Many of your established communication patterns may contribute to dysfunctional relationships, misunderstandings and frustration. Making “moralistic judgments” about other people can alienate them. This differs from making “value judgments,” which people do all the time. Comparing people to each other interferes with authentic communication, as does talking about what someone deserves or denying responsibility for your actions. When you say you have to do something, or someone else is making you do it, you alienate yourself from other people.
Nonviolent or Compassionate Communication (NVC) is “a way of communicating that leads us to give from the heart.”
“Nonviolent or Compassionate Communication” (NVC) offers interpersonal connection “from the heart.” NVC helps you focus and stay humane in tough circumstances. Using NVC, you can alter your consciousness so that you see your actions differently.
NVC has four components: “observations, feelings, needs and requests.” To apply NVC, work through these four elements. Observe what’s going on. Share how an event makes you feel and what you need. If you ask the other person to do something, your request should be specific. Ask for something the person can do. Don’t request an attitude change or an abstract intention. NVC has two “parts” or sides. In one, you express yourself and your reality honestly by working through the four components. In the other, you receive communication and respond with empathy as you and your counterpart(s) work through NVC’s four constituent parts. You can apply NVC to personal relationships – within families, in business and in group or societal conflicts.

Lateral violence exists on a spectrum, from seemingly ordinary behaviour such as gossiping or criticism, to intimidation, racism and outright physical intimidation or harm. Lateral violence cannot thrive when employers, co-workers, and team-members become ethically and legally responsible. We do not accept bullying in our schools or other workplaces so why do we accept it or turn a blind eye within our teams? The concern is that lateral violence is happening or fostered at various levels and going on where we have learned to oppress one another and has become normal. Often, lateral violence is a mind-set based on fear rather than respect.
The goal of the presentation is to empower individuals to recognize lateral violence and intervene, through conflict resolution and to avoid unhealthy coping strategies. Having the conversation is what matters . . . it shows that everyone shares the responsibility for behaviour that affects our teams and our communities; we need to show our students healthy communication and role models so they will be able to model behaviours to lead us into the future in a balanced and health way forward.

Externalizing Interviewing
Purpose of “Experience of the Problem” Questions
To separate the problem from the person through externalizing language and develop a rich
understanding of a person’s experience of their relationship with that problem.
Purpose of “Effects of the Problem” Questions
To develop a thorough understanding of the effects the problem has had on the person in different
aspects and different relationships in their life. While we may learn about mixed effects and possibly
beneficial effects, the primary focus is on negative effects of the problem.
Purpose of “Preferences about the Problem” Questions
To invite a person to consider how the problem’s effects fit or don’t fit with their preferred direction
in life. To offer them an opportunity to take a position in relation to the problem, make their
intentions and values known, and mobilize emotional energy behind that position.
Purpose of “Response to the Problem” Questions
To elicit and elaborate a story of the person’s efforts to develop a different relationship with the
problem (which may be to resist it, oppose it, overcome it, cope with it, contain or outgrow it, use it

partner. Scaffold questions: identifying observable behavior, the intentions of such behavior, the
purpose of these intentions, the values inherent in such a purpose(s), and hopes/dreams/outcomes

Step 1:
• Identify people or beings (alive or dead, real or imagined) in the person’s past or present who
would could serve as allies; recognizing, appreciating and standing in support of the person’s
preferred response to problems or pursuit of preferred directions in life.

Step 2:
• Elicit specific times in which the ally witnessed examples of life outside the problematic
story or within the alternative story.
• Elicit a detailed story of those events (e.g. who, what, where, when, and how) and their
