This document discusses the development of the chondrocranium in Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish). It uses the little skate, Leucoraja erinacea, as a model organism to visualize and describe the developmental sequence. The chondrocranium develops from anterior to posterior, beginning with the parachordal cartilage forming the basal plate surrounding the notochord. Later, the occipital region forms the posterior end surrounding the descending notochord. The little skate is a good model as its development is independent within its egg case, allowing for experimental embryological studies.
