Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) in Varanasi manufactures diesel-electric locomotives and spare parts for Indian Railways. It was established in 1961 in collaboration with ALCO, USA. DLW produces several types of locomotives annually with capacities ranging from 3,100 to 5,500 horsepower intended for both passenger and freight service. The locomotives have maximum speeds of 160 km/hr and weights of around 121 tons. DLW has over 50 workshops divided into block, engine, and loco divisions for production activities like assembly, testing, and finishing of locomotive components and final products.

3. INTRODUCTION
- Diesel electric locomotives were introduced on Indian railway
in 1950's.
- Diesel Locomotive Works ( DLW ) was established in 1961 in
collaboration with M/s ALCO, USA in the ancient city of
Varanasi. It is spread in 300 acres area at Varanasi.
- it is a production unit owned by Indian railway, for which it
manufacturers diesel -electric locomotive and its spare parts.
- DLW is an ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:
2007 Certified organization.

5. Diesel electric locomotive
In a diesel - electric locomotive, the diesel engine drives an electrical
generator or alternator whose output provides power to the
traction motors. There is no Mechanical connection between the
engine and the wheels.
