Opening for Director of Master’s of Human-Computer Interaction
Program at Carnegie Mellon University
The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon
University invites applications for the position of Director of the world-renowned professional Masters in
Human-Computer Interaction (MHCI), to begin in the fall term of 2014 or earlier. This position is a
career-oriented appointment for a dedicated, passionate advocate of human-centered design methods to
change the world through training the next generation of HCI professionals.
The Director will continue our tradition of mentoring students to prepare them for professional roles in
the human computer interaction field, acting as a liaison to other academic departments and our industry
capstone sponsors, communicating with the public, and in other ways ensuring the continued quality and
reputation of the MHCI. The director will also assist in managing relations with the strong and exuberant
alumni base of the MHCI, and recruiting new students who will enrich our community. The director will
also work with the faculty in innovating and expanding on the MHCI curriculum and laying out a vision
for the future of professional education in human-computer interaction and user experience design.
The Human-Computer Interaction Institute was the first department of HCI in the country, and opened the
Masters in Human-Computer Interaction in 1994. Since then it has graduated more than 600 alumni who
have gone on to work at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IDEO, Pixar, Apple, IBM, NASA,
Boeing, Mozilla, Bloomberg, Nokia, Yahoo, Adobe, Frog Design, SRI, Autodesk, Hewlett-Packard,
Samsung, and Oracle, just to name a few. Over the past 19 years several of our alumni have come home
to teach in the MHCI, and 2 have become Directors.
The new Director will become an integral part of the vibrant HCII community at CMU. In addition to its
celebrated faculty, and the intellectual acumen of its students, the HCII is known for its warm atmosphere
and generosity of spirit. The new Director will be expected to keep an open door for students, and to
participate in fostering the both rigorous and mutually-supportive atmosphere for which the MHCI is
known.
Applicants for the Director position must have a BS, BA, MHCI, MFA, MS, or Ph.D. in one of the main
disciplines of HCI (HCI, computer science, design, psychology or another social science) or a related
field, and have familiarity with research and evaluation methods and user-centered design, as well as
leadership skills. Preference will be given to candidates with substantial industry experience in HCI or
user experience design. Experience in teaching, managing teams, mentoring individuals, or managing a
product or business is also preferred.

Applications must be in PDF format and include (1) curriculum vitae, (2) statement of teaching
philosophy, (3) link to an online portfolio of representative HCI work, and (4) names, titles, and email
addresses of three or more individuals who may be asked to provide letters of reference.
All materials should be submitted via email to: <hcii-mhci-search@cs.cmu.edu>. Incomplete applications
will not be processed. Applications should indicate citizenship and, for non-US citizens, current visa
status.
The HCII will begin reviewing applications on January 27, 2014.

Opening for Director of Master’s of Human-Computer Interaction Program at Carnegie Mellon University The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for the position of Director of the world-renowned professional Masters in Human-Computer Interaction (MHCI), to begin in the fall term of 2014 or earlier. This position is a career-oriented appointment for a dedicated, passionate advocate of human-centered design methods to change the world through training the next generation of HCI professionals. The Director will continue our tradition of mentoring students to prepare them for professional roles in the human computer interaction field, acting as a liaison to other academic departments and our industry capstone sponsors, communicating with the public, and in other ways ensuring the continued quality and reputation of the MHCI. The director will also assist in managing relations with the strong and exuberant alumni base of the MHCI, and recruiting new students who will enrich our community. The director will also work with the faculty in innovating and expanding on the MHCI curriculum and laying out a vision for the future of professional education in human-computer interaction and user experience design. The Human-Computer Interaction Institute was the first department of HCI in the country, and opened the Masters in Human-Computer Interaction in 1994. Since then it has graduated more than 600 alumni who have gone on to work at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IDEO, Pixar, Apple, IBM, NASA, Boeing, Mozilla, Bloomberg, Nokia, Yahoo, Adobe, Frog Design, SRI, Autodesk, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, and Oracle, just to name a few. Over the past 19 years several of our alumni have come home to teach in the MHCI, and 2 have become Directors. The new Director will become an integral part of the vibrant HCII community at CMU. In addition to its celebrated faculty, and the intellectual acumen of its students, the HCII is known for its warm atmosphere and generosity of spirit. The new Director will be expected to keep an open door for students, and to participate in fostering the both rigorous and mutually-supportive atmosphere for which the MHCI is known. Applicants for the Director position must have a BS, BA, MHCI, MFA, MS, or Ph.D. in one of the main disciplines of HCI (HCI, computer science, design, psychology or another social science) or a related field, and have familiarity with research and evaluation methods and user-centered design, as well as leadership skills. Preference will be given to candidates with substantial industry experience in HCI or user experience design. Experience in teaching, managing teams, mentoring individuals, or managing a product or business is also preferred.
