The document is a script that tells the story of Zoey, a NASA scientist who is put into an 18-month hibernation experiment in Svalbard, Norway. She awakens to find that a catastrophic event has killed everyone else and changed the environment. With the help of a drone named BEEPBOOP, she survives by scavenging a nearby town and using the Svalbard Seed Vault to grow crops. However, climate change causes the permafrost and vault to melt, threatening her only means of long-term survival. In the end, BEEPBOOP leaves Zoey alone in the vault with only a promise to return if it cannot find any other survivors.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A SHORT FILM SCRIPT
Toby Riding
SCENE 1: INT. MEDICAL FACILITY, SVALBARD - MORNING, JANUARY
2028
2. 2
Our unnamed female character (ZOEY for ease) is about to
be put into hibernation. Svalbard is Norweigan
Archipelago in the Arctic Circle. The Svalbard Seed Vault
is a global seed bank, where countries can store seeds
for preservation.
ZOEY is a NASA scientist, on an 18 month long mission to
test the feasibility of human hibernation. The work is
highly controversial; due to this and the unstable nature
of the experiment, it is being held in the Svalbard Seed
Vault, one of the most geologically safe locations in the
world.
DAVE
You lucky fuck, getting 18
months of sleep when the boss is
working us to death.
ZOEY
And who is it that’s getting the
danger pay again?
JANE
Dave stop bitching and come and
help me ready the gas. At least
you get a break from Dave’s
moaning for a year and a half. I
think that’s worth the danger in
itself.
MASON ENTERS (REMAINS OFFSCREEN)
MASON
Is she ready? I’ve got the
director listening in.
JANE
Yes sir.
MASON
Are you Zoey? I’m obligated to
remind you that you are not
required to continue, but it
would be a pain in the ass to
find anyone else.
ZOEY
Ready sir.
MASON
Alright then. Err, good luck.
Dave?
DAVE
Yep sir. Take care Zoey.
3. 3
JANE
I mean we are the ones taking
care of her, but still, don’t
have too many parties.
DIRECTOR (OVER CRACKLY
INTERCOM)
Good luck.
THE LID CLOSES OVER THE HIBERNATION POD
ALL
MUFFLED TALKING
FADE TO: TITLES
SCENE 2: EXT. ARCTIC DESERT - MORNING
ZOEY is walking across a desert landscape.
ZOEY (V.O)
It was 7 months into the 18
month experiment testing
hibernation (Induced Torpor
Technology for the pedants)when
the earth stopped rotating.
ZOEY (CONT.)
In hibernation I was blissfully
unaware as the people around me
were catapulted at 375 miles an
hour towards the east facing
wall of the room.
4.
ZOEY (CONT.)
I woke to darkness. An oddly
still silence. As the pod opened
liquid started dripping over the
lid onto me. I got up, I stood
in the mulched remains of my
friends.
SCENE 3: EXT. SVALBARD SEED VAULT - EVENING
ZOEY stumbles out of the vault door, hunched over against
the gale force winds.
ZOEY (V.O)
I stumbled out of the door into
the cold, my footsteps staining
the snow with blood.
BEEPBOOP
Maam, Maam? Are you ok?
4. 4
I would suggest that you get to
safety, there may be repeat
events.
A GENERAL USE DRONE HOVERS INTO SHOT,
CHASING ZOEY.
ZOEY COLLAPSES, PANTING.
BEEPBOOP
Maam, you need to get inside
now. In about 30 seconds your
feet are going to freeze to the
ice, and in about 15 minutes you
are going to become too cold to
move and die.
NO RESPONSE
BEEPBOOP
Maam, follow my instructions.
Stand up.
ZOEY STANDS UP
BEEPBOOP
Now put one foot in front of the
other and move towards the door.
ZOEY WALKS TOWARDS THE DOOR AND ENTERS THE VAULT
BEEPBOOP
Now shut the door.
ZOEY SHUTS THE DOOR
CUT TO:
SCENE 4: EXT. ARCTIC DESERT - MORNING
ZOEY is walking hunched over across a desert landscape.
BEEPBOOP is straining alongside her.
ZOEY
You saved my life that day
BEEPBOOP
An existence with no ma'am would
have been incredibly
unfulfilling.
ZOEY
You flatter me.
ZOEY (V.O)
A few days later, after
recovering we made the trip out
5. 5
to the nearest town,
Longyearbyen. The town was
normally supplied from regular
shipments coming into the port
in the summer, but there was no-
one to bring them in; everyone
was dead.
BEEPBOOP (V.O)
Longyearbyen sits in a valley
which splits off from the main
Longyearbyen glacier further
uphill and merges at the bottom
with the river created from the
melt.
ZOEY (V.O)
I wasn’t really sure what I was
expecting to find in the
settlement, but I was hoping it
was more than nothing.
CUT TO:
SCENE 5: EXT. TOP OF LONGYEARBYEN VALLEY - AFTERNOON
The `camera` is looking down on ZOEY and
BEEPBOOP as they look down on the remains
of Longyearbyen.
