paintings. After realizing what I could do, I went to school the

make that my project. The Area of Interaction that I will be demonstrating Human Ingenuity. My
MYP Personal Project fits into the Human Ingenuity Category because it allows me to use my own
creative talent that can be incorporated into these artworks that I had made. It gives me the ability
to explore different types of art techniques and reflect on the paintings that I had already made to
improve on details on the artwork. The reflections that I make on paintings are always consistent,
whether it was when I was starting on new paintings, or when I was continuing a painting the next
day. The process that I took to make paintings was to first look for inspiration. Inspiration was
always taken when the paintings were made. I would mainly use either Pinterest or Google,
where I would just glance over images and picture what I can put on the canvas; I also used
these sources for help, for example, I had trouble trying to paint a sunset, so I used this tool to aid
me in my process. The first step that I would do on the canvas, however, would be to sketch out my

Rhetorical Analysis Of A More Perfect Union
Senator Barack Obama had many issues throughout his campaign. Obama s speech, A More Perfect
Union , delivered on March 18, 2008, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, conveyed many issues
concerning racism throughout the United States, but it starts out stating how the founders of this
nation constructed the Declaration of Independence, creating all men equal. Obama then begins to
talk about his pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, and his racial remarks against America and Israel,
as it is divisive at a time when we need unity , referring to the two wars, a terrorist threat, a
falling economy, a chronic health care crisis going on at the time. (Obama 2) Obama remarks I
am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas, (Obama 1) because there
is much criticism in his campaign due to his race. Obama argues that race is paralyzing our nation,
and that it is still a major issue due to white privilege, and racial inequality. In the end, Obama
hopes to move past the racial stalemate we ve been stuck in for years, (Obama 6) and wishes to
improve health care, jobs, schools, and other social issues for the United States.
There is not one rhetorical strategy used in this speech as ethos, pathos, and logos are all seen.
Obama appeals to emotion very successfully reaching people affected by racial issues. Obama
successfully uses allusion and repetition, along with personal anecdotes to relate with the audience.
Ethos is a rhetorical strategy used to appeal to

Psychoanalytic Personality In Lord Of The Flies
Psychoanalytic Personality Essay William Golding is a very strange man. The types of stories
that he wrote are very demonic, strange, and very insane to the reader. His demonic ways of life
all lead to him writing the novel, Lord of the Flies. Throughout the book, William Golding shows
examples of Freud s characteristics of the three different types of personality. The three characters
that show these examples are stranded on an island and showing whether or not they will have the
civilized side of them left. ( Id, Egoand Super ego) The three characters on the island are Jack,
Ralph, and Piggy.
The first personality is ID. ID operates on the pleasure principle which is the idea that every
impulse should be satisfied immediately, regardless of the consequences. When the ID achieves
its demands, they then experience pleasure. When it is denied, they then experience unpleasure
or tension. (McLeod) The best character from Lord of the Flies that fits this personality is Jack.
Jack is willing to do anything for his clan of wild hooligans and that even means killing anything
to protect them, for example killing the beast before it kills them all. Also, he is eager to make
rules and punish those who break them, he makes others follow them but he doesn t follow those
same rules that he creates.(Golding ) The other two characters are nothing like Jack but they do
care about the others like Jack does.
The next personality of the three is Ego. Freud s famous motto for

Philip Zimbardo s Prison Experiment
In 1971, psychology professor Philip Zimbardo conducted an experiment led by a team of
researchers which involved twenty four male participants who were predominantly white and of
the middle class. The goal of the experiment was to test the hypothesis that the inherited
personality traits of prison guards and actual prisoners are the main cause of violent and abusive
behaviours in prisons. The selection method involved intentionally excluding anybody who had a
criminal background, psychological impairment or any medical conditions. The men were paid
$15 a day if they all agreed to participate over a 7 to 14 day period. The experiment took place in
Stanford University s Psychology building and upon arrival, the participants were divided into...

Zimbardo himself admitted that he was totally caught up in playing his role of prison warden and
was so involved in the experiment that he begun to forget his sole purpose and what he truly needed
to focus on. Miller (2004), stated the experiment concluded that negative situational forces
overwhelmed the positive dispositional tendencies. This concludes that the experiment had in fact
proved that when good people were put into evil, negative situations and environments, the evil
triumphed over the good people. Many coping mechanisms for the situation were also witnessed,
including 5 of the young men being so traumatized they had to leave the experiment within the first
week. Other prisoners experienced emotional breakdowns and suffered with extreme amounts of
stress from the prison guards and the environment they were surrounded by. Some participants who
appeared to have adapted better than the others mindlessly followed orders and became unseeingly
obedient to authority (Miller, 2004). The guards continued to dehumanize and degrade the prisoners
more and more with every new day and night. The young men whom had taken on the role of prison
guards were seen to be behaving sadistically and constantly inflicting humiliation on the prisoners
whom have an inferior human status stigma surrounding them. Some guards reported that they
were in fact enjoying inflicting the pain and mental games to these prisoners, which would usually
be so out of character when not under the situational forces that they were (Miller,

William Wordsworth s The Prelude And Lord Byron s Biting...
The Romantic poets sought to write epics that incorporated new philosophies, ideals, and literary
trends, while also parodying, satirizing and deconstructing the epic poem itself. Rather than merely
extend the epic tradition, several Romantic poets subverted the characteristics and tropes attributed
to epic poetry, creating an interesting revision of the epic. Two seminal works of Romantic poetry
that adequately showcase the revision of epic tradition are William Wordsworth s introspective epic
The Prelude and Lord Byron s biting epic satire Don Juan. Incorporating either introspection and
reflection or irony and satire, both of these works incorporate themes from the epic tradition while
also subverting its significant aspects,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How both Wordsworth and Byron transgress and subvert these themes, particularly the heroic ideal,
not only separates Romantic epic poetry from classical epic poetry and epic tradition, but this
revision results in the creation of a new tradition.
Wordsworth is known for his introspection, often writing about feelings and emotions, mortality
and nature. Wordsworth s The Prelude is a seminal work. The poem is about the growth of the
poet s mind. It is autobiographical and deals with different periods of Wordsworth s life, such as
his childhood, his time at Cambridge and his residence in France. The poem features
Wordsworth reflecting on his experiences and feelings. The poem acts as a look into how he
views himself as a poet. In The Politics of the Epic: Wordsworth, Byron, and the Romantic
Redefinition of Heroism, author Paul Cantor contends that despite the use of epic writing, the
poem itself is vastly different from the epic. It is written in an elevated blank verse that often has
a Miltonic ring, it contains epic diction and epic similes, and it shows many other signs of
Wordsworth s attempt to work within the established epic tradition. But if one looks at the
beginning of the poem, where the epic poet traditionally invokes his Muse, one can see how
radically Wordsworth differs from his predecessor (Cantor, 377). The poem, Miltonic in its style
and diction, does seem to mimic the Miltonic epic style, at least somewhat. This does not mean,
however, that

