Significant impediment to effective competition (SIEC test)7 CRITICAL APPROACH TO EU
MERGER CONTROL SINCE THE ADOPTION OF REGULATION 139/2004 I.Introduction In
2004 Reg.139/2004 replaced the existing 4064/89 Merger Control Regulation, thus marking a
milestone in EU merger control. The new regulation provided for the implementation of a new kind
of substantive test as well as certain procedural changes. Compared to its practice prior to the

More explicitly, the importance given to efficiencies as a defence to otherwise problematic mergers,
the creation of the office of the chief economist, the guidelines regarding horizontal mergers, and
more importantly the introduction of the new significant impediment of effective competition test
(SIEC) are the main indicators of the shift in merger policy. The introduction of the new substantive
test based on the concept of significant impediment of effective competition is the most important
aspect of the competition policy revision. The wording of the Regulation 4064/89 implied that the
merger review process involved a two stage test. The second element of the test, the impediment of
effective competition, was rarely applied in practice because it was presumed to result only from
the creation or strengthening of a dominant position. That was the main criticism regarding the old
dominance test, because in effect, the dominance test allowed mergers resulting in lessening of
competition without the creation of a dominant position to go un challenged. Under the new rule,
dominance is only an example for a significant impediment of effective competition, and thus proof
of dominance is no longer a necessary condition in order for the Commission to challenge a merger.
This dissertation focuses on the most significant developments introduced by Reg.139/2004. More
particularly it will concentrate on the revised substantive test

The Purpose of the Biblical Flood narrative
The Old Testament can be described as an anthology of the literature of ancient Israel and early
Judaism (Coogen 2008) that contains many forms of writings and stories which address not only
myth, main historical events and laws, but also those that follow the Israelites unique
relationship with God. The first book of the Old Testament is known as Genesis, which is highly
concerned with the world s creation and its initial stages. It is also the origin of the biblical Flood
Narrative concerning Noah and the Ark. The story is characterised by a man that is instructed to
build an ark under the guidance of God, and take with him family members and pairs of animals, to
survive a catastrophic universal flood. The flood narrative belongs... Show more content on

Ea, a god that is unhappy with the idea of flooding the world, secretly instructs Utnapishtim to build
a boat and to take with him animals in order to survive the impending flood.
Tear down the house and build a boat! Abandon wealth and seek living beings! Spurn all
possessions and keep alive living beings! Make all living things go up in the boat! The boat which
you are to build, its dimensions must be equal to each other: (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI).
Similarly God says to Noah; I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled
with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth. Make
yourself and ark of cypress wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.
This is how you are to make it: (Gen 6:13 15, NRSV). Later in the chapter God reveals to Noah;
For my part I am going to bring a flood of water to the earth (Gen 6:17, NRSV) and instructs
Noah to bring into the ark of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind
into the ark, to keep them alive with you: (Gen 6:19, NRSV). Another example of the parallels
within each story is the description of everything being submerged by water. In the Epic of
Gilgamesh it reads The sea calmed, fell still, the whirlwind (and) flood stopped up. I looked
around all day long quiet had set in and all the human beings had turned to clay! The terrain was
as flat as a roof. (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). The

the help of his mom with natural things she took part in , as a child Pollan indeed had experience

Risk Reduction by Diversification of Porfolio
Over a long time horizon researchers have contradictory views about investment in portfolio, are
Put all your eggs in one basket and Don t put all your eggs in one basket . The latter one is
supported by many and known as diversification [7]. Diversification is associated with reducing
risk and maximizing returns of investors and portfoliomanagers i.e. risk return trade off. An investor
gets benefitted by spreading his scarce resources over various assets [2, 8] which maximizes return
and minimizes risk.
Diversification is needed to minimize volatility i.e. measure of risk and maximize return. After the
global financial crisis in US and Eurozone crisis, market is continuously enduring high volatility.
Increased market volatility imposed much risk to investments which can be minimized by using
diversification effects of other types of financial portfolio securities [9]. The phenomenon to be
considered can be correlation between two securities.
The pioneer and elegant model given by H. Markowitz [2] and J. Tobin [3], analyzed in his
research that risk reduction by diversification of portfolio closely depends upon correlation of mean
returns of individual securities of portfolio. H. Markowitz also analyzed about portfolio
diversification that if there is low correlation between two securities then there are more portfolio
risk diversification benefits. While correlation between securities shows direct relation with
portfolio diversification benefits but the argument

Viewing America with Geology Essay
America has changed through the years in many ways. Medicine has improved, average standard
of living has risen, and the overall quality of life has changed drastically over the course of time.
Yet, these are all short term ideals when taken into the whole picture. Although all of this is
important, to truly understand the actual face of America, we have to think farther back than a
few hundred years. The face of America can best be portrayed in thinking about how America
looks the way it does. Questions like How did the Rocky mountains form? or Why are the Great
Plains located where they are? These types of questions are important because once you figure out
why certain areas have the qualities that they do, it becomes simpler to... Show more content on

This is one, but not the only way to make the phenomenon we know as earthquakes. This fault has
not only caused trouble in the past but is likely to bring devastating destruction in the relatively
near future. San Francisco had an earthquake, because of this fault, in April 1906 killing over 700
people and causing millions in damage (San). If a new earthquake were to happen it would kill
thousands of American citizens along the west coast. Consequently, there would be a major drop in
population over there which could reduce the amount of production created in this region all tying
back into why the geological aspect of America is a main determining factor for seeing the
importance of why America has the properties it has and will have in the future. Another well
known geological phenomenon in the United States is Yellowstone Park. Yellowstone is an
extraordinary example of a caldera which is defined as a volcanic crater that has a diameter many
times that of the vent and is formed by collapse of the central part of a volcano or by explosions of
extraordinary violence (USGS). Since Yellowstone is a caldera, it means that there had been
previous volcanic eruptions in this area and in this case two eruptions. The first explosion happened
over 2,000,000 years ago because the composition of the magma contained vast traces of explosive
matter that caused the eruption (USGS). The second incident happened around

Button Button Analysis
In, Button, Button, the author, Richard Matheson introduces Norma and Arthur Lewis. The button
causes temptations that lead to conflicts between the two characters. In the narrative, Mr. Steward
arrives at the house and tells them about the button. If one of them pushes the button, someone will
die, and they will receive a grand total of $50,000. This causes a dramatic conflictbetween the two.
It brings the worst out of the two of them, causing jealousy, selfishness, and acquisitiveness. Norma
has to make a decision whether to press the button or not. She contemplates and then eventually to
press the button. Matheson uses dialogue, inner thinking, description, and symbolism to develop
the central conflicts in the story and to accentuate how relationships break off even in the best
circumstances. Richard Mathesonuses dialogue to develop conflict in the story. The use of dialogue
is utilized to represent situational irony. In Button, Button the text states:
You said I wouldn t know the one that died.
My dear lady... Do you really think you knew your husband? (Matheson 111).
Additionally, this conversation indicates the situational irony revealed by between the two
characters: Norma and Mr. Steward. Mrs. Lewis didn t believe her husband would be the one that
dies. She didn t realize that she was so self absorbed and never truly knew her husband. This
conversation between two characters leaves the readers on a cliffhanger. Readers were also not
aware that Mr. Lewis would

All criminal s first offenses should automatically be sentenced to a rehabilitation facility. Jail is
going to do nothing but aggravate the offender. Sending them to treatment can possibly change
their mindset and mentality. In order to put this plan into effect, we will need approval of
higher authorities to build these facilities. The biggest concern will be the cost of the projects,
but overall it will benefit the community greatly. In retrospect, these treatment facilities will
actually cost less to care for the patients than they would if they were initially placed in a jail or
prison cell. One full year of methadone maintenance treatment is approximately $4,700 per
patient, whereas one full year of imprisonment costs approximately $24,000 per person (

