Virtual Environments and Web 3D – New Worlds with Old Problems?Tracy Kennedy
In 2003, Linden Research Inc launched the virtual world Second Life with a small community of residents. In the past year, Second Life reached a tipping point; almost nine million residents are registered in the Metaverse, and there are numerous daily media accounts about life in the virtual world.
The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of Second Life, and examine the appeal of an interactive three dimensional interface that has encouraged new leisure and social activities, business and marketing ventures, educational opportunities, political platforms, arts and entertainment and much more. Second Life also features its own media hub, which includes magazines, news sites and agencies, weblogs and television stations, covering new fashions for avatars, music concerts by popular artists, community affairs, and economic reports.
However, virtual worlds are not inherently utopian; with new environments come old social problems from the ‘real’ world. This presentation will also address some of the debates that have surfaced about social norms and behaviours in Second Life, what the future of virtual worlds might entail, and whether Second Life hype is a passing fad or a the development of Web 3.0/3D.

School libraries are at the heart of a new digital learning nexus. Our world changed in April 1993 when the Mosaic 1.0 browser was released to the general public. The challenges we face are equally creative as they are complex. What is your focus for tomorrow?
Here's my presentation at NewComm Forum 2010: "Social and Entrepreneurial: The Paths to the New Journalism," a look at the fast-evolving journalism and social media landscape, the opportunities for new players, and why the old guard won't survive if they don't make significant changes to their corporate cultures.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
Hello, my name is Obisam1 Canetti. I am an avatar and currently exist only in the virtual world of Second Life. During this next decade I will be able to exist in many different virtual worlds and will start connecting with the physical world through augmented reality. I would like to introduce my physical representation, Bill Sams. Bill exists in what used to be called the misnamed real world but will increasingly understood to be the physical world. Bill’s world is limited by the laws of physics so he cannot fly, teleport or be in the same place with friends from around the world at a moments notice. Bill’s world is very difficult to change and in fact his world with weather, distances and humanoid problems does more to control him than he does to control it. Virtual worlds on the other hand offer the potential for infinite creativity, collaboration and sharing. They offer the ultimate in both human control and freedom. So I would like to now turn the presentation over to Bill in the physical world of your darken room with the uncomfortable chairs for a primitive synchronous presentation on virtual worlds, social networks and augmented reality. Good afternoon Bill.