The Battle On The Plains Of Abraham
In 2009 a planned re enactment of the Battle on the Plains of Abraham was set to take place on the
original battlefield in light of its 250th anniversary. However the historical re enactment of the 1759
battle was cancelled by The National Battlefields Commission for security concerns that could, as
CBC News wrote, turn into a modern day conflict. There is speculation other factors influenced the
withdrawal of the re enactment such as the overwhelming negative responses from the
francophones in Quebec. These negative reactions were supported by the devastation resulting from
the loss of the battle in 1759 and the modern day neglect of Quebec and French culture. I commend

Therefore I stand in favour of the threats alone being reasonable grounds for the federal body to
cancel the re enactment. Parti Quebecois was also blamed for the cancellation for their statement
that event is a slap in the face to Quebecers of French ancestry (CBC News) which got a rise out
of those in support of this political group as they began trying to stop the event. The statement
released by Parti Quebecois definitely had a hand in spreading awareness of the negative opinions
of the re enactment which ultimately led to large group of people opposed to the event resulting in
the cancellation. All in all, to those in charge, the cancellation of the event was about keeping
innocent families out of harm s way, preventing a modern day Battle based on the historical one
from occurring, and maintaining a civil status between the French and English in Quebec. Although
the threats of violence from activist groups were the official reason given for the cancellation of
the re enactment, there are speculations of other reasons as to why the federal body made this
decision.
With the announcement of re enacting the Battle on the Plains of Abraham came an overwhelming
amount of negative feedback from Quebec residents, the reason being that the loss of the Battle
began a traumatic period in history for the French. With their victory, the British began trying to
assimilate the French, it was only

`` Nothing Happened `` By Chan Koon Chung
When those words are being written down, a huge protest named Occupy Central is taking place
in Hong Kong. At this critical moment of history, what impresses us first from the name of this
protest is a power of space: Hong Kong people, who is regarded as the peripheral of China, by
occupying the Central (a sub center), strive for becoming visible and hearable to the center
(Beijing) to resist their doomed future: an ostensible direct election in 2017, or even worse political
sufferings that people cannot imagine. This highly intense political anxiety related to the mainland,
since the postwar period, has accompanied Hong Kongpeople and been deeply internalized into
their spatiotemporal experience. Based on a novella named Nothing Happened
(д»Ђд№€й
ѓЅжІЎжњ‰еЏ‘з”џ) from Hong Kong writer Chan Koon chung, this paper tries to
investigate how the Hong Kong protagonist s anxiety of the future of his city, a temporal
experience, however appears within a spatial, or precisely, geopolitical form, and furthermore, the
paper tries to trace beneath the anxiety to the trauma that is interweaved with the (post)coloniality
of Hong Kong.
As Ackbar Abbas points out: Hong Kong has no precolonial past to speak of (2). Initially, Hong
Kong is a colonial city strategically located and established at an intermediary point, not only as the

Color Purple Archetypes
Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple, portrays the main character Celie as an introverted
butterfly who has yet to come out of her cocoon, hiding away from confrontation and actions that
could cause negative reactions. As the story progresses, she blossoms before the reader,
becoming more present in her world where she would otherwise be shuttered in. Her character
development is due to the introduction of two very empowering and independent women, acting
as female archetypes throughout the novel. Shug, a woman with a fiery personality that ignites
inspiration in Celie to further herself as a woman, is the main focal point of the female
archetype in this novel. Celie wants to change herself; not to fit into the mold in which Shug has
pushed herself into, but to better her life. Shug s personality was able to rid Celie of the internal
dark cloud living inside her. Shug is clearly identified as a female archetype throughout the novel;
an empowering woman who stands against the odds she has been faced with. Another female
archetype in the novel is Sofia, Mr._____ s (Celie s husband) daughter in law. Sofia shares many

dry her tears, becoming a caregiver of sorts. She can also be seen as possessing the hero
archetype because Celie admires Shug and aspires to be similar to her, not in her behavior but her
confident personality. Celie sees how easily it is for Shug to stand up for herself and to act
confident around higher male figures, both are things she has never managed to

Summary Of Bram Stoker s Vampire Religion
Often, when we think of certain situations it makes us feel uncomfortable or gives us
goosebumps. The thought of vampires automatically makes me think of blood, fire and evil
activities. I have always wondered why vampires seem to not like rosary. As I read Dracula I
noticed that he did not like rosary which is associated with Christ. After reading Dracula, I was able
to determine that it is not the rosary object itself, but the thought of what the object actually is.
Bram Stoker s version of Draculawas associated with a Christian theme. Dracula was evil which
would typically not be associated with anything Christian like so he was opposed to it. The article
that was the most appealing to me relating to Dracula and religion is called VampireReligion by
Christopher Herbert. The article expressed the religious symbols in Bram Stoker s Dracula. The
article also discussed how the people of Transylvania were very superstitious. Herbert goes on to
discuss how Stoker incorporates Christianity and vampirism in Dracula. Herbert s article
interested me because I noticed how Dracula s actions and Jonathan Harker s beliefs clashed in the
book. Moreover, Herbert s article spoke in depth about the various religious symbols shown in
Stoker s Dracula. Herbert stated, Its characters pray constantly for the intercession of Almighty God
in their struggles with the demonic; they cross themselves, brandish crucifixes, and invoke the
protective powers of communion wafers (Herbert 100).

Romeo And Juliet Comparison Essay
William Shakespeare s famous Romeo and Juliet was reinvented in 1996 as Romeo + Juliet and
was directed by Baz Luhrmann. Luhrmann s interpretation has turned Shakespeare s traditional tale
of a tragic love story into a modern and urbanised 20th century version. Luhrmann s adaptation
keeps the classic story of Romeo and Juliet true. This is seen by still having the constant feud
between the Montague and Capulet family and the countless tragedies, yet Luhrmann adds a 20th
century twist by using guns instead of swords and replacing horses with cars. The main characters
remain as Romeo and Juliet, although there is a greater focus on them than their parents. The
events take place in Verona, however, it is at Verona Beach in Florida, not Italy. All of Luhrmann s

most powerful and key lines to emphasise the desperation for escape Juliet is looking for. In the

Lehmberg V. Travis County Court Case
Soon after, Travis County DA Rosemary Lehmberg contacted Harle to request an appointment.
The judge who was in the midst of a capital murder trial in his home district elected to speak to
her by phone instead, but he had a court reporter transcribe the exchange, which took place on
September 16. During a hearing in Georgetown ten days later, he provided a sealed transcript of
the conversation to Morrison, Raley, Jernigan, and Roberts and called a recess during which the
attorneys could read it. The transcript contained an earth shattering bit of information: a pubic hair
that had been recovered from Debra Baker s bed in 1988 did, in fact, match Norwood s DNA profile.

Chemical Warfare Research Paper
Chemical warfare has been around for a very long time, since 4000 BC when the spartans
attacked the Athenians with long hay and sulfur in them to try to get the Athenians to come out,
that attack failed the coughing Athenians never did leave. No one used Chemicals for a long
time, though they were aware of them. Then a man named Fritz harbor saw power in them, he
was helping the german out by his fertilizer discovery but, he saw something else in the fertilizer.
He saw weapons of destruction so he made a fluorine bomb which will bring fiery tears to a
grown man s eyes . Fritz put fluorine in a canister then had soldiers use it against the Russians but,
the gas froze in the arctic tundra in Russia. He then moved to his brother Chlorine or Mustard gas.