The Cigar By J. L Freeman Analysis
In a parallel universe where the consequences for not being a Christian in America is much more
apparent than our own: Religion, for thousands of years, has dulled man kind s senses to see the
lovely light of logic. It has, in point of fact, been the pinnacle of many wars, and caused many a
bloodshed; it has seized our minds and, as a master puppeteer, pulled the strings of fate. Yet the
question remains, and a grand question it is: in America, which subjects and/or events should the
influence of religioncease its reign? The opaque answer, still wet with Heraclitus like
metaphysics, had never been so clear as J.L. Freeman stood before a jury and said thus unto it:
and if this be the case, then all Seraphs be damned to Hell! Yet, to be clear, this story does in fact
have an origin, hidden, of course, by the primitive man with his puzzling, primitive philosophy!
A single score and three years ago, at the age of fifty one, J.L. Freeman began his day. Perhaps he
smoked a cigar, downed espresso, continued his writing while looking at the natural, hostile world
for inspiration. And as he inhaled the cigar, smoke bonding to his throat, tongue and mind, he sat
upon that wonderful and expensive black leather seat of comfort (Yes! Perfection!). Then, as

Reflection In The Poetry Of Emily Dickinson sRoom
From another perspective. Sometimes lost, deep in thoughts, tough emotions and feelings.
Sometimes looking, staring but again not watching something. Sometimes imaging big dreams,
big things distracted in soul visions but never finding anything in reality. Surrounded by same
objects, life, people, big roads, big decisions, choices. We, the people we are unique, we are a
mosaic with rare, colorful pieces. The way we live the life, enjoy the world, see the things makes
us who we are. In dark or light, confident or not, walking or halting. Under the sun s beam, warm
and relieved; under the cold moon and shining stars that fill the black, mysterious, endless
sky, thinking in sadness. Often in reality; rarely in our mind. Every time contemplating the miracles
of the nature. Enjoying the infinite universe with just two finite eyes just enough. Every creature
that can see has a power. And all creatures have another one called the art of seeing vision.
Can we do without the windows of soul eyes?
Can we live with feelings and vision?
This question can have thousands of questions full of emotions. A diversity of thoughts for a theme
that raises contradictions. I think no, you think maybe but what does Dickinson think? What does
the blind poet that feels the world from her room thinks? Some critics have used her life to try to
explain her poetry, and others have tried to explain her life by referring to her poems, which they
assume are autobiographical. Emily Dickinson is a passionate poet that expresses herself without
barriers. With a diamond hard language that reflects light to the dark and hope, inspiration till the
last moment.
Emily Dickinson s poetry speaks powerfully to us. It captures her insights and recreates meaningful
events in living; it helps us to understand and even to re live our own experiences through her
intensity and with her emotional and intellectual clarity. In the first stanza Before she got her eye
put out , the speaker liked as well to see / As other creatures, that have eyes / And know no other

Essay Wireless Area Networks
Wireless Area Networks
Wireless technology has become an increasingly crucial part of today s world. From health care
and retail to academia across the world, wireless systems are improving the rate and ease with
which data is sent and received. Two specific examples of the wireless technology used today
personally and professionally are local area networks (LAN) and personal area networks (PAN).
A wireless local area network, or LAN is a flexible data communications system implemented as
an augmentation to, or an alternative for a, wired local area network. These networks rely on
electromagnetic airwaves to transmit and receive over a defined area, usually a few hundred feet.

The key to making this possible is variation of frequencies. As long as concurrent frequencies are
no being broadcasted in a given area, it is possible to have any number of radio transmissions
taking place at a given time. One might ask with countless number of transmissions that could be
occurring at a given time how is it possible to focus on just one stream of data? The answer again
is achieved through radio frequency characteristics. Once data has been encoded into a given radio
carrier, all one has to do to extract the information is have a receiver tuned into one specific
frequency, while rejecting all others. These receiving and transmitting nodes are known as access
points. In typical wireless LAN settings, these access points are in the form of small rectangular
transmitting stations. Receiving access points, or LAN adapters, defined using 802.11EE coding,
are implemented as PC cards in notebooks, palm pilots, and desktops, or as additional access
points that serve to extend the area of the network. These adapters provide an interface between the
network operating system and the radio waves. (Rho Wireless/ Home Networking and Internet
Connection Sharing)
Because wireless technology has its roots in military applications, all wireless systems contain
varying degrees of security for their users. More often then not each individual network with have a

The Late And Post Renaissance
The late and post renaissance was a time dominated by the Medici family, but many other Italian
families had their time in power. As the late renaissance ended and the post renaissance era started,
the Corsini family gained power and influence under the Medici. With banks in England, offices
around Europe, and palazzos in Italy, the family made fast and large steps toward gaining influence
and relevance in Italy. While they earned respect on the financial side, they also progressed on the
religious side, thus earning them nearly the same amount of power and influence as their Medici
counterparts. The Corsini family maintained their status during the Medici rule by developing a
high status on the financial and religious sides of life.

inequality, as such young Australians are more likely to experience inequality (REF). The focus of
this inquiry will be on inequality and unemployment in young Australians. II.Issues High
unemployment (and underemployment) have several costs on Australian society. One of the key
impacts of high unemployment are the heightened levels of inequality (REF). As young Australians
experience higher unemployment (and underemployment) than the average Australian, they also
experience significantly higher levels of inequality (REF). Economy High levels of youth
unemployment (and underemployment), leads to the economy functioning inefficiently
(functioning below the Production Possibility Frontier [PPF]) (REF). Furthermore, a high rate of
unemployment means that young Australians lack the appropriate skills required in the workforce,
thus more time and money is required from the employer to train the young Australians to be able
to participate in the workplace (REF). High levels of youth unemployment result in individuals
possessing lower disposable incomes, consequently there is lower aggregate demand. As demand
for labour is derived demand, the high levels of youth unemployment will result

Le Corbusier s Late Career
Table of Contents
Table of Figures
Introduction
Originally proposed in 1945 as the result of a commission from the Minister of Reconstruction,
Raoul Daputry, Unite d` Habitation is one of the most singular achievements of Le Corbusier`s late
career. With the help of the engineer Francois de Pierrefeu, Le Corbusieraspired to civil
engineering scale in a way that transcends the normative dimensions of a typical medium rise slab
block.
Concept
Unite d`habitation from Marseille was designed to host 16000 people to live in a single slab.
Usually, structures like these are designed horizontally to cover more space, but Le Corbusier did

Structure
The structure of Unite is based on the Five Points of Architecture manifesto: pilotis, a flat roof
garden, ribbon windows, an open plan and free facade.
The building is supported on massive pilotis, 17 pairs of concrete stilts, in order to allow for
circulation, unencumbering the ground not only for pedestrians and cars but also for green
space. With long connection corridors in the center of the structure, socializing and living rooms are
placed away from noise. In the structure, thin exterior walls are enabled by the free facade. Unite
windows were designed to run along the hall, cutting the façade along its entire length and
lighting the room equally.
Rendered in massive, in site reinforced concrete construction, it was elevated on a bridge like
platform that with its battered cantilevered sides was supported by giant, tapering Egyptoid pilotis,
also made of rough boarded concrete. The whole resembles, but at a much more monumental scale,
the monolithic reinforced concrete down stand beams and cantilevered deck carrying the steel
superstructure of the Pavilion Suisse.
Le Corbusier Unite Marseille design represents the starting point of Corbusier s architectural
signature.
A work in which he combined two different modes of fabrication, a reinforced concrete frame cast
in site from timber formwork and a sequence of prefabricated

Reflective Essay On Leadership
I still struggle with feeling like there are enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to
be done. I find that there are still many days that I will work 10 hours, then handle family
commitments, then exercise, then try to spend time with friends, only to find that it s time to go
to bed and I haven t checked everything off my to do list. I have been trying to improve upon
this skill in a few ways including, choosing to be proactive, carefully considering how making a
commitment impacts my overall well being, and using a new calendar so that I can clearly see
what commitments I have already made and how adding a new one would impact my schedule.
Finally, there were two categories that I am currently working on improving which include begin
with the end in mind, and put first thing first. While these weren t m lowest scores, I do feel like
there is a great deal of room for growth within myself here. Now that I have a better understanding
of my leadership strengths and weaknesses, and hope to use this data to grow into an outstanding
leader that inspires others.
When reviewing my survey, I was able to see the areas I excel in and the areas that need
improvement. Based on these results, I think that the leadership that best describes my actions is
situational leadership theory. The situational Leadership theory says that there is no one method
solves all approach to leadership and that the situation will dictate what the correct action should be.