ZOEY (V.O)
The stream of melt which once
trickled gently down the bottom
of the valley had washed away
the whole north side of the
town.
BEEPBOOP (V.O)
In an hour I had located about
100 days worth of food, and
ma’am had moved it into a safe
hole in the side of the valley.
She took what she could back in
a backpack I found.
SCENE 6: EXT. ARCTIC DESERT - Late Afternoon
ZOEY is walking (less) hunched over across a desert
landscape. BEEPBOOP is flying alongside her.
ZOEY (V.O)
That food was only going to last
100 days. Just as it happens, my
glorious hotel for the last 7
months happened to be the
largest seed vault in the world,
holding seeds in case of famine
6. 6
or extinction. The weather was
still too violent outside so I
went full Mark Watney dragging
soil inside to one of the empty
vaults. Unfortunately the server
containing the catalog of seeds
was currently embedded in wall,
so I just guessed. I mean, how
unlucky could I get picking from
30,574 different types of bean.
CUT TO:
SCENE 7: INT. SVALBARD SEED VAULT - MORNING
ZOEY is in vault 2, looking down the long line of crates.
Each packet is being lifted into frame, and then being
carried off by BEEPBOOP to the left.
ZOEY (LOUDLY TO HERSELF)
Peas from the UK, let’s try it!
Barley from the US, ok!
Asian rice from Laos, chuck it
down!
Oh wow erm, stuff it - Corn from
North Korea!
CUT TO:
SCENE 8: EXT. TOP OF LONGYEARBYEN VALLEY - AFTERNOON
Throughout this scene cuts through time are being made,
showing the river expand.
ZOEY (V.O)
Every few days I returned to
Lonyearbyen, restocking my food
before the crops grew.
Day to day the wind was
slowing, and the temperatures
increasing.
BEEPBOOP (V.O)
Each day I recorded the
temperature, and the increase
was accelerating. The glacial
melt, having completely covered
the north side of the valley,
started to spread across to the
south side.
CUT TO:
SCENE 7: EXT. SVALBARD SEED VAULT - EVENING
7. 7
ZOEY is recanting to BEEPBOOP. This is a scene where she
is actually talking.
ZOEY
That was Wednesday. The 19th of
July 2028. Over the next week
the permafrost in the top levels
of the vault started to melt.
Temperatures inside the vault
were now rising. By Thursday the
melting of the permafrost was
flooding the crops, and by
Friday the humidity was reaching
that of a jungle. I spent a
sleepless few days bringing the
hardiest of the crops that
survived down to the deepest
levels of the vault, and
replanting them.
BEEPBOOP
Hurry up, you need to get inside
and I need to leave.
ZOEY
I’m almost done.
On Friday I went for a final
expedition out to Longyearbyen.
CUT TO:
SCENE 8: EXT. TOP OF LONGYEARBYEN VALLEY - AFTERNOON
(FLASHBACK)
There are no remains of civilisation. Just a river.
ZOEY
There was barely a trace of
civilisation. Pretty much the
only things left were roads,
coming down into the valley on
either side, winding down the
side and then gently running
into the new sea. Climate change
had arrived, whether humanity
wanted to have a say or not.
CUT TO:
SCENE 9: EXT. SVALBARD SEED VAULT - EVENING (PRESENT)
ZOEY is recanting to BEEPBOOP. This is a scene where she
is actually talking.
BEEPBOOP
And then that evening I told
you.
CUT TO:

SCENE 10: EXT. SVALBARD SEED VAULT - EVENING THE PREVIOUS
DAY (FLASHBACK)
No characters visible. ZOEY’s sobbing and screaming `No`
is audible through the door. That is followed by
clattering and bashing. Then silence.
CUT TO:
SCENE 11: EXT. SVALBARD SEED VAULT - EVENING (PRESENT)
Cut back.
BEEPBOOP
You tried to reset me.
ZOEY (Deflecting)
It’s going to be quiet without
you.
BEEPBOOP
You’re fine. There are people in
far greater need than you.
ZOEY LOOKS TOWARDS CAMERA
ZOEY (BREAKING 4TH WALL)
All of this is a roundabout way
of saying; please come and find
me. I’m going to be lonely, and
I’m not how long I can last.
BEEPBOOP
If I don’t find anyone, I’ll be
back in October, when the long
night starts. You’ll be able to
come out then.
ZOEY
So I guess this is it.
ZOEY STARTS WALKING TO THE VAULT DOOR
BEEPBOOP
Goodbye ma'am.
THE VAULT DOOR SLAMS SHUT. BEEPBOOP TURNS AROUND AND
FLIES OFF DOWN THE HILL TOWARDS THE OCEAN
CUT TO:
SCENE 12: EXT. FOREST - EVENING
BEEPBOOP is flying across a collapsed forest when he sees
smoke. When he gets overhead, he sees the shell of a
plane, and a badly constructed shelter.