Hitler did however use chemicals in concentration camps, in those he used Zyklon B. Zyklon B
was an interesting chemical because instead of gas it was pellets. After it mixes with the air it lets
out a bitter almond odor. The chemical then combines with red blood cells then suffocates you. It
also left a blue stain in the gas chambers which can still be seen to day if the gas chamber is in
tact. Zyklon was a very bad chemical that killed hundreds of thousands jews in the concentration
camps.
Chemical treaties after WWI where chemicals caused over 1 million casualties the geneva protocol

My Experience At High School Classroom
Key Assessment Education 2130 Throughout my observation hours that I completed at South
Forsyth Middle School, I learned many things that I can apply to my classroom when I become
a teacher. I was cultured inside of the classroom to many new techniques and teaching styles that
will be beneficial for my career that is to come. I experienced the classroom in a wide variety due
to the different environments I witnessed during my time observing. Taking my experiences from
the broad array of students, I now feel more prepared for what lies ahead in my teaching career.
My time at South Forsyth Middle School gave me experience with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The
students ranged from on level art students to advanced year long students. I came across a trend of
endless opportunities within the classroom for the students. If the students came across a technique
or type of artwork that they wanted to try, the school and Ms. Wood made that happen. She had high
school teachers and college professors present their studies and beliefs to the students in order to
widen their perspectives and outlook on the art community. For example, they had the opportunity
to watch a high school teacher come and create pieces of pottery on the wheel. This can almost
give students a sense of motivation, encouraged them to look past art as they know it, and see the
beauty of art from someone else s perspective.
I have completed my field hours in a middle school environment. I observed 6th, 7th, and

How Does Napalm Affect The Human Body
Kim Phu`c, a survivor from the Napalm bombing, says Napalm is the most painful thing you can
ever imagine, water boils at 212 degrees fahrenheit, Napalm generates temperatures at 1,500 2,200
degrees fahrenheit. Kim had third degree burns all over her body. In 1965 1972, US troops used
napalm in the Vietnam; napalmwas a mix of plastic polystyrene, hydrocarbon benzene, and
gasoline. When all of these substances are mixed together it creates a jelly like substance. When
napalm is ignited and will stick to just about anything and burn up to ten minutes. The effect of
napalm on the human body is unbearably painful and almost always was the cause of death.
Napalm was first used in flamethrowers for U.S. ground troops. They burned down all the forest
and bushes in hope of taking out all of their enemies. Air raid that used napalm were much more
devastating than the flamethrowers. A single bomb could clear an area of 2,500 square yards.

Brief History of African American Roles in Film
African Americans have had a long history in the American motion picture industry. Early
depictions of African American men and women were limited to demeaning stereotypical images of
people of color. During the first decades of the 20th century, many films depicted idealized vision
of life in the South. These films glorified the image of the Old South .African American characters,
in keeping with the dominant stereotypes, were portrayed as incompetent, child like, hyper
sexualized, and criminal.
Even the roles for African Americans such as loyal servants, mammies, and butlers reinforced a
belief that the proper social position for Blacks was that of a servant who was unswervingly
devoted to his/her White masters and to upholding the current social order.

Imax Case Study
1. Introduction
Harberber and Rieple (2008) define strategy as a set of intentional or inadvertent set of actions
through which an organization develops the required set of resources, efficiently target valuable
customers, meet financial targets and competes effectively. These strategic decisions drive the long
term direction of the organization, the scope of its activities, help gain advantage over competitors,
and address changes in the business environment.
The case of IMAX begins in 1994 when business partners Gelfond and Wechsler decided to
purchase the organisation from its original owners and take the company public. IMAX operates in
a people oriented business, operating within the entertainment industry. Through the years the...

The largest threat however is the nature of competitive rivalry. Movie production studios are
releasing more movies in 3D format, which could pose a threat to IMAX s inhouse collection of
large format 3D documentaries (Georgiades, 2010a). Its buyers are vertically integrating to build
their own large format screens, and it is possible for them to start selling it to competitors (Pacher,
2009). The success rate of movies in the market also makes it increasingly difficult to turn a
significant profit on every movie featured in IMAX screens.
However, the industry is experiencing growth. Though it is increasingly becoming mature in US
/Canada, Worldwide box office revenue has increased steadily in recent years (as seen in figure
1). Growth was experienced in all regions of the world, especially Asia Pacific and Latin America
(MPAA, 2009). According to Georgiades (2010), the recent growth of the movie industry has been
driven by the introduction of new technology, particularly large format screens and 3D, through
which viewers can have a new immersive movie experience.

Pachner (2009) stated that the movie industry was increasingly becoming matured and declining,

Mobile Banking for the Unbanked
In many developing countries it s common for a person to have a mobile phone but not a bank

increase. To that end, many companies are considering how to give residents access to banking
services via their handsets. The GSM Association predicts that by 2012, nearly 300 million of
the previously unbanked will be using some form of mobile banking. The mistake a lot of us

A subscription model doesn t appeal to the poor at all, Rangan says. They don t want to pay a fee
for something they might not use. Moreover, more than half of South Africa s population had no
access to a bank account. This was largely because half of the population lived below the poverty

it an unprofitable proposition to serve people who make less than three dollars per day, Rangan
says. Still, WIZZIT s founders thought there was a noble and viable business model in bringing
banking to the poor, via a mobile banking platform that could be used on even the most primitive
cell phone. They succeeded in finding an engineer to develop the platform, but quickly ran into a
major regulatory roadblock. Per the South African government, only licensed banks were allowed

The BM ratio allows us to categorize companies into either a growth (low BM ratio) or a value
(high BM ratio) profile and past empirical studies (see Fama and French) suggest that portfolios
formed over value companies tend to out perform portfolios formed over growth companies over
time. We don t know the influence direction of the variable (given the PCA black box
transformation and Garson s output) but we can formulate hypotheses on the fact that value
companies tend to beat the market more often than growth companies. Dividend yield and
EVtoEBITDA that are our 2nd and 3rd most relevant variables for Neural Nework output also
support this previous fact high dividend yield paying companies characterize generally value
companies, while the EVtoEBITDA ratio characterize the relative price of a company since it
returns how many times an investor is willing to buy the EBITDA (Earnings before interests, taxes,

investor that invests in high EVtoEBITDA companies has generally good growth prospects views
regarding the recurrent earnings of the company. Finally, the factor size is the 4th most relevant

SOF, by virtue of the value of SOF power to national security in the emerging security environment,

The relationship between producers and audiences
Audience research, producer response to research and audience targeting
A producer when beginning pre production or even before will most likely look at some form of
survey s which would include things like possible cast members for the film and the amount of
audience that would want to see possibly be interested in the genre. They will then take this to
the writers and director of the particular film and they will make amendments to how the survey
has come out. A producer will also look at the success of recent films of the same type; this is

one of those films that has crossed the brigde from art house to multiplex and is now being
shown in over 20 vue cinemas in the UK, the producer did this by getting the film publicity from

that sort of publicity will have a big Hollywood premiere that would most likely have a segment