Sub-urbanization in America Essay
Sub urbanization in America AHousing is an outward expression of the inner human nature; no
society can be understood apart from the residences of its members.@ That is a quote from the
suburban historian Kenneth T. Jackson, from his magnificent piece on suburbanization Crabgrass
Frontier. Suburbanization has been probably the most significant factor of change in U.S. cities
over the last 50 years, and began 150 years ago. It represents Aa reliance upon the private
automobile, upward mobility, the separation of the family into nuclear units, the widening division
between work and leisure, and a tendency toward racial and economic exclusiveness.@ Overall it

Such an economic shift is identified as being a result of Awhite flight@, where the urban whites
fled to the suburbs after WWII, with the immigrants, blacks, and rural dwellers moving in. The
economy switched from an industrial economy to a post industrial or service economy, with the
older factories being replaced by smaller factories (computers, airplanes, appliances), requiring
higher skilled workers. In effect these new factories were located outside the city in the suburbs.
The central city would be left with nothing, and virtually no opportunities of any magnitude.
Detroit is a city that I believe can be identified as the city which went through the greatest amount
of change, being heavily relied on one industry. During the first half of the twentieth century,
Detroit was probably the most economically booming city in the United States. Since about
1950, Detroit has gone from Aarsenal of democracy@, having one of the fastest growing
populations and was home to the highest paid working class workers as well, to losing nearly 1
million people. Many jobs were also lost with many business leaving the city of today empty and
sometimes complete city blocks left completely empty. Detroit has also been home to a host of
infrastructure woes, as can be reflected in many other cities in the Industrial Belt of the northeast
with decaying roads, sewers, and other physical features.

Mental and Emotional Development
Write an essay of approx 1,000 words about your understanding of the older child.
Include detail of mental and emotional Development.
Going to school marks a new horizon of a child s life at a time when he/she thinks they are ready
for the greater challenges. Children are curious about the use of letters and words to convey
meaning, and have the manual dexterity to hold a pen or pencil and begin to write.
Together reading and writing broadens the child s experience enabling him/her to learn more about
the world he/she lives in. Their mental ability allows him/her to understand the symbols of letters
and numbers and by manipulating these new experiences develop.

It is important for those caring for children that they are aware of the attitudes of others and offer
opportunities to the child to talk about this.
Praise means a lot to a child of this age as it would to a lot of other people. Efforts should be made
to recognise each child s special attributes.
Summary of Major Developments:
For 5 to 11 year olds: 1. Decreasing dependence on family and developing relationships with other
adults and children. 2. Becoming an active, contributing member of the family. 3. Learning how to
deal with strong feelings appropriately. 4. Learning how to reason and solve problems logically. 5.
Developing understandings of concepts such as number, time and money. 6. Adjusting to changing
body image and coming to terms with sex role identity.
Adolescence Mental and Emotional Development:
Adolescence has been charactised as a time of storm and stress, but many adolescents make the
transition from child to adult with relative ease and with little trauma either to themselves or to
their parents. It is not surprising that, while their bodies are so rapidly changing, youngsters
become quite preoccupied with them and wonder what they will become.
Girls see their first period as a positive achievement towards adulthood or a dreadful event which
signifies the end of childhood.
Boys fear to speak as their voice breaks or they are delighted as their facial hair becomes obviously
present. The attitudes displayed will

Fallacies Examples
According to the text, The Power of Critical Thinking, by Louis Vaughn, a fallacy is defined as,
An argument form that is both common and defective; a recurring mistake in reasoning
(Vaughn, 561). Fallacies can be found in many places whether it is in the media, the workplace,
or around your peers. Some fallacies contain the truth while others at a time can be false or
misleading. It is essential to be able to identify fallacies because they can be used in many ways,
some good some bad. Fallacies are used every day, whether it is to influence someone s opinion to
agree with one side of an argumentrather than the other or to draw in others by appealing to their
emotions or authority. Today, I will be discussing three important fallacies and give examples of
each. These fallacies include Genetic Fallacy, Ad Hominem, and Appeal to Tradition.
As stated by Vaughn, a Genetic Fallacy is the fallacy of arguing that a claim is true or false
solely because of its abstract or nonhuman origins (Vaughn, 561). Instead of looking into what
someone is actually implying is valid, the source gets attacked. It does not matter whether it is an
organization or a single person their reasoning is being invalidated simply because of their origin.
What is being argued is skipped and just one look is taken at the source and they are told they are
wrong. For example, in school, you were taught that five plus five equals ten but at home, you were
taught that five plus five equals twenty five.

Personality Changes From Infancy And Childhood Adulthood
Personality is conceptualised as the combination of a person s independent experiences as well as
their behaviours and actions relating to those behaviours (Kernberg, 2016). These experiences and
actions result in multiple traits and characteristics that modern society uses to define a person s
identity. This essay explores how personality changes from infancy and childhood to adulthood. It
will be argued that personality has the ability to be altered due to range of factors relating to
increasing age and an individual s surrounding environment and experiences. Discussion of a range
of personality theories and examples of radical personality differences will further show that
personalities can be changed through out life.
A well known example of a personality change is known in modern society as a midlife crisis and is
found to occur amongst males aged thirty five to sixty, more commonly referred to as middle
aged. A midlife crisis is often characterised by a sudden and drastic change in behaviour due to
an event or abrupt realisation. The concept of crisis directly relates to the differing nature of one
s personality, which includes a change in morals, relationships, values and principles (Brim,
1976). It is proposed that this change may occur due it being the first time a man has reflected on
his life and achievements and further compares them to the goals he had as a young male (Tamir,
1982). Brim s Theories of the male mid life crisis (1976) concludes that there

What goes into a good statement of strategy? Michael Porter s seminal article What Is Strategy?

question of how to describe a particular п¬Ѓrm s strategy. It is a dirty little secret that most

The Effect Of Anti Microbial Products On Zone Of Inhibition
The Effect of Anti Microbial Products on Zone of Inhibition
Background Information:
Bacteria, singular form bacterium, are microorganisms which belong to their own animal kingdom
Kingdom Monera. All bacteria are alive and require to reproduce and eat. In the experiment, the
bacteria used is called Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause a variety of diseases (e.g.
meningitis, boils and abscesses, osteomyelitis, pneumonia etc.). Various strains of Staphylococcus
aureus are resistant to some antibiotics and has become a health concern. As more and more
antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections/diseases, eventually there will be a point when the
bacterium will grow immune to it. Thus, this makes Staphylococcus aureus serious as it almost
completely immune to benzyl penicillin.
Within the experimented there were three different anti microbial products that were investigated
Bosisto s Eucalyptus Oil 200mL, Bleach and Coles Methylated Spirits.
According to the bottle with the eucalyptus oil, it had claimed that it is 100% pure with
pharmaceutical eucalyptus oil derived from Eucalyptus polybractera (Blue Mallee). This product
can be applied on minor wounds, cold and flu symptoms, aches and pains, stains, clothing as well
as cleaning but has no claims about what percentage of bacteria it kills but online sources claim it as
one of the most effective methods of curing Staphylococcus aureus.
The bleach used in the practical had no claims but according to online

