Synopsis What Contributions to Education Benefits Drawbacks Location Based Services (LBS) Customized information available on demand Deliver information to users directly in the environment Don’t want to waste time, walk into something Serious Gaming Clear set of rules, attainable goals, competition, engagement Motivating, fun, challenging Frustration, disinterest Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) Distributed content, generated by autonomous individuals Sense of ownership, place-based information, room for two way interaction Privacy, bias, ontology

  • Plain black background, photos of smartphones along the bottom.
  • Researchers, it is our responsibility to find ways that work, governments and others, try them out!
  • Part of an information system The determination of the position of a mobile in/output device is a direct requirement for every system to be called LBS. Positioning has to be adequate to the service in terms of a dependent relationship and adapted to the tasks. Screen shots from over the weekend, define
  • Other location based services include, restaurant suggestions, business directions, or finding your way to a specific address.
  • Open Street Maps clearly displays the key building blocks for a successful VGI project identified by Gouviea. Other examples include, georeferencing our photos, showing you running route from the weekend, the Christmas bird count, the list goes on and if you can not find examples of VGI that interest you....add your own!
  • Another popular way people are using their mobile devices for is gaming Gaming is a relatively untapped resource for educators and governments. As geographers and educators we could use games to help communicate and teach people through the use of serious gaming.
  • Metal stimulation and challenge Social interaction- we play games to compete with others as well as cooperate with team mates. Location based games offer a unique physical challenge that can be thrilling to some people, think of the amazing race, or live pac man on NYC streets.
  • Often times during game play offers opportunity for direct interaction with the content which can result in skill practice and knowledge acquisition. When the player is in control of their gaming environment this an often lead to increased sense of presence and interactivity.
  • People are already using location based gaming through these applications. Some people are using LBS competitively to share information with their friends about where they are, where they have been and where they are going. It is primarily business using these applications to attract clients. From the data collected from these location based games they can track the movements and the habits of their customers almost like location based web analytics. Business can also communicate with the players by offering them coupons and discounts when they become active players.
  • Promotion- offer rewards to participants such as lunch with the actual mayor or we will put your photo on our website.
  • “ Foursquare provides a great incentive for people to explore the City’s diverse neighborhoods by playing a fun and interactive game,” says Dorothy Coyle, Director of the Chicago Office of Tourism. “We’re excited to be pioneering this innovative service.” “By partnering with a city entity, we’re offering Foursquare players a new angle on discovering the city around them,” says Tristan Walker, Head of Business Development at Foursquare“ Adding these Chicago-specific badges encourages users to try out new businesses and promote lesser-known landmarks.” They even have a badge for film buffs to reenact their favorite movies… If you contact them they will likely help you and partner with you. http://www.explorechicago.org/city/en/about_the_city/press_room/chicago_office_of/Foursquare.html
  • First context about our research. AT the Spatial Interface research lab we are interested in creating applications for education about the environment. We are partnering with British Columbia Green Schools to incorporate their curriculum into out application. This afternoon I will share with you the preliminary research I have conducted thus far for designing a location based game. Location based games offer a promising new opportunity for participatory governance and education. Let me first describe what location based games are and some of the key components.

  • How do these methods of interacting with geospatial data influence how we understand the information being presented? Are we able to learn more, faster? Are learners able to make better informed decisions?
  • As researchers, it is our challenge to identify and develop innovative approaches for enhancing the use of these exciting platform and services so we can improve the quality of environmental education and increase participatory governance.
  • Can treat these separately or all together. Should I take out AR all together for AAG , leave it in for class What about social networking? have text that I am talking about White, when finished turn gray