The Hapsburg Valois Wars Of 1494 To 1559
The Hapsburg Valois Wars of 1494 to 1559 are often confused with the Italian Wars. However the
Italian War were a completely different set of wars. The Hapsburg Valois Wars were very much
intertwined with these wars. The latter arose from the instability of the Italian peninsula, which
was divided among a number of vulnerable powers, and also from a new willingness of outside
rulers to intervene. Initially, the most influential was Charles VIII of France (1483 1498), he
invaded Italyin 1494, and manage to take over Naples that following March. Charles s success was
particularly achieved due to his advanced equipment. The cannons used iron shot, which allowed

This proposal explores how hip hop can help accomplish the CCCC s stated goals on multiple

implement those goals at the University of Nevada, Reno s core writing program. Our analysis

be a controversial genre to include in the core writing curriculum, we propose that its inclusion is
not at odds with both the CCCC s and UNR s core writing program, but can in fact be a valuable
asset towards reaching those goals. We believe that first year writing students will benefit from...

The Film Analysis Of The Wizard Of Oz
The Wizard of Oz was first filmed in 1939 and has been revised several times to keep up with the
time frame at present. It started out as a black and white film and was originally produced by
Metro Goldwyn Meyer. Judy Garland is playing the role of Dorothy Gale, who in this film is a
restless bored young girl that wants something other than the dreary life she lives in Kansas,
(Goodykoontz Jacobs, 2014, Ch. 4.3 para. 1,2) This film focuses on the power of the
imagination and gives a place for mental escape and relaxation. The power of the imagination is
demonstrated throughout this entire film. It begins with Dorothy ended up in a place called
Munchinland that has little people, and is filled with colors and excitement, the opposite of
Kansas where everything is black and white. The most magical scene is the scene when Dorothy
and her dog, The Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Scary Lion meets the Wizard. When they
arrive to their destination an image of a man appears during a blazing fire and thick smoke, and
he speaks with authority and control. The fear in Dorothy and her friends is overwhelming to
them, especially for the scary lion who faints before he can speak. The cinematography technique
is crystal clear in capturing the fear and confusion in the characters, as well as the audience. The
special effect in editing allowed the audience to see long views of the face in the fire and smoke
and experience the fear along with Dorothy and her friends. The lighting was

In 1513, an Italian politician by the name of Niccolo Machiavelli distributed, though privately, a

one s country. It s important beforehand to define exactly what a Machiavellian is, before
describing one. A Machiavellian is a leader who, through his power and influence, works toward the
common good of his people. This can be done through fear, through deceit, even through

His climb to power landed himself at the foot of the Russian presidency when President Yeltsin
resigned, naming Putin as his successor to office. Since then, President Putin has found ways to
stay in power through change in constitutional law within Russia, which had formerly caused Putin
to step down as President in 2008. However, as Putin had named Dmitry Medvedev his successor,
Medvedev in turn named Putin, Prime Minister. In most cases, Medvedev would ve run for a
second term, but instead stated he was switching positions with Putin, giving Putin his third

was largely able to stop the protests by jailing the opposition and cracking down on any who

Dante was a man with a vision. He lived in a world that was Torn by discord (Limentani,117).
Born in 1265, Dante s Florence was the center of a war ravaged Italy. He became involved in
politics at a young age and before too long became a White Guelph, one who supported the
Papacy in the fight against invading Germanic kings. 1301 was a tragic year because it marked
the beginning of the Black Guelph regime and saw Dante exiled from his home town forever.
These experiences made Dante quickly realize that this world is corrupt to the core. Greed for
material things is the main fault, greed which is allowed to dictate the actions of men. Only a
cessation of strife, the establishment of universal peace can ensure the happiness of mankind and
allow men to pursue the ultimate aim for which God has destined them on earth, that of exercising
constantly and to the full their distinctive quality, the Virtus Intellective (virtuous intellect)
(Limentani,117). He believed that all life on this earth has a purpose and meaning to it. This can
be seen in the Inferno because during the long trek through Hell Dante does almost nothing but
work to arrive a Paradise, the heavenly end to all those lacking wickedness. He traveled far trying
to make his life purposeful by working his way up to Heaven. Chaucer stood in contrast to Dante s

King Henry II set up laws on prostitutes must be single and had a weekly inspection at the
brothel to make sure laws were not violated. In Italy, 1358 A.D., prostitution was welcomed. In
such ways that brothels were built in major Italian cities, which were government funded. The
Great Council of Venice even publicized prostitution to be absolutely indispensible to the world .
Over 1802, France, monitored brothels were created. The new agency monitored brothels on
whether or not laws were followed and no criminal activity took place. This was successful for
over a century. Up until 1971 Nevada legalized prostitution, even Nevada is not the most liberal
area of the US. Other countries that have legalized and currently regulating prostitution is Austria,
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lebanon, the Netherlands, New
Zealand, Panama, Peru, Senegal, Switzerland, Turkey, Venezuela as well as some Australian
states, and Mexico. Prostitution does not only include whores, but adult film stars, escorts and
strippers. If for centuries it has been working out, there is no reason for prostitution to still be
illegal. See France in 1802, even back then monitored brothels worked out even for over a century.
With the security today and more advanced reasoning, people today are more than capable to make

This is just one example of the many nuclear weapons in the world. Nuclear warfare is caused by
a military conflict or a political strategy in which one uses nuclear weaponry to inflict damage
upon the opponent. Some believe that politicians and military personnel only want to possess
nuclear weapons because of the heightened sense of power and feeling of security. It s scary to
think that the human race is in the hands of the people who own these weapons. The effects of
nuclear use can be divided into four categories: instantaneous, near immediate, short term, and
long term. The heart of a nuclear explosion reaches temperatures over a several million degree
centigrade resulting in a heat flash over a wide area that vaporizes all human tissue. At
Hiroshima, within a radius of half a mile, the only remains of most of the people caught in the
open were their shadows burnt into stone. The near immediate effects are the people inside
buildings or otherwise shielded, will be indirectly killed by the blast and heat effects as buildings
collapse and all inflammable materials burst into flames. The immediate death rate will be over