Descriptions And Differences Of The Alpine And Desert...
The world has many ecosystems which has some similarities and some differences to each other. In
my essay I am going to contrast and compare the Alpine and Desert Ecosystems describing climates,
soils, plant adaptations and interactions between plants and animals.
First I would like to give an overview of each ecosystem and then compare their attributes.
Alpine Ecosystems can be found all around the world on great mountain ranges at an altitude of
10000 feet or more just below the snow line of the mountains for example in the Andes, Alps or
Rocky Mountains. Around 16% percent of the Earth s surface is part of this ecosystem.
The climate here is generally very cold which leads to the ground being mostly frozen. Due to this

They also want to preserve the water they gained so they are mostly slower growing which takes
less energy therefore less food which means they do not use as much water.
They also developed a range of methods to scare animals away, but on the other hand they need
pollinators who in these areas are more active in the night so their flowers open at this time.
The main similarity between the plant adaptations in these ecosystems is that they grow small
because of the lack of nutrients in the soil, the wind and the extreme weather.
They also develop hairy leaves but for different reasons. In the Alpine Ecosystem they are doing it
to help them keep the warmth they gained during the day and also to break the wind and provide a
fairly warmer temperature around the plant. However in the Desert Ecosystem they do it to reduce
water loss.
Another similarity is that their leaves or flowers are turning during the day. But again it has
different causes. While in Alpine regions they want to absorb more sun this was, in Desert regions
they want to avoid losing water.
They have similarities in growing spine or needles instead of leaves because these are more
efficient in absorbing sunlight which is crucial for

Analysis Of Editha By William Dean Howells And The Yellow...
Realism is the art of exposing the hardcore truth in a form of literature while keeping it creative
in its fashion. Realism, in itself is a type of literature I am the fondest of because although the
truth hurts sometimes, it will always be better than a sweet lie. Most of the literary realism I have
experienced has worked hand in hand with romantics as it exposes the truth behind marriages in
the 18th and 19th centuries. Two stories I have read that stood out the most to me on the grounds
of literary realism are: Editha by William Dean Howellsand The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte
Perkins Gilman.

comes down to literary realism. This comes into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marriage was a major key as well because it showed how marriage was set up and how women
were domesticated and voices were silent. That was a real eye opener because woman didn t have
any rights and was basically to stay silent and do what they are told by their spouse.
In essence, literary realism is put in place to give its readers a real place of how life was or how
something occurs in the pass. The two stories that gave me a good depiction of what realism is
are: Editha by William Dean Howells, and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The
two stories put things in perspective when it comes to life in the nineteenth century and the
problems that came along with it. Which are so unfortunate in some cases but it gives us the
readers the raw truth.
There is a thing that occurs in stories that give you a since of humor while still giving you an
ultimate message. Mark Twain has become the connoisseur of this term and uses it in a very
unique way to show his readers that there can always be humor in your writing even when you
think it s impossible. The term is satire which in my own words mean putting humor and
information in way that makes you think. I have found this prominent in two of Mark Twain s
books: The Good Little Boy, and The Bad Little Boy. These stories give its readers satire

Depression And Personality Disorder Essay
We all know that depression is classified as a very serious mood swing disorder. There are some
people who have major depression and it can effect their daily life. Depression can make a
person feel down or feel lost because of everyday stress. The American Psychiatric Association
considers depression abnormal only when it is out of proportion to the event and continues past
the point at which most people begin to recover (Atkinson et al., 1996, p. 524). There is bipolar

The Importance Of Multiplicative Thinking
Multiplicative thinking, fractions and decimals are important aspects of mathematics required for a
deep conceptual understanding. The following portfolio will discuss the key ideas of each and the
strategies to enable positive teaching. It will highlight certain difficulties and misconceptions that
children face and discuss resources and activities to help alleviate these. It will also acknowledge
the connections between the areas of mathematics and discuss the need for succinct teaching
instead of an isolated approach. Multiplicative Thinking Multiplicative thinking is imperative to a
child s understanding of important mathematical concepts and is seen as the big idea in number
that links multiple key ideas and strategies (Vergnaud, as cited in Siemon, 2011). Commonly,
children have a procedural based view of multiplicative thinking which can hinder progress, as
opposed to a more conceptual view which is a far better learning framework (Hurst Hurrell, 2016).
If teachers are to maximise a child s learning, they must acknowledge this and help children
maintain a conceptual understanding of multiplicative thinking and emphasise this much more so
than procedural rules. Several key ideas and strategies underpin the success of multiplicative
thinking and a greater conceptual understanding. Hurst and Hurrell (2014) explain that children
need to be acutely aware of the ten times multiplicative relationship between places and how this
effects many aspects of mathematics.

The Role Of Settler Colonization And Its Negative...
In April 1995 Pamela George, an Ojibway women, was brutally murdered in Saskatchewan. Her
murderers Steven Kummerfield and Alex Ternowetsky, young middle class white men, were
convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to merely six and a half years in prison. George s
story is one of the many Indigenous women who have been murdered or missing over the past
years. There are over 580 cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women, close to half are put
aside and left unsolved. Only 53% of these cases have lead to charges of homicide (Klement 8).
Drastically, statistics indicate that Aboriginals are faced with more hardships throughout their life
compared to the average Canadian. Indigenous groups, particularly women, suffer from a lower
rate of education, higher suicide rates and an array of health risks. This paper will examine the role
settler colonization history has played in perpetuating conditions for violenceto indigenous women,
many of which are still experienced today. This will be accomplished by first assessing the history
of settler colonization and its negative repercussions. Secondly, it will use Sherene Razak s concept
of spatial segregation, to illustrate how state institutions have facilitated violence through space,
race and the law. Lastly, this paper will use evidence from the film Finding Dawn to further
demonstrate how violence towards indigenous women is institutionally produced.

THE INFLUENCE OF PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION ON AMERICAN SCHOOLING
The Progressive Era was from 1890 1919 when President Theodore Roosevelt became predecessor
to President William McKinley whom was assassinated. For decades, it has been a controversial
debate on how influential Progressive Education is on American Schooling. The Progressive
Movement started because of the development of big businesses and corporations as education
became a major topic for reformers due to child labor laws and public schooling became the
central focus in the United States. Efforts of this movement were to regulate big businesses,
governmental reform, women s suffrage, and temperance. (Hayes 2006, p. 7) I am a follower in

According to Alfie Kohn s article and his views on Progressive Education, he saw it as attending to
the whole child, since educators were concerned with helping children become good learners and
good people...he felt that children learn with and from one another in a caring community, and that
s true of moral as well as academic learning...where opportunities are offered not only to learn about,
but also to put into action...in schools where students play a vital role in helping to design the
curriculum, formulate the questions, seek out answers, think through possibilities, and evaluate
how successful they and their teachers have been. (2008, pgs. 18 19)

Life Is So Good By George Dawson And Richard Glaubman

to the philosophy of African Americans at this time. Starting out at the earliest memory of
George Dawson s life, this book travels with George on his incredible story of his life. George s
mindset was instilled at an early age through his grandmother, President Lincoln, he didn t free

SMART Port Security
The SMART Port Security is a legislation that created new layers of security in U.S. ports in a cost
effective manner. The legislation emphasizes the need of creating strong partnership among federal,
state, and local governments as well as with private and international organizations (Homeland
security committee, 2012). The goal is to ensure that securityefforts at all levels are effectively
coordinated and integrated so that there can be more layers of security without having to invest
additional resources. This is accomplished by identifying redundancies or repetitive security
measures that are useless, which will allow port authorities to convert them into more useful
security layers (Homeland security committee, 2012). Moreover, the legislation also encourages the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to speed up the process of installing biometric readers to

Older people are said to be a vulnerable group in society and it is notable that those with
dementia are at a significant increase torisk of abuse, (see Manthorpe, et al 2005). The author of

