DISCOVERING
THE AUTHOR’S
POINT OF VIEW
DOC, DO YOU
KNOW WHAT IS
THE POINT OF
VIEW?
UUM, I DON’T
KNOW SURELY,
MY FRIEND WILL
TELL YOU WHAT
IT IS..
A point of view is the point
through which the author
considers, presents or
communicates his
messages or ideas.
Authors have reasons why they
write a piece.
•Many authors write to inform
or teach someone about
something.
•Sometimes authors write for
others to enjoy his or her piece.
•Often authors' purpose of
writing is to persuade their
audience to do or not do
something.
HOW WE CAN FIND THE AUTHOR’S
POINT OF VIEW IN A TEXT?
To make you clearer
about the author's point of
view, lets read the text
carefully !
The earth is a sphere made up of one-
fourth land and three-fourths water. The
largest bodies of water are the four
oceans: Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean,
Indian Ocean, and Arctic Ocean. The
land is divided into seven continents:
North America, South America, Europe,
Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica.
• The author did not write this piece
to entertain or persuade you. She wrote
this piece to inform the audience.
There is evidence to support this answer.
Everything that is written in this piece is a
FACT
It is a fact that the earth is made up of 1/4
land and 3/4 water with four oceans and
seven continents.
From the text, we can know that the author wrote
the text to inform you about the continents and
oceans of the world.
Remember, authors' writing pieces
have a point of view. If you can
identify whether an author has
written a piece
to entertain, inform or persuade his
or her audience, this will help you
comprehend what you are reading!
Now
let’s
pract
ice
identi
fying
Auth
or's
point
of
view
Identify the author's purpose of
each piece.
Then, support your answer with
evidence from the piece and
choose the author's purpose.
In each piece below, is the author
trying to inform/teach, entertain,
or persuade/convince his or her
audience?
READ THE TEXT CAREFULLY!
• Jim was unable to get to sleep. When
he went to bed he cried. Tomorrow is
his birthday party and it is going to be
ruined. How can we go sledding with
no snow? The next morning, when Jim
got out of bed and ran to the window,
he shouted with glee, "The snow has
fallen and we can go sledding!" Jim
was happy because now he can have
his birthday sledding party.
A. INFORM/TEACH
B. ENTERTAIN
C. PERSUADE/CONVINCE
The author wrote this to:
WHAT IS YOUR
ANSWER?
TO ENTERTAIN THE
AUDIENCE…
AND THE ANSWER IS…
YES..YOU
DID IT..!!!
YIPPIYYY
READ THIS TEXT BELOW !!!
• Everyone should have a pet. Pets are
very loving and affectionate. They help
children learn responsibility. Pets give
you unconditional love. Having a pet is
a wonderful experience.
•
The author’s
wrote this to
________???
to
entertain
to
persuade/
convince
to
inform/teach
persuade/convince
The answer is….
Fantastic..
You are
right.
ARE YOU READY FOR THE NEXT
EXERCISE ??? LET’S CHECK IT OUT…
There are three lights
on a traffic light. The
top light is red and
that means stop. The
middle light is yellow
and that means
caution. The bottom
light is green and that
means go
The answer is to
inform/teach
Yes…you are
absolutely right,
because the author
wrote this to teach
you about three parts
of a traffic light.
The last exercise
Read the text and determine
whether they are True (T) or
False (F).
If you want to become a better
reader you need to read often.
Research supports that children
need to read frequently to be able
to read fluently and to be able read
high frequency words. All
students will benefit by reading at
least 20 - 30 minutes per day.
Make it a point and read more
often!
1. The writer thinks that, to become
a better reader, everyone needs to
read often.
2. The author is sure that reading at
least 20-30 minutes per day is
helpful/beneficial/useful for all
students.
3. The writer feels that research
supports that reading often will not
enable children to read fluently.

  • 3. DOC, DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS THE POINT OF VIEW? UUM, I DON’T KNOW SURELY, MY FRIEND WILL TELL YOU WHAT IT IS..
  • 4. A point of view is the point through which the author considers, presents or communicates his messages or ideas.
  • 5. Authors have reasons why they write a piece. •Many authors write to inform or teach someone about something. •Sometimes authors write for others to enjoy his or her piece. •Often authors' purpose of writing is to persuade their audience to do or not do something.
  • 6. HOW WE CAN FIND THE AUTHOR’S POINT OF VIEW IN A TEXT?
  • 7. To make you clearer about the author's point of view, lets read the text carefully !
  • 8. The earth is a sphere made up of one- fourth land and three-fourths water. The largest bodies of water are the four oceans: Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Arctic Ocean. The land is divided into seven continents: North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica.
  • 9. • The author did not write this piece to entertain or persuade you. She wrote this piece to inform the audience. There is evidence to support this answer. Everything that is written in this piece is a FACT It is a fact that the earth is made up of 1/4 land and 3/4 water with four oceans and seven continents. From the text, we can know that the author wrote the text to inform you about the continents and oceans of the world.
  • 10. Remember, authors' writing pieces have a point of view. If you can identify whether an author has written a piece to entertain, inform or persuade his or her audience, this will help you comprehend what you are reading!
  • 12. Identify the author's purpose of each piece. Then, support your answer with evidence from the piece and choose the author's purpose. In each piece below, is the author trying to inform/teach, entertain, or persuade/convince his or her audience?
  • 13. READ THE TEXT CAREFULLY! • Jim was unable to get to sleep. When he went to bed he cried. Tomorrow is his birthday party and it is going to be ruined. How can we go sledding with no snow? The next morning, when Jim got out of bed and ran to the window, he shouted with glee, "The snow has fallen and we can go sledding!" Jim was happy because now he can have his birthday sledding party.
  • 14. A. INFORM/TEACH B. ENTERTAIN C. PERSUADE/CONVINCE The author wrote this to:
