DLW is a production unit under the Indian Ministry of Railways that has been manufacturing diesel-electric locomotives since 1961 through a collaboration with American Locomotive Company. It produces around 250 locomotives annually, with each costing between 12-14 crore rupees. The key facilities at DLW include a chemical metallurgy lab for testing raw materials, a pipe shop for manufacturing fuel and air pipes, a heavy machine shop housing lathes and mills, and a loco and engine test shop for evaluating locomotives under load and lubrication conditions.

2. HISTORY OF DLW:-
• DLW is a production unit under ministry of railways.
• It sets a collaboration with American locomotive
company (ALCO) U.S.A in 1961.
• First locomotive rolled out in 1964.
• DLW is only manufacture of electric-diesel
locomotives with ALCO.
• DLW got its first ISO certification in 1997.
• DLW exports their engines in
SRILANKA,BANGLADESH and many more countries in
Asia.

• It is known as a chemical metallurgy lab.
• Qualitative inspection of raw materials which
is purchased from outside and which should
be manufactured in the workshop.
• Chemical analysis of ferrous and non ferrous
materials.
• Metallurgical analysis of defective
components.

7. 2. PIPE SHOP:-
• Pipes are manufactured in the workshop for
passing a fuels in the engine.
• They are also used in the engine for compressing
the air to apply the breaks.
• Pipes are dipped into the solution i.e.
hydrochloric acid(HCl) by which in the future
having no rust on the pipes.
• It should also coated by the special polymer paint
which should also help to away from the rusting.

• Lathe Machine: The lathe is used for producing cylindrical
work..
• Shaper Machine: Shaper is a machine used for the production
of flat surfaces in vertical, horizontal planes.
• Drilling Machine: A machine designed to hold drill bits which
will produce cylindrical holes.
• Milling Machine :A milling machine uses a rotating tool to
produce flat surfaces. A very flexible, light-duty machine.
• Grinding Machine : Used when a close tolerance and very
smooth finishes are required .

10. HEAVY MACHINE SHOP:-
CNC LATHE MACHINE:-
• It is known as a computerized numerical
controlled machine.
• It should be highly based on the CAD or a CAM
program.
• Its motion should be along the multiple axis
and at least about the two axis i.e. x and y
axis.

13. -:TYPES OF TESTING:-
Lubricating oil testing:-
• Lubrication is done for the better performance
of the engine parts.
• Testing is done by the checking of circulation
of lubricant oil.
• Checking also for the returning path of the
lubricant oil not only for the forward path.
• RR40 is used as a lubricant oil.

14. Water testing:-
• Water act as a coolant for moving part of the
engine because constant rotation or movement
cause various parts to heat up and water working
as a coolant.
Load testing:-
• For load testing electrical load is provided for the
testing. If there is any abnormal sound in the
engine then it should be again tested for the
lubrication and if there is any flaw in it should be
removed.