Biomechanical Principles Applied To The Soccer Kick
Biomechanical Principles Applied to the Soccer Kick
Principal One:
Stability increases when there is a low centre of mass, when there is a wide base of support, the
centre of gravity is within the base of support and there is a large mass.
Unstable balance occurs when an athlete needs to be balanced but ready to move quickly and
become unstable.
The player is unstable as she flexes her hips over the ball during the backswing/recovery. She is
slightly balancing herself as she extends her hip and puts her arms outward on her sides so that she
will not completely fall over.
Her stability remains because she creates a large base of support by taking a wide step. When she
takes this wide step, she is bending her knees and crouching, lowering her centre of mass. She
adjusts her centre of mass to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This occurs in the soccer kick when the athlete makes contact with the ball using the shoelace area
of the cleat opposed to the toe or the sides of the foot. The follow through also contributes to
maximum force because the more time you have making contact, the more force you are putting on
the kick. This is why there is such a great emphasis on the follow through of a soccer kick.
Principle Three:
The production of maximum velocity requires the use of joints in order, from largest to smallest.
The athlete will need to go through the force producing movements to be able to complete a
successful soccer kick. This section of the sports skill primarily has to do with the fact that you
use your muscles moving from largest to smallest in order to create maximum velocity. This
concept is in direction relation to the third principle because when a soccer kick is being
executed, the joints move from the use of your hips, to your knees, to your ankles and all the way
down to your toes (as you plantarflex).
Principle Five:
Movement usually occurs in the direction opposite of that of the applied

Celie Vs Spielberg
The book and motion picture The Color Purple is a compelling story of a one Celie who finds her
womanhood and humanity with help from the other characters. From her abusive father and
husband to her loving friend Shrug Avery, a strong woman known for her voice, Celie takes a long
journey into personal freedom. Both Walker and Spielberg use
Celie s experiences to convey how her struggles allow her to come into her womanhood, however,
Walker tells the story through a darker and hopeless lens whereas Spielberg presents the pain
through a much less negative perspective.
Both Alice walker and Steven Spielberg portray Celie s struggles in detail, however, Spielberg

Shrug. When Mr. gets home from meeting Shrug, Celie wants to ask a million questions about her

BRAND LOYALTY/STORE LOYALTY
France is now about brand loyalty since most of the people go to grocery stores to do their
shopping. There are no real differences between grocery stores, and they almost all fight for prices,
proposing the same brands, so comparison is easy. Nevertheless, French people don t like to change
the brands that they consume. That is why new brands have to be very persuasive and incentive by
proposing samples, coupons etc.
The french market is particular concerning the way it strives to inform customers. There are a lot
of regulations and legal rules that have to be respected in order to communicate. For example, it
is forbidden to advertise cigarettes or books everywhere, and movies anywhere else other than on
a poster. Nevertheless, the french population has a good access to the traditional media and half of
the population uses internet at least once a day . The literacy rate is close to 100% and the country
is ranked 16 worldwide according to the Human Development Index (HDI) . In others words, those
capacities prevent any difficulties in making the message reach the consumers.

Summary Of Marxist Reading Of Octavia Butler s Dawn
Marxist Reading of Octavia Butler s Dawn, Book One of the Xenogenesis Trilogy Butler s novel is
very complex and nuanced, with multiple themes and layers of meaning throughout the text. A
particularly overarching theme is that of contradictions and contrasts. One way this manifests is as
the ideological conflict between the the Oankali (the alien society in the story) human cultures, the
former being quite similar to how Karl Marxenvisioned the ideal society, (though neither he nor his
ideology is ever actually mentioned in the story).
Marxism is often and rightly criticised for being impossible to truly implement in human society
it always devolves into an oppressive regime. However, for the Oankali, this system that is, a
classless society with no government and no oppression appears to work very well. Because of
this, on the surface, Butler s story seems to simply reinforce Marxist ideals, but, as we will see, it
actually both reinforces and undermines them. Butler skillfully shows both the pros and cons of
Marxism and lets the reader make up his or her own mind.
While a Marxist like system works very well for the aliens, they themselves do not think this (or
any other system, for that matter) will work for the humans as they are. They assert that, [human]
bodies are fatally flawed and handicapped because [they] have a mismatched pair of genetic
characteristics which, without help, will destroy them (Part 1, ch. 5). What they mean is that, due

Black Canyon Coffee Case Notes Hitt 1 Essay
INTRODUCTION
Black Canyon Coffee (BCC) is a Thai based chain of coffee restaurants at the forefront of its
domestic specialty coffee market. This case incorporates content which can be used to illustrate a
broad range of strategic analysis, formulation, and implementation concepts. It is specifically about
matching the company s strategic choices with conditions in the environment. The case is set at a
juncture in time (2002) when the young company needs to clearly define organizational goals that
will guide BCC in an increasingly complex environment.
The case opens with background material on BCC and its founder. It establishes the market
conditions, consumption patterns, and competitive atmosphere of the specialty coffee business in ...

The Thai government is friendly to the interests of other Asian nationals, but protective of domestic
coffee producers. These policies suggest that regional chains would be welcome in the Thai market,
but that continued increases in imports of premium European coffees might be curbed.
As independent coffee shop owners struggle to achieve profitability and seek an exit strategy, BCC
should consider how an acquisition strategy could help the company achieve the objectives of its
domestic business strategy.
Predictions of industry consolidation imply that BCC cannot safely implement a tepid strategy. It
will need to decide if and how to devise a comprehensive international strategy or to retrench into a
domestic dominated strategy with the intent to fortify the home market.
Overall, the world wide market for coffee is enormous, and it continues to demonstrate an upward
growth trend. This provides Black Canyon Coffee with opportunities to expand its business
throughout the world. But other, larger coffee specialty companies will also be pursuing these
opportunities. Also, rising coffee demand in Asia exceeds growth levels in Western nations another
reason that an increase in foreign interests is expected in the Thai market. Black Canyon Coffee s
Managing Director Pong has recently initiated BCC s expansion into international territory. In

Toni Cade Bambara s The Lesson
Some experiences change a person and their outlook on life significantly. The process of
growing up can be gradual but when sudden things occur, it makes it harder for the individual to

lesson about the inequalities of social class and the significance of wealth among people. In the
process of these lessons, Sylvia loses some of the innocence that is connected to childhood as she
experiences the hardships and difficulties of the adult world. The educator who teaches Sylvia
this valuable lesson is characterized as the misfit in the story. She goes by the name of Miss

For one of her lessons that day, Miss Moore brings the children to downtown New York for a
field trip to FAO Schwarz. When arriving to Fifth Avenue, it becomes apparent that this is the
children s first impression on white culture. Considering they do not receive proper education
and live in a poorer area, it is uncommon for these kids to travel outside of their social bubble.
The first impression these children get is that white folks are very much different from them,
dressing in fancier clothes or so Sylvia says, . . . everybody dressed up in stockings. One lady in
a fur coat, hot as it is. White folks crazy (Bambara). Additionally, Sylvia s cousin, Sugar asks
Miss Moore, Can We Steal? when they are approaching the famous toy store. This would seem to
be a no brainer answer for most, but Sugar does not know any better and is asking a legitimate
question on her behalf. These are authentic feelings spoken from both the girls as they digest new
scenes of culture they ve never been exposed to. It is common when someone is experiencing
something new, that a no brainer question can be a significant learning lesson for them. The
importance here is Sylvia and Sugar are broadening their minds and viewing how others are

2000 Us Presidential Election Essay
Introduction
The US Presidential Election of 2000 featured George W. Bush and Al Gore. It will go down in
history as one of the most closest electionsВЎВ¦ in US history. It also goes down as one of the most
controversial. The final decision was based on just a few hundred votes in Florida. The controversy
began when the media prematurely declared the winner twice based solely on exit polls. They
finally conceded that the Florida count was just too close to predict. It would take a month before
the election was ultimately certified after numerous court challenges and vote recounts. Republican
candidate George W. Bushwas declared the winner of the FloridaВЎВ¦s 25 electoral votes. This

As in the past, the media was covering the all important election. They had always relied on exit
polls as the polls closed across the nation. In reality, the Florida results were just too close to call.
Nevertheless, that did not stop the media from doing so. Not once, but twice, major news media
outlets were erroneous in their report. Around 8pm, it was declared that Al Gore was the
projected winner of the electoral votes in the state of Florida. However, a couple of hours later,
the projection was retracted and restated as Florida as being too close to call. Then, just after
2am on November 8, the mistake was made for a second time. The major networks declared
George W. as the winner. This even led to Al Gore calling the Governor to concede. However, as
Gore prepared to address his supporters in Nashville, Tennessee, he was alert to the shrinking
numbers in BushВЎВ¦s lead. The final total was now less than one half of a percent lead in favor
of Bush. That immediately calls for a recount of votes under state law. Subsequently, Gore called
Bush and retracted his concession. It wasnВЎВ¦t over yet! One thing was, Al Gore had prevailed in
the popular vote but without FloridaВЎВ¦s tally, the electoral vote was up in the air. The election
wasnВЎВ¦t over and the recounts began.

David Moser Why Chinese Is So Damn Hard
Comments on David Moser s Why Chinese is so damn hard
This essay is going to discuss the article Why Chinese is so damn hard by David Moser. In the
article, Moser employed a humorous tone to point out nine reasons why Chinese is challenging for
adult foreigners like himself to learn and why Chinese is difficult itself. In the following
paragraphs, I am focusing on one of the arguments Moser proposed Chinese s writing system just
ain t very phonetic , and will present my opinions on the wordings he used and the presentation of
the issue.
In his article, Moser stated Chinese not being phonetic is one of the reasons why westerners find it
difficult to learn it. He pointed out that in English, there are at least some correspondences between
sound and spelling. It helps non native speakers learning the language. However, in Chinese, save
those with radical and phonetic components, there are no clues at all for readers. The author also
demonstrated his experience of learning French, which is a phonetic language. He heard the word
amortisseur from the radio several times and he recognised it on a sign by because the sounds he
constructed when reading the word is the same. One reinforces the other, as he described the
learning process. Yet, when he was in Taiwan, he could not read the word on the sign as there were
no indications of sound, or Moser said phonetically mute. The example shows how it is easier to
study phonetic languages than the others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to his statement, Because the writing system just ain t very phonetic , Moser believes a
large portion of Chinese character is not phonetic. At the same time, he does not rule out those
characters with a phonetic component. However, for non native speakers, it is difficult to notice the
pattern even they learn Chinese for a very long

Jerry Yu is considering whether to invest in Liuyang fireworks factory, so he made an evaluation of
the Chinese firework industry. Here is a brief identification of the issue:
1.1 History of fireworks:
There is an old line of the Chinese fireworks, which is tightly combined with varieties of
celebrations and festivals in China. Especially, Liuyang is known as the home of fireworks and
firecrackers and good at making varieties of fireworks. And fireworks and firecrackers has become

Department of Transportation. The fireworks are all of high quality, so no special storage was
required.
Also, in the most Europe, similar regulations were in place for safety considerations, only the
requirements were regarded as less stringent. In Canada, regulations were extremely restrictive.
However, over the past decade Chinese fireworks companies had made great strides in the Canadian
market.
As to the domestic market, during the 1990s, increased concerns over environmental pollution
and safety of human life and property led more and more cities to regulate he consumption of
fireworks and firecrackers. However, all this began to change in the mid 2000s. Beijing lifted a 12
year ban on fireworks in 2005 and other cities followed suit. Over the next ten years, many legal
restrictions were lifted.
Offensive strategy to increase the sales of fireworks:
Speaking of Liuyang, in 1997, seeing the decline of its fireworks sales, Liuyang Firecrackers and
Fireworks Industry Department, the government agency in charge of the overall development of
the pillar industry, decided to start an offensive strategy. First, it opened local offices in most of
the 29 provinces, major cities and regions to promote Liuyang fireworks. Second, it regulated the
prices that Liuyang fireworks companies could quote and sell in export sales. Third, it resorted to a
government to government relationship in order to secure contracts for large public fireworks

