The solar sysTem


The solar system is made up of planets that orbit the
sun. The Sun is a star.



Eight planets orbit the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth ,
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.



The Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the Moon
is its satellite. The Moon orbits the Earth. The Sun, the
Planets, satellites, meteors, comets, and asteroid are
celestial bodies.



These means that they are natural objects from the sky.

moon takes about 28 days to orbit the
Earth and it rotates on its axis at the same
time. The Moon reflects the light from the
Sun. The phases of the moon are: New
moon, Crescent moon, First quarter, Full
moon, Third quarter and Crescent moon.

 The

Earth rotates on its axis and this rotation is
why we have day and night. It takes twenty-four
hours to rotates on its axis.
 The Earth’s axis is tilted. When the Earth orbits
the Sun, one hemisphere receives more light
and heat than the other. This causes different
climates on Earth and different seasons.
 When it’s winter in the northern hemisphere, it’s
summer in the southern hemisphere and when
it’s summer in the northern hemisphere it’s
winter in the southern hemisphere.
Maps and Globes
 We

use maps and globes to show the Earth.
Maps show the Earth as flat and globes show
the Earth as a sphere.
 The Equator divides the Earth into the northern
hemisphere and the southern hemisphere.
 Lines of latitude go horizontally around the Earth
but lines of longitude go vertically around the
Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole.