Dementia is a term used for a variety of symptoms caused when brain cells stop working correctly
with a cognitive functioning decline, (Alzheimer s disease International, 2012). Some types of
dementia include; Alzheimer s disease, Vascular dementia, frontal temporal dementia and Parkinson
s disease and Lewy body dementia, (Alzheimer s research, UK; Banerjee et al, 2007; Weiner
Lipton 2009). One in three people who die after the age of 65 are found to have dementia, and of
those, two in three are female, (Department of Health, DoH, 2015). Some of the symptoms
associated with dementia include, increased difficulties in communication, action and response,
changes in awareness, attention and judgment, and visual spatial difficulties, (Alzheimer s
research, UK, 2017). Data collection states that dementia is expected to increase to 131.5
million worldwide by 2050 from the current 46.8 million, (Alzheimer s Disease International,
2015). Furthermore, the DoH, (2015), report that in the UK there are currently 850,000 over the
age of 65 and a further 45,000 under the age of 65 living with dementia, and 69% of all people
living in care homes have dementia. Elder abuse is defined as a single, or repeated act, or lack of

Research Paper On Anne Sexton
Anne sexton (November 9, 1928 October 4, 1974) was an American poet who found love in
poetry and was known for her highly personal confessional verse. She was born as Anne Gray
Harvey to her mother and father Mary Gray Staples and Ralph Churchill Harvey. Anne sexton
wrote about her long battles against depression, mania, and her suicidal thoughts, she looked to
help people fight personal problems and ease their pain. Sexton suffered from severe mental
illness for much of her life, her first manic episode taking place in 1954. After a second episode in
1955 she met Dr. Martin Orne, who became her long term therapist at the Glenside Hospital. It was
Dr. Orne who encouraged her to take up poetry. Sextons poetic career was encouraged by a mentor

emotional side. After the sudden death of her parents, she was emotionally broke. Her married

Sexton published her second poetry book, All My Pretty Ones . The book became immensely
popular and following its success, she started working on four children s books with her
longtime friend Maxine Cumin. In the time period between, August 22 to October 27, 1963,

Explain the Constructivist Theory of Guidance
2 28 2012 Explaining Guidance Theories: Developmental, Behavioral, Constructivist. Question:
Explain Constructivist theory of guidance.
____________________________________________________________________________
Constructivism is rooted from philosophy just like sociology, ethnography and cognitive
psychology. Already in the eighteenth century, the German philosopher Kant believed that a child s
learning was an interaction between the developing child and the environment. He believed that
children constructed their own knowledge and understanding about things. This is a constructivist
view of how children learn (Bruce, Meggitt Grenier 2010). The child centered constructivist
approach to early childhood education has its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Taking a Look at Local Produce
My topic is local produce. I chose this topic because I am really interested in the different types of
food people consume and how it affects their health.
The big question I will be answering is whether or not to buy local or non local foods. I will go
over which is safer for the economy, the environment, and people. After I research this, I will then
find which one is better to buy. This is a question that each person should ponder before deciding
which type of food to buy. My hypothesis is that eating locally will be better and safer for everyone.
Do you often find that the foods in your fridge are nonlocal?
There are many negative things to contemplate when deciding what type of foods to buy. Issues
upon this topic include foodborne illnesses, also known as food poisoning, incorrect processing
and handling and preparation of meats, and bacteria. Many multi state waves in which have
infected many hundreds of people have lately been traced back to specific farms, food processors,
and specific food handlers. (As stated by sustainabletable.org)
Some major issues with buying non local foods that have an effect of the earth are pesticides and
steroids. They can be put into these foods and can seriously harm the consumer.
Pesticides are made to kill pests to the plant, but they often hurt humans instead. By buying local
food, your chances of eating foods that contain pesticides become less likely. When foods are
grown locally, they are generally in season because they do not

Modernist Poets E.E. Cummings, Wallace Stevens, and T.S. Eliot Change the Face of American
Poetry
Modernist poets such as E.E. Cummings, Wallace Stevens, and T.S. Eliot changed the face of
American poetry by destroying the notion that American culture is far inferior to European culture.
These and other American poets accomplished the feat of defining an American poetic style in the
Modern Era by means of a truly American idea. That idea is the melting pot. Just as American
culture exists as a mixture of races, beliefs, and ideas, the new American style of poetry exists as a
mixture of old English styles with a new concept of the international style. Modern poets
experiment with language, theme, and convention to cleanse language ... Show more content on

Pound was showing influence from the fourteenth century Italian poets such as Guido Cavalcanti.
In their works that follow their time in Europe, both Eliot and Pound display a hybridization of
English and French and Italian ideas. Cummings began to imitate French Modernist poets
Guillaume Apollinaire and Stephane MallarmГ©. He also adopted an aesthetic based on the
manifestos of French Surrealists and Dadaists, who detached literature from referential meaning
and linked it to experimental play (McQuade 1235). Such experimental play is seen in Cummings
poem [she being brand] in which the creatively formed words and syntax give the image of a
young man s thoughts, feelings, and actions upon driving his new car: again slo wly; bare,ly nudg.
ing (Cummings 15). The use of punctuation gives a vivid image of his thoughts as he carefully puts
the stiff transmission into gear. Into another Cummings poem, [in Just ], we see more experimental
play with the words to create the impression of the way excited children talk: and eddieandbill
come running from marbles and piracies and its spring (Cummings 6).
Wallace Stevens was influenced by French poetry and art. Stevens often intertwined French and
English in sentences, as in the line from The Plain Sense of Things : We had come to an end of the
imagination / Inanimate in an inert savoir (Stevens 4 5). Stevens style seemed to imitate the French

Literature Review On Gay Labour Migration
A literature review of seeking security:
Gay labour migration and uneven landscapes of work
Michele Lynn Barnett
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University
09/21/2017
Introduction Research conducted by Stonewall, a gay advocacy group in London, shows that
people are coming out, or publicly sharing their inclusion in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender (LGBT) community, at continually younger ages (Williams, 2010). While this is
heartening news, many persons who are just coming out of the closet are well into adulthood.
For those who are adjusting to being able to live truthfully and openly with who they really are,
there are some real implications in their lives, mental health, families, careers, and even living
situations (Human, 2017, para. 2). While most of these adjustments can be seen as positive
changes, some of the changes may also necessitate secondary changes, such as moving (or
migrating) into sectors and workplaces where they perceive their sexuality to be more accepted,
and to locales where they expect to be better protected (Lewis Mills, 2016, p. 2498).
Migration
Authors Nathaniel M. Lewis and Suzanne Mills present research on gay labor migration, stating
that the norms governing gender and sexuality within various workplaces, economic sectors and
locales continuously influence migration related to work.... [and] the affective needs of [queer]
workers both deflect them from and attract them to particular locales and workplaces (2016,

What Does Habit 2 Mean
Stephen R. Covey defines the phrase in Habit 2: begin with the end in mind as beginning each day,
task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continues by
activating your proactive influences to make these things happen. He defines the phrase in Habit 3
put first things first as organizing and managing timeand events according to the personal priorities
established in Habit 2. In the paper I will explain how these two habits effect will help me perform
in my internship, my personal and professional efforts, and my future career values.
INTERNSHIP PERFORMANCE
Habit 2
Having the ability to plan ahead or begin with the end in mind will play a great part in my
internship experience. I can make a series of correct short term decisions in order to achieve the
long term goal. For example, if my supervisor gives me a task with a deadline, this will be the
long term goal. Keeping this in mind, I will be able to apply the necessary actions (a series short
term decisions.) After reading this habit, I have learned that I can create a plan to increase my
success. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It will help deal with many questions concerning time management, which is a key issue if you
want to be successful in the future. Using the process stated in Covey s text, developing each
stage from habit 1 through 3, I will be able to set a logical path both mental and physical that will
assist in my everyday activities towards achieving the goals I set for myself. Being a proactive
person that thinks in terms of I will do rather than simply I can do. Maintaining a positive can do
attitude helps me with my decision making during life in and out of work. This culmination of
habits as described by Covey will be useful in shaping my career and how I approach each day. By
combining a proactive attitude with a plan for success and a prioritization mentality I will continue