  • 2. George Pullman And Economic Depression Economic depression took a big toll on America, causing events like the Panic of 1893 which created the collapse of railroad overbuilding, which further led to the collapse of many banks. This depression affected George Pullman s company, causing him to take actions, making more of an impact than he ever thought. George Pullmanwas an American engineer and industrialist who founded his company. He created a community and environment that his workers lived and worked in. His company played a big role in the labor movement because they were a prime source for transportation. Overtime, companies grew and continued to grow by opening mines, overflowing the market with minerals such as silver. Faster construction meant building more railroads so more goods could be shipped. Building more railroads meant having more transportation and soon enough, the production rate was significantly lower than the sell rate since companies had more deliveries from the railroads. When economic depression hit, Pullman had to make some changes that would benefit the company but not the people of the community. Economic depression sparked conflicts that resulted in the Pullman Strike. George Pullman failed to create a compromise that would solve the worker s unfair wages, poor working conditions, and the lack of voice they had, and this resulted in a halt on the labor movement. Because of economic depression, George Pullman was forced to make changes in order to keep his company thriving. He then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Study Of Public Administration Since Woodrow Wilson (1889) published the article, a study of public administration , the main question in the field of public administration is how to govern a democratic and political entity. Given public administration conventionally concerns about civil servants and agencies in the executive branch, one among diverse and essential subfields is bureaucracyand organizational theory. In general, the development of studies on bureaucracy and organizational theory has gone through the period of classical theory to modern theory, and from modern theory to the advent of post modernism and post positivism. After historically reviewing the growth of knowledge on this subfield, forces behind the progress are the product of countless and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But with respect to the mean to this end, while the Federalist prefers centralized executive powers, the anti Federalist go another way suggested by communitarianism. In terms of organizational theories, there are at least two main streams at that time can be identified. The first is managerialism, including scientific management and human relation school. Basically, both focused on management strategies. Nevertheless, one focused on principles of management for formal organizations, the other cares more about psychological status and informal organizations. For scientific management, the founding father is Frederick Taylors (1912) who employed scientific methods, like natural science, to measure working loadings and should be working times for increasing efficiency and developing a fair payments systems. Under his guidance, Gulick (1937) and Urwick (1945) make efforts to propose several principles of organizational operations and design. The most famous one would be POSDCORB introduced by Gulick. On the other hand, Elton Mayor (1930), as conducting the Hawthorne experiment, found the benign presence of researchers would boost productivities, instead of changes in facilities in factories. Chester Barnard (1938) argued that organizations are cooperative system maintaining the dynamic balances between the needs of the organization and its employees. • 4. The United States 1932 Election Essay The United States 1932 Election Many historians believe that the 1932 election was a popularity competition, with the prize being the chief of the white house. This is because they thought that Hoover s inability to revive the depressed economy, and his lack of a personality that reaches out to the average American, provided Roosevelt (who was very popular) with a path to victory. I shall discuss this view, with points in favour and points that argue Roosevelt had an appealing policy and opinions that ensured his triumph which did not rely on Hoover s incompetence and lack of charm. Beginning with the points in favour, it becomes easy to understand the principle behind the aforementioned... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another point, which greatly affected Hoover s chances of winning, was his inconsistency in methods. At first, he was dependant on voluntarism (charities and businesses helping at their own will) to solve the problem of the depression. Hoover implemented the POUR organisation to help the unemployed, but it only used donated money. The charity Red Cross, by 1931 could only provide 75 cents a week for hungry families. The situation had developed far beyond the ability of private charity to cope (source 3). His inconsistency is shown when he alters his approach from opposing direct government aid and laissez fair (to leave alone), to intervention. He personally gave up a fifth of his income. In January, congress provided $2 billion in funding a new agency, the reconstruction finance corporation (which makes loans to large economic organisations) and in February, Hoover signed the Glass Steagell act, which allocated £750 million of gold reserves to businesses. However, what he did was too little too late. Roosevelt s strength was that he was quick to capitalise on the republicans failures in their approach of voluntarism and this gave him an advantage, as the American public was willing to try something new. Roosevelt once said in a speech for his election campaign in 1932: Whatever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Designing Products Of Artworks Based On Using The Knowledge The idea behind my project is the process to create products of artworks based on using the knowledge that I already know and use new and different techniques that I inquired and reflected upon. My plan is to create an inventory of merchandise which then I would be able to sell to clientele who wishes to own these pieces of art. I would also use the earning to buy more supplies that will be used to create more artworks. At the end of the year, I will count the amount of funds that was accumulated and spent, and my goal is to end up with a positive net sum amount. So in other words, I would make artwork that is appealing and creative as an artist, and then turning around and sell these paintings to potential customers who desire... The reflections that I make on paintings are always consistent, whether it was when I was starting on new paintings, or when I was continuing a painting the next day. The process that I took to make paintings was to first look for inspiration. Inspiration was always taken when the paintings were made. I would mainly use either Pinterest or Google, where I would just glance over images and picture what I can put on the canvas; I also used these sources for help, for example, I had trouble trying to paint a sunset, so I used this tool to aid me in my process. • 6. Rhetorical Analysis Of A More Perfect Union Senator Barack Obama had many issues throughout his campaign. Obama s speech, A More Perfect Union , delivered on March 18, 2008, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, conveyed many issues concerning racism throughout the United States, but it starts out stating how the founders of this nation constructed the Declaration of Independence, creating all men equal. Obama then begins to talk about his pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, and his racial remarks against America and Israel, as it is divisive at a time when we need unity , referring to the two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis going on at the time. (Obama 2) Obama remarks I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas, (Obama 1) because there is much criticism in his campaign due to his race. Obama argues that race is paralyzing our nation, and that it is still a major issue due to white privilege, and racial inequality. In the end, Obama hopes to move past the racial stalemate we ve been stuck in for years, (Obama 6) and wishes to improve health care, jobs, schools, and other social issues for the United States. There is not one rhetorical strategy used in this speech as ethos, pathos, and logos are all seen. Obama appeals to emotion very successfully reaching people affected by racial issues. Obama successfully uses allusion and repetition, along with personal anecdotes to relate with the audience. Ethos is a rhetorical strategy used to appeal to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Psychoanalytic Personality In Lord Of The Flies Psychoanalytic Personality Essay William Golding is a very strange man. The types of stories that he wrote are very demonic, strange, and very insane to the reader. His demonic ways of life all lead to him writing the novel, Lord of the Flies. Throughout the book, William Golding shows examples of Freud s characteristics of the three different types of personality. The three characters that show these examples are stranded on an island and showing whether or not they will have the civilized side of them left. ( Id, Egoand Super ego) The three characters on the island are Jack, Ralph, and Piggy. The first personality is ID. ID operates on the pleasure principle which is the idea that every impulse should be satisfied immediately, regardless of the consequences. When the ID achieves its demands, they then experience pleasure. When it is denied, they then experience unpleasure or tension. (McLeod) The best character from Lord of the Flies that fits this personality is Jack. Jack is willing to do anything for his clan of wild hooligans and that even means killing anything to protect them, for example killing the beast before it kills them all. Also, he is eager to make rules and punish those who break them, he makes others follow them but he doesn t follow those same rules that he creates.(Golding ) The other two characters are nothing like Jack but they do care about the others like Jack does. Philip Zimbardo s Prison Experiment In 1971, psychology professor Philip Zimbardo conducted an experiment led by a team of researchers which involved twenty four male participants who were predominantly white and of the middle class. The goal of the experiment was to test the hypothesis that the inherited personality traits of prison guards and actual prisoners are the main cause of violent and abusive behaviours in prisons. The selection method involved intentionally excluding anybody who had a criminal background, psychological impairment or any medical conditions. Zimbardo himself admitted that he was totally caught up in playing his role of prison warden and was so involved in the experiment that he begun to forget his sole purpose and what he truly needed to focus on. Miller (2004), stated the experiment concluded that negative situational forces overwhelmed the positive dispositional tendencies. This concludes that the experiment had in fact proved that when good people were put into evil, negative situations and environments, the evil triumphed over the good people. Many coping mechanisms for the situation were also witnessed, including 5 of the young men being so traumatized they had to leave the experiment within the first week. Other prisoners experienced emotional breakdowns and suffered with extreme amounts of stress from the prison guards and the environment they were surrounded by. Some participants who appeared to have adapted better than the others mindlessly followed orders and became unseeingly obedient to authority (Miller, 2004). The guards continued to dehumanize and degrade the prisoners more and more with every new day and night. The young men whom had taken on the role of prison guards were seen to be behaving sadistically and constantly inflicting humiliation on the prisoners whom have an inferior human status stigma surrounding them. Some guards reported that they were in fact enjoying inflicting the pain and mental games to these prisoners, which would usually be so out of character when not under the situational forces that they were (Miller, ... • 12. William Wordsworth s The Prelude And Lord Byron s Biting... The Romantic poets sought to write epics that incorporated new philosophies, ideals, and literary trends, while also parodying, satirizing and deconstructing the epic poem itself. Rather than merely extend the epic tradition, several Romantic poets subverted the characteristics and tropes attributed to epic poetry, creating an interesting revision of the epic. Two seminal works of Romantic poetry that adequately showcase the revision of epic tradition are William Wordsworth s introspective epic The Prelude and Lord Byron s biting epic satire Don Juan. Incorporating either introspection and reflection or irony and satire, both of these works incorporate themes from the epic tradition while also subverting its significant aspects,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How both Wordsworth and Byron transgress and subvert these themes, particularly the heroic ideal, not only separates Romantic epic poetry from classical epic poetry and epic tradition, but this revision results in the creation of a new tradition. Wordsworth is known for his introspection, often writing about feelings and emotions, mortality and nature. Wordsworth s The Prelude is a seminal work. The poem is about the growth of the poet s mind. It is autobiographical and deals with different periods of Wordsworth s life, such as his childhood, his time at Cambridge and his residence in France. The poem features Wordsworth reflecting on his experiences and feelings. The poem acts as a look into how he views himself as a poet. In The Politics of the Epic: Wordsworth, Byron, and the Romantic Redefinition of Heroism, author Paul Cantor contends that despite the use of epic writing, the poem itself is vastly different from the epic. It is written in an elevated blank verse that often has a Miltonic ring, it contains epic diction and epic similes, and it shows many other signs of Wordsworth s attempt to work within the established epic tradition. But if one looks at the beginning of the poem, where the epic poet traditionally invokes his Muse, one can see how radically Wordsworth differs from his predecessor (Cantor, 377). The poem, Miltonic in its style and diction, does seem to mimic the Miltonic epic style, at least somewhat. This does not mean, however, that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However the historical re enactment of the 1759 battle was cancelled by The National Battlefields Commission for security concerns that could, as CBC News wrote, turn into a modern day conflict. There is speculation other factors influenced the withdrawal of the re enactment such as the overwhelming negative responses from the francophones in Quebec. Parti Quebecois was also blamed for the cancellation for their statement that event is a slap in the face to Quebecers of French ancestry (CBC News) which got a rise out of those in support of this political group as they began trying to stop the event. The statement released by Parti Quebecois definitely had a hand in spreading awareness of the negative opinions of the re enactment which ultimately led to large group of people opposed to the event resulting in the cancellation. All in all, to those in charge, the cancellation of the event was about keeping innocent families out of harm s way, preventing a modern day Battle based on the historical one from occurring, and maintaining a civil status between the French and English in Quebec. Although the threats of violence from activist groups were the official reason given for the cancellation of the re enactment, there are speculations of other reasons as to why the federal body made this decision. At this critical moment of history, what impresses us first from the name of this protest is a power of space: Hong Kong people, who is regarded as the peripheral of China, by occupying the Central (a sub center), strive for becoming visible and hearable to the center (Beijing) to resist their doomed future: an ostensible direct election in 2017, or even worse political sufferings that people cannot imagine. This highly intense political anxiety related to the mainland, since the postwar period, has accompanied Hong Kongpeople and been deeply internalized into their spatiotemporal experience. Based on a novella named Nothing Happened (д»Ђд№€й ѓЅжІЎжњ‰еЏ‘з”џ) from Hong Kong writer Chan Koon chung, this paper tries to investigate how the Hong Kong protagonist s anxiety of the future of his city, a temporal experience, however appears within a spatial, or precisely, geopolitical form, and furthermore, the paper tries to trace beneath the anxiety to the trauma that is interweaved with the (post)coloniality of Hong Kong. As Ackbar Abbas points out: Hong Kong has no precolonial past to speak of (2). Initially, Hong Kong is a colonial city strategically located and established at an intermediary point, not only as the geographical intermediary of the continent and the sea, weaving the mainland China into the colonial/global capitalist system since the middle 19th century, but also ... Color Purple Archetypes Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple, portrays the main character Celie as an introverted butterfly who has yet to come out of her cocoon, hiding away from confrontation and actions that could cause negative reactions. As the story progresses, she blossoms before the reader, becoming more present in her world where she would otherwise be shuttered in. Her character development is due to the introduction of two very empowering and independent women, acting as female archetypes throughout the novel. Shug, a woman with a fiery personality that ignites inspiration in Celie to further herself as a woman, is the main focal point of the female archetype in this novel. Celie wants to change herself; not to fit into the mold in which Shug has pushed herself into, but to better her life. Shug s personality was able to rid Celie of the internal dark cloud living inside her. Shug is clearly identified as a female archetype throughout the novel; an empowering woman who stands against the odds she has been faced with. The thought of vampires automatically makes me think of blood, fire and evil activities. I have always wondered why vampires seem to not like rosary. As I read Dracula I noticed that he did not like rosary which is associated with Christ. After reading Dracula, I was able to determine that it is not the rosary object itself, but the thought of what the object actually is. Bram Stoker s version of Draculawas associated with a Christian theme. Dracula was evil which would typically not be associated with anything Christian like so he was opposed to it. The article that was the most appealing to me relating to Dracula and religion is called VampireReligion by Christopher Herbert. The article expressed the religious symbols in Bram Stoker s Dracula. The article also discussed how the people of Transylvania were very superstitious. Herbert goes on to discuss how Stoker incorporates Christianity and vampirism in Dracula. Herbert s article interested me because I noticed how Dracula s actions and Jonathan Harker s beliefs clashed in the book. Moreover, Herbert s article spoke in depth about the various religious symbols shown in Stoker s Dracula. Herbert stated, Its characters pray constantly for the intercession of Almighty God in their struggles with the demonic; they cross themselves, brandish crucifixes, and invoke the protective powers of communion wafers (Herbert 100). ... Luhrmann s interpretation has turned Shakespeare s traditional tale of a tragic love story into a modern and urbanised 20th century version. Luhrmann s adaptation keeps the classic story of Romeo and Juliet true. This is seen by still having the constant feud between the Montague and Capulet family and the countless tragedies, yet Luhrmann adds a 20th century twist by using guns instead of swords and replacing horses with cars. The main characters remain as Romeo and Juliet, although there is a greater focus on them than their parents. The events take place in Verona, however, it is at Verona Beach in Florida, not Italy. If the students came across a technique or type of artwork that they wanted to try, the school and Ms. Wood made that happen. She had high school teachers and college professors present their studies and beliefs to the students in order to widen their perspectives and outlook on the art community. For example, they had the opportunity to watch a high school teacher come and create pieces of pottery on the wheel. • 45. Summary Of Marxist Reading Of Octavia Butler s Dawn Marxist Reading of Octavia Butler s Dawn, Book One of the Xenogenesis Trilogy Butler s novel is very complex and nuanced, with multiple themes and layers of meaning throughout the text. A particularly overarching theme is that of contradictions and contrasts. One way this manifests is as the ideological conflict between the the Oankali (the alien society in the story) human cultures, the former being quite similar to how Karl Marxenvisioned the ideal society, (though neither he nor his ideology is ever actually mentioned in the story). Marxism is often and rightly criticised for being impossible to truly implement in human society it always devolves into an oppressive regime. However, for the Oankali, this system that is, a classless society with no government and no oppression appears to work very well. Because of this, on the surface, Butler s story seems to simply reinforce Marxist ideals, but, as we will see, it actually both reinforces and undermines them. Butler skillfully shows both the pros and cons of Marxism and lets the reader make up his or her own mind. While a Marxist like system works very well for the aliens, they themselves do not think this (or any other system, for that matter) will work for the humans as they are. They assert that, [human] bodies are fatally flawed and handicapped because [they] have a mismatched pair of genetic characteristics which, without help, will destroy them (Part 1, ch. 5).
