This document summarizes a study that used dynamic simulation to analyze the behavior of rectangular aluminum tubes under direct and oblique impact loads. It investigated tubes of various diameters, thicknesses, and foam fill weights. The objectives were to compare performance parameters like energy absorption capacity, peak force, and crush force efficiency (CFE) to identify the optimal design. Simulation results showed that tubes with hollow aluminum foam had up to 76.4% higher energy absorption, 44% higher CFE under direct loads, and 73.4% higher energy absorption and 22.5% higher CFE under oblique loads compared to empty tubes. Choosing thinner tubes and less foam helped minimize weight while still enhancing energy absorption and CFE.