Myth Of The Jezebel Myth
During the early 1500s and throughout the early 1900s, slavery was committed by white men,
against African Americans in order to maintain white supremacy. Slavery consisted of farming,
working hard labor, and turning African Americans into servant by their white owners. Enslaved
African Americans would not receive any form of money for hard labor because black men and
women were thought of as property. Black enslaved and freed men and women were also raped by
both white men and women, because white peoplebelieved that black peoplewere hypersexual.
Many white men believed that it was impossible to rape a black woman because the belief was
that black women were inherently rapeable (Block 141).
One of the myths that reflected the belief that black women were inherently rapeable was the
Jezebel myth. When white men first visited Africa, they noticed that black women wore little to
no clothes because of the hot African heat, therefore created the believe that all black women
were sexually submissive (29). Deborah White states that white men believed that... [black
women] invited sexual overtures from white men, and that any resistance they displayed was
mere feigning. (30). This is how the Jezebel myth came into play. Jezebel was characterized as
the opposite of the mid nineteenth Victorian lady and were defined as sexual beings (29). By
creating a believe that black enslaved women wanted to be raped by white men not only created a
sense of power to white men but it was

Cardiovascular System Essays
The cardiovascular system, which consists of the heart and blood vessels, is the circulatory
systems in our body. The major function of the system is transportation; the heart is the system
pump and the blood vessels are the delivery routes. The heart transport respiratory gases, nutrients,
wastes, and other substances vital to the body s homeostasis to and from the cells by using the
blood as a medium.
The heart is a cone shaped organ approximately the size of a fist with an apex and a base. It is
located within the mediastinum or medial cavity of the thorax. The heart is enclosed within a
double walled pericardium, a fibroserous sac. The pericardium has a superficial fibrous

Left ventricle pumps the blood into the aorta, where the blood is supplied to the body tissues by the

Heart valves ensure one way blood flow through heart. The atrioventricular (AV) valves lie

mitral or bicuspid valve consists of two cusps of endocardium. The right atrioventricular valve, the
tricuspid valve, has three cusps. The second sets of valve are the semilunar valves. The pulmonary

The hearts function as a double pump that serves two circulations. The pulmonary pump in the
right side of heart is provided for the gas exchange in the body, and the systemic circulation in the
left side provides the functional blood supply to all body tissues. The functional blood to the heart
is provided by the coronary arteries. Right coronary artery supplies the heart through the posterior
interventricular and marginal artery branches; and the left coronary artery supplies the heart via
anterior interventricular artery and the circumflex artery. The myocardium is drained by great,

Good and bad a requirement in all superhero stories, without either one of them the story just
remains incomplete. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons two well known writers in the graphic story

graphic novel, Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, the central theme portrayed
throughout the graphic novelis the good versus bad. Throughout history, us humans have tried to
obtain powers over others, for example, the World Wars, British rule in India, Rwanda Genocide;

This confusion of being good is show in the characters of Rorschach, Nite Owl, and Silk Spectre
II. The character of Rorschach had a very dark childhood as he rejected is by his mother causing
him to always be against women. He s very closed minded this is seen when Dr. Manhattan
agrees with Ozymandias s plan to bring the world together. (Moore 405 406). Rorschach becomes
a psychopath when it comes to dealing with criminals; he always wants to get rid of the bad.
Rorschach punishes those who he thinks are evil with no remorse and according to him he is the
real definition of heroism. In Rorschach s journal, we see the inner thoughts of his character and
psyche... Rorschach s journal entries and the crumbing morale of the surrounding city offer the
reader a harsh and frank critique. (Cummings 21). That showed that the point of his journal was just
to provide the reader with harsh truths. Rorschach believes that humans have no value and the only
point of life is to make sure that there is justice. In

The Canadian Government And The Aboriginal People
In the 19th century, The Canadian government believed that it was their job to educate the
Aboriginal people in Canada. European settlers felt that the aboriginal people were savage,
ignorant, and like children needed guidance, and needed to be civilized . Ultimately, they
wanted to assimilate the Aboriginal people into Canadian and Christian ways of living life in
Canada. The Canadian government came up with a policy called aggressive assimilation to be
taught at industrial schools that would be run by the churches and government funded. They
chose children to go to these schools because they are easier to manipulate and mold than the
adults and felt that school was the best way to do so. With the hopes of the assimilated children
will teach their children their new way of life and that their traditions and culture will diminish or
be completely gone in a few generations. In the 1880 s, the government began to construct the
residential schools across Canada. Authorities often would take kids from their home, to isolate
them from their family and familiar communities. In 1920 is when the Indian Act came in effect
where every Aboriginal child was obligated to attend a residential school and it was illegal for
them to go to any other institution. Moving on to oppression which Aboriginal children faced
much of. Oppression is defined as the social act of placing severe restrictions on an individual,
group, or institution. The ultimate goal of oppression is to keep the people

not have the best relationoshipwith the officers he supervises; however, he does have a great deal
of support from the community (Dallas News, 2016). Community oriented policing deals with the
ore issue for police and the chief that leads them; building a working, trusting relationship with your
community. Without this trust, crime reduction is not possible, thus, it is imperative that law
enforcement invest time in their communities to build relationships and gain the trust of their
communities. Additionally, a positive relationship is necessary to collect valuable intelligence and
sustain policing efforts. Even with successful sweeps and arrests, empowered citizens and
community leaders are essential to maintain support during difficult times.

In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the satellite Sputnik, and the space race was on. The Soviet s
triumph jarred the American people and sparked a vigorous response in the federal government to
make sure the United States did not fall behind its communist rival.
A new space program, Project Mercury, was initiated two years later, during President Dwight D.
Eisenhower s administration. Seven men were selected to take part in the program: Scott
Carpenter, Leroy Gordon Cooper, John Glenn Jr., Virgil Grissom, Walter Schirra Jr., Alan Shepard
Jr., and Donald Slayton. Project Mercury s goals were to orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth,

Viking 1 was launched on August 2o, 1975, and the second craft, Viking 2, was launched on

After orbiting Mars for more than a month and returning images used for landing site selection, the

Persuasive Essay On The LGBT Community
The LGBT community is often referred to as the gay community, which includes lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgendered people. This community has not always been supported by others.
There has been many challenges and attempts to get equality dating back to 1969 with the
stonewalls riots, which were violent riots against a police raid by the gaycommunity. This is just
one of the many protest and riots that will take place with their fight against discrimination and
inequality. Gilbert Baker was a rights activist, in 1978 he stitched the rainbow flag that has now
become the international symbol of gay pride. In the 1980 s the AIDS epidemic brought more
challenges, which people who did not support the LGBTcommunity only used to further block
legal protection. It would be years before they even got the right to same sex marriage. In 2004
Massachusetts became the first state in the United States granting gays to legally marry, but it
would not become legal in all 50 states until June 26, 2015. Even though people are now allowed
the right to same sex marriage, there are still many struggles and injustices that they still face today.
Members of the LGBT community should be treated equal and provided with constitutional rights,
access to the military, and legal protection regardless of sexual orientationor gender identity. Every
U.S citizen has Constitutional Rights, yet LGBTs are constantly getting their rights violated.
Although the Fourteenth Amendment, ratified at the

