Diversity Equality Inclusive Initiatives in UCC and USC
The goal of the International Librarians Networking Program (ILNP) is to assist librarians from around the world to network and expand their skills in librarianship through a cooperative and collaborative program. The program is designed to be self guided, allowing participants to form a collaborative relationship with one another for four months and the opportunity to continue networking after the program ends. The International Librarians Networking Program is part of the American Library Association International Relations Round Table.
The 2021 cohort comprised 62 people from 27 countries selected for pair networking. There had been 270 original applicants from 39 different countries. I was paired with Dr Win Shih, Director of Integrated Library Systems at the University of Southern California. The ILNP final project was to create an academic poster arising from the conversations during the four month period. We completed one on Diversity Equality Inclusion initiatives in UCC & USC.
50 ideas
This document proposes several ideas to raise awareness of and interest in the library and information science profession:
1) Change the profession name in Brazil, which currently focuses only on libraries, to something broader that appeals more to young people and better represents the field.
2) Create a huge unified database connecting all public library databases around the world, similar to existing databases for music and movies. Launching this project could generate significant attention for the profession.
3) Produce a viral funny cartoon poking fun at librarianship stereotypes and other professions to leverage humor and popularity to mainstream the field.

The presentation discussed the current literature on outsourcing which has differing opinions, outlined what parts of the cataloging process libraries typically outsource like copy cataloging and physical processing, and shared comments from current catalogers about their experiences with outsourcing. Catalogers noted that outsourcing requires oversight to ensure quality and that libraries still need in-house staff, but that it can work if the relationship with the vendor is functional and communication is strong.What are Libraries Good For?
Libraries serve several important purposes according to experts. They act as cultural storehouses that preserve the best of human thought and ideas. Libraries also organize and provide access to information, playing a crucial role in preserving knowledge for future generations. While digital formats are increasing access, physical books still have educational value for deep, meditative reading that some argue is nearly impossible on screens. There remains no proven method for long-term digital preservation comparable to the endurance of printed materials. As such, libraries should continue maintaining traditional collections of books and materials in addition to digital resources.

What are Libraries Good For?
Libraries serve several important purposes according to experts. They act as cultural storehouses that preserve the best of human thought and ideas. Libraries also organize and provide access to information, playing a crucial role in preserving knowledge for future generations. While digital formats are increasing access, physical books still have educational value for deep, meditative reading that some argue is nearly impossible on screens. There remains no proven method for long-term digital preservation comparable to the endurance of printed materials. As such, libraries should continue maintaining traditional collections of books and materials in addition to digital resources.
