Concept of Management
Management is the attainment of
organizational goals in an effective and
efficient manner through planning,
organizing, leading and controlling
organizational resources.
Two important ideas are expressed in
this definition:
(1) the four functions of planning,
organizing, leading and controlling. (2)
the attainment of organizational goals in
an effective and efficient manner.

figure 1.1 explain the way managers use resources
to attain organizational goals. And there are
additional functions are discussed as subsets of the
four primary functions in figure 1.1.

The four management functions
The functions of planning, organizing,
leading and controlling are integral to the
role of a manager.
Planning
defines where the organization wants to
be in the future and how to get there.
Planning means defining goals for future
organizational performance and deciding
the tasks and use of resources needed
to attain them.

Organizing
Organizing typically follows planning and
reflects the way the organization tries to
accomplish the plan. Organizing involves
the assignment of tasks, the grouping of
tasks into departments, and the
allocation of resources to departments.
Leading
Providing leadership is becoming an
increasingly important management
function. Leading is the use of influence
to motivate employees to achieve
organizational goals.

Controlling
Controlling is the fourth function in the
management process. Controlling means
monitoring employee's activities, In this
function managers must ensure that the
organization is moving towards its goals.
New trends towards empowerment of
employees have lead many
organizations to give less emphasis on
top-down control and more emphasis on
training employees to monitor and
correct themselves.

Levels of Management
There are different types of management
positions or levels designed to handle all
aspects of business.
1. Top Management
2. Middle Management
3.First Line Management or Bottom
Management.
Top Management is focused on
design and implementation of the firm's
overall strategy. At this level,
management must always be aware of
the firm's external threats and

Top management assumes responsibility
for analyzing current information and
planning for the future. Management at
this level is guided by the vision. The
vision is a clear statement of where the
firm is going ? what it will be like ? when
it arrives ? The vision statement is
generally a carefully worded statement
about top management's dream for the
future expressed in measurable
objectives. As part of the planning
process to achieve the vision, top
management usually creates a mission

The mission statement is a public
statement about issues that the firm feels
are very important as it goes about its
vision quest. It often suggests limits and
conditions that the firm must strive to
maintain. Examples of content would be,
"…provide quality products to …", "…
respect all employees …", "… be a
member of the community …", "… our
stockholders will earn". The mission
expresses management's fundamental
principlesphilosophy of how a business
should be run.

Middle Management
This management directly involved in the
implementation of strategic initiatives
developed by top management. They
bridge the gap between top management
and First Line Management .

organization such as :
1. Technical Expertise: Do I have the
computer skills and knowledge to

2. Analytical skills: How do I sort out and
interpret all this information ?
3. Leadership skills: Can I influence
employees to work toward the firm's
goals?
4. People skills: Can I get a group or

5. Critical Thinking Skills: Do I
understand the concepts involved in the
problem? Do I have the history of the
problem and how this problem is
integrated into other aspects of the firm ?
First-line management perform
operational duties and preside over non-
management employees. Examples of
first line managers are department chair
