•Inferring the speaker’s tone, mood and
purpose is giving idea on what maybe the
feeling/intention of the speaker in a scenario.
•By doing so, it could help us to find meaning
and help us feel more connected to the
speaker.
 Tone is the speaker’s attitude towards the audience,
the subject or the character. You can recognize the
tone by the word choices the speaker’s uttered.
“We had a great time at the party. The clowns
were hilarious and talented.”
TONE
Mood is the feeling the readers get from the
writing.
“There was plenty of food and music was playing.
Everybody was having fun.
MOOD
Is the intention or reason of the author in
writing a text.
2. PURPOSE
“Fish breathe under water using gills, not lungs.
They live in water. They have scales and fins.
Fish are cold-blooded animals and lay many
eggs.”
Three Common Purposes
1. To inform
“I have three dogs. Dogs are the best pets. They
are very loving and helpful. It’s fun to teach them
new tricks. You should also get a dog now.”