The new regulation provided for the implementation of a new kind of substantive test as well as certain procedural changes. More explicitly, the importance given to efficiencies as a defence to otherwise problematic mergers, the creation of the office of the chief economist, the guidelines regarding horizontal mergers, and more importantly the introduction of the new significant impediment of effective competition test (SIEC) are the main indicators of the shift in merger policy. The introduction of the new substantive test based on the concept of significant impediment of effective competition is the most important aspect of the competition policy revision. The wording of the Regulation 4064/89 implied that the merger review process involved a two stage test. The second element of the test, the impediment of effective competition, was rarely applied in practice because it was presumed to result only from the creation or strengthening of a dominant position. That was the main criticism regarding the old dominance test, because in effect, the dominance test allowed mergers resulting in lessening of competition without the creation of a dominant position to go un challenged. Under the new rule, dominance is only an example for a significant impediment of effective competition, and thus proof of dominance is no longer a necessary condition in order for the Commission to challenge a merger. This dissertation focuses on the most significant developments introduced by Reg.139/2004. More particularly it will concentrate on the revised substantive test ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Purpose of the Biblical Flood narrative The Old Testament can be described as an anthology of the literature of ancient Israel and early Judaism (Coogen 2008) that contains many forms of writings and stories which address not only myth, main historical events and laws, but also those that follow the Israelites unique relationship with God. The first book of the Old Testament is known as Genesis, which is highly concerned with the world s creation and its initial stages. It is also the origin of the biblical Flood Narrative concerning Noah and the Ark. Ea, a god that is unhappy with the idea of flooding the world, secretly instructs Utnapishtim to build a boat and to take with him animals in order to survive the impending flood. Tear down the house and build a boat! Abandon wealth and seek living beings! Spurn all possessions and keep alive living beings! Make all living things go up in the boat! The boat which you are to build, its dimensions must be equal to each other: (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). Similarly God says to Noah; I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth. Make yourself and ark of cypress wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you are to make it: (Gen 6:13 15, NRSV). Later in the chapter God reveals to Noah; For my part I am going to bring a flood of water to the earth (Gen 6:17, NRSV) and instructs Noah to bring into the ark of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you: (Gen 6:19, NRSV). Another example of the parallels within each story is the description of everything being submerged by water. In the Epic of Gilgamesh it reads The sea calmed, fell still, the whirlwind (and) flood stopped up. I looked around all day long quiet had set in and all the human beings had turned to clay! The terrain was as flat as a roof. (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Risk Reduction by Diversification of Porfolio Over a long time horizon researchers have contradictory views about investment in portfolio, are Put all your eggs in one basket and Don t put all your eggs in one basket . The latter one is supported by many and known as diversification [7]. Diversification is associated with reducing risk and maximizing returns of investors and portfoliomanagers i.e. risk return trade off. An investor gets benefitted by spreading his scarce resources over various assets [2, 8] which maximizes return and minimizes risk. Diversification is needed to minimize volatility i.e. measure of risk and maximize return. After the global financial crisis in US and Eurozone crisis, market is continuously enduring high volatility. Increased market volatility imposed much risk to investments which can be minimized by using diversification effects of other types of financial portfolio securities [9]. The phenomenon to be considered can be correlation between two securities. The pioneer and elegant model given by H. Markowitz [2] and J. Tobin [3], analyzed in his research that risk reduction by diversification of portfolio closely depends upon correlation of mean returns of individual securities of portfolio. H. Markowitz also analyzed about portfolio diversification that if there is low correlation between two securities then there are more portfolio risk diversification benefits. While correlation between securities shows direct relation with portfolio diversification benefits but the argument ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Medicine has improved, average standard of living has risen, and the overall quality of life has changed drastically over the course of time. Yet, these are all short term ideals when taken into the whole picture. Although all of this is important, to truly understand the actual face of America, we have to think farther back than a few hundred years. The face of America can best be portrayed in thinking about how America looks the way it does. Questions like How did the Rocky mountains form? or Why are the Great Plains located where they are? This is one, but not the only way to make the phenomenon we know as earthquakes. This fault has not only caused trouble in the past but is likely to bring devastating destruction in the relatively near future. San Francisco had an earthquake, because of this fault, in April 1906 killing over 700 people and causing millions in damage (San). If a new earthquake were to happen it would kill thousands of American citizens along the west coast. Consequently, there would be a major drop in population over there which could reduce the amount of production created in this region all tying back into why the geological aspect of America is a main determining factor for seeing the importance of why America has the properties it has and will have in the future. Another well known geological phenomenon in the United States is Yellowstone Park. Yellowstone is an extraordinary example of a caldera which is defined as a volcanic crater that has a diameter many times that of the vent and is formed by collapse of the central part of a volcano or by explosions of extraordinary violence (USGS). Since Yellowstone is a caldera, it means that there had been previous volcanic eruptions in this area and in this case two eruptions. The first explosion happened over 2,000,000 years ago because the composition of the magma contained vast traces of explosive matter that caused the eruption (USGS). • 9. Button Button Analysis In, Button, Button, the author, Richard Matheson introduces Norma and Arthur Lewis. The button causes temptations that lead to conflicts between the two characters. In the narrative, Mr. Steward arrives at the house and tells them about the button. If one of them pushes the button, someone will die, and they will receive a grand total of $50,000. This causes a dramatic conflictbetween the two. It brings the worst out of the two of them, causing jealousy, selfishness, and acquisitiveness. Norma has to make a decision whether to press the button or not. She contemplates and then eventually to press the button. Matheson uses dialogue, inner thinking, description, and symbolism to develop the central conflicts in the story and to accentuate how relationships break off even in the best circumstances. Richard Mathesonuses dialogue to develop conflict in the story. The use of dialogue is utilized to represent situational irony. In Button, Button the text states: You said I wouldn t know the one that died. My dear lady... Do you really think you knew your husband? (Matheson 111). Additionally, this conversation indicates the situational irony revealed by between the two characters: Norma and Mr. Steward. Mrs. Lewis didn t believe her husband would be the one that dies. She didn t realize that she was so self absorbed and never truly knew her husband. This conversation between two characters leaves the readers on a cliffhanger. In retrospect, these treatment facilities will actually cost less to care for the patients than they would if they were initially placed in a jail or prison cell. L Freeman Analysis In a parallel universe where the consequences for not being a Christian in America is much more apparent than our own: Religion, for thousands of years, has dulled man kind s senses to see the lovely light of logic. Yet the question remains, and a grand question it is: in America, which subjects and/or events should the influence of religioncease its reign? The opaque answer, still wet with Heraclitus like metaphysics, had never been so clear as J.L. Freeman stood before a jury and said thus unto it: and if this be the case, then all Seraphs be damned to Hell! Yet, to be clear, this story does in fact have an origin, hidden, of course, by the primitive man with his puzzling, primitive philosophy! Sometimes looking, staring but again not watching something. Sometimes imaging big dreams, big things distracted in soul visions but never finding anything in reality. Surrounded by same objects, life, people, big roads, big decisions, choices. We, the people we are unique, we are a mosaic with rare, colorful pieces. The way we live the life, enjoy the world, see the things makes us who we are. In dark or light, confident or not, walking or halting. Under the sun s beam, warm and relieved; under the cold moon and shining stars that fill the black, mysterious, endless sky, thinking in sadness. Often in reality; rarely in our mind. Every time contemplating the miracles of the nature. Enjoying the infinite universe with just two finite eyes just enough. Every creature that can see has a power. And all creatures have another one called the art of seeing vision. Can we do without the windows of soul eyes? Can we live with feelings and vision? This question can have thousands of questions full of emotions. A diversity of thoughts for a theme that raises contradictions. I think no, you think maybe but what does Dickinson think? What does the blind poet that feels the world from her room thinks? Some critics have used her life to try to explain her poetry, and others have tried to explain her life by referring to her poems, which they assume are autobiographical. Emily Dickinson is a passionate poet that expresses herself without barriers. With a diamond hard language that reflects light to the dark and hope, inspiration till the last moment. Emily Dickinson s poetry speaks powerfully to us. It captures her insights and recreates meaningful events in living; it helps us to understand and even to re live our own experiences through her intensity and with her emotional and intellectual clarity. The answer again is achieved through radio frequency characteristics. Once data has been encoded into a given radio carrier, all one has to do to extract the information is have a receiver tuned into one specific frequency, while rejecting all others. These receiving and transmitting nodes are known as access points. In typical wireless LAN settings, these access points are in the form of small rectangular transmitting stations. Fallacies Examples According to the text, The Power of Critical Thinking, by Louis Vaughn, a fallacy is defined as, An argument form that is both common and defective; a recurring mistake in reasoning (Vaughn, 561). Fallacies can be found in many places whether it is in the media, the workplace, or around your peers. Some fallacies contain the truth while others at a time can be false or misleading. It is essential to be able to identify fallacies because they can be used in many ways, some good some bad. Fallacies are used every day, whether it is to influence someone s opinion to agree with one side of an argumentrather than the other or to draw in others by appealing to their emotions or authority. Today, I will be discussing three important fallacies and give examples of each. These fallacies include Genetic Fallacy, Ad Hominem, and Appeal to Tradition. As stated by Vaughn, a Genetic Fallacy is the fallacy of arguing that a claim is true or false solely because of its abstract or nonhuman origins (Vaughn, 561). Instead of looking into what someone is actually implying is valid, the source gets attacked. It does not matter whether it is an organization or a single person their reasoning is being invalidated simply because of their origin. What is being argued is skipped and just one look is taken at the source and they are told they are wrong. For example, in school, you were taught that five plus five equals ten but at home, you were taught that five plus five equals twenty five. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Personality Changes From Infancy And Childhood Adulthood Personality is conceptualised as the combination of a person s independent experiences as well as their behaviours and actions relating to those behaviours (Kernberg, 2016). These experiences and actions result in multiple traits and characteristics that modern society uses to define a person s identity. This essay explores how personality changes from infancy and childhood to adulthood. It will be argued that personality has the ability to be altered due to range of factors relating to increasing age and an individual s surrounding environment and experiences. Discussion of a range of personality theories and examples of radical personality differences will further show that personalities can be changed through out life. A well known example of a personality change is known in modern society as a midlife crisis and is found to occur amongst males aged thirty five to sixty, more commonly referred to as middle aged. A midlife crisis is often characterised by a sudden and drastic change in behaviour due to an event or abrupt realisation. The concept of crisis directly relates to the differing nature of one s personality, which includes a change in morals, relationships, values and principles (Brim, 1976). It is proposed that this change may occur due it being the first time a man has reflected on his life and achievements and further compares them to the goals he had as a young male (Tamir, 1982). • 30. The Effect Of Anti Microbial Products On Zone Of Inhibition The Effect of Anti Microbial Products on Zone of Inhibition Background Information: Bacteria, singular form bacterium, are microorganisms which belong to their own animal kingdom Kingdom Monera. All bacteria are alive and require to reproduce and eat. In the experiment, the bacteria used is called Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause a variety of diseases (e.g. meningitis, boils and abscesses, osteomyelitis, pneumonia etc.). Various strains of Staphylococcus aureus are resistant to some antibiotics and has become a health concern. As more and more antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections/diseases, eventually there will be a point when the bacterium will grow immune to it. Thus, this makes Staphylococcus aureus serious as it almost completely immune to benzyl penicillin. Within the experimented there were three different anti microbial products that were investigated Bosisto s Eucalyptus Oil 200mL, Bleach and Coles Methylated Spirits. According to the bottle with the eucalyptus oil, it had claimed that it is 100% pure with pharmaceutical eucalyptus oil derived from Eucalyptus polybractera (Blue Mallee). This product can be applied on minor wounds, cold and flu symptoms, aches and pains, stains, clothing as well as cleaning but has no claims about what percentage of bacteria it kills but online sources claim it as one of the most effective methods of curing Staphylococcus aureus. In my essay I am going to contrast and compare the Alpine and Desert Ecosystems describing climates, soils, plant adaptations and interactions between plants and animals. First I would like to give an overview of each ecosystem and then compare their attributes. Alpine Ecosystems can be found all around the world on great mountain ranges at an altitude of 10000 feet or more just below the snow line of the mountains for example in the Andes, Alps or Rocky Mountains. Around 16% percent of the Earth s surface is part of this ecosystem. The climate here is generally very cold which leads to the ground being mostly frozen. Due to this dead plants cannot ... The main similarity between the plant adaptations in these ecosystems is that they grow small because of the lack of nutrients in the soil, the wind and the extreme weather. They also develop hairy leaves but for different reasons. In the Alpine Ecosystem they are doing it to help them keep the warmth they gained during the day and also to break the wind and provide a fairly warmer temperature around the plant. However in the Desert Ecosystem they do it to reduce water loss. Another similarity is that their leaves or flowers are turning during the day. But again it has different causes. While in Alpine regions they want to absorb more sun this was, in Desert regions they want to avoid losing water. • 32. Analysis Of Editha By William Dean Howells And The Yellow... Realism is the art of exposing the hardcore truth in a form of literature while keeping it creative in its fashion. Realism, in itself is a type of literature I am the fondest of because although the truth hurts sometimes, it will always be better than a sweet lie. Most of the literary realism I have experienced has worked hand in hand with romantics as it exposes the truth behind marriages in the 18th and 19th centuries. Two stories I have read that stood out the most to me on the grounds of literary realism are: Editha by William Dean Howellsand The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Marriage was a major key as well because it showed how marriage was set up and how women were domesticated and voices were silent. In essence, literary realism is put in place to give its readers a real place of how life was or how something occurs in the pass. The two stories that gave me a good depiction of what realism is are: Editha by William Dean Howells, and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The two stories put things in perspective when it comes to life in the nineteenth century and the problems that came along with it. It will highlight certain difficulties and misconceptions that children face and discuss resources and activities to help alleviate these. It will also acknowledge the connections between the areas of mathematics and discuss the need for succinct teaching instead of an isolated approach. Multiplicative Thinking Multiplicative thinking is imperative to a child s understanding of important mathematical concepts and is seen as the big idea in number that links multiple key ideas and strategies (Vergnaud, as cited in Siemon, 2011). Commonly, children have a procedural based view of multiplicative thinking which can hinder progress, as opposed to a more conceptual view which is a far better learning framework (Hurst Hurrell, 2016). If teachers are to maximise a child s learning, they must acknowledge this and help children maintain a conceptual understanding of multiplicative thinking and emphasise this much more so than procedural rules. Several key ideas and strategies underpin the success of multiplicative thinking and a greater conceptual understanding. Hurst and Hurrell (2014) explain that children need to be acutely aware of the ten times multiplicative relationship between places and how this effects many aspects of mathematics. ... He also adopted an aesthetic based on the manifestos of French Surrealists and Dadaists, who detached literature from referential meaning and linked it to experimental play (McQuade 1235). While this is heartening news, many persons who are just coming out of the closet are well into adulthood. Heart valves ensure one way blood flow through heart. The atrioventricular (AV) valves lie between the atria and the ventricles prevents the back flow of blood in to the atria while the ventricles contract. Chordae tendinae anchor AV values to papillary muscles. The left AV valve, the mitral or bicuspid valve consists of two cusps of endocardium. The right atrioventricular valve, the tricuspid valve, has three cusps. The second sets of valve are the semilunar valves. The pulmonary semilunar valves lie between the right ventricle and pulmonary trunk. Aortic semilunar valves lie between ventricle and the aorta. Semilunar valves prevent the backflow of blood into the ventricle. The hearts function as a double pump that serves two circulations. The pulmonary pump in the right side of heart is provided for the gas exchange in the body, and the systemic circulation in the left side provides the functional blood supply to all body tissues. The functional blood to the heart is provided by the coronary arteries. Right coronary artery supplies the heart through the posterior interventricular and marginal artery branches; and the left coronary artery supplies the heart via anterior interventricular artery and the circumflex artery. This community has not always been supported by others. There has been many challenges and attempts to get equality dating back to 1969 with the stonewalls riots, which were violent riots against a police raid by the gaycommunity. This is just one of the many protest and riots that will take place with their fight against discrimination and inequality.
