2. Common name:- Coffee
Scientific name:- Coffea canephora
 Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted
coffee beans, the seeds of berries from certain
Coffea species.
 The genus Coffea is native to tropical Africa
(specifically having its origin in Ethiopia and Sudan)
and Madagascar, the Comoros, Mauritius, and Réunion
in the Indian Ocean.
 Coffee plants are now cultivated in over 70 countries,
primarily in the equatorial regions of the Americas,
Southeast Asia, Indian subcontinent, and Africa.
 The two most commonly grown are C. arabica and C.
robusta.

3.  Coffee is darkly coloured, bitter, slightly acidic
and has a stimulating effect in humans, primarily
due to its caffeine content.
 It is one of the most popular drinks in the
world,and it can be prepared and presented in a
variety of ways (e.g., espresso, French press,
café latte).
 It is usually served hot, although iced coffee is a
popular alternative.
 Besides this the coffee plant is also affected by
various diseases which leads to the death of the
plant.
 The diseases which occurs in the plant in
common are as follows:-

4. This disease is also known as “Brown eye spot”.
 Causal organism:- Cercospora coffeicola
 Symptoms:-
 Brown spots on foliage which enlarge and develop grey-white
centre and a red brown margin.
 Lesions may also be surrounded by a yellow halo or may have a
burned appearance if lesions are very numerous.
 Infected leaves drop from plant prematurely.

5.  Lesions on green berries are brown and sunken.
 Infected red berries may have large black
sunken areas.
 Transmission of disease:-
 Disease can be spread by wind,water-splash.
 Through human movement in fields when plants are wet.

6. Management :-
a) Ensure crop is adequately fertilized as
nutrient deficient plants are more
susceptible to the disease.
b) Remove all crops debris form field after
pruning to prevent build up of inoculum.
c) There should be good plant spacing and
pruning to promote good air circulation
around foliage & protects against disease.
d) Use of copper fungicides if available.
e) Spraying of Bordeaux mixture @ 0.5%.

7.  Root rot is a disease that attacks the roots of tree growing in wet or
damp soil.
 This disease can cut the life short
 Causal organism:- Fomes spp. ; Fusarium spp.
 Symptoms:-
Brown root rot-
 Affected bushes show a gradual yellowing of leaves and defoliation
and death.
 Affected roots are brittle and show dark brown wavy lines of the fungus.

8.  Fusarial root or wilt-
 A sudden wilting and yellowing of leaves leading to defoliation
and death of aerial parts.
 Stunted or poor growth,thinning of canopy,
branch die-back.
 Roots turn brown to pinkish.
Causes:-
 Main cause poorly drained or overwatered.
 Weakened roots are more susceptible to soil
fungus.
Management:-
a) Remove the affected plant and Burn the plant and isolate patches
by digging deep trenches.
b) After removing plant,treat the soil at 1kg lime per plant to raise the
pH.
c) Treat affected soil area with brassicol at @0.4%.
d) Maintain the good health of plant.
